"Compañía Minera Dona Inés de Collahuasi, CMDIC, has developed a methodology that allows estimating economic benefit taking into account the variability of the ore characteristics (geometallurgical models). Currently, the grinding model allows predicting the treatment capacity, specific power and balls consumption for short, mid and long term planning. An alternative impact test to estimate SAG grinding parameters is presented in order to bring the geometallurgical model from mid and long term to short term planning. The impact test uses either the production bench or geological drill holes. This allows Geologists increasing the density of grinding parameters within the block model improving the geostatistical estimation of the rest of the blocks. The test requires a small amount of sample to obtain the requires grinding parameters for the grinding model in comparison to the well known grinding test and also, it can be performed easily and quickly by the geology team of a mining company. The alternative grinding test is presented in this article. The grinding model using this short grinding test has been successfully used in mining planning and the accuracy of the model is demonstrated using monthly average instantaneous throughput from January 2013 to March 2014, showing an average relative error of 5% and an R2 value of 0.9. Also, 111 individual variability samples were divided into two each, in order to compare the estimated grinding parameters based on this alternative test to the grinding parameters obtained from the conventional grinding test. The comparison shows an average relative error of 4% and an R2 value of 0.9."

The large walking dragline has been the most commonly used overburden-stripping equipment in Texas lignite mines. These draglines, operating on the highwall side of the pit, can excavate to a depth of 45 m. Considerable overburden rehandling is required beyond 30 m and may reach 100 percent by 45m. As pit depth increases, dragline operation also becomes more complex, with two or three passes being necessary to make a cut 30 to 40 m wide. Multiseam operations also require extra passes. At pit depths greater than 45 m, the dragline must be operated also from a spoil bench. This can be difficult in the unstable alluvial deposits in which lignite occurs.

Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year, 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million of crude and 7 ¼ million tons of concentrate and pellets, which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody, or new orebodies, a particular drill will be most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock property. For the rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes, and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index.

Sampling and metallurgical test work during various phases of engineering?studies?is of?paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flow sheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical test work supports the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development.The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical test work are just as important as the metallurgical test work itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should take into account the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical test work program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design.Snowden has observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical test work carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. Some designs are often the result of the plant design based on benchmarks of apparently similar orebodies or buoyant metal prices supporting cash flows until rectifications can be implemented.The paper will discuss important aspects of sampling and test work required for engineering studies in designing process plants based on industrial case studies.CITATION:Guresin, N, Lorenzen, L, Dominy, S C, Muller, H and Cooper, A, 2012. The Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. The two tunnels parallel each other and are 59 ft. apart, center to center (Fig. 1) They are for vehicular traffic, and in each there is ample space for two lines of vehicles. A series of analyses of possible mining excavations associated with the development of copper nickel deposits of the MINNAMAX site in Northeastern Minnesota is presented. Specific areas such as roof and pillar stability and excavution orientations are addressed. The majority of these analyses were conducted using a boundary element method but some cases were also analyzed using the finite element method. Comparable results were obtained using the two methods but the boundary element method required less data preparation time and computer run time. Results of the analyses, as well as indicating the capabilities of geotechnical numerical models, provide some insights into behavior around multiple excavations in jointed rock.

On January 1, 1959, the United States had 313 petroleum refineries with a total installed crude-oil throughput capacity of 9,819,846 barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decreased of five in the number of slants mild a net increase in capacity of 412,139 barrels per day. The continued increase in total capacity and decrease in number of plants raised the average capacity of a refinery to a new high of 31,373 barrels per day. During 1958 total capacity increased in every refining district except the Louisiana Gulf district, which showed a 2-percent decrease due mainly to the retirement of the American Oil Company's plant at Destrehan, La. The largest increase, 14 percent, occurred in the Texas Inland district followed by a 12-percent increase in the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland district. At the beginning of 1959 the industry was building facilities that would add 108,400 barrels per day to crude-oil capacity. It also had under construction a capacity of 226,100 barrels per day as replacement. On January 1, 1959, no new refineries were under construction.

