Surface contamination of minerals during fine grinding may occur due to coating of one material on the other. This can alter the surface chemical properties and adversely affect the separation of minerals by physico-chemical processes. In dolomite-silica system, selectivity was completely lost (compared to a synthetic mixture) after wet grinding of the minerals in spite of using a dispersant. Adsorption and surface characterization studies were conducted on silica particles separated after grinding with dolomite. SEM-EDAX analysis indicated the presence of dolomite on silica particles, which could cause the loss of selectivity.

We of the employer class represent labor in the social organization and in industry just as truly as do those who labor only with their hands, and, because our labor is chiefly with our brains, the duty is all the more imposed upon us to use those gifts in which we excel in helping steer a clear course through the turbulent waters in which we are now enmeshed. Only their selfish engrossment in the daily tasks they were employed to perform could possibly have permitted the great majority of the intelligent and industrious German people to become terrorized by a handful of the idle, the vicious, and the criminal, whom the elections to the National Assembly showed to be in as pitiful a minority as they are in Russia, in this, and in other countries. It is the leisure unemployment of the I.W.W.'s, the Bolsheviki, and the Sparticans that has enabled them to devote their whole time to a concerted and aggressive struggle against the great majority of those of the world's workers who are unorganized, and who are therefore even in opposition one to the other. In union there is strength, and this was never better illustrated than by these conditions. The great fallacy of our previous attitude toward social and industrial problems has been the belief that labor, by which we commonly mean organized or physical labor, is something antagonistic to and having a different object in life from that great body of unorganized laborers who work with their brains. Our difficulty has been our lack of will or opportunity to think. The hurry of our daily struggle to earn our livelihood under the nerve-racking pressure of modern civilization has left us no opportunity for quiet thought and study. The physical laborer, and above all the laborer in the mines, on the other hand, has all his hours of toil in which to think over, in all their varied aspects, those problems that concern his immediate, personal well-being. As a result he has arrived at perhaps a more true appreciation of the facts of life in their relation to social and industrial conditions than we. Have we not too readily adopted the view that, as the managers of industry under the direction of capital, it has been our duty to think and act in opposition to labor, rather than to realize that we also are laborers, have like aspirations, and should participate in a free and aggressive solution of these problems rather than leave their solution

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. The Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation has provided Bureau of Mines researchers with an opportunity to investigate the hydrology of leaching an in place copper ore deposit. Hydrologic investigations of underground in situ copper leaching are being jointly conducted under a cooperative agreement. The hydrologic concerns of leaching operations at the Casa Grande mine focus on maintaining adequate solution injection and recovery rates, and on distributing the injected leach solution effectively within the ore deposit. Hydrologic considerations underlying these concerns relate to the permeability of the oxide ore zone during leaching, the unsaturated condition of the deposit prior to leaching, and the constraints imposed on in situ hydrologic design by the underground mine setting. The investigation involves monitoring of flow and pressure conditions in 58 injection and recovery wells, estimating permeability conditions using a hydrologic model, and on-site testing of hydrodilation and airlift pumping. Transient, fracture-controlled permeability is determined to be the dominant hydrologic consideration. A statistical modeling procedure has been developed for estimating changes in permeability during leaching. Flexibility in well design and operation is essential for accommodating the changes in fracture permeability that occur during leaching.

"Roughness at varying scales is an important component of the shear strength of discontinuities. Small scale roughness can be assessed in drillcore and through laboratory testing of drillcore derived samples. Large scale roughness, or waviness, also plays an important part in peak shear strength and a number of methods for its incorporation into defect plane strength models are presented.A number of methods for capturing waviness data from exposed faces are reviewed. A method is presented for deriving waviness from downhole televiewer data, which is shown to be significantly more accurate than structural data derived from core logging. The method is based on work undertaken in the highly anisotropic bedded units of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia where televiewer surveys are routinely undertaken. Values of waviness are derived through a review of variation in dip resolved in the direction of the slope face. This method allows design engineers to incorporate large scale roughness in defect plane shear strengths at the design stage.INTRODUCTIONThere are a number of constitutive models currently being applied by rock mechanics practitioners in calculating defect plane shear strength parameters, such as Patton, Barton – Bandis and Hencher [1, 2, 3]. Most of these shear strength determinations are typically undertaken by determining the base or residual friction angle, and applying corrections for small and large scale surface roughness."

