When slope angles are designed during open pit optimization, there is a risk factor applied in steepening the slopes. The steepening of slope angles has implications for the safety and economics of the mining operation. The steeper the slope angles, the greater the probability of slope failure. Although a slope failure will result in added costs, the challenge is to compile an accurate cost-benefit exercise optimizing the economic benefits of the project without exposing mine workers and equipment to unacceptable risk of rockfalls. A balance between the safety of the operation and the economics of the investment is therefore required. The ideal situation is to have a slope monitoring system that will predict slope failure by detecting any ground movement before the actual failure occurs. This early warning will allow the risk factor to be applied with a high degree of confidence, knowing that the risk will be adequately mitigated. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines on how to design an optimal survey slope monitoring system. It is the authors? view that for a survey monitoring system to yield desirable results, it should adhere to survey principles such as working from the whole to part and consistently cross-checking. The case study used is Jwaneng Mine, and the design strategy outlined can be used as a guideline for developing a new slope monitoring system or to optimize an existing one.

The fundamental principles by which bismuth may be removed from lead by pyrometallurgical processes are enumerated. Qualitative discussion of the phase diagrams concerned is followed by presentation of quantitative diagrams. Brief mention is made of the practical aspects. Data presented show how chemical lead (<0.005 pct Bi) may be produced by the Jollivet, Dittmer, and Kroll-Betterton processes. BISMUTH is an element whose properties are very similar to those of lead, and its minerals are associated to a greater or lesser extent with nearly all the major lead ore deposits of the world. In consequence, the lead produced contains bismuth unless a special debismuthizing process is practiced. There does not appear to be any published comprehensive review of the effect of bismuth as an impurity on the properties of lead, and there is some uncertainty as to the beneficial or detrimental effects of small amounts of bismuth in lead used for particular applications. Standard specifications of most countries stipulate a maximum bismuth content of 0.005 pct for chemical lead. With one exception, this specification is met only by lead producers whose ores are relatively bismuth-free, or whose refineries are electrolytic. In lead for certain applications a higher bismuth content is preferred by some fabricators.&apos; In contrast to the refining for silver, copper, and antimony, the refining for bismuth does not usually result in a large overalil economic gain from the sale of byproduct. Thus, debismuthizing is customarily practiced only if market conditions demand a lead with a bismuth content lower than that produced by classical refining; i.e., softening, desilverizing, and zinc refining. Until this century, debismuthizing was carried out only a:; an incidental result of desilverizing, as later described. This century has seen the development of the Betts electrolytic process—the only successful one of many electrolytic processes proposed and patented —and a number of precipitation processes based on the pioneering work of Kroll,&apos; although only one of these, the Kroll-Better ton process,&apos; is in wide commercial use today. It is proposed in this paper to deal only with the pyrometallurgical processes, excluding those based on aqueous electrolysis. Historical Background Prior to 1833 silver (and incidentally bismuth) could not be removed from lead. To recover silver from rich bullion, the only course available to lead refineries was to cupel the bullion, forming a slag of litharge. The first slag tappings or skimmings, on reduction, yielded soft lead of very low silver and bismuth contents. Intermediate skimmings yielded a lead of somewhat higher silver and bismuth contents, which could if desired be recupelled. The last skimmings yielded a litharge very high in bismuth, which could by successive oxidation and reduction cycles be separated into high purity bismuth, and lead returns. This oxidation reduction process, with modern operating techniques, can still be used today to produce a portion of a lead refinery&apos;s output of very low bismuth content, as discussed later. In 1833 Pattinsone discovered that lead bullion could be purified of silver and bismuth by fractional crystallization, the primary lead crystals formed by partial freezing being purer than the melt. The field meetings of, the 1nstitute are cine of its pleasantest and most valuable features. As Dr. Raymond used to say, ((It is good for a mining engineer once in a while to see a mine" and these meetings bring back to the mines those who, through progress into higher executive positions, have come to visit them infrequently, at the same time that they give opportunity for the .younger men to see regions and mines aside from those in which they are then working. This, and the formal and&apos; informal interchange of information resulting,, is of the greatest professional value to all, while the meeting of old and making of new friends causes each meeting to be notable in turn. This year&apos;s meeting at Salt Lake City was one of the largest that has been held outside of. New York City; 470 members and guests registered while many more were present at the sessions without attending to this formality. &apos;

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. For many years large mining companies were able to finance nearly all of their capital requirements from internally generated funds. However, during the last decade, funds needed for capital expenditures, dividends, and scheduled debt retirement have grown faster than cash flow. As a result the minerals industry has had to rely increasingly on other sources of funds. Getting the capital for new mining projects is a challenge, particularly for smaller companies. New methods of financing and new variations to old methods have been developed and more are needed. Commercial banks are short-term lenders. By policy their loans are limited to low risk loans-those made solely on the borrower&apos;s general credit, and secured loans where cash flow is sufficient to provide repayment within a comparatively short term. To maintain liquidity, banks prefer to make loans of less than seven years&apos; term. If a longer loan is needed an insurance company or pension trust may take the long-term part.

