Since the 1981 record of 54 mm tons of US fertilizer consumption, grain surpluses in the US have brought about massive acreage reduction programs, decreased fertilizer consumption, and resulting price pressures caused by excess capacity. The strong US dollar that reduced export sales of both grain and fertilizer, and new offshore manufacturing capacity using US engineering/contracting know-how have combined to put US producers of phosphate fertilizers in uncompetitive postures. While recent events suggest the industry may be growing out of this capacity problem, the cost of US phosphates will continue to be disadvantaged by such external factors as taxes, environ- mental regulations, and high power costs. There is no reason to expect help from the government in the form of reduced environmental regulation and taxation. In order to survive, phosphate fertilizer producers will have to develop technologies and adopt strategies that result in world competitive production costs. Current responses to the need to reduce costs include reduced energy costs through cogeneration, innovative reclamation techniques that create valuable land, and in- creased raw material recovery achieved by operator proficiency. While new technology offers long-term benefits for the producer, present efforts are concentrated on more mundane management efforts to reduce costs. Major attention is being given to the problems of labor utilization and productivity. Raw materials suppliers are being asked to renegotiate contracts which more appropriately reflect conditions in an industry operating at about 50% of capacity. Achievements in these and other areas will allow the producers to continue operating until longer term benefits materialize. `

"As the stirrer speed directly affects the motion of grinding media, and hence the interactions with material particles to be ground, the rotation speed of a stirred mill is well recognized as one of the most important factors affecting the grinding performance. In this work, the effect of stirrer speed on grinding performance in terms of grinding rate and grinding energy efficiency was quantitatively investigated. Batch wet grinding tests of quartz powder at different stirrer speeds were performed, using a self-made horizontal stirred mill with alumina balls as grinding media. Grinding time, operating power and the sizes of ground product were recorded to analyse the grinding performance. The test results showed that grinding processes followed the first order grinding kinetics. The grinding rate constant increased with the increasing stirrer speed. Based on the grinding kinetics, the grinding energy equation was established. The energy utilization coefficient in the energy equation can be used as an indicator of energy efficiency. The energy efficiency decreased with the increasing stirrer speed. Quantitatively, with the stirrer tip speed increasing from 4.25m/s to 9.35m/s, the grinding rate constant was improved by 441.47%, whereas the energy utilization coefficient was decreased by 39.35%. The grinding rate constant and energy utilization coefficient can be used to evaluate the grinding performance when the grinding conditions need to be adjusted. The adjustment of grinding conditons would be optimal when grinding rate get significant improved with little decrease of energy efficiency."

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

"With the trend towards bringing into production ore bodies of lower and lower copper content every possible avenue of approach to achieve maximum copper metal recovery and keep milling costs to a minimum are of increasing importance.Equipment manufacturers have contributed a great deal by designing larger mills, flotation machines, pumps, etc. in lowering capital and operating costs; instrumentation and automation usually as a joint effort of operating staffs and equipment manufacturers have resulted in lower operating costs and improved metallurgy. Likewise manufacturers of chemicals used in mineral beneficiation have directed their research and development at new flotation reagents and treatment schemes to complement the needs for more efficient products, permitting coarser grinds without detriment to recovery, higher flotation rates, higher degrees of selectivity, as well as chemicals to improve settling, clarification and filtration. The various treatment schemes in use and suggested for consideration are:1) The choice of the flotation treatment scheme is largely dictated by the desire to operate a simple circuit, originally consisting of rougher and scavenger flotation, with scavenger concentrate either returning to the head of the rougher circuit or joining the rougher concentrate for cleaning by reflotation, with and without prior regrinding. The cleaner tailing was also recycled to the head of the rougher circuit. In the case of porphyry copper ores, this was originally the standard circuit. Lime is the preferred alkalinity regulator to adjust pH, usually in the range 10-12.To avoid the undesirable effects of circulating loads and gain the advantage of simplified control of the rougher circuit, open circuit cleaning is practiced more and more. In this scheme, cleaner tailing is scavenged to produce a discardable tailing and the scavenger concentrate returned either to the cleaner or the regrind circuit."

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

Any company operating a fleet of trucks will be greatly advantaged if the associated fuel costs can be decreased. The optimal tonnage that trucks should be hauling to ensure minimum consumption of diesel fuel has been investigated. The fuel consumption in litres per ton for a fleet of trucks hauling different tonnages of iron ore was recorded in a time-motion study and the optimal tonnage was determined. The following points emerged as a result of the research: > The diesel fuel consumption in litres per ton decreased with increasing tonnage, which means that in order to improve fuel efficiency, the trucks should carry 21 t > As a result of queuing, Africa Truck Hire (one of the two equipment contractors) loses R282.57 per day to diesel that the trucks burn when they are left idling. It is thus advisable that the company adopt a policy of requiring the drivers to switch their engines off while queuing at the stockpile > Filling up the trucks during each shift or rationing the quantity of diesel to 200 litres each shift has a negligible impact on the trucks&apos; fuel efficiency > For the company to spend 35% of their revenue on fuel, the diesel price would have to be between R8.14 and R8.78 per litre.

