"The moisture in sintering is a very important parameter for the performance of the process. It allows that the granulation takes pace in an efficient way making the water bridges between the bigger particles used as nucleus and the finer particles that perform the coating of those coarse particles. The formation of the micro pellets is extremely important to prevent loss in permeability of the bed in the sintering grate, avoiding excessive fuel consumption and producing a quality sinter. The aim of this project is to use some of the methodologies for determine the saturation degree on ores and coal to determine the optimal moisture for sintering. In the sinter pot grate series, 3 to 4 assays in a series of 10 are required to determine the optimal moisture for the process. The saturation degree curve test has shown that is really viable to use this technique to skip those tests and go directly to the series to determine productivity and the coke / anthracite consumption. In an industrial scale can be used to adjust the water addition in the conventional mixing methods used in the sintering plants to increase productivity in the process.INTRODUCTION Sintering Sintering is a high temperature agglomeration process in which iron ore fines are partially melted and bonded together using fluxes and a source of fuel, usually coke breeze. The agglomerated product, sinter, has improved metallurgical properties making it an ideal ferrous burden that enable the passage of hot gases in the iron-making blast furnace. The sintering process is normally carried out over three basic stages: granulation, ignition/sintering, and product sizing. In the granulation stage, iron ore fines (usually a blend of selected ores), sinter return fines, fluxes and fuel, and are mixed with water and micro-pelletised in a drum or disc before being introduced in the main granulation circuit. Several processes involving injection of sorbent and humidification water downstream of the air preheater in a coal-fired boiler unit, are being developed as low capital cost retrofit S02 control options. Extensive laboratory work, pilot plant programs and larger scale programs have developed performance data and design information. Many of these programs were supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as "proofs-of-concept" of three different processes proposed by Dravo, Bechtel and General Electric. Based on these project results, DOE formulated a comprehensive in-duct sorbent injection development program to fully commercialize the technology by 1992. Also, EPRI will conduct a 4 MWe pilot program to develop its HYPAS process. The Consol Coolside process is scheduled for utility demonstration in 1989 on a 104 MWe unit at the Ohio Edison Edgewater Station under partial sponsorship of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for removing dragline bucket wire rope terminations with the objective of finding efficient methods that are safer than the method most commonly used at U.S. surface mines, which is to use the explosive impact of a projectile fired from a cannon to remove the rope termination. Removal of a wire rope termination for repair or replacement requires separation of the wedge and socket that lock together to secure the rope end. The Bureau investigated currently used methods and improved upon and tested two safer alternate methods for removing wire rope terminations. A cannon test program was conducted, using 40-and 50-gr primer (detonating) cord, to establish the possible force produced with a 4-in-bore cannon and a 55-lb projectile. Wedge and socket units supplied from cooperating mines were separated under controlled conditions to establish data on separation force requirements. The two alternate methods investigated were use of the force generated by (1) a pendulum ram and by (2) a portable hydraulic pusher. Both methods are capable of providing sufficient force to effect wedge and socket separations on draglines with up to 78-yd3 buckets under normal conditions.

A comprehensive solution is offered to the problem of dust emissions at belt conveyor transfer points. Details of enclosure design are discussed and a straightforward procedure for calculating required dust control exhaust volume is presented. Many design variables are taken into account which heretofore have been commonly ignored or inadequately considered. These include belt widths, belt speeds. enclosure openings, material flow rate, material bulk densities, material lump sizes, height of material fall, material temperature, and ambient air temperature. All of these questions are handled by means of a "fill-in-the-blanks" type of calculation form, permitting quick, reliable solutions by relative "non-experts."

This paper discusses briefly the evaluation of chrysotile asbestos deposits in ultramafic rocks. Such deposits are limited to serpentinized peridotite and/or dunites. The purpose of any evaluation is to determine whether a deposit contains sufficient ore mineral to justify profitable exploitation. Dimensions of a mineral zone are established by conventional methods, such as mapping, ground magnetic surveys, diamond drilling or underground exploration. The value of the contained asbestos fibre Is dependent on numerous physical properties such as fibre length, strength, flexibility, as well as the actual amount of fibre present. The determination of grade is difficult. The Quebec Standard Test (Q.S.T.) is used to grade fibre according to the proportionate lengths of fibre present. A method of visual vein counting allows calculation of an approximate percent fibre together with a simulated Q.S.T. Various drilling methods are discussed, diamond drilling is favored. Bulk sampling is required to determine fibre quality. Correlation of visual techniques and laboratory methods are often difficult. Reasons for any variance are discussed. Underground bulk sampling of most potential ore zones is strongly recommended to confirm the viability of the property. Evaluation of slip fibre deposits requires greater reliance on laboratory testing as visual methods are difficult to apply. Cross fibre has greater inherent strength.

