The mining industry of Japan is not very large, but it is very old. Some of the mines have 1000 years of history. At Nara, the capitol 1300 years ago, the great Buddha of bronze that was cast at that time was of metal mined from several localities in Japan including the Akenobe-Ikuno district, one of the present Mitsubishi properties. Methods of smelting copper and iron, it is believed, came from China via Korea. A characteristic of the Japanese mining industry today is one of buying abroad and treating at home, a variety of ores of different compositions. All in all, Japan's mineral deposits under its own flag are inadequate for its great industrial strengths.

Oil based drilling fluids utilize a number of industrial mineral products to accomplish oil and gas drilling in several environments where water based drilling fluids are less effective or inappropriate. These industrial minerals include: organically modified bentonite, organically modified lignite, barite, hematite, mica, calcium chloride and other salts. A variety of organic products are also utilized in oil based drilling fluid formulations. Oil based drilling fluids are preferred in several drilling situations because: they can be used to drill through water sensitive formations; they produce holes that are very close to the drill bit gauge; they exhibit high temperature stability; they are more environmentally acceptable; they minimize producing formation damage; they provide faster drilling rates when used with new polycrystalline diamond drill bits; they minimize pipe sticking and lost rig time.

Einführung in die Problematik 1.1 Die Bedeutung des Schildausbaus Seit fast 30 Jahren ist die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Primärenergiemarkt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch einen von Erdöl and Erdgas geführten and insbesondere gegen die Steinkohle gerichteten Verdrängungswettbewerb gekennzeichnet, der den Steinkohlenbergbau zu tiefgreifenden RationalisierungsmaBnahmen zwang. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es Anfang der 70er Jahre zur Einrührung des Schildausbaus, der eine erhebliche Produktivitätssteigerung in den Strebbetrieben zur Folge hatte and damit die Uberlebenschance des Steinkohlenbergbaus in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland enorm verbesserte. Der Grund hierfdr lag darin, daB der Schildausbau im Vergleich zu dem vor ihm eingesetzten Rahmen- and Einzelstempelausbau eine wesentlich hdöhere Ausbauleistung erbrachte, weil er sich weit weniger empfindlich gegen Hangendausbruche and aus dem Alten Mann hereinbdschende Bruchberge erwies. So erklärt sich auch die stürmische Entwicklung and die schnelle Verbreitung des Schildausbaus. Bereits 1975 stammte rd. 50 % der Fdrderung aus Schildstreben, 1990 waren es fiber 75 % and heute sind es fiber 90 %. 1.2 Die Staubentstehung beim Schildausbau Die Erfolge des Schildausbaus sind unbestritten. Jedoch nahmen :nit seiner Einführung die Probleme der Staubentstehung and Staubbekämpfung im Vergleich zum Ein zelstempel- and Rahmenausbau erheblich zu. MaBgebend dafür sind hauptsächlich folgende Gründe: - Abbau von dozen nit gebrächen, weichen Hangendschichten, die erst durch Schildausbau abbaubar wurden, - Zerkleinerung des auf den breiten Kappen aufliegenden Bergematerials infolge der höheren Ausbaustiltzkrafte des Schildausbaus, Zermahlen der sick in die Spaltabdichtungen hineinarbeitenden Bergestückchen, - Erhöhung der Wettergeschwindigkeit infolge der durch die Baufarm des Schildausbaus bedingter. Verkleinerung des Strebquerschnitts verbunden mit der Aufwirbelung and Aussichtung von Staub, - Aufwirbelung von bereits abgelagertem Staub im Bruchraum beim Hereinbrechen der Dachschichten. Die genannten Gründe treten zumeist nicht in jedem Abbaubetrieb gleichzeitig auf. Sie rind vielmehr u.a. abhängig vom Ausbautyp, von den Gebirgsverhältnissen and von der Abbaugeschwindigkeit. S. potash producer-whether in New Mexico, California, or Utah--once simply took from the ground a mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, crushed it to a maximum of 10 mesh, and separated the two salts by physical methods. He piled the sodium chloride on the desert and sold the potassium chloride to fertilizer mixing companies. Seven companies in the Carlsbad basin of New Mexico now use at least three basic processes for making the separation and at least three more processes have been or are under investigation. Low Strain Pile Integrity Testing has been used in India since 1990’s and several have tried to demonstrate the utility and benefits of this method. However, use of this technology was limited till 1998 as not enough data maybe was not available to justify its use and application on major infrastructure and real estate projects. The first author has done significant work in this method resulting in its use in practically all sectors of the industry that use concrete bored pile foundations as a supporting element. The paper explains various signal enhancers or modifiers involved in processing of low strain test data and its implication on the final output. It also describes how the method can lead to abuse or can provide poor interpretation if incorrectly used. The current effort is to demonstrate that data collection and evaluation becomes complex with changes in soil stratum and pile profile. The paper highlights the present testing practices and provides a guideline for classification of pile integrity into few simple categories in Indian context rather than writing complex interpretations.

