A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.

For several years prior to about the middle of 1928 both the number and capacity of natural-gasoline plants showed a steady increase; this resulted from a material gain in the supply of casinghead has due to the discovery of a number of flush fields with relatively high gas-oil ratios. From 1928 to date some form of proration has been continually in force, with a consequent curtailment in the supply of wet gas. This decline in available gas and a severe decrease in prices, due largely to the increasing competition of light refinery products, has eliminated virtually all of the weaker units during the last 5 years, with the result that the number of plants declined from 1,155 on January 1, 1928 to 19035 on January 1, 1930, to 909 on January 1, 1932, and then to 859 on January 1, 1934, The struggle of the small high-cost producers to exist is illustrated further by the trend in the number of shut-down plants, which has increased from 36 on January 1, 1930 to 100 on January 1, 1932 and to 128 on January 1, 1934. The increase in the number of plants prior to 1929 resulted in a material gain in the total capacity, but the decline in number between 1929 and 1932 was not followed by a corresponding decrease in capacity, as gains resulting from the construction of a few very large plants overbalanced the loss due to the dismantling of a large number of small ones. However, the low prices of 1932 and 1933 supplied little incentive for new construction, and the total capacity declined in approximately the same ratio as the number. Thus the total capacity declined from 11,387,000 gallons daily on January 1, 1932 to 13,060,000 gallons daily on January 1, 1934, Of the latter 9,181,000 gallons (91 percent) represented the capacity of the operating plants and 679,000 gallons (9 percent) the capacity of the idle plants.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the rock burst problem and measures being taken for its alleviation in the deep underground mines of the Coeur d?Alene Mining District in northern Idaho. The geologic features that contribute to rock bursting in that area are discussed and briefly compared with similar features in other burst-prone mining districts throughout the world. Early investigations to understand and control rock bursting are reviewed, and the mechanics of bursting are discussed in terms of the seismic events that produce them. Sources of strain energy, rock failure mechanisms, and the conditions necessary for the release of seismic energy are covered in detail. Rock burst research in the Coeur d'Alene District is described. Included are discussions of the microseismic method as both a research tool and as a rock burst monitoring system, rock destress blasting and preconditioning methods for rock burst control, and stoping methods currently being developed to reduce rock burst hazards.

Several years ago, while I was chief chemist for a malleable-iron company, it occurred to me that the mere regulation of silicon was not sufficient to produce the desired degree of chill. But only after repeatedly encountering this fact in both open-hearth and air-furnace, as well as cupola metal, was I led to regard variation in the total carbon as the principal cause of disturbance; and I resolved to determine the total carbon as well as the silicon in every heat, and by a carefully prepared test piece to gauge the approximate degree of chill. Mining in Mexico is one of its post traditional activities, whose influence in the development of important cities and communications has been decisive. Precious metals and, to some extent, copper and tin were known and used before the Colonial period, but from the sixteenth century to tie end of the nineteenth century, mining and metallurgical industries were concentrated in the precious metals, mainly silver. This silver was exported to Spain and other countries under the Spanish. Rule, Mexican peso was known world wide since the end of the sixteenth century and Mexico ranked as the first silver producer since the eighteenth century.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to discuss those aspects of open pit mine design which are affected by geotechnical factors. The temptation exists for some practitioners of geotechnical engineering to believe that this relatively new engineering discipline is the ‘be all and end all of mining.’ In the opinion of the authors, this is fallacious but, as our ability to put numbers to the behaviour of rocks and soils improves, it is clear that geotechnical engineering will become an integral and important part of designing and operationg mines success- fully. Open pit mines in the context of this paper also includes open cast mines, where the 'ore" is extracted and the waste material is immediately replaced or ' backfilled in the mined portion of the pit. Open pit mines operating today move from very small tonnages a day to in excess of 400,000 tons per day. Several mines are operating and are being designed to capital expenditure for such projects in some cases exceeds five hundred million dollars and in a few cases will exceed one billion dollars. The size of this investment means that financing will have to be provided from banks or joint partnerships. This financial environment means that planning will be carefully scrutinized by experienced representatives of financial institutions or other mining companies. All too often a project has been put in jeopardy because the personal desire of one or two men to make a project proceed has caused incomplete planning or perhaps in some instances deliberately leading observers 'down the garden path.’ In our opinion the day is rapidly arriving when the quality, logic, practicability and completeness of the planning will make the difference between securing financing or not and, in the cases of existing open pit mines, of the difference between survival and closure.

