THE technique developed by Duwez, Willens and Kle-ment' for rapid solidification of molten alloys in small quantities by ejecting them on to a highly conducting substrate with the aid of a shock wave has come to be known as "liquid quenching" or "splat cooling" in literature and has already been applied to alloys of many binary systems.' The very high cooling rates of the order of l060 to 1080 per sec obtained in this technique and the consequent drastic undercooling of the melt have led to such striking results as formation of new amorphous and crystalline metastable phases and extension of solid-solubility limits in many alloy systems. The cooling rates in these experiments can, however, be neither accurately measured nor effectively controlled and hence the occurrence of either more than one metastable phase or appreciable differences in constitution in splat-cooled alloys of the same composition cannot be ruled out.3 In fact, workers in two laboratories have reported formation of two different cubic metastable phases in liquid-quenched Au-Si alloys containing 17 to 20 at. pct si.4,5 The present note deals with some new and interesting results obtained in a Ag-21 at. pct Ge alloy and a Au-27 at. pct Ge alloy subjected to the liquid-quenching treatment at different cooling rates. Two alloys of nearly the same composition had earlier been rapidly solidified by the standard "gun technique" in the same laboratory and shown to solidify in nonequilibrium structures, viz., an hcp phase (a = 2.987Å;c =4.718Å) in the Ag-Ge system6,7 and both hcp (a = 2.885Å; c = 4.754Å) and tetragonal (a = 11.627A; c = 22.491Å) phases in the Au-Ge system.3 Apart from different substrates (copper and stainless steel), different melt temperatures (50º to 500°C above the liquidus), and different capillary sizes (0.4 to 1.5 mm diam) in the "gun technique", slower cooling rates of the order of l050C per sec were also obtained in the present work by replacing the substrate by water at room temperature in a modification of the technique due to Olsen and Hultgren.8 No attempt was made to measure the cooling rate in any experiment. The products varied from fine powder (>40 pct by wt—200 mesh) obtained by quenching in water to thin flakes and foils (11.0 sq mm to 4.0 sq cm) produced by splat cooling. They were subjected to the Debye-Scherrer method of X-ray examination in each case. In case of the Ag-Ge alloy, in addition to the expected metastable hcp phase,6 a coexistent tetragonal phase (a = 5.093,Å; c = 7.009Å) was detected in some experiments. Eight weak X-ray reflections from this phase could be identified, two of them being the same as reported earlier.7 With increase in the cooling rate, the dominant hcp phase seems to be first accompanied by traces of silver or germanium and then either homogeneous or mixed with traces of this new tetragonal phase. The splat-cooled Au-Ge alloy showed generally the expected hcp and tetragonal phases,3 but sometimes traces of germanium were also present. This paper reports measurement results for radio frequency (RF) propagation around 90° corners in tunnels and underground mines, for vertically, horizontally and longitudinally polarized signals. Measurements of signal power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut were performed at four frequencies — 455, 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz — that are common to underground radio communication systems. From the measurement data, signal power loss was determined as a function of signal coupling from the main entry into the crosscut. The resultant power loss data show there are many factors that contribute to power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut, including frequency, antenna polarization and crosssectional entry dimensions.

Performance-based approach to design of structures including foundations was adopted after enforcement of the revised Building Standard Law in Japan in 2000. The use of piled-raft foundation is favorable for medium-rise buildings in soft ground because of its good performance. In the design of the piled-raft foundation (Architectural Institute of JAPAN2002), vertical load is usually carried by the raft foundation, while the pile is primarily meant to control settlement of the structure. Shaft friction is expected to be larger in a nodular pile(Karkee, et.al., 1998) since it has larger surface area than a straight pile, and such piles are frequently used in piled-raft foundations. Since few structures with piled-raft foundation exist currently, the settlement characteristics of piled-raft foundation have not been fully clarified. To design piled-raft foundations with better confidence, the mechanism of vertical bearing capacity and the spatial distribution of settlement should be clarified, for which the actual behavior of the building-foundation system needs to be evaluated. This paper presents observations of settlement of a building with a piled-raft foundation at a soft ground site. The building is a steel structure covering an area an 766 m2, and consists of two-storey office block and one-storey warehouse block. The filled ground of about 5-m thickness at the ground surface is underlain by approximately 4-m thick alluvial sand layer below which lies about a 17-m thick alluvial clay layer with SPT N-value less than 2. The piles used in the piled-raft foundation are 12-m long nodular piles with nodal diameter of 500 mm (pile shaft diameter is 400 mm). The bored pre-cast piling method (Karkee, et.al., 1998) was used to install the piles. To evaluate the foundation settlement, the method of analysis of three-dimensional frame system, utilized widely in Japan, was adopted in combination with the foundation system. Basic assumptions were: (i) total ground settlement is evaluated as the sum of immediate settlement and consolidation settlement, (ii) immediate settlement is evaluated from the Mindlin?s solution in which strain dependency of shear modulus of soil is considered, (iii) settlement in clayey layers is evaluated by the one-dimensional consolidation theory, and (iv) shear spring between soil and pile shaft is represented by a hyperbolic function. The applicability of the method of analysis was verified by comparison with results of field monitoring of building settlement.

