Formulas relating economic optimum busbar cross sectional areas to busbar cost, electric price and financial parameters are reviewed and revised. Application of the formulas is illustrated with discussion of the appropriate choice of parameter values and the sensitivity of the optimum to the parameters. The extension of the single busbar concept to optimization of more complicated arrangements of bus for smelting pots is complicated by the constraint of obtaining a specified current distribution. An example problem illustrates the optimization of a section of a bus network containing a fork, with the imposed limitation of achieving a specified uniformity in the current. In cases where the current in the individual conductors may vary, Kelvin's law does not apply. Further extension of the technique to a full pot set of conductors poses additional problems which are discussed, but whose solution has not yet been accomplished. "Titanium tetrachloride is produced through the chlorination of a variety of titanium bearing ores, some occurring in nature, and others enriched in titanium content by a variety of ""beneficiation"" processes. The chlorination step can produce a variety of metal chloride impurities, such as iron chlorides and vanadium chlorides, which must be removed from the TiC14 before it can be used to produce pigmentary TiO2, titanium metal or for any other commercial use. The requisite manipulations involve both physical and chemical separations in a multi-step process. The history of various purification strategies will be discussed.TextThere are a wide range of titanium-based products available, all of which start with titanoferrous ore of some type. Two main routes are used to convert ores into products, known as the sulfate and chloride processes. The sulfate process uses sulfuric acid to digest the ore, separate the impurities, and then precipitate titanium dioxide from the resulting titanyl sulfate (TiOSO4) via metatitanic acid. This process can also supply TiOS04 for other applications."

Many mining engineering graduates enter the mining industry lacking training in mine emergency management. As a result, mining universities in the United Sates and other countries are beginning to form volunteer student mine rescue teams to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and give them hands-on experience managing potential emergency scenarios underground. In the early 1980s, the Missouri University of Science and Technology developed the first collegiate mine rescue team in the United States. For approximately 30 years, it was the only successful collegiate team until the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) started its program in 2009. Currently, there are at least five collegiate teams in the United States and one in Canada. At the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology in Germany, the goal is to adapt the Colorado School of Mines Mine Rescue Program to develop a collegiate team of its own. Currently, mining engineering students cover the theoretical basics of mine rescue in an occupational health and safety lecture and take a basic, one-day mine rescue training course at the Central Mine Rescue Station in Leipzig. The course covers the basic mine rescue topics and gives students the opportunity to experience working in elevated heat and smoke conditions while wearing breathing apparatus. This training gives students a small insight into the importance of mine rescue and mine emergency management. Collegiate mine rescue teaches students the importance of mine rescue and mine safety by giving them hands-on learning experiences before entering the mining industry.

Binder, as a necessary functional material of electrode in lithium ion battery, has a vital influence on the electrochemical performance. The humics, coupled with polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), were used as a water-soluble binder for LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode using in lithium ion battery. The techniques of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge were conducted to evaluate the performance of humics binder in LFP electrode. The reversible specific capacity of LFP (HA + PAM + CMC) electrode can reach to 142 mAh g−1 after 50th cycling (100 mAh g−1) on conditions of raw materials with 1 wt% PAM addition, humics and CMC with a mass ratio of 3:1 in binder, and the raw materials mixed in an interval order. Humics has the potential to be used as a novel, eco-friendly and high-efficient binder for lithium-ion battery.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! "The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

Missouri River Division (FORD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), has completed (October 1982) a study for the U.S. Air Force Ballistic Missile Office, in which desireable and needed changes in contracting methods for underground construction were identified. Due to the importance of geotechnical considerations in such construction, a good number of the resulting recommendations relate to geotechnical considerations. Corps contracts have traditionally served as models for contract documentation by public agencies and in private enterprise. Several standard features of present-day contracting methods were Corps innovations. Corps officials are generally in agreement with the recommendations of the Better Contracting reports published by the U.S. National Research Council (NAS/NRC), through its U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNCTT). However, the findings of the 1982 MRD study indicate that additional changes are warranted for underground construction contracting methods; changes that deal specifically with site geological conditions, both known and to be reasonably anticipated, as well as with their associated impacts on construction. The 1982 MRD report identifies the need for nine specific improvements in geotechnical aspects of contracting; improvements based on recognition of geological conditions.

