"When selecting an impact hammer to drive a particular pile, the decision is often based on local experience. In those cases, the contractor falls back on previous experience or draws on the experience of the hammer manufacturer to select the hammer that will be able to do the job. Obviously, a more scientific approach would be to perform a pile driving simulation using one of several commercially available software packages (e.g., GRLWEAP, AllWavePDP or PDPWave).However, this type of analysis requires quite a bit more effort. First, an accurate model of the pile driving process has to be developed, which includes a model of the soil profile at the job site and input into the analysis program. Then, the model must be analyzed to assess whether the combination of hammer, pile and soil model work.Over the years, numerous individuals and organizations have tried to develop something that would fit nicely in between these approaches: something more advanced than a gut feeling yet something that could be done on the back of an envelope; in other words, a “Goldilocks” approach — not too simple, not too complex, but just right.Screening Tool CriteriaThe goals of the approach are twofold: (1) select the appropriate impact hammer to drive an open toe steel pipe or H-pile, and (2) then use the model for the subsequent high strain dynamic testing (HSDT). The Goldilocks approach centers around five different criteria.1. Maximum Driving StressTo minimize the risk of damage, the maximum driving stresses are generally limited to 80 to 90% of the yield stress (fy) of the steel section. This approach does not consider issues such as hammer alignment, initial imperfections, denting and/or elastic buckling, and pile material fatigue history. However, even when these issues are not applicable, limiting average stresses to 0.9fy or even 0.8fy does not necessarily mitigate the risk of pile damage (Mostafa, 2011)."

Ban Houayxai is a gold-silver mine operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited in Laos since 2012. The first two years of operation processed predominately soft oxidised ore but subsequent years were expected to process more fresh hard ore. Fragmentation of the fresh primary ores was also expected to be much coarser than for the soft oxide ores. This coarser and harder ore is expected to significantly reduce mill throughput and mining productivity. The Ban Houayxai management realised the potential downside risk when processing fresh harder ores and implemented a blast optimisation project to deliver finer fresh ore to the mill without unduly increasing blast induced dilution and damage.JKTech and the Ban Houayxai drill and blast team began a joint blast optimisation project in April 2013 to achieve finer fragmentation from fresh ores. This was achieved by modifying the bench geometry, blast patterns and applying exceptionally high levels of quality control during implementation. Blast induced ore loss and dilution was controlled by adjusting the ore blocks for blast movement. Finer fragmentation from these modified designs improved mill throughput for the hard fresh ore by 46 per cent above design on average. ABSTRACT: One alternative to close a radioactive waste repository in rock salt is the construction of a “Cross Section Closure (CSC)“ sealing barrier. The proposed material for the CSC is highly compacted bentonite. To investigate the swelling behaviour of a highly compacted bentonite a large number of laboratory tests were performed. In addition, large scale model test were carried out to demonstrate the development of a nearly homogeneous and isotropic swelling pressure. The results of the large scale model tests were interpreted numerically based on the models for stress-strain behaviour and water uptake which are implemented in the finite element codes FEST03 and HYDOPO. The investigations show a good agreement of the results of the model tests and the corresponding analyses and show, that the theoretical models are capable of describing the behaviour of sealing structures based on highly compacted bentonite. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Eine Möglichkeit für den Verschluß eines Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle im Steinsalz ist die Konstruktion einer Querschnittsabdichtung aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit. Zur Untersuchung des Quellverhaltens von hochverdichtetem Bentonit wurden eine große Anzahl von Laborversuchen durchgeführt. Um die Entwicklung eines nahezu homogenen und isotropen Quelldrucks nachzuweisen, wurden darüber hinaus auch Modellversuche in größerem Maßstab durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Modellversuche wurden im Hinblick auf die Wasseraufnahme und das Spannungs-Verformungsverhalten mit Hilfe numerischer Berechnungen mit den finite Element Programmen FEST 03 und HYDOPO interpretiert. Die Untersuchungen zeigen gute Übereinstimmungen zwischen Versuchs- und Berechnungsergebnissen. Die numerischen Modelle sind somit geeignet, das Verhalten von Abdichtungsbauwerken aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit zutreffend zu beschreiben. RÉSUMÉ: Une possibilité pour fermer un dépôt final de déchets radioactifs dans sel gemme est la construction d'un étanchement de coupe transversale, fabriqué de bentonite fortement compacté. Pour étudier le comportement de gonflement de bentonite fortement compacté, de nombreux essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés. En outre, des essais sur modèle sur une plus grande échelle ont aussi été exécutes afin de prouver le développement d'une pression de gonflement à peu près homogène et isotrope. Les résultats de ces essais sur modèle étaient interprétés en vue de l'absorption d'eau et du comportement contraintes-déformations par le moyen de calculs numériques avec les programmes d'éléments finis FEST03 et HYDOPO. Les études montrent de bonnes conformités entre des résultats d'essai et de calcul. Les modèles numériques sont ainsi capables de décrire justement le comportement d'ouvrages d'étanchement fabriqués de bentonite fortement compacté.

