Introduction A study was completed that investigated the enrollment in mining engineering programs in 24 universities and colleges. All programs considered in the study award four-year bachelor of science degrees in mining engineering. They also provide all the engineers for the mining industry and a large portion of the geotechnical engineers working on environmental problems, storage of hazardous waste, civic, and Federal government underground projects. The numbers used as the base for the study are those reported by each program to SME-AIME and published yearly (SME, 1986). Data for the study came from the period 1975-1985. Also, since some programs include students in related disciplines and special categories, such as cooperative students, a few inaccuracies were unavoidable. A 23-page document has been prepared that reports on the overall picture of current enrollment, the trends, and discusses the results, perceived effects, and what can, or should, be done. There has been an obvious, and dramatic decrease in total undergraduate enrollment since the late 1970s. In 1978, 3117 students were enrolled. In the 1985 fall semester, enrollment was 1022, less than one-third. There were 485 seniors, 265 juniors, 147 sophomores, and 125 freshmen. The downward trend in total enrollment is likely to continue for at least another two years. Class size The catastrophic drop in enrollment is shared by all programs across the country. It does not discriminate between types of programs, coal or hard rock mining, or location. In general, 1985's enrollment is about 30% of whatever the maximum enrollment was in any program, though this varies from the teens to 50%. The latter percentage occurs only for some programs with special circumstances, particularly new programs not well established in the late 1970s. The beginning of the decline in enrollment has occurred at slightly different times as affected by the demise of each program's local industry. The numbers in each class produced from a specific freshmen year (Fig. 1) are worthy of comment. The dramatic drop in enrollment for all classes after 1982 is clearly demonstrated. The timing coincides with the general downturn in the mining industry, when many employed engineers were laid off and new graduates could not find jobs. Also, significantly fewer students are being attracted to mining programs as freshmen. The number of seniors shown seems inappropriate. Where did so many seniors come from and why are so few graduates produced? There is an increasing trend for students to take four-and-a-half or five years to graduate. Therefore, they are counted twice, once when they are first classed as seniors and again the following year. Some students purposely delay graduation to obtain more summer work experience and take additional courses. They believe that this gives them a better

The molecular species occurring at the mineral-reagent interface of the galena-aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate system was studied by developing a technique for using an attenuated reflection method in conjunction with standard infrared spectroscopy procedures. Lead ethyl xanthate was detected from the infrared spectra of all galena surfaces treated in the pH range of 7 to 11. At pH 8.5, lead ethyl xanthate formed as a film chemically bonded to the galena surface. A solvent extraction sampling method was employed with infrared spectroscopy to obtain quantitative data on the lead ethyl xanthate removed from the galena surface. The data showed that between pH 7 and 11 thy quantity of lead ethyl xanthate physically adsorbed decreased as the pH was decreased; in the same pH range, the quantity of free lad ethyl xanthate in the aqueous medium remained constant, and the amount of unreacted xanthate varied.

The characteristics of gold leaching from carbonaceous matter by sodium cyanide, and sorption of gold cyanide to carbonaceous matter in autoclaved and non -autoclaved gold ore from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was investigated. Much greater gold cyanide complex sorption was observed for the carbonaceous matter in high preg-robbing ores relative to the low preg-robbing ores. This observation corroborates previous reports that have attributed observed preg-robbing behavior to the carbon in the ore. Gold cyanide complex sorption was found to be reversible for carbonaceous matter from low preg-robbing ore, but was irreversible for carbonaceous matter from high preg-robbing ores. Autoclaving the ore appeared to enhance the sorptive behavior of the carbonaceous matter from both high and low preg-robbing ores.

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

Refractory ores with gold entrapped in a sulfide matrix, must be processed in a first stage with chemical or physical treatment in order to liberate the gold for a subsequent step with cyanide. The goal of this research was to compare the refractory behavior of a gold concentrate treated using two pretreatment methods: pressure oxidation and fine grinding. Gold concentrate from Viacha Mining in Bolivia, assaying 50.11 gpt, with a P80 of 131 ?m was used. The concentrate contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as main sulphides in the matrix. A preliminary test with cyanide resulted only 13.5% of gold extraction with 4 hours of stirred leaching. Using an autoclave oxidation with sulphuric acid and 12 bar oxygen pressure at 220°C pretreatment, the cyanide gold extraction increased to 69.0% in 4 hours. When material was ground in a pulverizer, producing a P80 of 20 ?m and the product directly cyanided, stirred leaching gave a gold extraction of 65% in 4 hours. For both techniques, the effect of temperature, sulfur produced in autoclave oxidation, optimization of the cyanide and the nature of residues were also studied.

