This paper describes the investigative studies carried out at Vale´s Center of Mineral Development (CDM) for a nickel sulfide deposit aiming to develop an adequate flotation flowsheet. The CDM facilities comprises of very well equipped laboratories to develop hydrometallurgical, comminution, flotation, physical separation processes, besides chemical and mineralogical laboratories, that are required to accomplish pre-feasibility studies, new process routes developments and, eventually, brownfield projects. Close association of the flotation group with the geometallurgy and the mineralogy teams play a key role during greenfield project development. Most of the information required by process engineers responsible for the flowsheet development can be provided by the mineralogy team and its mineralogical laboratory at CDM. During the flowsheet development of this nickel sulfide deposit, two ore types were identified as the most abundant in the deposit, named biotite-chlorite hydrothermalite (HID) and magnetite hydrothermalite (MAG HID). Six samples were selected for the investigative studies based on this initial information. Nickel grade varied from 0.39% to 1.95%. The main nickel-bearing minerals were millerite and pentlandite whereas the main non-sulphide gangue minerals were quartz, plagioclase, biotite, chlorite, actinolite, and/or magnetite. Electron microprobe (EMP) identified the presence of nickel in solid solution in gangue minerals such as biotite, chlorite, and actinolite. Nickel deportment in silicates varied from 3% to almost 40%. Magnesium was distributed in biotite and chlorite, except in sample MAG HID, in which talc was responsible for almost 50% of the Mg content. Liberation studies indicated that the optimum feed grind size was around 150µm and that pyrite occurred highly associated to the nickel sulfides. The flotation tests were planned based on the information provided by the mineralogical data. Rougher flotation tests indicated that the optimum P80 of the primary grind was 212µm for the HID type and 150µm for the MAG HID. From the reagents tested, amyl xanthate proved to be the most efficient in the recovery of the sulfides. In the MAG HID sample talc was well depressed by dosing 600g/t of CMC. Nickel recoveries in the rougher stage were lower than 90% due to the nickel distributed in silicates. However, sulfur recovery was around 95%, indicating high recovery of the total sulfides. Open circuit and locked cycle tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of the regrind size in the nickel grade and recovery (P80 of 44µm and 20µm). Nickel recovery decreased from 70% to 65% when finer regrind size was tested. Although nickel recovery decreased by 5%, the finer regrind size lead to a higher Ni grade (from 11% to 23%Ni) and lower fluorine grade (from 1138ppm to 700ppm) in the concentrate. "The geomechanical behavior of rocksalt shows very distinctive features. The response of this most ductile of all low porosity rocks is dominated by inelastic processes that are strongly time- and historydependent. These characteristics must be taken into account when analyzing underground openings. Different constitutive models have been proposed and used for this purpose, and this paper presents the general formulation and applications of one of these. The SUVIC model relies on a unified approach with internal state variables producing mixed hardening to represent the inelastic behavior, which lead to specific solutions for plasticity and creep. The model equations have been implemented into a finite element code to perform numerical analyses. Simulations results are presented to show that this model captures essential aspects of rocksalt behavior under simple and complex laboratory testing conditions. Simulations are also conducted to analyze the response of underground openings. INTRODUCTIONPredicting the response of man-made excavations in rocksalt can be quite a challenge as it requires a reliable constitutive model to represent the material behavior. This softest of all low porosity rocks shows a highly non-linear inelastic behavior, very sensitive to history and rate effects (e.g. Senseny et al., 1993; Cristescu & Hunsche, 1997; Julien, 1999; Wittdke, 2014). The many deformation (micro) mechanisms acting locally in rocksalt make the construction of appropriate constitutive equations quite complex. Nonetheless, there have been significant progresses made over the last two decades or so; many of these developments have been included in a series of specialized Conferences Proceedings (Ghoreychi et al., 1996; Aubertin & Hardy, 1998; Cristescu et al., 2002; Wallner et al., 2007; Bérest et al., 2012)."

Geology is frequently complicated, hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitching and usually soft or well-cleated. Due to competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines are operating, McIntyre and B.C. Coal. Several other mines are being planned, the method being evenly divided between hydraulic, longwall, and room and pillar. McIntyre mines in the flat part of their formation (up to 20 degrees) uses continuous miners and shuttle cars in the 3m and 6m seams. This company is considering a retreating longwall face. B.C. Coal operates a hydraulic mine in a 16m thick seam dipping at 10 to 55 degrees with a productivity of about 20 tonnes per manshift.

Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

As part of a comprehensive investigation of tae mechanism of desulfurization of iron and steel by slags, the Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of :lines, in cooperation with the Institute of Technology., University of Minnesota, has made a study of the forms in which sulfur occurs in blast-furnace slag. This report presents data on the three sulfides most important in iron smelting, namely, ferrous sulfide, manganous sulfide, and calcium sulfide. The tendency of these sulfides to form colloids in the molten slag was determined by an examination of quenched samples with an ultramicroscope. Vogt5/ conducted experiments on sulfide silicate melts and examined synthetic blast-furnace slags in a partly crystallized condition. His conclusions were that FeS, CaS, and MnS, or isomorphous compounds, such as (FeXCay)S and (MnxCay)S, were precipitated from the melt, depending on the composition of the slag. In all specimens sulfides were visible and were spherical.

Mr. D. H. BRowne's paper upon " The Distribution of Phosphorus in the Ludington Mine" (Trans., xvii., 616) has interested me very much, and perhaps I cannot give a better proof of that, interest than an account of my work and observations in the same direction while chemist of the Hudson River Ore and Iron Company. The ores of this company lie in a chain of low hills running northwest and southeast, about three miles back from the eastern bank of the Hudson river, below Hudson, N. Y. They occur in thick veins, with the characteristic Hudson river slate formation as hangingrock and foot-wall, and dip about 45' east, outcropping in many places near the top of the western slopes.

Overloaded blastholes and insufficient stemming are major factors in flyrock accidents at surface metal and non-metal mines, Accurate measurement of blasthole depth, stemming height, and water depth would reduce the overload and the probability of blow-out, flyrock, excessive ground vibration, and airblast. Problems result because current measuring systems are inaccurate and often difficult to used A literature survey determined measurement techniques and blasting parameters prior to 1970. Similar data were gathered for current practices in 11 iron mines, 30 copper mines, and 92 quarries. Most operations used a cloth tape to measure borehole depth and stemming height; approximately 10% of the operations had dry blastholes. Alternate measurement techniques were evaluated and discussed. Candidate measuring techniques with best potential for improvement over the present weighted tape method are disposable tapes or string chains, automated readout tapes, modified sludge level indicators and acoustic resonance methods.

Sm-Co alloy is a kind of magnetic material with high power and has been applied in modern industry widely. In this study, the wet chemical co-precipitation was developed for synthesis of the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor. The thermodynamic analysis of the studied system was done to clarify the solution behavior theoretically based on the thermodynamic equilibrium and simultaneous equilibrium. Then, the experiments were done to address the various effects on the wet chemical process, including solution pH, reactant concentration, dispersant, reaction temperature and time, etc. It is found that by precise control of the process, the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor was synthesized with fine crystallization and special size & size distribution.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize and discuss a variety of site specific conditions which are typically evaluated as part of the engineering design process for heap leach pads, solution control ponds, and associated facilities. The following sections will focus primarily on the topographic, climatologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical evaluations critical to selection of heap leach sites, and selection of a preferred heap leach configuration or method. Other important considerations in the design of a heap leach project, including evaluation of ore properties and leachability, pregnant solution processing requirements, spent ore neutralization/disposal requirements, and other anticipated reclamation requirements are beyond the scope of this paper are not addressed in any detail.

"Upon successful completion of the AG/SAG Mill project (Cooper et al., 2001) the Brunswick Mine concentrator was configured with single line processing through the AG/SAG mill, followed by two parallel ball mill and flotation circuits. The Stage Grinding project was undertaken to utilize a pre-flotation stage on the AG/SAG mill primary cyclone overflow and simplify the flowsheet by consolidating the two ball mill and flotation circuits, resulting in single line processing fi-om AG/SAG mill to final concentrate. Concurrently, the reclaim water supply capacity was increased to enable flotation cleaning at lower percent solids.Benefits from the Stage Grinding project include revenue enhancement from increased zinc grade and recovery combined with additional lead recovery. Further benefits included a reduction in the number of process pumps, reduction in loss associated with spillage to sumps and process simplification through efficient use of equipment layout.The Stage Grinding project was implemented in six phases over a period of seven months in 2000. Each phase was commissioned during scheduled concentrator shopdays with minimal additional downtime required. One year after project approval the Stage Grinding project was completed at a total cost of $1 1.8 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s largest leadzinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore fkom the No. 6 open pit located several kilometers away. In 1980 the pit was exhausted and the concentrator rationalized to accept a design feed rate of 10,500 tomes per day from the No. 12 mine. In excess of 100 million tomes have been milled to date, representing over three-quarters of the known reserve. The concentrator employs differential froth flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper and leauzinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

INTRODUCTION Background and Objectives Underground coal mining is a vital component of West Virginia's economy. However adverse environmental effects including ground subsidence and aquifer dewatering are often associated with such mining activities. Many families in northern West Virginia still rely on private water wells and springs for domestic water needs. In such areas where underground coal extraction and land subsidence have occurred, a disruption of the ground water flow system commonly exists with subsequent drainage of water to lower levels that may extent as deep as the mine workings; this causes loss of water supplies to landowners and represents a nuisance to mining companies 2 This report represents a summary of an M. S. thesis project in geology at West Virginia University by the senior author (3). The intent for this study was to document the effects of underground coal removal on ground water levels at selected mine sites in northern West Virginia, as observed from water wells, springs, and streams. This research should be useful to coal companies and regulatory agencies and aid in recommendations of future water well locations and specifications in areas of existing or proposed underground coal mines.

