This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

"Ultrafine zirconium carbide powder has been synthesized using zircon concentrate and methane in a thermal plasma reactor. The effect of several experimental variables, such as power used and zircon particle size, on the conversion has been studied. A thermodynamic analysis of the possible reactions and stable compounds was performed. A mathematical model that describes the in-flight decomposition of zircon particles was developed based on a description of the temperature and velocity profiles calculated in the reactor. It was shown that the formation of zirconium carbide from zircon and methane is thermodynamically possible. Complete 'vaporization of zircon in the reactor is predicted when the particle size is below 45flm and the effective power entering the reactor is 15 kW. The powders were collected and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and chemical analysis using ICP. Results of the product analysis indicated the presence of zirconium carbide, zirconium oxide, silicon carbide and silicon oxide.IntroductionIn recent years there has been an increased interest in the production of nanometric sized powders of ceramic materials for use in advanced materials applications. One possible method to produce these powders is with a thermal plasma reactor, which offers high temperatures and fast quenching rates. This technology has been called - Thermal Plasma Synthesis - [1].Zirconium Carbide (ZrCx) has typical properties of transition metal carbides: elevated hardness - between alumina and diamond - a high melting temperature of 3420°C and high chemical stability at room temperature [2]. ZrCx has a Bl crystal structure with deficiencies in the number of carbon atoms in the cell with x between 0.6 and 1 [3]. Different methods have been used to produce ZrC, one method is by direct reaction of zirconium hydride or halide with carbon. Other methods used are direct reduction and carburization of zirconium oxide (Zr02) and reaction of metallic zirconium with a caburizing gas such as acetylene [3]. Recently small films of ZrC have been obtained using a sputtering device [4,5]. ZrC has been used in nuclear plants as a low neutron absorbing and high mechanical resistant refractory material and also as a constituent in cathodes made of UC-ZrC [6]. It is also used in the form of tubes, boats and crucibles to handle molten metals and as part of electronic devices used for thermoionic transducers. Recently ZrC has been used along with zirconium diboride (ZrB2) to produce composite materials [7,8]."

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.

In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. INTRODUCTION THE basic work of Z. Jeffries1,2,3 has long ago established the main features of grain growth in the presence of a dispersed second phase. Working with sintered specimens of initially fine grained tungsten, to which various amounts of thoria have been added, Jeffries found that grain growth was inhabited, that is, practically prevented, up to a certain annealing temperature. When this temperature, which increased with the thoria content, was exceeded, extremely large grains developed abruptly from the fine grained matrix. Such a "coarsening temperature" was later found by Gross mann13,14 in certain types of steel, while Bain showed" that in other steels grain growth was gradual, without inhibition and abrupt coarsening. Later work16,17,18,19,21 demonstrated the connection between coarsening and aluminum additions. The viewpoint that the direct cause of inhibition and coarsening in aluminum killed steels is a fine dispersion of aluminum oxide21 appears to be held quite generally, although some doubts have been voiced even very recently.20 In steels with Ti additions the titanium carbide phase is considered responsible for the inhibition effects found.20 The coarsening temperature increases, with the titanium content. That coarsening may occur, as a result of certain heat treatments, even in low carbon rimmed sheet steel, was shown by Samuels,22 He also detected coarsening in a steel ingot of similar composition, after giving it the same heat treatment as that used by him for the sheet material, In this instance the identity of the inhibiting phase has not been determined, However, Tangerding found 23 that even the few small carbide particles, which occur in carbonyl iron, have a very marked inhibitive effect. As a result of an oxidizing anneal at 850°C, large grains begin to form at the surface of the carbonyl iron specimen, and gradually grow inward as the subsurface oxidation of the carbide particles progresses and eliminates the obstruction, The carbide particles can be removed also by annealing in hydrogen, with similar results. But if the oxidizing anneal of 10 hr at 850°C in air, is followed by annealing in hydrogen for 75 hr at the same temperature, grain growth is more spectacular; usually the whole specimen is transformed into a single crystal (approx. 1,5 cm X 5 cm). The reversed procedure, that is, hydrogen annealing followed by oxidizing annealing leads to smaller grains. Tangerding arrived at the logical conclusion that there must have been in his specimens some additional obstruction to grain growth resulting from a minor impurity, other than carbon. It seems likely that this obstruction was caused by an oxide formed during the oxidizing anneal and gradually reduced during the subsequent hydrogen-annealing. Other instances of grain growth inhibition of varying severity, associated with a dispersed second phase, have been described by several authors. Notable examples: lead with 0.06 pct Cu or Ni,24 cartridge brass with 0.12 pct Cr,25 or with up to 0.15

