"Modern day ore bodies are becoming increasingly harder, more abrasive and lower grade. The Mako deposit is located in Senegal and consists predominantly of primary mafic and felsic lithology that are both very competent and very abrasive ores (Axb < 30, BWi >20 and Ai >1.0). The deposit was initially discovery in 2010 and the Toro Gold management team fast tracked the Mako Project through development and into production to achieve its first gold pour in January 2018. The comminution circuit comprises primary crushing single stage SAG milling with recycle crusher (1oCR SS-SAC). The mill reached design throughput and grind size seven weeks after first ore. The Mako project marks another successful international application of single stage milling, which represents a simple and easy to operate comminution circuit for small-to-mid size projects with a low capital cost. This paper describes the ore interpretation, comminution modelling, grinding circuit selection and design, as well as an overview of the commissioning and ramp-up of the mill.INTRODUCTION The Mako Gold Project is operated by Toro Gold Ltd., which holds a 90% interest in the project. The project is located in south-eastern Senegal in the Kedougou region, close to the Gambia river and township of Mako. The Mako deposit lies in the “Kenieba Window” of eastern Senegal and western Mali, which hosts a number of gold mining operations and development projects. The Mako Gold Project has an estimated life of 8 years with overall recoverable gold estimated at 924 koz. The process plant is designed to treat 1.8Mt/a of ore and produce 128 – 143 koz of gold per annum. Lycopodium Minerals Pty Ltd (Lycopodium) was appointed to provide feasibility studies and EPCM services for the greenfield project. Forming part of consultancy services provided by Lycopodium, Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC), a subsidiary of Lycopodium, was involved in the design, commissioning, ramp up and ongoing post commissioning support of the comminution circuit."

Gamma ray, density, sonic and core logs obtained from two boreholes drilled over a longwall panel in Southwestern (SW) Pennsylvania were analyzed for formation boundaries, log-derived porosities and densities and for rock elastic properties from sonic transit times. Gamma ray (GR) and density logs (DL) were analyzed using univariate statistical techniques and fractal statistics for similarity and ordering of the log data in depth. A Fourier transformation with low-pass filter was used as a noise elimination (filtering) technique from the original logs. Filtered data was tested using basic univariate and fractal statistics, rescaled range (R/S) and power spectrum (PS) analysis to compare the information characteristics of the filtered logs with the original data. The randomness of log data in depth was analyzed for fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) or fractional Brownian motion (fBm) character. A new prediction technique using radial basis function (RBF) networks was developed to calculate shear and Young?s moduli of the formations when sonic logs are not available. For this approach, the filtered logs were used as input to an RBF based upon a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning. The network was trained and tested using rock elastic properties calculated from the sonic log of one of the boreholes. The network was used to predict the elastic and shear moduli of the coal-measure rocks over a longwall coal mine in SW Pennsylvania. This approach demonstrated that it could be used for prediction of elastic and shear moduli of coal-measure rocks with reasonable accuracy.

"Metallurgy at the Polaris Mine is approaching an impasse, with lead and zinc concentrate grades and recoveries approaching their theoretical maximums. In an effort to increase productivity, plant throughput and operating material costs became a major focus of milling personnel.one method of increasing plant throughput was to minimize flotation circuit upsets by; standardizing operating strategy, decreasing control action response time of operators, increasing training of operators, and providing a more available decision support system for operators.To achieve these goals, Polaris personnel decided to utilize expert system technology to develop a real-time process controller for the flotation circuit which would be capable of justifying its actions to operating personnel.This paper describes the procedures followed in constructing the first process controller in the mineral industry which is based on the principles of Artificial Intelligence.IntroductionThe Polaris Concentrator was constructed in 1980 on a barge in Trois Rivieres, Quebec and towed to its present location on Little Cornwallis Island, North West Territories, about 1450 kilometers from the North Pole. The plant presently treats about 2,800 MTPD of new feed with average feed grades of 3% Pb, 13% Zn and 5% Fe. Current production averages 36,000 tonnes of lead concentrate and 220,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate annually.In an effort to increase the efficiency of the concentrator, the decision was made to implement an innovative control system on the flotation circuit. This system would embody and utilize heuristics ""rules-of-thumb"" gained from operators to make on-line process decisions. It would also justify these decisions on a demand basis."

