IT has been observed that a hexagonal-close-packed crystal will undergo the same macroscopic displacements as an isotropic material if the basal plane is perpendicular to the axis of twist.&apos; Other orientations may produce both bending and twisting, but this analysis will be confined to pure torsion of a right circular cylinder. The z axis, the axis of twist, and the specimen axis are coincident. The displacements are given by Uq = rz, Ur = Uz = 0 [1] where 4 is the angle of twist per unit length. The displacement of a point is the resultant of two displacements produced by intersecting screws sweeping over the point. The dislocations must pass over the point (r, o) in such a manner that its resultant displacement corresponds to the observed macroscopic displacement. If 6&apos; is measured from the [1010] direction, then for 0 < ? < ~/3, only the [1210] and 121101 type screw dislocations are needed to produce the required displacement. Molten silver is equilibrated with silicon nitride at 1400°C in nitrogen + hydrogen gas mixtures, and from the solubility data the activity coefficient of silicon is found to be 1.76 at silicon concentrations below 1 pct. Using this value, and that available from the silicon cmbide solubility measurements, together with those derived from the phase equilibrium diagvam, the activities of silver and silicon are estimated for the entire composition range. The main feature of the activity data is that there is a pronounced positive deviation from ideality. The activity of silver in molten silver containing up to 5 pct Si was determined by Schadel, Derge, and Birchenall1 by measuring the vapor pressure of pure silver and of the alloy over a temperature range of 850º to 1050°C. They deduced from their results that there is a positive deviation from Raoult&apos;s law and that the activity coefficient of silver increases with decreasing temperature. However, as pointed out by Kubaschewski and Catterall,2 their activity coefficients are much too high, giving silver activities greater than unity. At a later date McCabe and Birchenal13 showed that the previous vapor pressure data on silver4 were high by a factor of about 1.3; presumably a similar error must have occurred with the vapor pressure measurements on the Ag-Si alloys. The activities of silicon and silver calculated by tager&apos; from the phase diagram and by Gibbs-Duhem integration, respectively, show a positive deviation from Raoult&apos;s law for silicon activity and positive and negative deviations for the silver activity. According to these computations, at infinite dilution of silicon ygi = 1.12 at 1420°C. d&apos;Entremont and chipman6 measured the solubility of silicon carbide in molten silver at unit carbon activity; the equilibrium silicon content is found to be Nsi = 0.017 ± 0.002 atom fraction for 1420°C. Using the data of Grieveson and Alcock7 for the free energy of formation of silicon carbide from pure silicon and graphite, the activity of silicon for unit activity of carbon and of silicon carbide is asi = 0.0308 at 1420°c; therefore for the above solubility data on silver, YSi = 1.81, which is somewhat higher than that given by Hager. Use is often made of silver alloys in the measurements of activities of solutes in metals where silver has a very low solubility; in fact, Ag-Si and Ag-A1 alloys have been used in the past for such purposes. In an attempt to gain more thermodynamic data on molten Ag-Si alloys, measurements have been made in the present study on the solubility of silicon nitride in molten silver; the results on these solubilities are given in this paper together with a detailed discussion of activities of silver and silicon. SOLUBILITY OF SILICON NITRIDE The standard free energy of formation of silicon nitride is known with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. According to the measurements made by Hincke and Brantle8 and by Pehlke and Elliott,&apos; the following are the free energy data for the standard states of solid Si3N4, liquid silicon, and Nz at 1 atm pressure:

Mexico&apos;s mineral wealth has long been recognised and indeed has played a historically significant role on a world scale. The dynamics of the Mexican mineral industry have experienced a dramatic transformation especially over the last two decades. This transformation has mainly been instigated by the high growth rates and industrialisation of the Mexican economy since the 1960&apos;s. This paper focuses on the base metals sector of the industry which represents one of the major contributors to this transformation. The objective is to present a brief base metals review and to discuss some recent occurrences which pertain to this sector of the industry. This is followed by a discussion of mining&apos;s relevance in the current economic situation in Mexico. With this overview as background, the investment climate, primarily from a domestic investor&apos;s perspective and secondly in terms of foreign investment, is discussed. Finally, some recent government initiatives, including tax and accounting changes, are outlined. Any one of the sections of this paper can easily be developed into an extensive and indepth analysis; however, the intention of this paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the topics discussed.

PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

Sinkhole development in karst terrains is a serious problem and risk to facilities built in these areas. The potential for sinkholes are a function of many things including the chemistry of the underlying rock, the location of water conductive fractures and fissures in the rock, the natural fluctuation of the ground water table, vibrations from various sources and surface regrading activities. When sinkhole open near quarry operations the occurrence of these features is occasionally attributed to vibrations from quarry blasting. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the development of sinkholes as a result of quarry blasting. In general, it has been found that sinkholes result from collapse or piping of overburden soils into cavities or caverns developed within underlying carbonate rocks that have been in existence for many thousands of years. The overburden soils in karst areas are typically clayey and as a result are not subject to densification or liquefaction as a result of vibrations. The primary cause of an increased rate of sinkhole development can be attributed to changes in the ground water table or local surface water drainage. These changes may be caused by seasonal fluctuations, ground water level lowering in drought periods, dewatering of excavations or quarries, or local changes in surface drainage resulting from grading activities.

Gentlemen : My object reads "Longwall Rapid Advance of Coal Mining in the Federal Republic of Germany". It is true that the percentage of coal obtained in your country from longwall faces, with at present 1.2, is still rather low, but it increased considerably since 1966 with 0.4 %. The coal mines of the Federal Republic of Germany ever used longwall as the classical method of coal getting. All attempts to introduce bord and pillar mining did not lead to any wider application of this method. The principal reasons, for this appear to have been: - the deeper depth of our workings, - the wish to keep working losses as low as possible and to utilize the deposits opened up by deep and therefore expensive shafts to the furthest possible degree, - the dense sequence of seams and the mutual influencing of the working points, - the high number of disturbances in the geologically much stressed deposits, - and the necessary considerations to the protection of the densely built-upon surface.

Using residual activity technique, the diffusion of palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in alunzinum has been studied in the temperature range of 400" to 630°C. The diffusivities (in units of square centimeters per second) have been expressed as: IMPURITY diffusion in aluminum,1-9 silverand lead5 for cases of low solid solubility of the impurity in the host metal has yielded frequency factors in the range of l0-6 to l0-9 sq cm per sec whereas the activation energy is practically half the self-diffusion activation energy value. From the observed values of frequency factor, activation energy, and entropy of activation, it has been suggested&apos; that these solutes are not diffusing by vacancy or interstitial mechanisms but by a mechanism which should be consistent with such low values of the diffusion parameters (Do and Q). However in spite of extensive work on these types of systems, the mechanism of diffusion is still not well understood. The present investigation on the diffusion of palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in aluminum has been carried out to throw further light on the diffusion mechanism in systems, where the solid solubility is very low (except for the case of silver). The results are discussed on the basis of solid solubility and the structural changes involved owing to the presence of the solutes in aluminum solid solution. An attempt has also been made to apply the existing theories of charge5-8 and size8 difference between the solute and the solvent. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens (1/2 in. diam by 3/8 in. high) were machined out of pure aluminum (99.995 wt pct) rod obtained from Johnson Mattheys. They were sealed under vacuum in quartz tubes and annealed at 620° C for several hours; the grains thus developed were sufficiently large to eliminate the possibility of diffusion along the grain boundaries. The flat ends were prepared carefully after polishing as described previously,10 Radioactive nitrates of cadmium, indium, and tin and chloride of palladium containing, respectively, cd115, 1n114, sn113, and pd103 were dissolved in distilled water and mixed with 30 pct acetone. By means of a micropipet a drop of this solution was placed on a smoothly polished and lightly etched surface of the specimen. Due care was taken to see that the solution spread uniformly on the surface of specimen without trickling down its sides. Radioactive silver was elec-trodeposited using a AgCN-KCN bath. The amount of sample deposited in all the cases was not more than 0.1 µ thick. The samples were then sealed in quartz tubes in vacuum. The cadmium samples were sealed in a purified argon atmosphere to avoid evaporation. The samples were then diffusion-annealed. The temperature of annealing varied between 400° and 630°C and was controlled to ±5°C. On heating to -400°C,the deposits of cadmium, indium, and tin, which were of the order of 0.1 p in thickness, were converted to their respective oxides. The contribution of oxygen present in the lattice of aluminum due to these oxides has been calculated and found to be less than 10 ppm in all cases. Oxide method has already been used by other workers11&apos;12 in diffusion studies without any controversy on the issue. However, in some of these investigations, metallic deposition was also tried. The diffusivities calculated from these measurements were found to agree very well with the diffusivities obtained by using the oxide method. Thus it is assumed that the measured diffusivities represent true diffusion coefficients. Since palladous chloride decomposes at about 500°C, the deposited samples which were to be diffusion-annealed below 500°C were heated in vacuum for a very short time at 500°C to allow the decomposition of palladous chloride to palladium metal. Time taken in decomposition of nitrates to oxides and chloride to metal was negligibly small as compared to the period of the diffusion anneals. The residual activity technique13 was used to study the diffusion profiles where thin layers from the specimen surface were removed by grinding it parallel to a flat surface on a 600-grade carborundum paper. The specimen was washed, dried, and weighed, the differ -ence of the weight being the measure of the thickness of the layer removed. After each such abrasion and weighing, the total residual activity on the surface of the specimens was measured by counting 0.656, 0.94,

