Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

Specific energy is defined as the amount of work required to break a unit volume of rock and is used to predict the performance of mechanical miners. It is obtained from full-scale rock cutting experiments, which require large block samples, experienced personnel and expensive equipment found in only a few research centres in the world. Estimation of the optimum specific energy, at which a given geological formation is excavated at optimum cutting geometry in the most energy efficient manner, from mechanical rock properties to predict the performance/efficiency of roadheaders is the basic aim of this study. The mechanical rock property tests require only core samples, which are easier to obtain and to test. In this context, full-scale rock cutting tests are performed on 23 different rock, mineral and ore samples including sandstone, claystone, tuffite, chromite, trona and copper collected from some operating mines in Turkey. The optimum specific energy values are obtained for each sample. Physical and mechanical property tests are performed on the core samples obtained from the same samples to determine uniaxial compressive strength, indirect (Brazilian) tensile strength, static and dynamic elasticity moduli, Schmidt hammer rebound values, density, and Cerchar abrasivity index. The relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties are analysed using statistical methods. The results indicate strong relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties. The strongest relationships are found by using uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength. The performance models developed in this study are in good agreement with the empirical models previously developed for roadheaders and can be used reliably for prediction purposes. In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2is reduced to Ti2O3.One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. Steelmaking consumes the majority of chromium and manganese ferroalloys for purposes such as to impart various properties to steel. The quality of ore governs the process kinetics as well as the process economy of the ferroalloy industry. The present study demonstrates the thermal transformation behavior of chromite and manganese ores with varying compositions. Simultaneous thermal analysis (differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry, DTA/TG) was conducted on these ore samples, where the transformation of mineral phases was correlated with the thermogram characteristics and quantified. Phase, microstructure and compositional analysis results of individual ores corroborated with thermal analysis are in good agreement. Chromite samples are ferruginous with goethite and gibbsite contents, whereas manganese ores vary in composition and also exhibit multiple and/or overlapping transformations.

A Discussion of Mr. Hall's paper, read at the Washington Meeting, February, 1905. R. H. SWEETSER, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The recent work of furnace No. 1 of The Algoma Steel Co., at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, using for fuel, first all charcoal, then a mixture of charcoal and coke, and finally all coke, upsets the estimates given by Mr. Hall in the last two paragraphs of his interesting paper. Furnace No. 1 was built for a charcoal-furnace, and it was run on charcoal fuel from March 6 until July 9, 1905; then, for a week, a mix¬ture of charcoal and coke was used, and, since then, coke alone has been the only fuel. It is to be regretted that at no time, during the run on charcoal, was there enough charcoal on hand and " in sight'" to warrant blowing the furnace as hard as it should have been blown. During April and May the supply of charcoal limited the amount of blast to about 8,000 cu. ft. of air per min.; in June, to about 8,900 cubic feet. For a few days in July about 10,000 cu. ft. were blown, and then the maximum daily output, 173 tons (2,240 1b.), was reached. At all times the quality of the charcoal was poor, having been made from wood cut from three to four years before. Doubtless this furnace could have produced .200 tons of iron per day, even with this quality of charcoal, provided the supply had been sufficient; and with good charcoal I see no reason why it could not make as much iron per day as it has made with coke. During the one week of using a mixture of charcoal and coke, the changes in quantity of blast and composition of the slag followed each other so closely that no single condition could last long on the furnace. Grinding is the most energy consuming step in mineral processing, however, it is still poorly understood and its efficiency is difficult to monitor. Mill performances are traditionally measured at the mill discharge, on the basis of a mass percentage passing a certain sieve. This approach does not reflect what happens to the fines through milling. On another hand, if many macroscopic parameters, such as the percent solids of the pulp, its viscosity, or its mean residence time in the mill are known to be related to grinding efficiency, the link between these parameters and particle size distribution (PSD) is still unclear. Here, a methodology is established to understand the effect of ball mill operating conditions on particle size and shape distribution in the grinding process. The study focuses on the particular case of an Upper Group 2 (UG-2) platinum ore concentrator. Due to the very low grade of sulphide and PGM (Platinum group metals) in UG-2, grinding mechanisms are entirely control by gangue minerals. These two minerals have contrasted properties and PGM content and these properties immediately affect the entire recovery process. So, the grinding of both gangue minerals is studied on a size by size basis. At particle scale, three parameters are addressed: particle size, particle composition and particle shape. The specific behavior of chromite and silicate grains is demonstrated. As a conclusion, this study gives some clues to operate ball mills in a more efficient manner regarding chromite issue in the processing of UG-2. Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often on the order of 40%, and that bulk solids handling system deficiencies are the largest (>50%) class of lost opportunities. Root causes for underperformance of elements in material handling systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. To reduce or eliminate bulk solids handling problems in an existing system requires an analysis of troublesome handling equipment – for example, a concentrate transfer chute that experiences plugging, poor flow to the furnace, unacceptable dust generation, and spillage. These problems often lead to significant maintenance costs related to downtime and personnel time. Understanding the cause and cost of flow issues is the first step in troubleshooting the problem. Next, measuring the material’s flow properties is critical to providing design data required to develop a comprehensive scientific solution. In the case of a new installation, the design data is required to properly design the system right first time and prevent flow problems from occurring so that the new equipment works correctly from start-up. This paper highlights the cost of material handling problems and discusses the best approach to evaluate material handling system deficiencies. A case study is given of how Anglo American's operation in Barro Alto Brazil enjoyed a 5-month payback from a bulk solid transfer chute debottleneck project. INTRODUCTION When operating a plant or designing a greenfield or brownfield operation, the intent is to have perfect production days (PPD) each and every day. Money is made by moving material through the plant in a controlled manner to produce the desired product. Mining operations and copper concentration processes are at the most basic level a practice in bulk solids handling (BSH). Unfortunately, many of the project planning steps are overlooked, particularly related to BSH. Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a PPD and the actual average is often on the order of 40%, and that BSH system deficiencies are the largest (>50%) class of lost opportunities (Wellwood, 2017). Root causes for underperformance of elements in material handling systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. BSH issues are essentially baked into the fabricated plant and left to operations to accept the deficiencies and deal with them for the life of the mine. These deficiencies then become part of the normal operation of the mine and plant.