Clay minerals play an important role in the gravitational stability of man-made rock piles by affecting geotechnical and hydrological characteristics of the material. The Goathill North rock pile at the Questa Mine in northern New Mexico has been the focus of a multi-disciplinary study to determine the effect of weathering on rock pile stability and in particular to determine if clay minerals are forming in the rock pile due to surface weathering. The results of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses indicate the clay minerals found within the fine-grained soil matrix of the rock pile are of hydrothermal origins and did not detect any neoformation of clay minerals. The foremost mechanism for an increase in clay minerals within the rock pile is the physical break down of hydrothermally altered rock fragments to release hydrothermal clay minerals. The hydrothermal clay minerals within the rock pile show evidence of weathering by the dehydration of smectite from 2-water to 1-water interlayers within the clay mineral structure. This dehydration is most likely due to higher temperatures and low relative humidities in the Goathill north rock pile during surface exposure.

Anthracite coals have been divided into three groups: (I) meta-anthracite, a high-carbon coal that is usually very slow to kindle and difficult to burn, at least on conventional equipment; (2) anthracite, a high-carbon low-volatile coal of widely accepted value as both a domestic and industrial fuel; and (3) semianthracite, a coal lying between anthracite and bituminous coal in carbon and volatile content, and also, generally speaking, in burning characteristics. Anthracite Groupings The technical differentiation between these groups, as defined by the A.S.A.-A.S.T.M. Sectional Committee on the Classification of Coals, is as shown in Table I. Tables 2 and 3 show typical analyses of anthracites and semianthracites and Figs. I to 3 show graphically the range of analytical samples. Table 4 shows the commercial sizes of coals. Meta-anthracite and Graphitic Anthracite Typical analyses from virtually every field in the United States indicate that there are few if any extensive deposits of meta-anthracite. Some of the anthracites of Rhode Island contain almost negligible quantities of volatile and would thus fall into the meta-anthracite grouping on a basis of analyses alone. However, their other characteristics indicate that it is doubtful whether they should be considered as fuels at all, but rather as graphite. In fact, this material is being mined for use as foundry facings and furnace linings.4 A typical analysis of Fenners Lodge graphite,4 from Rhode Island, is: graphitic carbon, 55.9 per cent; silica (ash), 40.6; sulphur, 1.6; moisture, 1.9; volatile, o. Other Rhode Island coals possess percentages of volatile that would throw them into the normal anthracite rather than the meta-anthracite class. However, this "volatile" is nearly all noncombustible,3,4 being composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide and inert gases, therefore its definition as volatile is open to discussion, leaving the exact classification of the fuel a moot question. Gas wells have often intersected mining resources, but unconventional shale well drilling has more recently challenged mines to balance the risk of interaction due to higher pressures and larger quantities of gas. Full extraction mining, such as the longwall method, induces ground movement that may influence the casings if wells are drilled within the mining area. The possibility of a casing shear would lead to the risk of unplanned gas migration into the mine. This has the potential to quickly overcome the ventilation system and reach the explosive range which, if ignited, can have catastrophic consequences on the health and safety of underground workers. The utilization of network software to model mine ventilation is a common practice in the mining industry as a predictive tool for planning and monitoring and can assist with a well breach scenario over a large mining area. This work focuses on a well breach in between two longwall panels after second panel mining with gas entering primarily through the gobs of the adjacent longwall panels. Applying the network software Ventsim, a gob zone and ventilation network were created to better understand the distribution of gas within the mine and the limitations and effectiveness of a ventilation system. The model shows both a transient flow simulation and steady state concentrations throughout the mine ventilation system. Using a standard Pittsburgh coal seam longwall ventilation scheme, we find that the system can dilute a significant inflow of up to 700 cfm of methane.

This paper describes the surgical removal of a 24 ft dia. Slurry Shield TBM entombed beneath one of the country’s busiest commuter rail interlockings, the Harold Interlocking in Queens, NY, and the construction of the interface to a cut/cover tunnel which extended the mined tunnel section. A sophisticated SOE was built around the TBM to support active track loads within 8ft. of the excavation. Once the TBM head and guts were removed, a full round CIP lining was installed connecting the existing precast tunnel liner to the C/C tunnel under construction. All this construction was done on a narrow island of land without road access nestled between 7 mainline LIRR/Amtrak rail lines.

“Plutonic-related” gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As-(Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton and have been used successfully in exploration. Results from a variety of analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations, e.g. gold and bismuth have linked metallogenesis at high temperatures and thus are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

Based on underground observations made in .the coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company Ltd., this paper deals with the stress phenomena in the approach roads and headways and in the gob areas associated with the longwall method of total extraction. The deformation of roadways during development and the deformation of roadways during the total extraction period is delineated and presented in graphical form .. Conclusions are made as to the feasibility of the introduction of the retreat method of longwall extraction in one of the colhenes. The importance of future studies are enumerated, especially. those pertaining to the determination .of the opti.m.um sizes of protective pillars and to increasing the efficiency of the current methods of artificial roadway support.