One of the most challenging aspects in semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (SMIPCC) system design is determining the optimum depth at which to change from a purely truck-based haulage system to a conveyor-based haulage system. We used scenario analysis to determine the optimum transition depth between a truck and shovel (TS) system and a SMIPCC system. Traditional pit-limit algorithms were used to generate the final pit limit on a copper deposit, which was then divided into four pushbacks. The final operating pushbacks (phases) were designed for both TS and SMIPCC. The end depths for each phase are viewed as candidate transition points to switch from the TS to SMIPCC haulage system. Economic calculations were applied for five different scenarios, including adopting SMIPCC from the outset (pure SMIPCC), after the first, second, and third phases, and finally not using the SMIPCC system (pure TS) at all. The analysis indicates that the second scenario, at a depth of 335 m, results in the lowest cumulative discounted cost (CDC). In this case, the CDC is 17.6% lower than that for the pure TS scenario and 10.7% lower than for the pure SMIPCC system scenario.

Gold and lesser copper mineralisation are associated with porphyry-related vein systems periph-eral to two separate inferred intrusive centres north of Kainantu, Papua New Guinea (PNG). The intersection of NW trending structures, formed parallel to the Markham Fault, with NE trending transfer structures localise porphyry intrusions, and control vein distrib-ution.The Arakompa veins intrude pre-existing fractures in Akuna granodiorite, located proximal to an inferred porphyry. These veins are characterised by early quartz and later pyrite-chalcopyrite. Gold mineralis-ation is associated with Bi-Te phases in the sulphide veining. At Maniape, en echelon gash veins occur within the imbricate portion of a regional structure. "Model tests have been performed to investigate the vertical, horizontal and cone tip resistances of bucket pile embedded in sand by different installation methods; suction force by pump and jacking force by actuator. Micro-cone penetrometer is used to evaluate the variation of the effective stress inside and outside of the pile after installation. As a result of vertical pull-out test, the jacked pile shows 3 times larger resistance than the suction-installed pile. For horizontal pull-out test, the ultimate horizontal capacity and the slope of load-displacement curve on the suction-installed pile decreases by 22% and 40%, respectively, compared to the jacked pile. In cone penetration test, inside cone tip resistance of the suction-installed pile is about 40% smaller than the jacked pile, which indicates that the effective stress is reduced due to upward seepage of bucket pile in sand by suction force. Therefore, installation methods can affect the behavior of the bucket pile significantly.INTRODUCTIONA suction force occurred when bucket pile penetrates into sandy soils induces seepage flow into the bucket pile so downward seepage near the outside of bucket pile causes to increases the effective stress, while upward seepage inside the bucket pile decreases the effective stress (Mahn, 2005; Fig. 1). The effect of induced seepage causes to reduce the penetration resistance during installation. On the other hand, reduced effective stress can decrease the horizontal and vertical capacities of bucket pile by significant disturbance at the tip of the bucket pile due to the flow net. Due to the complexity and difficulty considering the effects of suction installation, many previous researchers generally have neglected the effect of suction installation in their experiments. "In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration. INTRODUCTIONA detailed experimental study on the characteristics of longwall dust cloud in operating longwall faces has been reported by Ramani, Qin, and Jankowski (1991). The study indicated that there are several important factors whose effects on dust transport in longwall faces need to be further investigated. In an operating longwall face, the effect of these parameters could not be easily isolated as control over the affecting parameters is not readily possible. In a simulated longwall face, however, these parameters can be controlled. Therefore, as a follow-up to the field study, a series of controlled experiments were conducted in a full scale simulated longwall face in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Qin, 1992]. Specific aspects which were addressed during the experimental design phase included determining the types of samples to be collected, selecting proper instruments to collect these samples, and developing detailed sampling and time-study plans to correlate the dust concentrations with face activities. Two types of dust--anthracite and bituminous--were used. Dust dispersion rate into the air as well as the source dust particle size distribution were documented. Control was exercised over both air velocity at the face and air leakage along the longwall face. During experiments, the dust source was moved to simulate the shearer movement at operating longwall faces. Detailed descriptions of the design of experiments, experimental results, and data analyses follow in the subsequent sections."