Spiral concentrators are one of the flowing film gravity concentration devices used to beneficiate coal and mineral ores. The aim of the current study is to understand the particulate flow and separation performance of an LD9 spiral concentrator using a multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model utilises the Algebraic slip mixture model to simulate particulate flows. The model employs the Renormalisation group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence models to resolve the fluid turbulence. Initially, the volume of fluid method was adopted to track the water-air interface. Simulations were then carried out at low (0.3 and 3 wt.%) and moderate (15 wt.%) solids concentrations. Multiple particle-phase representing particles of poly sizes (75–1400 µm) and multi-densities (1450–2650 kg/m3 ) were simulated to study the particle segregation on the spiral trough surface. The numerical predictions are compared with the literature performance data at a diluted pulp flow rate of 6 m3 /hr. The results were found in close agreement. Further, the same CFD model is used to study the change in pulp velocity, streamflow rates, and separation performance at increasing solids concentration. For the same density particles, Fine particles mostly show higher volume concentration in the middle and outer trough regions, whereas coarse particles show higher volume concentration in the interior and central trough regions. It implies that the fine particles mostly segregate towards the outer region, and dense particles segregate towards the axial column.

Wrought iron and steel have been prepared from limonite, hematite, and magnetite ores by gaseous reduction, compacting and squeezing the resulting product at high temperature and finally melting the wrought iron so formed. The structure, analyses, mechanical and magnetic properties of the products are given. It is found that the structure of iron ores is best studied by subjecting them to gaseous reduction and using metallographic technique on the resulting sponge iron. In this way the cell structure of iron ore is clearly shown. The wrought iron made by heating compacted sponge iron to 1450" C., and forging, shows a cell structure inherited from the ore. This cell structure is further preserved in melting and casting the wrought iron. The probable relation of the properties of the materials to this inherited cell structure is discussed.

A South African chromite sample was subjected to characterisation and physical beneficiation testwork in order to assess its suitability to produce an upgraded chromite product with a silica level of <1 per cent SiO2 and a chromite level of >46 per cent Cr2O3. Chemical analysis by XRF indicated that the bulk material had a Cr2O3 content of 40.5 per cent w/w and a SiO2 content of 7.5 per cent w/w. Combined XRF analysis with sizing data showed that the majority (~70 per cent) of the siliceous material was present in the +600 ¦m fraction while ~70 per cent of the Cr2O3 was in the -600 ¦m fraction. Qualitative mineral phase analysis by XRD indicated that the sample mineralogy was dominated by ferrian-magnesiochromite spinel ([Fe,Mg]Cr2O4) and aluminium-chromite spinel (Fe[Al,Cr]2O4), with enstatite (Mg2Si2O6), haematite (Fe2O3) and anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) as minor phases. SEM and EMP characterisation showed that the silica was mainly present in discrete enstatite grains but lesser amounts were also present as the high silica phases plagioclase and enstatite on the edge of grains. Wet gravity separation performed on sized fractions (-600+106 ¦m size range) from the -2.0 mm (primary) ore as well as the ore that had been crushed to pass 0.6 mm (secondary) showed that stage crushing of the -2 mm +600 ¦m fraction followed by wet gravity separation upgraded the Cr2O3 grade at 70 per cent Cr2O3 recovery from ~44 per cent Cr2O3 in the primary material to 46 per cent Cr2O3 (the target grade specification) in the secondary sample. It also showed that the stage crushing of this +600 ¦m fraction at a cut-off level of one per cent SiO2 increased the cumulative Cr2O3 recovery from ~50 per cent in the primary material to ~63 per cent in the secondary sample in the same size range of -600+106 ¦m. The extent to which additional crushing could lead to improved chromite recoveries at the required chromite and silica grade target specifications was not determined. This experience demonstrates that prior to processing test work being conducted, a thorough understanding of the chemistry and mineralogy of the test sample promotes efficient and targeted processing research.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE art of crushing ores and other materials by means of rolls is a comparatively recent one. While the first record of rolls using iron crushing-surfaces dates back to the year 1806, when they were employed in Cornwall, their principal development has taken place during the last 30 years. To Stephen R. Krom belongs the credit of the pioneer in introducing the belted high-speed roll, which has had its origin and a marked development in this country. His notable contribution to the art was in the use of a single bed-plate or frame supporting the roll-shafts, and to which levers holding the movable roll-bearings were pivoted. He also made use of steel tension-rods to support the crushing-strains, and of hammered-steel tires for the crushing-surfaces. These changes brought the design of crushing-rolls to a high level. Following closely thereon, about 1885, W. R. Eckart conceived the idea of the swivel or ball-and-socket support for the roll-shaft bearings. This is an excellent mechanical conception, especially for bearings held against a spring pressure, and while it may not be necessary for all types of rolls, yet it has been quite generally adopted by other roll-designers, and illustrates the refinement which roll-construction has now reached. Other engineers, as for example, Argall, Vezin, Roger, and Sturtevant, to mention only a few among many, have also given the closest attention to the various details of rolls, such as the frame, springs, bearings, and shafts, and have developed many novel and original designs. It has remained, however, for the boldness and originality of Mr. Edison to extend the field of crushing-rolls in two new directions, and to cause them to exercise new functions. In developing crushing-machinery for his Portland cement works, Mr. Edison constructed ? giant " rolls, having a diameter of 6 ft. and a length of. face of 7 ft.