In-Situ Leaching (ISL) process plants are low cost producers for uranium deposits where the geology is suitable. In the 1970s, a three-year pilot ISL program occurred on gold ore from the Ajax Mine, Cripple Creek District, Colorado, using a chloride and iodide solution [1]. The test was halted due to poor results. With gold and silver the international ISL progress has been slow; however the potential for low capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) with large low grade deposits is real. Unless the metallurgy has been demonstrated there are significant risks which could be fatal flaws to an ISL gold or silver project. The metallurgy of gold ISL projects is far from simple and it is early days with project development.

The study focused on the recovery of vanadium from a Korean vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite (VTM) ore, examining the behaviors of magnetic separation and Na2CO3 roasting-water leaching. Two concentrates were prepared using single-stage dry magnetic separation and three-step wet magnetic separation, resulting in V2O5 grades of 0.8% and 1.0% and major gangue mineral SiO2 contents of 6.5% and 1.7%, respectively. These concentrates were subsequently roasted at 1050 °C with the addition of Na2CO3 and then water-leached at 25 °C. Various stoichiometric ratios of V2O5 to Na2CO3 were tested, ranging from 1:1 to 1:40 of the theoretically required amount. As the amount of Na2CO3 increased, the vanadium leaching efficiency showed fluctuations between 4 and 35% for ratios of 1:1 to 1:10, while it linearly increased from 4 to 82% for ratios of 1:10 to 1:40 in the leaching of the low-grade concentrate. In contrast, the leaching efficiency increased from 47 to 74% for ratios of 1:1 to 1:8 and then sharply rose to 84% at a ratio of 1:10 in the leaching of the high-grade concentrate. Subsequently, it reached a plateau of 92 to 94% for ratios of 1:20 to 1:40. The difference in leaching efficiency was primarily due to the reaction of gangue minerals with Na2CO3, which hindered vanadium leaching from the VTM concentrates. This hindrance was notably more pronounced in the low-grade concentrate with the lower salt ratio, as the gangue minerals exhibited a preference for consuming Na2CO3 over vanadium. The mineral formation was analyzed in detail using XRD and MLA to shed light on the mechanism of different vanadium leaching behavior depending on the concentrate grade and vanadium to salt ratio. Based on the results of this study, it is evident that applying a proper magnetic separation procedure is significant to achieving satisfactory vanadium recovery with less salt amount by removing gangue minerals ahead.

Acid mine-water drainage is a serious problem with many mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead mining district. Particularly is this true when large volumes must be considercd in unwatering old mines that have refilled with water which has dissolved the products of oxidation and has become chalybeate in character. The experiences discussed in this paper have to do specifically with the unwatering of a comparatively small area west of the town of Baxter Springs, Kans., where the pumping job was complicated by water of this type and where the extremely high sulphate content particularly effected that phase of mine drainage having to do with stream pollution. Location, Geology and History The Baxter Springs area of the Tri-State mining field is situated just west of the town of Baxter Springs and is a northeasterly extension of the main mineralized zones of the Oklahoma part of the district (Fig I). The mining area is traversed with well defined shear zones which provide easy circulation of ground waters and the ore bodies are found along these shear zones as localized enrichments wherever the structural conditions are favorable (Fig 2). The ore-bearing strata is Mississippian with an overlain capping of shale of Penn- sylvanian age. This shale strata carries much pyrite and marcasite at its base and undoubtedly was a contributing factor to the subsequent high iron content of the water. The area originally contained a sulphide water which discharged as an artesian flow in springs within the town and gave Baxter Springs its name. These springs were famed for many years for their mineral water. This original sulphide water was first removed about 1917 and active mining was carried on west of the town during subsequent high metal price periods. Many small mines were opened, with each localized enrichment becoming a separate mine. During the depression mining ceased and all mines in the west Baxter area were allowed to flood. No serious effort was made to again unwater until higher prices caused from the demand for metal for World War II once more focused attention 011 this part of the field. Original Mining Results in Oxidation As plans for unwatering progressed, it soon developed that the mine-water pools had become strongly acid in character and carried large amounts of sulphates in solution. This occurred in the following way. When the original sulphide water was removed, shafts sunk, and mining carried on over a number of years, ferrous sulphate was formed by the spontaneous oxidation of the pyrite beds in contact with air admitted through churn-drill holes and mine openillgs. These products of oxidation can be seen today in the old mines of the district as crusts of crystalline sulphates

