Several growth chamber and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the germination behavior of plant species on mine spoils and plant growth responses to nutrients on spoils and topsoils. Experiments were conducted to study the germination potential of some native and introduced species under various conditions. The seeds of green needlegrass, side oats grama, thickspike wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, birdsfoot trefoil and emerald crownvetch were less tolerant, whereas those of alkali sacaton. durar hard fescue, slender wheatgrass, yellow sweetclover and alfalfa were most tolerant to the sodic mine spoil conditions. Addition of leonardite improved the germination potential of some of the poor genninators. Slender wheatgrass and yellow sweetclover were used as test plants to study the fertility status and productivity potential of stockpiled topsoils and spoils collected from Center. Glenharold and South Beulah of North Dakota. The topsoils were neither saline nor sodic but low in N and P. The spoils were neutral to alkaline with SAIL of 12-32, EC of 1.8-5.5 mmhos/cm, Olsen&apos;s P< µ4g/g, and total N <0.07%. Application of N and P together to the topsoils increased the yield of wheatgrass and sweetclover by 88% and 70% of their respective maximum yields, whereas near maximum yields were obtained for both the species by the same treatments to the spoils. The average yields on topsoils were higher than the yields on spoils. The concentrations of major nutrients were higher in plants grown on topsoil, whereas the opposite was true with the concentrations of Mn, Zn, and Cu. Growth chamber experiments were also conducted to study the growth responses of alfalfa, oats and slender wheat grass by the application of Mn and Zn to a sodic coal mine spoil which was previously used for pot culture experiments. Significant growth responses to Mn and Zn were observed in alfalfa but not in oats or slender wheatgrass. Fertilizing the spoil with Mn along with NPK increased the yield of alfalfa to 85% and with Mn + Zn to 99%. Growth responses and plant composition results of this study confirm that the application of major nutrients to spoils can accentuate Zn and Mn deficiencies in some plants.

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. Mining and tunnelling share many commonalities (eg confined working environments, excavation equipment and processes), but of significance is an overarching commitment to provide safe work conditions and environments. This includes reducing exposure to hazardous airborne contaminants such as dust and fumes, in particular Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM), with methods that are environmentally sustainable. In mining, wet methods are common to suppress airborne contaminants, however these methods are reliant on water availability, can be less effective for respirable dust, can have implications for environmental water contamination and can increase maintenance on mining equipment. In contrast, the use of dust scrubbers that provide filtration of airborne contaminants are well established in the tunnelling industry and frequently used to provide spot extraction (dust control at the source) and act often as a complement to the main ventilation system. This paper sought to learn more about the advancements in tunnelling that could be readily applied to mining to improve health outcomes. The paper includes a review of literature and legislation related to health and sustainability and interviews with three respected, and experienced managers from the global tunnel construction industry. It is from these interviews that the focus of the paper turns to Sydney’s WestConnex underground tunnel network and the success of stage 3A M4-M5 construction link. The findings position dust scrubbers as integral to the overall project success as they enabled a Tunnel Production Line (TPL), where multiple stages of construction could take place simultaneously by controlling high volumes of dust at the source. The findings also suggest efficiencies of using mobile scrubbers, both track mounted and hydraulic stepping systems, to accompany road headers and other equipment throughout the excavation process. The findings have transferable applications to underground mining processes in which workers are exposed to high volumes of dust (eg drill and blast) or situations in which dust control at the source, mobility and flexibility offer value (eg room and pillar mining).

Contemporary mine wastewater flows are subject to stringent water quality standards before discharge to local waterways. Strict criteria are often applied as a result of fears of extensive acid mine drainage; a feature of the many abandoned mine adits around the Coromandel, Central Otago, and the West Coast. In most cases the USEPA water quality criteria have been used to set treated wastewater discharge water quality standards. In future it is possible that the recently published ANZECC water quality criteria guidelines will be used for this purpose. The ANZECC guidelines also provide for the establishment of discharge criteria at specific sites, rather than accept the trigger values. The use of site-specific criteria for treated wastewater mine discharges was pioneered at the Golden Cross gold mine, near Waihi, in the late 1980s. The procedure used to derive water quality criteria was based on USEPA guidelines. In developing the Golden Cross criteria, only species that occur, or are similar to those that occur in the Waitekauri River were used. The mine commenced discharge of treated wastewater in 1991, and macroinvertebrate communities in the vicinity of the discharge point have been regularly monitored twice a year for the past 12 years. Despite fluctuations in community composition and abundance over that period, no permanent significant changes in the macroinvertebrate communities occurred between sites above and below the treated wastewater discharge. The success of the site-specific criteria at Golden Cross has shown how the application of this methodology can result in the protection of aquatic life while allowing for the discharge of treated mine wastewater.

