The maintenance of the common gold standard is the most important cooperative undertaking in the world. The war broke up this relationship and brought about a state of great disorder in the currencies and exchanges. After the war the countries all began to grope their way back to the gold standard as the best means of establishing trade and financial relations with each other. With this movement began a general decline in commodity prices. The question has been raised whether the world's return to the gold standard was not forcing prices back to the prewar level. Also, the question is raised whether the world has not outgrown the supply of gold as the basis of credit. Because Europe readjusted its monetary units to conform to the higher level of prices there is no pressure on prices on this account. Furthermore, a large amount of gold formerly in hand-to-hand circulation passed out of circulation and has been added to the central bank reserves. The gold reserves of 36 countries increased approximately 100 per cent from the outbreak of the war to June 30,1930. The increase is much larger than the average increase of prices in any of the important countries, at any time since 192.5. As gold in the central banks of issue is far more effective for all business purposes than gold in circulation, the gold scarcity argument has little basis as applied to this time. The abnormal distribution due to the war was to the disadvantage of business everywhere. Credit was scarcer and dearer in some countries. The inflation in this country might have been greater had the production of gold been greater. The argument supporting the theory of a scarcity of gold assumes as fundamental that general price changes must be accounted for by changes in the price equation on the side of money. This is disproved in every period of business depression. A downward price movement is characteristic of every period of business recession. Important discoveries of gold must be made even to maintain present gold production, in the face of which the world's business is bound to continue increasing. "In this study, the interaction between magnetite and the additive olivine was studied after oxidation as well as after isothermal reduction at temperatures in the 500º-1,300º C range. In the olivine sample, the forsteritic olivine particles react partly during the oxidation pretreatment to form magnesioferrite and vitreous silica along the particle corona. This breakdown of the olivine particles during oxidation liberates magnesium from the particles, which do not react until temperatures of above 1,150° C in reducing atmosphere. When the hematite in the sample is reduced, and when the temperature is high enough to allow solid-state diffusion at ~800º C, the magnesium of the magnesioferrite redistributes, so that the magnesium concentration approaches the same level throughout the iron oxide structure. For magnetite, this did not occur until 800° C. At 1,000° C, this magnesium reacts further with the silica in the glassy slag phase, which crystallizes into fayalitic olivine. At this temperature, the magnesium has diffused over distances of more than 600 µm from large olivine particles after 2 hrs reduction. From this point, the primary slag phase in the pellet, until melting, is solid fayalite. Upon reduction to metal, the metallization front concentrates the MgO in the remaining wustite, which can lead to MgO levels of up to 10 mole% locally. The melting point of the fayalite is raised from 1,145º C to a melting range of 1,238-1,264º C due to the MgO increase, as estimated based on phase diagrams, which were adapted to the pellets tested. Much of the olivine that remained unaltered in the oxidation process will be encapsulated by iron before the particles begin to dissolve in reducing conditions and, therefore, plays no role in the reduction before final melting of the particles occurs.IntroductionEnvironmental concerns have placed increasing pressure on the CO2-intensive iron and steel industries to further optimize operation toward higher productivity and more efficient use of reducing agents. At the same time, high demand for iron ore has caused new iron ores with lower grades and more complex chemistries to be taken into production. In Scandinavia, the main iron-bearing material is magnetite-based pellets with olivine, which allow operation with very low slag volumes and, hence, lower fuel rate ( Slagnes and Sundqvist Ökvist, 2008; Hallin et al., 1994). Both the MgO and SiO2 of the olivine, as well as the elements of the gangue of the ore, i.e., Si, Mg, Ca, Al and alkali, interact with the iron oxides to give the finished pellet product its final properties in the blast furnace. Tailoring the additive mix to be used for a certain iron ore for optimal product properties, therefore, requires detailed knowledge of the mechanisms by which these elements dissolve and react in the pellet."

