This paper provided an overview of characteristics of limonite ores as well as their influence on sintering performance. Evaluation experiments focusing on basic characteristics, granulation characteristics, and high temperature sintering characteristics had been conducted by using two types of limonite ores, then the principles of high effective utilization technology of limonite ores were discussed, and the sintering pot tests were conducted. Limonite ores possessed low total iron content, high combined water content, high SiO2 content, large average particle size, low adhering particles proportion, high porosity, high water absorption rate, short water absorbing time, poor granulation ability, high melt formation ability, low melt fluidity ability, low melt penetration ability, high melt absorption ability, low bonding phase strength, and high forming ability of SFCA. By taking the technical measures of ore-proportioning optimization, increasing the proportion of burntlime and segmentation granulation, the usage of limonite ores could reach 50% in sintering.

James W. Neill, Pasadena, Cal. (communication to the Secretary*):—Professor Hofnlan's paper brings the art up to date. As I was one of the pioneers in this business, I beg to give the following incomplete data regarding my efforts in this line. In the year 1883, while I was in charge of the smelting-operations at Mine La Motte, Mo., there mas at the concentrator an unusually large protluction of a middle product, locally called " iron," which carried considerable values in nickel and cobalt, and which it was desirable, for this reason, to treat by itself. The works could not spare a furnace for the purpose; and to handle this product I improvised a " roast-hearth " from an old " lead-hearth." This was a small cast-iron furnace of the uslial construction, about 2 by 4 ft. in dimensions, with a hollon- cast-iron back, through which the wind circulated before entering the tuyeres. I had a cast-iron grate made to fit this hearth, and placed it tlush with the lip, or apron, and above the tuybres. On this grate, which had round holes about 0.25 in. in diameter, and a total surface of about 20 by 40 in., I roasted the nickeliferous pyrite product; starting the fire with kindling, then adding charcoal, and then gradually feeding the sulphides with a shovel, so as to cover the fire, choke down blow-holes, and get an even bed. Blast at a pressure of 3 or 4 oz. was supplied by a Can-blower. When a cake of roasted material had formed, it was removed with a steel bar, or fork, to the lip of the furnace, and thence into a wheel-barrow. The fine material which had renlained unmelted, but very hot, on top of the cake would promptly ignite when the cake was broken up and removed. The fire would then be covered with fresh material and

"Dust control in high-production longwalls requires attention to operating practices and ventilation schemes. Several studies have shown that the shearer is the major source of dust on a longwall face. Support movement has not been regarded as a major source of dust in US longwalls. Yet, under certain conditions, 31% of the shearer operator's dust exposure can be due to support movement.Several methods have been developed for the control of shield-generated dust. But the need for better methods is apparent. In this paper, the amount of airborne, respirable dust generated per shield move is estimated from specially designed experiments on longwall faces. Ten experiments were conducted on five longwall faces in four mines. Each experiment involved one face visit and lasted three to six hours. The contribution of shield movement to the airborne, respirable dust concentration immediately downwind of the shield move varied between 0.12 and 1.75 mg/m3 in the five longwall faces. The mass of airborne, respirable dust gener-ated by shield movement was found to vary between 39 and 386 mg per shield move. The results from this study reveal that control of dust from longwall shields requires a combi-nation of approaches involving alternative operating prac-tices, reducing shield dust generation rate, increasing face air flow and decreasing personnel exposure.IntroductionIn 1992, longwall mining accounted for about 36% of US underground coal production, a 240% increase from a decade ago. The absolute longwall tonnages were 46 and 133 Mt (51 and 146 million st), respectively. Compared with room-and¬pillar mining systems, the longwall mining system is charac¬terized by higher recovery, enhanced safety and higher pro¬ductivity.However, personnel dust exposure on a longwall face is higher than in other types of mining. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, fewer longwalls were in continuous compliance with the applicable dust standard in 1992 than in 1989.Controlling shearer-generated dust and reduction of per-sonnel exposure to airborne dust have commanded attention in the design of longwall faces, operational practices and ventilation schemes. Studies in the United States and abroad have revealed that support-generated dust can be a major obstacle to compliance under certain conditions (Becker et al., 1989; Bradley et al., 1983; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983; Jankowski et al., 1990; Organiscak et al., 1985)."

A small-scale laboratory coke oven similar to those described by Swiniarski, Cryan, and Altieri and Fuchs, Sandhoff, Taylor, and Gauger was built by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. Tests made since that time have indicated that such a small oven is of questionable value in predicting the coking pressures to be expected in commercial coke ovens. This summary of the work done has been prepared at the suggestion of the Advisory Committee to the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association Survey of Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals.

