This handbook is for the engineer or person responsible for the storage and removal of material from bins and silos in the minerals industry. The objective of the handbook is to prevent bin-related accidents by eliminating problems which require workers to enter bins. It provides basic information on handling materials so that knowledgeable decisions can be made on bin design and accessories to minimize flow stoppages. Materials are classified in terms of their flowability, and bin design and accessories suggested for each classification. A method for classifying a material is also given, and the various types of material flow aids reviewed. Safety around bins is the basic theme of the handbook. Federal regulations are reviewed and additional suggestions presented to prevent bin accidents. New equipment for releasing material hang-ups is reviewed.

Concern for the environment by the public and by mining companies, has led to many recent attempts to revegetate areas disturbed by mining activities. The problem of successfully revegetating disturbed areas and mine wastes is often difficult, even under favourable conditions. Under the severe conditions that prevail in and and semi-arid parts of Australia, such difficulties may be extreme. An approach is described in which field trials are used to investigate factors which adversely affect revegetation and to evaluate optimum methods and treatments..A wide range of methods suitable for use in and situations is described. These include grading and cultivating operations, topdressing with natural soil materials, selection of suitable plant species, mulching and the use of fertilisers and supplementary irrigation. It is concluded that such a programme provides the best approach to this complex and expensive problem.

IN the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals are blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming, characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper.

Flexoid tubing for ventilation and some of the reasons for its use in re-opening old workings at the Union Pacific Coal Company's mines at Cumberland, Wyoming. , These mines are located on a branch line off the Oregon Short Line Railroad, about sixteen miles south of Kemmerer. The seam averages from 16 feet to 20 feet thick and is split about six feet from the bottom with from six inches to four inches of fire, clay; and is covered by a heavy sandstone roof about 45 feet thick and a fire clay floor about 15 feet thick. Pitch of seam 21 degrees. These mines were opened up with 5 openings on the pitch to the west, with main slope, north and south manways and north and south aircourses on 50-foot centers with parallel entries driven north and south at right angles to the slope and rooms turned on 50-foot centers up the pitch ; entries being 350 feet apart and chutes used in the rooms. Several years ago there was a heavy, squeeze came on these mines which necessitated shutting down all of No. I Mine below the third entry, the slope being down to 12 entry; also shutting the lower end of No. 2 Mine down from the twelfth entry to fifteenth entry and from the third entry down to the tenth entry, so as not to work too much territory at the one time. These mines are very gassy and were subject to heavy bumps during the squeeze ; also at the present time. In reopening these slopes, aircourses and entries for the recovery of the pillars, ventilation was quite a problem, as the squeeze had caused them to be practically tight; also the rooms for about 50 feet from the entry and the face of the rooms for about fifty feet. These rooms in the open space being either filled with Methane or depleted air. It was found in opening up these entries that in driving back entries parallel with the top entries for ventilation. which had to be skipped along the barrier pillar left from the face of the rooms of the entry below, that we had more bumps or bounces which made it a dangerous proposition to nine, as it will be noted as stated that the entries, room necks and face of rooms were more or less squeezed tight, showing that all the weight was centered on these points and the more they were disturbed the more it relieved the overlying pressure and something had to give; hence the bumps or bounces which have filled slopes, aircourses, entries and rooms with coal from the ribs and face, for hundreds of feet, throwing cars off the track, both loads and empties, and throwing track up to the roof and discharging timbers. We found it necessary to abandon driving back entries and have used Flexoid tubing with small blower fans to open up these slopes, aircourses and entries which has proved a success. THE Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production are as follows: Fe2O3 Si02 A12O3 CAC03 MGCO Lump, per cent 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, percent 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1 ¼ to 0.063 in., is calcined at the, lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths.

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 ft and diameters of over 30 in., have become numerous and widespread. 50 such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns. Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-in. diam with 1600-ft depths, 120- in. diam with 570-ft depths, and 72-in. diam with 4800-ft depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of big holes for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of big holes. The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the big hole drilling equipment available, a compilation of the available data on large-diameter holes, to show the experience obtained to date and to show that big hole drilling is feasible and available to the industry.

