The New Zealand Minerals Industry is small but growing. Over the next 10 years it will be facing stiff international competition for skills to support this growth, particularly from Australia who are forecasting that a further 70 000 people will be employed by 2015.   The value of commodities mined and quarried in NZ continues to increase; and the value of coal, metals and industrial minerals production reached $1.505 billion in 2006, an increase of 15 per cent on 2005. Production increases will continue à. Latest Crown Minerals statistics show that national prospecting and exploration expenditure rose to $29.9 million in the year ended March 31 2006 û an increase of 46 per cent from the $20.4 million spent in the March 2005 year. The equivalent 2001 year expenditure was only $2.48 million.   The industry already experiences difficulty in recruiting the people it needs with ongoing demand for skilled underground miners, trades people, and mining professionals. This discussion paper will outline the national context with regard to labour, skills and training. It will suggest options and provide an opportunity for conference participants to discuss the way forward.

The Bureau of Mines studied pressure changes in coal pillars by using encapsulated hydraulic pressure cells to measure relative changes in stress developed during mining. The data indicate that (1) abutment stresses were detected when the pillar line is within 42 to 100 feet, (2) vertical pressure increases as coal is mined in the pillars, (3) at first pressure is higher at the edge of the pillar than in the core, but as mining progresses, the higher pressure is measured in the core of the stump, and (4) in the two instances where lateral pressures were measured, they remained lower than the vertical pressures during pillar extraction. The data also indicate that the mean vertical pressure increase, 6P, in a pillar is roughly related to the percent of pillar extracted, A, by the empirical parabolic equation

"The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The ability to simulate the explosive effects of land mines on military vehicles is a valuable capability in the defense community. The current competency levels of such simulations, however, are in need of improvement. Experiments have been conducted to measure the explosive induced impulse of a land mine on a steel plate placed above the explosive charge. The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a variety of simulation tests conducted in order to correctly predict the empirical impulse data gathered in corresponding experiments. The computer hydrocode, AUTODYN v5.0.01 (Century Dynamics, 2003), is the simulation code used to simulate, and process the results. The experimental data has not been made available to allow computer analysts to exercise their codes on the problem without the temptation to tweak parameters in order to match computer code predictions with experimental results

The rapid development of transportation facilities in Japan focused the attention of this country on the possibility of converting the existing coal resources (of which there was an abundance) into liquid fuels, for which there was a constantly increasing demand. Previous work had indicated that this could be accomplished by utilizing one of two processes - the Bergius process, in which high temperatures and high pressures were employed to effect direct liquefaction of the coal, and the Fischer-Tropsch process, in which an indirect liquefaction of coal was accomplished by the production of liquid hydro-carbons from hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixtures. This report describes some investigations into the latter process, which was first developed by Fischer and his colleagues in the Coal Laboratory in Muhlheim, Germany, in 1923. By 1932, these investigators had achieved a 60-percent theoretical yield (152 ml. of liquid hydrocarbons per cubic meter of 2H2:ICO synthesis gas) by using a precipitated Co-Th02 catalyst.3/ At the same time (1932), Dr. Kita of Kyoto Imperial University and Messrs. Fujimura and Tsuneoka obtained 145 ml. of gasoline (C5+) per cubic meter of synthetic gas by using a Co-Cu-Th-U catalyst. 4/ This report is a description of the experimental results subsequently obtained at the Fuel Research Institute, Kawaguchi City, Saitama, up to 1935.