ENGINEERING COUNCIL has passed, not out, but upward! Therefore, its recent wake was conducted by itself as a joyful occasion somewhat in advance of its official demise. Council held its last meeting in Washington, Dec. 16, 1920. Business was transacted with dignified gravity in the forenoon. During the afternoon calls were made upon the chiefs of technical bureaus of the Government: the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army; Chief of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department; Director of U. S. Reclamation Service; Director of U. S. Geological Survey; Director of Bureau of Mines. The Council pronounced them, each and all, able men and true. But what of the evening? Well, there was a dinner at the Washington Hotel. Twenty-six men gathered around a flower-strewn table-not a casket. As guests, there graced the festive board the hosts of the afternoon calls, and a number of members of the new American Engineering Council. The body about to be apotheosized-otherwise known as Engineering Council-was both jocular and reminiscent. Rewards were bestowed and appreciations expressed. To the man who had for three long years borne the burden of chairmanship and whose financial recklessness made possible the Washington office and the movement for a National Public Works Department, the following "note," duly engrossed and signed, was given, accompanied by "The Song of the Council Crew."

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1991 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, total output for the continent declined for many major mineral commodities produced compared with that of 1990. Also, Africa's share of total world output of these commodities generally declined. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines were for cobalt and copper owing to mining and metal processing difficulties experienced by the world's two largest cobalt producers, Zaire and Zambia. Phosphate rock output declined primarily owing to a sharp fall in production from Morocco, also a leading world producer. Morocco's state corporation for phosphate production experienced marketing problems, leading to the decline.

Fume events in coalmines are typically associated with wet conditions, soft ground and deep holes. An ACARP research project used laboratory and field testing combined with literature reviews, numerical models and field investigations to characterise the influence of these conditions on the propensity for fume. This paper highlights the results for soft ground and wet conditions and proposes a proactive fume mitigation methodology. A simple numerical model is used to show how fume arises in soft rock that yields more under the loading of high-pressure, water-resistant explosive blends than for ANFO. The blends cool more rapidly after detonation into the lower temperature zone favourable for NO2 production. Low-pressure, high detonation temperature explosives are loaded or charged into soft ground. Water resistance must be considered because soft, faulted and fractured ground can lead to fume from degradation by water flow and non-ideal detonation of product in cracks.A suite of tests were developed to quantify ANFO and emulsion blend performance over time that can be carried out in a mobile laboratory on-site. Index tests such as viscosity measurement and water resistance in beakers are proposed to quantify long-term product performance because small components, such as surfactant, prill impurities and prill fines, contribute to inconsistent product performance. Water ingress experiments and detonation tests aligned with field investigations identified and characterised the role of groundwater in damaging ANFO and causing fume.Fume risk management is achieved using a proposed proactive fume mitigation methodology to characterise influences such as seasonal rain variation, groundwater flow hydrogeology, rock mass strength and structure well ahead of blast design. This paper details a brief history of the Australian gold industry from the 1980s gold boom to the present day, highlighting an industry characterised by innovation in plant design and junior companies prepared to "have a go", in contrast to the conservatism of many larger mining companies. Design flexibility, the innovation of new processes, the preparedness to exchange "process know how" and technology singularly differentiated the gold industry from other sectors during the 1980s to the present. The introduction of two stage crushing, semi autogenous (SAG) milling, and pebble crushing, mill innovations, carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) and the North Kalgoorlie screen etc were all exciting changes in the industry.