Risk factors associated with the development of muscu­loskeletal discomfort and disorders during the operation of heavy mobile equipment include whole-body vibration and awkward and sustained joint postures of the shoulders, neck, and trunk. Cab design may influence awkward postures of the joints, and task duration may influence duration of exposure to awkward and static postures and whole-body vibration. To reduce exposure to risk factors related to the interface between cab design and task, it may be necessary for manufacturers to address cab design. This study assessed the repeatability of a cab design checklist developed to evaluate various design characteristics that can influence exposure to risk factors for musculoskeletal discomfort. The ability of the cab design checklist to identify posture-related deficiencies of design was also assessed. The checklist was used by two administrators across 10 pieces of heavy construction equipment. Video analysis was performed to quantify postures of the neck, shoulder, and trunk; correlation analysis was used to determine whether specific questions from the checklist were associated with the identification of awkward postures. The repeatability assessment resulted in kappa coefficients ranging from 0.52 to 1.0 (good-to-excellent reproducibility) across each piece of equipment, and an overall kappa coefficient of 0.77 (excellent reproducibility) when considering all equipment together. Results from the correlation analysis showed that shoulder flexion posture was correlated with scores from the cab design checklist. However, results of the cab design checklist were not significantly correlated with shoulder abduction or awkward postures of the neck and trunk. Results suggest that the cab design checklist may be useful for identifying cab design characteristics that need further improvement and for identifying design characteristics that increase shoulder flexion. The strength of the repeatability assessment suggests that outcomes of the cab design checklist administered by different individuals may be consistent, independent of the type of equipment being assessed.

Prospects a new energy saving method for an efficient destruction of the sturdy and hard materials (rocks, ores, frozen soils, concrete blocks, etc) û the Electric Pulse Discharge (EPD) method of materials destruction for green processing in mining and processing of mineral raw materials are considered.The EPD-technologies give additional possibilities for solving ecological problems at the expense of increase of integrated approach of utilisation of minerals and industrial wastes. The scientific and technical level of executed development of EPD method is sufficient for organisation of design work to develop substantially new equipment. A number of plants have been developed and tested, including plants for processing raw material with minerals of jewels, plants for selection of mica from rocks, and plants for processing the merging of artificial mica.

The inadequacy of our knowledge of the coal combustion process has long been recognized. This was expressed very well by Spicer and Finney (1). "The control of combustion processes in industry and the design of the equipment necessary for efficient burning to take place have always been very much branches of an industrial art rather than of an exact science. This has been especially true of the utilization of coal, a substance so hetrogeneous and complex in character that all too little is known about its chemical and physical composition.&apos; During the past several years one branch of coal utilization, that of high temperature carbonization; has made significant advances from being an art into being an exact science. This has been accomplished by the development of petrographic techniques for identifying, measuring, and determining the thermal properties of the organic materials which affect the carbonization of coal and the correlation of this information with a pre-existing standard of coke quality, the stability index.

The methane emission rate into an underground mine environment from overburden strata during longwall mining is impacted by reservoir and geomechanical characteristics of the coal measure rocks in the overlying strata, as well as the presence of any coal seam. The reservoir characteristics and how they change during mining potentially affect the performance of gob gas ventholes, which consequently impacts the efficiency of methane control in the mining environment. This study presents reservoir and elastic properties of coal measure rocks in the Lower Monongahela Group in Greene County, southwestern Pennsylvania, of the Northern Appalachian Basin. Since the source of methane in this region from underground mining is located between the Sewickley coal and the Pittsburgh coal, a specific emphasis was given to this interval. Core analyses were performed in the laboratory to determine rock porosity and permeability. Geophysical logging data (gamma, density, sonic) obtained from two exploration boreholes were used for evaluating formation boundaries, shale contents, log porosities, and geomechanical properties of formations. Permeability was also calculated using density-log data and empirical equations and compared with laboratory measurements and slug tests performed in isolated intervals of boreholes. The results presented in this study can be used as data sources for reservoir studies related to the production and control of methane.

McKinnons open pit gold mine, located within the Cobar Basin in New South Wales, is characterised by complex mineralisation controlled by the intersection of steep faults in the hinge zone of an anticline. Resource estimation using indicator variography and indicator kriging was based on RC drilling on 25 in sections together with grade control RC drilling on 12 in by 12 in and 6 m by 6 in patterns. Rigorous sampling and checking procedures were used to verify the reliability of the drill hole data. Blast hole data was used to assist grade control in defining ore block boundaries.

