A diverse patent portfolio and an effective intellectual property strategy are vital in today’s small business world. Not only does a diverse patent portfolio enable a company to secure a monopoly within the market, it greatly increases the value of a company’s intangible assets and keeps competitors at bay. An overview of the patenting process as it pertains specifically to the materials science-related start-ups will be given, together with a summary of some general patenting strategies and a review of some patenting errors to be avoided, such as premature disclosure of the invention to the public. Additionally, a review of new “green technology” initiatives recently adopted by Patent Offices around the world is also provided. These initiatives are expected to greatly benefit patent applicants in the fields of metallurgy and mining, where research efforts are often directed to environmentally-friendly products and processes. INTRODUCTION Patents are playing an increasingly significant role in the business world. A diverse patent portfolio can enable a company to secure a monopoly within the market, which can provide a competitive advantage over competitors. At the same time, patent portfolio of any size can greatly contribute to the total value of a company’s intangible assets. As an example, Nortel entertained bids in 2011 for its portfolio of about 4000 patents, a large portion of which were directed to 3G- and 4G-mobile communication technologies. The portfolio was eventually sold for $4.5 billion to a consortium including Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, Research in Motion, and Sony. Copper mining, and indeed the global mining industry as a whole, is facing challenges. Ore deposits are increasingly low grade, complex, and deeper in the ground, rendering copper mining operations more difficult and costly. Production costs are increasing. According to one study, the cost of producing copper has increased by an average of 10% per year since 2005 (Cantallopts, 2017). To illustrate, the cost of producing a pound of copper in 2005 was 90 cents, but had increased to 217 cents by 2014.

"A refractory ore body located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula contains high concentrations of nickel and copper chiefly occurring in the minerals pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite. Refractory ore bodies are difficult to treat by conventional mineral processing methods so microwave pre-treatment of the ore is employed to increase metallic-particle/host rock liberation by making use the differential thermal expansion properties of the mineral phases that absorb microwave energy. The Curie temperature measurement of metallic-bearing particles is in agreement with the known value for pyrrhotite occurring at 325°C. A nickel-rich iron sulfide mineral is found to be in occurrence and also appears to be magnetic under BSE imaging. It is shown the ore particles heat rapidly when exposed to microwave radiation for short durations of time mainly due to the high concentration of ferromagnetic mineral phases. Rapid heating causes thermal expansion of constituent mineral phases that produce cracks within ore particles. SEM imaging shows fracture occurring along grain boundaries and throughout host rock matrix. Ball milling experiments show an increased grindability of the ore resulting in a decrease in work index values.IntroductionCrushing and grinding operations consume 50-70% amount of energy used in mineral processing operations [1]. All these processes involve high energy impact of surfaces to develop compressive stresses that produce cracks to initiate breakage of particles. Microwave pre-treatment of certain types of ore might provide an energy savings to these type grinding processes by taking advantage of the tensional forces produced by selectively heating microwave absorbing type mineral phases. The heating of ore particles produces cracking by thermal expansion of the constituent mineral phases. Conventional heating has been investigated and shown to positively aid in grinding processes but determined energy inefficient to be used commercially."

Jaspilite, a mineral consisting of silica and iron oxide in varying proportions, is one of the host rocks of the high grade ore deposits situated in the Middleback Range of South Australia. As a result of laboratory investigations, a flowsheet was postulated for the beneficiation of jaspilite to produce an acceptable grade product for feeding to blast furnaces, The flowsheet involved the reduction of the hematite in the haspilite to magnetite, the grinding of the reduced product to 95 pct minus 325 mesh Tyler followed by wet magnetic separation, hydroseparation and filtration to yield a magnetite concentrate. Agglomeration of the fine concentrate would then be necessary to meet the physical requirements of blast furnace feed. To prove the postulated flowsheet, to obtain a more accurate estimate of costs and to obtain design data for a commercial installation, a pilot plant was constructed at Whyalla, South Australia.