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) was designed and built at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in 1992 for use in Antarctica. The TBM system was tested at the South Pole where a 120-m long tunnel was bored to prove the concept. Modifications were made to the system resulting from this work. In 1999,boring of a 600-mutilidor began as part of the new South Pole Station. Tunneler hydraulics reliability problems prevented the completion of the tunnel before the end of the short construction season. This paper discusses the design and operation of the TBM, proposed solutions to the problems encountered, and current operations of the system.

The Rogan-Mallery tin property is in the foothills on the south slope of the Tehachapi Mountains, Kern County, Calif. It was first visited by the senior author in August 1942, and exploration by means of trenching and diamond drilling began in May 1944 and was concluded in August of the same year. Cassiterite, associated with iron-rich gossan, occurs in a limestone roof pendant at places near or at its contact with the underlying granitic rocks. The cassiterite grain sizes range from 20 mesh to 150 mesh. Surface and diamond-drill samples showed tin ranging from traces up to 122.6 pounds per ton. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines included 2,100 cubic yards of trenching and the drilling of 11 diamond drill holes totaling 1,000 feet. Dana Hogan, president of the Rogan Petroleum Co. of Los Angeles, Calif.) brought these projects to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, and the following month a Bureau engineer made a preliminary examination in company with Hillard Mallery, of 408 Ruby Street, Redondo Beach, Calif., the man who discovered them.

The Bureau of Mines studied two types of approved coal mine dust personal samplers to determine the effect of decreasing the amplitude of airflow velocity fluctuations on cyclone performance. Results indicate that more dust is collected when pulsation free flow is used. Velocity fluctuations were reduced by means of a pulsation damper; damper efficiency of about 85 percent was needed to reduce the fluctuations to an acceptable level. The data were obtained employing both pulsating and non-pulsating flow. A comparison was made of (1) the masses of respirable coal dust as determined by weighing and of (2) the particle size distributions as determined by an electronic counter. An empirical relationship is given between the ratio of masses collected using pulsating and nonpulsating flow (M') and the ratio of the maximum air velocity to the minimum air velocity (V') as measured in the cyclone entrance channel.

Why do we look for better reconciliation when times get tough? Why wait? Mine reconciliation should be a priority throughout the good times too. In fact, with good reconciliation, those good times are going to be even better and will help pave the way to success through those preventable bad times. Reconciliation throughout the entire mining value chain requires the capture, validation, and analysis of copious amounts of data. This task can be daunting for a team in a small mine, let alone reconciling across a suite of large mines. This paper will outline the different ways we can reconcile across the value chain, why we should reconcile over differing periods of time and how Snowden?s solution to proving reconciliation can be a simpler, reliable and transparent process. This study aims to investigate the reduction thermodynamics of ilmenite and pre-oxidized ilmenite, and reveals the isothermal reduction kinetics of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate by carbon monoxide. The results indicate that the ilmenite concentrate and pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate can be selectively reduced by controlling the temperature. The pre-oxidation process leads to the breakage of complex mineral structure, and the formation of porous simple oxides, which is an effective method to increase the reduction and leaching rate.