Models which have been presented in the literature consider only selected aspects of dense medium cyclone operation, are empirical in nature and generally relate only to severely limited ranges of operating parameters. This paper reports progress towards development of a more comprehensive and robust model. The data base consists of partitioning parameters developed using density tracers and conventional coal sampling and analysis techniques, together with recordings of parameters such as cyclone dimensions, feed pressure, medium size distribution and product media densities.. These data were drawn from 15 Australian coal preparation plants. To elucidate the effects of important operating parameters on medium behaviour and on the partitioning of large particles a series of pilot scale tests was also conducted. The present model consists of eight sub-models which relate to particular aspects of dense medium cyclone operation such as medium flowrates and densities, or size- by-size separation densities and Eps. The model structure follows a logical progression which clearly demonstrates the importance of understanding medium behaviour before attempting to predict partitioning performance. The model also attempts to define the conditions under which yield losses due to unstable "surging" discharge may occur.

Reduce the time, complexity and expense of dissolving metal and mineral samples in solution in preparation for chemical analysis. Approach In earlier research, the Bureau of Mines developed a rapid and inexpensive method for the dissolution of mineral and metal samples in plastic pressure bottles heated in a boiling water bath. Using this technique, samples could be prepared for chemical analysis in less than one hour compared with several hours by traditional dissolution methods (see Technology News No. 85, December 1980 for further details). By heating in a microwave oven, sample dissolution time can be reduced to approximately 5 minutes.

A sensitive portion of Section U 6/3 of the Vienna, Austria subway system required construction of two single-track tunnels under a telecommunications facility, where strict ground settlement limitations had been set. Local geology, hydrology, and site constraints led to the decision to use the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) supplemented by compressed air and partial dewatering. In addition, ground freezing was used, as the tunnel would pass through alluvial layers beneath the facility, with a cover of as little as 1.5 m. Laboratory testing and two in situ test fields were used to collect frozen soil data so that the freezing scheme ensured minimal heaving magnitude.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

"Design for reconstruction of the East Flagstaff traffic interchange project located in Flagstaff, Arizona posed particular challenges. The proposed design included construction of a nearly 50-foot tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall given rightof- way constraints and soft subgrade soils. The tight right-of-way, approximately 15 feet in certain locations, adjacent to existing structures limited the number of viable remedial alternatives to provide grade separation at the proposed bridge abutment without significant settlement. Preliminary analyses indicated the existing subgrade soils - consisting primarily of relatively soft silts and clays with decomposed pumice - would settle approximately 12 to 14 inches resulting in unacceptable wall deformation. Stone columns placed via vibratory methods (vibro-replacement) consisting of circular excavations which penetrate to firm bearing soils and which are filled with crushed stone were selected to densify the existing subgrade soils. The implemented mitigation measures helped limit settlement to less than one inch and allow for successful construction of the project. The project history - including site constraints, subsurface conditions, evaluation of remedial alternatives, stone columns methodology, and effectiveness of ground improvements - will be discussed.IntroductionThis paper describes the subsurface investigation performed for the reconstruction of the Business Route 40 (B-40) (Country Club Drive) and United States (US) 89 Traffic Interchange (TI) located within the city limits of Flagstaff, Arizona. This project is currently referred to as the East Flagstaff TI. The Project Site Vicinity Map is shown below.The former B-40/US 89 TI was considered ineffective in handling the current and projected volumes of traffic which transition from northbound (NB) B-40 to US 89 (both directions), as well as from southbound (SB) US 89 to SB B-40. The intent of the project was to reconstruct the TI to better accommodate projected traffic volumes. The project eliminated the existing ramps from both NB B-40 to SB and NB US 89. The new interchange includes a Tee intersection from B-40 to US 89. In order to accommodate this alignment, the profile of US 89 was raised several feet (on nearly the same as existing horizontal alignment) to match the elevated profile of B-40. B-40 was shifted just west of its current alignment to accommodate construction of a new, wider bridge structure which spans over Industrial Drive, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway, and old Route 66. South of the new bridge, B-40 transitioned back to the existing alignment just north of the I-40/B-40 TI. Within the project limits, both US 89 and B-40 were widened to three travel lanes in each direction."

Durante a fabricação do aço as grandes siderúrgicas possuem usinas térmicas integradas aos seus processos industriais. Uma operação bastante comum na indústria siderúrgica é a geração de vapor, normalmente utilizado para a produção de trabalho mecânico em turbinas (vapor superaquecido) ou em processos de aquecimento, nos quais se emprega o vapor saturado. Estes vapores de processos também podem ser utilizados na geração de energia elétrica. Para isto, foi importante assegurar a qualidade da água e do vapor de baixa pressão (VBP) enviado para Termelétrica. Foi com este intuito que a TKCSA se preocupou em padronizar o (VBP) gerado na Caldeira Auxiliar da área de Utilidades e Caldeiras da Aciaria. O desafio era transformar o (VBP) na mesma qualidade do vapor produzido nas caldeiras recuperadoras de calor (HRSG). O procedimento adotado foi á modificação no tratamento químico, a instalação de uma monitoração química contínua e eficiente para assegurar os parâmetros químicos dentro da especificação técnica recomendada pelo EPRI - Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. Com este tratamento foi controlada as dosagens químicas, a operação da caldeira e a geração dos efluentes líquidos para o tratamento químico ambiental. Contudo foi possível tornar um mecanismo dinâmico e econômico para a empresa viabilizando a utilização do vapor na termelétrica.

