The decision to develop an ore body can lead to multi-million dollar profits, or equally substantial losses. Accordingly, the effort required to adapt a valuation model to the specific proposal at hand, or even the development of a new model from basic principles, is clearly warranted. In the formulation of a model of this nature, one is faced with some major questions. For example, with the long term obligations that it implies, on what basis should a decision to initiate mining operations be made? Furthermore, how can the vagaries of inflation and the uncertainties that shroud the future be accommodated? Beyond the general principles by which mineral deposits are evaluated, specific cost behaviour is a function of the geology of the deposit, and of the mine design. Moreover, mine design, during the life of the mine, must be a continuing process somewhat akin to dynamic programming. An initial, apparently optimal, design is selected and mining commences. With production, a continual process of information updating leads to revisions. Thus if the maximum value is to be obtained, the mine design must be adjusted to conform to the changed conditions.

This circular presents the results of a survey of research on jet fuel thermal stability jointly sponsored by the National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA), Tulsa, Okla., and the Bureau of Mines. The development of supersonic planes has led to many problems that did not exist in the operation of subsonic aircraft. One of the most important of these is rapid deterioration of the fuel at the high temperatures to which it is subjected. At higher speeds, aerodynamic heating of the airframe imposes severe thermal problems, and conventional techniques of rejecting the heat to the atmosphere become impractical. The fuel is the only material present in sufficient bulk to be used as a heat sink. Thus, the fuel is subjected to aerodynamic heating and also is used to dissipate heat from lubricating oil, hydraulic fluid, electronic equipment, wheel wells, and cabin air. Consequently, the fuels may have to withstand both moderate temperatures for sustained periods in the fuel tanks and higher temperatures for brief periods during transfer from the tanks to the combustion chamber. Because of high temperatures, insoluble residue or gum may form in the fuel and contribute to heat exchanger fouling and to clogging of the fuel manifolds, nozzles, control systems, and other components of the fuel system.

"Ground freezing was successfully used to create an impermeable barrier wall along 3,000 feet of the downtown Seattle waterfront as part of the Seattle Seawall Replacement Project. This $360 million re-development involved removing the original 1930-era seawall and replacing it with a new, seismically resistant concrete wall supported on fill soil improved by jet-grout. The replacement wall was one of the largest construction projects in the state of Washington at the time. Ground freezing is typically used as both a structural shoring wall and groundwater cutoff. However, at this project it was used primarily as a cutoff wall to stop groundwater seepage into the 16-foot deep excavation from the landside areas.The project was divided into ten boxes (sections), each typically 200 to 600 feet in length. Only a few boxes were under construction at one time to reduce the impact on tourist-dependent local businesses. Soil conditions in the freeze zone consisted of sand, gravel and silt fill with abundant wood and debris. Tidally influenced groundwater, much of it contaminated, was difficult and expensive to control using wells during initial stages of construction. For all subsequent stages, a frozen soil wall extending to about 35 feet in depth was used to stop groundwater seepage into the excavation. An additional benefit of ground freezing included elimination of potential settlement beneath nearby buildings, utilities, and the Alaskan Way Viaduct that would likely have occurred with the use of conventional dewatering wells. The frozen soil wall crossed more than 130 buried utility locations (including water, sewer, storm, electrical, fiber optic, phone, gas, steam) with no damage. The frozen soil wall was very successful and limited groundwater influx from the landside to the seawall excavation to a negligible amount so that pumping, storage and treatment of contaminated groundwater was essentially eliminated."

The first commercial installation of the Dashaveyor has recently been completed at the White Pine Mine in Northern Michigan. After four years of development work, including prototype testing, and pilot plant operation, this new and unique system is being tested under operational conditions. Many of you may be familiar with the concept through numerous articles which have appeared in the technical press. But this discussion of the system will be simplified and less time consuming with the presentation of a portion of a film showing the Dashaveyor in actual operation. After the movie, I will show some slides which will supplement and clarify it and hopefully lay the basis for questions you will undoubtedly wish to ask.

