This is the final report of work done under contract H0210060 for the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. This program was to show the feasibility of using plastic liners containing sand and other fillers as a means of roof support in coal and other mines. This laboratory study was conducted in two phases, namely: Phase I, directed toward determining which state-of-the-art resin systems might have utility as a means of roof support in a coal mine, consisted of a canvass of resin manufacturers to learn which resins were available commercially that might have utility for this application. The resins submitted by the manufacturers were evaluated in a number of simple tests to define which of them would be most suitable for roof support use.

The occurrences of manganese In Alabama were reported to be widely scattered over the northeastern section of the State, and these were examined before a development project was started.2/ The most promising and available showings were chosen for further investigation, which include 1 deposit in Goshen Valley, 6 in the Rock Run area, and 2 in the northern section of Calhoun County. The work was performed by the Bureau of Mines from July 29, 1949, to February 17, 1950. The work consisted of power auger drilling 69 holes 3-1/2 inches in diameter and totaling 2,548.4 linear feet. The accuracy of samples from auger drill holes in this type of deposit was determined by sinking two shafts a total depth of 68.17 feet, from which channel samples were cut. Sixteen rotary core holes totaling 1,048.7 linear feet were drilled with a 3-inch, double-tube core barrel. Twenty-two diamond core holes were drilled with a 2-1/8-inch, double-tube core barrel and NX diamond bit. In addition to the above drilling 220.8 cubic yards of soil and rock was excavated by hand from 403.9 linear feet of trenches and 69.7 feet of test pita. A total of 206 samples were taken and analyzed for manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, and insoluble.

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. During an underground mine fire, air can be rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases. Any delay in warning miners could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine fire alarm systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in mine area coverage. Recent research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that ultra low frequency electromagnetic signaling can be used for an underground mine fire alarm. In field tests of prototype equipment at five mines, electromagnetic signals from 630 to 2,000 Hz were transmitted through mine rock for distances as great as 1,645 m to an intrinsically safe receiver. The prototype system uses off-the-shelf components and state-of-the-art technology to insure high reliability and low cost. When utilized, this. technology would enable simultaneous and instantaneous warning of all underground personnel, regardless of their location or work activity, thereby increasing the likelihood of their successfully escaping a mine disaster. This report presents the theoretical basis for through-the-rock ultra low frequency electromagnetic transmission, design of the prototype transmitter and receiver, and the results of in-mine tests of the prototype system.

Statistical frequency distributions may be used to characterize the overall variation of grade in orebodies. Special types of distribution (e.g. lognormal, log-type A) are necessary to describe skewness inthe case of rare metals. Also needed (but for the most part hitherto neglected) is the serial correlation function which describes the tendency for grades near together in an orebody to be closer together than grades at points relatively far apart.The sampling problem for orebodies is interpreted in statistical terms. Different methods are reviewed, and the effect of serial correlation discussed.A discussion is given, based on experiments and observations made by the author, of biases arising in the minei:l material by such methods as chip sampling and grab sampling due to such causes as nonrepresentative selection by the sampler.INTRODUCTIONMiners have always recognized the large element of chance in their operations. Chance is the raw material of statistical theory and, provided there is some recognizable pattern or underlying regularity in a set of data arising from the operation of chance events, statisticians are able to formulate mathematical models to study them. Mining engineers, geologists, and statisticians have gone a long way between them towards finding general statistical rules which describe the distribution of minerals and metals in orebodies, and even the distribution of orebodies over the earth's surface.These rules do not have the force of physical laws, though they obviously derive from them and have been used to throw light on them. The MBS Solvent Extraction System utilises a unique design of mixer- settler having very high capacity per unit area and great flexibility. The development of the mixer-settler is traced through its various stages wherein the independence of mixing and pumping, reduction in settler area requirements and simplicity of plant layout were achieved. The laboratory, pilot plant and full scale tests contributing to the development of the machine are described. The existing KREBS SX plants in Europe and Africa are described as well as the plants presently under design. Results of recent testwork are also given.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risk of slope failure inherent in steeper slope angles. This paper describes the results of a case study in which a newly developed probabilistic economic analysis procedure was applied to the selection of a pit slope design at a large porphyry copper mine in the southwestern U.S. The paper also demonstrates the availability of the required data such as the probability of failure schedule and cost of failure models, under "real-life" conditions.