With a mine output as high as 5000 tpd and mill capacity of 7000 tpd, the uranium mining and milling complex owned and operated by Kerr-McGee Nuclear Corp. in the Ambrosia Lake area is the largest in the U.S. and is likely to remain so for some time. Next year, Kerr- McGee expects to have in production another mine in Section 19 of the Ambrosia area-and will begin ore production in 1976 at its new $15-million mine at Church Rock, located northeast of Gallup, N. M., where the company has already completed the shaft work and is in the early stages of project development. Ore from Church Rock will be transported to the company's facilities at Ambrosia Lake for processing. Kerr-McGee's existing eight mines in Ambrosia Lake go to depths of about 800 to 1500 ft to tap the various horizons of uranium-bearing sands in the Westwater Canyon of the Morrison formation.

INTRODUCTIONThe faults described in the following paper are of a somewhat unusual character, and have presented a serious problem both in the development and mining of many ore-bodies on the Eastern side of the Boulder Belt. They are mentioned only briefly in the literature of the field, but were observed by, both Stillwell (1)t and Gustafson (2), and have been studied by other geologists and operators in various parts of the "Belt." Their effect on the lodes of Hamilton Section, Great Boulder Mine, was described by King (3) in 1937, and, during recent years, they have been encountered in most of the Great Boulder workings extending east of the Boulder Dyke.Although this paper is based mainly on a study of faulting and development problems on the Great Boulder mine, the general conclusions reached may be applicable to the solution of similar faulting problems in other mines throughout the field.In order to arrive at a clear understanding of the somewhat complicated relationships which the east-dipping faults bear to the lode systems it will be necessary to give a brief outline of the salient geological and structural features of the "Belt" before proceeding to describe the faults themselves.2. GENERAL GEOLOGYThe most recent descriptions of the geology of Kalgoorlie are those by Stillwell (1) and Gustafson (2) and the reader is referred to these as representing the basis of current knowledge of the geology of the field.The Boulder Belt is comprised of a central core of altered quartz dolerite which is flanked on either side by fine grained greenstones and lavas, usually referred to as the calc schists. Down the centre of the quartz dolerite mass there is an infolded bed of slate (2, p. 105) which has been intruded in lit par lit fashion by albite porphyry; the composite body of slate and porphyry so formed is known as the "Boulder Dyke." Numerous smaller porphyry dykes intrude both the quartz dolerite and the calc schist; these vary in composition and range from chloritised hornblende porphyrites to albite porphyries.The whole of the rock assemblage has been subjected tG a considerable amount of folding, faulting, shearing and fracturing, the greater part of which took place before the formation of the lodes.

A wide range of materials are used in hydraulic backfilling operations and the pipeline flow behaviour of these mixtures varies considerably. It is shown that despite the large differences in constituent materials and flow behaviour, a common approach can be applied to analysing the flow of all hydraulic backfills. This is extended to include a rational design approach for backfill distribution systems. The use and limitations of pipe loop tests as a design aid is discussed. Backfill quality control is identified as a key area where improvement needs to be made to enhance the reliability of backfill system operation.

This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.