Slag from stainless steelmaking is known to disintegrate, which is an environmental problem and prevents the cooled slag from being utilized. This disintegration is due to the transformation from the ßto the ? polymorph of di-calcium silicate. The transformation is accompanied by an increase in volume of about 11% and a total disintegration of the slag. AOD slag from stainless steelmaking was re-melted in a laboratory induction furnace, together with olivine and calcinated dolomite, to investigate the prevention of disintegration by increased MgO content of the slag with small changes in CaO to SiO2ratio. The modified slag was examined with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The trials showed that an increased MgO content can change the mineral composition towards formation of more Merwinite and Bredigite, which prevents disintegration of the slag. Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

An experimental investigation of the precipitation behavior of the Dy2O3 containing slag during cooling was carried out in this work. The slag with composition 45 wt% SiO2—49 wt% CaO—6 wt% Dy2O3 was equilibrated at 1673, 1773 and 1873 K for 24 h in an argon atmosphere, and then quenched in water to determine the phase relations. The composition and microstructure of the equilibrated phases of the systems were determined by EPMA/WDS. The precipitation behavior of the REEs containing phases during cooling was studied by using an in-situ confocal scanning laser microscope (CLSM) observation technique combined with an infrared imaging furnace heating (IIF). Data resulting from this work aims to support further investigation on separation of rare earths from metallurgical slags.

"Gold occurs in Nova Scotia in three ways, saddle reefs, fissure veins, and fossil placers. Of these the saddle reefs are the commonest. They have been the source of most of the gold and have also been the subject of most of the literature on the gold occurrences.The Meguma or Gold-bearing series of Nova Scotia is a conformable succession of quartzite's and slates, possibly Precambrian in age, which have been folded into a number of anticlines and synclines that strike (Fig. 1) roughly east and west. This folding has been termed Acadian and is probably a westward continuation of the Caledonian revolution in Britain. It may have started in the Ordovician and continued through the Silurian and into the Lower Devonian. It was followed by the intrusion of the great Devonian granite batholiths. It is thought that the mineralization is connected with the late phases of the cooling of the granite. As the name saddle reef implies, the veins form on the crests and flanks of the anticlines, possibly in the synclinal troughs as well. The beds favoured by the solutions are the slates. The reason for this is apparent when it is realized that in order to fold over 30,000 feet of sediments (the thickness of the Meguma according to E. R. Faribault) through p radians of arc it is necessary to have a differential movement between the top and bottom beds of p times the thickness of the sediments. In the case of the Gold-bearing series, in which strong quartzite beds lie between incompetent slate beds, most of this differential movement was taken up in the slates. The evidence for this is the remarkably fine drag folding and the intense shearing and comminution of some of the beds of slate (Fig. 1). The quartzites exhibit some shearing and faulting, but there is little doubt that the greater permeability lay along the incompetent slate beds. The mineralizing solutions followed these beds and also passed from one slate bed to another through a joint or fault in the intervening bed of quartzite. These joining veins are called angulars in Nova Scotia. Within the veins the gold is in shoots and the real problem is to find out what controls the position and extent of the shoots."

