YEAR after year, the kaolin industry of the United States has been setting new production records and making better products. High-grade paper, pottery, and rubber clays are produced in this country mostly in the South. Georgia alone contributes over 70 pct and South Carolina almost 20 pct of the total domestic output. Residual kaolin is mined in North Carolina, highly plastic but naturally sandy Tertiary (Eocene) potting clays are worked in north central Florida, and good white clays are produced in several other states, but the main sources of kaolin or china clay have been numerous deposits in the Tuscaloosa (Upper Cretaceous) formation. This formation of generally sandy sediments is called the Middendorf member in older geologic reports and corresponds in age with some of the New Jersey clays. As shown in fig. 1, it crops out almost continuously in a generally southwesterly direction across South Carolina and Georgia and into Alabama. Clay is mined from this formation in all three states but the principal producing centers lie within about 10 miles of a straight line drawn between Aiken, S. C., and a point about 10 miles south of Macon, Ga. The white kaolins of the South were recognized and used prior to the Civil War but suitable treatment processes were not introduced until World War I when imports, chiefly from England, were curtailed. Although imports of high-grade clays were resumed after 1918, the domestic industry managed to treble its prewar production record during the early 1920's and has continued to grow. Whereas the 1909 to 1913 average total production in the United States was only 132,104 short tons valued at $705,352 f.O.b. mines, the output in 1948 was 1,-568,848 tons worth $19,756,738. Paradoxically, it seems in retrospect that the early failure of the American industry to meet foreign competition was due to the superior quality of our sedimentary clays in their natural state. Kaolin, of course, is the principal decomposition product of feldspars which originate in acidic igneous rocks such as granite, aplite, alaskite, granodiorite, quartz porphyry, etc. English china clays occur in residual deposits and before they can be marketed they have to be treated to remove accompanying quartz, mica, and other impurities. Notwithstanding the relatively crude methods employed, the final product is a beneficiated clay which is subject to a certain amount of technical control as to quality and uniformity. Although the naturally concentrated deposits in Georgia and South Carolina contain some of the finest crude white kaolin in the world, even it can be made better by suitable treatment. In recent years well over half of the high-grade china clay produced in the United States has been used in making paper. Some qualities of paper clays are still produced by the dry process, or air flotation, but the paper industry's specifications have grown so exacting that wet processing was adopted and more refined methods had to be perfected. Notwithstanding notable advances in clay-preparation technology during the past decade, or possibly because these advances have implemented and encouraged technologic changes in consuming industries, demand has grown for products of higher uniform quality than can be obtained from even the best natural deposits without rigidly controlled fractionation. Largely as a result of the wide adoption of machine coating for paper, the clay industry has been obliged not merely to eliminate virtually all mineral impurities but also to segregate the clay substance itself into narrow particle-size ranges. By extraordinary coordination of sales effort and production technology, several Georgia companies manage to market a wide variety of specialized joint products but the commercial success of many producers depends upon their mining only the best parts of their deposits and then skimming the cream of this almost pure clay in order to obtain a maximum yield of kaolinite finer than about 2 microns in maximum particle size and possessing low viscosity as well as the more familiar attributes of suitable color and brightness, or reflectance. When a metal solidifies, gas, initially present in solution, may be concentrated at the grain boundaries, leading to brittleness, or it may form solid compounds which, if localized at the grain boundaries, impair the properties. On the other hand, the solid compounds formed sometimes distribute themselves more or less uniformly, and hence may be relatively harmless. If metallic oxides are heated under a partial oxygen pressure less than that corresponding to the dissociation pressure of the oxide in solution in the melt, they will decompose and oxygen will tend to be eliminated from the melt. This paper presents data on the partial oxygen pressures of copper and nickel oxides over a wide range of temperatures; it also presents data regarding the amount and nature of the gases evolved in the vacuum melting of a 3500-kg. charge of nickel-chromium alloy and gives test values indicating the improvement in impact values ascribed to vacuum melting. The results of commercial experience with a 4-ton vacuum melting and casting furnace indicate that this method entails an increase in cost of about 10 cents per pound of ingot over orthodox practice, which may be justified for special products and may be lowered if hot metal is charged into the vacuum furnace. (written discussion).—In the section of Dr. Rohn's paper describing the effect of melting -metals in vacuo, he says, "In this way plain copper, nickel and iron may be easily purified. For example, vacuum-melted copper does not contain any oxygen and for this reason it is never sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement." This statement is contrary to the results of our experiments at the Bell Telephone Laboratories on the effect of vacuum melting on the properties of copper. The term lineage was first introduced by Buergerl to denote dendritic branches, grown from a crystal nucleus during solidification from the liquid, with imper- fections in alignment of the order of 10 : to 10-4 cm. These imperfections are associated with distortions of the dendrites caused by the subsequent solidification of the inter-dendritic filling and are illustrated in Fig I. Buerger etched zinc single crystals made by the Bridgman3 method to develop this dendritic pattern and show lineage microscopically. Since maximum crystal growth in face-centered cubic metals occurs along the [IT] directions,2 lineage would appear in copper as small deviations of dendritic branches from these directions. Elam4 and others5"8 reported etching effects resulting from coring along the cube face traces of various copper alloy crystals. These traces were used by Samans8 to orient single crystals. Williamson9 noted a "lined structure (in alpha brass single crystals) consisting of an ordered arrangement of etch pits" which were probably traces of {IOO} planes but somewhat uncertain because they were never straight (that is, apparently lineage). Greningerl1 described the distortion and multiplicity of Laue spots in back reflection X ray photograms of copper single crystals showing lineage. The present investigation -includes metal-lographic, X ray, and property studies of lineage in large grain and single crystal specimens of copper. Preparation of Specimens specilnens 10 in. long 35 1/2 in. diam of oxygen-free copper (o.F.H.c.) (99.985 pet) were' melted vertically in graphite crucibles under an atmosphere of commercial nitrogen purified through a gas train including sulfuric acid, potassium chloride, magnesium chiorate, hot copper chips and phosphorus pentoxide. After a temperature of 1200°C had been maintained for 1/2 hr, the furnace was turned off and the specimens cooled at a rate of about 150°c an hour' This method of direct solidification was used by Greningerlo to produce single crystals with marked lineage and in this investigation produced a fair yield of single crystal specimens in

