Thiosulfate is a green gold leaching agent that shows great potential to replace the highly toxic cyanide. Ammonia is traditionally used as the copper ligand in thiosulfate solutions to reduce the reactivity of copper ions towards thiosulfate, but it is a toxic reagent. As a result, efforts to replace ammonia with another complexing agent have received increasing attention. In this study, a novel alternative to ammonia is proposed to explore the potential use of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system. Experimental parameters include temperature, initial pH, copper, malic acid, and thiosulfate concentration. The feasibility of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system was discussed using Eh–pH and species distribution diagrams. Themodynamics analysis indicates that the mechanism of gold leaching in copper-malic acid-thiosulfate solution is mainly catalyzed by the Cu2( Mal)2H-2 2−/Cu(S2O3)3 5− redox couple. The capability of gold leaching in this system for processing the refractory gold concentrate is comparable to that of cyanidation and the traditional copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leaching processes. Thiosulfate consumption is greatly reduced in the presence of malate due to its strong chelating effect on the copper ions. Moreover, the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system demonstrates a significant enhancement in leaching kinetics, making it a viable option for processing refractory gold concentrates.

EDWIN LUDLOW, the 41st President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, Long Island, N. Y., March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow, attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75: and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1881 he went to Mexico as one of the engineers on the Mexican Central Railroad, then building from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. The road being in financial difficulties he returned to the United, [states, and shortly thereafter was made superintendent of the Union Coal Co.'s collieries located in the western middle anthracite field, between Shamokin and Mt. Carmel. Ludlow and Arthur H. Storrs, then superintendent of the Neilson Shaft Colliery, in Shamokin, were known throughout that section as the baby superintendents, both under 25 years of age. Throughout the 1960's and 1970's world trade grew rapidly, reaching a peak of USS1.8 trillion in 1980. Since then the world recession of the early 1980's shrunk trade to about US$1.6 trillion. The reduced cash flow to developing economies made it difficult to service their huge international debts, Nowadays lenders are reluctant to grant Third World countries additional credit. The shortage of export financing, plus trade barriers set up by developed countries, is further inhibiting international trade. Therefore, countries are turning to new and creative alternatives to financing imports of consumer as well as of investment goods. Non-cash transactions, including different forms of countertrade, are rapidly growing alternatives to traditional trade financing patterns. In 1983 about 30% of international trade, or close to US$600 bill ion, were presumably done by non-cash transactions, up from barely 2% in 1976. By year 2000, half the world trade is likely to be conducted on basis of barter. As of mid-1984 some 88 nations used countertrade regularly and Governments of at least 15 Latin American countries had arranged or mandated commercial countertrade.

"Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP) started mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel on July 30, 2013, working slowly through a 15 ft (4.6 m) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall. Once through the headwall, the machine would move through roughly 400 lineal ft (122 m) of jet grout-improved soil at a rate slightly over 6 ft (1.8 m) per day. It was anticipated that once through the improved area, Bertha—the world’s largest tunnel boring machine—would move at a rate of 35 ft (10.7 m) per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 430 ft (131 m), averaging 4.73 ft (1.4 m) per day, and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling reached the 800 ft (244 m) mark and Bertha averaged 12 ft (3.7 m) per day, achieving as much as 42 ft (12.8 m) of progress on some days. However, on December 6, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt. Preliminary InvestigationInitial reports stated that an obstruction had stopped the machine in its tracks. Malcolm Drilling received an early morning call on Sunday, December 8, 2013, from STP to rapidly mobilize a Bauer BG-50 drill rig with crews to investigate what was hindering Bertha’s progress. Malcolm’s equipment and crews flew into action and were completely mobilized and operational by mid-week. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic head within the ground around the machine and allow STP personnel to inspect the cutter head from within the shaft for presence of obstructions. By the close of December 2013, the wells were installed and the dewatering system was fully commissioned. STP crews were then able to inspect the cutter head and found small fragments of a steel pipe wrapped around the outside of the shield. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 10 in (0.25 m) diameter monitoring well casing previously installed by WSDOT (Washington State Department of Transportation) to monitor groundwater conditions for the design and planning of this very project. After the steel was cut out of the head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to manage a slow crawl"

