"INTRODUCTION Preliminary tests of the Oyon coal constituted part of a wartime exploratory and development program in which many agencies participated. The general objective was to find new and adequate source of fuel and other raw materials for greatly expanded industry.The Oyon coal field, known for at least a hundred years to the mining people of Peru, offers a possible source of high-grade process fuel for the growing metallurgical industries of South America and the Pacific coast. Santolalla 4/ reports that low-volatile coal from this region was used in local smelting operations as early as 1850. It has been mined in very small quanti¬ties for many years and used in neighboring mining camps and villages. Small quantities are regularly used at Oroya for the manufacture of carbide, and in recent years small-scale coking operations in specially designed ovens in the region have demonstrated that these coals will make dense coke.During this long period of desultory operations many small openings have been made scattered over a wide area in this general region, indicating very extensive occurrence of the coal measures, although systematic exploration work has not been undertaken. However, current development work of the Banco Minero del Peru has opened up several substantially parallel highly inclined or vertical beds of workable thickness and has followed these deposits to sufficient lateral extent to prove fairly well the existence of substantial reserves on this property."

Water is the main medium for removing impurities from iron ore during wet processing to achieve a higher quality product. However, there is a substantial increase in freshwater consumption due to an increase in demand from the following two factors: in the past 55 years the world population has doubled from 3 to 7.5 billion and crude steel production has increased five times from approximately 350 to 1662 Mt/a (IISI, 2008). Furthermore, social development in developing countries exacerbates water consumption making freshwater an increasingly valuable resource with an average distribution of 70 per cent for agriculture, 20 per cent for industry and only ten per cent for domestic consumption (Hourtolle, 2005; OECD, 2009). Rapidly changing regulations over the access and preservation of water across the world indicates the growing importance of this issue, so the mining industry must adapt to this continual change and must be committed to increasing the efficiency of water usage.Tailings dams receive most of the water used by the process plant. In arid regions where evaporation is high and availability of water low or non-existent, technical solutions other than the conventional tailings dam, such as thickened and/or filtered tailings, exist to optimise the recovery of water and reduce the need for external water consumption. However, these solutions present additional challenges, such as energy consumption and transportation from the process plant to the ultimate storage area.This paper considers a range of alternatives covering thickening and filtering, transportation and storage, water return, closure and rehabilitation. Mining projects in the future will be more affected by the rising cost in water and tighter regulations in accessing water and energy. Good tailings management can contribute significantly to reducing the dependence on these two key commodities (water and electricity), improving the resilience of iron ore projects especially in arid regions and areas with high competition for water.CITATION:Vuillier, C and A Roshdieh, A, 2017. WHEN 60:40 brass is heated to 825° C., given a drastic quench to obtain the beta solid solution, and reheated, various changes take place in the structure. Reheating at 200° C. causes a fine, granular, sorbitic structure to appear which has been considered alpha solid solution. These particles coalesce at higher temperatures of reheating, and at 470° C., the alpha forms twins. A further study of these transformations was considered worth investigating. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The object of the experimental work was to study the effect of mechanical work on rolled 60:40 brass, quenched and reheated, and the mechanism of twinning in the alpha reeds of a furnace-cooled specimen. It was desired to determine the effect of mechanical work on the transformations taking place on reheating the quenched material, both at 200 and at 470° C. A study of the nature of the structure resulting from the breakdown of the beta at 200° C. and a study of the mechanism of twinning above 470° C. were considered problems for investigation. The question of the twinning of the alpha reeds was also an important phase of the work. With high-power magnifications, there was hope of following these processes.

The Bureau of Mines annually publishes statistical data reflecting technological trends in the minerals industry (metals and nonmetals except fuels). This report outlines recent developments and trends and the technology outlook for mining practices and metallurgical processing based on a review of the minerals industry during the past 2 years. A historical statistical series which indicates trends in the minerals industry has been extended with 1970 data. In addition, data are given from a 5-year Bureau of Mines cyclic canvass of froth flotation plants. Data for 1970 are compared with those of 1960 and 1965.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Chem. Eng.) This paper describes the development and use of a process simulator to optimize gypsum recovery at Afmine, a small plant near Yzerfontein on the South African West Coast. The simulator consisted of models of the major plant equipment, viz. hydrocyclones, surge bins, settling tanks, a primary sieve and a dewatering screen. Experimental data suggested that the equipment could be modelled satisfactorily from data published in the open literature. Simulation studies have indicated that gypsum losses on the plant could be reduced substantially by means of some relatively minor modifications to the plant layout. Moreover, sensitivity analyses of the plant have indicated that optimization of the settling tanks should receive priority over the other process units.

