Predicting ground motion from complicated mining explosions is important for mines developing blasting programs in regions where vibrations must be kept below certain levels. Additionally, predicting ground motion from explosions in complex 3D media is important for source size estimation for nuclear treaty monitoring. Both problems have been addressed under the development of a new series of programs including: 1) Generalized Fourier Methods to generate synthetic seismograms (Green’s functions) in 3D media for a moment tensor source implementation and 2) MineSeis3D, a program that simulates seismograms for delay-fired mining explosions with a linear relationship between signals from small size individual shots. To test the programs, three-component seismic recordings of three production shots at an iron mine in northern Minnesota were compared to synthetic waveforms in 3D media. Comparison of the observed and synthetic waveforms shows promising results. The shape and arrival times of the normalized synthetic and observed waveforms are similar for most of the stations. The synthetic and observed waveform amplitude fit is best for the vertical components in the mean 3D model but not as promising for the transversal components. The observed effect of spall on the waveform spectra was weak in the case of fragmentation delay-fired mining explosions. Commercial applications of the code could provide data needed for designing explosions that do not exceed ground vibration requirements posed by the United States Department of Interior, Office of Surface Mining.

Deep tunnels have been used for decades for the temporary storage of large volumes of urban runoff, both storm water and combined sewer overflow (CSO). Tunnels are attractive because they reduce surface disruption and do double duty as storage and conveyance systems, collecting overflows from multiple locations and transporting them for treatment to various facilities. Like any hydraulic system, however, there are dynamic effects that must be fully understood during the design phase so that the final constructed product does not have unintended negative consequences. Preliminary sizing of storage tunnels is typically based on the total volume required. For example, if studies have determined that a volume of 56.8 ML (15 million gal) will provide the intended level of control, then that figure can be used, along with a preliminary idea of the desired tunnel length, to compute the required diameter. Of course, filling a long tube with water from various points along the way is not at all the same as pouring water into a bucket, and these dynamic effects require additional attention from design engineers. The rapid filling of storage tunnels can lead to the formation of bores, which are essentially moving walls of water. An open channel bore can build in height until it reaches the crown of the tunnel, at which point it becomes a pipe-filling bore. Figure 1 depicts both kinds of bores moving upwards in a rapidly filling tunnel. Bores can strike the ends of tun-nels with tremendous force, driving water and entrained air upwards into dropshafts and creating strong pressure surges in portions of the tunnel that are already filled. If the hydraulic surges are high enough to reach grade, they can cause overflows and/or damage structures at the surface. Trapped air pockets can occur through several phenomena, including the reflection of bores off dropshaft structures and the occurrence of ?premature pressurization.? The latter refers to the situation where the inflow to a tunnel is increasing more rapidly than the tunnel can convey it, such that the pipe becomes surcharged at an upstream point while points downstream are still flowing as an open channel. These air pockets are a great nuisance as they migrate toward points in the tunnel where they can rise to the surface, which are often shafts that are already filled with water (Fig. 2). The ?geyersing? that results can be hazardous and costly.

A thermal plasma process was used to synthesize nanosized tungsten carbide -cobalt composite powder, in which ammonium paratungstate and cobalt oxide were reacted with a gas mixture containing CH4, H2 and Ar. The reduction and carburization of vaporized precursors produced nanosized tungsten carbide (WC1-x) - cobalt composite powder, which sometimes contained small amounts of W2C and/or W phase. The effects of gas composition, plasma torch power, and the flow rate of plasma gas on the product composition and grain size were investigated. The grain size of synthesized tungsten carbide powder was less than 20 nm. The synthesized composite powders were also subjected to a hydrogen heat treatment to fully carburize WC1-x, W2C, and W phases to the WC phase as well as to remove excess carbon in the product. Finally nanosized WC-Co composite powder of grain size less than 50 nm was obtained.

Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. In case of a damage the blisk aerofoils cannot be simply replaced. If the damage is beyond acceptance or blending limits refurbishment is possible only by scrapping the whole blisk assembly, or more cost effective by the application of advanced weld repair methods. Weld repair of blisk aerofoils is challenging as it affects a critical part with specific requirements regarding its mechanical integrity, and as the accessibility is usually limited. The paper describes the ongoing development of advanced weld repair processes as part of a comprehensive repair strategy which have been developed for small-sized blisk assembly to give competitive maintenance cost.

