Introduction A brief account of the East Malartic fire is essential if this paper is to serve the purpose implied by its title. The fire originated in the timbers of No. 4 shaft at the 10th, or 1,570-foot, level; this was the top or collar of the underground sinking operations. At the time, sinking was in progress and the shaft bottom was 242 feet below the 12th station horizon, or 618 feet 'below the l0th level. Above the l0th level, the shaft was not in use as the surface plant was not yet completed. The shaft crews descended from surface in No. 3 vertical shaft to the l0th level, where they transferred to No. 4 shaft, a distance of 1,450 feet. Of the sixteen shaftmen mucking at the shaft bottom, four were able to reach safety. One shaftman was overcome by fumes midway between the two shafts on the l0th level, while attempting his escape. The remaining eleven men climbed as far as the 11th station and there succumbed to carbon monoxide. No. 4 shaft, inclined at 61 degrees, bad been raised and timbered from the 10th level to surface; this bad been followed by sinking operations below the l0th. Two air hoists had been set up in the footwall of the shaft, 110 feet above the 10th level, and directly behind compartments No. 2 and No. 4. The waste from the shaft bottom was hoisted in 28-cubicfoot buckets on mono rails and dumped over standard shaft sinking doors into waste chutes built into No. 1 and No. 3 compartments. The five-compartment shaft, 7 ft. 8 in. by 34 ft. 6 in. overall size, was heavily timbered. In addition to the standard shaft timbers of 8 in. by 8 in. and 8 in. by 10 in. B.C. fir, the hanging-wall and ends of the shaft were laced with 4-inch spruce lagging. This represented approximately 300 board feet of timber in placee for every foot of shaft. The cause of the fire bas never been determined, despite every effort to do so. The inquest held for those who lost their lives in the fire was an extremely thorough one, but only the location of the origin, and not the cause, was established.

This circular presents the method of making tests and apparent results of comparing performance of tungsten carbide insert bits and steel detachable bits by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the company's mines on the Marquette iron range of Michigan. The mines are at Ishpeming and Negaunee, Mich., and include the Cliffs Chaft, Mather "A", Cambria-Jackson, and Mather "B". There are four general characteristic types of high-grade iron ore on the Marquette range. B. H. Boyum2/ classifies the Cliffs Shaft as "hard-ore" and the Cambria-Jackson and Mather "A" as "soft-ore" types of deposit. Shaft sinking through Jasper, slate, and graywacke was in progress at this writing at the Mather "B", with completion at 3,100-foot depth in August 1949. The many different kinds of rock and ore at the mines of the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. and the experimental work being carried on with carbide in- sert bits make it possible to compare, generally, the carbide insert and steel detachable bit. The type of "hard ore" at the Cliffs Shaft mine re- quired close study of the possible use of the insert tit, and their records are more complete than those of the "soft-ore" mines. History and development of tungsten carbide tips inserted in rock drill bits have been covered by R. W. Adamson, C. H. Vivian, R. C. Sullivan,5/ and others. Tungsten carbide insert rock bits have only recently been introduced to the domestic mining industry. Although unusual performance records are being reported at operations employing the insert bits, the general adaptability of the tool to all rock types and the advantages to be gained by using carbide insert tits remains to be demonstrated. Insert-bit performance is being observed at numerous mines and quarries throughout the United States The several mining operations at the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., is one site where exhaustive comparative tests of insert and conventional steel detachable bits are currently in progress. Results to date are sufficiently impressive to be of general interest to the mining

Numerous developments and improvements have been made to tap-hole designs. On the other hand, there are very specific designs in operation that have endured for many years without any modification. Nobody likes design changes because of risk - the risk of atypical wear, potential hazards, and costly repairs entailing enormous production losses. So the philosophy ‘never touch a running system’ is maintained, because among other things there is no efficient working monitoring technology for tap-holes. In the past few years a couple of new technical solutions have been investigated and developed. Not all theoretical solutions are possible in practice. However, metallurgists are inventive, and the last word regarding efficient working tap-hole monitoring technologies has not yet been spoken.