The geomechanical environment in which highwall mining must operate represents a hybrid between surface and underground operations. Mine design must take into consideration the complexities associated with unsupported spans, pillars with extreme aspect ratios and the instability related to the interaction between coal extraction and the highwall stability. The rock mass adjacent to the highwall, and for a significant distance in, is affected by lateral stress relief and blast damage. This paper describes a rigorous site investigation program aimed at providing some of the input parameters for the design of highwall mining layouts at the Moura Mine and focuses upon defining the nature and extent of the relaxed zone behind the highwall. The combination of borehole imaging and C factor analysis allows delineation of blast damage and relaxation of the rock mass immediately adjacent to the highwall excavation, as well as the more subtle relaxation effects deeper into the rock mass. This has led to the formulation of a proposed geomechanical model for the relaxed zone for direct input into highwall instability analysis and mine design.

"The Central Bayside System Improvement Project (CBSIP) is a critical element of the Sewer System Im-provement Program (SSIP), a 20-year, $6.9-billion investment by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commis-sion (SFPUC) to upgrade San Francisco’s 100+ years old seismically vulnerable combined sewer system. The CBSIP’s centerpiece, a proposed 10,000-foot-long (3,048-meter-long) Channel Tunnel, will provide reliable and redundant gravity conveyance and storage of combined wastewater flows from the northern and central parts of San Francisco to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant (SEP) while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for combined sewer discharges to the Bay. A tunnel with a diameter of 23 to 30 feet (7 to 9 meter) is being planned using pressurized-face tunnel boring machine technology. Project challenges include tunneling through Franciscan Bedrock, mixed ground conditions in close proximity to the Bay, connector tunnels and shafts, construction in congested urban environment, and challenging real estate issues for shaft access. BACKGROUND AND NEED FOR TUNNEL The City of San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. About 850,000 people live in the city and many more come to work, for tourism, and for attending conferences. The SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco that provides energy, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco, wholesale water to three Bay Area counties, and green hydro-electrical and solar power to San Francisco municipal departments. The SFPUC wastewater system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1000 miles of collection sewers, 28 pump stations, and three wastewater treatment plants. San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. After decades of service, much of the sewer system is nearing end of its working life. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC water and wastewater infrastructure was extensive. The 11,200-foot-long (3,400-meter-long), 66-inch-diameter (1,676-mm-diameter) Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the SF wastewater system was also damaged. This force main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the SEP. The force main is at the end of its life and was not constructed to the current seismic code; in addition it has no redundancy. Figure 1 shows the project background and the force main that will be provided redundancy by the new gravity tunnel."

Fluidized - bed roasting was investigated as a means of decomposing gypsum and gypsum mixtures to produce a gas rich in sulfur dioxide and a lime or portland cement residue . Ninety- eight percent desulfurization of gypsum in a 10 - inch fluidized- bed reactor took 1.5 hours at an operating temperature between 1,200 ° and 1,225 ° C. A cement- type residue was obtained but had to be refired at 1,450 ° C before mortar prepared from it met the physical specifications for cement .

