A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill. The design of the Hicom mill is unique. Based on a high speed centrifugal motion of the grinding chamber, very high power intensity is delivered to the grinding process. Most significantly, a high acceleration field, 50 times stronger than gravity is produced, creating very high power input per unit of mill volume, and exceptionally fast particle breakage rates, typically 50 - 100 times greater than those in conventional tumbling mills. A mill developing such forces has significant implications to comminution technology and practice.

This paper explores the structural/physical and policy based issues that have lead to the apparent resource conflict between Forestry and Mining on the West Coast. Both industries are important to the West Coast and bear many similarities, particularly at the corporate end of the mining scale. However there are very distinct structural differences which set the scene for friction at the boundaries. Examples of how mining impacts upon forestry illustrate where some of the friction arises and provides some insight as to where some solutions are or may be found.

"The main objective of this study is to find a solution to design a mass flow observer system with the minimum required sensors and maximum observability for a mineral processing plant. The second objective is designing a mass flow observer configuration with high reliability to manage sensor failures. This configuration will provide a robust monitoring system that increases plant availability and process measurement fault detection. Furthermore, the monitoring system is expected to improve process efficiency. In this investigation, the procedure of designing an observer system is presented along with three models to design the sensor network. The advantages and disadvantages of each models are discussed and finally the models result for an industrial case are presented and analyzed. INTRODUCTION The concepts of observability and redundancy of mass flow are directly linked with the ability to solve and estimate the mass flow. There are hundreds of streams in a process plant flowsheet, and for technical and economic reasons it is not possible to measure all mass flows. It is thus important to know for a set of measured streams, which of the unmeasured streams can be estimated. The concept of observability deals with this issue. It is also valuable to know whether a measured mass flow of streams can be estimated even if a sensor fails for some reason. Redundancy deals with this failure question. A stream is said to be observable if it can be estimated by using the measurements and/ or mass conservation equations. Also, a stream is redundant if it is observable even when its measurement is removed. Observability and redundancy analysis can be exploited for adding new measuring instruments. It can also play a useful role in efficient decomposition and data reconciliation problem (Narasimhan and Jordache 1999). The value of an observer system cannot be justified without considering its benefits. This justification is done through evaluation of data reconciliation, gross error detection and improving process performance such as outlined below:"

Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. Nowadays, one of the main problems in current flotation plants and new projects is the significant decrease in feed grades and changes in the mineral composition, which has an important effect on the mineral liberation and associations. Additionally, flotation plants usually operate with feed throughput higher than the original design, which has a significant impact on the feed particle size. All these conditions affect metallurgical performance, and must be evaluated and addressed, by improving control strategies for banks optimisation. For this purpose, the flotation of valuable minerals along the circuits requires better understanding, considering the compromise between performance and selectivity in flotation circuits. This paper presents a characterisation of the different minerals recovered along industrial flotation circuits. Plant sampling campaigns, performed in a copper industrial concentrator in Chile, provided the data for the study. Two rougher flotation banks consisting of cells of 130 m3 and 300 m3 were analysed. All the samples from the industrial surveys were analysed by screening and mineralogy, and the mineral recovery along the circuits was evaluated per particle size class, liberation class, type of associations, and others. Additionally, operating data on froth depth profiles complemented the evaluation of the mineral composition of concentrate streams, along the circuit. The results allowed for identifying and quantifying the main factors that affect the copper recovery and concentrate grade along the flotation banks. It was found that minerals with liberation lower than 50 per cent have a significant impact on the recovery. On the other hand, the decrease in the Cu grade in concentrates along the flotation circuits is mainly due to the relative increase of middling minerals (less liberated), non-valuable floatable minerals, such as free pyrite, and gangue entrainment. The characterisation of the gangue entrainment flow rate along the flotation banks showed a strong relationship with froth depth, which becomes more critical towards the last cells of the banks.

The Bureau of Mines drilled and sampled the more important magnesite deposits in the Currant Creek Mining District, White Pine County, Nev. The properties of the Ala-Mar Magnesium Co., Inc., and the Nevada Magnesite Co. were examined in August 1942 by D. W. Butner, engineer of the Bureau of Mines, to determine the advisability of investigating the deposits under the strategic minerals program. Development involving diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling was started September 1, 1942, and was completed in the latter part of November 1942. The deposits are on unsurveyed public land in T. 12N., B. 59 E., M.D.B.&M., in an area of high relief ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet in altitude. Both properties are situated northwest of the Tonopah-Ely Highway, U.S. Highway 6, from which a dirt road extends about 4.6 miles northwesterly, about 35 miles southwest of Ely, to the Ala-Mar property, and another dirt road extends about 10 miles westerly, about 26 miles southwest of Ely, to the Nevada Magnesite property. The magnesite occurs as irregular nodules, veins, and lenses in a bedded calcareous tuff formation, which overlies a group of volcanic rocks, and which is capped by remnants of rhyolite flows.