The fact that coal is a complex organic material and heterogeneous in composition has made its study extremely difficult, particularly in regard to obtaining a fundamental concept of the processes involved in the formation of coke. It has been stated recently that coals are natural polymers and that in a complex reaction such as occurs during carbonization the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. Such being the case, it would be expected, therefore, that a series of coals subjected to exactly the same conditions of coking would produce results that should be related quantitatively to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. In the past, however, this fact was not generally recognized and consequently many empirical test methods were devised for testing coals. The interpretation of the results obtained depended upon comparing a set of data with other data on coals of known characteristics. The testing procedure had to be con- ducted in precisely the same manner each time and not the least requirement in making the interpretation was experience. The test methods varied from those utilizing a gram of coal to the plant-scale tests in which one or more ovens were charged with the test coal. The aim had been principally to find some simple, inexpensive means by which the coke-making and other properties of coal could be predicted. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of these endeavors, for anyone acquainted with the problems involved in the selection of coals for making coke is well aware of the time and expense involved in making a series of definitive tests.

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project is one of the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) largest projects, and is currently under construction. This case study will focus on the design of the foundation piles for the main spans of the iconic Frederick Douglass Memorial (FDM) Bridge, and will include a discussion of the foundation design evolution from an originally designed alternative foundation system (i.e. coffer dams and drilled shafts), to the current use of driven Large Diameter Open End Pipe (LDOEP) Piles. The paper will provide a discussion of the design methodology used during preliminary engineering and final design, and will highlight insight gained from the extensive load testing program completed to date. The load testing program consists of a combination of high strain dynamic testing (PDA), as well as Statnamic Load Testing on select sacrificial, pre-production test piles. Specifically, data gathered during the nearly-completed load testing program suggests the development of significant internal shaft frictional resistance within the tested LDOEP Piles. This paper will also discuss limitations of currently accepted industry design methods for predicting the capacity of LDOEP piles, a subject that is also currently being researched by FHWA. The data from this test pile program will help design assumptions for future projects. INTRODUCTION The Frederick Douglass Memorial (FDM) Bridge carries South Capitol Street across the Anacostia River in Southeast/Southwest, Washington, DC, and is owned and maintained by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). The existing FDM Bridge is nearly 70 years old, serves as a major artery into the city, and has been classified as functionally obsolete. As a result of the condition, age and limitations of the existing bridge structure, DDOT deemed it necessary for complete replacement of the bridge. The replacement project consists of the construction of a new bridge traversing the Anacostia River, as well as the reconfiguration of the Suitland Parkway and I-295 interchanges located at the eastern terminus of the FDM Bridge. Final design and construction services for the replacement project were procured by DDOT through a Design-Build contract. This paper will focus on the driven Large Diameter Open End Pipe (LDOEP) Piles used for support of the main span of the new FDM Bridge which is currently under construction. Discussion regarding the LDOEP Pile design methodology has been included, along with commentary regarding currently available industry guidance related to design and construction of LDOEP Piles. Much insight has been gained during the mostly-completed and extensive load testing program which consists of a combination of high strain dynamic testing (PDA), as well as Statnamic Load Testing on select sacrificial, pre- production test piles. This circular presents results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines to ascertain the extent to which dust-control practices are employed in the coal-mining industry. This survey was initiated because of increasing realization of the possible harmful effects of the inhalation of dust upon the health of coal-mine workers and the advent, during recent years, of new types of mining machinery and new mining methods that may have a direct effect upon the extent of exposure to airborne dust experienced by persons mining coal. Anthracite Mines The survey covered 169 anthracite mines that were operating from November 1, 1953, to July 1, 1954. It showed that large mines employing more than 100 men were doing most to control dust produced during mining.

As the problem of inclusions in steel has become increasingly important, more and more attention has been paid to the source of the oxide inclusions in steel. In killed steels the oxide inclusions are traceable to the reaction of deoxidizers with the iron oxide dissolved in the steel during the refining period of the open-hearth heat. In a large class of steel known as "rimming steel" the action of the steel during solidification depends entirely on the gas evolved, and this evolution in turn is controlled by the amount of iron oxide in the liquid steel in the mold. It is therefore of great importance to be able to determine the amount of iron oxide dissolved in steel and to devise methods for the control of iron oxide in any class of steel. The object of the present investigation was to obtain a true value of the oxygen content of liquid steel. If the steel has not been deoxidized, the greater percentage of the oxygen is present as iron oxide in solution.

It is difficult co know how to deal with this subject before a group having such mixed interests. The mining man is not coo concerned with the problems of alloy research. The engineer is more interested in properties of materials than how these properties can be achieved. The business man feels that scientific history and prognostication are not for him, predicting trends or possible developments in the economic field being a more than sufficient occupation. Yet the application of physical metallurgy research to industry is of importance to miner, engineer, and business man, for only through such application can the continuing existence of industries manufacturing or consuming metals be assured. History shows that hard work does not guarantee industrial survival. For instance, the Bessemer method of steel making superseded puddling operations; it, in its turn, has been largely displaced by open-hearth processing; later, steels made in electric-arc furnaces displaced open-hearth products in the quality field; and now, very specialized steels are being made in high-frequency rather than in arc furnaces. It is apparent then, if industry is co remain healthy, complacency must give way co imaginative planning, based on a thorough knowledge of production technique, a knowledge supplied by efficient research.