The deposit genesis, the ore property, and the mineral characteristics, which has a close relationship with the beneficiablity, could be regarded as the “Genetic Properties”, actually are the determining factors for beneficiation process development. However, in conventional concentrator’s process development and engineering, there have been lack of systematic research and test on those genetic properties, also lack of well-established collecting, statistics and analysis system for those huge amount of data such as the historical mineral processing technique research, process mineralogy study, practical operating and engineering data. Obviously it is far less than enough for profound integration combining modern IT together with traditional mineral processing technology, as a result there are a number of disadvantages in mineral processing R&D and engineering, such as long term, high cost, low efficiency as well as repetitive testwork not making full advantage of previous experiences. Aiming to make utmost of those Genetic Properties and overcome above disadvantages in mineral processing R&D and engineering, the concept of “Genetic Mineral Processing Engineering (GMPE)” is put forwarded, and the strategical study has been conducted on this regard, with the main focus on following aspects: a) Testing and extraction of the “Genetic Properties”; b) Establishment of data base and data warehouse of GMPE; c) Intelligent decision making system for beneficiation process; d) Verification testwork; e) Virtual concentrator. The technical route proposed is to firstly conduct research and test on those Genetic Properties mentioned above, based on that the specific data base will be set up and applied for intelligent process recommendation and simulation with a few verification testwork conducted in the meantime, finally achieve a fast, high efficiency and precise determination of technology and process for ore beneficiation. The systematic study on the three-in-one GMPE would make an innovative breakthrough in conventional mineral process testwork research and engineering methodology, and provide technical support for the concentrator’s design and upgrading.

Influence of frothers (a-terpineol and n-octanol) concentration on kinetics of a three phase contact (TPC) formation by a bubble colliding with a hydrophobic surface (Teflon) of different roughness was studied using a high-speed camera (1040 frames per second). It was found that the Teflon surface roughness and the frother concentration strongly affected time of the TPC formation (tTPC) and time of drainage (tD) of the liquid film separating the colliding bubble from the solid surfaces. With increasing Teflon surface roughness, from ca 1 to 80 µm, the time of the TPC formation was shortened by over the order of magnitude, from ca 100 to a few milliseconds only. At low a-terpineol and n-octanol concentrations, thetTPC values were shorter than in distilled water due to lowering the bubble velocity in the frother presence and diminished bouncing of the colliding bubble. However, at high frothers concentrations the tTPC values were prolonged, despite that the bubble velocity was similar. The prolongation of the tTPC at high frother concentrations indicates that air (micro- and/or nano-bubbles) was present at the Teflon surfaces of different roughness. The mechanism of the tTPCprolongation at high frother dosage is described.

INTRODUCTION Social awareness of the detrimental impact of man-made wastes on our environment has grown considerably during the last two decades. Increased public and institutional concerns have resulted in the implementation of a wide variety of regulatory controls of disposal of wastes. These regulations have often reflected significant conservatism in expecting guaranteed elimination of pollution risks. This sort of expectation assumed a state of knowledge which was not readily available to the major producers of wastes. The mining industry, in particular, has been affected by such regulations in terms of excessive costs and loss of benefit. As a result, investigations are in progress (1) to generate newer methods for satisfactory stabilization of mine and mill wastes and (2) to apply the available technology to achieve the standards set by the regulatory agencies at reasonable costs. This paper presents a conceptual scheme for stabilization of mill wastes by suitable management of operations and accelerated consolidation of tailings slurries. The main discussion in this paper is aimed at the ability of the proposed scheme to address the major considerations in effective disposal. Comparison in both cost and effectiveness are also made between the proposed scheme and various other currently used disposal concepts. MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS IN EFFECTIVE DISPOSAL The primary objective of an effective tailings disposal scheme is to provide containment of the contaminants in such a manner that the undesirable impact of the wastes on the three basic elements of our environment--land, air, and water-would be minimal. Bearing the above objective in mind, one may justifiably list the major considerations in the choice of the disposal scheme in terms of its effects on land, air, and water (Bromwell, 1976) as follows: Effects on Land (1) whether the scheme makes optimal use of land.

Ventilation and refrigeration fortune climate modification contributes significantly to the operating costs of a deep hot mine. Mine climate simulation programs can he used to minimize the impact of these costs. There are several computer codes available to assist in this work. Whichever simulation program is used, it is the mine ventilation engineer who must supply the input data. This paper raises and answers the following question, namely, what accuracy is required of the basic input parameters, in order for a certain precision to he obtained in the predicted air temperatures? In the first part of the paper a new approach is described to estimate the dry and wet bulb temperature of the airflow, either in a dry or wet roadway. The calculation procedure allows an arbitrary temperature change with time, using Duhamel's superposition solution. Matrix-vector representation is applied to simplify the computational structure. In the second part of the paper the sensitivities of the dry and wet bulb air temperatures are analyzed, to the changes of the rock thernrophysical properties, the heat transfer coefficient, and the wetness factor.