Cinnabar (HgS) and native mercury (Hg) are the most common naturally occurring forms of mercury found in most gold ores subsequently released into the environment during processing. Mercury and its compounds are extremely toxic and recognised as serious health and environmental hazards. This research investigates the possibility of mercury (Hg) removal from waste solutions from gold processing using iron-aluminium (Fe-Al) bimetallic particles. The synthesis of Fe-Al bimetallic particles using zero-valent aluminium and ferric chloride as precursors were performed following the optimisation of influencing factors. The presence of both metals in the prepared bimetals was confirmed by XRD analysis. The experiments for mercury removal by bimetals were designed using the central composite design and Minitab software based on two variables including contact time and adsorbent dosage. The best result of Hg(II) removal (>90%) was achieved using 4 g/L bimetals and contact time of 75 min. However, the statistical analysis of results indicated that these parameters have only a minor contribution to the removal of Hg(II) by Fe-Al bimetals. Higher bimetal dosage and contact time resulted in a higher Fe dissolution from the Al surface which can be attributed to the presence of nitrate (# $) ions in the solution. However, adding 0.1 M NaCl to the Hg solution had a positive impact on Hg removal by improving the conductivity and electron transfer within the solution. The Fe-Al bimetallic particles are promising substances for further testing of Hg removal from gold processing waste solutions with different conditions and constituents. (Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN connection with the work of testing structural materials for the use of the U. S. Government at the laboratories of the technologic branch of the U. S. Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., from September, 1904, to April, 1909, and since then at Pittsburg, Pa., large quantities of sand, gravel, and crushed stone have been needed from time to time, besides samples of building-stone, clays, and other quarry-products. In many instances it has been necessary to obtain single samples of sand, gravel, or crushed stone in lots of a car-load or more. For obvious reasons all these collections have had to be made by a representative of the Survey. As the work progressed it was found essential that numerous geologic data should be gathered regarding the materials collected, in order that they might be properly classified as to kind of material, source, geologic age, etc., and that they might be rated according to quantity available, accessibility to transportation facilities, approximate costs, suitability for special purposes, etc., and that notes might be taken regarding undeveloped deposits of possible value. Furthermore, it was desired that the selection of materials for tests should be made broadly, so as to cover, first, the representative types of material, and later, if possible, the typical materials of the more important building-centers in the United States. In order to insure a certain degree of uniformity in this work and economy of effort and expense, it was decided that as much of the sampling as was practicable should be done by a member of the. geologic branch, whose regular field-trips could be combined conveniently with those necessary for procuring materials for the laboratory. During parts of the last three years I have been engaged in field-work of this sort.

The attention of the world is being focused on the spectacular rise of elemental sulphur production in Alberta. In the short space of a decade, production has increased from less than 10,000 long tons, in 1952, to al-most 1,000,000 long tons in 1962. Moreover, 1963 sulphur production is expected to rise by 50 per cent to approximately 1,500,000 long tons, and further increases are forecast for ensuing years. The reason for this dramatic in-crease in elemental sulphur production, particularly in the last year or two, is that Alberta elemental sulphur is recovered in association with the production of sour natural gas. When very large volumes of natural gas began moving to U.S. markets in the latter part of 1961, the resultant increase in sour gas production led to a marked increase in the production of sulphur. Consequently, Canada, mainly on the strength of sulphur produced in Alberta, will soon become the second largest producer of sulphur in the Free World

PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper-gold mine operation located in West Papua, Indonesia about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Current ore production is about 270 000 tpd, of which 30 000 tpd comes from underground. In the future, the production from underground will be gradually increased to reach a maximum of 115 000 tpd, as the Grasberg open pit production decreases. The current and future challenge for PT Freeport Indonesia is to fill the quota of underground miners, as Indonesia does not have a long culture of underground work. At present, there are only three active underground mines in Indonesia. The lack of underground skilled labour incited the company to develop its own skilled workforce. In the mean time, to overcome the shortage of personnel, the underground management had to find a way to improve the productivity. Since 21 May 1998, PT Freeport Indonesia Underground Mine has operated with the new roster of two rotating shifts a day, 11 hours per shift. The previous schedule consisted of three nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week, for a total of 26 working days in a month. This change was intended to increase the productivity of the miners. With the previous roster, studies determined that the effective working time was only seven hours per shift. The new roster produces an improvement of effective working hours to about nine hours per shift. As a result, total production has increased by 33 per cent and the utilisation of production equipment has increased by 16.5 per cent. This paper describes the background of the decision to change the work schedule, the study carried out to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the new shift roster, the challenges, and then compares the results for various parameters between the old schedule and the new one.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

Renewal and revitalization of transportation presents a challenge in the need for replacement, repair, and improvements of existing bridges, as well as increased construction of transit systems within existing transportation rights of way. Difficulties with conventional deep foundation systems occur because of the limited site access, adjacent structures, the need to maintain traffic, and other constraints on construction activity. Major projects are often performed in a design-build contract environment in which the schedule is aggressive, and where speed and reliability represent major considerations. Foundation designers are confronted with a need to solve problems with a construction-oriented mindset, where typical experience with lowest cost solutions may not reflect the most effective approach. This presentation presents an overview of the challenges that may affect design and construction of deep foundations in this environment and the methods that have successfully been employed on several large transportation projects in the U.S.

This paper relates to the foundation of a steel structure located at the San Martin de la Vega (Madrid) amusement park. The structure has more than 100 supports with various loading conditions, including important horizontal and uplift forces. Additionally, the settlement tolerances are very strict. A massive gypsum formation with interbedded clay layers and random solution great voids at various levels constitute the soil. The foundation design has been conditioned large enough these difficulties (load conditions and soil problems). The piling machine used was powerful to drill through the soft rock (UCS up to 11Mpa). The integrity of each pile had to be guaranteed by continuous recording of drilling and concrete pouring parameters. In order to fulfil all those conditions, a STARSOL type-piling rig was used. More than 4500 meters of piles were performed. The diameters of the piles were 450 and 550-mm and their depths varies from 6 to 23 meters. All piles were reinforced over their full length.