One portion of this project was to test a blast shield and to design some features for a novel tunneling method termed the Automated Drill and Blast System (ADBS). The ADBS tunneling concept was developed for the design of an excavation system of greater efficiency than conventional drill, blast, and muck (DBM) systems by minimizing the down time and approaching the non-cyclic efficiency of continuous tunneling by means of small charge blasting. Small charge blasting uses simultaneously detonated, small light charges (less than 200 grams per hole) in four to eight shallow (24 to 36 in. deep) holes usually in a line. Limitation of the total explosive per blast reduced air blast overpressure, fly rock velocity, vibration, and noise. Thus, shielded equipment can remain at the face and a tunnel shield permits support personnel to work outby the shield at all times. The ADBS equipment will be composed of five components: (1) a chassis, upon which is mounted automated mucking equipment, and a frame which carries (2) the hydraulic drill(s), (3) load/blast system(s), and (4) control cab(s). The blast shield may have its own mounting. Ventilation, horizontal, and vertical alignment controls are incorporated in the system. The blast sheild, which protects personnel outby the advance equipment from air blast overpressure, fly rock, and gases, was tested with full scale small charge blasting. A blast shield was designed, fabricated, and tested under conditions anticipated for a working model. The shield was designed to expand to fit the tunnel shape, to seal itself to the tunnel periphery, and to contain air blast, fly rock, and gaseous explosion products. In addition, the shield, which was lined on the inby side with rubber belting, reduced the blast noise level outby the shield to 113 dBA or less, which is very near permissible levels. The test results show conclusively that the shield concept is viable. Based partially on the shield tests, a blast resistant control cab was designed to be located on the equipment chassis inby the blast shield to protect operators during blasting, and to contain all the controls necessary for system operation and safety. The economics of tunnel driving using the ADBS were compared with those of DBM. Four rock types, which determine advance rate, and four cost categories were examined. The results of this analysis are as follows: 1. ADBS advance rate is faster because equipment remains at the face and operation procedes semi-continuously. 2. ADBS bit and explosive cost (which accounts for 4%o of the total advance cost) is higher than for DBM. 3. ADBS equipment cost, on a per foot basis, is lower than for DBM. 4. Due to a reduced labor force, ADBS labor cost is lower than for DBM. 5. Because of the overbreak reduction due to controlled blasting, ADBS tunnel support cost is lower than for DBM. 6. On a per foot basis, total ADBS advance cost is from 17% to 20% lower than for DBM, depending on tunnel diameter and rock type. The small charge method greatly reduces ground vibration, increases personnel safety by limiting excessive fracture, and decreases tunnel support requirements by reducing overbreak. The overall analysis, tests, and results to date show that the Automated Drill and Blast System may be developed into a viable tunnel excavation method. The method also may be adapted to use in the mining of ore. For some types of mining operations, the cyclic nature of conventional drill and blast methods may not be a disadvantage, either where the drilling and mucking may proceed simultaneously or where the operations are carried out in adjacent working faces. The proposed method would find application where continuous methods of excavation are desirable.

FerrAus Ltd's Robertson Range and Davidson Creek Projects are located in the Hamersley Province about 100 km east of Newman, Western Australia. Significant iron mineralisation defined by an aggressive exploration program within the Marra Mamba Iron Formation is shallowly north dipping at Davidson Creek, and mainly shallowly east dipping at Robertson Range, forming part of a regional scale anticline with the granitic and greenstone basement of the Sylvania Inlier as its core. With minor exceptions, the stratigraphy is comparable with that seen in the main Hamersley Basin. Granite and greenstone basement rocks of the Sylvania Inlier are unconformably overlain by shales and volcanic rocks of the Fortescue Group. The overlying Hamersley Group is locally represented by interbedded chert, banded iron-formation (BIF) and shales of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (Nammuldi, MacLeod and Mount Newman Members), and dolomites, cherts, BIF and shales of the Wittenoom Formation. Iron enrichment occurs predominantly in the Mount Newman Member, and to a lesser extent in the West Angela Member of the Wittenoom Formation. Enrichment varies from 20 - 30 m in thickness in elongate bodies up to 3 km in strike length, and generally thins down dip. At Davidson Creek iron mineralisation is a haematite-goethite-ochreous goethite assemblage, while at Robertson Range this assemblage is consistently overprinted by a later, goethitic alteration related to 'hardcap' weathering. Near surface hardcap alteration in both project areas comprises more siliceous, aluminous and vitreous goethite. Initial exploration completed by Rio Tinto Exploration between 1999 and 2001 indicated the potential for about 20 Mt of iron mineralisation at Robertson Range. Since 2005 a detailed exploration program undertaken by Australian Manganese Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of FerrAus Ltd) has defined a global indicated and inferred resource totaling 164.4 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe (ASX: FRS 17 April 2009).