In this work we present a novel level set-based model for the real-time simulation of soil deformations. A level set defined by a signed distance function and sampled in a regular 3D grid represents and tracks the soil volume under deformation. Moving away from classical 2.5D heightfield representations of soil to a full 3D volume representation allows for improved tracking of cutting tool operations and the simulation of near-vertical or vertical soil faces. The proposed level set representation furthermore provides a versatile mathematical platform for modeling additional effects such as soil slip, and does not suffer from the sampling limitations of commonly used heightfields. Cutting forces applied to the tool are simulated via a formulation based on the Fundamental Equation of Earthmoving, modified to support inclined soil surfaces and transient states of tool motion. Discretisation of this 2D cutting force model with respect to the tool surface allows capturing the effects of irregular 3D terrain shapes on blades and buckets. The surcharge created during cutting operations is tracked in the form of particles and included in the soil failure force computation. We make use of an adaptive, hybrid level set-based and particle-based soil deformation scheme, which allows the soil deformation to be simulated in real-time.

Mining projects depend on the amount and quality of the mineral reserves, which in turn depend on the amount and quality of the mineral resources. Only Measured and Indicated Resources may be converted to mineral reserves and Inferred Resources may not, with certain exceptions, be used in economic studies. Responsibility for the estimation of mineral resources rests with the Qualified Person (QP) and there is a wealth of literature, text books and case studies to guide the QP. Responsibility for the classification of the mineral resources also rests with the QP. While there is some industry guidance and common practice on approaches to resource classification on which the QP can draw, the process is (or should be) heavily dependent on the exercise of judgement by the QP. However, this inevitably leads to situations where, for example, one QP?s Inferred Resource is another QP?s Indicated Resource. If the QP?s judgement is poorly reasoned or illogical (as is sometimes the case), it can have a major impact on the project, often with substantial cost or value implications. Project managers and company executives should not unquestioningly accept QP?s classification decisions and should apply the same intensity of due diligence that they apply to other critical elements of the project.

Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

In-situ measurements of ground stress were made from surface boreholes, using overcoring and hydrofracturing techniques, to obtain data for the detailed design of the underground works at Pergau. Unexpectedly low stresses were measured and appeared to correlate with apparent hydrofracturing observed during permeability testing. The low values of the minor principal stress had a major impact on design, particularly of the lining for the pressure tunnel and shaft. Additional hydrofracture tests were made underground during construction of the low- and high-pressure headrace tunnels and the pressure shaft, to define the vertical reduction in the minor principal stress with overburden. These data were then used to locate and design the steel and reinforced concrete linings

Believe it or not, good, honest, enterprising capitalism is still alive and flourishing north of our common border, and I am living proof that capitalism is still working for the little guy. My personal story of mining development in Canada isn&apos;t all that rare -- you&apos;ve probably heard something like it from other areas and other days several times -- but my case brings it up-to-date. I would like to Tell you briefly the history of Northumberland Mines Limited, a contemporary case of individual enterprise getting a mining operation underway. And if I can do it you probably can too.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017. Discrete element method (DEM) has been used as a popular simulation method to verify designs by visualising how material will flow through complex equipment geometries. Although DEM simulation is a powerful design tool, finding a DEM model which includes real material properties (e.g., shape, cohesion and friction coefficients) is not computationally feasible. In order to obtain more realistic results, particle energy loss due to rolling friction has been highlighted by many researchers. To implement a reverse torque to account for rolling friction, various models have been proposed. On account of the complexity of the problem, there is no unique model for all applications (i.e. dynamic and pseudo-static regimes). In this paper, an in-house developed DEM software (KMPCDEM ©) was used to assess the robustness of three commonly used models by comparing the repose angle of iron ore pellets obtained through the draw down test in a laboratory setup and then the elastic–plastic spring dashpot model was modified based on considering the individual parameters instead of relative parameters of two contact entities. Results showed that the modified model could produce higher repose angle. The modified model was used to calibrate DEM simulation of repose angle of iron ore pellets in a laboratory setup of the draw down test. Comparison of the calibrated DEM simulation and laboratory results showed 2° differences between the predicted and measured angle of repose. This difference was attributed to considering the particle shape effects by assuming a spherical shape for particles. Keywords: DEM, rolling friction,particle shape, repose angle