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. ABSTRACT A methodology based on a two-stage approach was developed for process technology selection. The first stage includes evaluation of available technologies, followed by shortlisting the best technologies based on mass and energy balance modelling, financial analysis, and risk analysis. The second stage involves detailed analysis using refined input data, mass and energy balance modelling, and capital and operating cost estimation, as well as a more detailed financial analysis. A case study covering the selection of ironmaking technologies for a company in the Russian Federation is presented to illustrate the critical elements of the methodology and the analysis process.

"The discovery of low-grade copper-silver mineralization near the town of Tipperary, Ireland, by Gortdrum Mines Limited was the result of reconnaissance geological and geochemical exploration followed by target delineation from induced polarization surveys.Initially, orientation studies at the Tynagh lead-zinc orebody showed that such deposits could be readily detected in stream sediments and soils using cold extraction analysis for total heavy metals. Numerous areas showing stratigraphical and structural similarities to Tynagh were then selected for reconnaissance geochemical prospecting.The Gortdrum deposit was detectable through the presence of anomalous metal values in stream sediments 3,000 feet downstream; soil sampling indicated an area of 2,000 by 700 feet containing 2 Yz to 20 times background cold-extractable metal values. Induced polarization surveys defined the dimensions and attitude of mineralization.Drilling to date has outlined (under 10 to 20 feet of till) low-grade copper-silver mineralization within Lower Carboniferous limestones and shales which have been faulted against Devonian sandstone. Mineralization ex-tends from surface to depths of 250 to 450 feet and consists of bornite-chalcocite-tetrahedrite and some chalcopy-rite in altered limestones and intrusive dikes.The deposit is geologically analogons to the Tynagh and Silvermines orebodies, but in contrast exhibits a predom-inant structural control. Provisionally, it is postulated that mid-Carboniferous folding and faulting produced the pre-mineralization high porosity via recrystallization, shearing and brecciation. Subsequently, hydrothermal solutions from the west, with a probable eommon origin to the volcanic dikes, were introduced along the fault planes. Although syngenetic causes cannot be exempted, the field relationships favour an epigenetic origin."

"In the Introduction the author briefly discusses the company history as it relates to the development of its contracts with the Japanese steel mills. The main part of the text describes how Coleman Collieries Limited approached the problem of mining coal profitably in thick, steeply inclined seams. For many years a basic room-andpillar system was worked by conventional methods. Main roadways were driven on strike across the mineable area. These roadways acted as haulage routes for coal, materials and men. Rooms were developed to the rise of the main haulage route by pairs of men using air-operated hand picks. As these rooms advanced the miners would lay and extend a sheetiron chute down which mined coal would gravitate to a controlled loading point, where it was loaded into trains of mine cars. Connecting roadways or ""OFFS"" were driven at predetermined intervals between adjacent rooms, forming pil1ars or blocks. Extraction of the blocks followed on a line conducive to good strata control some distance behind the developing rooms. A need for higher productivity, expansion of the operations and a scarcity of qualified miners resulted in the company deciding to mechanize its underground mines. Joy 6 CM continuous miners and 10 SC shuttle cars were selected as being machines that could reasonably negotiate the problems associated with the pitching seam. The equipment, nonetheless, has definite limitations and Coleman therefore developed a modified version of the room-and-pi11ar system such that the miners and cars could work on cross pitch. In the area described, main roadways were driven to the rise on an average gradient of 12 degrees. Panels, which consisted of two parallel roads with interconnecting cross-cuts, were then developed on strike to a boundary point. Blocks formed in the development of the panels were subsequently extracted on retreat. Problems associated with each phase of the operation are thoroughly discussed, together with roadway support methods and equipment used for the conveyance of coal and materials."

Friction stir processing (FSP) is used to produce wrought microstructures at the surface of sand-cast aerospace grade magnesium alloy ZE41A-T5. It is found that the microstructure is significantly refined in the stir zone and the flow arm. The stir zone is largely comprised of equiaxed magnesium grains of approximately 4.5 pm compared with about 50 µm in the base cast material. In the stir zone, however, abnormal growth of some grains is also observed. Vickers microindentation hardness tests indicated that the stir zone experiences some increases in hardness. Single surface passes with low distortion, lack of pores and cracks were successfully obtained indicating the great potential of the FSP technique for modifying, improving and repairing magnesium alloy castings. This will probably open new opportunities to apply magnesium alloys in aerospace industry.