It is the nature of the initial detonation to the powder around the cap which governs the greater or less effect of the explosion of the whole charge. The cap communicates to the first particles of powder a disruptive impulse, which, according to the nature and strength of the cap, more or less completely overthrows their equilibrium and decomposes the powder with great energy, setting up sympathetic vibrations that explode the particles of powder in turn by the violent disturbances or friction between them in a regular succession of impulses and decompositions, which, if started with sufficient energy, are of such intense heat and velocity that the rupturing force of the explosive is developed practically instantaneously. This detonation has already been shown to be not only the result of mechanical force, but a combination of extremely sudden chemical and dynamical reactions which set up vibrations to which different powders are more or less susceptible, and these explosive reactions will be propagated through the mass of the powder according to the intensity of the vibrations and the resistance with which their motion is opposed by the nature and consistency of the powder, whether it be difficult or easy to oxidize, soft and plastic like dynamite, or hard. If the initial detonation of the powder surrounding the cap is of the highest degree, the vibrations will be most intense and will be propagated further through the mass than by a poorer detonation. Hence the different degrees of detonation. Unless the first particles of powder are so thoroughly decomposed by a detonation of high order, or first degree, as to convey the necessary heat and energy to detonate the whole charge, the greatest force of the powder will not be developed. There will frequently be unbottomed holes or pieces of unexploded powder scattered about, or both, and the air in the mine will be contaminated with some obnoxious gases that have not been completely oxidized.

Exploration in 1955 was marked by a trend toward large-scale programs using a number of geophysical techniques. These programs were initiated both to locate new mineral districts and to bring individual prospects into production. All 14 companies replying to the author's questionnaire include geophysics in the general exploration routine whenever it is applicable, and five companies carry on extensive geophysical programs. Nearly all report that company personnel perform the surveys. In addition to these firms there are the many smaller operators who contract much of their geophysical work. There are indications that the volume of such contracting is sizable.

IT IS generally recognized that the natural gas absorbed in petroleum plays the leading r6le in moving the oil through the sands to the well and supplies the energy that delivers the oil to the surface when the wells are flowing. It is the purpose of this paper to note the amount of oil that could be lifted by this gas if 100 per cent. efficiency were obtained and the efficiencies actually obtained in the use of this gas. An article in MINING AND METALLURGY,' stated that in a Wyoming field, with a pressure of 300 lb. per sq. in., there would be absorbed 65 cu. ft. of gas per barrel, or 1.55 cu. ft. per gal. of oil. The writer does not know if data have been obtained, by experiment, for pressures beyond those indicated in this article, therefore, for the purpose of illustration, he has projected this curve to obtain figures for pressures greater than 300 lb., although probably experiment will show that the extended line is not quite correct.

At the present time most artillery cartridge cases are used only a single time. Since the process of reshaping a fired cartridge case so that it may be used again is much simpler and cheaper than the original manufacture of the case, it is clear that important savings could be effected if such re-formed cases were used in place of new cases. Extensive use of reconditioned cases has been hindered in the past, however, by the deterioration of the brass which may occur in the period of time between the first firing and the reconditioning of the cartridge cases. This deterioration sometimes results in a dangerously high incidence of firing splits in groups of reconditioned cartridge cases. It appears that the mechanism of the deterioration is the season cracking of the brass, for season cracks, of varying degrees of severity, may frequently be found in the cartridge cases after their return from the field. There are, of course, severe practical limitations to the extent to which fired cartridge cases can be protected from corrosion under battle conditions, particularly since the powder residue in the case is itself corrosive. The present paper describes a rapid method of testing the sidewalls of artillery cartridge cases for the presence of season cracks. This method has been developed specifically for use in connection with the reconditioning of fired cases, and makes it possible to carry out 100 per cent inspection. ATTEMPTING to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic " and " macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes? or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also underly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all segregation effects. UNDERCOOLING AND NUCLEI FORMATION It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus tempera¬ture. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number increases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AND HEAT DISSIPATION DURING FREEZING Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period: Thus the rate of freezing depends primarily on the rate of heat dissipation. Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

