The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

The purpose of this project is to increase the visibility of which will be daily produced on the hot strip mill (HSM). The forecast was performed through the implementation of an automated tool for weekly HSM production planning. The project was started with the definition of the weekly planning process, through the determination of the main business objectives, like as: priorities of service (customers and delivery date), definition of HSM’s rules and restrictions of operating resources. Using a sophisticated mathematical model, through the computational simulation is possible the experimentation of various production scenarios, allowing the visualization of volumes by type of sequence, clients / priorities, mix to be produced, cylinder change quantity forecast, better forecasting of the productivity of the HSM, consumption of utilities, within others. Main benefits: sequencing which production orders should be produced, reducing unforeseen stops due lack of material, improving the quality of the stock which allows the reduction of the aging of slabs in the slabyard and the vision of customer services. Computational simulation as a weekly planning tool achieve, with other benefits, to present alternatives for better decision making.

The Construction of the Northeast Extension of the Baltimore Metro involved soft ground, compressed air tunneling. During the tunneling, gasoline and dry cleaning fluid contamination were encountered. Innovative approaches and solutions were developed to address these problems. Special emphasis was on the problem of compressed air pushing gasoline vapors into surrounding communities, resulting in an extremely dangerous situation and a public relations nightmare. Guidelines and standards were established for working in this contaminated environment. Also, through a proactive approach by all parties, all claims and disputes have been resolved.

A new blasting technique has been developed by International Technologies, LLC. to eliminate subgrade drilling, lower ground vibrations, improve fragmentation and reduce explosive consumption. The new technique utilizes a uniquely designed borehole plug, with a bottom hole air deck and a predetermined stemming mass on top of the plug. This combination is referred to as the Power Deck?. Single holes and full scale tests were conducted by Blasting Analysis International, Inc. (BAI) to determine how the system works, the mechanisms behind its success and the best design parameters to use for the given rock conditions. Results have shown reduced or eliminated subgrade drilling, ground vibration reductions of up to 33%, reduced explosive consumption by 16 to 25%, and improved fragmentation by up to 25%. This paper summarizes the methodology, field test setups, analyzes procedures and results for one series of single hole and full-scale tests which were performed in a Pennsylvania, USA quarry.

Spectral reflectance data for 335 minerals, including 228 minimum-maximum combinations for anisotropic minerals giving a total of 563 data sets, have been collected from the literature and combined into a single database. Quantitative color values for x, y, Y, Ad , and Pe referred to ICI standard i11uminant C have been calculated from the spectral reflectance data and are included in the database. The programs plot spectral reflectance curves together with all quantitative color data for each mineral in the database. The plots and data can be directed to a dot-matrix printer such that a databook of quantitative color and spectral reflectance having one mineral per page can be generated for the ore microscopy laboratory. In addition, by sorting the database and grouping the minerals, groups or individual minerals can be plotted on the chromaticity diagram, and this plot can also be sent to a dot-matrix printer. The programs are written in compiled BASICA for an IBM-PC with graphics capabilities and at least 128KB random access memory (RAM). The databases are accessible either through the BASIC programs or through any commercial database system capable of loading and writing to an ASCII format sequential file. The programs and database are available by sending a blank diskette and self addressed, stamped envelope to the authors.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to investigate the ease of frictional ingition with frozen (nonrotating) conical bits cutting into sandstone. The number of strikes with a new bit to obtain ignition of a combustible methane-air environment was measured. Tests were made with bits tipped with both tungsten carbide and steel at several bit attack angles (angle between bit axis and sandstone surface) and initial tip angles (included angle at the tip of the new bit). Carbide-tipped bits required more strikes for ingition than steel-tipped bits, by a factor of 7 to 10. With a carbide-tipped bit, the number of strikes for ingition increased by a factor of about 3 if the bit attack angle increased by 10° or if the initial tip angle decreased by 10°. During use, abrasive wear of the frozen bit caused a flat surface to form at the tip of the bit, thereby decreasing the tip angle. As the attack angle increased, however, the new bit involved a smaller wear-flat area whereby, abrasive wear was decreased.

The design and operational aspects of fluidised solids transfer-cooling devices will be discussed in this presentation. The devices include air slides and fluoseals (also called seal pots, loop seals, etc), which are widely used in metallurgical plants and other processing plants. Cooling can be achieved while solids are transported in the solids transfer devices. The units combining solids transfer and cooling provide compact and clean plant layouts and also reduce capital and operational costs. Fluidised devices provide excellent gas-to-solids and gas/solids-to-surface heat transfer rates, hence high cooling efficiency. Fluidising gas, such as air, nitrogen or other gases, can be used as direct cooling mediums. Coolants such as water, steam and other liquid or gas cooling fluids can be used as indirect cooling mediums via tube coils immersed in the fluidised solids. The fluidised transport devices share some common features with fluidised bed equipment. The air slide is similar to a linear fluidised bed while the fluoseal is similar to a circular fluidised bed. Therefore fluidised bed design techniques are applicable to the design of the air slides and fluoseals. The heat and mass balance and temperature profiles of the devices concerned will be discussed in the presentation. The design criteria and operational philosophies of the critical components such as tuyeres and air spargers will also be discussed.

