environmental and social/political changes the world is currently experiencing. Three of major challenges facing the mining industry today are: water scarcity, unpredictable weather conditions that generate a risk of tailings dam failures as well as the correlating social pressure and government regulations that prevent the development of new or expanded tailings dam projects. It is estimated the total number of active, inactive and closed storage facilities globally is over 8,500 containing over 217 km3 of tailings (46% are from copper mining)1 which at some point will need to be addressed. Technologically, there are several solutions for tailings management, including conventional ponds, thickened tails, paste backfill and filtered dry stack tailings. The use of pressure filters, for tailings dewatering is currently being evaluated and often selected as the preferred technology where dry stacking is the chosen solution for residue disposal. This is mainly due to the pressure filters ability and flexibility to address and achieve the current challenging aspects of tailings processing including: • Extremely high capacities of >80,000 dry tons/day • Lower ore grades which require finer grinding and result in a higher amount fine fractions and clay content • Residual moisture targets required for the geotechnical specifications for dry stacking

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.

This appendix documents the mathematical approach to deriving the components of change presented in this report. The formulation closely follows that contained in Chapter IV of the documentation for the BEA 1977 Input-Output Tables.' The basic elements for the calculations include the "use" matrix (U), the "make" matrix (M), and any of the ten columns of final demand (generically represented by the symbol y). The use matrix contains information about changes in the technological processes of production, while the make matrix describes the nature of secondary product production in each industry. We adhere to BEA conventions in maintaining careful distinctions between commodity output (c) and industry output (x). The industry-by-industry 1-0 tables supplied by NYU for use in this analysis are square matrices, with the number of commodities and the number of industries both equal to 85. The BLS table for 1982 (commodity by industry) was aggregated and adjusted to be consistent with the earlier tables. The three basic steps for estimating components of change proceed as follows for each column of final demand. 1) Calculate the actual change in output of each commodity for each of the four time periods: 1963-72, 1972-77, 1977-82, and 1963-82.

Micropiles are commonly utilized for applications other than foundation retrofit. In bridges, for example, micropiles can serve as the permanent foundation elements or can be used in temporary support applications. In this paper, a case study on the use of micropiles for the 18th Street Expressway Bridge rehabilitation/repair project in Kansas City, Kansas is presented. In the project, micropiles were utilized for support of six temporary jacking structures, which allowed the bridge to be lifted while repairs were completed. A group of six micropiles was required to support each jacking structure. The required compressive service load per micropile was approximately 300 kips (1300 kN) and the settlement of the micropiles under the service load was to be limited to 0.5 in. (12.7 mm). Two field compression tests were conducted as part of the project. The field load test data was integrated within a soil-structure interaction capacity approach in order to analyze and permit the shortening of the design bond length for the production micropiles.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate, improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Since wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that series of large-scale wood crib fire tests were needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.

Application of the carbonate leaching process to carno-tite ores has often been limited by the difficulty of obtaining simultaneous high recoveries of uranium and vanadium. The chemical aspects of this problem are discussed and the effect of prior roasting procedures on this discovery is described. IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un-roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence. These variables were examined systematically to elucidate roasting and carbonate leaching of carnotite ores and to establish a treatment yielding high recoveries of both uranium and vanadium. Tests were conducted on samples of four different Colorado Plateau ores, described in Table I. Roasting Procedure: The roasting tests were conducted in an electrically heated furnace in which the temperature was controlled to ±15°C. The ore (usually a 500-g charge) was ground to —100 mesh, mixed with the desired reagent, and spread in a silica tray to a bed depth of about 1/2 in. During the roast the charge was rabbled at intervals of 15 min. To provide free access of air the furnace was usually ventilated; however, in a few experiments a controlled atmosphere such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen was maintained above the charge. Leaching Procedure: The pulp, generally comprising 500 g of ore and a 2000-cc solution containing 80 g per liter of Na2CO8 and 20 g per liter of NaHCO3, was agitated in an autoclave at 120°C, under 30 psi 02. For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

The southeastern phosphate industry is investigated to determine its role in supplying the United States and world phosphate demand. The report shows that the southeastern (Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina) phosphate industry is the leading domestic and world producer of phosphate rock, The report emphasizes size and organization, production capacity, transportation, and marketing of the southeastern phosphate product, Factors affecting the supply- demand relationship of the southeastern phosphate industry and world phosphate production-consumption relationships are analyzed and related to the southeastern phosphate industry. Past trends are projected and the future role of the southeastern phosphate industry is analyzed to determine its ability to supply the United States and rest-of-the-world phosphate requirements in 1985 and 2000. The projections show that southeastern resources are ample to supply domestic and export requirements at the projected rates of consumption well beyond the year 2000.

"INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Therefore, the value of various ore block boundaries can be better analysed by objective assessment of ore loss and dilution for a given minimum mining selectivity (selective mining unit or SMU), even in narrow lodes.A case study of a narrow vein gold deposit, comparing the results from an OK model and a CS model shows that whilst both models show similar trends – waste, low-grade, and high-grade regions are the same in both cases – the simulation model can provide greater insight for optimal definition of the mineralisation boundary.CITATION:Haylett, M E, Weeks, A, Matthews, G D and Khosrowshahi, S, 2014. A study on the feasibility of mining the recently discovered Wallaby gold deposit is due for completion by mid-2000. Open pit mining is the favoured method. Determination of the impact of mining bench height on the recovery of ore, including the estimation of dilution and ore loss, is critical to the economics of the operation. Conditional simulation was used to derive a number of gold estimation scenarios within a typical volume of the deposit. These scenarios were interrogated for a selection of mining bench heights and ore block dimensions. The results were reported as a range of grade tonnage relationships and compared to the kriged resource model. This allowed the resource model to be calibrated to a specific mining bench height and ore block size. Once calibrated, more realistic dilution and ore loss values for a number of mining bench heights were calculated from the resource model. These values were then used to determine the economic sensitivity of particular mining methods. The spread of results from the simulations also provided an indication of the confidence in the kriged grade estimates for the different zones of mineralisation within the deposit and highlighted areas of any significant uncertainty.

"Most engineers are bright, hard-working, reliable, and prefer to avoid conflict. An engineering curriculum tends to self-select these characteristics. By most standards, you would expect workers exhibiting these traits to require minimal supervision. But is this true? Is this how most current engineering managers lead? Looking at some current theories on leadership combined with personal anecdotes, this presentation will look at some common misconceptions about leading engineers. INTRODUCTION Engineers are different. There, I said it. From cartoons to movies to television shows and more, there is a reason stereotypes of engineers resonate. Yes, you can find a lot individual variation among specific engineers that you may know, but they do not detract from some of the overarching commonalities that engineers are known for. CLASH OF CULTURES What distinguishes a professional? Raelin (1985), in his book Clash of Cultures, describes professionals as having superior intellectual training, maintaining their own standards of excellence, and being supported by associations that maintain the quality of the profession. Engineers obviously fit all three of these ideas: an engineering degree is still regarded as one of the most difficult to attain; we maintain our own standards both through peer-review and in academia through ABET accreditation; and through professional associations like SME to promote the discipline and foster technical growth. Six characteristics representing professional status are described by Raelin (1985, p. 9): Expertise—prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knowledge. Autonomy—the freedom to choose the means to solving a problem. Commitment—Primary interest is in pursuing the practice of one’s own chosen specialty. Identification—identifying with the profession and with fellow professionals, both through formal associations and through peers external to the organization. Ethics—providing service without concern for oneself or without becoming emotionally involved with the client. Standards—committed to help in policing the conduct of fellow professionals. Engineers are smart—in the vast majority of cases they are hired specifically for their expertise. At a typical mine the ventilation engineer knows more about mine ventilation than anyone else on site; the same is true for the rock mechanics engineer, the explosives engineer, the planning engineer who uses sophisticated computer software—each is the expert for their particular area at the mine, that is why they have that responsibility. This can present a dilemma for the manager for each (sometimes all) of these engineers. The manager needs to keep everyone on task and focused on the objectives of the organization. Because they have reached their position by following the norms and expectations of the organization, managers tend to have a certain amount of loyalty to that organization. Engineers, on the other hand, tend to have mixed loyalties, having as much loyalty and affinity for their profession as they do for the particular company they happen to be working for at any given time. This dynamic can often lead to power struggles between the managers, based on their positional authority in the organization, and the engineers, based on their specialized knowledge (Camm, 2013)."