Drilling and blasting is a popular excavation technique in the drift of underground mine. Faster completion of drift reduces the gestation period and thus longer blast pulls are attempted with longer drill holes. This compels the blasters to initiate higher charge quantity with higher confinements and ultimately results into blast-induced cracks beyond the desired periphery line of excavation. Assessment of the extent of these crack networks is difficult and often neglected. Near-field ground vibration models are often used as damage predictors (Dey, 2007, Yang et.al 1993, Holmberg et. Al 1979) but not necessarily deals with the positions of the cracks. Qualitative measurement of actual damage extent often measured using some geophysical tools, namely, P-wave velocity (Tezuka, 1995), seismic imaging (Dey, 2011), bore hole pressure monitoring (Brent and Smith, 1996), electrical resistivity (Grady and Kipp, 1993), GPR (Adams et.al, 1993) etc. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a similar geo-physical tool, which uses Electro-magnetic (EM) pulse for characterizing the medium. Similar to other geo-physical tools, GPR also comprises of a transmitter and one/multiple receivers to generate the EM pulse and receive the same after reflection/refraction from the medium(s) respectively. After its development in 1970s, GPR gained increased popularity due to its application in many important fields, namely, identification of buried objects, geological characterization, identification of geological disturbances etc. Thus, it is felt that GPR technique can be used to detect the invisible cracks inside the rockmass from the rock surface (wall and roof) itself. Understanding the same, field experimentations are carried out in an underground manganese mine in Central India, which operates on the ‘cut and fill’ method of mining at a depth of around 300m from the surface. Wedge cut blasting is carried out in the horizontal drifts of the mine using suitable blast design. A 1.6 GHz antenna was used for the GPR scanning, in which GPR transmitter transmits signals predominantly of the said frequencies. The signals get reflected back from any type of interfaces between materials in the target area, with different dielectric properties and is received by the receiver part of the ‘trans-receiver’ antenna and memorized in the Data Acquisition Unit (DAU). The data acquired is processed using a software. Ground vibration monitoring of the blasts are also carried out to develop a vibration predictor. The numerical analysis of near-field vibration predictor model results into the estimated vibration levels at the point of identified cracks. Introduction

The accurate evaluation of reservoir-performance characteristics in the secondary recovery of petroleum by water flooding requires use of a water tracer that may be injected into water-input wells and detected at oil-production wells to supplement data obtained from core analyses, wellhead tests, and subsurface measurements. Radioactive iodine has been used successfully as a water tracer in field tests to determine: (I) relative rates and patterns of flow of injected water between water-input and oil-production wells and (2) zones of excessive water entry into oil-production wells. Laboratory evaluations of potential water tracers, previous tracer studies, the value of using a radioactive tracer, general field procedures, and the use of surface and subsurface instruments for the detection of the emitted gamma radiation, are summarized. Data from the field tests are presented graphically and discussed in detail. It is concluded that the radioactive-tracer method, using radioactive iodine, may be used successfully to measure either the relative rates and patterns of flow or zones of excessive water entry into wells under conditions of comparatively rapid transit time between wells. INTRODUCTION Extensive use is made of data obtained from core analyses, wellhead tests, fluid characteristics, and subsurface measurements in evaluating the sweep efficiency of water injected into oil sands for the recovery of oil. Theoretical flow rates and patterns may be calculated from those data using radial-flow formulas, if it is assumed that the physical conditions in the productive formation are homogeneous. Unfortunately, homogeneous conditions rarely, if ever, exist in oil-productive formations. The use of a tracer that may be injected into an oil sand and detected quantitatively, or even qualitatively, at offsetting oil-production wells provides basic data that may be used in determining more accurately the subsurface rates and patterns of flow of injected water between wells than is possible by theoretical calculations based on assumed conditions. Consideration of the data obtained by using a water tracer assists in the application of remedial measures to water-input wells, such as plugging of channels, or selective plugging of highly permeable zones, thereby effecting a more uniform flood and a greater ultimate oil recovery. A water tracer should have the following characteristics: (1) low adsorption on solid reservoir material; (2) high solubility in water; (3) low or negligible solubility in crude petroleum; (4) a wide range of solubility of compounds that may be formed by chemical reactions with ions present in reservoir rocks or waters; (5) high detectability in low concentrations by portable apparatus; and (6) general availability at low cost. Additional desirable characteristics are that the tracer should be nonhazardous in nature under normal working conditions and quantitatively detectable in the well bore, as well as at the surface. Review of Previous Tracer Studies The need for a water tracer has been recognized for many years. As far back as 1906, Dole1 described the use of fluorescein in flow-rate studies made in France in 1901. The dissolution behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions with cupric ammine as an oxidant has been investigated using a rotating disc electrode. The rates of dissolution of silver were determined by an electrochemical means as well as a direct measurement of silver ions reported in the bulk solution as a function of time. The variables investigated included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of lixiviants, and pH of the solutions. The rate of dissolution under the conditions studied' was found to be controlled by an electrochemical reaction at the liquid/ solid interface with an apparent activation energy of 48.07 kJ /mole. The rate was found to be a half order with respect to the, concentration of cupric tetra-ammine, Cu(NH3)l+.; The results were explained in terms of a mixed' potential theory.