This bulletin covers all mines in the United States that were operated in 1936 to produce metallic ores and all mines that were operated to produce nonmetallic minerals other than coal, stone, sand, gravel, or their products. Reports from mine operators revealed a better safety record for fatal accidents in 1936 than in any other year except 1934 during the 26 years for which annual surveys of accidents in the mineral industries of the United States have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines. On the other hand, the record for nonfatal injuries, although better in 1936 than in any year prior to 1930, was not as good as it was from 1930 to 1935, inclusive.

THIS paper assumes the incontrovertible nature of the statement that the validity of competition in the nonnatural resource industries is established firmly on the rate and extent of the economic development of the United States. It then demonstrates the nonexistence of any condition within the petroleum industry that would invalidate the principle of competition as applied to it. It points to the benefits that competition has effected in the oil industry and the reasons why the practice of the competitive principle should continue to keep the industry virile and progressive in meeting the requirements of future generations for the kind of products natural to it. Finally, it pleads for a clearer view of the affairs of the oil industry by seeing them against a background of the whole economy. INTRODUCTION Even a few years ago there would have been only an academic reason for presenting before this Institute a paper on the validity of competition in the oil industry or any other natural resource industry; today there is no more practical subject for this body to consider. In social importance it transcends attempted solutions of perplexing technical problems; and even the numerous legal and economic problems that grow out of administration of state regulatory measures appear to be of secondary importance because they would cease to exist if competition were abolished. The aspiration of certain elements of the Federal Government to acquire control of the oil industry has long been suspected The vital need for petroleum in the national defense ... confirms my belief in the urgent need of Federal legislation to safeguard our petroleum supply through prevention of waste and by establishment and maintenance of sound economic conditions in the oil industry... . But also it may be dismissed with this mere mention of it because it predicates government control and the abandonment or broad reduction of competition on a war emergency. Clearly, the fight for a nation's life may justify a government's control over men and resources that would be abhorrent and economically enervating under conditions of national security. More pertinent to the present matter, because it appears expressive neither of a personal ambition nor of an emergency condition but rather of the long-range view of a certain school of conservationists, is the pronouncement of no less an authority than the Attorney General of the United States, who has been repeatedly quoted by the press as saying that the American Petroleum Industry constituted a case "where the principle of conservation of an exhaustible and irreplaceable resource should replace the principle of competitive exploitation." Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

Johnstown is the site of the extensive iron, steel, and wire-works of the Cambria Iron Company. It is situated at the western base of the Alleghany Mountain, 275 miles from Philadelphia, and 78 miles from Pittsburgh. The valley in which the town and its ironworks are located, has an average elevation of 1160 feet above tide water. Johnstown, in its main features, is a modified duplicate of Pittsburgh. It is located at the confluence of the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek rivers, which, by their union, form the Conemaugh River, just as Pittsburgh is situated at the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, which together make the Ohio River. The site of Johnstown is in a cutting through the lower productive coal measures, 500 c feet deep, with steep slopes along the valleylimits, exposing, in sharp-cut terraces, the outcrops of the coal and iron-ore beds; the whole surmounted by the shales and sandstones of the barren measures.

When the automatic control of a ventilation process is considered, and supervising expert systems need to be designed, an important problem to address is: what will be the optimal set points of the regulators that should meet a certain number of independently formulated requirements, distributed over a ventilation network? The set of these requirements, expressed in terms of air flow quantities or differential pressures in certain airways, need not be consistent. Their number is not limited by the number of available regulators, nor by their nature, i.e. passive or active. Moreover, they may be subject to upper or lower limit values. The method described here addresses this problem and tries to provide a tool that should allow to calculate the set points of all the regulators as a global and optimal solution with respect to this set of distributed requirements. The pure mathematical developments in this paper are kept as short as possible in order to allow more room for the description of a relevant example.