ELIOT, the great educator and philosopher-he of the five-foot book shelf-recently gave expression to a thought I had long been cherishing as a private opinion, when he said: "It is obvious that standardization has become a dangerous adversary of progress in both education and industry." This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A.G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue- gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 2.2000 F for the calcining step and 'a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat- efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. t. alumina per day heat consumption figures of less than 1.400 BTU/lb A12O3 were achieved.

With the exception of the extreme northeastern part of the state, Mississippi lies wholly within the Gulf Coastal Plains. The largest structural feature definitely proved is the so-called Jackson structure1 in the central part of the state. This structure is mainly the result of the burial of an igneous ridge on the old sea floor. The ridge trended in a northwest direction from about the town of Jackson in Hinds County into southeastern Arkansas. The present structure is the burial of the ridge. Recent detailed surface work by major oil companies has suggested smaller structures in other parts of the state, but so far they have not been definitely proved. Also considerable magnetometer and seismographic work has been done in the northern and central part of the state. The results of the operation of the seismograph are not yet available, but the magnetometer located many "magnetic highs" in this part of the state. Outside of the area of the Jackson structure, the exact cause for this magnetic variation is not known. In a portion of south Mississippi, considerable seismographic work has been done recently in an attempt to locate salt domes. While the details are not available, it has apparently met with little success. Prospecting by districts during the past year may be summarized as follows: Five wells of importance were drilled in the Amory district of east Mississippi. This district comprises all or parts of Monroe, Lee, Itawamba, Prentiss, .Alcorn and Tishomingo counties. Small gas was discovered at about 2500 feet. Several wells were drilled in the. Jackson district which is located in part or all of Hinds, Rankin, Madison and Yazoo counties. Some of these wells were abandoned and one was shut down most of the year

The performance of the Renison tin concentrator was assessed in detail for two arrangements of the three available ball mills. With two mills used for primary grinding and the third for regrinding table tailing, the concentrator recovered 65.3 per cent of tin in the three tin concentrates produced by tabling, vanning and flotation at a calculated overall grade of 37.5 per cent tin prior to batch dressing. In the second arrangement one mill was used for primary grinding and two mills for separate regrinding of table tailing and sulphide concentrate. The metallurgical effective- ness of the change was somewhat obscured by unintended changes,i.e. an increase in the assay of the fresh feed from 1.38 per cent to 1.1+6 per cent tin and unresolved changes in the sulphide rougher flotation and tabling. However, using the results from a detailed size by size analysis of the behaviour of ore components in appropriate parts of the plant, it proved possible to show that, had the two unintended changes not occurred, up to 5 per cent

The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2S04 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, HC03, U, V, Na, K, Ca, Mg, SO4, C1, Mo, Mn, Fe, Al, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

In this study, adsorption of copper by chemically modified orange peel was investigated. A conspicuous change occurs in the surface morphology of the biomass due to modification, which is depicted by SEM images. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were obtained and the effects of various factors, including solution pH, contact time, initial metal ions concentration and temperature, were studied by batch experiments. Kinetics was found to be best-fit pseudosecond- order equations. Equilibrium was better described by Langermuir isotherms rather than Freudlich isotherms. At 25?, pH5.30, the maximum adsorption capacity was 70.67mg?g-1 . With increase of temperature, adsorption efficiency decreased. The biosorbent was suitable for repeated use for more than five cycles.