Those who for the first time see, at a mine, a great hole caused by subsidence; or, going underground, see an extensive fall of roof or hanging wall are apt to regard such an occurrence as an accident and not a normal condition of exhaustive mining. Moreover, the public is inclined to believe that a cave or subsidence of the surface is the result of carelcssness in mining or the rapacity of the mine operators in "robbing pillars," a tern too loosely used in descriptions of coal mining. This belief is fostered by the common-law requirement that an owner of the surface or of surface improvements is entitled to full support of the surface. Court decisions have upheld this law even when that owner has sold or leased the underlying mineral, unless a clause in the sale or lease contract exempts the mining company from paying the owner of the surface for damages that may result from mining. Another reason for this belief is the earlier practice (which is still extensively followed in this country) of leaving all coal pillars unmined, except as they have been thinned by so-called robbing; by not extracting the pillars, the surface may be supported by them for years, perhaps for generations. Inasmuch as the practice of leaving permanently in the mines from one-third to one-half of the mineral is wrong, with respect to conservation of a national resource, it behooves the mining engineers to assemble data and disseminate information on the subject, pointing out that subsidence must follow complete extraction, unless expensive methods of back-filling are employed, such as are used in Germany and France. These methods inevitably increase the cost of mining and the price of the mineral produced. It is popular to speak of "waste in mining" without a realization that much so-called wasting is unavoidable unless subsidence is accepted and provision made therefor where the surface is valuable, or else the only present known alternative of hydraulically placing sand or crushed stone filling in the excavations, at an increased cost of the mineral product to the consumer.

It is possible to closely simulate the product sizing distribution from an industrial rod mill by the correct choice of parameters in laboratory batch milling. For laboratory batch rod milling, changes in per cent critical speed and per cent rod volume cause the product sizing distributions to move in parallel at a constant slope. For ball milling, larger sized media in batch milling grind more coarse material giving a closer simulation to the industrial rod mill product. Changing the feed size distribution by removal of coarse particles or addition of fine particles changes the product sizing distribution, but would not normally be practiced in laboratory testing. These data should be applicable to many instances where laboratory simulation of an industrial product size distribution is required.

This Paper will deal with Bucketwheel Suction Dredging and its particular relationship to mining applications. There will be comparisons with other methods of suction dredging and descriptions of two recent bucketwheel installations in the mining area. The Directory of World Dredging Fleets published in the `larch 1984 edition of World Dredging magazine shows that there are about 1.000 conventional Cutterhead Dredges listed throughout the world with 289 in the United States. There are 242 Bucketline Dredges listed throughout the world of which only 6 are in the United States. These figures are not completely accurate because several units are known to the author that are not on the list and, of course, there may be others.