Ore quality is declining, and the current spirals in mineral sands extraction is deemed inadequate to efficiently extract the valuable minerals. A new spiral was developed, the 117HM with the aim to extract the total heavy minerals in the order of 4.0% - 6.0% and the economic heavy minerals in the range 1.0% - 2.2% from the feed. An important measurable in the gravity concentration of mineral sands is recovery. Recovery measures how effectively the separator has extracted the valuable mineral contained in the input stream. The number of turns on the spiral trough influences the residence time of the feed slurry. A further optimisation followed with the development of the twelve-turn 117HM spiral. Four more turns were added for better recovery. The paper quantifies the effect of residence time on recovery.

This Bureau of Mines report presents three methods for designing bulkheads to impound water underground: (1) thin and thick plate design; (2) South African plug design; and (3) single and double bulkhead seal design. Related areas critical to the long-term effectiveness of underground water impoundments are also addressed. These include bulk-head anchorage, concrete specifications and placement, the grouting of permeable strata, and the sizing of barrier pillars. A case study involving hydrostatic tests conducted on a single bulkhead seal constructed in the Safety Research Coal Mine of the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center is presented in an appendix.

The possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only sourcc of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or not these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps, a few hundred thousand dollars' worth of chemically derived potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

Two different groups of mechanisms have been considered in the past to explain the effects of chemical additives on grinding. While one group of explanations is based upon alterations of surface and mechanical properties of the individual particles, the other group depends mainly on the arrangement of particles and their flow in suspensions. In this paper some of the past work on grinding aids is reviewed and attrition grinding of a commercially important ceramic material, zirconia (stabilized with yttria) with polyaaylic acid as grinding aid, is studied in order to determine the effect of the aid on the ground product itself. It was observed that even though polyaaylic acid did cause a drastic decrease in the viscosity of the pulp, it did not have any major effect on the grinding of zirconia at least up to 2000 ppm and only minor detrimental effect above it. Importantly, complexation by the polymer was found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.

The oxidation kinetics of single-crystal silicon has been investigated using extremely dry oxygen as the oxidant. Two techniques were used. The first involved a flow system with which incremental thickness measurements were made. This sytem provided an oxygen ambient at atmospheric pressure which had a moisture content of less than 0.1 ppm of water. The second technique involved measuring the change in volume of oxygen with time in a closed system. A temperature range of 900O to 1200 "C and a pressure range of 20 to 760 Tory were covered. Both techniques showed that a simple parabolic rate law holds only at the higher temperatures. At lower temperatures, the data up to 5000Å can be fitted well to a linear-parabolic equation. The two constants in this rate equation are examined in terms of a physical model. The parabolic portion of the low-temperature oxidatLon fits along the high-temperature curve of an Arrhenius plot. The parabolic rate constant for the flow-system technique can be expressed by k = 2 x 10-9 exp (L 31 kcalRT) sq cm per sec. The manostatic technique gave k = 1 x 10-exp (- 23 kcalRT) sq cm per sec. By extending the thickness range to over 104. a rate law of X = At seems to fit all of the data better than the linear-Pavabolic law. Here the exponent n increases from 0.518 at 1150 V to 0.637 at 900°C. PASSIVATION of silicon planar devices through thermal oxidation is of such great importance that considerable effort has been devoted to the study of the process.17 Much of this work involves hydrothermal oxidation, in which H2O is the oxidant: whereby H2 is produced. It has been proposed that the reaction proceeds by the formation of Si-OH groups and hydroxyl diffusion through the film to react with the silicon surface. Thus, the silicon oxide layer probably contains residual hydrogen in some form after oxidation in H2O and it has already been established that hydrogen has a marked effect on the electronic properties of oxide-passivated silicon surfaces. Silicon is oxidized by oxygen at elevated temperatures; but the rate of oxide formation is considerably lower than that for 0." By using dry O2 as the sole oxidant, the presence of residual hydrogen is presumably avoided. At present, the mechanism of thermal oxidation by dry O2 is a matter for conjecture, and the presence of small amounts of H2O was reported to have a marked effect on the rate of oxide formation10 (perhaps on the electronic properties of the surface, as well). Hence, this study of the kinetics of silicon oxide growth in 0, was undertaken: 1) to determine the oxidation rate at atmospheric pressure in a system designed to exclude rigorously all traces of H2O in the ambient 0,; 2) to obtain oxidation-rate data in situ in dry O2 by means of a continuous monitoring of the amount of 0, consumed during oxide growth. These objectives are complementary—the first assesses what effects (if any) are obtained by excluding H2O from the reaction, and the second expands this information while at the same time avoiding the uncertainty inherent in relying upon incremental measurements of oxide growth to furnish kinetic data. THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent. of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART 1.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent. of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust.

