The Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations in two underground mines to determine the actual loads to which bearing plates were subjected when installed in conjunction with full-column resin-grouted bolts and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Vertical displacement gauges installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites show that the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement.

FMC Corp. achieved a significant cost reduction at its Green River, WY soda ash operations using a new proprietary solution-mining and processing technology. In phase one of the program, trona ore is dissolved, recovered and processed with the new technology. It is then fed into an existing refining plant, replacing dry mined and calcined trona ore. Phase two produces a final high-purity product. It also increases capacity by 635 kt/a (700,000 stpy). Both phases were completed under budget and ahead of schedule. This $120-million expansion project uses a new process and a new team to derive soda ash in a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. The team successfully introduced solution-mining technology - with a liquid solution injected into previously mined sections of the mine. This shift in techniques signified a new era for soda ash production. The project is an example of teamwork at its best. For it to be successful, FMC had to work within several different areas inside and outside of the company. Engineers, contractors, mechanical operators and technical people were needed who could blend in with FMC's existing in-house team.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo comparar o desempenho de processo entre espirais convencionais e espirais de grande diâmetro, na concentração de minérios de ferro. Foram realizadas campanhas de testes para levantar os dados necessários para comparar os dois modelos de espirais em estudo. Os resultados mostraram que as principais variáveis que afetaram a eficiência de separação nas espirais foram a abertura dos lemes e a concentração de sólidos na alimentação. A espiral de grande diâmetro obteve resultados melhores, mesmo sem a utilização de água de lavagem, porém mais testes serão necessários para uma conclusão definitiva.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. The geology of the area studied is briefly described, together with the prospecting methods used in the search for copper, lead, zinc and uranium ore bodies.Four prospects, Mt. Corella, Yanasinga, Lawlor's and Greenmount, which were diamond-drilled, are described in detail and geochemical results are discussed in relation to the mineralization found. Copper anomalies were found wherever intrusive rocks were mapped, and showed a much closer relation to geology and mineralization than did the predominantly lead and zinc anomalies.Geochemical prospecting aids in the overall mineral search programme because of its speed and economy, as it helps to pinpoint areas worthy of detailed geological examination. Geochemical anomalies are a guide to favourable zones but may not indicate the presence of ore.INTRODUCTIONDuring 1953-55 the National Lead Company of New York carried out a search for minerals in an area south and west of Cloncurry (Fig. 1) in rocks of Precambrian age. After reconnaissance mapping, a number of prospects were chosen for closer examination by detailed geological mapping and geochemical sampling, and from these prospects, five sites were selected for drilling.This paper records the salient features of the exploration programme and discusses the geology and geochemistry of four of the prospects-Mt. Corella, Yanasinga, Lawlor's and Greenmount. Practically all the prospects examined showed high zinc "anomalies" or "dispersion" trains. Greta, Mt. Corella and Lawlor's prospects showed some copper anomalies and, to a lesser extent, lead anomalies. In particular, Greenmount exhibited striking copper anomalies.

"El siguiente trabajo refiere los métodos de explotación empleados en la mina San Antonio de Esquilache por la Compañía de Minas del Perú, considerando previamente los métodos de preparación y desarrollo empleados. Para ello, se describen primero las labores de acceso, constituídas por los socavones de cortada, siendo el más utilizado el ""Farrallón"" que conduce el relleno a los parajes y la explotación de los minerales explotados, mientras que el ""Hardy"" se encarga de la extracción del mineral. Luego están las labores de desarrollo, comprendidas por las galerías y chimeneas sobre veta, donde las primeras son proyectadas a una diferencia de nivel que varía de 30 a 40 metros y a una distancia fija de 30 metros las segundas. La preparación de los tajeos se inicia con el ""desquinche"" de las galerías, al tiempo que se coloca la enmaderación. Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. The industry’s hopes for new projects have been dashed and questions are being raised as to the financial viability of such projects.A comparison of Grange Resources Savage River, Arrium’s Project Magnet, the Sino Iron Project and Gindalbie’s Karara Iron Project is used to understand the differences between the projects and why some are more successful than others.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2015. The New England States form the most northeastern portion of the continental United States and include Connecticut, Rhode island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. These states have an aggregate population of over 10.5 million people, and an average annual population rate increase of about 1.3%. A great deal of new construction is required each year to meet the increasing demand for new homes, roads, offices, factories, and warehouses. Yet, prices of construction materials such as blocks and concrete are generally higher in New England than in other well populated areas of the United States. This is an indication of local demand being somewhat greater than supply, an atmosphere conducive to new developments in the production of construction materials. One such field of development is the rapidly growing Lightweight Aggregate Industry. Recent construction in Boston has used a great deal of lightweight aggregate. New structures using lightweight aggregate in lightweight concrete include the following: M.I.T.'s 20-story Earth Science Center and 17-story Married Students Housing Project Prudential Life Insurance Center, West End Redevelopment Project at Charles River Park, Hotel Americana, and the British-owned 33-story office building at 50 Pearl Street.

Noranda?s Brunswick mine is a 10 000 t/d producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400 m and 1200 m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio, an overall steeply dipping tabular shape, and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) have elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning. Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically.