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1ms increments up to 1500ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger.  The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits. Conclusions and Future Work 1] The HMX based electronic initiation system permits bottom in-hole delaying in ground temperatures above 80°C (175°F). As compared to top priming and surface delaying, in-hole bottom delaying is known to improve floor quality, muckpile fragmentation uniformity and reduce oversize. 2] Field evaluation of the HMX initiation system at the Lihir Mine is continuing. 3] Work on the next generation of the HMX initiation system is underway and will bring with it expanded application range and flexibility.

THE nature of certain pernicious dusts commonly encountered in the removal of iron ore from the underground mines of the Lake Superior district is recognized, and appropriate measures for the protection of individuals subjected to these dusts have been applied in most mines for more than to years. Undoubtedly the principal concern has been demanded by dusts that contain as a constituent silicon dioxide in its free or uncombined state, the mineral we all know as quartz or chert. Investigators1 agree that among the factors that determine injurious exposure are: the composition of the dust, the concentration suspended at the breathing level and the duration of the exposure. We have on hand data that describe the experience of several underground iron-ore mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin in regard to these factors, which in a large measure also reflect the general experience of the other mines of the area. We believe that a discussion of these data will indicate the effectiveness of the dust-control methods that have been considered good practice and that have been employed over a long period of time. A silicosis-prevention program was ini¬tiated by the iron mines of the Upper Peninsula in 1934 and records of mine dustiness are available from that date to the present time. For dust conditions previous to 1934 the results of observations conducted in other industries can be utilized together with local information pertaining to the development and initial application of rock-drilling equipment. DEVELOPMENT OF ROCK DRILLS The earliest percussion rock drill that later had any industrial use was patented in this country in 1851.2 This machine was later modified and improved in many respects but its piston-type design remained standard for drilling equipment in most mines for the next 63 years.3 The piston drill was operated either by air or by steam. It employed a solid drill steel, fastened directly to the reciprocating piston. The drilling was done dry except in holes directed at an angle below the horizontal. For these water was manually injected into the hole and the pumping action of the rod expelled the sludge. The dry cuttings from drillings inclined above the horizontal fell from the hole by their own weight. A development of major importance from the standpoint of dust generation and control occurred with the invention by J. G. Leyner of a hammer-type rock drill that embodied the essential feature of a drill steel with a hollow core. His patent was secured in 1897. The machine was a radical departure in drilling method. AN unusual engineering achievement in the Gulf Coast last year was the drilling of a wildcat well in the swamps of Louisiana, using direct current. More unusual was the fact that it was necessary to house a diesel engine and generator on a barge in order to supply power. The remoteness of the well made it necessary to transport living quarters and drilling equipment to the location by means of barges, and involved the digging of a canal from a lake to the location, approximated one mile. The drilling equipment used on this well consisted of two generating units, each having one 210-hp. six-cylinder @$-in. bore type VDMA, 600 r.p.m. diesel engine, direct connected to a type CD-169, 125-kw., 250-volt direct current generator, which in turn is direct connected to a type CD-105, 15-kw. 250-volt exciter. One of these motors operates the draw works, one the mud pump, and one a duplicate spare. The generating equipment on the barge was approximately 250 ft. from the derrick, the control wires being brought from the derrick to the generator barge enclosed in a standard fire hose. This is an original idea for confining the con- 11.01 wires in one cable; obtaining minimum space and ample protection. Both control and power lines were suspended on poles. This well was at Lake Grande Ecaille Dome, which was located by seismograph in 1928. Fig. 1 shows the derrick, power barge and living quarters where direct G. E. current was used with rotary drilling equipment.