With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

"The new third Bridge over Narmada River at Bharuch which was recently completed is characterized by some aesthetically appealing elevations of the pylon and large size of the deck. This paper gives an insight to design and construction technique adopted for foundation construction of Extra-dosed span - 3 rd Narmada Bridge at Bharuch over river Narmada, Gujarat. Site being located in intertidal zone had its unique geological characteristics and own set of difficulties during construction.INTRODUCTIONThe Indian subcontinent offers diverse subsoil conditions. With current modern and future trend of long span bridges the substructure design often demands large size foundations. The foundation of theses bridges are usually deep and large in size. The execution of such foundations in maritime environments often involves important temporary works, in order to provide a safe workplace, comply with environmental requirements and achieve high quality standards.Often Pile foundations are preferred solution now a days, but due to various statutory and environmental regulations their construction poses a challenge. With better equipment and corresponding quality control, construction of large diameter pile foundation has emerged as a faster and reliable option.OVER VIEW OF THE PROJECTThe first two lane bridge on NH-8 (Vadodra – Mumbai) known as Sardar Bridge was constructed in 1977, subsequently an additional two lane bridge was constructed in 1999-2000, 29 m downstream of the first. In view of rising volume of traffic and as part of upgradation of NH8, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proposed to construct 3rd new 4 Lane Bridge 100 m downstream of 2nd Narmada Bridge, based on Central Water and Power research Institute (CWPRS) study and recommendation.The general layout (fig. 1) of the 3rd Narmada bridge has 8 spans of 144 m and 2 spans of 96 m with total length of 1344 m, supported by132 nos. of 1.5 m diameter piles of about 50 m depth. The substructure has leaning “Y” shaped lower pylon of height 30 m together with cast in situ pier diaphragm. The piles are of M40 and superstructure & pylon of M50 grade of concrete."

Consideration is given to creater formation with shallow, contained, chemical explosions in rock masses which exhibit different inherent physical and mechanical properties as determined by standard laboratory techniques. The primary purpose is to determine whether or not a simple but useful generalized correlation can be established between explosive crater formation and one or more common rock properties. Such a correlation could be beneficial in predicting with some degree of reliability the size of a crater which could be expected in a particular rock type for a given input of explosive energy. A series of crater formation experiments employing constant weight charges of Gelex 2 explosive was conducted in five submembers of the taconite formation at the eastern end of the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota. Five mechanical and physical properties-unconfined tensile and compressive strengths, Young's modulus of elasticity, longitudinal wave velocity, and density-were determined by conventional laboratory techniques using core samples from the taconite submembers. Although insufficient data were obtained to warrant the use of mathematical methods in the determination of empirical relationships, the results provided a fairly strong indication that with an increase in magnitude of any one of the five rock properties definite decreases in the optimum crater volume and surface area occur. Furthermore, for a constant explosive energy input, the presence of bedding planes and joint systems in a rock mass influences the formation of craters in such a manner as to increase the volume of rock broken substantially above that expected from the same rock mass without joint systems and, in particular, without bedding planes.

This study is concerned with the behavior of bubble clusters in a well-controlled turbulent flow. We used a specially designed cell where the bubble aggregates could be formed and exposed to breakage by a rotating impeller. The effects of impeller speed and the concentration of collector on cluster behavior were studied. It was found that the size of the clusters increases with the concentration of collector used. We also found that although the clusters could easily be destroyed under the action of impeller, they could reform, especially at lower impeller speeds. It was observed that the size of the bubbles arriving into the impeller region in the absence of particles before breakage was considerably higher than the size of the clusters formed at the same impeller speed. It appears that both cluster breakage and re-formation take place simultaneously, and the extent of formation and regrowth is mainly determined by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the impeller speed.

Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. Magnesia spinel (MgO.Al203) recovered from dusting slags in the system MgO.Al203-2Ca0.SiO2 is in the form of single crystals most of which will pass 35-mash. This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the concentrates as a refractory raw material. Three specific types of refractory bricks were studied: (1) dense, (2) lightweight bubble, and (3) insulating. Test specimens ware fabricated 1 by dry pressing, fired to 1,675° C., and tested by procedures common to the industry. The concentrates produced a refractor, having satisfactory density and mechanical strength; however, spinal is sensitive to thermal shock and the possibility of producing a spall-resistant brick using aggregate of such small grain-size must be considered remote. Lightweight refractorias fabricated of spinel bubbles were the most promising of the types tested. They were 30 percent lighter in sight than the dense refractory, their mechanical strength was good, and definite superiority in thermal shock resistance was indicated.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting laboratory-scale research to determine the leaching conditions required with sulfuric acid for extracting base metal from a matte with a copper-to-nicke1 ratio of 6 to 1. The matte (61.2 pct Cu, 9.7 pct Ni, 3.3 pct Fe, 21 pct S, and about 5 oz of precious metals per ton) was prepared from Duluth Complex (Minnesota) ore by smelting a bulk sulfide flotation concentrate. The matte was pre leached at atmospheric pressure to selectively extract 20 pct of the nickel, and the undissolved solids were referred to as the matte residue. Autoclave leaching of the matte residue extracted over 95 pct of the nickel, copper, and iron. The remaining leach residue in the autoclave contained over 100 oz of precious metals per ton. The leaching conditions required were matte grind of greater than 98 pct minus 325 mesh, pulp concentration of 50 g/1, total pressure of 100 psig with oxygen at 150° C or 400 psig with air at 180° C, 50 g/1 H2S04, 700 rpm agitator speed, and 6 hours of leaching time. The leaching time was decreased to 2 hours by increasing the agitator speed to 1,300 rpm. Sulfuric acid concentration greater than 50 g/1 did not appreciably enhance the base metal extraction, but with less acid, residues with higher iron concentrations were obtained. Supersaturation of the liquor was prevented at 150° C by using a 1ixiviant that contained 30 g/l Ni and 20 g/1 Cu.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