ONE of the most common basic open-hearth furnace products is a simple carbon steel with a carbon range from 0.05 to 0.15 per cent. The material is widely used for sheets, tubes, bars, wire and the innumerable special objects of secondary fabrication. The properties of the material vary over wide ranges, depending on the more exact composition and details of manufacture or treatment that affect its structure. The present paper is a review of those properties and structures that have been found by studying this steel as used in the cap screw industry. At first glance this might be thought a narrow application of the steel, but, since the industry uses the material in the cold-worked, annealed and heat-treated conditions, the title of the paper may be excused for its comprehensiveness. Yet, in studying the wide ranges of properties and structures that preclude a more specific title, there can be no suggestion of completeness or finality. Even a summary of a few years' work is no more than a preliminary survey of a field that will be fertile in scientific data and industrial products for many years to come. An outline of the structures will be given first, then a list of the previous contributions that are at hand and finally some details of the work and related problems, especially concerning this low-carbon steel in the surface-hardened condition.

"BACKGROUND In the event of an explosion or fire in an underground mine, workers can be exposed to a deficiency of oxygen, an excess of carbon monoxide, or both. These threats can occur as separate conditions or simultaneously. A lack of oxygen in the breathing air can only be addressed via the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) acting as a source of oxygen. An excess of carbon monoxide can also be addressed via the use of an SCBA, but if the threat occurs in isolation (that is, the atmosphere still contains sufficient oxygen to support life) and the concentration of the threat gas is not extreme (< 2%) then the carbon monoxide threat can also be addressed by the use of a filter self-rescuer (FSR). Used together, the SCBA and FSR offer a far more efficient and universally capable life support system than when used in isolation. However, the SCBA does not take advantage of the fact that the surrounding atmosphere likely contains some level of useable oxygen; i.e., the SCBA always supplies the total required oxygen from its limited supply, resulting in a ceiling on its useful life regardless of the level of oxygen in the surrounding air. To address this technology gap, what is needed is a ""smart"" SCBA that provides filtration and catalytic protection against threat gasses and has an extended duration life-sustaining oxygen inhale stream independent of the threat content and oxygen deficiency of the surrounding atmosphere. DEVELOPMENT Developed under contract with NIOSH the Smart Escape SCBA is comprised of three major components including; 1) oxygen supply, 2) oxygen sensing & dosing electronics and, 3) a CO catalyst and carbon bed broad spectrum FSR. The SCBA is designed as a hybrid system that provides non-toxic breathing air by using an approved Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear filter self-rescuer and a catalyst to convert high levels of carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide (CBRN FSR/CO). In addition, the Oxygen Sensing & Dosing Electronics (OSDE) package adds sufficient oxygen to make up for deficiencies detected in the ambient air (Figure 1). By making use of the ambient oxygen, less oxygen is required for a one-hour unit life. This means that the Smart Escape SCBA fits in a smaller and lighter package than a similar-duration conventional Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSR). Alternatively, taking advantage of available ambient oxygen could offer a significant increase in working duration in a unit with the same size as current SCSRs. The research performed under this NIOSH contract involved numerous tasks including: (1) definition of performance and system requirements for the Smart Escape SCBA, including keeping environmental stressors within acceptable ranges, providing at least one hour of breathable oxygen supply, and using a mask or hood that allows high-quality voice communication; (2) designing, building, and evaluating prototype units to support extensive bench top testing at Avon Protection and third party labs to demonstrate the device’s capabilities; (3) building sufficient quantity of Smart Escape SCBAs designed to be intrinsically safe (per MSHA criteria); (4) testing and evaluation by the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL)."