The objectives of this study were to: (a) determine the state of the art for the control effectiveness of various chemical dust suppressants, (b) field test the effectiveness of the dust suppressants, and (c) develop technical guidelines for selecting and implementing cost effective tailings pond dust control programs. Chemical stabilizers evaluated under field conditions were: Coherax, Calcium Lignosulfonate, Nalco 656, 655, and Magnesium Chloride. Testing in the field utilized a portable field in-situ wind tunnel. The wind tunnel was placed on the tailings surface and simulated wind speeds of up to 80 mph were used to determine wind erosion threshold velocities. Emission rate testing was performed with the wind tunnel through the use of a real-time cascade impactor. A control cost effectiveness evaluation was performed to determine how efficient the chemical stabilizers were on a dollars expended per acre basis.

"Efficient utilization of CO2 can help to decrease global warming. Methane reforming using carbon dioxide has been of interest for many years, but recently that interest has experienced a rapid increase for both environmental and commercial reasons. The use of CO2 provides a source of clean oxygen, which eliminates the need for costly oxygen separation plants. The product of dry reforming is useful syn-gas, which can be used to generate electrical power in a SOFC or in the production of synthetic fuels (hydrocarbons and alcohols). Hexaaluminate catalysts prepared at NETL may represent a product that can be utilized for the conversion of CO2 to syn-gas. In this work, transition metals dispersed in barium hexaaluminate have shown to be promising new catalysts for dry methane reforming. In this investigation, a series of BaNixAl12-yO19-d catalysts with varying Ni content were prepared by co-precipitation followed by calcination at 1400°C. CO2 reduction by dry methane reforming was carried out to determine catalyst performance as a function of temperature and carbon formation was also quantified after the reforming tests. Results of catalysts characterization, dispersion and surface area, were correlated to catalytic performance.IntroductionEfficient utilization of CO2 can help to decrease global warming. The dry reforming reaction has been known for a long time. Recent publications have reported studies over several catalysts. For example, the CO2 reforming of CH4 over mesoporous nanocrystalline zirconium powders (ZrO2–3%M2Ox; M: Ce, La and K) at 700ºC have shown methane conversion up to 60% (1). Similarly, the effect of Ni content (1–12 wt%) on the surface and catalytic behavior of bimetallic PtNi catalysts supported on ZSM-5 for reforming of methane with CO2 has been studied and report shows a maximum conversion of 16% and catalyst deactivation was observed during the first hour of time on stream (2). In another report, (3) Ni/a-Al2O3 catalyst was tested for syn-gas generation at 750ºC. The maximum methane conversion was 25%."

The surface zone of nickel laterite ore is generally considered as residue. However, because of the depletion of ore sources and the increase in demand, this previously discarded zone may now be processed economically for nickel and cobalt. After leaching and removal of the impurities, the solution contains cobalt, magnesium, manganese and nickel. Solvent extraction is a hydrometallurgical technique used in the separation of metals from aqueous solutions. Cyanex 272 and D2EHPA are extractants used to separate nickel from cobalt. The mixture of extractants can change the performance during the metals extraction. This work aims to evaluate the solvent extraction of nickel and cobalt when Cyanex 272 and D2EHPA are mixed. The results showed that the increased concentration of D2EHPA in the organic phase increased the extraction of nickel and magnesium. However, cobalt extraction was reduced and the manganese extraction was not altered.

THE Southeast Missouri division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. normally hauls and hoists over 5 million tons of lead ore each year. This ore is mined in the stopes and headings of 20 mines, hauled to a main line system, see above, and transported up to 6.4 miles to ore-hoisting shafts. Average haulage distance is 2.16 miles. A few years ago a distinguished mining engineer visiting this area for the first time remarked, "You do not have a mining problem; yours is a haulage problem." Its relative importance may be gaged by the fact that mine haulage represents about 25 pct of the total cost of mining ore, the most costly single underground operation