Tests to increase knowledge concerning the process of hydraulic fracturing have been performed on three wells in the Allegheny field in western New York. The fracture orientation and its physical appearance at the well-bore was determined by impression packers run at appropriate times throughout the program. Fract~tre azi171uth and its dimensions thus determined were compared to the rock properties and treatment conditions. Logs to provide data concerning rock properties and to improve identification of vertical fractures were run before each step of the fracture treatment. Pressure osc~illu~iot~s were studied after each phase of tile treatments surface pressures during treatment. These measurements show that subsurface pressures exhibit many of the same characteristics as surface pressures during treatment of a well; however, transient pressures are dampened and deelayed in time at the bottom of the well when COmpared with surface pressures. Data obtained from this study provides a means to help locale and determine orientation of vertical fractures made in the open wellbore. Although these rests were performed in only one area, much of the information gained may be applied to fracturing programs in orher areas. INTRODUCTION In this study, various tests were made to provide data to better understand formation fracturing in situ. The reservoir studied is the Richburg oil sand which is a part of a series of predominantly grey sandstones and shales with occasional brown sandstone layers, known as the Caneadea unit of the Canadaway group of Upper Devonian age. Average physical characteristics of 12 cored wells in this area are 13-ft thick gross sand formation, 12-ft thick net sand. 1.7 md permeability, 11 percent porosity, 44 percent oil saturation (before secondary recovery) and 16 percent water saturation (before secondary recovery). This particular area of the Allegheny oil field was originally drilled prior to 1890. The first waterflood secondary recovery attempt was made in 1929. The present sustained waterflood development began in 1951 and is being carried out on a 4.5 to 5-acre spacing. Objectives of these tests were to (I) study fracture azimuth and dimension in relation to rock properties and treating conditions, (2) improve fracture identification techniques, (3) compare surface and subsurface pressure during all phases of treatment and (4) compare the periods of the fluid column oscillations occurring after each phase of treatment. Although the areas of investigation listed appear divergent in purpose, the program was designed primarily to increase knowledge of down-hole conditions leading to rock failure and extension of the fracture thus created. TEST PROCEDURES Wells upon which tests were conducted are designated as Wells 1 through 3. Well 2 was located 440 ft north of Well 1, and Well 3 was located approximately 880 ft west of Well 1. Wells 1 and 2 were completed with cable tools, while the producing interval of Well 3 was rotary cored using fresh water as the drilling fluid to obtain oriented cores. Tests were divided into separate phases on each well as the fracturing program progressed and consisted of measurements performed prior to treatment, during and after the formation breakdown operation. during fracture treatment and after treatment. To verify location and azimuth of the fracture created, and to obtain an impression of wellbore irregularities, a packer was used (Fig. 1). This packer was lowered on tubing into the wellbore opposite the interval under study and inflated in stages to allow the impression material to conform to the wall of the wellbore. The concept of installing a steel sheet pile retaining wall into the ground by "pressing" has resulted in the development of various equipment solutions over the last thirty years e.g. Taylor Woodrow ?Pile Master', Giken 'Silent Piler" & Tosa 'Still Worker?. Dawson Construction Plant Ltd (DCP), have recently advanced the pile pressing concept with the introduction of their 'Push-Pull' system. This advancement offers significant improvements in the quality of installation compared with traditional pressing solutions but also greater versatility, higher productivity and, most importantly, generates new opportunities through a wider range of applications for "silent piling'. This paper will focus primarily on the use of the Push-Pull concept in the construction of a unique "integral" bridge in Milton Keynes, England. Finally, the paper touches on the development of quiet, vibration-less pile extraction equipment, which allows steel to be considered the foundation material of choice for truly sustainable construction. It is no longer acceptable to leave unwanted piles in the ground.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

The Federal coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has been criticized by those who say it goes too far in controlling the activity of private enterprise and by those who say it does not go far enough in eliminating fatalities and accidents in an accident prone industry. Possibly a better evaluation of this legislation lies somewhere in between. From the viewpoint of the coal industry it can be said that through the efforts of those engaged in mining, both the operator and the miner, the year 1969 marked a record year in mine safety with only 190 fatalities and a frequency of 0.84 per million man hours exposure. This outstanding achievement compared to any previous was the result of a determined effort on the part of a concerned industry to improve its reputation as being the most hazardous industry in the nation. After the effective date of the Act, March 31, 1970, the Bureau of Mines assumed complete control of all safety and health activities of the mining industry. Unfortunately, there was no improvement in the safety record of underground mines in 1970 with the total of 255 fatal injuries and a frequency of 1.04 for the year. The number of fatalities declined to 177 in 1971 but the number of underground coal mines had declined from 5,955 to 2,268 during the two year period. Meanwhile, surface mined coal increased from about 38% of total production in 1969 to over 50% in 1971, keeping the annual production of coal at a normal level but involving fewer men.