In this investigation, which was conducted at the Metallurgical Research Plant, Lulea, Sweden, a series of experiments were carried out using a water-model to simulate the gas rinsing of a ladle containing liquid metal. The factors examined include the effect of gas flowrate, the position of a porous plug or lance, the immersion depth of the lance, and the geometry of the bath at the time of complete mixing. Mixing times were recorded by conductivity measurements. The results showed that there is a threshold level for mixing above which no advantage is to be gained from an increase in the gas flowrate. It is suggested that the results can be applied to rinsing ladles in working situations, the levels being approximately 270 dm3/min for 40 t ladles and 780 dm3/min for 150 t heats. The optimum siting of the lance or porous plug is a position that is three-quarters of the internal radius from the centre of the ladle with the lance penetrating as deeply as possible into the ladle. The best design of liquid bath is that having a diameter-to-height ratio of I. An equation was developed for the calculation, by dimensional analysis, of the time required for mixing during gas rinsing, and a comparison of the calculated mixing times with the results from production trials shows a satisfactory agreement (with a correlation factor of 0,91). Thus, an equation is available for the calculation of the stirring time needed to completely mix the bath in production situations.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10?40 km in length. These road networks are often not optimally designed and maintained and as a result, identifying and remediating road functional defects is problematic. Most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. This paper presents a haul road maintenance management system which utilizes an assessment of rolling resistance based on a functional performance evaluation of a haul road, together with mine haul truck operating cost models to derive the optimal frequency of road maintenance. A typical application is presented which illustrates the potential of the technique to manage maintenance as and where needed with resultant reduction in total road user costs and an improvement in service provided for the road user. "Crusher sizing and application in mining operations is the selection of a crusher or a series of crushers to reduce run of mine ore to a size suitable for either autogenous or conventional grinding. It is important that the crusher or crushers be sized to operate within the range to which they have been designed. By the range to which they have been designed, we mean that the reduction ration must be held between specified limits. Reduction ration is the relationship between feed size to product size.In todays plants reduction is usually accomplished in three stages by primary, secondary and tertiary crushers.Primary crushers are either jaw or gyratory and are designed to handle run of mine feed at an open side setting of 5-1/2” to 7”. Reduction ration should not exceed 7 to 1.Jaw CrushersThe model size of a jaw crusher signifies the feed opening. A model 60 x48 jaw has a feed opening 60” wide by 48” long. The 48” is the dimension between the top of the swing jaw and the top of the stationary jaw. The 60” is the width between the two side frames. The crusher open side setting is the discharge opening at the bottom of the crushing chamber with the jaws in an open position. When corrugated jaw plates are used, the open side setting is measured from tip of one jaw plate to the valley of the opposite jaw plate. If a jaw crusher has a 6” open side setting with a 1” jaw motion, you could also say it has a 5” closed side setting."

The challenges of increasingly scarce water resources and the risk of dam failures has seen the mining industry turn to sustainable tailings management solutions such as dewatering and dry stacking. Filtering tailings has been seen in the past as a cost-prohibitive process for larger throughput mines. However, as larger pressure filters are developed, the economic case for filtered tailings has gained traction.Focus has largely been placed on the correct design and operation of the filters. It is critical, however, that the material handling portion of the disposal system is also properly designed and operated. Thorough testing at laboratory and pilot scale to determine the conveying properties of the filtered material needs to be conducted. This testing will insure the material handling system meets the important availability needs of the mine even during periods of variability in the upstream processes and mine plan.The control system must also be robust and flexible in design to compensate for this upstream process variability. The major proportion of South African coal is extracted by the bord-and-pillar mining method which requires that the overlying strata be supported by pillars of coal. The stability of the pillars is a major safety concern. One of the factors which affects the strength of coal pillars is the intensity and nature of discontinuities in the coal seams. Current design methods for pillars assume that al the coal seams have equal strength and are equally disturbed by natural discontinuities, resulting in over-designed pillars in some cases and potentially unstable pillars in others. Research was carried out to determine the nature of discontinuities in coal seams and to assess their potential effect on pillar strength. It was found that large variations exist in the intensity of discontinuities in the different coal seams being mined. In addition, numerical model studies showed that the discontinuities could significantly reduce pillar strength if the width-to-height ratio of the pillars is small, but the effect decreases as the width-to-height ratio increases.