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at &#163;522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. An understanding of the origin of mineral deposits and their relationship to local and global geotectonics is essential if regional targets for mineral exploration are to be chosen. Volcanism, metamorphism and tectonism are especially significant for the origin and emplacement of mineral deposits, which, far from being fortuitous oddities of nature, occupy well defined positions within distinctive lithofacies. Thus, suggestions for mineral exploration targets can be made taking into consideration the position of &apos;fossil&apos; convergent and divergent plate tectonic boundaries to indicate areas of specific types of mineralisation. To be borne in mind, though, that level of exposure, time and location of magma generation are all additional and important controlling factors. To further understand the importance of the above parameters, one must refer to the concept of paired metamorphic belts (Miyashiro 1973) which develop during an orognic cycle. These belts are generally constructed in such a way that an ophiolite type complex with metamorphic grades related to high pressure and moderate temperature regimes is flanked by an area of calc-alkaline volcanism and granitic activity with metamorphic grades within a region of high temperature and low pressure. The former situation is usually the seat of primary magmatic mineralisation, whereas the latter contains base metal. Deposits of acid plutonic and volcanic association. As will be seen later, this particular metamorphic-volcano-orogenic situation is well developed in some parts of New Zealand. For the present purpose a distribution of potential ores as related to plate tectonic processes is given below:a) Divergent plate boundaries: primary magmatic Ni-Cu, Pt,Cr, PeS2 and Cu, Pb,Zn in hot brines-hydrothermal environments Mn deposits.b) Convergent plate boundaries: stratabound Cu-Fb-Zn-Ag of felsic volcanogenic association. Porphyry eu-Au of island arc type, porphyry Cu-Mo of continental type. Cu, Au, Y, Sn, Hg, Sb of vein type and replacement lode related to granitic activity.c) Au of hydrothermal vein association, related to late dynamo-metamorphic events. By virtue of ocean floor spreading, regions of divergent plate boundaries are eventually juxtaposed or welded n to areas where plate collisions occur. This is then followed by partial melting due to various causes, just above the descending plate; thus creating a zone of acid to intermediate magmatism. The final picture is that of an orogenic zone with the paired metamorphic belts outlined above.

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada&apos;s economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada&apos;s energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada&apos;s exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada&apos; s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

"Nitrogen compounds produced by cyanide destruction and/or blasting are often a cause of concern for environmental compliance and at times, for water re-use in metallurgical circuits. Natural attenuation in tailings ponds and wetlands is not always sufficient to ensure compliance and/or achievement of overall water management objectives. This paper provides a general overview of active treatment methods for nitrogen management followed by an investigation of selective adsorption combined with electro-oxidation as the potential treatment method for thiocyanate. Results from bench scale treatability study are presented. The concept of holistic assessment of nitrogen management at mine sites using Risk Adjusted Life Cycle Cost is introduced and discussed in the context of gold mining operations using sodium cyanide.INTRODUCTION Unlike metals, nitrogen compounds present in mine waters originate entirely from anthropogenic sources rather than mineral deposits. Table 1 summarizes the main sources of nitrogen compounds reporting to mine wastewater.The best management practice related to the use of ANFO involves minimizing contact between ANFO and water, control and monitoring of blasting to reduce the occurrence of misfires, and reducing the consumption of blasting reagents for a given ore body. The most common practice for the management of NaCN is the incorporation of cyanide destruction in the metallurgical flowsheet and the use of tailings impoundments and holding ponds for natural attenuation of cyanide destruction residues such as NH4-N and CNO. At most mine sites there is no active management of NO3-N and SCN in wastewater. While current practices have produced satisfactory results, new enhanced methods to manage nitrogen compounds at mines are needed due to: 1) Increased scrutiny over the adverse effects of nitrogen compounds released into the environment; 2) New effluent standards; and 3) The shift away from wet tailings towards dry stack systems resulting in diminished natural attenuation and dilution of nitrogen residues prior to effluent discharge or water re-use in mineral processing."

