The solubility of nitrogen in pure molybdenum was measured over the temperature range 2173 to 2473 K and up to one atmosphere (101 kPa) of nitrogen gas pressure. Both thermochemical and kinetic aspects of this phenomenon were considered in this study. The solution of nitrogen in molybdenum may be expressed by the reaction 1/2N2(g) = {N} (Mo,s), for which the standard Gibbs energy is given by the expression {A}G° = 78,500 + 27.36T Joules/g atom N. The formation of molybdenum nitrides, specifically Mo2N, was considered. Attention was also focused on the mechanism of nitrogen solution in molybdenum. Estimates of the diffusivity of nitrogen atoms in solid molybdenum were derived from the kinetic data.

The methane emissions from an advancing coal mine section were continuously monitored for 120 days. During this time, the section advanced 2,000 feet into virgin Pittsburgh coalbed producing 54,565 tons of coal with a total methane emission of 91 million ft3. Analysis of the data gathered showed that daily methane emissions did not correlate with overburden thickness and daily coal production. A good correlation was found between the daily methane emission and the average length of rib exposed to virgin coal.

"Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a coal-mass model to realistically simulate the deformation and loading behaviors of the ribs of coal pillars in underground coal mines. The scale-dependent properties (stiffness and strength) of coal material were considered in the coal-mass model. In this paper the orientation of face cleat with respect to driving direction was integrated in the coal-mass model. The controlling parameters (dimensionless coal-mass scale and fracture strains) of the modified coal-mass model were calibrated using a published case study of coal pillar strength. Numerical models with wide ranges of controlling parameters were conducted to simulate the test pillar. The best match between the numerical modeling results and the measured stresses and deformations was achieved by using a coal-mass scale of 30 and fracture plastic shear and tensile strains of 3.25% and 0.325 %, respectively. INTRODUCTION The failure of coal pillar ribs by itself are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can indirectly contribute to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the past decade, rib failures have resulted in 12 fatalities, representing 28% of the ground-fall fatalities in U.S. underground coal mines. Mining depth has always played a very important role in assessing rib stability. Gauna and Mark (2010) completed an analysis of rib fatalities that occurred between 1996 and 2010. One of their most prominent and influential findings was the identification of a relationship among fatalities, depth, and mining height. Therefore, Coal rib stability will continue to be a challenge for future deeper mines in U.S. coal basins. In the past several decades, research efforts have focused on roof support. The current rib control practice in U.S. coal mines is to select rib bolts through a trial-and-error approach (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Rib failure incidents can be can be substantially reduced or even eliminated by adopting an engineering-based coal rib design approach. The factors affecting rib stability in coal mines are numerous and mutually dependent. These factors include but not limited to mining height and overburden depth, interburden thickness for multiple-seam mining, coal strength, cleat density, entry direction with respect to cleat orientation, existence or absence of partings in the coal, percentage of extracted roof and/or floor rock, density of rib bolt support (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Moreover, it is difficult to isolate the particular effect of a specific factor on the overall rib stability. Therefore, a reliable empirical rib design approach is not achievable because it requires a significant number of case histories to be collected in order to have a reasonable range of all of the critical parameters. However, numerical modeling can be a practical tool to assist with rib support design if the modeling is realistic, which can only be achieved through calibration and validation of the numerical model against field data."