"The level of scientific knowledge about the effects of contaminants is increasing and changes in environmental monitoring are likely to allow for the assessment of environment effects particularly to the aquatic environment. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in this area which include the environmental effects monitoring program for pulp and paper operations, the assessment of the Aquatic Effects of Mining (AQUAMIN) program, the Aquatic Effects Technology Evaluation (AETE) program, and the review of the federal Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations (MMLER). The paper also provides a look forward at the direction of environmental monitoring of mine projects in Canada. IntroductionEnvironmental monitoring programs provide a wide range of data to environmental management systems, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders. The data obtained are used to demonstrate that operations are in compliance with regulatory environmental protection requirements, and provide the scientific basis for assessing the effectiveness of environmental protection measures. Environmental monitoring requirements for mine projects are established based on the type of operation, site specific issues and concerns, and the requirements of regulators and mine proponents.The level of scientific knowledge regarding the potential effects of contaminants on the receiving environment is increasing, and in particular with regards to the receiving aquatic environment. Regulatory controls regarding the protection of fish, fish habitat, and fishery resources are being reviewed with regards to their adequacy, and the environmental effects monitoring program on the pulp and paper industry is expected to provide useful data relevant to those types of operations. These developments are of interest to mine proponents as it is presently expected that an environment effects monitoring program will be developed specifically for the metal mining industry under a regulated environmental effects monitoring program as part of the Fisheries Act. This paper reviews recent developments in this area, and provides a look forward on the future directions of environmental monitoring programs."

Worthy of note in Miss Bailey's paper are her comments on the attitudes of mining companies and their managers where women were employed, she says, "..another possible pitfall is reverse discrimination where in an effort to avoid being branded as having shown a person favouritism, supervisors end up treating the person in a manner much less than they deserve. This is manifested in denying an employee such things as challenging work, educational opportunities, promotions, or in the case of staff, fair merit increases." and further she says, "It has been observed that the treatment of women in non-traditional roles such as mining is different than for men in the same environment. There are people who treat women worse and some who treat them better simply because they are of the other sex." These statements may sound unjustified to today's audience, and whilst we need to credit pioneering women with having tolerated, understood and worked towards improving the mining culture, the move towards total inclusion of women in the workplace is still growing.