Several statements have been made to the Institute, somewhat detached from each other, as to the cost of some parts of these works, but they have not included any extended description of the buildings or machinery. The general plan of the work connected with the water supply differs, in some important details, from that which has been common either in the Pittsburgh district or elsewhere, and a somewhat extended description may be of interest to the Institute, in connection with a note of the cost of the work. The plan as a whole, and nearly all the important details, were developed by Mr. William P. Shinn, C.E., the general manager of the Company. The immediate and responsible charge of the work was in the hands of Mr. John C. Lewis, C.E., to whom had been committed all the work of this general description, including the laying out of the whole of the foundations, the erection of the buildings, and the grading and laying down of the entire railroad system. The continuous operation of the machinery and other fixtures of these waterworks, for more than three years, has fully demonstrated the correctness and econonly of the plan adopted. No casualties of any moment have befallen the apparatus, and no improvements have been suggested as important except that the gate at the river end of the conduit should have been made more completely water-tight, so that the whole length of the conduit could be pumped out dry without resort to any temporary dam in the conduit itself. In general terms the works of the Edgar Thomson Company are situated on a plateau, about 52 feet above the low-water level of the Monongahela River, and about 2000 feet from its bank. The site of the works is bordered on one side by Turtle Creek, a small stream which drains a considerable area of coal mining territory. This creek is about 100 feet from the group of buildings which have been erected, but it flows into the Monongahela River at a point, about 1200 feet further up than that selected for the entrance to the waterworks conduit. It was ascertained by analysis that the water in the creek contains an important percentage of sulphate of lime, while the water of the river is of unusual purity, in respect of any salts

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

"This paper was originally intended to be a presentation of a case study of two surface bituminouscoal mines in the southern Appalachian coal fields located within five miles of each other. These mines were nearly identical in every aspect from geologic setting to equipment application. Althoughrepresentatives from each mine desired to participate in the preparation of this paper through support in providing background information and in review and editing, it was later concluded that, due to the environmental sensitivity associated with each mine, it may not have been a good decision to present this case study in a public forum."

Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

The long-term production schedule of open pit mines that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a given project relies on the proper design of phases (pushbacks) within the ultimate pit limits. There is not a phase design algorithm applied in the mining industry today that gives yearly production schedules that are optimum.The majority of phase design algorithms currently in use by the mining industry aims at grouping the blocks that fall within the ultimate pit limits into phases such that the average value of the blocks within each phase decrease as the size of the phases increase. Current phase design methods are typically based on a pit limit optimisation algorithm, originally introduced by Lerchs and Grossmann (LG) in 1965. To obtain multiple pit shells to be used for the phase design, the LG pit limit algorithm successively applied to economic block models by changing the price of the commodity or some other factor that properly parameterises the size of the pit. These modified economic block models are developed by predetermining the destination for each block in the model based on a breakeven analysis and highest economic outcome between alternative destinations. Phase designs determined by these existing algorithms may be suboptimal if a given project utilises multiple processing facilities for metal recovery and particularly if these facilities have restrictions (constraints) that require blending of attributes in the feed. To overcome these problems in obtaining phases that optimise overall production schedules, a new algorithm is developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The algorithm determines the phases of an open pit mine by taking into account multiple process options for the blocks and period by period blending requirements. This algorithm has been implemented within a software program (the software) and is being prototyped successfully in the design of improved pushbacks at a copper mine in South America and on a gold mine in Nevada. This presentation will demonstrate the shortcomings of the traditional phase design methodologies based on comparison of results coming from the new approach versus the traditional.

The isotopic variations of lead from Mississippi Valley galenas have long been used to place constraints on the sources of the lead, and on the residence the of the lead in crustal reservoirs prior to its emplacement in the Mississippi Valley province. Similar studies based on strontium isotope variations in gangue minerals associated with the lead-zinc sulphides have been neglected until Haden's (1) study of such minerals from several localities in northwestern Ohio. His work revealed two things about the mineralization. Firstly, it shoved that the average isotope composition of lead from galenas from northwestern Ohio lies on the anamalous lead line characterizing Mississippi Valley-type leads, albeit at the least radiogenic end of the entire data array. This confirm earlier assignments of the Ohio mineralization as Mississippi Valley-type (Hey1 and others (2)). Secondly, Haden (I) showed that the strontium in the calcite, strontianite and fluorite is broadly similar in isotopic composition to the strontium in the host Silurian to Devonian marine carbonates within which these minerals arc emplaced. He concluded that the mineral strontium my have been very locally derived, from the carbonate hosts.