Self-diffusion in zinc has been used as an instrument for comparison of the absorption and sectioning techniques as a means of studying diffusion. Single crystal as well as poly-crystal samples were used asanda the temperature range of diffusion extended from 200° to 415°C. For temperatures above 200°C, the data indicate that the results obtained from the absorption technique agree with those obtained from the sectioning technique. The effect on the values of the diffusion coefficient of electroplating vs evaporation as a means of applying the tracer was investigated and no significant difference observed. It was found that an excess or deficiency of tracer did not materially affect the results obtained from the sectioning technique, but invariably caused errors with the absorption technique. NEARLY all self-diffusion experiments and many alloy diffusion experiments have employed radioisotopes as the instrument for following the diffusion. Of the various techniques in which radioisotopes are applicable, the two most widely used are the sectioning and absorption techniques. In the former, the diffusion coefficient is obtained from a curve of log concentration vs the square of the mean penetration depth. In the latter, the diffusion coefficient is calculated from a knowledge of the decrease in activity at the surface after diffusion. In spite of the importance of knowing the reliability of the diffusion data and the widespread use of these two techniques, they had not been directly compared experimentally on the same samples. Thus, such a comparison was worthwhile. The specific system chosen for this comparison was the self-diffusion of zinc, since the metal was readily obtainable in high purity, single crystals were easily grown, and the anisotropic features of the diffusion added an additional factor of interest to the comparison. Self-diffusion in both single and polycrystals was investigated, since the possibility existed that grain boundaries and grain boundary diffusion might produce different effects for the different techniques. Also, the effects of electroplating vs evaporation as a means of applying the radioactive tracer, and the effects of applying an excess or deficiency of tracer material were studied. The general experimental procedures and the mathematical analyses of both techniques have been described previously in some detail, and only those points essential to an understanding of the present work will be discussed here. The mathematical analysis of the sectioning data requires only a knowledge of the solution of Fick's equation. where C,, is the initial concentration, C is the concentration at depth x, D is the diffusion coefficient, and p is the absorption coefficient of the solvent metal for the radiation from the solute. Having obtained F from the experiment, the value of z can be read from a plot of F vs In z, and D can then be calculated if is known. The necessity of knowing the absorption coefficient causes most of the criticism of the absorption technique. It is very difficult to measure accurately under the conditions existing in the diffusion experiment, but it is absolutely necessary, as will be indicated briefly later. Portions of this problem have been discussed in detail elsewhere." The difficulties involved in the measurement of the absorption coefficient arise from three principle factors: the physical characteristics of the absorber, the geometry, and complex radiation spectra. "INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

"This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of melt flow near the solid-liquid interface and its effect on the interface curvature in a horizontal unidirectional solidification system with succinonitrile. Melt flow is introduced by increasing the ampoule channel thickness. Visualization techniques are employed to observe the flow field and the solid-liquid interface curvature. A numerical model is also developed to simulate the heat transfer, melt flow and phase change in the system. Quantitative information on the flow and temperature fields is generated. A good agreement is achieved between the experimental observations and model predictions. The results could be used for the study of the effect of the melt flow on interface morphology during solidification.IntroductionClassic unidirectional solidification experiments of transparent alloys are conducted with thin film samples sandwiched between two glass slides to investigate the development of interface morphology during solidification [1]. Samples with small channel thickness are usually used to suppress any melt flow due to natural convection and solidification in the channel would then be in the diffusive regime so that the solidification theory can be significantly simplified [2, 3]. Effects of melt flow, in particular due to natural convection, on solidification have also been studied extensively in those systems with large geometrical dimensions [4-6]. These studies indicate a strong effect of the melt flow on interface curvature during solidification [5, 6]. Only limited efforts were made to address the effect of the melt flow on interface morphology in horizontal unidirectional solidification, in particular for the cases when the channel thickness is not thin enough to suppress completely the natural convection [7]."

Large seismic events have been reported in mines in the Sudbury mining camp for more than 70 years. Nevertheless, no detailed record of the events has been compiled. In 2008, the Sudbury Regional Seismic Network (SRSN) research project was initiated to collect more accurate data with regard to the magnitude and locations of mining-induced seismic events in and near the mines in the Sudbury Basin. The data is used to better understand the mechanisms of the events and cause-effect relations between mining and seismic events. Through the collection of a central database of large seismic events, new insight is being be gained into why some mines are much more prone to large events than others. Fifteen low cost seismic stations have been distributed throughout the Sudbury basin. The data from each seismic station is uploaded to a central server using the internet. Data recorded on the SRSN is processed on a daily basis, and a weekly summary of blasts and events is issued to project sponsors. Seismic events smaller than local magnitude +1.0 have been identified and located. Event location accuracy is less than 2 kilometres, however, many events have been located less than 1 km from a mine. The SRSN fills a seismic monitoring gap between the in-mine microseismic monitoring systems and the earthquake monitoring system operated by the Geological Survey of Canada. Since July 2008, more than 600 mine blasts and more than 450 mining-induced seismic events have been recorded in the Sudbury basin. This paper primarily discusses the technical aspects of the design and operation of the SRSN. The SRSN is a Canadian Mining Industry Research Organisation (CAMIRO) research project, with industry sponsorship and support from FNX Mining, Itasca Canada, Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel.