The following example of the practical application of engineering geology is of interest in that it demonstrates the advantage of keeping accurate records of all wells, whether drilled by onn's self or by others, together with the advantage gained by gathering such data during the process of development. The fault described was found in the autumn of 1915, during the hurried development caused by the discovery of the famous Gusher Bend pool in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The writer was at the time employed by one of the operating companies as geologist, and the example is a portion of the routine work. Location The oil fields of northern Louisiana and east Texas are located in Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River Parishes, Louisiana, and Marion County, Texas. A very narrow strip of the eastern portion of the latter is productive. The producing oil pools are known as the Caddo Field, in the northern part, and the De Soto-Red River Field, in the southern. The two fields are 60 miles apart. There are several gas fields between them, but no important supply of oil has been found, though there are several producing wells in the Anona chalk, locally called the Chalk Rock, in the Elm Grove gas field in Township 16 North, Range 11 West (see Plate 1). THE following presentation is more a summation of observations made and conclusions drawn over a period of three to four years than a report of experiments made with a definite objective. Tests were made, of course, to verify hypotheses, but the large mass of data was collected incidental to other work. Lack of space forbids the presentation of more than a few of those data. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that some of the most illustrative examples are not available. The work is admit¬tedly incomplete but is presented in the hope that it will stimulate further work along a similar line. The answers to many of the questions left unanswered by this paper will be found only after long and painstaking study, such as is scarcely possible in a commercial laboratory where problems of immediate importance consume most of the time. It is also hoped that this study will in some measure throw light on some of the dark spots of steelmaking, and help to clarify some of the annoyingly vague references to "good practice." Only cast steel was studied and the conclusions apply to cast steel, but it is the authors' opinion that the quality of rolled or forged steel is largely dependent on the quality of the ingot, which is a casting. Although this discussion deals almost entirely with inclusions, it is important that the reader understand that only those natural inclusions which owe their origin to the solubility of certain materials in steel and to the chemical reactions of steelmaking are considered. Accidental inclusions, such as entrapped particles of slag, nozzle, runner, or mold are outside its province and are not considered. Such accidental inclusions are always dangerous and should be carefully avoided.

A gravel pack completion is described which, in addition to sand screening, permits the exclusion of water and gas from the oil production. A gravel pack composed of alternate layers of different particle sizes is employed which has horizontal but not overall vertical permeability to drilling mud. A packer is run on the tubing and set in the screen member, around which the gravel layers are placed. The hydrostatic pressure of a mud column prevents the entry of fluid above (or below) the level of the packer. The producing level may be changed by raising or lowering the tubing. Vertical coning is controlled by replacing the mud column with oil and continually injecting oil into the sand section above (or below) the packer. Three well histories with this completion are described in detail. Statistics on the first 100 completions of this general type are given. INTRODUCTION Gravel pack type completions have heretofore been almost exclusively for the purpose of preventing sand production. This paper describes and presents well data on a gravel pack procedure which is primarily a selective completion method. Although complete sand screening is achieved, the exclusion of gas and water is the primary objective. The application of this procedure is therefore not limited to unconsolidated sands. Application to hard sand or limestone reservoirs is equally feasible. GRAVEL PACK PROCEDURE Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the gravel pack procedure employed. The gravel is placed by means of the frangible disc type dump bailer shown by Fig. 1.' This bailer has its lower end closed by a plate glass or steel rimmed cement disc. This disc breaks when the bailer passes over the liner allowing the gravel to be deposited around the liner. The liner employed is usually 2 3/8 in. to 2 7/8 in. OD and 1.995 in. or 2.07 in. ID (ID of 2-in. tubing or 2-in. line pipe). Two tvDes,. of slotted sections have been employed. One type employs horizontal hacksaw cut or milled slots of about 1/32 in. width opposite the producing section. The other type employs the same type,. of horizontal slot. but slots are placed in groups of six at intervals of about 8 in. A cage composed of half round vertical bars, spaced apart, is then welded to the pipe over the slotted sections. This liner has the bottom end closed, usually by bull plugging. The upper end is closed, while placing the gravel, by a cap which is held in place by means of a shear pin. This cap has a mandrel attached to it which extends downward inside of the liner to within a few inches of its lower end. The top of the liner cap is formed to fit a releasing type wire line core barrel overshot. The liner is lowered to bottom on the wire line by means of this overshot and released. The length of the liner is usually suffi- cient to extend to about 20 ft above the highest level to which gravel is to be placed, the upper end of the liner always being in the casing. The dimensions of the liner and bailer are such with respect to the casing size that the bailer will always pass over the liner. After releasing the liner the bailer is run to bottom. The South African mines health and safety regulations require that mine management establish a quality management system for rock support material. Quality control of resin capsules used as a support medium in South Africa is specified under SA National Standards No 1534. Experience has shown that this specification, while addressing the chemical and physical aspects of the products, but does not address the required performance criteria. In order to address this shortcoming, the industry has put a lot of emphasis on short encapsulation pull tests, performed insitu, in the underground workings of the mine. This is also fraught with many shortcomings, particularly as regards site availability, cost and repeatability of results. To try and address these issues, the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Pretoria University were approached to develop equipment and machinery that could produce reliable, repeatable results in a laboratory environment which reasonably simulates installation practice underground. The test method is based on the ASTM F432-95 Strength Index test, but modified to use push test rather than pull tests. The paper describes development of the test method and the preliminary results and findings of the work.