TBM (TBM) mining in urban areas particularly under low overburden is a big challenge to design and excavate. During excavation of the Lucknow Metro project, in Uttar Pradesh, India the metro authorities encountered a design stretch where the TBM had to cross a sewer canal crossing of 15 m length under overburden of less than 1 m. Not only the stability of TBM due to uplift was of concern but also the stability of both banks. Most structures on the canal banks were non-engineered structures whose stability due to vibration of TBM was also of concern. Due to these risks, a method was proposed that met stability requirements for both ground and superstructures. The design was practical and cost effective to construct, and a collaborative exercise between the client, contractor and designer that took approximately 18 months to implement.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a photoelectric concentrator apparatus which is capable of collecting incremental products from the discharge of wet concentrating tables. The instrument uses photoelectric cells as sensors to differentiate between two products which have differences in color or reflectivity. The photocells provide a signal that controls a mobile splitting device that separates the products. Tests conducted on a wet table demonstrated the ability of the apparatus to separate a product containing 81.5 percent pyrite from a lower-grade product containing only 68.8 percent pyrite. The photoelectric concentrator should have a broad application for collecting concentrates with visible color or reflectivity differences from wet concentrating tables.

Atlantic Richfield Company began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April, 1975 in Live Oak County, 10 miles southwest of the town of George West (Figure 1). The operation is designed to produce 250,000 pounds of U303 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Company, Dalco and U. S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural -- cattle ranching and farming -- but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well.

Computer simulation has become an everyday practice in thennodynamic and materials research. Advanced thennochemical algorithms take into account heat transfer effects and salient reaction kinetics when applied for process models. In particular, the combination of mass transfer or overall reaction rates with multi-component Gibbs energy minimisation provides an effective tool for simulation of industrial thennochemical processes and processing of materials. In this work the combination of rate factors with the Gibbs energy technique was studied by using the novel program ChemSheet, which operates through Microsoft&apos;s Excel® spreadsheets. Such processes as, for example, CVD of pure silicon production, titania pigment manufacturing, vapour pressure of Mercury in amalgams (in Hg-Iamp manufacturing) and melting behaviour of low-temperature alloys have been modelled. Provided that the thennochemical data is available simulations can be performed with any thennodynamic system. The calculation can be performed as an affinity study without a particular reactor model or with a specific reactor scheme.

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. Cement production in Australia approximates 6.5 million tonnes per year. Cement clinker is sourced from 15 plants which operate 28 kilns. Cement grinding is conducted at 14 of the clinker plants plus 7 grinding plants. Average annual capacity per kiln or plant is lower than in many overseas countries, but kilns introduced since 1970&apos;s have been of larger size more in keeping with size trends overseas, although still smaller than the large units overseas. Substantial economies in capital and labour costs can be achieved in large production units, particularly with dry process kilns using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. Precalcination techniques have been introduced to the Australian cement industry but as cement transport costs form a major part of supplying diverse market areas, the size of kilns is likely to remain less than maximum owing to balance with distribution costs. The cement industry uses significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy which can be minimised by proper selection of equipment and technology. Labour costs are also significant and can be contained by automation and computer control of the process.

Economically efficient mining processes can be significantly assisted by the implementation of sensor technologies for the detection of materials and boundary layers between materials inside the stratum. These sensors are meant to facilitate the machinery operator and illustrate furthermore the prerequisites in assisting tools towards fully automated mining equipment. Therefore, project æSensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the InterfacesÆ (SIMT) aims at the integration of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and geoelectric sensor technology by endowing with them a bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. For this reason, a sensor bucket was developed and tested in the Inden Mine of RWE Power AG. The feasibility of integration and deployment of such sensor technology has been proven effective for the conditions of open cast mining. The main focus of current research lies on developing algorithms to analyse the acquired measurement data from the sensors to automatically detect layers and materials. A computer network receives the GPR and geoelectric measurement data as well as the positioning data of the sensor bucket. The positioning data mainly consists of GPS and encoder information, which is merged with the sensor data by using the UTC time stamp. With the aid of consecutive processes the relevant information will be extracted and provided to the user. The aim of SIMT is to replace material identification, traditionally carried out by the operator, by implementing a continuous operating interpretation system in mining equipment based on GPR and geoelectric sensor technology, resulting in more detailed information regarding the working face during an excavation. This detailed information provides an opportunity for efficient planning and controlling of selective mining of natural deposits, such as the process of lignite mining.

This paper describes two independent building underpinning projects during the construction of the Los Angeles Metro Rail System. The first project involves pinpile underpinning of a building along the Red Line which is the main heavy-rail portion of the system. Vertical and inclined friction pinpiles were constructed, using drilling equipment in a low-overhead height space, to support underpinning grade beams. This underpinning permitted the demolition of the building caissons so that the subway tunnels could pass beneath the building unimpeded. One of the piles was statically tested in compression. The second project involves the use of traditional pit piers for the underpinning of historic buildings along the Pasadena Blue Line, which is one of the light-rail branches from the Red Line. The piers were designed for various loading conditions and to minimize differential settlement of adjacent foundations. The piers will be internally braced with steel struts to be designed by the contractor.