It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

On April 5, the potlines at Consolidated Aluminum Corp.'s 35,000 ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter at Lake Charles, La., were frozen when natural gas lines were accidently cut by a dredge. Full production is expected to resume in 3 to 4 months. Three primary aluminum producers announced plans to restore much of the idled capacity in the Pacific Northwest as a result of a special power allocation by the Bonneville Power Administration. Reynolds Metals Co. planned to bring a total of 40,800 tons per year of capacity back onstream at Troutdale, Oreg., and Longview, Wash. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) will restart half of a 23,500 ton-per-year potline at Vancouver, Wash. Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. planned to restart a 27,500 ton-per-year potline at Mead, Wash., and to bring an additional 10,000 to 20,000 tons per year back onstream at Mead and Tacoma, Wash.

THE Company maintains a port agency at Antofagasta for dispatching copper and also for receiving from ocean vessels the vast variety of materials and supplies required at the plant. Copper shipments from the oxide plant refinery to Antofagasta amounted to 162,000 metric tons during 1951, while incoming freight totalled 175,000 metric tons. Electrolytic market copper in various shapes is currently loaded at the plant upon 20 or 30-ton cars of the meter-gage Antofagasta-Bolivia Railroad, to be transported a distance of 165 miles to the company's yard at Antofagasta. Here it is unloaded by cranes at the rate of about 175 tons per hr. Copper not scheduled for immediate shipment is stocked in tiers within the yard, but most of it is reloaded and sent to port works or a wharf serving lighters. Some of the vessels entering Antofagasta tie up at the port works, while others anchor inside the breakwater. In the latter case, all of the loading into the hatches is from 50-ton lighters towed to the vessel. When the vessel is at the dock, about half of the copper is loaded by port works cranes and the other half is loaded by ship's tackle from lighters. Fuel Oil Requirement Expands One of the innovations caused by the construction of the sulphide plant has been the necessity to provide facilities at Antofagasta for receiving and storing greater quantities of fuel oil than in recent years. From here it is loaded into tank cars for transportation to Chuquicamata. The older installation consisted of a 10-in. submarine pipe line, heating, and pumping facilities, a 67,500-bbl storage tank, and railroad loading rack, located at Antofagasta's northern limits. Two new tanks, of 80,000 and 30,000-bbl capacity respectively, have now been added and a second submarine pipe line will shortly be installed. Fuel oil requirements for the sulphide plant are estimated at 39,000 bbl per month, in addition to which 9000 bbl per month are required for the operation of the oxide plant. The company has a special lighter which is used by its diver for connecting the oil line with the oil tanker when disembarking oil, this lighter also being used for inspecting and overhauling buoys, as well as for recovery of bars of copper which are sometimes dropped into the bay when loading vessels during periods of rough weather. Transport of oil to Chuquicamata is by 76 tank cars of, 20-ton capacity and 20 of 30-ton capacity, all assigned to the company's fuel oil shipments excepting six for Diesel oil and one for gasoline. Incoming Freight Other freight received by the port agency has been averaging about 4800 metric tons per month of operating supplies for the oxide plant (renewals of equipment, spare parts, lubricating oils, and greases, etc.), some 1900 metric tons per month for the company stores, and about 6000 metric tons per month of materials and equipment for the construction of the sulphide plant. The greater part of these shipments (particularly the operating and construction supplies) originate from abroad, and must be handled through the Chilean Customs. Hence the company maintains a Customs storage warehouse (goods pending appraisal of Customs duties) in addition to its other storage facilities at Antofagasta. Not the least of the Port Agency's duties is to meet air and steamer passengers en route to Chuquicamata and to arrange for their trips up the hill. Landing in a strange country with a strange language, the first impressions of a new employee might otherwise be indeed confusing when facing Antofagasta's unique setting of brown barren hills.