Purpose: Marras et al. developed a technique to evaluate sincerity of effort during dynamic trunk motion performance. The validity and reliability of the technique have not been evaluated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to first determine whether or not a sincerity of effort measure correctly identified those giving a sincere effort in a blinded randomized control trial and second to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Methods: This article reports the findings of a two phase study. In phase one, the blinded evaluation, participants were randomly assigned to either a sincere or insincere performance condition. An examiner tested participants without knowledge of the participant's group membership. In the second phase, two examiners evaluated each participant twice to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Results: In the blinded phase the specificity was 100% and sensitivity was 90% for identifying sincere and insincere effort, respectively. Phase two results showed no significant difference in probability of sincere effort between raters or between testing sessions. Conclusion: A performance criterion that accurately identifies sincere vs insincere group membership during functional evaluations was identified. There were no significant differences between raters or between testing sessions. These findings indicate that this test is reliable and possesses good predictive validity in assessing sincerity of effort.

THE scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the minerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; and further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by F. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geo-chemistry;1 and in the preparation of this paper I have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moissan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P.. In low carbon TRIP steels, the formation of carbide-free bainitic ferrite is crucial for the stabilization of austenite. Based on experimental investigations modeling the bainite reaction is examined adopting diffusional and displacive mechanisms, as well as the semi-empirical JMAK approach. Transformation tests were carried out to study the isothermal austenite decomposition into bainitic ferrite for a model steel containing 0.6wt%C, 1.5wt%Mm and 1.5wt%Si which replicates the composition of remaining austenite at the start of the bainite reaction in a classical C-Mn-Si TRIP steel. In the diffusional approach, classical nucleation theory is employed and subsequent growth of bainite plates is modeled using the Zener-Hillert theory. In the displacive approach, the autocatalytic nucleation of bairtite plates is assumed to be rate controlling. The predictive capability of all models is evaluated for temperature ranges where different morphologies of bainitic ferrite have been detected, The shortcomings and inherent challenges associated with either of these modeling approaches will be delineated.

The successful operation of diesel equipment underground does not entirely depend on selection of robust, reliable, easily maintained machines. Results are also heavily influenced by the following factors: Design and condition of the operating area. Skill of operators. Correct maintenance facilities. Experience, skill and initiative of maintenance personnel. If the mine layout does not allow access to a central workshop area, the effect of any shortcomings will be magnified. The best results will only be obtained by close co-operation between mining and maintenance departments right from the initial planning stages.

DURING the past few years the amazing developments of the chemical industry have inspired so much publicity that the feature writers assure us that we are entering a "Chemical Age," industrially as important as the "Steel Age" and the "Electric Age," so-called. Whether or not these assurances are overstatements, it is a fact that the expansion of the chemical industry during the past 25 years has been enormous. The Chemical Bureau of the War Production Board calculates the value of chemicals produced during 1944 at $8,300,000,000, no small sum even in inflated dollars. As concerns us of the Southwest oil and gas country, four significant trends of the chemical industry are most important. (1) Many of the recently developed chemical products are new creations, not substitutes,. as new and original as the invention of the light bulb, and with a field for exploitation almost as wide. (2) Many of these chemical products will enter the mass consuming markets, which require enormous tonnages of products, and such markets are setting up an industrial demand for chemicals on a mass volume basis, compared to the relatively high-priced low-volume basis ordinarily considered as the chemical outlet of the past. Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

The construction and use of the B.E.T. (gas adsorption) apparatus is described. Examples are given for the determination of large and small surface areas using nitrogen and krypton. Introduction A NY study of the milling of ores from crushing to grinding, classification, and concentration and finally dewatering of the products involves solid particles which are either in contact with a gas or a liquid phase. The surface area of the solid and its characteristics constitute important parameters in all mineral dressing operations. The success of any particular operation is dependent on the interaction of the surface of the solid particles with the gas or the liquid phase. Particle size and specific surface (surface area per unit weight) continue to be important parameters in the flotation research associated with the adsorption of collector molecules or ions on mineral particles, as in the early years of mineral dressing research (1). In order to understand the mechanism of the flotation process, it is essential that the surface properties of the adsorbent be known.