Following a Major underground coal mine incident there followed a review of the role of mines rescue ? the Queensland Mines Rescue Brigade. It wasn?t until 2002 that the real change started to happen. The issue of geographical distance was addressed by mines rescue sub stations being located on the mines sites with parent rescue stations in a central location. The funding was by means of a levy on the mining industry with legislative standards and performance included. The previous Rescue Brigades were not well organised (central districts) and the application of recognised quality management practices within local management was lacking. The structure was based on other nations models and miners managing miners was an issue for the organisation. The reform was some what painful and the QMRS organisation will still evolve with continuous improvement. Queensland has the National Champion mines rescue team for the eighth year. QMRS is participating at the level in the industry of influencing emergency systems and training senior mine management in ?Emergency Mine Management? coaching the industry in emergency response systems. We have come a long way. We have had some success and there is always the challenge of setting the standards, those we should aspire to and the courage to influence the industry to higher goals of a safer future.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes State severance taxes imposed on minerals and mineral fuels, provides a hypothetical example of how a State severance tax affects selected components of a firm's income statement, and uses the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) to estimate the effect of assumed changes in State severance tax rates on copper recovery cost at given levels of potential copper availability. A reduction of the rates to zero or a doubling of them results in changes in costs that are of the same order of magnitude as the cost of transporting copper to the United States from major foreign producing countries.

"The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. Whereas traditional estimation techniques are interpolative, within the Witwatersrand the estimation is primarily extrapolative, with the majority of the data being sourced from the mined-out areas. "The commercial potential of a silica-kaolin deposit that occurs on the banks of and close to the Missinaibi River in the District of Cochrane, Ontario, is under evaluation by Algocen Mines Limited. The geological features of the deposit, as well as its probable origin, are described. Mineralogical analysis of the deposit samples indicates that the principal minerals are quartz and kaolinite clay; it is estimated that about 20 per cent of the deposit is kaolin clay. The impurity minerals present are: a slightly magnetic Fe-Ti oxide mineral, goethite, muscovite mica, tour-maline, staurolite, anatase and zircon. Laboratory research studies are in progress to develop and evaluate suit-able methods for the separation of silica sand from kaolin. Results to date indicate that good-quality silica sand with an Fe,03 content in the range of 0.012 to 0.025 per cent can be produced. It appears that the clay portion can also be beneficiated to yield products meeting commercial requirements. It has been possible to beneficiate a portion of theetlay to obtain the particle size distribution now specified by industry. However, research is continuing to develop suitable separation and beneficiation methods which can produce kaolin clay meeting all the commercial requirements."

"Pumping backfilling medium used to fill in holes and caverns in mines is challenging. The often viscous, high solids materials are extremely abrasive and can destroy pumping systems in a matter of days. While a number of options are available, using a progressing cavity pump can often be the best solution. High pressure and capacity capabilities, coupled with low wear rates, ensures reliable cost effective operation.Thickened slurry backfilling for underground/excavation mining applicationsVoids and caverns develop as a result of mining operations penetrating deep into the earth seeking natural resources. After extracting all the ore from a mine, operators need to fill in these voids to preserve the integrity of the mine structure. They do this by pumping in a backfill medium. Each mine uses a different mix of components for backfilling, depending upon the mine’s specific structural requirements and environmental concerns, particularly water requirements. Most backfill mixes contain cement, or another cement-like substance, that acts as a binder to hold the backfill medium together. This is combined with tailings (unused rocks and waste from processing and/or extraction), and may also include chemicals or other binders to increase the material’s strength.Backfill pumping challengesPumping the backfilling medium can be a significant undertaking. This process involves transporting very viscous and high solid materials; the mix may contain 60-80 percent solids. These backfill slurries are extremely abrasive and the viscous material can wreak havoc with pumping systems. The material’s paste-like consistency presents problems for standard centrifugal pumps often used in other mining applications.Added complexity is posed when trying to achieve the required pressure, which depends upon how far away the material has to be pumped. It is not difficult to meet the pressure requirements if mixing the backfill material close to the area to be filled. However, pumping from extreme distances can be problematic — a great deal of pressure is required to transport the material from the mixing area to a distant backfilling site. Ideally, operators should be as close as possible to where they are filling, so they can use a smaller pump with lower power requirements."