INTRODUCTION The requirement that is placed on owners and operators of underground mines to protect workers against the health hazard of inhaling radioactive materials which are short-lived decay products of 222Rn can be satisfied by applying a considerable variety of what we may call "engineering" solutions as well as a number of "administrative" remedies to the problem. The most obvious of the "engineering" approaches has always been that of forced ventilation, in which relatively clean (i.e., radon-free) air from aboveground is drawn or pushed through the mine workings by a system of fans and ducts. This relatively clean air, in sweeping through the drifts, stopes and haulageways, dilutes the radon and radon-daughter concentrations in the air of the mine, and performs the added beneficial function of removing the daughter-mixture quickly enought to limit grow-in of the longer-lived nuclides in the group that make up the "toxic trio" on which the Working Level (IM) unit is based. Effective as the dilution-ventilation method is for control of WL in most underground mining situations, however, the increasing strictness of control measures that have been imposed on the mining industry over the last two decades have demanded measures of even greater effectiveness. In times of poor markets for yellow-cake and other products of the mines, mine operators are pressed to reduce operating costs, and the installation of additional primary ventilation capacity can be a severe burden on a mine that is already laboring under an unfavorable earning power. When traditional dilution-ventilation systems alone cannot meet the requirement for WI, control, radiation safety engineers and ventilation engineers begin to look at alternatives and auxiliary methods. Since the radon which produces the toxic daughter products originates in the rock of the mine walls, and since, in most United States mines, that rock is a porous sandstone through which air can move under the effect of atmospheric pressure gradients, and through which radon can diffuse relatively freely, one way to help control the growth of WL would be to hinder the escape of radon from that reservior of porous rock. An appealing; method for hindering that natural flux of radon-polluted air from the walls of the mine has long been apparent; namely, to apply a low-permeability coating over the surface of the rock, thus sealing the radon in place and, in theory at least, preventing its escape into the mine air. Our 1970 report to the U.S. Federal Radiation Council on the subject of cost impacts of proposed changes in the occupational standards for exposure of underground uranium miners to airborne radon daughters noted the possibility of using polymeric wall sealants as a means of controlling radon-pollution of mine air. Since that time a number of reports have appeared in the technical literature advocating this technique for restraining the escape of radon from building materials, mill tailings, and other materials containing 226Ra, in addition to the surfaces of underground mine workings. During this period, some controversy has occurred over the question of the probable effectiveness of wall sealants in limiting the escape of radon from the rock. Our 1970 report speculated that flaws (cracks and "pinholes") in the coating might be all but unavoidable in practice, and that even a conservative estimate of the frequency of such flaws would lead to a prediction of ineffectiveness. Hammon et al, in a laboratory evaluation of radon sealants conducted by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the University of California in 1975 on behalf of U.S. Bureau of Mines, concluded that a wide variety of polymeric coatings would provide "nearly 100% effectiveness" in restrain¬ing escape of radon from mine wall surfaces if applied in "thicknesses between 5 and 10 mil" (125-250 [y]pm). John Franklin and co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories in Spokane, Washington, have carried the experiments with polymeric sealants through additional laboratory tests and into actual mine environments, reporting that selected sealants could provide attenuation of radon flux by a factor of four (75-80% reduction). Robert Bates and John Edwards of USBM developed a computer-assisted mathematical/physical model that predicts a relatively small effect of flaws in a low-permeability coating on the radon flux from a sandstone-type matrix. FIELD TEST Since all actual experimental work with wall sealants showed some beneficial effect on radon attenuation (even if not as exciting as the "nearly 100%" predicted by Hammon), USBM was encouraged to extend its evaluation to an actual operating uranium mine, and awarded a contract for that work to Arthur D. Little, Inc. in September 1979. We were fortunate in obtaining the voluntary cooperation of Atlas Minerals Division of Atlas Corp., who operate a mill and several underground mines in and around Moab, Utah. Atlas made available for our use a small T-shaped drift in their Pandora Mine in LaSal, Utah, and provided space for instrumentation and recordkeeping by our field crew in a surface building near the mine entry. Atlas also provided electricity and water to the test site, together with assistance in establishing necessary ventilation, removing rubble from the site, conducting periodic WL surveys and furnishing auxiliary man-power for the heavy hard work of coating the walls with gunite prior to application of the polymeric sealant. A dynamic process model for predicting the fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates with high arsenic content is presented in this work. Mass and energy balances were performed based on roasting mechanism derived from thermodynamic data of species. The reaction rate data, obtained from pilot plant studies on major reactions, were used in tuning the kinetic parameters of the model. DEAS, a dynamic simulation package, is used in setting up the fluidized bed roaster plant model. The effect of process parameters such as concentrate feed rate, concentrate composition, airflow and cooling water rate on the temperature and conversion of roasting reactions are analyzed. The plant model captures the highly transient conditions occurring during the plant start-up, shutdown and other process perturbations. The application of this model in constructing a virtual plant environment for validating the operating procedures and operator training is presented.

The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. "Hundreds of diamonds have been found in the United States. The majority of the discoveries occurred during the 19th century as a by-product of placer gold mining. Most of these early diamond finds have no known source, and in many cases are situated in areas unfavorable for diamond exploration based on current models that require kimberlite or lamproite to be emplaced in a stable Archean craton or Proterozoic craton margin.Diamonds have also been recovered in situ from lamproite at Murfreesburo, Arkansas, from kimberlite in the Lake Ellen region of Michigan, and in several kimberlites in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district. Unverifed reports also suggest that diamonds may have been recovered from other related intrusions at a number of localities in the United States.IntroductionTo date, diamonds have been recovered in situ from kimberlite in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district and from a kimberlite in Michigan. Additionally, diamonds have been recovered from lamproites in Arkansas. Diamonds have also been reported from kimberlite in Kansas, and from peridotite in New York and Maryland. However, these latter reports have not been verified."