A spectrochemical method of slag analysis is descibed which utilizes fusion of the sample with a flux, then cooling and crushing to put all samples into a common form. The powder, is then fed onto adhesive tape and passed through a spark by means of a special device to provide very reproducible discharge conditions. Combined with a direct-reading optical emission instrument, this system provides speed and accuracy of antilysis heretofore unobtainable for. slag samples by any other method. THERE are many suggested methods for spectro-chemical analysis of slags. The most important are fusion-pellet methods and solution methods. In our company the fusion-pellet method has been used earlier, and is described by Lounamaa. W. H. Tingle and C. K. Matocha have made refinements of the pellet method.' A Committee of the British Iron and Steel Research Association has investigated different methods of spectrochemical analysis of slags. Its purpose was to formulate a method which would give the complete analysis in 30 min with an accuracy of ±3 pct. The committee recommends a solution technique, which was thought to correspond best to their requirements. The method to be described is a fusion-tape method. The sample is isoformed by fusion and grinding. The powder is analyzed with the tape technique. The tape machine and some of its applications are described earlier.4'5 The powder to be analyzed is continuously fed onto a moving adhesive tape, which passes through the spark gap. The sparks break through the tape and vaporize and excite the material to be analyzed. The most outstanding feature of the tape machine is its very high reproducibility. The concept of isoformation has been introduced earlier.= It means a pretreatment of the samples to make them uniform from the spectralanalytical point of view, i.e., cancelling systematic differences between the samples. The purpose of the isoformation is to reduce the influence of particle size, as well as chemical and mineral composition. Before describing the isoformation by fusion plus grinding, which is the purpose of this paper, a few words will be said about two other types of isoformations, i.e., grinding with buffer and ion exchange plus grinding as they have been considered during the application of the tape technique for slag analysis. Grinding with buffer might be a sufficient isoformation in some special cases, where the mineral composition is defined. The time of grinding must, however, be rather long, at least 5 to 10 min, even when using such an efficient mill as the Swing Mill from Messrs. Siebtechnik, Mühlheim, Germany. This type of isoformation is not recommended due to its limitations and due to the fact that the gain in time compared with the fusion technique is almost negligible. The principle of ion exchange plus grinding and some of its applications have been described.5 The following elements of interest in slag analysis can be determined in this way: Na, K, Cu, Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni. "As explosives become more widely used in urban and other congested areas, governmental regulations pertaining to their use are becoming more pervasive and stringent. This is forcing the blasting industry to review its entire spectrum of operations. Greater attention is now being paid not only to the design and layout of blasts, but also to the monitoring and recording of their after-effects for both legal and business reasons.Current PracticesThe major users of explosives in urban areas are quarry operators and construction companies. A characteristic of both of these industries, at least in recent years, is a relatively low margin of profit. This, coupled with the fact that their use of explosives is relatively intermittent, prevents them from having the kind of professional consulting services that blasting operations really warrant in today's regulatory environment. When such services are obtained, they tend to be directed more at the design and execution of the blast than at the recordkeeping function. The records that are kept tend to be more in the form of a summary of the consultant's design data as opposed to the kind of after-effect detail that is necessary.The more experienced consultants and operators now realize that at least as much attention must be paid to the record-keeping as to the design work. Regulatory bodies at all levels of government are insisting on the availability of such records.Unfortunately, the instrumentation in use today for taking such measurements does not lend itself to the practice of intermittent consulting. Current monitoring and recording instruments are based on so-called analog technology of the type that has traditionally been applied to the monitoring of earthquakes. They require set-up and calibration procedures which must be repeated each time the instrument is moved, or the blasting parameters are changed, as well as complex total analysis of the recorded data. This can lend to confusion and a dilution of responsibility for anything other than the design work and possibly some summary reporting."

For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

One of the more pressing engineering problems for deep longwall mines in the Southern Appalachian Basin is to design longwall systems that will eliminate catastrophic coal pillar failure from the working environment. The purpose of this study is to quantify the behavior of a particular size abutment pillar prone to burst or bump. Because the 24.4-111 (80-ft) square abutment study pillar is within the pillar size commonly used in this region, understanding the behavior of this pillar should aid in future efforts to design optimum mining strategies. This research has attempted to construct the pillar stress and roof-to-floor convergence profiles in order to evaluate the ultimate strength, deformation modulus, visco-elastic deformation, and violent failure characteristics of the pillar during longwall mining. This information reflects the overriding influence of the local geologic characteristics on bursts, provides the field measurements needed to verify concurrent modeling studies, and suggest some basic mechanisms associated with the coal pillar bursts discussed in this paper.