The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. This Taoism, which is described as the "way of harmony" with its three jewels of character, gentleness, economy and humility, advocates the minimum of social, economic and political organization and still gives the key to the Chinese character.The Mongol and Manchu conquests of the 12th and 17th centuries, respectively, could hardly be dignified with the name of war, but the superior intelligence and harder mentality of the unwarlike Chinese finally absorbed...

FOR several years, the rock-burst question has been given serious consideration by the operating staff at Wright-Hargreaves mine and, as a result of observations and experiences, several different methods of mining have been developed which are now in use in various parts of the mine. These are described in the following pages. It should be emphasized, how-ever, that these methods, and the views expressed in this paper, are based solely on conditions at Wright-Hargreaves mine. Such conditions may or may not be similar to those obtaining in other mines in the Kirkland Lake area, where ore occurrences, veins, wall-rock, faulting, intrusives, etc., may be entirely different. Size and shape of ore-bodies, composition of the ore-bodies and their surrounding rocks, locations of intrusives and sedimentary rocks, and direction, dip, and strength of faults, all introduce problems that are peculiar to each individual mine. Ground failure' in coal and metal mines is not at all unusual. A variety of systems of mining have been developed to delay movement of large or small blocks of ground, or, in some instances, to take advantage of the fact that ground movement, due to mining operations, is unavoidable. Ground failure may be either slow collapse or it may take place with explosive violence. It is principally with the latter condition that we are concerned in the mines of the Kirkland Lake district.

[THIS PAPER, tine of a series on placer ml n in iii Alaska, describes mining methods and gives unit costs at operations where hydraulic and mechanical excavation equipment is used with nonfloating washing plants. The mining methods described were developed during the last 30 years to copy with conditions peculiar to arctic and subarctic regions arid are now used by a large segment of the placer mining industry in Alaska. The operations described have been classified if m ii into three main categories: Those having sluices at a bedrock level, those having sluices above bedrock and those having mobile nonfloating washing plants (dryland dredges). Diesel-powered bulldozers and draglines convey or clevate gold-bearing gravel to the sluices, remove tailings, and strip waste gravel and other overburden. Diesel-powered centrifugal pumps supply water foe sluicing and hydraulic stripping. Detailed descriptions and unit cost arc presented for 14 operations to illustrate the numerous arrangements udder the first 2 categories.]

There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

Small ion-exchange resin particles provide faster mass transport than conventional-sized beads. Unfortunately, high pressures are needed to pump solutions through columns containing small resin particles. It is preferable to disperse fine resins in the solution being treated. Screens have been used to separate the resin from the solution, but screens do not retain fines created by attrition of the resin particles. We have developed a separation process based on flotation, which relies on the surface characteristics of the resin, instead of size. The resin is conditioned with a surfactant before dispersing it in the solution to be treated; this increases the hydrophobicity of the resin sufficiently for froth flotation, without introducing surfactant directly into the solution. The surfactant adsorbed on the resin surface does not appear to impair the kinetics of metal ion removal. A flowsheet for an effluent treatment process is proposed; other applications are clearly possible.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an emerging environmental management tool for examining environmental impacts from cradle to grave. In this paper, LCA is used to evaluate the acidification potential (AP) and global warming potential (GWP) of belt conveyors and truck haulage systems in a surface gold mine using the ISO 14040 standards. The results show that, for AP, the truck system has 32 kg of equivalent SO2 per functional unit, compared to 8 kg for the conveyor system. However, for GWP, the conveyor has 2,820 kg of equivalent CO2 per functional unit, compared to 648 kg for the truck option.