Creighton Mine is part of the mining history of Sudbury with more than 100 years of operation. Currently the deeper levels of the mine are reaching the 8000 ft level without implementation of mechanical refrigeration system as a result of the use of the Natural Heat Exchange Area (NHEA) over the past decades. The NHEA of Creighton Mine is part of an old block caving area divided into 4 blocks of trenches that were used to extract the ore. Currently, it is used year round to condition the outside temperature before the airflow enters the fresh air system of the mine. As the mine is progressing deeper, underground temperatures in the lower levels are starting to approach the limit of Vale?s guidelines for working in heat. This paper presents the study developed to improve the management of the NHEA to obtain cooler temperatures at the intake of the ventilation system and outlines the impact to the mine in terms of the additional level(s) that could be operated underground without the use of mechanical refrigeration. This is another of the efforts currently under development for energy conservation and to reduce the capital and operational costs of Creighton Mine while extending the expected life of the mine.

Multiple indicator kriging (MIK) has been used in the minerals industry for some decades. As one of the non-linear estimation methodologies, MIK has advantages related to resolving multiple or mixed populations, high variability data and strongly skewed distributions. Applying the MIK methodology requires a lot more effort when compared to other non-linear methodologies, for example localised uniform conditioning. This is due not only to the variogram modelling for multiple indicators, but the validation is also very important because the panel model is fundamental for follow-up work, including the generation of recoverable resources at the local or SMU scale. Apart from this, only a few reported case studies of MIK have documented post-processing of the estimated modelled distribution, representing the probability distribution at point scale at un-sampled locations. The MIK post processing should include the change of support from the point scale to the panel scale, and then the extraction of quantile values from the panel conditional cumulative distribution function (CCDF) for localisation of grades into the SMUs within each panel, based on a ranking estimate marking the SMUs from high to low. In this paper, we present a case study on a gold deposit with the MIK method with full-post processing implemented for recoverable resources. The MIK point estimate was carried out with an indirect lognormal change of support from point to panel scale, and localisation was done with a custom script. The localised uniform conditioning (LUC) method was also applied for comparison purposes. The comparison shows that MIK has advantages compared to LUC when comes to capturing the high-grades, especially when mixed or varying anisotropy is present within the mineralisation.

Refractory ores need to be pretreated prior to cyanide leaching for acceptable gold recovery. Pressure oxidation is one method of rendering the ores more suitable for cyanidation. The focus of this work is optimisation of autoclave configuration for pressure oxidation. An autoclave for the pressure oxidation of a feed containing pyrite and arsenopyrite was modelled, using the population balance framework. The autoclave model takes into account feed particle size, reaction kinetics and retention time. Mass balance calculations were incorporated into Cycad Process« software. This allowed for the investigation of different circuit configurations. The base case model consists of a single autoclave. The feed was then doubled and additional autoclaves were added to provide the same residence time as the base case. Four different configurations for the additional equipment were simulated. These were parallel, series, series with inter-stage thickening and parallel-series circuits. The options are compared in terms of extraction and productivity. The parallel circuit behaves similarly to the base case. The series and series-parallel circuits have higher recoveries and productivities than the base case. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening provides the highest extraction and productivity. This is because the thickening reduces the slurry volume and increases the residence time of the solids in the downstream autoclave.CITATION:Saloojee, F and Crundwell, F K, 2013. Modern mine ventilation systems have grown rapidly in recent years both in tern of its complexities as well as its value for human health and safety. Although computer models are now available to help the design and operation of mine ventilation systems, considerable differences often exist between the computer based predictions and practical results. Research conducted to compare computer result with practical measurements made in ventilation circuits simulated in a physical model seems to confirm such differences. It is concluded that although a mine ventilation computer model is a very powerful tool, it can be utilized to its full potential only after more reliable input data are developed.

The study area, which comprises 11,500 acres, includes the 9,610-acre Whitewater Wilderness Study Area, in the California Desert Conservation Area, 15 miles northwest of Palm Springs, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of prospects and mineralized areas during the spring of 1981. The Whitewater study area is mainly underlain by granodiorite to quartz diorite and their gneissic equivalents in an igneous-metamorphic complex. Late Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks locally overlie the crystalline complex in the eastern part of the study area. The study area lies between branches of the San Andreas fault system.