A pilot plant for treating mine drainage by neutralization with limestone was designed, fabricated, and operated by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of (1) producing a very fine (minus 400-mesh) limestone slurry, (2) mixing the slurry with the mine water, (3) aerating the resulting mixture to remove carbon dioxide and precipitate iron, and (4) separating the solids from the liquid by sedimentation. A mine discharge of pH 2.8, containing 1,700 ppm total acidity, 36 ppm ferrous iron, and 360 ppm total iron, was treated at rates from 300 to 400 gpm. The treated water ultimately reached a pH of 7.4 and contained no detectable iron. The resulting sludge compacted to approximately one-third the volume of sludge from mine water neutralized with lime. The advantages of the limestone process, compared with the conventional lime process are as follows: Widespread distribution and lower cost of run-of-mine, indigenous limestone; simplicity of plant design; reduced hazards and plant operating and maintenance costs accruing from the use of a less reactive chemical agent; higher solids concentration of the precipitated sludge; and no deleterious effect caused by accidental overtreatment. While total process costs could not be determined, it is conservatively estimated that the cost of treating mine water by the limestone process is one-third to one-half the cost of the lime process, depending on the characteristics of the water to be treated and the availability and quality of limestone used.

The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

The prevention of accidents is considered a necessity at all branches and divisions of the Phelps Dodge Corporation copper-producing operations, and since there is a continual exchange of data on safety accomplishments between the various units, their safety programs are fundamentally similar. Variations in accident-prevention methods result from a difference in emphasis rather than from a difference in the elements themselves. The main copper-producing operations of the corporation ore conducted in Arizona and distributed as follows: Copper Queen Branch, mines division, Fisbee, and smelter division, Douglas, Aria.; Morenci Branch, mines division, Morenci, and smelter division, Clifton, Ariz.; New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz.; and United Verde Branch, mines division, Jerome, and smelter division, Clarkdale Ariz. As it is not feasible to describe here the safety programs of all branches and divisions, the program at the Clarkdale smelter has been selected for discussion. The United Verde Brach includes the mine and smelter purchased by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in February 1935 from the United Verde Copper Co. The mine at Jerome and the reduction works at Clarkdale are designated, respectively, as the mine and smelter divisions.

During the measurement of contact angle, a misty band was observed near the substrate. Hsien-Nan Ho and Shinn-Tyan Wu thought this was because the oxygen atoms on the interface migrate to the droplet surface to form an oxide band near the substrate. But from our experiments misty band appeared before the drop reach to the substrate. Theoretically speaking, the oxygen partial was the same everywhere in the vacuum furnace. So there was no condition to provide enough oxygen forming oxide. This appearance would be explained more reasonably with the optics principle. Most reflected light would be absorbed by the substrate and the light cannot reach the observation area, so the misty band formed.