On the eastern end of the Mesabi Range, in Northern Minnesota, is a large formation of siliceous rock which contains bands and fine grains of magnetite. The magnetite comprises about 35 per cent. of the rock, the remainder being chiefly quartzite and iron silicates. The rock has a specific gravity of 3.4, a hardness of 7, and is extremely tough. This large deposit was located early in the history of the Minnesota iron-ore industry but has not been utilized because of its low percentage of iron as compared with the other Mesabi ores, and because of the difficulty and expense of any milling treatment that would concentrate the iron. An investigation, begun about 3 years ago, shows that the magnetit,e is finely disseminated throughout the entire formation and that there are bands or lenses of higher- and of lower-grade material, in which the magnetite and silicate are intimately mixed. As a result, the scheme of milling adopted must include a fine-crushing plant. As it is necessary to crush to 200 mesh in order to produce the desired grade of product, the fine crushing is one of the largest items of expense and for this reason has been given detailed study. It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the results of the work on fine crushing, as to both theory and practice. Previous to fine crushing the part of the rock that contains little or no magnetite can be discarded by magnetic concentrators after each reduction in size in the dry-crushing plant. This-makes it possible to fine-crush a minimum of rock and also establishes the feed to the ball-mill as below % in. The fine-crushing problem, then, consists simply in crushing the rock from 1/4 in. to 200 mesh at the minimum expense. Equipment of the Testing Plant In order to determine, among other things, the operating conditions of the ball-mill when working on this rock, a test mill of about 300 T. daily capacity was erected at Duluth, Minn. The fine-crushing plant contains a Hardinge 8-ft. by 22-in. (2.4-m. by 55.8-cm.) conical mill, a 6- by 27-ft. (1.8 by 8.2-m.) Dorr duplex bowl-type classifier, a 41/2-ft. (1.37-m.) standard Akins classifier, and the auxiliary machinery necessary to handle the products. Recently, the treatment of industrial waste materials has been a serious social problem here in Japan. Filling them in ponds is now strictly prohibited due to a limited land area and incineration method is also regulated as not to generate DXN. In these conditions, Onahama Smelter has begun to treat shredder dusts (SD) of car at reverberatory furnaces to recover various metals such as copper, gold, silver and palladium without generation of DXN. The total volume of these dusts is expected more than 1 million metric tonnes a year in Japan. Onahama Smelter is now planning to treat about 20% of them in the near future by using tonnage oxygen. A method of establishing stabilized back-pressure curves for gas wells producing from formations of extremely low permeability is presented. Actual well performance under many different operating conditions is shown by the stabilized back-pressure curve. By use of the method. it is possible to conduct back-pressure tests with a critical-flow prover on wells that stabilize slowly, and save approximately 88% of the gas ordinarily vented to obtain satisfactory test data, with a great reduction in time required for testing. INTRODUCTION The reasons for establishing dependable back-pressure curves on gas wells have been pointed out by previous publications. The publication most referred to. of course, is the United States Bureau of Mines Monograph 7, titled "Back-Pressure Data on Natural Gas Wells and Their Application to Production Practices". The technique generally established therein has been accepted and used by many engineers; and, when proper tests are conducted, the results can be used for the analysis and solution of several practical problems concerning field operation and development. Even where formations of low specific permeability are encountered, the determination of a well's actual performance by the back-pressure test method permits the engineer to analyze many problems in individual well operation and also to predict necessary future field development. Such problems as the determination of the ability of a well to produce into a pipe line at a predetermined line pressure, the design of gas gathering systems and meter settings, and the determination of the time and the number of wells required to be drilled to meet future market obligations, can be solved, in part., by the use of a reliable back-~ressure curve. In addition, the computed well delivery rates determined by data from backpressure tests ordered by state regtilatory bodies, when compared with the true back-Pressure curve, permit the operator to ascertain whether such data represent unstable or relatively stabilized delivery rates for given pressure conditions of the well. The technique of back-pressure testing, as described in this report, was developed by Phillips Petroleum Company engineers from data obtained during a testing program that started in 1944 and has been continued to date. Three hundred and eleven back-pressure tests were conducted on 299 wells located in the southern part of the Hugoton Field. The gas-bearing zone is composed of several dolomitic formations of the Permian Age; the important ones are the Herington, Upper Krider, Lower Krider, and Winfield. The average bottom-hole temperature is approximately 91 °F.. and the initial wellhead shut-in pressures range from 400 to 440 psig. The spacing pattern is 640 acres per well with each well located near the center of the section. The range of back-pressure potentials on wells tested was from 500 to 23,000 Mcfd. All gas wells were acidized, and the quantity of acid used, expressed in 1574 hydrocloric acid, varied from 12,000 to 22,000 gallons per well. The quantity and concentration of each treatment depended on the stage, the formation being treated, and experience gained from previously completed wells. The gas in the Hugoton Feld is a "dry" gas. It has a gasoline content of approximately 0.25 gallons per thousand cubic feet, as determined by charcoal test, and its specific gravity averages about 0.71 as compared to air (air = 1.00 at 60°F.). Of the wells tested, 71 were completed with 7" casing, 3 with 9 5/8" casing, and 1 with 6%" casing set on top of the upper producing formation with the well bore through the gas bearing formations being open hole. Two hundred and twenty-four were completed with 5 1/2'' O.D. casing set through the gas bearing formations and perforated. For the purpose of establishing reliable back-pressure curves in the area, Phillips Petroleum Company personnel has computed data on the basis of 24-hour flows per point. Early in the program, many tests were actually permitted to flow 24 hours to obtain data for each plotting point, at great expense in man power and time. Presently, however, such tests have been replaced by tests of short duration flows which can be made to effect results that correspond to the tests obtained by flows of much longer duration. METHOD When a gas well producing from a reservoir of low permeability is opened for production through a constant size orifice, both the rate of flow and working pressure decline. first at a high rate and later at a lower rate until after several hours the decline becomes difficult to ascertain. In this paper the rae of flow and working pressure are considered to be stabilized when it becomes difficult to observe changes in working pressure during a period of three hours by the use of a deadweight pressure gage. Stalibization of pressure in the literal sense is never obtained in a producing gas well. In formations of low permeability. such as those in the Hugo-ton Field, most wellhead working pressures approach stabilization closely enough to be used satisfactorily in the determination of a back-Pressure potential curve after flow periods of 24 hours. We shall therefore describe the backpressure curve calculated from ohserved rates of flow and working pressure at the end of 24-hour flow periods.