"A significant area of Outotec’s business involves fluidized bed roasting. With several decades of experience, more than 300 reference plants and strong R&D capabilities, the company provides several industries with optimum processing solutions. Applications include oxidation and sulfation of sulfides found in copper, pyrite and zinc concentrates. Gold production and de-arsenifying roasting are also within this scope. This paper describes the latest furnace developments and includes novel trends. Moreover, hot and wet gas cleaning systems are examined focusing on unit operations related to the removal of components such as dust, SO2 for sulfuric acid production, fumes, halides, Hg, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and metals.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, when defining roasting processes, it can be stated that the respective primary pyrometallurgical reaction is exothermic, of gas-solid nature and relates to a value solid product. These processes are a key focus within Outotec’s scope and include: (i) dead roasting (ii) sulfating roasting (iii) partial de-arsenifying roasting and (iv) two-stage, de-arsenifying roasting.Dead roasting involves the oxidation of a given sulfide, thus allowing for a subsequent leaching process, and has been applied to producing ZnO. Dead roasting of pyrite has also been extensively utilized with a primary goal of producing sulfuric acid. In contrast, sulfating roasting involves converting a sulfide to its sulfate, enabling a selective sulfation of components, such as Cu or Co, and their separation from ferrous components during leaching (produced sulfates are soluble). Partial roasting involves partially oxidating the metal sulfide to its oxide with the simultaneous production of gaseous As4O6, which is handled during gas cleaning. The solid product, containing hardly any As, is rich in S and can be fed to a respective smelter (e.g. in the case of Cu). Alternatively, if the production of oxide is required, a dead roasting step is added after the partial roasting step, with the overall process considered as two-stage roasting."

Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

Benchmarking is a business management process that seeks improvement through the study and reapplication of practices conducted by industry leaders. This discussion presents objectives and organization of benchmarking applied to mining geomechanics. Similar procedures have been successfully applied to mining companies, laboratories, and research organizations involved in mining geomechanics throughout the world. Benchmarking is a structured process that allows an organization to learn from the "best" in the field. The objectives of benchmarking vary depending on the company's targeted areas for improvements. Typical goals include ground control cost reduction, enhanced safety, optimization of geotechnical staffing, development of state-of-the-art design procedures, or the adoption of the "best in the field" geotechnical data management. Once the objective of the study is established and the practices and procedures to be benchmarked are identified, a benchmarking team is formed from internal and outside specialists. Benchmarking in geomechanics is fundamentally different than in most other fields because of the effects of local geologic conditions and regulations, both of which must be understood by all on the benchmarking team, before a comparative analysis can be made.

Some are passed on from father to son, some are part of the pride of good farming, some wells are famous for tapping that huge underground stream or have been mysteriously witched or have been part of a rip-off by an unscrupulous well driller. Some have to be babied so that the cows can be watered, the children can have showers and the dishes can be done. All wells represent a significant $5,000 to $10,000 investment and is a key to making a living or sustaining a reasonable lifestyle.Most wells continue to provide water faithfully - until there is a problem. For those people living next to a mine, there is the additional concern that mining has or will affect their water well supplies. Water well problems reported to the mining company have to be dealt with promptly and responsibly. The mining company's groundwater specialist must gain the trust and confidence of well owners living in the area ."

The approach has been applied with success to the restoration of chalk workings in southern England, and research and trials relating to restoration blasting and the replication of limestone dale landforms have been undertaken. An essential prerequisite for application of the technique is rigorous geomorphological analysis of the locality to ensure that final quarry landforms are consistent with the local geomorphological and landscape setting. It is always important to ensure compatibility of the final landform with the intended after-use, and to achieve this it is also essential that such restoration schemes have a sound geotechnical basis. A disadvantage of the approach is that final slopes tend to be flatter, especially in weaker strata where natural slopes are not steep; the implications for reserves may be unacceptable, particularly in quarry extensions

In terms of tunnelling the mining industry is generally thought of as the crude cousin of the civil construction industry. Mining has tended to concentrate on speed and flexibility rather than the high standards required in civil tunnelling. Historically this difference has been based on the belief that such high standards were not required by the mining industry, they would slow down the development of the project and as a result increase the costs and extend the time period between start up and a positive cashflow.For civil works the construction of a tunnel is the project, for mining the construction of declines, crosscuts and drives are merely the means of accessing the orebody so that the real work can begin û MINING. Extraction of ore is the core business of most mining companies û it is what pays the bills.Though most mining companies have the equipment, the people, the knowledge and the ability to excavate tunnels, in the past mining companies did not appear to put the same energy into their tunnelling operations as they put into improving their ore extraction operations. In the past decade this appears to have changed, many mining companies now realise how important the correct excavation of a decline is to the success of the overall mining operation. They began to recognise that there were cost benefits to be gained in using the correct development techniques without overly sacrificing the benefits of speed and flexibility.This recognition also coincided with the growth of underground contractors whose predominant work was primary development (declines and ore access crosscuts and drives). The contractors again had the same knowledge, the same people, and similar equipment but their focus was different from that of the mining company û the contractors were focused on the development of the mine, the excavation of declines, crosscuts and drives. These deliverables were the contractorsÆ core business û itÆs what paid the bills.