"During the last eight years there has been a noticeable increase in the use of permissible equipment in gassy and dusty coal mines. This trend has undoubtedly been toward greater safety in mining, but in spite of this all is not well ""along the front.""In many mines those in charge, either through ignorance or supposed economy, have neglected to install sufficient copper and maintain good bonding on the rails used for return circuits to have a safe working voltage for the permissible equipment which is intended to afford them safety.Low voltage, when properly analyzed, is not economy but frequently is an expensive oversight. Burned-out armatures, controllers, rheostats, and switches are costly in themselves to repair or replace, but the greatest cost in many instances is the loss of production resulting from idle and broken-down equipment.From a safety standpoint, excessive low voltage where permissible equipment is necessary is almost criminal negligence. A burn-out of any kind is liable to cause an arc that may burn its way through a casing wall and bring about a hazardous condition if gas or dust in explosive proportions should be present. Again, all wiring, both interior and exterior to the apparatus, is subject to the extra heating consequent upon low voltage. It should be remembered that if the voltage drops the current must increase a corresponding amount in order that the same work may be accomplished; and as the heating effect is as the square of the current, an enormous overheating of the electrical parts and wiring often takes place. This heating effect is especially detrimental to trailing cables used on portable equipment, because under the most favorable conditions the size of cable selected is only barely sufficient to do its work properly at a safe working temperature; therefore, when the extra current load is added because of poor voltage, overheating is sure to result, with consequent deterioration of the insulation, This effect greatly increases the liability of cable failures in service, and in turn adds to the hazards incident to the use of portable equipment of the permissible type involving the use of trailing cables.Some manufacturers have tried -to protect their equipment from low voltage, especially below a certain point, by -installing low-voltage relays which will trip when the voltage falls to a predetermined value. It is understood that some operators have hesitated or refused to install such low-voltage protection because they were aware that the voltage conditions were so poor that the equipment could not operate under the safe limits set. It is difficult to understand how any progressive company that is willing to go to the ex-pense of installing permissible equipment could be so shortsighted in this phase of common sense, safety, and economy."

This formal literature review identifies strengths and shortcomings of current literature related to mine rescue, self-rescue, and self-escape technology. Key concepts and factors that influence the decision making behind mine rescue and self-escape were identified. Historically, underground mining has been one of the most dangerous occupations due to the harsh nature of working environments. During the latter half of the twentieth century, and into the twenty-first century, mining fatalities have declined, yet large-scale mine emergencies persist. The emergence of new technologies, in combination with evidencebased mine emergency research, is resulting in new training methods, monitoring systems, and self-escape approaches being tried in operating mines. This review identifies areas in which substantial research is being conducted, such as the use of virtual reality and game-based training and areas that warrant further development such as the measurement and information gathering capabilities of unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, as well as emergency management and incident command systems. This paper summarizes the current underground mine rescue and self-escape landscape in the USA, including the breadth and depth of mine rescue and self-escape training and practices as evident in the literature.

Bangladesh, whose population probably passed 100 million by yearend, remained one of the poorest countries in the world, with a per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of $126.2 Its only economically significant mineral production was natural gas. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were also produced, generally for local consumption. These included cement, clays, nitrogenous fertilizers, limestone, salt, steel, and pilot plant production of ilmenite and rutile. Exploration for oil was a continuing quest, which was hindered by a lack of funding and a hesitancy on the part of foreign petroleum companies to make long-term or expensive exploration commitments. PODUCTION AND TRADE Production of natural gas continued to increase as more use was being made of the abundant gas reserves variously put at between 7 and 16 trillion cubic feet. The main consumers were nitrogenous fertilizer producers and electric powerplants, but other industries were converting to natural gas from imported coal or fuel oil wherever possible.

Hazelwood Power Mine is one of the largest open pit brown coal mines in Australia. The removal of overburden is the first step in coal winning operation. The primary aim of construction of overburden dump is to provide an effective stable working surface for stacker. The paper discusses site investigation techniques used to determine dump soil properties, stability analysis method using GALENA and GWEDGEM, results of stability analysis. The paper concludes with recommendation for a safe dumping strategy for level 2 stacker dumping.

Accurate prediction of the desulfurization behavior of steel is of great importance for process control during ladle metallurgical furnace (LMF) steel refining. A CFD model capable of simulating multiphase flow with bulk and free surface turbulence phenomena and desulfurization behavior in the gas-stirred ladle has been developed. The fluid flow behavior shows that slag and metal try to entrap each other, forming a two-phase mixing zone. The resulting substantial contact area between the two phases will provide very favorable kinetic conditions for chemical reactions. For reaction kinetics model, the reactions at the metal/slag bath interface as well as the entrapped droplet surface are included. Predicted results show that the sulfur content changing with time in the ladle agrees well with the industrial-scale experimental measurements.

THE present century has witnessed an amazing transformation in the uses of limestone. From being mainly a structural material, a role it has played since the beginning of civilization, it has become one of the in-dispensable raw materials for use in the great chemical and metallurgical industries that play such a vital part in the economic life of the nations today. Its uses have become so diversified and numerous that it enters, directly or indirectly, into nearly every phase of modern life. In this introductory paper it is proposed merely to outline the general usefulness of limestone and to point out some of its salient features, and to leave any detailed discussion of uses to the papers that follow. The term limestone as herein used embraces all kinds from the variety known as high-calcium limestone, which is composed almost entirely of calcite, to the dolomitic variety, composed largely or entirely of the mineral dolomite. Lime is simply calcined limestone and, in considering the uses of limestone, the uses of lime should also be included, particularly in view of the fact that, in many processes, it is possible to use limestone in either the raw or the calcined state.