In a time when data has become a highly valued commodity within many mining and quarry operations, managing large amounts of current and historical information can be difficult. If not managed properly, trying to leverage the data to make informed operational decisions promotes another challenge. Geographic Information System (GIS) is an environment that uses computers and software to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data. Currently, the mining industry is faced with a challenge to produce the demanded critical metals and minerals that drive our economies. GIS is leveraged in many large mining industries today to help drive decisions, save cost and plan for future operations. Specifically in the Drilling, Blasting and Quarrying industries, data is being captured at many different levels, whether it is a subsurface geological, blast performance, quarry surveys, loading and hauling, or crushing performance. Pen and paper logs and reports compiled lack the dimension that GIS can bring for extracting value from real-time or historical data. GIS connects data to maps, integrating location data with all types of descriptive information. Paired with Artificial Intelligence, additional analytical layers can be built on platforms to extract data and automate workflows. Having the ability to encompass several forms of collected data to drive operational decisions can bring huge savings to the bottom-line. This paper will dive into the areas where GIS data can drive value into operations by assisting in the management and analysis of the types of data being captured, specifically with Drill and Blast. Whether it is tracking haul road conditions, monitoring locations of equipment, environmental conditions, quantifying blast performance or developing a quarry plan based on geological models. GIS can collectively encompass all of this data to bring tremendous value to the operations, improving safety, efficiency and production.

Flow in steep cascades may lead to the occurrence of a nearly periodic train of waves known as slug flow. This, in turn, may result in overtopping of the channel walls and problems with energy dissipation in receiving sumps. Experimental data from an operating facility was used to extend clear water technology for predicting the occurrence of slug flow to conditions with slurry flows. A design methodology and a design chart to determine the region of steady flows is presented that will permit the design engineer to avoid slug flow in cascade systems for conveyance of slurries.

40 percent of the coal reserves and 40 percent of the ouput of coal in China is of thick coal seams. The sub-level caving in Yangguan has evolved together with the hydraulic supports, to provide recovery rates today of 80 to 85 percent, waste ratios less than 10 percent and daily outputs exceeding 7,000 tonnes. Matching of rate of shearing bottom coal to caving of top coal is most important to achieve "simultaneous" operations. Spontaneous combustion in the goat, gas, including in the goal, and dust, are particular safety hazards which are combatted with various stringent measures.

