IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. ALTHOUGH most accidents occur through the A carelessness or misfortune of the workmen; that is no reason why we should not take all physical precautions practicable. The best way to approach the problem of mine safety is to acquire a personal feeling of responsibility for the accident and then plan how it might have been prevented had we known that it was to occur. A statistical analysis of the physical conditions contributory to accidents will give an indication of some of the methods or mechanisms that should be revised or safeguarded. The handling of rock or ore is a common source of minor injuries. Freedom from accident when mucking largely depends on the skill and care of the workman; this also is true, to a certain degree, to loading cars from chutes, but much can be done in the layout of chutes and their equipment to provide equal safety with less skill. Permanent stagings, or rigid units that may be easily assembled, should be provided so that the men handling the chute boards or gates and barring the jammed chunks will have a convenient safe footing for their operations. A stance to the side of the chute mouth is to one in front, because a man will not be liable to be struck by flying lumps or his bar, should it he caught in the mass, yet in many mines the workmen face the chute when loading a car. Fig. 1 shows the operation of a plank chute having special latches which support the chute boards in such manner that they may be conveniently dropped into place to stop the flow of ore.

CUBA differs considerably from the other Greater Antilles in many geologic fundamentals. Cuba is geosynclinals; whereas Jamaica, Hispaniola. (Haiti), and Puerto Rico are geoanticlinal. (Scliuchert, Chas., Historical Geology of the Antillian. Caribbean Region, p. 13, 1935.) Rocks of lowermost Cretaceous age exist in large volume in Cuba, where- as they are generally absent in the other islands. Since many of the surface indications of petroleum are intimately associated with lowermost Cretaceous rocks, the Vinales limestone,, this difference is most important. IN accordance with the custom of recent years, the Institute joined with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress in holding a joint meeting at Joplin on Sept. 28, 29 and 30. Actually the meeting might be said to have begun on the 27th, since the Engineering Education Committee held two sessions on that day, which are reported on another page. In addition to these sessions there were informal gatherings in the Hotel Conner, which was the headquarters, on the golf links and elsewhere of all those who had arrived by Sunday morning. The technical sessions were formally opened on Monday morning by Robert E. Tally who, after suitable preliminary remarks, introduced A. Scott Thompson, of Miami, Okla. Mr. Thompson in welcoming the visitors to the Tri-State district said that it had come to be known as a poor man's country and at the present price of zinc did not find it difficult to live up to its name. He also referred to the work Mr. Tally had done for the stabilization of the mineral industry. H. Foster Bain, in responding to this address for the Institute, said that mining men generally felt at home in Joplin, that the solutions of their problems and the general practice that had been developed in the district were not only of great interest to them, but that visitors could learn much

WHAT is an engineering opportunity? To the mining .engineer the natural assumption is that the first requisite 'is a mineral deposit, but, of course, it is not so simple as that. There are at various points on the earth really very great mineral deposits which, on account of geographic location, backwardness of the country, or hostility of its natives, are now, and for a long time to come will be, quite valueless. The mining engineer, and for that matter the civil engineer, is more dependent upon the decisions of capital than upon any other factor in his profession. Ordinarily it is to be assumed that money will go to any place where it is clear that an adequate return upon its investment can be secured, but for many years it has not been safe to depend upon this. ' As already stated, there are many places where local conditions are such that mining is not safe to engage in and there are still other places in which conditions have been so aggravated by the Great War and by the social unrest which has upset the Asiatic region that capital is naturally most reluctant to venture, even when engineering data makes the undertaking appear attractive. It will be evident, I. believe, that there are many factors vital to the success of a mining enterprise in some of the remote countries which we do not have to consider in the United States and which do not, in fact, exist here.