The Bureau of Mines conducted oil-displacement tests in the laboratory with three water-in-oil and five oil-in-water emulsions that were created with ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kHz and an acoustic intensity of approximately 100 watts per cm2. Emulsions of either crude oil or kerosine, brine, and 112 to 2 percent emulsifier were formed during 30 seconds of acoustic irradiation. Results indicate that ultrasonic energy induces greater and more uniform dispersion of one liquid in another in the presence of small amounts of chemi¬cal emulsifiers. When the emulsions were injected as a buffer slug before waterflooding, recovery of the oil-in-place was 8 to 22 percent greater than with conventional waterflooding in the test specimens, regardless of the con¬tinuous phase (oil or brine). The emulsions do not appear to be applicable to the Appalachian area; however, because the oilfields are too "tight," the clays in the formation remove the emulsifier from the displacing fluid, and not enough additional oil is produced, compared with recovery using conventional waterflooding, to warrant the increased operating costs.

"Two three-dimensional models of a surface tension gradient driven flow during laser surface heating are developed. The first model is based on a perturbation solution. The basic solution corresponds to the stationary axisynwnetric case and perturbation is based on a small scanning velocity. The advantage of seeking a perturbation solution, as it turns out, is that the three-dimensional flow is modeled by two sets of two-dimensional equations which are presumably much more tractable than the original three-dimensional equations. Numerical solutions are obtained and discussed. The second model is a full three-dimensional numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, using a point-by-point partially vectorized iteration scheme. Surface shape is also determined in a self-consistent manner. The effect of the presence of convection on pool geometry, cooling rate and solute redistribution is presented and discussed.IntroductionThe existence of fluid flow and convection and their effects were first reported in the fifties (1,2). The role of convection in controlling pool geometry such as pool shape, undercut and ripples, and defects such as variable penetration, porosity and lack of fusion and weld properties such as weld homogeneity and bead formation is studied by a number of researchers and is reviewed by the authors in a recent paper (3).Recently, surface tension gradient driven flow has been identified as one of the forces responsible for convection within the molten pool (4,5). It is postulated that surface tension gradient driven flow is responsible for the surface ripple formation in the weld pool (6-8). Oreper, et al. (9) developed a two-dimensional convection model. Buoyancy, electromagnetic and surface tension gradient forces were considered. The formulation was based on a specified pool profile. It was found that the surface tension gradient is the dominant force in most cases. However, the solid-liquid interface is not known a priori. In fact, the solid-liquid interface, i.e. the pool shape, is a piece of information that the model should be able to predict. A two-dimensional transient self-consistent (i.e. the solid-liquid interface is solved as part of the solution] model for laser surface melted pool was first developed by Chan, Mazumder, and Chen (3)). This model predicted a non-uniform cooling rate, hence non-uniform microstructure. Depending on the Prandtl number (i.e. material) and surface tension number, the shape of the molten region as well as the cooling rate changes. It was also predicted that the recirculating velocity is of one or two order of magnitude higher than that of the scanning velocity. This model provides the detail of the flow field and heat transfer on a plane perpendicular to the scanning direction. However, the front-to-back motion and its effect on heat transfer also play important roles in the physical process, especially for the fact that the recirculating velocity is so much higher than the scanning velocity. Such a motion cannot be obtained from two-dimensional models."

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, conditions were determined to form an iron sulfide adherent coating with a metallic golden luster on steel upon anaerobic heat treatment with sulfur. The sulfide formation rate was determined in the temperature range of 105° to 500° C with reaction times up to 68 hours. The optimum temperature and time to form an adhering decorative coating on mild steel was in the range of 105° C for about 70 hours to 285° C for 1 hour. The golden coating consisted of an inner layer of pyrrhotite and an outer layer of pyrite. At temperatures higher than about 300° C, the outer layer thickness decreased owing to the decomposition of pyrite to pyrrhotite.. Small quantities (<0.5 wt-pct) of petroleum oil accelerated the sulfide growth rate. The sulfide coating decreased the corrosion rate of steel in a neutral aqueous medium by a factor of two. The dissolution of pyrite in water was dependent on particle size and surface area with the flat pyrite coatings exhibiting the lowest dissolution rate.