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

Morphological and electrical properties of GaAs epitaxial layers are influenced not only by changes in the nominal substrate orientation but also by small amounts of misorientation from the exact crystal planes. Deviations up to 5 deg from {11IA}, {11IB}, and (100) planes were investigated. Growth rates increase progressively with angle, approximately I u per hr per deg. Size and density of growth pyramids fall off with increasing angle, but other effects that are deleterious to the surface may occur which are heightened by increased misorientation. Carrier concentration decreases and electron mobility consequently increases as the angular offset increases, except in the case of strong compensation, where the mobility trend is reversed. It has long been known that changes in the crystallo-graphic orientation of the substrate may cause pronounced effects on the morphological properties of vapor grown semiconductor films. Reports of orienta-tion-dependent growth rates and surface characteristics are as old as the literature on epitaxy itself. shawl has recently published a comprehensive study of the dependence of growth rate on substrate temperature and orientation in epitaxial GaAs. It is also well-known that misorienting the substrate surface a few degrees away from the nominal low-index crystal-lographic plane often produces a much smoother epitaxial surface. This was reported by Tung2 for silicon, Reisman and Berkenblit3 for germanium, and by Kontrimas and Blakeslee4 for GaAs, and use is commonly made of this fact in the semiconductor industry to help guarantee smooth vapor deposits. The effects of substrate orientation on the carrier concentration and mobility of vapor grown GaAs were first documented by williams5 in 1964 and have been observed by several other authors since then,6,7 but no one has yet reported a careful study of how small changes influence these properties. We have made such a study and have found that sizable differences in growth rate, morphology, carrier concentration, and mobility can indeed be observed for epitaxial films grown on substrates that are oriented by progressive small increments away from the exact crystal plane. EXPERIMENTAL Early in the investigation an arsine synthesis system of conventional design8 was employed to produce growths on {111A}-oriented GaAs substrate crystals. In that early work, pronounced effects on carrier concentration and electron mobility were observed as a function of slight misorientation from this low index plane. That observation led to the more careful study that is reported here. An AsC13 system, differing in major aspect from those commonly in use today9 only in that the reactor is vertical rather than horizontal, was used for the detailed study. The gallium source was at 900°C and the substrates were at 750°C. The flow rate of pal-ladium-diffused H2 through the AsCl3 bubbler was 200 cu cm per min, and the flow rate of bypass H2 was also 200 cu cm per min. The substrates consisted of chro-mium-doped semiinsulating GaAs to facilitate elec-trical evaluation of the overgrowth by means of Hall and conductivity measurements on conventional eight-legged Hall bridges. They were misoriented by 0 to 5 deg from the {111A}, {111B}, and (100) planes, toward the (100) from the {111A} and {111B} and randomly toward the <111A> or <111B> from the {loo). The crystals were oriented for sawing by the Laue back-re-flection technique, which is good only to about ±1/2 deg; but after polishing or sometimes after epitaxial growth the wafers were checked by a diffractometer technique which is accurate to about * 0.1 deg. After lapping, the wafers were polished with NaOCl after the technique of Reisman and Rohr,10 and just before use they were cleaned in NaOC1, thoroughly rinsed with de-ionized water, and blown dry with nitrogen. Each run employed four wafers, each misoriented by differing amounts from one of the three major faces, and at least two runs were made for each orientation. The runs were continued long enough to provide at least a 15-µ or thicker layer. SURFACE MORPHOLOGY The appearance of all the films that were grown in a given run always changed from wafer to wafer as a function of increasing misorientation, but not always in the same regular fashion. Langer Asbestos-related disease is increased with cumulative exposure (the concentration of asbestos in the air and duration of exposure). The maximum duration is assumed to be a working lifetime so federal agencies control cumulative exposure by limiting the airborne concentration of asbestos fibers equal to or greater than 5 lm in length. Air samples are collected in the environment of interest by entraining the airborne particulates including fibers on membrane filters and then counting the number of fibers using phase-contrast light microscopy. In addition to length, the fibers must have a length to width ratio of at least 3 to 1. This ratio is also referred to as the aspect ratio. Some counting strategies placed an upper limit on the fiber width restricting the counting to respirable fibers. Airborne asbestos is controlled by monitoring a sub-population of the airborne asbestos. No asbestos fibers shorter than 5 lm or fibers of any length having widths less than the resolution of the light optical method are counted. In the non-occupational environment, the Environmental Protection Agency requires the use of analytical transmission electron microscopy and fibers and counting fibers with lengths of 0.5 lm or greater and aspect ratios of 5 to 1 or greater are counted. The permissible exposure limit for asbestos has been reduced by more than 120-fold since 1969, when the standard was 12 fiber/ml and the current monitoring methodology was developed. The manufacturing and mining worksites are regulated by two different federal agencies and the asbestos exposure limit was higher in the mining environment until recently (Mine Safety and Health Administration 30 CFR Part 56, 57, and 7, Federal Registry, February 29, 2008). Currently the permissible exposure limit (PEL) is the same in both types of workplace and it is 0.1 fibers per milliliter (fiber/ml) over an 8-h shift as a time-weighted average (TWA). A milliliter (ml) is equivalent to a cubic centimeter (cc) and sometimes this standard is reported as 0.1 f/cc. As the phase-contrast methodology was used to monitor lower exposures and environments, other fibrous mineral particulates were incorrectly characterized as asbestos. These occurred in talc deposits and taconite ores from the Eastern Mesabi Range.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a chromatographic method for analyzing impurities in helium that utilizes a helium carrier gas contain-ing 25 to 30 ppm Ne. An example of the effect of trace amounts of nitrogen, methane, and moisture on the detector&apos;s response is shown. The added neon in the carrier does away with irregularities of the analysis which were experienced when the carrier contained up to 3 ppm Ne. The addition of 25 to 30 ppm Ne causes a loss of sensitivity, but the re-maining sensitivity is adequate for routine analyses. The high-neon carrier allows positive and more linear responses for eight impurities: neon, hydrogen, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and ethane. Neon concentration levels of 0.02 to 125 ppm in helium carrier gases were studied. The high-neon carrier has been in successful rou-tine use in Bureau of Mines helium facilities since October 1981.