Innovative designs, mining, construction and reclamation practices are used at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa Indonesia to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound, stockpile and dumping system. The mine production rate is over 200 million tonnes per year (50 million tonnes processed with 150 million tonnes being stockpiled for processing later or placed in waste dumps). Dump development for over 150 million tonnes per year in a mountainous, tropical environment, while meeting environmental and permitting requirements is not an easy task. The effective implementation requires innovative techniques and practices from every department of the mine.

An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Among the primary design factors to be considered are capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements. Establishing A Survey and Test Program To produce a final plant effluent meeting regulatory agency requirements, engineers must have background data that are accurate and representative of present and future plant operation. Operating and plant engineering departments often have available much information, including plant water quantitative and qualitative requirements, both present and future, that can be helpful in the preparation of designs of pollution control systems.

"In this study, cyanidation experiments were carried out on a massive sulfide ore sample, whose grades of the precious metals gold and silver were found to be 4.2 g/t and 311.9 g/t, respectively. Other elements in the ore were arsenic with average grade of 1,751.6 g/t; antimony, 619.7 g/t; zinc, 781.4 g/t; copper, 454.6 g/t; lead, 101.8 g/t; mercury, 324.3 g/t; and bismuth, 0.6 g/t. The first objective of test work focused on determining the best conditions for extracting gold from the ore, ground to less than 75 microns. Different influential parameters such as particle size fraction, cyanide concentration, pH and leaching time were investigated. The optimum parameters were found to be particle size fraction of less than 25 microns, cyanide concentration of 2,000 mg/L, pH of 11 and cyanidation time of 24 hours. In these optimum conditions, the highest gold and silver leaching efficiencies were 76.88 and 59.63 percent, respectively. In addition, roasting as pretreatment at a temperature of 700°C over a period of two hours was evaluated. Cyanidation testing of the roasted ore in the optimum conditions found increases in the gold and silver leaching efficiencies to 85.97 and 67.57 percent, respectively. Moreover, antimony extraction rose to 43.10 percent, from 23.73 percent without roasting.IntroductionGenerally, gold ores can be classified as “free milling” or “refractory,” depending on how they respond to cyanide leaching (La Brooy et al., 1994; Celep et al., 2009). While high gold recoveries (> 90 percent) from free-milling gold ores can be readily achieved, refractory gold ores are often characterized by low gold recoveries (50-80 percent) within a conventional cyanide leaching process (Rubisov et al., 1996; Adams, 2005; Celep et al., 2009). The presence of preg-robber components such as carbonaceous matter, sulfide minerals and aluminosilicate can further decrease gold and silver dissolution rates and recoveries. With the negative effect of the presence of preg-robbers, gold dissolution is considerably diminished in solutions with high cyanide concentration (Tan et al., 2005). In such refractory gold ores, gold particles may sometimes be occluded or included in the sulfide minerals, and pretreatment becomes necessary to break down the mineral structure to liberate gold for subsequent recovery. These ores are usually pretreated with an oxidizing process, after which gold and silver can be recovered by a standard cyanidation process. The main oxidizing processes available for refractory gold ores are roasting (LaBrooy et al., 1994; Angelidis and Kydros, 1995; Li et al., 2009; Karimi et al., 2010; Kyle et al., 2012), biological oxidation (Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Komnitsas and Pooley, 1990, 1991; Deng and Liao, 2002; Ciftci and Akcil, 2010, 2013) and pressure oxidation (Mason, 1990; Murthy et al., 1992; Qingcui