In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is a 6.92 kilometer (4.3 mile) long major toll bridge span that crosses the northern San Francisco Bay in a highly seismically active region. Tutor-Saliba / Koch / Tidewater JV was contracted by Caltrans to conduct a comprehensive seismic retrofit. The JV provided geotechnical planning and quality control services as described herein, under normal oversight by Caltrans. Part of the robust foundation retrofit design included the installation of 26 new, large diameter piles, including eleven 3.81 m (12.5 ft) diameter, cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) marine piles that were drilled 9.15 m (30 ft) into the bedrock beneath the Bay, where the water depth ranged up to about 21.3 m (70 ft). These reinforced concrete-filled composite piles have a steel shell permanent casing from the bridge substructure pile cap through the water column and 30.5 to 39.6 meters (100 ft to 130 ft) of marine sediments to the top of rock. This paper discusses construction, inspection (ranging from the QA employed in the planning of the CIDH pile installation methods and equipment to the actual construction inspection required for the routine installation of the shafts), problems that were encountered during construction, and the solutions that were developed and implemented. Inspection, particularly with the usual difficulties in the marine environment, coupled with the difficult and complex bedrock conditions was particularly challenging, and ranged from non-destructive testing to "in-water, inshell" diver inspection. Similarly, the complexities of dealing with both the steel casing "riser" and the associated drilled shaft (rock socket) portion of these composite foundation elements created some unusual issues. The paper also presents important lessons learned from the project.

The continuous miner training system provides classroom materials training aids, and a continuous miner simulator to provide a short, intensive instruction and skills development program for training or retraining continuous miner operators. This project included refinement of training objectives, revision of training aids, improvements to the simulator, and evaluation of the entire system. This report describes the revised classroom materials and the validation of the training system.

As a result of ever increasing complexity, alternatives of process and remoteness of site, there is an ever increasing emphasis on accurate estimating and the attendant cost control systems in the international market of today for the Mineral Industry where initial plant costs are becoming a more important factor than operating costs. An undervaluation means trouble ahead. An over-cautious assessment may bring an unnecessary abandonment of a project. Consequently, the ultimate cost must be predicted early and accurately and must be controlled to this parameter during the design and construction phases. Cost Est!~ mating is one of a variety of project management tools used to assist in planning and achieving the optimum balance between Quality, Cost and Time, the eternal triangle of evaluation, namely obtaining a project of acceptable quality at minimum cost and on time. The caisson is adapted to the foundation of concentrated heavy building. As there are the flowing sand, boulder or cobble and other serious obstruction, the open caisson can&apos;t sink, the caisson can solve these problems easily. Especially for the stability of the neighour building, the merit of the caisson is outstanding. Therefore, there are the pier, the foundation of heavy instrument and the large water pumping station etc. using the caisson in China. This paper introduce several caissons and successful experience by author&apos;s investigation. It contains the feature and application of the caisson : the examples of caissons such as a huge pier of a bridge acrossing a big river, a large instrument foundation and a large water pump station beside a river; the problem of the design of the caisson and notice items during the caisson construction etc.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the conditions required to sinter a pyrrhotite calcine into a product suitable for iron blast furnace feed . The calcine , a fine - grained iron oxide produced by roasting sulfide flotation concentrate , analyzed about 60 percent iron and 1 percent sulfur . Sintering of the calcine without prior pelletization was not successful whereas firing of preformed calcine charges yielded acceptable sinter products . Batch tests were made to study the effect of the following variables on the sinter quality : Size of green pellets in the charge , quantity and type of internal carbonaceous fuel used , depth of sinter bed , moisture content of the charge , flux additions , and binder additions . The batch and continuous sinter tests showed that minus 1 / 4 - inch pellets prepared from a mixture of the calcine , coke , dolomite , and water gave sinter cakes analyzing 57 to 61 percent iron and 0.05 to 0.02 percent sulfur .

During trials which began in May 2005, traditional steel dump bodies for transporting iron ore on 220-tonne haul trucks at a Labrador iron ore mine were compared to a novel rubber suspended dump body. Loads were measured and compared over some 93 700 loads, representing more than 20 Mt transported. Maintenance costs and downtime were also measured over the course of the trial, which lasted nearly one year. This paper outlines the parameters and results of the trials. Parameters measured included payload and production improvements, carry-back reduction, downtime due to body maintenance, and wear on the floor of the suspended dump body. These parameters were then compared to those for conventional steel dump bodies in use at the mine, and conclusions were drawn. The resulting comparisons were significantly positive in favour of the new suspended dump bodies, confirming that each truck could haul an additional 41 000 tonnes per year, that downtime hours could be considerably reduced, and that body availability and service life can be extended through use of the suspended dump body. There was also a high level of operator acceptance of the suspended dump bodies due to less loading shock and a smoother ride.