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

Prior to 1908 the oil production in the State of California had been almost entirely a heavy fuel oil, with a high flash point, but changed within a short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the heavy production of light oil coming in from the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. This is clearly shown in the following tabulation of California's pro- The bringing in of these high percentages of light oil with their dangerous low flash and the increasing demand for the refined products necessitated the devising of some cheap and efficient means of quickly separating the lighter elements either in the field or at the main distributing points; also it became necessary to remove the excessive percentage of water which many of the light oils carried in emulsion. Port Harford Plant Probably the first important attempt to top light oil in California by other means than the ordinary stills was tried about 1908 by the Union Oil Co., at its plant at Port Harford, San Luis Obispo County, with Santa Maria oils. The process was the invention of Hubert G. Burroughs who afterward obtained a patent for the process, No. 998,837, dated July 25, 1911. The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

"Reiche Zeche is a lead-zinc-silver deposit in Freiberg, Germany, that was mined for over 800 years. Since 1969, Reiche Zeche has been a teaching and research mine with numerous adits for dewatering large amounts of inflowing water. Infrequent metal water quality monitoring in the 1980-1990s and flooding of the mine in 2002 led to a lack of relevant data. New measurements were taken at different level adits and ore veins for comparison to historical values, revealing pH levels as low as 1.95, conductivity as high as 22000 µS/cm, and an overall trend towards less acidic waters. INTRODUCTION Reiche Zeche is part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, a former iron ore mine in Freiberg, Germany, in the Erzgebirge mining region of Saxony. The polymetallic sulfide ore found in Freiberg was mined from 1168 to 1969, and though it is no longer producing ore, Reiche Zeche remains as a teaching and research mine for the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg. The most important ore minerals mined were sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and silver, and important gangue minerals include calcite, fluorite, barite, siderite, and quartz (Zänker et al 2002). Over one thousand ore loads were mined from this region during operation, which was ceased in 1969 after the lower part of the 700 meter depth was flooded, leaving only the top 200 meters under the surface open for research and teaching. Mined materials from this region can be separated into high grade ore and waste rock. High grade ore, composed of pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite, was brought to surface for smelting during mine operation, and spaces were backfilled with waste rock, which is the primary site of sulfide oxidation and acid mine drainage (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). The waste rock includes remnants of ore from ore loss, veins which were too small to mine, or ore minerals within host rock. Waste rock is primarily composed of biotite gneiss, with sulfides including jarosite, gypsum, minor anglesite, scorodite, and sulfur (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). When weathered, the gneiss forms clay minerals such as illite and kaolinite (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002)."

"The DC continuous casting of a grain refined AI-4.5%Cu round ingot with realistic boundary conditions is numerically simulated. Of particular interest are the effects of the transport of free solid in the form of equiaxed grains on the macro segregation patterns and the final grain size distribution. The study uses a previously developed two-phase model that incorporates descriptions of heat transfer, solute redistribution, melt convection, and solid transport on the system scale with microscopic models of solutal undercooling, microsegregation and grain impingement. The numerical results indicate that grain transport inhibits the formation of inverse segregation in the ingot shell and promotes negative centerline segregation. This is explained by the reduction in the solid coherency next to the mold and the advection of solute-lean grains towards the centerline. Comparisons with the experiments of Finn et al. [5] illustrate the need for considerable improvements in the model. IntroductionMacrosegregation continues to be one of the concerns in DC continuous casting of aluminum ingots. The variation in composition over the ingot cross section results in the need to adjust alloy composition in order to meet mechanical property specifications in finished products. The extent of macrosegregation is greatly affected by the casting conditions, such as casting speed, superheat, cooling rate, mold size, alloy composition, and grain refining practices. Thus, it is of great interest to develop a comprehensive mathematical model to simulate the casting process, enabling the selection of conditions that minimize macrosegregation while maintaining a high productivity."