Despite the recovery of approximately six million ounces of alluvial gold from the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand during the last 140 years, a great deal of this having been obtained via sluice boxes and riffle tables, there has been little advance in riffle table technology during this period. In this paper contemporary riffle table design and current operational practices are examined. Studies of gold loss to undersize tailings are described. In addition recommendations derived from recent research carried out in North America are contrasted with gold saving strategies adopted by West Coast miners.

Depending on the product or the material grade, conventional deburring machines, such as e.g. with rotating hammers, are in many cases not capable to reliably or completely remove burrs from the edges of a continuously cast product. Burr, however, is generated at the front and/or tail ends of a slab, bloom or billet as a result from torch cutting. Likewise, traversal grinding of the slab’s rolling surfaces can also cause burr at the long side edges of the slab whereby such burr can even be more difficult to remove. Based on their experience and know-how with abrasive machining processes (abrasive cutting, high-pressure grinding) over a period of more than 50 years up to now, BRAUN has developed a highly flexible deburring grinding machine for applications which are too difficult for conventional deburring techniques. BRAUN’s deburring grinding machines were successfully introduced to the steel industry and have proven their worth under normal production conditions already. The subject paper describes the key features and advantages of BRAUN’s machine design and the operational results from the first already completed projects.

The hot blast system is key ancillary plant equipment with respect to safe and stable operations during a long blast furnace campaign. Hot blast stove designs have been optimized to such an extent that in some cases, their lifetimes have surpassed the campaign lengths of the associated blast furnaces by a substantial margin, with the exception of the burner and a few critical areas. This article presents recent developments with respect to designing, building new and operating existing hot blast systems for a long lifetime and at optimized performance. These developments include fundamental improvements such as dome combustion designs as well as increasingly comprehensive packages for inspection, assessment and maintenance techniques. Examples of such techniques are burner replacement with the hot blast system at operating temperature, improved double shell approaches and TOFD measurement applications.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. (SMMC) is currently developing the flowsheet to treat stockpiled limonite, a type of laterite ore, at Rio Tuba on southern Palawan Island, Philippines. The new plant will be commissioned at the end of 2004. Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) has been mining saprolite since 1977, and the limonite ore located above the saprolite ore body has been stockpiled separately according to nickel and magnesium content. Ore from these stockpiles will be blended and used for the operation. The annual production of nickel will be 10,000 metric tons for the next twenty years. The proposed process consists of ore preparation, high pressure acid leach (HPAL), counter- current decantation wash, impurity removal and sulfide precipitation. Precipitated mixed sulfide will be processed to electrolytic nickel by the Matte Chlorine Leach Electrowinning (MCLE) process at Niihama, Japan. SMMC has established new technologies during the process development, such as zinc removal and sulfide precipitation. Applying this technology, preferential removal of zinc can be achieved by hydrogen sulfide gas with negligible loss of nickel. Precipitation of nickel by hydrogen sulfide gas is carried out at low temperature. Slow kinetics is selected for control of the particle size of the precipitated mixed sulfide. The Directive 019 on mineral industry, which was officially adopted in 1989, is the main tool used by the Quebec Ministry of Environment for the environmental evaluation and control of mineral exploitation projects presented for approval. This document contain the environmental guidelines which must be met by all the mineral companies during and after exploitation. The Directive 019 also contain all the information required by the Quebec Ministry of Environment in order to fully analyse the environmental impacts caused by the mineral projects proposed to the Ministry for approval. The proposed modifications of the Directive 019 cover many new topics that were not addressed in prior editions, these include : water recirculation, groundwater protection, tailings management and post exploitation environmental controls.

Mr. Fulton was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 18, 1853, and at the age of 22 graduated from the Columbia School of Mines. His first job was as assayer for the Standard Smelting Co., Rapid City, S. D., but he soon left to become shift boss in the cyanide plant of the Peregrina Mining & Milling Co., Guanajuato, Mexico.