Although it is impossible to give definite final figures at this time on Nation-wide accident occurrence in 1933 , enough data are at hand to indicate that the progress in safety in the mining industry, which first became apparent in 1930 and was accentuated in 1931 and 1932 , was continued and much improved in 1933. This improvement was of considerable magnitude in mining both bituminous coal and anthracite but was not so great in other branches of the mining industry . While the volume of work done in all phases of mining increased in 1933 over that in 1932 , the exact amount of the increase is not yet known . Usually increased activity in mining is accompanied by even greater increase in the rate of occurrence of accidents to the workers , but happily it appears that this " rule " was not operating in 1933 --at least in the coal -mining industry .

"So much has been written on the ore genesis of the Comstock Lode that it is sufficient here to describe the original ores as consisting chiefly of quartz and some calcite. In places .a considerable amount of pyrite appears. There are also minor amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. The chief silver minerals are argentite, stephanite, and polybasite. Most of the gold is native.A composite analysis of the ore; obtained by averaging the results from the early workings of several mines, is shown in Table 1.The history of the milling of Comstock ores from the Sixties to date would call for a review of the development of precious-metal metallurgy. However, a brief outline of the methods employed will give a better basis for studying the difficulties that are to be expected in the final retreatment of the remaining residues.In the earliest days amalgamation was accepted as the main recovery method. The large tonnage of good-grade ore from the Comstock Lode attracted the best metal¬lurgical talent of the time, and developed there the highest skill in the art of amalgamation, including the auxiliary chemical preparation of the ores and the mechanical operation. In this work 0.5 to 6.0 pounds of mercury was used per ton of ore. The mercury loss probably averaged about 2.5 pounds per ton of ore treated.The better grade of tailings from the ores milled were impounded, often near the works. In many cases the same tailings were reworked several times before they entered the main outflow waste stream that had its course down Seven Mile Canyon to the Carson River. Following the water course down the canyon the tailings were re-impounded, and, as metallurgy advanced, new plants were erected to again re-treat them. The most successful of these plants used forms of amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanide methods of recovery. To the tailings from the re-treatment plants, smaller tonnages of untreated tailings produced by milling lower-grade ore are continually added.Along the stream bed down the canyon a series of blanket runways were constructed, and each was independently operated for years by one or more men. All, or the heavier portion of the stream flow was run over the blankets; in this way much of the heavier concentrate, mostly sulphides and mercury products, was reclaimed.All of the residues finally entered the run-off flow along with the sewage from Virginia City and waste from the gas works, saw mills, and stables. As the accumulation along the bed of the Carson River became a nuisance, the lighter and better grade of tailings was impounded on the banks of the river. This accounts for the large dumps locally known as ""Douglas tailings."""