It is perhaps a little difficult for Americans fully to appreciate the slow progress in the search for oil in Australia. Conditions are so different from those in the United States that methods must also differ considerably. Australia possesses an area almost exactly equal to that of the United States, but has a population of less than 7,000,000, and this population is concentrated almost entirely around the eastern and southern coasts of the continent. There are, therefore, vast "empty spaces" entirely unpopulated or exceedingly sparsely populated. The emptiness is due not to any lack of energy or initiative on the part of Australians but to the arid and waterless character of much of the country's interior. Throughout the greater part of the area that is comparable with the Mississippi drainage area of the United States, there is not a single flowing stream, and over most of it the rainfall is less than 7 in. a year. This hinders exploration and geological survey, and also isolates from potential markets many of the regions that otherwise might be considered worth prospecting. Also, Australia consists of six independent and sovereign states. With the establishment in 1901 of the Commonwealth of Australia, the states retained complete control of lands and mineral rights. Each state has its own petroleum legislation, and the absence of a central controlling authority has tended to confusion and to the introduction of many complications in oil prospecting. There are three major "territories," administered by the Federal Government; namely, the Northern Territory, enclosed between the northern parts of Queensland and Western Australia, within Australia itself, and the Territories of Papua and New Guinea in the island of New Guinea. Land and mineral legislation in these territories is not uniform. Furthermore, during the late twenties there occurred an orgy of company flotation and indiscriminate drilling, wQch resulted in the discovery of some definite indications of oil in three of the states and two of the territories, but which failed to develop any producing oil field in the common acceptation of the term. This is a rather comprehensive subject and cannot be thoroughly covered in the short rime allowed for its presentation. This article will touch only upon a few of the chief points of the difficulties encountered in recovering copper from brass shell cases in a primary smelter which was not designed to treat scrap metals. Owing to the fact that the plant is at present (Dec., 1946) closed, and our tests were not completed, full details of the results are not available. As is well known, most primary smelters are situated near the mines in the interior of various countries and are not close to seaports or large industrial and railway centres. Consequently, iris unusual for a primary smelter to be asked to treat scrap metal of any kind. When so required, iris obvious that the primary smelter is at a great disadvantage, for the simple reason that it probably has to pay the freight on the scrap from the seaport or industrial centre to the smelter and then also pay the freight on the recoverable metal from the smelter to the refinery, or seaport or industrial centre. Another disadvantage is that a primary smelter is not equipped to sample and unload the scrap nor bas it usually the equipment adaptable for treating the scrap efficiently, as the plant bas been designed to handle large tonnages of ores and concentrates. This short paper will describe some of our difficulties> and how they were corrected. However, it might be advisable to state briefly some of the methods used in treating brass shell cases in other plants. In the first place, a brass plant producing new brass- especially those producing brass billets for extrusion to make brass tubes or rods, or to be drawn into wire, or making brass cake to roll into brass sheets- generally insists upon using new electrolytic copper and zinc and is opposed to using any scrap or secondary brass . Consequently, such a plant usually will not treat brass shell cases. Therefore, the usual procedure is to ship brass shell cases to a secondary smelter, where it is generally sorted, melted, fire-refined, and returned to the market in the form of a high or low brass ingot which can be sold to brass foundries for making brass castings. This evidently is the cheapest and simplest method. Another method is to ship to a smelter which is a combination of a primary and secondary smelter attached to or near an electrolytic refinery. In plants of both these types, that is a primary smelter with Cottrell dust collectors or a combined primary and secondary smelter with Cottrells or a bag house, the zinc may be wasted. However, if a bag house is used, some of the zinc is recovered, but it is usually contaminated with other metals and further processing is required to recover it.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited (æSolid EnergyÆ) is a state-owned coal mining company, producing 4.0 Mtpa from a number of opencast and underground mines in the Huntly, West Coast and Southland regions in New Zealand. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries. Solid Energy is expanding and developing its risk management practices across all areas of the business: strategic planning û extensive use of scenario analysis and probabilistic modelling over a 20 year period; investment decisions û development and application of a rigorous six stage æProject Assessment GuidelineÆ process for all new mine developments; geological and geotechnical risk assessment techniques û use of best practice techniques including seismic surveys; financial risk management û a dynamic approach to hedging based on effects based analysis of Cash Flow at Risk analysis against preset risk tolerances; risk financing û the use of a captive insurance subsidiary, and the experiences of a small coal company seeking to obtain insurance cover on a æhardÆ international insurance market; and integrated risk management û the challenges of trying to implement a broad integrated risk management approach across the company, that supports implementation of strategic objectives as well as meeting æcompliance or legislative basedÆ risk management requirements.