THE- impression which the public has of northern Canada is that it is a' vast wilderness of forests; river's, and. lakes, sparsely inhabited by. a few Indians and `containing a few, scattered trading posts of the Hudson Bay Co. This is far from the facts. The building of the Canadian Pacific Railway led to the discovery, in 1883, of the nickel deposits of Sudbury, Ont.; these are the largest known nickel deposits in the world and produce about 90 per cent. of the world's output of nickel. The building of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway north, from North Bay, to open up farming lands along Lake. Temiskaming, resulted in the discovery and development of the great silver deposits of the Cobalt area, Ontario. Since the discovery of these deposits in 1903 to Dec. 31, .1923, Cobalt has produced a total of ' 327,301,897 oz. of silver, valued at $212,668,434, and paid in. dividends $88,338,185. In 1923 the production of Cobalt amounted to 10,285,247 oz. of silver. Just south of Cobalt, in South Lorrain,. a. new silver district has recently been developed and mills have started production. These deposits are of such extent that 'a branch railroad is under construction from Cobalt to that area. Northwest of Cobalt is the Gowganda silver area which is also a producer of silver ore and is now attracting outside attention. This area is not connected by railroad.

To provide thermodynamic data for converting the nickel matte to liquid nickel, an experimental study was conducted in the phase equilibrium between the Ni-S alloy and the CaO-Al2O3 based slag melted in a MgO crucible at 1873 K under controlled Pso2 of 10.1 kPa and Po2 in a range between 2.5x 10-and 10.1 Pa by using CO-CO2-SO2 gas mixtures. The content of nickel in the slag at Po, of 10.1 Pa, above which solid NiO is expected to precipitate in the equilibrium state, was found to be 4, I mass% and the contents of sulfur and oxygen in the nickel melt were 0.4 and 02 mass%, respectively. ft was clarified that increase in the temperature reduces the solubility of nickel in the slag and the contents of sulfur and oxygen in the alloy, The distribution of minor elements such as gold, silver, copper, cobalt, iron, arsenic and antimony between the Ni-S alloy and the CaO-Al2O3 based slag was also studied. The distribution ratios of iron and cobalt, defined by (%X in slag)/[%X in alloy] where X is the minor element, are larger values than that of nickel, while those of copper, silver and antimony are similar to that of nickel. The distribution ratios of arsenic and gold are lower than that of nickel in the higher range of oxygen partial pressure.

The Worsey-Silva equation determines the optimal row timing for the smallest fragmentation and allows fragmentation models to be adjusted due to row timing. The equation utilizes the concept of dynamic confinement to determine when the best time to fire the next row or sequence series would be if the smallest fragmentation is desired. Full-scale testing was conducted at an aggregate quarry in Ontario to support the theory and equation. The full-scale testing comprised six (6) blasts, two (2) different contractors, and three (3) different sequences. The test parameters were kept consistent, besides changing the timing between sequential charges to explore the timing sequence’s influences on fragmentation. From this research, the theory of dynamic confinement relating to row timing was discovered, and the equation to determine the optimal timing for the smallest fragmentation was derived. An equation to adjust fragmentation based on row timing was derived from the full-scale testing and literature review. The Worsey-Silva equation can be used with other fragmentation models as it takes the fragmentation results from the other models and adjusts them based on the row timing used. The electrochemical dissolution of super alloys containing different amounts of rhenium was investigated. The initial part of the investigation focused on the anodic dissolution of rhenium from second-generation (3% Re) and third-generation (6% Re) nickel based alloys. Exploratory electrochemical tests were conducted to evaluate solution chemistries and to establish fundamental dissolution behavior of the alloys. These included rotating disc electrode (RDE) cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometry tests. Electrolytes comprising sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and ammonium sulfate were examined. Of these, a 0.1 M HCl solution proved to be extremely effective for electrochemical dissolution of samples of CMSX-4, CMSX-10, and SC-180 alloys. This paper discusses in detail the electrochemical behavior of these alloys.

Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a resistência ao desgaste de dois diferentes materiais (três amostras de aço SAE 52100 e três amostras de SAE 1045) em diferentes condições microestruturais, sem lubrificação e com lubrificação (utilizando biodiesel B100, óleo diesel/biodiesel B50 e óleo diesel comercial B7). Quatro amostras foram submetidas a tratamento térmico de têmpera (830°C resfriado em óleo nas amostras de aço SAE 52100 e 850°C resfriado em água nas amostras de SAE 1045) seguida de revenimento (100°C e 200°C nas amostras de aço SAE 52100 e 100°C e 300°C nas amostras de SAE 1045). Os ensaios foram realizados em um tribômetro do tipo pinosobre- disco, com rotação de 300 RPM, 1,5kg de carga e 4400m de distância percorrida, seguindo as recomendações da norma ASTM G99–95, medição da microdureza superficial da pista de desgaste e avaliação da superfície desgastada das amostras com um Microscópio Eletrônico de Varredura (MEV). Ao final dos ensaios, observou-se a variação da resistência ao desgaste entre os diferentes materiais, diferentes microestruturas e diferentes lubrificantes aplicados no ensaio. Os resultados indicaram uma tendência de diminuição de desgaste nos ensaios realizados com lubrificação de biodiesel B100.

Previous studies on blast fumes(CO + NO2) clearance and workplace re-entry time have overlooked the effects of toxic gases entrapped in the muckpile. The currently available models forcalculatingthe mine re-entry times assume that all post-blast fumes are emitted upon detonation. However,recentstudies reportedthat as much as 60% to 70% of the fumes or gases produced during an underground development blasting couldremain entrapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muckpile. Entrapped fumes are slowly released,and when disturbed, high concentrations are released, representing a possible risk during the digging and transportation of the muckpile. This study uses CFD, SC-Flow software to understandthe behaviorof the entrapped fumes and theireffect on mine re-entry time.

Une analyse par diffraction aux rayons-X permet une comp araison relative des résultats de placage et de précipitation d'oxyde cuivreux dans Ie bain. Le traitement de placage a pour but d'assurer une adhésion suffisante de la fibre dans une matrice métallique Iors de la fabrication éventuelle de materiaux composites.IntroductionCette communication se veut un compte-rendu de nos travaux sur Ie placage au cuivre de la fibre d'amiante chrysotile, en vue de I'incorporer éventuellernent dans une matrice métallique. La fibre d'amiante est constituée de fib rilles élementaires d'un diamètre d'environ 0.02 um qui ont une résistance en tension de I'ordre de celie de la fibre de verre ou de carbone(1). Pour être efficace, la fibre de renf'ort d'un matériau composite doit d'une part, avo ir des propriétés mécaniques intrinsèques élevées, et d'autre part, adhérer solidement â la matrice pour que Ie transfert de charge s'effectue sans qu'il y ait décohésion entre les composantes du matériau.La fibre d'amiante étant naturellement soyeuse, il faut la traiter superficiellement pour que l'adhésion avec la matrice soit suffisante. Ainsi, on recouvre la fibre de phénol-formaldéhyde(2) ou de silane(3) lorsqu'elle est employée avec une matrice polymere. Dans Ie cas d'une matrice métallique, ces dépôts organiques ne peuvent resister aux températures de mise en oeuvre, d'où l'intérêt de plaquer les fibres par un dépôt métallique.Dans cette étude, nous rapportons les résultats relatifs à la methode utilisée pour plaquer au cuivre la fibre d'amiante chrysotile. Une analyse par diffraction aux rayons-X permet de comparer les différentes conditions de placage non-électrolytique."

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

Variations in specific gravity of oil retorted from oil shales of the Eocene Green River Formation in northwestern Colorado were evaluated statistically, demonstrating that these variations are very strongly associated with stratigraphic position and less strongly but still significantly associated with geographic location. Specific gravity of oil retorted from these oil shales apparently varies with the carboxyl group content of the oil shale's organic matter. Higher temperatures accompanying increasing depth of burial probably progressively decarboxylated oil shale's organic matter producing the decrease of oil specific gravity associated with deeper stratigraphic position. The geographically associated oil-gravity variations were probably produced by regional variation in the original thickness of late Cenozoic extrusive rocks once overlying the Green River Formation.