The use of pellet feed to adjust the chemical quality of the sinter is an alternative to the depletion of iron ore reserves. However, the addition of ultrafine in the sintering process can cause decrease of permeability and consequent drop in machine productivity. In this context, the present work investigated the addition of natural and ground pellet feed, evaluating its effects on cold agglomeration for sintering and quality of quasi-particles produced. Eight typical mixtures with industrial composition were produced in the laboratory, replacing Sinter Feed with different percentages of Natural Pellet Feed (NPF, 91% <150 μm) and Ground Pellet Feed (GPF, 83% <44 μm). The mixtures were subjected to cold agglomeration tests and the quasi-particles produced were evaluated by screening, shatter test, permeability test and disintegration into primary particles analysis. There was a decrease in the mean particle size of quasi-particles and reduce in permeability with addition of the ultrafines. The addition of NPF favored the layering mechanism in larger quasi-particles. The coalescence mechanism occurred for larger additions of NPF and GPF, being more expressive for GPF additions.

Hatch (260) made the following pertinent statement regarding the present status of engineering design of dust-control equipment: Textbooks on ventilation and engineering handbooks devote little or no space to methods of control of industrial dust, and in the technical journals papers on fundamental engineering design of equipment are conspicuous by their absence. In a recent bibliography of the literature on pneumoconiosis less than 1 percent of the articles dealt with the engineering control of the disease. The science of dust control has not developed beyond the stage of trial and error, and the design of structures for the suppression of dust is based almost entirely upon empirical data together with one or two elementary formulas. The latter were derived from the generalized experience in a limited number of Industries such as woodworking, where conditions and requirements are not at all like those, for example, in a sand-pulverizing plant. Wide experience and good judgment are essential to the proper use of the scanty information that has been collected and systematized. Without attempting to minimize the importance of experience in engineering design, it is necessary to point out that most of the past experience obtained in the empirical design of dust-control equipment was not evaluated by means of quantitative studies of the actual reduction in dust , fence, past experience does not necessarily furnish the proper guide for future design. In fact, recent surveys in certain industries, employing modern methods of investigation, have shown that existing equipment is in many cases inadequate.

THE town of Jerome is located in Yavapai County in north central Arizona. It has a population of over 6000 people and the two important mines of the district, the United Verde and the United Verde Extension, lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde Valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft.. (1463 and 1676 m.), both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which ore is hauled to their respective smelters. The two smelter towns of Clarkdale and Verde, out in. the center of the valley and about 2000 ft. (609 m.) below, form part of the wide panorama that meets the eye at Jerome. This panorama and the topographic and surface features and the geologic formations are shown in a separate pamphlet. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "the rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the, highest parts of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. The two lava-capped mesas, known as Mingus and Woodschute Mountains, form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests -and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome or Verde copper district. However, if the smelters are not included, a strip about 7 mi. long and 3 mi. wide (11 by 5 km.) embraces practically all the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from about First View, 2 mi. northwest of Jerome, to the neighborhood of Allen Spring, near the south end of Mingus. Mountain. The rank of the district in copper production, as well as features of peculiar geologic interest in connection with the ore occurrences, entitle the district to much more consideration than it has received in the literature of copper mining. Arizona stands preeminent as a copper-producing state. In 1918, it produced four-tenths of the total amount produced in the United States, and nearly equaled the, combined production of its three chief competitors, Montana, Michigan, and Utah. Wrought magnesium alloys are of special interest as lightweight structural components as a result of their more homogeneous microstructures and improved mechanical properties compared to cast components. Extrusion as a shaping technology offers the possibility to produce a wide variety of magnesium alloy profiles. In this contribution we describe the role of extrusion parameters such as extrusion speed, ratio and temperature as well as the type of extrusion process on the microstructural development of AZ-series magnesium alloys and the resulting mechanical properties. The effect of microstructure on the tensile/compression deformation behavior of the alloys has also been investigated. Aspects of process optimization designed to overcome technical and economic limitations and thus establish magnesium alloy profiles for industrial applications will also be discussed.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

IN spite of the uncertainty in the bituminous coal industry during 1933, progress worth recording has been made. Along with other industries, coal has felt the effects of business stagnation, but even in the worst weeks of the past four years, .the total production of bituminous coal in the United States was seldom less than half the production in some of the best weeks of the more prosperous years, a record better than that of many industries. However, the competition of other fuels and sources of power, together with the increased efficiency in the use of coal, has brought anxiety to producers. This has resulted in pressure for reduction of costs, not always by the wisest means. On the other hand, the effort to survive has directed increasing interest toward research, a wholesome development in a difficult situation. Wages, limitation of hours of labor, and the NRA have occupied much time and thought. Following a period .of wage cutting paralleling price cutting, the industry found itself rather suddenly faced by the President&apos;s Agreement, followed in due course by the Code, and then in many places by the agreement with the United Mine Workers. Although there is still some uncertainty in regard to the detailed working out of the new arrangements, there seems to be an honest endeavor by the signatories to the Code and Agreement to work them out in a straightforward manner.