This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble&apos;s C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble&apos;s C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. DEMANDS upon power plants by the war program in 1941 intensified problems of coal utilization. It was an outstanding year in that field. The domestic heating stove witnessed outstanding development; the research folks progressing so rapidly that the design of the "perfect" stove is just around the corner. Use of colored motion pictures in analyzing fuel-bed performances has reached a new high with the colored pictures taken at minute intervals and projected at sixteen frames a second as shown by the Koppers Coal Co. and the Anthracite Institute (on domestic stokers) and the Consolidated Edison Co. (industrial stokers). Continued efforts of this kind will be beneficial in analyzing further some of the "Code for Testing Coal" problems confronting Subcommittee No. 2 of the Joint A. I. M. E. - A. S. M. E. Committees.

"A longwall mining method is a productive mining method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Since this method causes deformations through the overlying strata to the ground surface, the surface- and ground-water regime above the longwall panels may be adversely affected and drained into the lower strata. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of longwall mining subsidence on surface- and ground-water systems.This study is a site-specific hydrogeologic analysis conducted before, during, and after panel retreat at a site located over two selected longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam in Greene County of Pennsylvania. Mine subsidence causes fractures in the overlying strata and enlarges bedding plane separations, increasing the effective porosity and storativity of the overlying strata. Generally, the water in deeper aquifers located in the lower fractured zone drains into the mine void due to the vertical fractures. Moreover, the water level does not recover after longwall mining (but may recover when the mine is flooded). The upper aquifers over the thick aquitard layers may maintain the water level or drop slightly during longwall mining and recover very quickly. The reason is that the underlying aquiclude layer has less change in porosity and permeability after longwall mining (Carver, 1994).A groundwater flow model-MODFLOW was used to predict the water table contours for the periods of pre- and post-mining conditions. The hydraulic gradients of post-subsidence became larger outside the panels and smaller inside the panels than that of the pre-subsidence. The groundwater hydraulic heads above the longwall panel dropped a maximum 50 ft in the study panels. The shallows monitoring wells that were less than 50 ft deep from the surface were deeply affected by longwall mining subsidence. For the intermediate wells that were more than 85 ft deep from the surface, where strata movement acted as a unit during longwall mining subsidence, there were little impacts of longwall mining on the intermediate wells in the study area. For the deep wells that were located below the Waynesburg sandstone, the water was drained to the underlying strata or even into the mine gob."

"This paper is the second of a series of progress reports4 on a study of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States.There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value.One of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although several manganese minerals were readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.5 Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 9000 C. converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution.6 Introduction of smelter gases containing much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation, and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulpate.Another case involves a subsequent step in the hydrometallurgical process, namely, the formation of oxides of manganese with simultaneous evolution of SO2 by the heating of the MnSO4 produced by evaporating its solution.A third has to do with the roasting of zinc sulphide ores containing manganese as a preliminary to leaching. During purification of the solutions to be used for the electrolytic deposition of zinc the iron must be oxidized to make possible its removal. Manganese dioxide has been used for this purpose,7 and since manganese compounds are present in some zinc concentrates,8 it is of interest to learn what happens to the manganese in a zinc sulphide or on roasting, and what portion of the manganese in the roasted product might be available for oxidation."

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.