Mine planners frequently face the challenge of mitigating the impact of climatic events on mining operations, such as floods and droughts. Specific water management infrastructure can be implemented to meet operational requirements in response to these events. However, the effect of flood protection, for instance, may reduce the resilience of the site to drought. The probability and duration of unfavourable climate sequences significantly influences the net present value (NPV) of implementing specific water management infrastructure.Good life-of-mine planning will consider the incremental development of the project, and provide staged development plans. With the depletion of the mineral reserves that can be mined by surface mining, demand for highly productive and safe underground mines will increase. Underground drill and blast techniques continue to be refined but true æmass productionÆ is difficult to achieve. As is evidenced by the longwall mining of coal, alternative mining methods based on mechanised mining can meet the expectations but the issues of how to effectively cut strong rocks, how to define the orebody and how the mechanised miners can be automated and maintained all need to be addressed. CMTE is working in all of these areas. We believe that the oscillating disc cutter may provide the long sought-after breakthrough in mechanised rock cutting. Disc cutters are one of the most robust designs of cutting tool and the cutters attack the rock in a manner which effects direct tensile breakage. The internal cutter drive and the inertial damping mean that the already low cutter forces are not all transmitted back to the machine, making it possible to design lightweight, flexible mining systems. For orebody delineation drill monitoring, drillhole logging and geophysical imaging are key procedures being developed at CMTE. To automate mining machines, work is progressing well in the development of systems for autonomous vehicle navigation and mining robotics. A strategic contribution to maintenance issues is being made through the development of procedures for automatic analysis of used oils, monitoring the strength of mechanical structures, and operating point optimisation.

Transformational roasting involves the heating of a material along with specific additives to induce mineralogical changes in the starting material. By controlling the chemical composition, roasting atmosphere, temperature and time of reaction, the mineral transformations induced during roasting can be engineered to control the distribution of valuable, or harmful, metals and to produce new mineral assemblages that are more amenable to conventional methods of metals recovery or to environmentally safe disposal. To date, this type of process has only been applied to the recovery of a limited number of metals, but current research is looking to expand the application of these techniques to the recovery of metals from a wider range of materials. An introduction to these techniques is presented along with preliminary results from their application to metals recovery from zinc bearing wastes, such as zinc ferrite leach residues and carbon steel electric arc furnace dust.

During reconnaissance investigations of more than 300 stream areas in Idaho to determine the potential value of ilmenite in black - sand placer deposits 46 deposits were explored by churn drilling , trenching , test pitting , or shafting . The component mineral content and total black - sand content were determined for more than 8,690 reconnaissance and exploration samples . Data compiled during the investigation indicate a good potential for large , low- grade deposits containing ilmenite , monazite , columbite , euxenite , uranothorite , and other radioactive black minerals and accessory black - sand minerals . The data also indicate most deposits will be economic only if several component minerals can be recovered as coproducts .

Introduction and Summary The Northern Empire mine is a mile east of Beardmore, and 100 miles northeast of Port Arthur, district of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Production started in March, 1934, and terminated in September, 1941. During this period, the mill treated 425,866 tons of ore, from which 153,103 ounces of gold were recovered. The lowest level from which ore was mined was the 1900, but considerable drifting was performed on the 2075 level and 800 feet on the 2415, the deepest level. The following description of the geology of the mine is recorded by the senior author but is based on the observations and complementary mapping of both authors. The vein strikes about N.72°E. and has an average dip of 80°S. (Figure 1). In stoped sections, the quartz averaged about two feet wide. On the 1725 level it was drifted on continuously for more than 7,000 feet, but in the mine as a whole practically no commercial ore was found beyond points 1,400 feet west and 1,800 feet east of the shaft. Conspicuous wall-rock alteration extended throughout this section but not much beyond its limits. There was some splitting of the vein and widening of the alteration halo on the lower levels. The average general colour of the quartz changes with depth. It may be generalized, from top to bottom, as light grey to dark grey to brownish. The brownish quartz first appeared near the bottom of the ore.

Sydney Australia’s M5 East Motorway connects southwestern suburbs to the airport. Central to the project are twin 3.8 km roadway tunnels which are mostly driven through rock. In order to come up with the winning tender, the project team developed several unique approaches for tunnel excavation and support. The project’s flat roof with thin shotcrete lining, 20 m wide underground intersections, thixotropic-grout sheathed rockbolts and cablebolts, and new shotcrete testing methods all differ significantly from traditional concepts. This paper presents the design basis and construction methods used to achieve the 100-year design life required by the project’s owner.

As ligas de titânio ao Nióbio apresentam grande potencial de desenvolvimento graças a excelentes combinações de propriedades. O tratamento termomecânico a elas conferido é importante para atingir as propriedades desejadas. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da conformação mecânica nas propriedades da liga Ti42Nb forjada a frio com 80% de encruamento e seguido de envelhecimento. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, medidas de dureza, metalografia e microscopia das superfícies de fratura. Foi possível observar que a liga Ti42Nb apresentou maior dureza e consequentemente maior resistência após o envelhecimento.