The time effect in reheating certain steels below the critical range is very marked. The increased toughness, shock-resisting power, and machinability of steel subjected to a long, high drawing temperature has been thoroughly demonstrated and is of practical importance, particularly in the manufacture of "smokeless" rifle-barrel steel. The time effect in tempering is most important when a maximum drawing effect is desired, in which case the highest physical properties as well as ease of machining are important considerations. These are the conditions in drilling a rifle barrel. A hole, 0.30 in. in diameter and 24 in. long for the Springfield rifle, and 30 in. long for the Russian military rifle, has to be drilled in the heat-treated material. This barrel-drilling operation is probably the most difficult one in rifle manufacture, and anyone who has been connected with rifle manufacture knows how seriously production is affected when "hard" or non-uniform steel for barrels is encountered. The importance of high physical properties (tensile strength, toughness and resilience) in a rifle barrel is obvious. The physical properties of two different lots of barrel steel are given below. The first lot, No. 1, gave serious trouble in the drilling operation; the second gave no trouble at all.

Advanced communication and monitoring systems were developed and demonstrated in three underground mines representing different mining techniques, geographical areas, and material mined. The first mine was a large coal mine in western Pennsylvania that used room and pillar techniques and continuous mining methods. The system developed for this mine provided private telephone channels, environmental monitoring, and control of underground equipment, all on a single coaxial cable, with all system operations under the direction of a minicomputer. Many advanced features were incorporated into the system, such as paging of roving personnel, two-way section wireless, through-the-earth emergency communication, and redundant signal paths. Television was multiplexed into the system for underground equipment surveillance. A hoist radio system completed the complement of equipment at the mine. The second mine was a magnetite ore mine in eastern Pennsylvania that used block caving mining techniques. A radio system was developed that provided two-way communications between trackless vehicles and roving personnel. A unique system of uhf/vhf repeaters combined with a flleaky-feeder" transmission line offered operational and emergency features not previously found in mine communication systems. Evacuation alarming, personnel paging, fan-hole drill operator communications, and maintenance and safety vehicle dispatch were provided. The system required no dispatcher and operated during power failure. A hoist communications/shaft inspection system completed the installation. The third mine was a deep silver mine in the Cour d’Alene district of Idaho. The system developed for this mine utilizes a single wire pair to provide up to 14 voice channels. A unique combination of PBX, telephone carrier system, and intercoms offered private conversations, selective signaling, and emergency backup communications. Two hoist communication systems were installed to provide a voice link and in-cage belling signal between hoistman and cage.

In South Carolina and Georgia an area about 20 miles wide situated near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain and extending from the vicinity of Columbia, S.C. southwestward about 180 miles to the vicinity of Macon, Georgia is the principal kaolin-producing area of the world. It is especially important as the world&apos;s major source of clay used for paper coating. Essentially all of the land known or likely to be productive of quality kaolin in this area is now owned or controlled by producing companies. The least-fully developed portion is that in the vicinity of Wrens, Georgia which has been explored and developed since 1961. For the two decades following the end of world war II, demand for kaolin increased at approximately twice the rate for other industrial minerals. From 1945 to 1965 production increased four-fold. Since 1965 the rate of increase has been less, but the outlook now is that production and demand will double at least once again before the year 2000. A substantial part of this increased demand has come, and will continue to come, from industrial development, especially in the paper industry, outside the United States. The general effect, in addition to a continuing increase in production in the U.S., will be to cause: 1. Intensive research for development of more effective and more economical methods of beneficiation; 2. Concerted research effort to find an economical way of modifying high-viscosity kaolin so that it can be used for paper coating; 3. More active exploration in the U.S. and overseas, especially for deposits to supply the foreign markets; 4. More intensive study of the geological factors responsible for the accumulation of commercial deposits of kaolin; 5. Some modest rise in price, relative to the cost of other industrial minerals. The effect on kaolin producing region of Georgia and South Carolina will be to cause: 1. Working of progressively lower-grade deposits; 2. An increase in the acceptable thickness of overburden; 3. Mining of deposits farther down-dip, the use of which is now inhibited by large volumes of groundwater; 4. Increased threat of invasion of the kaolin in industry&apos;s market by substitute materials; 5. A substantial increase in concern over environmental factors; 6. More attention to be paid to the large opportunity offered for mining of silica sand and other co-products.