The service life for aluminium reduction cells is often limited by the cathode carbon, due to preferential wear along the periphery of the cell leading to the so-called "W" wear pattern. The reason for this preferential wear is not well understood. Two mechanisms are suggested in the present paper; 1) non-stationary dissolution of aluminium carbide into a layer of sludge that periodically forms and disappears, and 2) electrochemical formation and dissolution of aluminium carbide within an aluminium carbide layer containing bath-filled pores. The latter mechanism may be related to the high local current density at the periphery of the cathode.

The paper discusses the treatment problem of mine (waste) water for enterprises of the Russian Arctic. The wide range of relevant pollutants, financial resources, the availability of land for the construction of a treatment plant, waste generated during the treatment process are some of the factors controlling current and future process design solutions. All mining operations have adopted water treatment and water quality monitoring solutions, however there is no single approach to the problem and each industry participant operates within the scope of its available resources. The range of existing and emerging methods is extensive — from using constructed wetlands for the deposition of mineral nitrogen compounds in settling ponds, reagent deposition and chemical coagulation in exhausted mine workings, and filtering dams on the surface to retrofitting existing mine drainage treatment plants with the adoption of the electrochemical coagulation process. Methods of wastewater treatment from heavy metals, oil products, and nitrogen compounds are demonstrated in the example of two industrial facilities in the Murmansk region. It was found that the use of electrochemical coagulation provides effective treatment of mine water from NO3, NO2, Ni, Fetotal and petroleum hydrocarbons (the degree of purification from 50.5-99.7%), the use of phytotreatment system provides wastewater treatment from ammonium ions and nitrite ions by 53-84%, nitrate ions - by 22%. "In this study, a low-grade ferruginous low-grade chromite ore was subjected to reduction roasting by using conventional heating as well as microwave heating. Sukinda chromite ore deposit contains majorly iron-bearing minerals as gangue phase. The magnetic susceptibility of these minerals enhances effectively after reduction roasting. Alteration of crystalline structure and magnetic property of these metals enables separation of low-grade ore by using magnetic separation. Conventional roasting studies by varying the temperature, time of reduction and reductant dosage were changed for low-grade ferruginous chromite ore. Similarly, microwave power, retention/exposure time and reductant dosage varied for reduction roasting studies under microwave environment. It is found that low-grade ferruginous chromite ore can be upgraded by reduction roasting and 61.2% Cr2O3 was recovered with a chromium-to-iron ratio of 1.93 from feed chromium-to-iron ratio of 1. Microwave reduction roasting studies resulted in upgradation of chromium-to-iron ratio to 1.73 with a recovery of 21% Cr2O3.INTRODUCTION The chromite ore occurs as a spinel containing oxides of chromium, iron, magnesium and aluminium. Most of the Indian chromite deposits are of ferruginous (rich in iron content) which indicates the abundance of ferruginous gangue minerals along with chromite. The primary use of chromite ore is towards the production of ferrochrome alloys. Chromite ores with less than 40% Cr2O3 and the chromium-to-iron ratio (Cr-to-Fe ratio) <1.8 is considered to be unsuitable for the smelting process (Tripathy et al. 2012, Tripathy et al. 2012a). A considerable amount of low-grade chromite ore and overburden excavated during chromite mining is getting accumulated every year, causing a threat to the environment. Its disposal poses a significant challenge and, hence, the beneficiation of low-grade chromite ore and its utilisation has been attracting a lot of attention. Different physical method of beneficiation methods is generally employed for the improvement of the Cr-to-Fe ratio (Tripathy et al. 2012, Murthy et al. 2011, Tripathy et al. 2012a, Tripathy et al. 2013, Tripathy et al. 2016, Tripathy et al. 2017, Tripathy et al. 2017a). It is observed that the enrichment of the chromite ore is carried out by using gravity and in some places by magnetic separation. However, the enrichment of Cr-to-Fe ratio from low-grade ferruginous chromite ore is difficult by using the above-mentioned beneficiation methods due to the presence of near gravity and near-magnetic susceptibility minerals along with chromite. However, an alternative beneficiation method is needed to explore for the beneficiation of such mineral deposits. Reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation is an alternative option for the separation of these types of ores which is widely reported for the iron and manganese ore (Li, et al., 2010; Chun, et al., 2014, Rath et al., 2018). These processes are majorly focussed on differentiating the magnetic susceptibility between minerals and subsequent separation by using magnetic field. The main advantage of such method is dry process option along with the pre-processed product for the costly smelting process. Also, the roasting of minerals in a microwave environment is also an active research topic in the recent time. So, the amenability of the separation feature of the roasting process by using conventional heating as well as microwave heating can be can be studied for the low grade ferruginous chromite ores."