"FLAC3D is an important numerical analysis software to study dynamic response of rock slope. In application of the program, the common issues such as absorbing boundary and the method to apply wave have been well studied. However, effects of model mesh size, damping and width of slope are still unknown. In order to make the result more convictive, this article has discussed the above issues systematically. It found that when the maximum mesh size is smaller than 1/10~1/8 of the smallest wavelength, the mesh size is smaller, the computational accuracy is higher. Meanwhile, values of damping and width of slope have no effect on the result. Additional, results of FLAC3D modeling on wave transmission across rock joints agree well with analytical solutions, so it has verified the capability and accuracy of FLAC3D on dynamic response of rock slope.INTRODUCTIONChina is a mountainous country accompanied with many earthquakes. Thousands of geological disasters are triggered by the Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan Province, and the majority of the disasters are landslides induced (Xu et al., 2009). Meanwhile, the paper (Li et al., 2003) points out five significant issues about dynamic loading in the area of geotechnical engineering, which includes the study of rock slope stability under earthquakes, and the dynamic response of rock slopes is one of its important study issues."

This report describes a Bureau of Mines study undertaken to determine the applications and limitations of solution techniques as a general method of fluorescent X-ray spectrographic analysis. Systematic errors due to variations in particle size, surface preparation, and sample inhomogeneity are eliminated by the use of solutions. The range of applicability of fluorescent X-ray spectrography is increased in two ways: (1) Samples in the form of wire, filings, turnings, etc., can be analyzed as solutions, and (2) samples submitted as solutions can be analyzed as received 0 The lower limit of detectability varies from 0.14 gram per liter for sulfur, atomic number 16, to 0.0015 gram per liter for strontium, atomic number 38. Most elements have limits of detectability between 0.02 and 0.002 gram per liter.

THE art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being-as far as natural-gas service is concerned-of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company-considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company-the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. Cathode stripping machine technology has been developed significantly both in electrorefining (ER) and electrowinning (EW) applications in the last ten years. The main driver has been robotic cathode handling, which has enabled increased flexibility to meet different layout and material handling requirements for both ER and EW processes. Additionally, cathode stripping stations have been continuously developed to optimize speed and to reduce mechanical stress of permanent cathodes. 'taco' type cathodes have been proven as beneficial approach for high capacity operations (particularly in Cu ER), where over 600 cathodes per hour continuous throughput has been achieved. However, the latest developments also apply to split type cathode stripping. Besides material handling, the modern cathode stripping machine has also an important role to provide information for production and quality monitoring. This paper describes the latest developments from the field of copper cathode stripping based on several different projects implemented in the recent years. INTRODUCTION After introduction of the permanent cathode technology in the late 1970s, it became the prevailing technology in copper refineries over the traditional starting sheet process by the end of 1980s. The main driver was less labour-intensive production due to fewer processing steps required along with more automated electrode handling equipment (cathode stripping machine, anode preparation machine, anode scrap washing machine and tankhouse cranes). Since then the design of the cathode stripping machine has followed the development of permanent cathode technology. The main development steps so far can be summarized as follows: Full Deposit Stripping Machine (FDSM) based on waxed permanent cathodes or cathodes with bottom edge strips resulting in split cathodes (copper sheets separated, see Figure 1) Wax less cathode stripping based on V-groove on bottom of the edge strip resulting in either ‘taco’ cathodes (enveloped copper sheets, see Figure 1) or split cathodes Full Deposit Robotic Stripping Machines (FDRSM) using 1–5 robots for permanent cathode handling and cathode stacking.

"This paper analyzes the present state of the different processes competing to keep their market shares within the future iron and steel business sector.The continuous transformations in the steel making process are also studied here. These transformations have happened especially during the two last decades obviously favouring steel price, properties, quality and environmental compatibility in the new millennium. IntroductionIn the early 1980s, world steel production reached a historic figure; specifically in 1982, the amount was 645 Mt (Verdeja et al., 1993). This might have been one of the reasons why the United States, Japan and the European Community drew up a declaration of principles after which the leading industries and sectors in the following century’s development would be: advanced materials, also known by the very diffuse term of new materials; information technologies; and biotechnology (Eager, 1998).On the threshold of the 21st century, it can be inferred that information technologies (computers and telecommunications) have progressed spectacularly. Nevertheless, there have been downsides too; technology develops so quickly that after a few months the products are obsolete. Environmental problems may also appear in a few years due to storing so many useless devices.