Many technical professionals (tp)* desire to occupy upper level management positions. But career paths for most scientists and engineers do not extend beyond their specific disciplines. This is unfortunate. Our technical frontiers are expanding so rapdily that it is difficult, if not impossible, to make sound top management decisions without understanding the technical complexities involved. Technical professionals often are not considered for upper level management positions because they lack the managerial and interpersonal skills necessary to become successful administrators. You've heard this before, but a key component of these skills is the ability to communicate. Technical professionals are often unable to communicate as well as they should with nontechnical professionals and nonprofessionals within the organizations that employ them. Communication is important for managerial success Communication is the network of interactions whereby knowledge and understanding are conveyed from one social set to another (Flippo and Munsinger, 1982). In order to be successful, managers must not only be "good" communicators, they must be "effective" communicators as well. Good communication occurs when managers are able to formulate and transmit their messages in such a way that they are received and understood. Effective communication goes one step further: It occurs when recipients accept messages as legitimate and respond to these messages in the manner desired. Before promotion into upper level positions, managers must have developed organizational skills (planning, decision making, organizing, and controlling) and interpersonal skills (directing, influencing, and motivating). Applying these skills effectively is difficult without a highly refined ability to communicate. Effective communication, then, is basic to managerial success. Nowhere, perhaps, has the importance of being able to communicate effectively been emphasized more than in Mintzberg's landmark study of managerial roles (Mintzberg, 1973). Mintzberg's results indicate that executives typically averaged 36 written and 16 verbal contacts a day. These contacts were both important and trivial. They generally occurred in a random manner. Time spent on each varied. Scheduled meetings averaged over an hour. Desk work, telephone calls, and unscheduled meetings required an average of 15 minutes or less. Why technical professionals have difficulty communicating Three reasons why technical professionals do not communicate well are: • The work motivational patterns and personal attitudes of technical professionals are not conducive to effective communication. • Students in technical professions are not encouraged by educational institutions to develop their communication skills. • Organizations do not insist that all technical professionals be able to communicate in the language of business. The work motivational patterns of most technical professionals are indicative of internals and high achievers (Hunt, Salisbury, and Whittington, 1968). As internals, they believe they control their own destinies. As high achievers, they believe that task accomplishment is a primary indicator of success. To ensure a task is completed in the manner desired, tp's attempt to structure and define work situations so they alone are responsible for results. TPs consider the task accomplished when they, and perhaps other tp's, are satisfied with the results. From the tp's perspective, the task may have been completed. From a communication standpoint, two other factors may apply. First, solving the problem required very little interaction (and thus, communication) with others. Second, the tp's, considering the task accomplished, have little concern for how their "technical" answers will be translated to nontechnical persons needing

The Similkameen Copper Project located near Princeton, British Columbia, is operated by the Similkameen Mining Company Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Company. The orebodies for this project are located on both sides of the Similkameen River for which the project is named. The project involves the processing of an average of 15,000 STPD of andesitic ore, mineralized largely with Chalcopyrite, at an overall plant availability rating of 90 percent. Project life is nominally 15 years. Design for the plant and its ancillary facilities was undertaken by Bechtel Corporation with procurement and construction management by Canadian Bechtel Limited. Construction began in June 1970 and first ore was introduced into process in March 1972. This paper concerns itself only with the project tailing system. The processing plant is located on a bench of glacial stream gravels which overlooks the river canyon. This site represented the only relatively flat area of sufficient size to accomodate processing facilities near to the ore- bodies. Reference is made to Figs. 1 and 2 showing the relationship of project features in plan and profile.

Strength and physical property testing of coal is conducted regularly by the Arch Mineral Corporation as part of reserve exploration. Pillar design and mine layout are the primary applications for the coal strength data. Distinct differences in pillar behavior were observed during longwall mining at a mine in Southeastern Kentucky. Horizontal and vertical variation in both triaxial and uniaxial compressive strength was observed within the four (4) benches of the Harlan seam. Similarly, geographical variations in coal strength were noted across the Harlan seam reserve. During the past three decades substantial research efforts have been focused upon coal pillar behavior and the refinement of pillar design methodologies. Ironically, little attention was directed to integrating the variability of coal strength into pillar design. The authors examine, through the presentation of case history data, i) typical industrial practice with respect to establishing a database of coal strength for use in pillar design and stability analysis, ii) approaches in which the observed variation in strength in the Harlan seam is integrated into pillar design and stability analyses, and to iii) propose standards for coal cube testing