Aluminum alloys offer a wide range of capability with a unique combination of advantages that makes them the materials of choice for numerous products and markets. One of the most important applications is their use as the primary structure and outer envelope in aerospace vehicles. Wide and thorough studies on hot working and microstructure evolution of aluminum alloys have been made in Russia. The most important appear to be: - introducing the structure diagrams in strain rate - temperature coordinates which show areas of different microstructures (non-recrystallized, recrystallized, and mixed) after the hot deformation and the following heat-treatment for common aluminum alloys (Yu.M. Vainblat); - studying the press-effect ("structural effect" by V.I. Dobatkin); - learning the influence of hot worked substructure on aging mechanisms; conducting researches on press heat-treatment. These works allowed a deeper understanding and a better control of the mechanical behavior of aluminum products. Comparisons are made to equivalent developments in Europe and America.

Hydrogen sulfite has been listed (1)3/ as a possible hazard in 50 occupations, many of which are in the mineral industries. The effects of its occurrence in the petroleum industry made themselves felt more than two decades ago, resulting in a comprehensive study (2) of the toxic gases from Mexican and other high-sulfur petroleum products. The mining industry, likewise, has had cause to guard against this gas. Enough hydrogen sulfide has been found in coal and some noncoal mines during normal operations to cause severe eye irritation, some serious illness, end even fatalities. It is usually a product of the decomposition of sulfur compounds and may be produced by burning explosives containing sulfur; the gas in harmful qauntities is formed by the use of block blasting powder or by the use of dynamite in blasting sulfide ores. Hydrogen sulfide is readily soluble in water, and enough may be released from water streams in coal and noncoal mining to cause fatal poisoning it is found sometimes in stagnant water underground, particularly where ventilation currents are absent, and great care must be exercised when accumulations of such waters are disturbed, as exposure to comparatively low concentrations of the gas evolved therefrom has caused fatal accidents.

An intelligent recognition and quantification system for the micrographs iron ore sinter was developed in the current paper. The average distribution parameters in a gray histogram of minerals by a Gaussian gray distribution model were obtained. The feature curves of the gray histogram of two minerals were achieved by combining the two density functions. The feature indexes, such as the number and position of the peaks and the valleys of two minerals in different ratios, were quantified by differentiating the distribution functions. This algorithm is able to extract the feature of the minerals adequately and accurately for recognizing the composition and phases of the minerals intelligently.