"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted the Bureau's Mount 'Weather Testing Adit,Mount Weather, The author acknowledges the assistance and cooperation of Wing G. "INTRODUCTION The relative value of the various individual physical and chemical properties of coke as a measure of its performance in the blast furnace as aroused considerable controversy but it is generally agreed that uniformity in these properties is extremely important if maximum mum pip-iron production is to be attained. The control of,the bulk density or weight per cubic feet of the coal charge in the coke ovens is a major, and frequently overlooked, factor in producing a uniform product and in efficient operation of the coke plant.This report presents a brief discussion of the general problem of bulk-density control and the results of tests on samples of coke-oven charges from several operating plants experiencing difficulties due to lack of adequate control. These tests covered the effect of moisture and oil content on the bulk density of the coal. Some tests on the effect of a wetting agent and furnenous of gained were also made. A description of the methods used to determine the bulk density of the coals studied in this investigation and of the methods used to apply oil to the coal at byproduct-coke plants are included in this product. No theoretical analysis of the data presented in this report, because the primary purpose of the investigation was to obtain data of immediate practical value to the plants concerned."

Solution flow in leach dumps and heaps or in columns of representative rock has been the subject of only limited studies. This is a regime involving unsaturated flow in semiconsolidated rock with a wide size distribution. Even the concepts of continuous flow systems are fairly recent, and have evolved from the search for better methods of operating industrial chemical reactors. (1-3) Waste rock consolidation and permeability play a key role in solution flow characteristics. Harris (4) suggested that bulk density variations in a leach dump could alter the particle-to-particle contact, and that large particle aggregates could act like single, large particles . In the limiting case where the bulk density approaches that of the undisturbed, consolidated rock, the entire waste unit would behave as a single particle. Roman (5) treated the phenomenon of bulk density and its effect on consolidation in terms of lixiviant flow paths or solution channeling in leach dumps. Like Harris, he assumed that no solution moved through particles or particle aggregates associated with zones of high bulk density. Solution flow paths are thus effectively separated by particle regimes, creating solution channels in the waste body. While some attempts have been made to describe solution flow in leach dumps and related systems by utilizing computer model approaches and laboratory- scale simulations (5,6), there have been no direct, large-scale observations of solution movement in channels or of the actual channel sizes and distributions within a waste body. This paper describes a series of experiments involving large-scale, controlled waste leaching tests, conducted over a period of several years, and aimed at providing some direct observation of the changes in waste consolidation and permeability, the size and distribution of solution channels, the movement of such channels with continued solution application, and other features relating to solution flow during the leaching of low-grade waste. These results are then combined with mineralogical information to explain observed leach behavior.

A PROPER consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. MANUFACTURE OF WROUGHT IRON The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identi-fied with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval com-pared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man's needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the fore-runner in principle of today's scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort's invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture. ALTHOUGH vanadium is an important constituent of almost every brand of high-speed steel manufactured today, little is known as to its role in this series of alloys. The now standard 18 per cent tungsten and 4 per cent chromium constituents were the result of developments and improvements before 1903. In that year, vanadium was added to the steel by Dr. J. A. Mathews. This proved to be an outstanding con-tribution, so that the standard high-speed steel of today is generally referred to as the 18-4-1 type-18 per cent W, 4 per cent Cr and 1 per cent V. Various modifications have been attempted, since then, but with the exception of the introduction of cobalt, no striking improvements have occurred. Vanadium has been increased to 2 per cent in many of the common brands, and at least one brand contains 5 per cent V in addition to the usual tungsten and chromium. The carbon has been gradually increased so that it is not uncommon to find 0.80 per cent in the standard grade, although the carbon in the 5 per cent vanadium steel mentioned above is approximately 1 per cent, and even 1.2 per cent has been made experimentally. The role of vanadium has never been well understood, and although vanadium has been increased to 2.5 and even 5 per cent in certain high speed steels, it has not been generally established that the higher vanadium contents 'result in superior cutting properties. However, in all of the investigations, of which the writers are aware, the interrelation of the vanadium and carbon contents was not considered as a prime factor. The carbon content was held at 1.2 per cent or less-generally at the usual 0.65 to 0.75 per cent.

The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IN any discussion of this very large subject we are confronted at the outset with so many obstacles that at best only a fragmentary and rather disconnected presentation can be made of it, and my hope is that building from the few facts I have to offer a more complete knowledge may be secured. In the whole intermountain and Pacific. Coast region, west of Pueblo, Col., and from Canada to Mexico, there is no production of pig iron, and steel production is confined to the manufacture of a small amount of open-hearth steel from scrap. When we consider the area, the resources, and the several centers of population, this condition seems anomalous, even in. the face of every counter argument as to cheap water transportation, or other means of transport from the Atlantic Seaboard or from the iron and steel centers of the Middle West. This comatose condition, if such a term may be applied, is certainly riot due to a lack of all the essential materials and factors for success in iron and steel smelting, but is rather, I think, due largely to the general fact that it is only within a comparatively few years that the centers of population on the Pacific Coast have attained a size that would entitle them to the position of distributing or freight centers, or that the "back country" has been enough built up to make it sufficiently interesting to the railroads to foster trade from the local centers to the interior points rather than seek to supply such local centers and the interior by a transcontinental haul.