Coal's Dynamic Legacy The first session presented by Mr. Zumwalt emphasized Western coal development, the heritage of the industry and its growth in the West. The session began with a brief description of the geologic origin of coal followed by a short history quiz given the audience to stimulate their curiosity and involve them in the presentation. Slides and flip charts were used as visual aids and a demonstration of energy resources and uses was made by playing the famous Skyline jelly bean game. Coal Mining Today Today's coal mining practices were dealt with in the second session as Mr. Zumwalt appeared dressed in the garb of the modem day miner. He then led a discussion of coal production in the Western states, its uses and the different techniques used in extracting coal from both a surface and an underground mine. Current coal transportation and markets were also touched on. Our Exciting Future Recent coal growth in the marketplace and new uses of coal products to the year 2000 were dealt with in the final session. Mr. Zumwalt covered things that currently impede the expanded use of coal and things that can negatively or positively affect the future use of coal. In each of the three sessions, Mr: Zumwalt was ably assisted by Mrs. Janet Gwilliam, his secretary at Utah Fuel Company.

More than 3 trillion gal of water are used annually by the mineral industry. Of this, approximately 21/2 trillion gal are recirculated, the rest constituting intake water. The major users are natural gas processing plants and phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore producers. Water was used by the mineral industry for mining (6%), processing (64%), cooling and condensing (27%), and miscellaneous uses such as boiler feed and sanitary purposes (3%). Whereas total water use is dependent on the quantity of material processed and on the particular process requirements of an industry, recirculation is dependent on processing, as well as cooling and condensing requirements, quality of new water intake, and the necessity for treating new and discharged water. Consumed water, on the other hand, is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, and temperature and humidity in the area. Based on this analysis, an increase in water use by the mineral industry of 21/2 times by 1985 is forecast. Wster intake, however, will only rise 62%, because of a substantial increase in recirculation. In one report of a special series concerning the water resources of the United States, the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources, 87th Congress, estimated that water demand would double by 1980 and triple by 2000.' In view of the possible water deficiencies that might result from such expanded usage and the need for research guidance, the Bureau of Mines organized and carried out a statistical canvass of water use in the mineral industry for calendar year 1962. The data used in this paper, unless otherwise noted, are derived from that canvass.' The efforts in this paper are devoted toward summarization of the canvass and analysis of the data. SOME DEFINITIONS Intake: Water introduced from an external source for the first time into a given mine or plant regardless of quality. Intake water is also called new water, water withdrawn, or makeup water. Fresh Water: Water suitable for cooking and drinking. Saline Water: Water containing more than 1000 parts per million of dissolved solids. Contaminated Water: Water not suitable for domestic use, but excluding saline water. Recirculated Water: Water reused to conserve intake water. Solutions that are recycled primarily because of fixed metallurgical practices, such as copper leaching solutions containing sulfuric acid, are excluded. Gross Water Used: Recirculated water plus intake water. Also called total water used. Consumed Water: Water that is lost by evaporation, as well as water lost in product. Seepage and transferred water are not considered consumed. The use of either intake or recirculated water may result in consumption. However, because of difficulties in measuring consulmption, consumed water is defined as the residual between intake and water discharged from the mine or plant. Mineral Industry: For the purposes of this paper, mineral industry includes all metal and nonmetal surface and underground mines and their associated processing plants, as well as custom mills, coal washing plants and associated mines, petroleum and natural gas well drillers, natural gas processing plants, and secondary recovery operations. WATER USE IN THE MINERAL INDUSTRY Water used by the mineral industry constitutes a relatively minor fraction of the water withdrawn by all users. Data compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1960 indicate that water withdrawals, exclusive of that used to generate hydropower, approximate 99 trillion gal annually.3 Our data indicate that water withdrawals by the mineral industry comprise only 1% of this total, or 2% of the water withdrawn by industrial users. Use by Industry: Water used by various mineral industries is shown in Table I. The table indicates that close to one-half of the gross water used by the mineral industry in 1962 was used by natural gas processing plants, followed by sand and gravel, phosphate rock, and iron ore producers. The largest aggregate users of water are also the largest users per dollar of product. "Present paper reviews the various processes for making of metallic foams. These methods are classified in accordance with the state of initial metals - liquid, powdered and ionized. Liquid metal can be foamed by direct inputting of gas into melt, using gas releasing foaming agents or producing supersaturated metal-gas solutions. This group also includes methods creating voids in the melt. Powder route is based on using powdered matrix metal with foamable precursor materials. Finally Deposition techniques allows making highly porous metallic structures using ionized metal.Experimental study presented shows importance of wettability in bubble formation at gas blowing into melt simulation liquid (water) through holes. Good wettability of injection holes by water ensures formation of bubbles with smaller sizes that effect to the final foam structure.IntroductionOne of the objectives of future production technology is to make of lightweight constructional materials while achieving improved property and good economy as well.The most perspective lightweight materials are cellular or foamed materials that are Wide8pread. in nature and have a growing interest in industry and everyday life.Even metals and metallic alloys can be produced as cellular solids or metal foams beside of the traditional engineering materials such as polymers, ceramics or glass. This paper discusses briefly the major reasons associated with the growth and its impact on the energy requirement and Environmental imbalance. A projection based on the present global Alumina and Al requirement indicate a substantial further growth of at least 30% over the next 10 years. It is indicated that the main factors which are likely to influence investments are the environmental factors such as the Climate Change and global response to the growing energy prices and sustainable development. Each of the developed / developing nations must find response to the GHG emissions which will encourage the Al Industry to make an effective contribution to global warming while preserving the international competitiveness of the industry - a challenging task. The efforts shall concentrate on improving energy efficiency in the industry possibly of the order of 25% over the next 10 to 20 years. The developments in this line are discussed.