THE presentation to the Institute, eight years ago, of the paper of Pošepny on " The Genesis of Ore-Deposits " has borne fruit in much fresh: investigation, as is evidenced, for example, by the group of very valuable papers, by distinguished members" of the United States Geological Survey, read at the Washington meeting-discussions of general principles particularly suggestive to those who are engaged in mining. Pošepny, in the discussion of his famous treatise, said that the present writer seemed to look at every new conception in ore-deposition" from the sole standpoint of its immediate usefulness in mining."* Protesting mildly against " sole " and "immediate," I accept the impeachment. It calls for no defence. THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECENT THEORIES. Given the idea of an underground water-circulation as the chief factor in the deposition of ore, the next step in the inquiry as to the genesis of such deposits is, the endeavor to determine which particular part of the general water-circulation is responsible for the results. Around this question have centered the controversies of a generation, and to these controversies we owe the gradual clarification of our ideas upon the processes of ore-formation. It is unnecessary to sketch here their progress from Werner to Le Conte, who combated in 1883 the extreme views of the lateral-seeretionists, and in 1893 opposed the narrow interpretation of the ascensionist-theory. The generally accepted opinions of to-day are a well-deserved tribute to his philosophic discrimination. Wireless technologies are increasingly being implemented in underground mines for various purposes such as communications, tracking, remote control, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, the adoption comes with risks as common wireless systems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless system, often operate in the unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The shared nature of the ISM band can lead to interference among devices and consequently cause performance degradation and reliability issues. In this study, we developed two wireless communication evaluation boards as a tool to evaluate the performance and reliability of a wireless system with the presence of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) from other wireless systems in underground environments. We adjusted various parameters including signal power from adjacent frequency channels, noise power within the same channel, the movement of personnel, and communication packet size. Our findings indicate that, while the power of the EMI source plays a key role, the motion of personnel in the tunnel also has a strong impact on performance, and this impact increases as the power of EMI sources increases. In noisy environments, smaller packet sizes are preferable as they enhance the likelihood of successful transmission. High levels of interference or noise can lead to increased packet loss or error rates, potentially causing communication links to fail completely or become ineffective. The evaluation boards utilized in this study are based on a practical wireless transmission system deployed in a remote controller for a heavy mining machinery used in underground coal mines. The results and findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of wireless systems that are resilient to EMI in underground mining environments.

"This paper summarizes available information on the characteristics and properties of deep-mixed soilcement produced by the wet method. The topics covered in this paper include: unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, strength variability for field mixed materials, influence of curing time, influence of consolidation pressure, Young’s modulus, differences in strength and stiffness between small and large samples, creep deformations, Poisson’s ratio, and tensile strength. In addition, this paper discusses the development of design considerations and recommended property values for a project that uses soilcement to protect an existing dam penstock from loads applied by an overlying stability berm. Some of the key recommendations for the deep-mixed soil-cement to be used in this project are that (1) a curved strength envelope that includes tensile strength can be used in the analysis, (2) the stress-strain and strength properties can be characterized using Duncan and Chang's (1970) hyperbolic model, and (3) a specification based on the median unconfined compressive strength value is appropriate.INTRODUCTIONFor many projects, including foundation and embankment support, deep mixing can be designed based on simplified procedures and following standardized guidelines (e.g., FHWA 2013). However for unusually complex or critical projects, it is often necessary to perform numerical analyses, and in order to perform these numerical analyses well, a thorough understanding of the material properties is needed.This paper summarizes information on the characteristics and properties of deep-mixed soil-cement produced by the wet method, and it discusses the development of design considerations and recommended property values for a specific project, herein referred to as the penstock project, that requires numerical analyses. For the penstock project, a horseshoe-shaped enclosure of soil-cement is being considered beside and above an existing dam penstock to protect it from loads applied by an overlying stability berm that will be constructed for seismic remediation. The concept is to use soilcement created by the deep mixing method along the sides of the penstock and to use compacted soilcement above the deep mixing to create the crown of the protective soil-cement zone around the penstock. For this application, the soil-cement stiffness, rather than its strength, is the controlling design parameter. To achieve the necessary soil-cement stiffness, the strength will be high enough that the factor-of-safety values against instability along potential failure surfaces passing through the soil-cement are high. Following conventional practice, the soil-cement acceptance criteria will be based on the unconfined compressive strength, and the specified strength will be selected to produce the desired modulus value."

Detailed examination of the Sloan Ranch diamond prospect has shown that the Sloan 1 diatreme, the Sloan 2 dike, and the Sloan 3 horizontal sheet complex are all parts of the same kimberlite complex. Geologic mapping, geophysics, soil chemistry, test pitting, and drilling all helped to delineate the structure. Bulk sample testing yielded moderate grades with encouraging gem-to-industrial ratios, but no large stones were recovered. These test results, along with supporting mineral chemistry data, suggest that the Sloan Ranch complex is analogous to sub- economic occurrences located near the margins of the Archean cratons in southern Africa.

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

FOR the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill, Nova Scotia-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S.. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method wasp employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice&apos;s report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice&apos;s report will be avoided.