IN a recently reported investigation, J. B. Clark and F. N. Rhines1 used a diffusion couple technique to determine the number of intermetallic phases which should be present in the Al-Mg equilibrium phase diagram. Their method was an application of the following generally accepted principle. If a diffusion couple made up of two metals is annealed at a given temperature for a long time, all the phases of the binary system which exist under equilibrium conditions at the diffusion temperature will form intermetallic layers. It is important that the diffusion temperature be high enough and the diffusion time be long enough to permit the nuclea-tion of all thermodynamically stable phases at the interface of the couples and their growth to observable thicknesses. These simple time-temperature criteria are at times difficult to satisfy, and it is the purpose of this note to point out a situation in which this is the case. Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites which contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action by residual pegmatitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw materials for ceramic and chemical industries. However, with the discovery of Searles Lake, brines became new sources of lithium. Indeed, the 1960s may well be referred to as the "brine decade" because several brine bodies of significant economic importance were discovered. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, Nevada, presently exploited by Foote Mineral Co., and the Great Salt Lake of Utah, to be exploited by the Great Salt Lake Chemicals Corp., have been defined as major sources of lithium. Also a lithium-bearing brine has been discovered in Chile. Following the termination of the AEC purchase program in 1959, several companies such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp. were forced to close down their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminum potlines), the lithium industry grew steadily, and with the potential application of lithium metal in batteries and nuclear reactors, a healthy growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Geochemistry of Lithium Lithium is the third element in the periodic table. It is the lightest of all the metals, having an atomic weight of 6.938. Its ionic radius is 0.60A and its charge is + 1. The geochemistry of lithium has been extensively studied and has been summarized by Rankama and Sahama (1950), Goldschmidt (1937), and Hortsman (1957). The distribution of lithium in igneous rocks is controlled by its size and its charge, and by the (MgO+FeO)/Li2O ratio. In the early stages of crystallization of a magma, that ratio is very large. Consequently, both magnesium and iron are removed by ferromagnesian minerals in preference to lithium which is then concentrated in the residual magma. This results in an enrichment of lithium in silicic rocks and pegmatites (Strock, 1936). Pegmatites are coarse-grained igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids. Minerals within pegmatites may also form by metasomatism (Jahns. 1955). Genetically, the pegmatites are associated kith neigh- boring intrusives. Mineralogically, granitic pegmatites contain feldspar, quartz, and mica as the main constituents and a variety of exotic elements such as lithium, beryllium, tantalum, tin, and cesium, which may or may not occur in economically significant concentrations. Detailed studies by numerous investigators (Cameron et al., 1949, 1954; Hanley et al., 1950; Jahns, 1953, 1955; Page et al., 1953) indicate that pegmatites often exhibit an internal zonal arrangement, with each zone containing a specific suite of minerals. The lithium minerals are usually found in the intermediate zones, and although as many as 13 zones have been recognized by Cameron, a complete zonal arrangement is rarely found. Zoning of pegmatite bodies has also been observed on a regional basis. The regionally zoned pegmatite sequences exhibit mineral assemblages and complexity according to their respective distance from the granitic bodies to which they are genetically related (Mulligan, 1965). Highland Valley Copper (HVC) is a large open pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Machine guidance technology using GPS has been utilized at the mine since 1996 for blast hole drill navigation and since 2000 for shovel and dozer navigation. Since 1997, rock recognition has been part of the drilling process. This allowed the mine to develop a Mine to Mill strategy using the rock hardness information from drill monitoring systems to both refine drilling and blasting parameters as well as downstream crushing and grinding strategies. Although this preliminary effort has been very successful at HVC, the current intent is to gain further benefits through better use of existing information while also deriving an enhanced data set from monitoring production drills. In the latter case, the objective is to acquire and process drill variables in such a manner as to permit more detailed definition of rock mass characteristics. The subsequent focus will be to use the derived geotechnical and geological information as part of a practical process to more prescriptively blast the rock mass. Through the definition of domains based on drill monitored derived rock mass properties, the intent will be to enhance blast outcomes that lead to optimized downstream (from blasting through to concentration) processes in a more proactive and timely manner. This paper examines a proposed approach to be able to derive more accurate and consistent rock mass properties from production drilling. In addition, the discussion will identify potential benefits to be gained from process improvements that result in enhanced productivities, and crushing and grinding optimisation due to blasting strategies that are more closely matched to identify rock mass characteristics.

INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical while responding to a fire incident since an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring the fire contaminants such as toxic gases and smoke unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been carried out by researchers and scholars around the world. However, the proposed methods heavily rely on a vast amount of mine ventilation simulations, which are very time consuming and computer-power intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this paper, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation has been developed and implemented into a mine fire simulation software, MFIRE. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method has been proven to be reliable and accurate.