Objective To reduce equipment operator exposure to respirable dust in enclosed cabs by examining the effectiveness of retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs. Background Many types of heavy equipment are used in mining, construction, and agriculture. Most have enclosed cabs to protect the equipment operator from excessive dust and noise exposure. When the equipment is new, controls are normally implemented into the cab to keep these exposures at acceptable levels. However, as this equipment becomes older, many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals. This causes the effectiveness of the enclosed cab to be greatly reduced. Once this occurs, the equipment operator's dust exposure can increase to hazardous levels. In surface mining operations, elevated exposures to crystalline silica have caused an excessive incidence of silicosis. Approach A cooperative research study with a mining operation and a cab filtration company was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of retrofitting an older surface drill with two controls to lower the drill operator's respirable dust exposure. These two controls were: (1) A good air filtering and pressurization system to ensure that clean air was delivered into the enclosed cab. Ideally, the incoming air filter should be 99% efficient in removing particles with an aero- dynamic diameter of 0.3 pm or greater from the airflow. (2) Sufficiently sealing the cab to develop a positive static pres- sure and ensure that dust was not leaking into the cab. This was done by plugging all holes and cracks and maintaining good gaskets and seals. To prevent wind from forcing contaminated air through holes in the cab, the cab's static pressure must be greater than the wind's velocity pressure. During the course of this research, it was found that a floor heater fan used in the drill during the winter months greatly increased the operator’s Respirable dust exposure. Problem Identification Four days of background dust levels were measured as a baseline for this research. These baseline measurements were taken in May 2000 when air temperatures ranged from 60° to 70° F. When this was completed, the two controls were implemented. The first control was to install an improved air filtering and pressurization system on the enclosed cab. This was composed of a two-stage prefilter, a blower, then the respirator-medium secondary filter. Since the secondary filter was on the positive side of the fan, all air delivered into the enclosed cab had to pass through this secondary filter. After the filtering system was installed, the cab was pressurized to a static pressure of0.01 inches of water (w.g.), which is still very minimal. The second control was to seal the cab. New door gaskets were installed, and all cracks and holes in the shell of the enclosure were plugged. This increased the cab pressurization to approximately 0.1 inches w.g.

The Sherwood Mine is being monitored to determine the nature and extent of changes in the mine and its environs which result from the closing and the cessation of pumping. Of particular interest was the possibility of piping-induced subsidence occurring as the mine flooded. Previous experience in the district indicated that this possibility was very real. A monitoring system, including acoustic sensors, extensometers, surface subsidence monuments, and ground water observation wells was installed in July 1978, just prior to the mine closing. Late in 1979, three piping-induced subsidence events occurred. The monitored data, and related laboratory studies are being applied to a quantitative description of piping-induced subsidence.

In 2001 Platinum overtook gold in foreign revenue earnings for South Africa. The export sales from platinum group metals amounted to R29.3 billion as opposed to gold export sales of R28.6billion1. Organizations must undertake new ventures to replace old, worn-out and obsolete assets with new ones. These assets could be a building, a new product or process, a new mine, or anything that can help the organization to achieve its objective. These ventures are projects by their nature. When a project is pronounced a success, the judgement is usually based on some factual evidence, although not every one uses the same data. From the literature, it is obvious that there is a lack of consensus and objectivity as to what constitutes a successful project. The purpose of this paper is to address the following questions: ?What constitutes a successful project? ? How does one measure project success? ?How can one work toward project success? This paper addresses the requirements for project success of three of the primary stakeholders of a project, namely the business or client, the employees as far as the project team is concerned, and the local community. Indicators are developed into a work breakdown structure (WBS)-like chart to demonstrate success indicators. These indices take cognisance of all the constituents required for project success. The indicators are further developed to take cognisance of the requirements of the local communities. These indices are then weighted to arrive at a total score for the respective stakeholders. Using these WBS models, the success and performance of a project can be evaluated. This score is considered an objective measure of project success. Projects are evaluated more consistently across different projects and the project manager is provided with a management tool that can assist him/her in ensuring greater project success. The shortcoming of this approach is that the weights of the different indices have been estimated at this stage. Research will have to be conducted to more accurately reflect the weights assigned to the indices.