Rendering safe explosives in an urban environment presents a unique challenge due to the safety concerns and disruption to the general public. Potential damage to the surrounding homes, businesses, utilities and transportation infrastructure are some of the major concerns when planning the render-safe operation. Engineering controls to mitigate blast effects, such as damaging air over pressure levels, material ejection and ground borne vibration, need to be implemented as part of the operation. Monitoring of seismic and air overpressure during these operations are needed to protect against potential claims when controlled or unplanned detonations occur. Two recent render-safe operations conducted in and around urban environments dealt with deteriorated, sensitive dynamite and damaged blasting caps. Utilizing innovative neutralization chemicals and processes to render-safe the deteriorated dynamite, while protecting the general public, proved to be the safest, most environmentally responsible and cost-effective way to approach the problem. In both cases, the explosives, old dynamite and detonators were found in abandoned, unlocked magazines. The dynamite was in a significantly deteriorated state, which was evident due to the nitroglycerine found leaking in,around and under the dynamite cartridges. Iron wire permissible electric blasting caps were also found in a corroded condition with exposed explosives and un-shunted lead wires. With occupied buildings within 180 feet (54.86 meters) of the magazines, any procedure (e.g. transporting, countercharging, burning) that could potentially cause a detonation was not an option. In the event of an unplanned detonation during neutralization operations, several blast mitigation methods were employed to safeguard the site. This operation and a similar one with over 1,000 pounds of crushed and buried leaky dynamite were unique since all the explosives were rendered-safe and neutralized on site. The use of advanced neutralization products and filtering processes allowed for a safer, more environmentally responsible way to resolve the problem. The magazines and all residual solids and fluids were tested and confirmed by independent labs to have no explosives residues. The effluents were treated on site, tested and met safe levels, so they were disposed of at a local municipal wastewater facility.

A survey of the petroleum pipe lines by the Bureau of Mines as of May 1, 1923, shows that on that date there was a total of slightly more than 90,000 miles of pipe lines in the United States, having a capacity of approximately 15,750,000 barrels, which is equivalent to one-fourth of the nation's average production for one month. These lines varied in diameter from 2 to 16 inches, the weighted average being 6 inches. The total pipe-line milenge was about equally divided between trunk lines and gathering lines, though the capacity of the former was about four times that of the latter. This was due, of course, to the difference in average diameter, that for the former being 7.4 inches as compared with 3.7 inches for the latter. The common size for trunk lines was 8 inches, and for gathering lines 2 inches. Oklahora, with 19,180 miles of pipe lines, is the leading State in total mileage, with Texas second and Pennsylvania third. From point of trunk lines alone Texas is considerably ahead of any of the other States, a position which it owes to its size and to the growth in the rovement to its Gulf ports. Cali- fornia, though the leading State from point of production, ranks only seventh in pipe-line mileage. This is due to the fortunate location of the Los Angeles Basin fields, some of which are within sight of the refineries to which their oil is delivered or of the port of San Pedro through which their oil is shipped. The last survey of this nature, made in the spring of 1924 by the U. S. Geological Survey, recorded a total mileage of nearly 83,000 with a capacity of approximately 14,450,000 barrels. This indicates an increase of 9 per cent in both mileage and capacity during the two years.

The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite, Fe1 _1J S was studied experimentally in the temperature range 200°C to 760°C. Nickel from both aqueous solutions and salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphidelattice with an accompanying release of iron into the solution or melt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion into the sulphide lattice were followed by optical microscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser. Some geological consequences of this phenomenon affecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associated with nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