The ability to predict the performance of an explosive relies upon having a Reaction Rate Law and knowing its functional dependence upon various parameters of the explosive. In particular, emulsion explosives have a matrix cell size and may be sensitized with glass or plastic microballoons. The cell size dependence should. be very nearly the spherical grain burning dependence upon web that appears in the reaction rate laws for ball gun powder. The dependence of the reaction rate law upon the parameters of the sensitizing microballoons has been explored using hydrocode analysis of the pressure field produced by the collapse of a microballoon. This pressure field provides an increase in pressure in the vicinity of the microballoon which, in turn, increases the rate of reaction within this field and provides the energy release that must be achieved in order to have a steady state detonation for use as a blasting agent. Hydrocode analysis allows the determination of an approximate functional form for the reaction rate law which shows the dependence upon the size, type, and quantity of microballoons. This presentation includes the theoretical background and the determined functional form of the reaction rate law.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. In this paper, we present a physiographic classification of gravel deposits, identify some field measures of aggregate quality, and describe sampling strategies for mapping aggregate quality in the Front Range Urban Corridor of Colorado. Gravel occurs in four types of deposits along the Front Range of Colorado: (1) piedmont alluvial fans, (2) high dissected terraces, (3) high (continuous) terraces, and (4) floodplains and low terraces. The four deposit types are the basis for definition of gravel-deposit models, which differ in geologic environment, deposit characteristics, deposit size, environmental impacts of mining, and post-mining use. Of the four types, floodplains and low-terrace deposits have been exploited most for gravel. High terraces also have been mined. Deposits of high dissected terraces and dissected alluvial fans have produced minor amounts of gravel, mostly for use as local fill. Studies to identify useful field measures of aggregate quality and to determine the appropriate scale for sampling were conducted on gravel deposits beneath the flood-plain and low terraces of the South Platte River north of Denver and the Cache la Poudre River between Ft. Collins and Greeley. Gravel deposits of the South Platte were selected for study because they represent the last major resource of gravel for aggregate in the Denver metropolitan area. The Cache la Poudre valley is the primary source of gravel aggregate for rapidly urbanizing areas around Ft. Collins and Greeley. Of all the field measures of gravel quality, the most important is particle size. Various parameters that measure particle size were investigated, but the easiest to determine, and the most useful to the aggregate industry, are measures of the proportion of coarse sizes. Particle size varies widely in gravels of the urban corridor. Gravel lithology, particularly the presence of deleterious particles such as reactive volcanic rocks and decomposed rocks, must be determined to assess aggregate quality. Studies of South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels have not revealed large proportions of deleterious lithologies. Studies of particle shape revealed only small numbers of physically weak shapes in both the South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels. Particle shape does not appear to vary from place to place in the gravels. Rounding, or the ab¬sence of angular corners, may play a role in the tendency of loose gravel to yield under load. South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels are rounded, and rounding tends to increase upstream. Before the quality of gravel in a valley can be assessed, the stratigraphy of the gravel must be known because it affects sample design. If only a single gravel layer is to be studied, only the thickness of the gravel must be known before sampling. If, however, more than one layer of gravel-distinguished by particle size, sorting, or lithology-is present, sampling must take into account the thickness and distribution of each layer. For example, three gravel layers of different particle size underlie the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte. The tributary Cache la Poudre, on the other hand, contains gravel layers that can be distinguished only locally and vary slightly in particle size. Sampling experiments were conducted on gravel bars in the South Platte River and in gravel pits on the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers. Experimental results indicate that, even where sample error is large, regional and stratigraphic variation may be measured if it is large relative to sample error. Using vertical trench samples weighing an average of 40-90 pounds, down-stream decrease in coarse particle size was mapped for Cache la Poudre gravel, and differences among superposed gravel beds were measured for South Platte gravel.

This paper discusses the evolution of a modeling methodology for explaining price behavior in the aluminum industry. Three generations are described, each utilizing as a foundation a microeconomic stages-of-processing approach. The second generation represents an improvement over the initial version, by incorporating more rigorous specifications of energy cost, and market strength (demand-supply balance) as well as endogenous treatment of market strength. International linkages across prices, costs, and markets, are the major extensions in the third generation. The discussion covers theoretical considerations, data problems and limitations, and model specifications. Simulation and forecasting properties of the models are also addressed.

SALA MAGNETICS, INC. is now operating a 15 tph continuous high gradient magnetic separator, the SALA-HGMS® Mark III Carousel, as part of a complete mineral processing pilot plant installed at Sala's Cambridge headquarters. The Mark III can generate a maximum magnetic field of 18 kG making it possible to process even weakly magnetic, finely ground ores and ore tailings on a continuous basis at the performance level achieved in Sala's cyclic high gradient magnetic separators. Test results on iron ores, clay, and decoppering of molybdenum concentrate will be discussed. Bench scale tests have been performed on all of these materials using the SALA-HGMS® Model 10-15-20 Cyclic Magnetic Separator. A direct correlation may be made between cyclic and carousel results. Sala's Mark III Carousel high gradient magnetic separator is designed to permit scale-up to machines capable of processing two hundred (200) tons of ore per hour and more.

After the recent increase in catastrophic failures of tailings dams such as the Burmadinho, Brazil failure in 2019, the mining industry has actively engaged in the stabilisation of tailings dams. Most of the tailings storage facility (TSF) guidelines suggest a laborious action that can be facilitated through imaging by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Although UAVs are not unknown to most mining operations, automated rill detection through aerial image processing is a new concept. This study utilises images from sites in the U.S. and employs semantic segmentation with a UNet architecture to detect location and size of these rills. The developed model can be used as a tool for monitoring surface erosion of TSFs.