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ spectrum of the hydroxyl (· OH) radical spin adduct with .the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolintt-N-oxide has been obtained in suspensions of freshly ground quartz particles. The concentration of the spin adduct (and hence of the • OH radicals) increases with the amount of grinding. The dust's potential for the generation of the· OH radicals is maximum when fresh (i.e., immediately after grinding) and decreases to 50% in about a day on storage in air. Studies involving metal chelates .indicate that the • OH radical formation involves mainly the silica surface and H20 rather than the Fenton reaction. The results suggest that hydroxyl radical reaction(s) could be important in the lipid peroxidation and fibrogenicity by quartz dust, particularly .in acute silicosis. INTRODUCTIONIn this paper we report on our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of the formation of hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in aqueous suspensions of freshly crushed quartz particles. This work was undertaken with a view to find possible clues to the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of quartz-induced fibrogenicity, commonly known as silicosis. We noted that while silicosis is one of the major health hazards in coal and mineral industries, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly ·understood (Reiser and Last, 1979; Singh and .Rahman, 1987). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the action of quartz particles on the biological membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (Parazzi et - al., 1968). A possible clue to the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz particles, in terms of the role of oxygenated free radicals, is suggested by the following observations. A suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported (Gabor et al., 1975; Koike et al., 1982) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids. Hydroxyl (· OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985) and of initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes. (Fong et al., 1973). Arong other lines, it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids, and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates· OH radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985). Thus • OH radicals (and also other oxygenated species such as Oi, 10 2, and H20 2) might be expected to play a role in the toxicity of quartz. Earlier studies of the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of H2O 2 (Kalbanev et al., 1980), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species. However, we are not aware of any report of the detection of • OH radicals in quartz reactions, and thus the present study was undertaken. Since it-is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short lifetime) in aqueous media, the • OH radicals cannot be detected via ESR directly (Finkelstein et al., 1980; Buettner, 1982) we have used .ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (Finkelstein et al., 1980) for studying the· OH formation. The results show that· OH radicals are indeed formed in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz; thus pointing to ·a possible new clue to the cytotoxicity of freshly formed quartz particles and thereby to silica fibrogenicity."

"INTRODUCTION An important phase of the accident-preventing program of the Bureau Mines is the determination of the explosion hazards of various combustible gases, vapors, and liquids encountered in mining and allied industries and the development of methods of eliminating or mitigating them.Recently, isobutane has become a commercially important raw material in the production of aviation gasoline by the alkylation process. 4/ in which isoparaffins are combined with olefins to give higher molecular weight compounds of branched-chain structure.Because of the anticipated commercial importance of isobutane in industry, it has been deemed necessary to study and determine its general explosion haz¬ards. Introduction Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement over coal-fired boiler design. It offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFBC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling that can in turn increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. AFBC process The fluidized bed boiler that operates at atmospheric pressure on the fire side (AFBC) is relatively simple and no different in purpose from those pulverized coal boilers used by utilities today. Fluidized bed boilers can generate steam at the pressure and temperature needed by modern steam turbines. Only the firing system is different. In fluidized bed combustion, the fuel can be almost any coal or waste fuel. It is burned in the presence of a bubbling bed of limestone. Air is forced through the bed at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of the bed particles. When the bed is fully fluidized, it bubbles like a boiling liquid. Although the burning coal makes up less than 1% of the fluidized bed, all the bed particles are heated quickly by the turbulence. The calcium in limestone reacts with sulfur dioxide produced in coal combustion to form calcium sulfate in a dry solid state. In this way, sulfur emissions regulations can be met without installing flue gas desulfurization equipment. Boiler tubes submerged in the bed absorb heat directly from the turbulent solids. The heat converts water in the tubes to steam or superheats the steam. Because of the intimate contact of the boiler tubes with the fluidized bed, heat transfer is highly efficient. Consequently, less boiler tubing surface is needed to generate the same amount of steam as in a comparable pulverized coal boiler. The optimum temperature for sulfur capture is relatively low, about 815°C (1500°F) as opposed to 1370°C (2500°F) for pulverized coal boilers. This results in the formation of lower levels of NON. Because operating temperatures are below those that fuse coal ash, a single design can burn a variety of coals without slagging or fouling problems. TVA's AFBC development program Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) involvement in AFBC development began in 1974 and has addressed the technical uncertainties through a comprehensive program of design, experimental, and analytical studies. In 1979, TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) developed plans for a 20-MW AFBC pilot plant, a 10-fold scale-up over the next largest test facility.