Vacutainers are employed by the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration for sampling mine air and other atmospheres containing fixed gases, low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, and products of combustion. Tests were conducted to study shelf life of evacuated samplers prior to sampling and also to check the stability of sampled gases prior to analysis. An unexplained phenomenon, slow accumulation of carbon monoxide in evacuated samplers, occurred after a few weeks' storage; levels were low but increased with time and could pose a problem for critical applications. Accordingly, attempts to halt CO release by additional means of treatment were made, and storage at low temperature was found to be effective.

AN unexpected and unprecedented demand for its products now challenges the petroleum industry. Between 1939 wand 1946, domestic oil demand increased nearly 45 per cent and in the first half of 1947 it was 10 per cent higher than in 1946. In 1939 the United States produced 1,264,962. 000 bbl of crude oil and indications are that about 1,860,000,000 bbl will be produced in 1947, a 47 per cent increase. Runs to stills are more than keeping pace with production. The crude capacity of 365 operating refineries is rated as 5,400.000 bbl daily and almost 100 per cent of this capacity was running crude oil in August 1947. The oil industry is cognizant of our need for a greater volume of petroleum products and is expending the huge stun of four billion dollars on exploration. production. transportation, refining. and marketing of petroleum. Of this amount about half will be spent on exploration and production. a billion on refining. and another billion on transportation and marketing facilities.

This is the 'first visit of, the Institute to this vicinity since 1904 although previously it held meetings there every six or, seven years. 'The eastern party assembled at Buffalo and sailed on the S. S. "Tionesta ". on Friday morning, Aug. 20, arriving at Houghton, Mich., Monday, Aug. 23. En route stops were made at Detroit, where sightseeing auto trips were taken, and at Mackinac Island, where a short stop permitted a visit to the picturesque and historic Fort Mackinac.

INTRODUCTION THE small domestic underfeed stoker as now designed is unusually sensitive to the coking and plastic properties of coals, and when the attempt is made to burn the high rank coking and caking coals of the Appalachian fields, serious trouble may occur. Part of the trouble may be caused by the ash content and clinkering characteristics of the particular coal in use, but more often it is the result of an excessive accumulation of coke in the form of "trees" or masses in the fuel bed. Often the zone of burning becomes so restricted that the fire goes out, and in extreme cases the fire may be lifted completely out of the fuel bed and away from the air ports. Even if the fire is preserved, excessive coking may cause response to subsequent heat demand to be slow and irregular. Coke trees seem to grow. most readily during periods of hold-fire operation, so that in order to preserve the fire in mild weather it is often necessary to set the timer for such a long operating period each hour that much unneeded and unwanted heat is developed, causing discomfort. During demand periods the fire may pick up so slowly that the intense burning which develops just before stoker cut-off causes a serious overshooting of the thermostat. Stoker coal performance tests which have been made in a number of laboratories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are one method of approach to the problem of selecting stoker coals. As yet these tests have not been standardized and they are expensive and time-consuming. The value of the results probably increases with the length of the test. Sherman and co-workers at Battelle Memorial Institute believe that even a one-week test is not too reliable a trial2 and it is quite likely that others will agree. A great advantage of such tests is that characteristics of coals, other than the tendency to form coke masses, may be evaluated from them. The selection of stoker coals would be greatly facilitated if there existed some simple measure of the tendency of a coal to form coke in a fuel bed. Although possessing all of the disadvantages of any small-scale laboratory test, the test for the free-swelling index of coal has been found useful for evaluating the probable effects of swelling properties upon combustion. 7 Ostborg, Limbacher and Sherman, have shown that the test can predict, roughly, the tendency of coke to accumulate in the fuel bed of a domestic stoker. They also gave instances of its value in predicting combustion behavior in some large installations. The use of the test for free-swelling index has become well established and has been adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials.8 When domestic stoker coal investigations began at the State Mine Experiment Station in the summer of 1944, it was decided