Em uma linha de decapagem contínua, o tempo de parada da entrada para realização da solda é um dos fatores que mais afeta a produtividade. Estratificando-se o tempo total dessa parada, parte significativa é composta pelo tempo de centelhamento, que é um dos parâmetros fundamentais da soldagem a topo por centelhamento. Adicionalmente, a energia elétrica e o gás natural, consumidos durante o processo de soldagem, contribuem para onerar o custo de transformação da BQD. A fim de reduzir esse tempo e os custos de transformação, avaliou-se, através de análise metalográfica, ensaios de embutimento e dureza, a qualidade de juntas soldas com tempos reduzidos e sem o uso do sistema de depleção de oxigênio, para aços de baixo carbono, de acordo com referências da literatura. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi possível reduzir o tempo médio de solda em 5s em materiais com espessuras superiores a 2,50mm e eliminar a necessidade do uso de gás natural em todos os aços da GRADE 0, o que representa em torno de 76% das bobinas produzidas nas LDCs.

Devido crescente necessidade de elevação dos níveis de conformação em peças estampadas, existe uma demanda cada vez maior em ligas e processos diversificados que atendam as variadas exigências do setor de produtos estampados e posteriormente tratados termicamente para aumento de dureza. Desse modo desenvolveu-se a liga C80M (modificada), que é uma variante da liga C80U especificada na norma DIN EN ISO 4957 porém com adição de Cromo, entretanto a liga C80M ainda é pouco estudada e pouca informação técnica se tem a seu respeito. Com a finalidade de melhor conhecimento técnico dessa liga, foram conduzidos estudos de caracterização em amostras laminadas a quente e após processo de esferoidização posteriormente sendo revestidas com fosfato de zinco. Foram realizados estudos de composição química, microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas, além de levantamento da curva CLC através do método Nakazima em amostras com e sem revestimento de fosfato. Através dos resultados parciais encontrados, foi possível definir o lado da curva CLC relacionado ao estiramento da chapa bem como comparar o deslocamento e a força do punção no teste Nakazima conformando-se amostras esferoidizadas sem e com revestimento de fosfato.

Traditionally, secant piles have been utilized to provide temporary support during excavation for shafts and cut-and-cover tunnels. As an alternative, the secant piles can be included into the permanent structure, where they serve as the envelope sustaining the lateral loads and gravity of the permanent structure in addition to supporting the excavation during construction. This has several benets, such as shorter building times and lower excavation costs. Recent construction of an approach structure and an underground station as part of Montréal, Canada’s Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), one of the biggest transit systems in North America, was completed with remarkable success using this. In this paper, a case study based on a project that employed secant piles as the permanent liner is presented. Techniques to guarantee a watertight construction with over a century of service life are described, along with a variety of structural and waterproong methods applied to create an economical design.

A prática de inertização de um distribuidor de 17,7 t para lingotamento contínuo de aços foi estudada numericamente através de um modelo matemático tridimensional não-isotérmico. O modelo considera uma única fase gasosa composta de dois componentes: argônio e ar. A turbulência foi levada em conta por meio do modelo k-e padrão. Os cálculos foram executados utilizando o software de CFD comercial ANSYS CFX. Diferentes configurações do sistema de inertização foram simuladas. Os resultados indicaram que a configuração atual é ineficiente e novas configurações foram sugeridas. Algumas recomendações para a correta prática de inertização também são fornecidas.

Este trabalho oferece uma revisão geral sobre as características básicas de uniões aluminotérmicas de forma a subsidiar a avaliação e melhoria no desempenho de soldagem aluminotérmicas de trilhos, realizada em um outro trabalho também sendo apresentado.