This paper presents a case study of respirable dust characterization in a thin-seam coal mine in southern West Virginia. Samples were collected in various locations within the mine and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The study found high non-carbonate mineral content, particularly aluminosilicates and silica, in the dust. The results indicate that fine aluminosilicate particles may interfere with SEM-EDX analysis, leading to an underestimation of coal content. The findings highlight the importance of using multiple analytical methods to accurately characterize respirable coal mine dust.

Cook, Pottstown, Pa.:—Many friends and acquaintances seem to be under the impression that the Warwick Iron & Steel Co. received a' license from Mr. Gayley, free of cost, as an inducement to adopt the process. This impression is not correct, since the license was paid for, and I think it was the first payment that Mr. Gayley received for the use of his process. As president of the Warwick Iron & Steel Co., I am responsible for its earnings, and with only the experience at the Isabella furnaces as a guide, the directors of the company considered that there was a great risk in expending the large sum of money required for the plant. They, however, acted favorably upon my recommendation, and to this extent I am responsible for the installation at the Warwick furnaces. I made the best agreement possible with Mr. Gayley, and naturally our company received certain advantages. It will be contrary to all experience if subsequent plants do not show some improvements and economies in construction. It is to our indirect benefit that all subsequent licenses granted by Mr. Gayley should be charged at a much higher rate than we paid; and I trust that he will see to it that all such licenses granted, especially to companies making merchant iron, shall be at a maximum figure. The Warwick Iron & Steel Go. is not interested in any way in exploiting the merits of the Gayley dry-blast process; on the contrary, looking at the subject from a narrow and selfish standpoint, it is to the advantage of our company that no merchant blast-furnace competing with our iron-product should be equipped with a dry-blast plant. The melting, casting, and welding of the Raney nickel alloy (42 pct Ni-58 pct A1), a methanation catalyst useful in coal gasification, were investigated. Melting was done in graphite crucibles by heating aluminum and adding nickel using a cryolite slag cover. Casting conditions were found to be optimum when the melt temperature ranged from 1,125° to 1,200° C and the mold temperature ranged from ambient to 250° C. Suitable mold materials were found to be quartz, heat-resistant glassware, olivine, and zircon. Welding of the alloy can be accomplished using tungsten inert gas process. Tensile strength of the alloy, in the as-cast condition, was found to be 2,000 1b/sq in with an impact strength of less than 1 ft-1b. The coefficient of thermal expansion was determined to be 18.4 x 10-6/° C after heat treatment.

THE technical- advantages of adding oxygen to air and producer gas, or using it as a reactive agent, producing 400 B.t.u. gas instead of. the present 150 B.t.u., with higher flame temperatures and a reducing flame possible, with a smaller volume of gases passing through a furnace, will result in quicker melting, sharp working, and the production of a higher quality steel. Probably electric-furnace quality steel can be produced in an open-hearth furnace using oxygen. A modern, standard, 100-ton open-hearth furnace, with all equipment, costs from $350,000 to $500,000; there are about 1000 open-hearth furnaces in this country. When considering the use of oxygen in the open-hearth furnace, it is necessary to study: (1) The use of oxygen in the present furnaces, such that modification of existing furnaces and equipment cost the minimum, although the full advantages of oxygen are not thus obtainable. (2) The use of oxygen in a furnace designed for its use, producing quality and quantity steel at the lowest possible cost. This entails the junking of approximately one-half the value in existing equipment-writing off $250,000,000. The basis of such an estimate is the present cost of manufacturing open-hearth steel. Objection may be taken to some of the unit prices here given, but while some companies obtain their ores for much less, the prices quoted are -market price. They are used to show the maximum economy obtained by oxygen at that point.