"Industrial-grade limestone is found in both the Lower Silurian La Vieille Formation and Upper Silurian LaPlante Formation of the Chaleurs Group in northern New Brunswick. Currently, between 150 000 and 200 000 tonnes of limestone are produced per year from the proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation at the Sormany quarry of Elmtree Resources Ltd., located west of Bathurst.The proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation was deposited on the margins of tectonically uplifted Ordovician terranes. This facies comprises stromatoporoidal-algal bindstone intercalated with wackestone, packstone, and floatstone in variable proportions. The distal facies comprises calcareous shale and minor limestone deposited deeper offshore.Folding and faulting related to Middle Devonian Acadian tectonism have caused an increase in the apparent thickness of the limestone sequences, especially adjacent to the regional Rocky Brook-Millstream fault. Structural and stratigraphic observations indicate that some of the limestone bodies in the area have been tectonically displaced from their site of deposition.A variety of prospecting techniques was used to locate new limestone resources, including geological mapping, airborne and ground electromagnetic surveys, and satellite remote sensing. Clastic rock units above and below the LaPlante Formation have distinctive properties that help to trace the intervening limestone along strike. Because of water-saturated glacial cover, thick vegetation, and the small size of targets, airborne geophysical methods did not prove effective in delineating limestone beds, but aeromagnetic surveys helped map the underlying clastic unit. The remote-sensing data and especially high-resolution digital elevation models helped in identification of karst topography related to limestone."

Fourteen samples of pyrite-bearing Archean greenstone rock (d < 6.35 mm, 0.04% < St < 1.22%) were characterized (particle size, chemistry, mineralogy) and subjected to laboratory dissolution testing. The only sulfide and carbonate minerals identified were pyrite and siderite, respectively. Quartz, chlorite and sericite typically comprised 90 to 98 percent of the mineral content. For the first 60 weeks, seven samples with sulfur contents less than or equal to 0.16% produced drainage pH values exceeding 6.0. Over this period, six of the seven samples with sulfur contents greater than or equal to 0.20% produced drainage pH below 6.0, with minimum values ranging from 3.2 to 4.7. The seventh sample (0.72% S) had a siderite content of 18%. Small amounts of magnesium and, to a lesser degree, calcium carbonates present in the siderite apparently dissolved to neutralize acid and maintain drainage pH above 6.0. Sulfate release rates generally increased as sulfur content increased, and the rates of pyrite oxidation estimated for individual samples were roughly half to five times that reported in the literature for the abiotic oxidation of pyrite by oxygen. Observed neutralization potentials ranged from 0.2 to 2.0 g CaCO3/g rock.

The world production of lead has been growing continuously and reached over 7 million tonnes in 2005. At the same time, the structure of lead consumption has changed: the use of lead compounds to liquid fuel has been virtually terminated; the proportion of lead for manufacture of lead-acid batteries has been growing and reached 76.7% of the overall world production of this metal. This has taken place against the background of increasingly stringent environmental norms and environmental legislation. This is due to the lack of an alternative for lead in manufacture of local power sources. A solution to the problem of meeting the industrial demand for lead with simultaneous reduction in the primary lead production is in recycling. A large amount of batteries manufactured worldwide and their short life cycle, as well as the positive economics and a possibility to comply with the environmental requirements encourage the development of secondary lead production. Currently, over 60% of the world demand for lead is met due to recycling. The current situation with collection, transportation, storage and processing of spent lead-acid batteries has been analyzed in this paper. Examples are given to illustrate technological and equipment solutions and trends for improvement of secondary lead production discussed.

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. In the meantime the shorter Lötschberg Base Tunnel was open to traffic in 2007

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary tests on scheelite (tungsten) ores and tailings. These investigations were made to assist in establishing satisfactory treatment methods for small-scale concentrator operations, or to indicate a. method for conserving previously lost mineral values in old tailings, if possible. A discussion of test procedures is included, as it was felt that this would add to understanding the results reported under the several projects. The treatment of scheelite ores has become more or less standardized. Important differences occur in textures of ores from various mining districts. However, and this must be considered when planning ore-dressing operations. In most of the present investigations, only a limited amount of work was done, usually just enough to answer a specific question in regard to a particular ore or concerning local conditions. Two methods of treatment included gravity concentration, magnetic separation, and flotation.