Hydrometallurgical products are difficult to characterize because of their fine grain sizes, heterogeneity, often amorphous structures and water soluble or hydrated constituents. Such products are advantageously studied using complementary mineralogical techniques including >50, ore microscopy, SEM-EDX, electron microprobe analysis, selective leaching and wet chemical analysis to determine the phases and their morphologies, to identify specific element carriers, and to elucidate the chemical reactions occurring during the metallurgical process. Sample preparation is an important consideration for these materials. For extremely fine-grained particles, or soft and brittle products such as elemental sulphur, the study of loose powder mounts provides information not available from the examination of polished sections. To demonstrate the application of the various mineralogical techniques, commercial zinc roaster calcines and leach residues, copper refinery anodes and anode slimes, and laboratory bornite leach residues were examined in detail. The various sample preparation and mineralogical methods are presented, and the use of these complementary and practical mineralogical techniques to improve the understanding of a particular hydrometallurgical system is discussed.

Most of the projects summarized in this paper are funded under the Bureau's Advancing Metal-Nonmetal Mining Technology program and are part of the in situ mining subprogram coordinated at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center. The borehole mining equipment development, are funded under the Bureau's Advancing Coal Mining Technology program, is essential to accelerated progress in the in situ mining subprogram, and some background information on this concept is included. The initial in situ research projects started in 1971-72 evaluated some of the critical blast design parameters for in situ copper leaching. The present program totals about $1 million per year and includes in-house research projects, cooperative (cost-sharing) projects with the mining industry, and research and development contracts. Two different extraction schemes are under investigation: inplace leaching and borehole (or slurry) mining. The principal commodity targets for the Bureau's improved in situ mining technologies include copper, uranium, coal, and potash. The principal purpose of this paper is to inform the mining industry of the in situ mining research recently completed or being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. In addition the Bureau encourages companies to comment on the program accomplishments as well as offer suggestions on top priority research needs for improving the in situ mining methods described in this paper.

Single crystals qf copper in "single slip" orientatiorzs have been deformed in compression. During defortnation all of the independent deformation parameters have been measured. These parameters consist of thefive strain components and three components descrihing the lattice rotation. By a finite strain analysis these pararmeters , forrming a deformation gradient martrix, are related to the amounts of slip on each of the twelve slip systems. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is about equal to the amount of primary slip. This is an order of magnitude larger than has been believed previoutsly. ACCORDING to early theory and experiments, when a single crystal of a fcc metal is deformed in tension or compression it should deform by slip on only one slip system until the stress axis reaches a symmetrical orientation.' However. the observation of a large increase in the secondary dislocation density during ..single slip" makes it clear that some slip does occur on secondary systems. Knowledge of the amount and distribution of this secondary slip is essential to a complete understanding of the mechanisms of single-crystal deformation. Ahlers and Haasen 2 and Mitchell and Thornton1 have tried to detect the amount of secondary slip in single crystals of silver and copper, respectively. Each simultaneously measured the angle A, between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and the length 1 of a gage section of the specimen after incremental amounts of deformation in tension. The measured A, was then compared with the theoretical single slip angle hp. given by sin Ap = j sin . hO where ?o was the initial angle between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and lo was the initial gage length. In both sets of experiments a small but systematic difference between ?e and ?p was found. This difference must be due to the occurrence of secondary slip. However, as Mitchell and Thornton1 pointed out. nothing quantitative can be said about the amount and distribution of this secondary slip from the measurements that they made. The reason that no quantitative conclusions could be made is because no unique solution for the distribution of slip on the twelve fcc slip systems can be determined from only two measured deformation parameters such as A and 1. There are, in fact, eight independent macroscopic deformation parameters that can be measured when a single crystal undergoes a homogeneous deformation. Physically these can be thought of as the five finite strain components and the three angles describing the crystal lattice rotation. All eight of these parameters were measured by Taylor4,5 for aluminum deformed in tension and compression. At that time the concern was to show that slip occurs on {111 (110) systems in fcc metals, and the mathematics were not available to determine what slip distributions were compatible with the measurements. In this paper the mathematics6,7 are developed that allow the slip distribution to be determined from these measurable macroscopic deformation parameters. The analysis is applied to the measurements of the strain and lattice rotation of copper single crystals deformed in compression. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is an order of magnitude larger than had previously been thought. Thermodynamic data has been obtained for oleate chemisorption at fluorite (CaF2) and calcite (CaCO3) surfaces using adsorption isotherms determined previously at room and elevated temperatures by in-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS). Linear regression analysis was used to statistically derive free energy data as a function of temperature assuming oleate chemisorption followed Langmuir-type adsorption. Enthalpy and entropy changes were subsequently ascertained from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and fundamental thermodynamic relationships. Essentially, no difference in the free energy of chemisorption at the two mineral surfaces was found; however, the differences in enthalpy and entropy values were significant. By comparison, the results showed that oleate chemisorption at fluorite surfaces was more extensive and more entropically driven due to more water being displaced. Results correlate well with values determined in the literature for other mineral collector systems. These findings help explain the greater hydrophobic character of fluorite than calcite in both the absence and presence of oleate.

Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

UNTIL recently, practically all geophysical prospecting in Australia was conducted by government departments, either by the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia or the New South Wales Department of Mines. At present, in addition, the Shell company is carrying out an extensive geophysical campaign in South West Queensland. The Northern Australia Survey has now been in operation for over six years, its work being carried out principally in the northern and central parts of Australia over an area of about a million square miles. At present this Survey is being brought to a conclusion but it appears certain that the geophysical section will be transferred to a Commonwealth Government department on a permanent basis. At present the officers of the Geophysical Section are preparing or have issued some 150 reports on their field work and also a special technical report on the geophysical practice of the Survey.

In overall aggregate, the world's mineral industry in 1987 experienced a more satisfactory year than in 1986, at least insofar as its performance could be assessed from traditional statistical indicators. Production, trade and consumption seemingly advanced in the case of the majority of commodities, and prices for a number of commodities advanced. It was by no means certain, however, whether 1987 investment in mineral industry ventures would top the levels of 1986, when, in the case of petroleum industry investment expenditures there had been a sharp decline, this in contrast to evidences of a slight upturn in steel industry investment. World crude mineral output value was estimated at more than $1,084 billion, and the value added by minerals industry processing of this material probably raised the total value of the industry's production from primary materials to more than $2,600 billion constant 1983 dollars. Less easy too assess was the value of mineral commodities moving in international trade, but with a resurgence in oil prices from the 1986 levels, an increase above the 1986 $500 billion mark seemed assured. There are no comprehensive aggregate statistics on mineral consumption comparable to those on production and trade, but quantitative growth recorded for most major commodities suggested a favorable trend, particularly when coupled with a general (though by no means universal) upturn in unit prices.

Polkowice region (Lower Silesia, Poland) is an area, where the copper mining activity started about 40 years ago and new technologies were applied. There are 3 underground mines, 3 processing plants, tailings pond (the biggest one in Europe), pipelines for flotation waste transport, railways. Although new technologies were applied during the copper ore exploitation, the environment in this area were polluted mostly by dust containing copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Estimated values of heavy metals in polluted soils were compared to the natural contents of this metals. The geochemical background for Polkowice area was defined. The pollution zones occur around mining facilities. Copper ore exploitation and processing is planned for the next 20-40 years depending on market situation. After mines and other facilities closing the most important problem will be sustainable development of this area. To evaluate the scope of revitalization activities the analysis of recent soil environment condition will be necessary as well as forecasts for pollution migration. Geostatistic methods used also in mining will be very helpful for this task.