The discovery well in the Rock River field, in Carbon County, Wyoming, came in May 1, 1918. The field is on a large anticline having more than 1500 ft. of closure and production is obtained from three sands of the Dakota group. At its peak, production approximated 10,000 bbl. daily and is now averaging 2200 bbl. Total production to Jan. 1, 1930, exceeded 12,500,000 barrels. So far as known to the writer, Rock River was the first light oil field in the Rocky Mountain region to be produced under what we now term unit operation. Though this type of operation was not popularly acclaimed by the oil industry, the Federal Government and the public until many years after the inception of development at Rock River, the officials of the Ohio Oil Co. when acquiring this property were fully cognizant of the economies to be effected by unit ownership and the consequent elimination of competitive drilling and producing of wells, and had this in mind at the time. Thus unit management was introduced in this field at an early date by this company. Area and Management Fig. 1 shows the location of all wells drilled on the Rock River structure and the outline of the productive area as now defined, which amounts to 1380 acres. The hachured line indicates the area now under unit ownership; originally a much larger area was so owned but leases have been canceled as progressive development indicated their lack of oil. The management and operation of the entire productive area is handled by the Ohio Oil Co., which owns the majority working interest. The Continental Oil Co. with a 20 to 35 per cent. interest in much of this acreage, and smaller interests owned by others in some of the leases, constitute the remainder of the ownership. A research effort was conducted to present or develop methodology for evaluating candidate potting materials intended for use in explosion-proof enclosures. The primary purpose was to develop acceptance guidelines based on arc decomposition products. Acceptance criteria can be based on: ? Inherent thermo-chemophysical, mechanical and electrical properties; ? Arc decomposition products: ? Nature of volatile products produced, e.g., flammability, explosivity, synergistic effects on existing environment in the enclosure, toxicity; ? Quantity produced as a function of arc power and duration; ? Acceleration aging tests to evaluate breakdown under electrical stress.

Results of initial research by the Bureau of Mines are given on the dust explosion hazard of float coal and on the related factors of occurrence, rate of production, sampling techniques, transport, and deposition of float coal. Tentatively, it is suggested that where float coal deposits prevail, a mini-mum of 80 percent incombustible be maintained in the top 1/8-inch layer to neutralize the explosion hazard of the surficial coal deposit.

The paper point out the structural openings and the localization of ore bodies. Structural openings in rocks constitute the primary permeability network for the formation of most hydrothermal ore deposits. The distribution, geometry, density, and orientation of ore bodies in structural openings are controlled by two primary factors: the far and near field stresses and the mechanical properties of rock. When stress controls the orientation and kinematics of faults and fractures in the absence of pre-existing weaknesses, ore shoot orientation is perpendicular to the fault slip vector and can be predicted by kinematic analysis. However, when structural openings form along pre-existing weaknesses, ore shoot orientation cannot always be predicted by kinematic analysis. Because we can classify ore bodies based on the types of geological structures discussed above and the variations that naturally occur from material property heterogeneity, exploration for hydrothermal ore deposits should include analysis of geologic structure and evolution, rheological variations, pre-existing weakness, and fault kinematics to evaluate structuralcontrols on localization of ore bodies.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. THE EXISTENCE of petroleum in the rocks of Ohio and Indiana seems to have been first shown by wells dug for salt. The fuel, however, was objectionable owing to its odor and inflammability. Not until the brake well was drilled in 1859 did the people appreciate the value of rock oil, and then they at once began plans to secure the coveted fuel.. The first successful well in these two states was near . Macksburg, in southeast .Ohio, where at a depth of 59 ft. (17 m.) :oil was found in commercial quantity (1860). A year later this fuel was secured on Cow Run, in the same county, and at about the same time in Noble, Morgan and perhaps other counties in that part of Ohio. The second great step in the production of oil in Ohio and Indiana was taken in 1884 when the reservoir of natural gas in the Trenton limestone of northwest Ohio was tapped, and where a year later oil was secured in the same formation. Petroleum in this limestone was obtained in Indiana in 1889.1 The third step in the production of oil' in Ohio and Indiana is associated with the Clinton sand of Ohio. Natural gas in large volume was discovered in that rock at Lancaster, in 1887, and the area has been extended until it has become the largest individual producer in the world. The presence of natural gas in such great volume all but demonstrated to the driller that-oil lay hidden near by. Soon the search for it was started but not until 1899 was petroleum in commercial quantity found in the Clinton sand, and a large pool was not located in it until 1907. The fourth step in the development of the industry was taken in 1913, when the pool in Sullivan County, in western Indiana, was opened. The producing rock is the Huron sandstone, which is the topmost member of the Mississippian system.2

The Bureau of Mines devised and demonstrated a portable linear cutting tester that directly measures and records the in situ cutting forces required of continuous-mining machine picks to it coal in underground mines. It requires only two operators to transport and operate the tester, which can be assembled and operated through a complete test cycle within a single mine work shift. This report reviews the factors considered in the design and development of the tester and the results of its system verification testing at coal mine sites.