The technological advances in efficient, rapid, and non-destructive hyperspectral core logging systems for systematic mineral mapping have led to the discovery and exploitation of new mineral deposits Hyperspectral imaging in the long-wave infrared range has been recently used successfully to identify various phosphatebearing minerals (monazite, xenotime, and britholite), with limited work on apatite associated with mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions. In this study we investigate the effectiveness of a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system with long-wave infrared (LWIR) bandwidthsto identify apatite in the Upper Zone of the Bushveld Complex. The accuracy of the HSI results was validated by mineralogical and geochemical data. The two apatite-enriched zones detected by HSI suggesting widespread development of apatite throughout the uppermost 600 m of the Upper Zone. The lower apatite-enriched zone is approximately 40 m thick, while the upper apatite-enriched zone is about 23 m thick, consistent with previous thickness determinations by traditional logging and analytical methods. Spectral mixing observed in the response of apatite is ascribed either to the common association of apatite and olivine in these rocks, or to differences between the spatial resolution of the hyperspectral image and the size of apatite grains. The VNIR-SWIR wavelength region did not show prominent spectral features of apatite. Nonetheless, HSI in the LWIR range is effective in mapping apatite and should therefore be considered as an exploration tool. This research advances our knowledge of the reflectance spectroscopy of REE-bearing minerals, which makes it easier to detect, identify, and quantify REE-bearing silicate minerals by HSI.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a human factors analysis of hazards associated with roofholting activities in underground coal mines. Emphasis was placed on hazards related to the movement of the drill-head boom or mast of a roof bolting machine. The objective was to identify hazards and recommend solutions. The data-collection effort consisted of analysis of U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration accident data; visits to underground mines and interviews with experienced roof bolting machine operators; discussions with roof bolting machine manufacturers; interviews with workers injured while performing roof bolting tasks; and reviews of research on roof bolting safety. A set of recommendations to increase the safety of roof bolting operations was developed. In particular, the following list of recommendations was presented in ranking order: (1) use an interlock device to cut off power to controls when an operator is out of position, (2) place fixed barriers at pinch points, (3) provide appropriate control guarding, (4) reduce fast-feed speed, (5) use automatic cutoff switches at pinch points, (6) redesign control bank to conform to accepted ergonomic principles, and (7) use resin insertion tools and resin cartridge retainers.

To improve mine safety, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a search for better materials and systems to anchor roof bolts. This report describes a study on the ability of a gypsum-based anchoring medium to withstand short- and long-term loads. Results showed that 2-ft-long bolts anchored with gypsum that was injected as plaster slurry at a 0.370 water-cement ratio and cured for 10 min sustained pull test loads equal to the ultimate strength of the bolt steel (about 37,000 lb). For comparison, the minimum required capacity is 17,600 lb. Long-term loads of 15,500 lb were sustained with estimated 10-yr movement of less than 1/2 in. Two-foot-long bolts anchored with gypsum installed in a cartridge in which the water was contained in tiny capsules sustained a pull test load of about 30,300 lb at a 0.319 water-cement ratio and 10-min cure time. At a 0.288 water-cement ratio, load capacity was about 37,000 lb. The lower load capacities of cartridge-installed bolts resulted primarily from the remnants of the water-wax capsules. Above 10,000 lb, creep movement of cartridge-grouted bolts appears excessive, but longer bolts may be capable of resisting creep better.

"Purpose and Nature of Tests:The rapidly increasing use of motor vehicles and trucks in the United States is creating an entirely new problem in the proper ventilation of tunnels, subways and other confined spaces through which such machines must pass. This problem has become of immediate importance because a tunnel 3,000 ft. long is being designed to pass under the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey. Another tunnel at Pittsburgh 5,700 ft. long through the South Hills, is already under construction, and a third tunnel, 6,000 ft. between Boston and Past Boston is proposed. It is probably that other tunnels will be started in various parts of the United States in the near future.The ventilation of such tunnels is a serious matter, on account of the poisonous nature of automobile exhaust gases. It not uncommon to read about finding a man dead in his garage. Generally this happens on a cold, winter morning, after he has been running the engine with the doors and windows closed."