This case study presents the results of a maintenance review of a soot blower system at a coal fired power generation station. The power generation station was following a ?repair when it breaks? maintenance strategy for its soot blowers. The efficiency losses incurred as a result of failures in the soot blower system and the resulting interruption and out of service time was found to have a significant effect on the plant output. The maintenance strategy for the soot blowers was reviewed using Reliability Cantered Maintenance and lifecycle simulation. This methodology provided visibility to the monetary implications of failures and allowed alternative types of maintenance to be assessed and where justified were added to a maintenance schedule in the Maximo work order management system. By reducing unplanned breakdowns the predicted reduction in efficiency losses was 45%.

Three years ago the writer presented a paper on the trend of development in the wrought iron industry,' wherein was described a process in the development of which he has been a factor, which at that time had passed through several years of progressive experimental development but which had not then been put upon a commercial scale of operation. The present paper deals with two years of observation and experience in the commercial operation of a plant by the A. M. Byers Co. at Warren, Ohio. It will not enter into the controversial field of the relative merit of wrought iron and steel in various classes of service, nor will it elaborate upon the characteristic services or fields of utility to which wrought iron is particularly adapted. It is sufficient to state that the wrought iron industry is upon a substantial basis and that the material finds service in pipe, where its advantages are in superior corrosion, fatigue, welding and threading qualities; in bar iron for staybolts, engine bolts, and rivets, demanding maximum service against corrosion and fatigue; in plates for corrosion service; and in chains, because of welding and shock-resisting characteristics. In short, ability to withstand the stresses of shock and vibration, or the ravages of corrosion, to hold protective coatings, and to give maximum efficiency in welding, are its features of relative superiority. If these features were not well recognized, the wrought iron industry would have shrunk to insignificance in the face of high costs and acknowledged limitations in manufacture. To charge that this industry is built upon a structure of assumption, psychology, and improperly weighed evidence is an impeachment of the integrity or belittling of the powers of observation of users through many centuries of service experiences. In a history which extends to prehistoric time, and which is linked up with the earliest records of ferrous products, the dominant method of manufacture, as we have known it for little over a century, occupies a very small niche in the span of years that mark production and use of wrought iron. 1. Introduction.—The methods of production of sound steel ingots have been described in several papers read recently before this Institute. It was thought by Director Stratton, of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and ourselves to be of sufficient interest and importance, as a further contribution to this subject, to compare the properties of rails rolled in one mill according to American practice, from several types of ingot of substantially the same chemical composition but cast by several processes; and to compare in considerable detail the properties of an ingot manufactured by the Hadfield special-feeding process and one of the usual type for rolling into rails. We are greatly indebted to F. W. Wood, President of the Maryland Steel CO., who made this investigation possible by kindly placing his rail mill at our disposal; and he and his associates at Sparrows Point did everything possible to make the experiment a success, including the execution of several of the tests and analyses. 2. Classification and Manufacture of Ingots.—Of the ingots used in this investigation, eight were made in Sheffield and furnished by Sir Robert Hadfield, and one was made and furnished by an American steel company,l as a comparison ingot, and was supposed to represent the usual type of ingot from which rails are made. The characteristics of the ingots are given in Table I. Ingots 1, 2, 3, and 4 were cast large end up and fed by the Hadfield method in the usual manner with charcoal and blast continued until the molten steel has set on the top of the head, say varying from 20 to 40 min. To ingots 1, 2, and 4 was added 0.1 per cent. aluminum, and to the nickel-chrome ingot, No. 3, 0.125 per cent. Rock-drill steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted.