Chromium diffusion coatings on commercial Armco iron lead to carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries in and below the coatings. High compressive stresses are introduced into the coating and, as a result, tensile stresses are introduced into the base material below the coating. In coated samples, fatigue cracks form at the grain boundaries below the coating after only a limited portion of the total lifetime (5 to 10 pct). Residual tensile stresses and a stress concentration caused by precipitated carbides seems to be responsible for early crack nucleation. Stage I of Propagation may be divided into two substages: I-a in which the crack Propagates along grain boundaries, and I-b in which the crack propagates along slip boundaries according to a shear mode. In uncoated samples, the cracks form at slip bands after 40 to 50 pct of the total lifetime. In coated samples the Propagation process takes longer than in uncoated samples because of the moderate rate of crack extension until the crack breaks through the coating. The chromium-diffusion coating causes little if any increase in fatigue life. CHROMIUM diffusion is one of the most popular processes used to apply coatings to iron alloys. This popularity stems from the fact that the diffusion treatment is comparatively easy to carry out, and it improves certain surface properties such as corrosion and wear resistance as well as some other properties. Very little effort has been devoted to the investigation of the effect of chromium-diffusion coatings on mechanical properties and particularly on fatigue properties. Since the chromium coating usually represents a small fraction of the total volume of the base material it is generally assumed that the macro properties are dependent principally on the base material rather than the coating. Insofar as fatigue is concerned, there are indications that the fatigue life of the chromium coating is not less than that of the basic material and the fatigue properties are generally not reduced by it.' But chromium diffusion causes drastic structural and chemical changes in the region of the material surface2-4 which introduce additional residual stresses. Such changes must affect fatigue crack nucleation and may sometimes affect the initial stages of propagation. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the secondary stages of the crack propagation could be influenced by some irreversible structural changes in the core of the material, which stem from the long-time heat treatment at high temperatures required to apply the coating. This paper analyses the structural and compositional changes produced in commercial Armco iron by a chromium-diffusion coating and the effect of the coating on fatigue crack initiation and propagation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The investigations were carried out with commercial Armco iron. The chemical composition of the iron, the number of specimens tested, the grain size produced during chromizing and heat treating, and the thickness and microhardness of the chromized layers are shown in Table I. Samples were chromized by a gas diffusion process. The temperature and time of the diffusion coating process were chosen according to a previous grain growth study. It had been found that at a temperature of 970°C and a holding time of between 3 and 9 hr there are practically no changes in grain size. To describe the grain size more accurately the ASTM method5 was supplemented by a statistical analysis of the mean volume diameter as outlined by Fullman6 and The The mean volume diameter was deter- mined from D = p/2m where D is the mean volume diameter, and m is the mean reciprocal value of grain diameters as seen on the micrograph. The shape and the size of the asymmetrical sample, see Fig. 1, were chosen so as to facilitate the study of fatigue crack initiation. Before coating, the samples were machined and the surface of the groove was polished. After chromizing, the two side surfaces were machined and polished so as to retain the coating only on the top surface of the groove. Residual stress in the chromized layer was measured on the top of the grooved section of the specimen after the diffusion process. The inclined incident X-ray beam procedure was used.9'10 The computations were performed with the initial assumption of a zero surface normal stress component. There is an established need for an inflow of foreign capital if New Zealand is to meet projected growth rates. The Government recognises this and encourages capital inflows especially where there are allied economic benefits such as the access to specialised know-how or export markets. The Government has promulgated certain Regulations which are administered by the Reserve Bank. Under the Capital Issues (Overseas) Regulations 1965, consent is required before any company incorporated overseas can commence business in New Zealand or before an overseas person can borrow or raise any money in New Zealand. A New Zealand company is deemed to be an overseas person if more than 25% of the voting power is held by non-residents. In terms of current policy, overseas companies are permitted to borrow in New Zealand only a limited amount of working capital and some longer term capital calculated on the ratio that their New Zealand owned equity capital bears to their overseas owned equity capital. Wholly owned overseas companies are expected to bring all of their Fixed term capital from overseas.