Mining operations are continually aiming to reduce operating costs to improve plant profitability. One way in which the Cannington operation sought to achieve this was by increasing the wear life and reducing the energy consumption of their flotation mechanisms. This was made possible using Outotec’s FloatForce mechanism. The FloatForce mechanism has been developed by Outotec over a six year period involving both CFD modelling and rigorous site testing. FloatForce delivers improved air dispersion and cell agitation efficiency; as such it can be operated at lower rotor tip speeds when compared to Outotec’s previous mechanism.Cannington trialled three FloatForce mechanisms in a train of ten OK38 zinc roughers. The mechanisms’ rotational speed was reduced by 10% compared to the previously installed MultiMix mechanisms. The purpose of the trial was to quantify the energy saving and assess whether there was any reduction in plant metallurgical performance.The trial was successful with FloatForce delivering a 17% reduction in power, an improvement in wear and improved recovery. Analysis of pre and post-installation metallurgical accounting data showed the following:The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of zinc to zinc final concentrate of 0.4 – 4.0%*The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of lead to zinc final concentrate of 0.0 – 0.3%*There was no statistically significant change in silver recovery to zinc final concentrate that can be attributed to FloatForce**95% confidence interval (CI) using multiple linear regression models.The Cannington operation is now in the process of further optimizing its power consumption and wear savings by changing the remaining OK38 zinc and lead rougher float cells to FloatForce mechanisms.CITATION:Bird, M, Oats, B and Sganzerla, M, 2015. The amphibolite-facies metabasaltic rocks of the Mine Mafic Package at Plutonic Gold Mine, Marymia Inlier, Western Australia, contain an estimated total endowment of 12.2 Moz of Au, which includes 4.71 Moz of past production and 2.77 Moz of reserves and resources; the remainder comprises lower-grade inventory. Over 65?000 multi-element analyses of whole-rock core and face channel samples from the underground workings of the deposit have been collected by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) using a handheld Innov-X Omega pXRF unit. The analyses were performed on pulverised samples through paper bags, and were corrected using a pulverised, matrix-matched, reference standard. This method of data correction compares favourably with conventional XRF analyses performed on the same samples.A preliminary study based on pXRF analyses from a small number of drill holes found that a geochemical stratigraphy was evident in the pXRF data, and that this stratigraphy strongly controlled the location of Au mineralisation. The present study incorporates a much larger pXRF data set that samples a greater volume of diamond drill core and face channel samples and presents the data in a three-dimensional (3D) framework.This data set allows an investigation of the mineralogy of Au mineralisation with varying geochemical associations across the deposit. Historically, there has been a strong relationship identified between As and Au, which has caused issues with metallurgical performance, rendering some areas of the deposit only marginally economic. Utilising seamless data integration of the pXRF data set allows for recognition of the different styles of Au mineralisation using elemental concentrations and ratios from the multi-element analyses (Au:As, Au:As:Cu, As:Cu vs. K:V), and to visualise the distribution of these different mineralogical associations in 3D. The results of the 3D modelling and geochemical characterisation of the different styles of Au mineralisation are currently the focus of an extensive metallurgical testing program, the preliminary results of which are presented here.

"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northest of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The present paper will describe the methodology used to successfully prove that gold of the Detour Lake Mine ore is mostly concentrated into the fine size fraction of the blasted rocks. It will describe the various options possible to create value from this ore property.IntroductionThe purpose of this test work was to determine the grade of the pebbles and consider if there was value into discarding the pebbles and replacing the material by fresh feed.1. Pebble samplingThe pebbles were sampled and assayed for grade every day for 3 months. After 3 months of sampling, the results showed that the pebbles only carried 28% of the fresh feed grade. This phenomenon can possibly be explained by the fact the gold is located into area of fracture in the rocks.January-March 2014 – Pebble assay average• Line #1 = 0.222 g. Au/t• Line#2 = 0.275 g. Au/t• Head grade = 0.88 g. Au/t2. Crushing and grinding circuit surveysWith the above information, a grinding circuit survey was planned. The purpose of the survey was to build a JKSIMMET model of the grinding circuit for mill optimization but also to understand the deportment of gold into various size fractions that may explain why there is so little gold in the pebbles. All streams and size fractions was analysed for particle size analysis and for gold.Since Detour has dual grinding lines, both circuits were sample at the end of May. Two supplemental survey of the secondary crushers were also done and a survey of the gyratory crusher."

"The ore features of Mongolian fluorspar deposits are shown in the paper. The possibilities of the technological of ore processing on the Bor-Undur combine scheme improvement are analyzed there. PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

Mining legislation in Jamaica dates back to only 1947 when, on August 30 of that year the Minerals (Vesting) Act was promulgated. None of the exploratory and trial-mining projects over the preceding 450 years were regulated or controlled by law. It was the seriousness of the intent of the North American Aluminum Companies to establish a bauxite mining industry in Jamaica which led to the development of the first piece of mineral legislation. It is of note that the incoming mineral industrialist was more anxious than the Government to see that a legislative framework was in place. It was relevant then as it is today for good mining legislation to be in place for the Government to regulate and control the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources. It was also necessary for the industry to know their rights and obligations so that they could plan, explore and exploit with some assurance that their capital was secure. One of the main reasons that the mining of bauxite did not begin in Jamaica until 1952 was that no legislational framework existed prior to 1947. The Jamaican dollar is tied to the US Dollar at a rate of J$35.00 to US$1.