For product sustainability “closing the cycle” is the first requirement. If the materials used in making the product is not replenished at the rate at which it is being extracted, the cycle is open and the product would not be sustainable. This includes the materials used in generating the energy used to make the product, the transportation, use and disposal. If the materials used in a product, that includes lubricants, is one that cannot be replenished, it has to be recycled for the product to be sustainable. The other basic condition for sustainability is the eco-friendliness of the product. It is argued that the present lubricants do not fall in this category. Using the example of cutting oil emulsions we have shown that it is possible to meet the conditions of sustainability in terms of both the material extraction-replenishment cycle and eco-toxicity. Cutting oil emulsions made from coconut oil and natural additives are shown to have superior cutting properties and are completely eco-friendly. It is concluded that products made using these conditions are possible and is a necessity for man to lead a sustainable life. Closing the cycle, with respect to the energy used in the cycle will make the product completely eco-friendly.

The Old Man Range, south of Alexandra, in central Otago consists of a package of highly folded greenschist facies schist of the Wanaka lithologic association. The range is crosscut by several east to ENE-striking high angle gold-bearing quartz veins, (eg Whites Reef and Grays Reef), which were extensively worked in the late 1800s. The range is bounded on its east side by the Old Man Fault, which separates these rocks from generally flat lying and planar Caples Terrane schist. To the west of the Old Man Fault, about halfway up the range, a large subparallel, 100 m wide fault zone strikes NNW and appears to cut off the historic veins. The fault zone consists of highly sheared and folded rocks and numerous high angle cataclasites and centimetre-scale clay gouge zones. Hydrothermal alteration is not apparent and the individual faults and shears are clay altered, possibly due to weathering, without visible quartz veins. Gold, limonite pseudomorphs after pyrite and rutile are concentrated in some of the narrow cataclasites and gouge zones. These mineralised structures are texturally similar to the gold-bearing reefs and may be structurally related. It is postulated that the NNW-striking shear zone and ENE-striking veins may be a conjugate array formed during a period of Cretaceous normal faulting.

Water occupies a dual role in our industrial society. It is the indispensable raw material, essential to life itself. It is equally an industrial nuisance, interfering with the production of industrial minerals, making construction difficult, flooding valuable land, and generally producing problems because it is in the wrong place at the critical time. The legal position of water as a nuisance, and the counter measures to be taken, have been well established procedures for determining the responsibility for damage caused by water, and the organization of drainage districts and flood control and levee districts have been legally tested many times. Thus there is rather adequate legal doctrine concerning water, the common enemy. But recently efforts have been made to regularize the position of water as a useful, industrial, commodity. Such laws are not new to the West, where the doctrine of appropriation for beneficial use is slowly becoming the water law. Elsewhere the University of Michigan has produced a "model" water law and efforts are being made to induce all of the states to use this law, or a slight variation of it, as the basis for legislation. There are many serious criticisms of the proposed "model"-law, and the writer strongly opposes many of the provisions. But the fact remains that water is, in itself, so useful and essential that laws have been, and will be, passed to insure the orderly development of our water resources and to prevent waste. The, most important aspect of these "water-use" laws is that, wise or unwise, the existing laws and the proposed laws have been "water oriented". "Water oriented" means that it has been tacitly assumed that the beneficial use of water, either surface water or ground water, is the overriding consideration.

The application of underground pre-concentration technology to narrow vein mining has the potential to change the entire economics of bulk mining methods when used in narrow vein situations. The rejection of waste at or near the face means that a higher-grade ore can be sent to surface. The waste rock can be reused directly as backfill. Swelling of the muck through blasting means that only 60 to 65% can be used as fill. Planning and scheduling of the fill usage is key to the success of this method. Through the use of simulation and system analysis, this paper examines the planning and scheduling implications of underground pre-concentration when applied to traditional narrow vein mining methods (cut-and-fill /drift-and-fill, longhole, AVOCA). It considers the logistical factors that represent potential system bottlenecks that are key to understanding the correct implementation and control strategies.