DURING the fall of the year 1873, attention was redirected to the occurrence of lead ores in Southwestern Arkansas (chiefly in Sevier County), and somewhat extensive explorations of the deposits have since been made in the hope of finding the ores sufficiently argentiferous to be profitably worked. How far the expectations have been realized I am not authentically advised, but samples of the galena ore, yielding 62.09 per cent. of lead, gave on assay at the rate of 15 3-10 ounces of silver to the ton of ore. This was the highest result obtained by myself, though I am informed that higher yields have been obtained by others. Among the samples of ores from this locality, forwarded to me in January last, was one specimen which I at once recognized as stibnite, and, on notification, other specimens of the same from Sevier County were forwarded me. The first specimen of the several received contained 11.51 per cent. of gangue, 57.62 per cent. antimony, 4.57 of bismuth, with small amounts of arsenic and iron. The latest result from a portion of another hand specimen I append in full, with duplicate estimations of the arsenic, bismuth, and gangue. The analyses were all conducted by Mr. C. R. Winters, under my direction, and in the case of those given below the ore was separated as closely as possible from the gangue before analysis. The results are for the mineral freed from hygroscopic moisture, and are as follows:

Prior to November 1975 there were several failures of front -wheel spindles on large haulage truck s in B.C., attributed to fatigue cracks. Since that time, a non-destructive test program has succeeded in detecting the cracks before catastrophic failure, However, the author regards the failures as just one example of a. general unreliability in large high-strength steel castings and urges the industry to look to forgings for sensitive components of heavy equipment.

AND WHEREAS, appeals for additional advice have been received: NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED: (1) That the policy of the Institute is to refrain from official participation or action in controversial non-technical economic subjects; further (2) That if any Local Section is in doubt as to the application of this policy to any particular subject, it should communicate with the Secretary of the Institute for advice.