et al., 2009). Mineral process wastes, such as metallurgical slags nowadays, are of significant metals and materials resources in the circular economy. The usability of iron-making slag is well established; however, steel slag still needs to be utilized due to various physicochemical constraints. In this context, we have reviewed the global steel slag generation, processing, characteristics, and potential application with suggestions for futuristic possibilities to address the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of steel slag recycling. The steel slags inherit characteristics from ore chemistry and their processing routes, which may be Blast Furnace-Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) or Direct Reduced Iron-Electric Arc Furnace (DRI-EAF) steel-making routes with/without treatment in a Ladle Furnace (LF). The average generation of slags in BOF, EAF, and LF processes accounts for 110 kg, 70 kg, and 40 kg per tonne of steel, respectively. Considering global steel production of 1878 million tonnes in 2020, the associated slag by-products possess a significant resource of major components like FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, etc. Selecting a recycling technique depends on the slag's end use, logistics, and physicochemical characteristics. BOF and EAF slag are used ~ 48% in road construction applications and ~ 10% for industrial specific metallurgical use. EAF slag is preferred as cementitious material as compared to BOF. Hot-stage modification of BOF slag has emerged as a preferred method to achieve desired chemical and subsequent mechanical properties for end use. BOF slag has high carbon dioxide sequestration potential for in-plant remediation among steel slags.

Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!

THERE is at the present time a revived interest in amalgamation, due to the number of mines starting up, usually on high-grade ore, and utilizing this relatively cheap and convenient means of recovering gold, more especially in their initial stages of production. The marked increased use of the amalgamation process has revealed a dearth of amalgamators and there is no doubt the art of amalgamation has stood still for a generation or two and is not readily applicable to the modern practice of milling gold ores. Mill operators of long experience are learning the art for the first time and are giving it intelligent study, and considerable testing and research work is now being undertaken Most millmen consider amalgamation a simple process, and so it is when we have a clean ore with coarse gold, specially when stamps are used for crushing. In treating Nova Scotia ores by stamps and amalgamation, recoveries of 95 to 97 per cent are common and easily obtained. So-called 'under-water feed' is almost universally used in Nova Scotia and is quite beneficial. The water is supplied through jets between the dies and below the die surface and maintains this space as a live trap which catches the gold particles before they are overground and spoilt for amalgamation. With this method, the portion of gold recovered in the battery is higher than usual and often amounts to 80 per cent of the total gold in the ore, the remaining 20 per cent being caught on the plate. As a continuous amalgamator, the simple plate cannot be excelled. Some of the modern devices having moving or covered and not very accessible plates, which cannot be readily inspected and dressed to keep them in condition, do not give the best results in service. An exception might be drawn in the case of amalgamation of very heavy ore or concentrate which would bank up unless the plate is carried at such a steep inclination as to weep mercury. Difficulties in stamp-mill amalgamation are encountered when acid water is used or when grease is present. Also, certain sulphides and graphitic and talcose ores give trouble, resulting in poor gold recovery and high mer-cury loss. The older literature on gold milling deals with the common troubles of this type and the old-time amalgamator was well able to take care of day-by-day difficulties. When the difficulties were unsurmountable, the ore was classed as 'refractory' and other processes were used.