In February 1995, Falconbridge Limited approved the construction of a nickel mining and milling facility on its Raglan property situated in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, Canada. The construction period successfully terminated with the commissioning and start-up of the plant and concentrator in early-December 1997. The estimated life of the project is 20 years with an annual mining rate of 800 000 tonnes of ore, producing 21 000 tonnes of nickel per year. This paper discusses the subject of æRemote Mining in the Canadian ArcticÆ as it applies to the Raglan mine process and people. During the feasibility stage of the project, many assumptions were made which influenced the design and operating parameters of the facilities and the equipment. Transportation, communication, remote logistics techniques and standard industry practices required to support a æfly-in/fly-outÆ operation were reviewed and either adopted or rejected for use at Raglan. These assumptions were æmade to fitÆ the uniqueness of our planned operation. It was also acknowledged that many of them would ultimately impact on the people required to staff the operation following construction. Therefore, their suitability and applicability were examined from an economic, operational and human perspective. In a continuing effort to improve the quality of life for Raglan employees, as well as the economics of our mine operations, these assumptions are under constant review and scrutiny. There is no doubt that experiences gained, and willingly shared by other North American arctic mining operations, proved invaluable and are a big reason for RaglanÆs overall success thus far. The mining industry is being challenged technically to develop lower grade orebodies at the lowest possible cost. In addition to environmental constraints, serious social, political and moral questions are being asked and added to this list of challenges. Miners throughout the world must improve their operating standards and public image if we want to attract the best possible employees. Remote mining operations provide a unique opportunity to experiment with various human resource concepts as well as demonstrate the industryÆs commitment to environmental and community concerns.

"This study was conducted to establish the possible application of bioleaching in the pilot scale to recover valuable metals from the sulfidic tailings of Golgohar Iron Mine (Kerman, Iran). Using bioleaching processes, solvent extraction and sulfide precipitation recovery of valuable metals including, copper, cobalt and nickel from the tailing was investigated. The results showed that the optimum pH and temperature conditions relative to the bioleaching step was 1.5 and 45°C. The extraction of the metals from the low grade polymetal resource with complex mineralogy is very important from economic, environmental and technical point of views. Moreover, the proposed method has some advantages from energy saving, tailing management and creating added value from waste materials aspects.INTRODUCTION The growing demand for base metals and strategic such as: copper, nickel and cobalt as well as high-grade resource depletion has caused them, the mining industry to extract metals from low-grade resources and driven by complex mineralogy (Xie et al., 2005). Economic extraction of metals with low grade sources requires low-cost and efficient processing methods. A source with enormous potential for metals in future, secondary sources, such as: tailings mineral industries which the lack of appropriate technology and the high cost of processing weren't recoverable with previous procedures in the past. But it is possible that with develop new and efficient technologies have the economic exploitation ability. Recovery of metals from tailings resources is very important not only in terms of precious metals but also in terms of reducing environmental problems (due to heavy metals). The metals of copper, nickel and cobalt are mainly like sulfide compounds in the nature, usually for their recovery, first they make ore with flotation method to obtain the sulfide concentrate that containing valuable metals. then for the metal production, it will be melt and purification. Due to the environmental aspects, technical problems in the recovery of base metals from low grade ore and mixes, the presence of small reserves, in the past three decades they pay much attention to the use of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of base metals from these resources. These processes are classified according to the solver agent to leaching sulfates, chlorides, nitrates and amines (Hackl, 1995). Early, chloride leaching under oxidation condition in acidic or alkaline solutions was recognized the best process to produce sulfide concentrates. But then the basic processes sulfates was considered as the superior process because of being easier, a better understanding of the chemistry of leaching and recovery of base metals, especially copper from the environment easier sulfate solution with an organic solvent extraction and electro winning. The bioleaching is shown its ability on a commercial scale of low-grade sulfide minerals and ore that because of environmental reasons, the possibility of melting is not possible to them. The existing industrial base factories are based on primarily on the bioleaching and pressure leaching and recovery of cathode copper sulfate solution by extraction with organic solvents (SX) and electrowinning (EW) (Wang, 2005). Preliminary analysis has shown that valuable elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt are in the float flotation unit. Hence the plan to extract these metals from the wet tailing stream has been done."