Kriged estimates are not typically calculated on blocks substantially smaller than the sample spacing (eg the Standard Mining Unit or SMU). Moreover, the sample spacing for quality variables is often much greater than the SMU size. For short to medium term planning decisions, the shorter term variability in the quality variables is a key economic consideration in defining, setting and meeting coal product specifications.Global uncertainties can be calculated using Drill Hole Spacing Analyses (DHSA). However, knowing the precision of a variable for a one or two year production volume is usually not adequate for variables with low spatial continuity that may fluctuate significantly over daily, weekly, SMU, or shipment volumes.Is there a feasible, reasonable and valid geostatistical method to model the uncertainty of coal quality variables on blocks substantially smaller than the drill spacing (say on the SMU)?The validity of using co-kriging variances, calculated on SMUs to characterise local uncertainty, was tested using a suite of conditional simulations generated for several quality variables for BHP’s Blackwater operation. The conditional simulation results were used as a benchmark against which the results derived from the kriging variances could be compared.The agreement between the kriging and simulation methods for thickness is excellent, with much closer correlations than for the quality variables. Typically, the kriging variances give very reasonable approximations to the simulation-based uncertainties, although there could be some systematic discrepancies which may become much more critical if a classification is to be based on a thresholding of the SMUs relative uncertainties.CITATION:Mawdesley, C, Barry, D, Bertoli, O and Saha, R, 2017. This report is principally concerned with the engineering and economic feasibility of area surface coal mining systems other than draglines. This analysis evaluates shovel/ trucks, shovel/crusher/conveyors, and shovel/rail excavation and haulage systems for an assortment of geologic environments and production rates in the Powder River Basin (PRB) Shovel/trucks, front-end loaders/ trucks, and shovel/crusher/conveyors were studied in a multi-seam, dipping geologic area of the Four Corners Region. The Texas lignite engineering and economic research involved bucket-wheel excavators (BWE), BWE/backhoes, and scraper/backhoe combinations for overburden and coal excavation. The PRE truck/shovel study utilized the most recent computer simulation available in both the design and cost analyses. Detailed engineering analysis, followed by in-depth operating costs (operating and depreciation) result in a complete evaluation of each mining system. Cost comparisons of the different mining systems under similar geologic and production constraints are presented in the report to illustrate the estimated capital investment and production costs per ton of coal and bank cubic yard of overburden.

Various electrical and electromagnetic (EM) geophysical techniques are currently being evaluated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for their effectiveness in the detection and monitoring of electrically conductive (1 to 5 S/m) lixiviant (leach solution) to depths of 600 m, either above or below the water table. These techniques include magnetotellurics (MT) , controlled source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT), resistivity and focused resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), frequency-domain electromagnetics (FEM), and time-domain electromagnetics (TEM). Of these techniques, TEM may be the most effective, but CSAMT and focused resistivity also hold promise. Geophysical computer modeling of the borehole TEM technique was conducted based on an idealized geoelectric section (layered earth) with characteristics based on the Santa Cruz porphyry copper deposit near Cas a Grande, AZ. Layer resistivities and thicknesses were obtained from geophysical data and geologic logs available from the site. Modeling of borehole TEM in both preleach and during leach situations was conducted. Simulating the TEM method using computer modeling proved to be encouraging since there were substantial differences between leached and nonleached responses. The modeling does not prove the effectiveness of TEM in the field, but does indicate that detection of deep lixiviant zones is theoretically possible.

In Comodoro Rivadavia, well 8. 132, drilled in zone No. 2, has discovered between 5205 and 5297 ft., the dcepest pool yct found in this field. The oil production in Bahrein for the year 1939 totaled 7,588,554 bbl., a decline of 709,444 bbl. from the 1939 production of 8,297,998 bbl. The production for the first seven months of 1939 remained fairly constant, the daily average by months during this period ranging between 20,000 and 22,000 bbl. per day. The daily average rose in August to the year's high of 23,800 bbl. per day, then dropped gradually to the year's low of 18,787 bbl. per day for November. The daily average for the year was 20,791 bbl. At the end of 1939 there were 59 wells producing and 8 wells drilling.