"The 15,000-tpd Similkameen open-pit copper mine, 10 miles south of Princeton, B.C., started production during 1972. The two main ore zones are separated by the deep canyon of the Similkameen River, with the Ingerbelle or western deposit being mined first. The location, design and construction of the plant were complicated by the steep terrain and the situation of the orebodies. Mining, utilizing 10-cu.yd electric shovels and 100-ton electric-wheel trucks, is conventional. Closely integrated with the preproduction mining was the construction of a 4-mile section of main highway to bypass the Ingerbelle pit. This entailed a very large fill, placed with mine equipment. Ore is crushed to minus 9 inches, stockpiled and reclaimed for direct delivery to three 32-ft-diameter by 14• ft single-stage autogenous grinding mills, each driven by two 4000-hp motors. Because of the friable ore in the upper part of the mine, 4-inch balls are added, with higher than design throughput attained. Classification is by 91>-inch spiral classifiers and cyclones. The flotation section comprises three parallel lines of ten 400-cu.ft rougher- scavenger cells and a single line of 100-cu.ft cleaner and recleaner cells. Concentrate is transported in end dump, closed trucks to Vancouver for dockside storage prior to shipment to the smelter. Tailings are piped across the canyon on a suspension bridge and through a tunnel to an empoundment area. Water is reclaimed and returned to the concentrator, forming a closed system. Dams are raised with cycloned ands, with the downstream section compacted."

Polymeric hydrogels are natural or synthetic systems, which have gained interest due to their high biocompatibility with soft tissues. These types of hydrogels have been used for wound dressing as a drug delivery system. Here in this study the polymeric hydrogels based wound healing systems were prepared using poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), agar and neomycin drug followed by gamma irradiation to promote crosslinking and sterilization. The influence of irradiation process with 25 kGy dose was investigated. The gel fraction and maximum swelling were estimated using physicochemical methods and found about 95% gel fraction and 1100% swelling after 8 h of immersion. Neomycin released from hydrogel was carried out by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry method and the drug concentration remained constant for 48 h. Hydrogel/neomycin exhibited antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus. With these results, it can be inferred that hydrogel/neomycin is a suitable candidate for wound dressing.

With the increasing rate of tailing production worldwide there is a growing concern about the hazards of tailings storage facilities (TSF). Past and current mining, processing and waste disposal strategies that focus on the extraction of the valuable minerals, and an economic assessment only, are no longer suitable. Social implications and environmental legacies must be included for effective evaluation. This is possible by using an integrated assessment framework to evaluate more alternatives, including the production of additional saleable and benign streams, alternative tailings treatment and disposal as well as options for reuse, recycling and preprocessing of existing tailings. Tailings are not viewed as a final waste product but as part of the resource. From the sustainability perspective the models developed in integrated research programs will contribute to more effective methods for assessing different scenarios and potential processes and lead to better environmental management, increased production of benign tailings and improved efficiency of water and energy use and thus more responsible resource stewardship of the ore resource.This paper presents preliminary results from a multiyear research program on integrated tailings management at the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), The University of Queensland, called ‘Designer Tailings’. The project involves the gathering of experimental and observational information on tailings biogeochemical processes to design and modify the range of activities within mineral processing plants, upstream characterisation ore and gangue, and downstream tailings management for desired tailings properties and outcomes.