"In 2012, Golder Construction Inc. was awarded a Design-Build contract for the design and construction of an extensive, deep ground improvement scheme to support up to 20 metres (66 ft) high Mechanically Stabilized Earth walls and bulk earthworks required for the development of the proposed Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility at Bish Cove, British Columbia (BC). Utilizing Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to construct barrettes consisting of overlapping rectangular panels of in-situ cement-treated soils, a deep mixing scheme, covering an area of approximately 12,900 m2 (15,430 yd2) and comprising some 1645 CSM panels to depths of up to 30.7 m (101 ft), was developed to provide the required static and seismic stability for the LNG structures, and meet the project-specific performance criteria.CSM panels were constructed through varying thicknesses and discontinuous layers of fine-grained, very soft to soft marine deposits, and loose to compact sands, with occasional interbeds of dense sands and gravels. Panel completion criteria was based on soil response factors, as measured by the CSM equipment, with the design requiring a typical embedment of about 2 m (7 ft) into dense silty sand to sand and gravel to provide the required bearing. A total volume of approximately 73,900 m3 (96,660 yd3) of soil was treated with cement to consistently yield average unconfined compressive strengths exceeding 2.5 MPa (363 psi).This paper outlines the challenges associated with the construction and quality control of this large deep mixing scheme in highly variable geotechnical conditions at a remote location with barge-only access, and limited communication facilities. Specifically the paper will discuss the logistical challenges faced and solutions adopted for the project; equipment redundancy requirements for a 24/7 operation; the impacts of wear and tear, as well as variability in subsurface conditions on productivity; quality control processes adopted for the project, including the value of provision of an on-site laboratory; and materials handling issues, and their impacts on mix design and quality control."

"The Upper Mannville unit commonly consists of interbedded marine and non-marine sands and shales, but in northwestern Alberta the unit consists of marine shales of the Spirit River Formation. A thick tongue of marine shale (Clearwater Formation) ex-tends eastward into the Athabasca area below sandy Grand Rapids beds. Correlation of Upper Mannville rocks to the southeast is difficult, but in the Cold Lake area a thick sandy depositional cycle (Mannville ""C"" of this paper) appears to be approximately correlative with the Clearwater Formation. In the Lloyd-minster region, tongues of marine sedimentary rock occur in the lower part of the Upper Mannville unit. Most of the Upper Mannville oil occurs in the Grand Rapids Formation at Wabasca, in the thick ""C"" unit and younger Mannville sands at Cold Lake, and in the Sparky and General Petroleums sands of the Lloydminster region (Figure 2).The Lower Mannville unit was deposited on an erosional surface of considerable relief that truncated the Jurassic and older strata of the Western Canada basin. Continental, probably fluviatile, sedimentation persisted over much of the Western Canada basin during deposition of the Lower Mannville unit, but an Arctic or Boreal sea lay over part of northern Alberta. At the end of the depositional episode, the sea transgressed southward and eastward (Figure 3) and re-worked the Bullhead and McMurray sands of northern Alberta into the glauconitic Bluesky and Wabiskaw sands. Topography on the sub-Cretaceous erosion-al surface had a considerable effect on the deposition of the Lower Mannville (Rudkin, 1965), and the highest hills on this surface were not completely on-lapped by Lower Mannville sediments (Figure 3). The coarser elastic material was derived both from a western Cordilleran region and from an eastern Canadian Shield region (Glaister, 1959, p. 620; Mellon, 1956)."

This paper presents the results of a vibration control project conducted in soft overburden at a surface coal mine located in the western United States. The study uses near-field blast vibration monitoring, analysis and modeling techniques developed in house. Accelerometer-equipped seismographs were utilized for near-field vibration monitoring and analysis. Vibration control was achieved through field data regression as well as vibration modeling using the multiple seed near-field blast vibration model (Yang and Scovira, 2007). The regression was conducted between peak particle vibration parameters and the minimum scaled distance per delay. From the regression analysis, the curves of upper bounds for peak particle vibration parameters and charge weight were developed. The dominant frequencies of the blast vibration were also addressed in this project. The regression curves and near-field vibration model guided the blast design to control blast vibration for maximizing the recovery of coal and maintaining mine productivity.