An application to mine an ilmenite-rich sand deposit in Westland led to public concern about potential radioactive hazards should the ore be further processed to recover zircon or monazite. A review recommended that any material involved in the heavy mineral sand industry containing more than 0.05% thorium, uranium or their mixture should be considered a radioactive substance and, for mining purposes, a notifiable product. Safeguards for those occupationally exposed would operate via the Radiation Protection Regulations. The major safety requirement would be the minimisation of dust in certain operations.

In September, 1975, production was begun at the new milling facility of ASARCO Incorporated, the Young Mill. The mill is located adjacent to the Young Mine 35 km (22 miles) east of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Young Mill replaced the obsolete Mascot Mill which had been operating since 1913. The basic flow sheet of Mascot was retained for the construction of the Young Mill, with a 20% increase in capacity included in the design. The Young Mill is capable of processing 7710 - t/d (8500 stpd) of crude ore from three underground mines (Young, Immel and Coy) yielding 300 - t/d (330 stpd) of 63% zinc concentrate. The Young Mill is unique in that 92.5% of the ore milled is recovered as saleable products, including zinc concentrate, construction aggregate, sand and agricultural limestone. Processing at the Young Mill is divided into five basic stages: two-stage crushing, heavy media separation, grinding-flotation, concentrate filtering and drying, and limestone by-products recovery. The ore bodies are located in the Knox formation, which consists of primary dolomite, secondary dolomite and limestone with silicas in the form of chert and jasperoid. The zinc mineralization occurs as an exceptionally pure sphalerite. The ore contains an occasional abundance of pyrite and traces of fluorite and barite. TWO STAGE CRUSHING Ore enters the crushing section from two points. The Young Mine ore is hoisted into a 816 ton (900 st) bin which feeds a 1.52m (60 in) conveyor via a 1.52 m (60 in) vibrating feeder. The Immel ore is trucked 10 km (6 miles) by an independent contractor and weighed on automatic recording truck scales at the entrance to the property.

The purpose of this paper is to present the methods used in ground water control and the considerations that affected the development of these techniques. Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. This method is especially suitable for operation under severe winter conditions and has reduced the detrimental effects by a far greater extent than other methods of water control, Spring runoff is handled in open sumps, but all other water from four mines, with flows exceeding 16,000 g.p.m., is pumped all year 'round from about thirty-five wells. LAST YEAR (1934) saw the completion of a ten-year program of reconstruction and modernization of the world's largest lead- smelting plant, that of the ' Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary, at Port Pirie, South Australia, which has a capacity for smelting and refining 220,000 (short) tons of lead per year. It deals with the entire output of lead concentrates from the famous Broken Hill district in Australia, being owned .jointly by the three leading companies: North Broken Hill, Broken Hill South, and the Zinc Corporation. These companies, together with the Sulphide Corporation, are credited with a production of 198,000 tons of lead in 1934. When one says regarding any metallurgical plant that modernization is "completed" he should add "for the moment." Development in the art of metallurgy and in the equipment used never ceases; that which seems close to the last word today is likely to be obsolete in a few years even in a process so well standardized as smelting and refining lead. "In order to improve ball milling efficiency in pellet plants, Companhia Vale de Rio Doce (CVRD), experiments new technologies in Santa Luzia (M.G. – Brazil) research center facility. Pilot grinding tests have been conducted with small grinding media, size distributed from 5 to 12 mm (millpebs). Tests have been conducted on an ore from CVRD’s Usina 5 Nibrasco, in Vitória, Brazil. A sample of the regrind circuit feed was obtained and used in comparative grinding tests with two types of grinding charges: 100% balls and a blend of 70% balls and 30% millpebs by weight. According to the balls charge, the grinding media mixture has showed the following benefits: reduction of the power draw, increase of the mill capacity, reduction of the circulating load and a slight increase of the ore blaine. Following the results obtained, CVRD is going to further explore the regrinding potential of millpebs.INTRODUCTIONCompanhnia Vale de Rio Doce (CVRD) is the largest mining company in Brazil. The laboratory is equipped with a complete pilot plant with several mills and classifiers, enabling continuous grinding tests in grinding circuits of almost any capacity and characteristics.In January 2004, CVRD undertook to conduct pilot tests at CDM for evaluating the effect of small grinding media on ball milling efficiency. Generally speaking, it is not unusual for operators to add oversize grinding media in a conventional regrind mill. This fact originates mainly from prohibitive prices of grinding media below 25 mm due to a production capacity decrease of grinding media producers. The size of the grinding media is an important variable affecting ball milling efficiency. Use of oversize balls decreases the number of contact surface between which particles can be caught and broken."

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015.