A program has been conducted to determine the feasibility of providing a borehole liner for Kelly Bar drilled boreholes in Southern Florida. The concept was to drill the borehole with the Kelly Bar and with it still in the borehole insert a tube which would remain in the unstable ground after withdrawl of the bar. The tube then will provide an unobstructed borehole for the charging of explosives upon completion of the drilling the shot pattern.

The rate of dissolution of cementite was studied in three low-carbon materials: a zone-refined Fe-C alloy, an Fe-0.5pct Mn-C alloy, and a commercial low-carbon steel. The materials were spheroidized, ad then held isothermally at temperatures above the Al. The isothermal anneal was interrupted periodically by a water quench and the specimens were analyzed by quantitative metallography for the amount of aus-tenite formed during the anneal. The results of this study were compared with an analytical model for the process, which assumes that carbon diffusion in aus-tenite is the rate-controlling step for the cementite dissolution process. The correlation between the model and the experimental data is excellent for the zone-refined Fe-C alloys; however, the Fe-0.5 pct Mn-C alloys and the commercial steel deviate from the calculated model. This deviation is thought to be a result of manganese segregation between the carbide and the matrix. The rate of nucleation of austenite at carbide interfaces was reduced by the manganese addition and enhanced by the presence of ferrite-ferrite grain boundaries. PREVIOUS investigations of the nucleation and growth of austenite from ferrite-carbide aggregates are not entirely satisfying for at least one of several reasons. The most prevalent of these is a lack of quantitative data. Engineering studies have been run on many steels with little control over important parameters such as composition and initial aggregate structure. The data obtained are valid only for material with identical chemistry and thermal history. A more informative approach to the problem of aus-tenitization would be to determine the mechanism that controls the rate of solution of carbide in austenite and how it is modified by alloying elements. This information could then be used to calculate an austeniti-zation rate for any material, provided its composition and structure are known. The object of the present work is to establish the rate-controlling step for cementite dissolution in Fe-C austenite and to investigate the modification of this rate by small manganese additions. The composition and structure of the material used were carefully controlled and all measurements were designed to allow a quantitative analysis of the kinetic process that controls the austenitization rate. A MODEL FOR DISSOLUTION OF CEMENTITE Cementite dissolution has been analyzed mathematically by a model that approximates the material used in the experiments. This model postulates a regular ar-array of identical cementite spheroids with 4 C( diam, embedded in a grain boundary- free ferrite matrix. The analysis provides a detailed description of the dissolution of one carbide spheroid and a generalization of the solution by summation over all the carbides in the material. The carbides may be isolated by defining identical, space-filling cells of ferrite around them. If the cell dimensions are greater than the diameter of the austenite sphere resulting from complete dissolution of the carbide, and no interaction (through diffusion in ferrite) takes place between cells during the dissolution process, the model need concern only one cell, since the solution in each cell is identical. In the experimental material, the dimensions of the cell, the carbide, and the final austenite sphere are approximately 24, 4, and 8 p, respectively; use of the single cell is therefore justified. The experimental observations are made on the austenite nodules that form around each carbide during the dissolution process. The model concerns the growth of these austenite nodules. The attendant shrinking of the carbide can be obtained from the same analysis by an extension of the calculations. Several a priori assumptions are necessary to make the analysis of the growth problem tractable. They are: 1) carbon diffusion through the austenite nodule is the rate-controlling process; 2) local equilibrium exists at all interfaces, 3) the austenite nucleus that forms on each carbide instantaneously envelops the carbide; 4) during the austenite growth process, the diffusion flux of carbon in ferrite is insignificant; 5) a quasi-steady state exists in the austenite concentration field; that is, at any instant during the dissolution process, the austenite carbon concentration gradient closely approximates that for a steady-state solution; and 6) the effects of capillarity on the dissolution rate of the carbides can be neglected. The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0&#183;45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0&#183;12-0 &#183;14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2&apos; and No. 3&#183; lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two &quot;zinc lodes&quot;.The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the&apos; two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For &apos;example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob&apos;lems of abundance.