An assessment is made of the possible scope for the use of activated charcoal as the solid adsorbent in an upflow fluidized-bed contactor, and a pilot-plant programme for the recovery of low concentrations of dissolved gold in this contactor is described. The increasing activity in oil shale has had a tendency to direct the attention of the industry to any substance from which gasoline or other oils can be secured . Cannel coal for many years has been known, as a source of oil and formerly it was the only substance from which kerosene was obtained . The name of coal oil was given to kerosene because it was derived from cannel coal before any flowing wells were brought in in the United States . In an isolated region in Southern Utah there is an unusually thick and clean bed of cannel coal which laboratory experiments indicate can be made to yield about seventy gallons of oil to the ton . This coal was first described in Bulletin 341 of the United States Geological Survey under the title of Colob coal field . This field lies at the western and southern base of the Colcb plateau and extends from the town of Cedar City southward to Kanarra and then southeastward to the town of Mount Carmel . Cedar City is 35 miles south of east from Lund on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad which is the nearest railroad point . Mount Carmel is about 90 miles south of Marysvale , on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad , which is the nearest railroad point from the eastern end of the field . The Colob coal occurs in Lower Cretaceous rocks and a number of wagon mines have been opened on the seam in the vicinity of Cedar City , Kanarra , and Mt. Carmel , but between these places the field has been very little prospected . The cannel coal , so far as known at present , is limited to a small area on the head waters of the north fork of the Virgin River in Township 39 and 40 South , Range 9 East . In this region it occurs as a bed 5-1 /2 feet thick over which lies a layer of bituminous coal 2 feet and 5 inches thick .

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

Molten Salt electrolytic processes offer unique opportunities to extract and refine metals where gaseous or metallothermic reduction, hydro metallurgical extraction and aqueous electrolytic methods are thermodynamically constrained. Production of aluminum and magnesium by molten salt electrolysis are well known commercial processes. Several other reactive metals, such as lanthanides and actinides, as well as beryllium and calcium, make use of molten salt processing for extraction and refining. This presentation describes the science of molten salt chemistry and electrochemistry for winning and refining of several metals. In addition, recovery of metals from waste process salts by molten salt reduction as well as oxidation have been discussed. Material issues in design of molten salt reactors have been included. Various applications have been presented through case studies. Experimental data have been included to justify the suitability as well as limitations of these specific processes.

"The contract C931 of the downtown line 3 (DTL3) mass rapid transit system of Singapore includes half a kilometer twin tunnels running between Mattar and Macpherson stations. An EPB TBM of 6.6 m diameter was used to excavate both of these tunnels. The tunnels pass predominantly through a very stiff silty/clayey fine to coarse sand from the Old Alluvium Formation. In this paper, TBM selection procedure, TBM performance evaluation, and some of the tunneling operation challenges with the TBM in the Old Alluvium Formation are discussed. In this regard, soil conditioning trial tests were performed to resolve the clogging issue and low TBM performance. Thorough TBM operational data analysis was performed to detect high soil abrasivity, backfill grout leakage, and foam nozzle clogging. The results of some of the applied modifications are also discussed to show their effects on the TBM performance improvement. Finally, some of the challenging TBM design specifications are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground construction in Singapore has been increased in the last 30 years due to the demand for public transportation systems and the limited space above the ground for the infrastructure development. Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has 21 km total route length and consists of 16 stations. DTL3 Contract C931 runs between Mattar station and MacPherson station. The construction works in this contract include twin bored tunnels of 6.6 m diameter and 450 m length and a TBM launch shaft of nearly 30 m depth. The tunnels run in urban area below Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway tunnel (KPE), Kallang River Canal, and Circuit Link. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the tunnels in between two subway stations. The tunnels were excavated by an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the Old Alluvium (OA) formation, a challenging geological formation in the sense of its abrasivity and stiffness. The Old Alluvium Formation mostly includes stiff to very stiff clayey and silty sand. The soil is un-weathered cemented to semi-cemented dense, mainly with a low permeability coefficient of 10-7 m/s and high SPT values (almost 100). The soil is classified as “very high abrasive” according to NTNU SAT test classification (SAT value of 15 to 42). The construction of the first tunnel drive was slowed down due to a number of factors related to soil conditioning and TBM operation. In this regard, a thorough analysis of the TBM operational parameters from the excavated sections was performed to identify the problems in time to prevent unwanted construction delays in the subsequent sections. In the following sections, a brief overview of the criteria used for TBM selection is presented at first. Then, the results from the analyses and tests performed to assess soil conditioning, grout leakage, and soil abrasion are presented. The last section discusses some of the tunneling design features that challenged the TBM operation in this project."

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed.