Energy consumption and distribution in aluminum production, conservation accomplishments, and future goals are presented. Electrolysis and electrode manufacture show the greatest promise for major improvements. Means are proposed for reducing waste heat generation in smelting and for conserving energy in anode manufacture by furnace design and substitution of other materials for petroleum coke. Hall-Heroult Process modifications, alternative designs, and the Alcoa Smelting Process are discussed as energy savers. Scrap recycling, more use of aluminum in transportation, and the installation of offshore smelters in less developed countries are shown to be additional means of coping with possible energy dislocations.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. As a part of a symposium on the relations of structure to ore deposition, in February 1938, the writer presented some tentative opinions derived from his experience with a number of important lead-zinc replacement deposits. These ideas were set forth, as a basis for discussion and a stimulus to further inquiry, in a mimeographed leaflet that read as follows: Intimate acquaintance with a number of lead and zinc deposits in metamorphosed limestones seems to indicate the existence of certain common features from which can be established some general principles governing the localization of ore in this type of formation. It is suspected that these principles can be applied, with modifications, to mineralization in unmetamorphosed limestone. In metamorphosed formations, some observed rules are as follows: 1. Bands or masses of pure limestone are very resistant to replacement by ore solutions, and are likely either to contain no ore or to resist replacement until near the end of mineralization. The reason for this apparently is physical, not chemical, since microscopic data indicate that when ore is deposited by far the greater part of it substitutes for carbonate. The chief factor is believed to be a lack of porosity in massive limestone that has undergone flowage and recrystallization. 2. Masses of intensely siliceous or silicated rock are likewise unfavorable ore receptacles. This seems to be accounted for by two factors: (a) chemical unsuit-ability or resistance to replacement, and (b) physical resistance to small-scale brecci-ation, which might faeilitate the opening of effective channelways for solutions. Some low-grade ore may occur, however, and also sporadic fracture fillings. 3. The optimum condition for ore reception appears to be found in bands or areas containing carbonate and silicates (or quartz) intimately mingled in something like equal proportions. In this situation movement is likely to result in mixed flowage and fracture, producing a finc-textured porosity that admits solutions freely and provides access to an abundance of replaceable carbonate. Cleavage cracks in some minerals such as diopside are believed to facilitate the penetration of solutions. 4. Certain minerals or assemblages are regarded as favorable impurities in a limestone and others as unfavorable. Original quartz, and subsequently developed diopside, and perhaps garnet, are typical favorable pre-ore gangue; in general rather equidimensional, brittle minerals. Tremolite, biotite, and probably wollastonite, are typical unfavorable pre-ore gangue; in general highly elongated and somewhat flexible minerals likely to develop under strong shearing stresses. 5. Tentative opinion is that the ratio of lime and magnesia in a limestone is of little or no importance.

THE effect of mining in the red-ore mines of the Birmingham district has been observed for some time, but, except in a few localities, little difficulty has been experienced from disturbance of cover. Cave-ins near the outcrop and fracturing of the surface at greater distances are the most pronounced manifestations of disturbance, while limited areas at points distant from the outcrop and under greater depth of cover have actually subsided. There is no doubt but that in time, because of failure of pillars, extensive fracturing and widespread settlement of the surface will result, particularly along the slope of Red Mountain, where mining has been under way for many years. Were it not that the orebed is overlain by one or more water-bearing formations, the fracturing or settlement of the surface would not be serious; but because of these formations, fracturing of the top rock may in itself be of sufficient importance to warrant the adoption of protective measures. Until development openings and surface plants are transferred to Shades Valley, protection of the surface will probably not be considered imperative, as the area involved is not of particular value for agricultural or building purposes. Further, the collapse of pillars over a wide area may develop squeezes that, if not controlled, may jeopardize the integrity of the mines and necessitate a change in development, from slopes to vertical shafts, at a much earlier period than is now contemplated. The occurrence of heavy beds of strong tough materials at varying distances above the orebed make it doubtful whether any serious disturbance of the surface will be experienced at any considerable distance from the outcrop, although some settlement will probably take place. It is certain, however, that no great volume of water will enter the mines from fracturing of the Fort Payne chert bed, as this is known to be a compact and practically impervious formation beyond the leached zone. Not so much can be said, however, regarding other possible sources of water, as pervious beds and through faults that may be encountered in future mining operations.

IT HAS been generally recognized that, owing to the extreme friability of, galena, fine grinding has a tendency to cause excessive sliming of the mineral, so operators of lead mills have attempted to avoid this condition by commencing concentration at as coarse sizes as any mineral is freed. Jigging has been the basis of the milling process, making a clean coarse concentrate and a large amount of tailing, which was considered sufficiently low-grade to be rejected. However, developments and improvements in concentration processes are everywhere changing the low-grade tailing of yesterday into material worth retreating today. Investigations of the work of the Hancock jig on the Bonne Terre ore- have shown that the best results to be expected will give a tailing assaying 0.75 per cent. lead; the average over all conditions and grades of ore will be between .0.80 and 0.90 per cent. By crushing the jig tailings in ball-mills and retreating by tables and flotation, a tailing of considerably lower grade can be made; the problem then becomes an economic one of increased crushing costs versus higher recovery. In considering the entire elimination of jigging, the increased smelting charges; due to a greater amount of slime galena will be counterbalanced by the lower operating cost, in-creased recovery, and the many advantages of a simpler flow sheet. In developing these problems in the Bonne Terre mill of the' St. Joseph Lead Co., a long series of tests has been carried out covering every stage of crushing and concentration, and a large number of possible flow sheets were considered and tried.