Accurate positioning information is a central step in the process of increasing automation and digitalization in the mining industry. Underground mine environments are prime examples for GNSS-denied environments that pose several additional challenges for the employed indoor positioning system (IPS). This work presents an ultra-wideband (UWB)–based system specifically tailored for underground mine environments. Initially, the UWB technology is reviewed and basic concepts of IPS are explained. Both software and hardware are described in detail, including positioning algorithms, electrical circuitry, and the mining-compatible enclosure. Finally, the results from field tests in an underground mine are presented and positioning performance and the influence of dilution of precision (DOP) on positioning results are empirically evaluated. The results show that the localization errors are mostly below 1 m. Individual zones of high localization errors are suspected to be caused by noise interference. Significant DOP influence due to the mining drift geometry can be confirmed. The system shows promising localization results for different mining applications, while influences negatively impacting the accuracy are presented as items for future research.

Newmont Gold Company, formerly Carlin Gold Mining Company, is a publicly owned corporation, 95% owned by Newmont Mining Corporation. Newmont Gold Company has operated gold recovery operations North of Carlin, Nevada, since 1965. Development of the Gold Quarry ore body, 19 kilometers south of the original mine, resulted in the decision to construct gold recovery and ancillary facilities in what is referred to as the Southern Area. Plant No. 2, located 11 kilometers North of Carlin, Nevada, was designed to treat 6350 tonnes per day of oxidized gold bearing ore assaying 2.5 grams per tonne of Au at an average recovery of 87%. Flowsheet development conducted by Newmont personnel resulted in the decision to construct a carbon-in-pulp recovery circuit preceded by two-stage grinding, Detailed engineering was done at Toronto by Bechtel of Canada beginning on January 1, 1984. Actual construction began on March 1, 1984, and was completed in June, 1985. First feed was run on June 22, 1985.

In September of 2000, Cowin and Company, Inc., contracted with Paramont Coal Corporation to construct a large decline approximately 820 m (2,700 feet) in overall length at a grade of 8 degrees to the Lower Banner Coal Seam. This paper will discuss the methods used by the contractor and owner to overcome the unique problems required to construct this tunnel in a coal mine environment. The problems include, initial design considerations, equipment selection, ventilation, ground control, control of water in?ows, and placement of concrete.

Laboratory data obtained from a Bureau of Mines rotary air core of a well near Sugar Grove , Warren County , Pa . , were instrumental in initiating hydraulic fracturing in the area to stimulate oil recovery from Glade sand oil reservoirs . This report outlines the general geology , lease development , reservoir- rock characteristics , and oil - production history of Glade and Clarendon sand reservoirs in Warren County . The methods of well completion for single- stage and multiple- stage hydraulic fracturing of old and new wells are discussed , and a range of hydraulic fracture treatment data from 29 Glade sand and 10 Clarendon sand wells is presented . A composite decline curve representing oil - production data from six wells shows probable results of hydraulic fracturing . Average cumulative oil production during the first 100 days after hydraulic fracturing with a sand - carrying liquid is compared with production after conventional shooting with liquid nitroglycerin .

Tool manufacturers are required to provide declarations of vibration emission values in order to sell their tools within Europe. To ensure that users can compare results obtained from different manufacturers, the declared values must be obtained using a methodology as specified in the relevant test code (such as in the ISO 8662 series of standards). In most cases, the vibration emission values obtained using test codes under-estimate the vibration that an operator will be exposed to when using the tool on a work-site. A further problem with manufacturers’ data is that usually only a single value is provided for a tool. This is despite many factors affecting the vibration emission, including inserted tool type, work piece, operator technique, tool condition. New improved test codes are in the process of being developed. In order to provide guidance to users on how to interpret manufacturers’ data, a Draft CEN Technical Report (Draft CEN/TR 15350 (2005)) was developed. Part of the CEN/TR provides multiplication factors for combinations of task and tool type. For example, data obtained from electrical hammer drills (tested according to EN 60745-2-6:2003) should be multiplied by 2, for hammering applications, in order to obtain an estimate of the vibration emission during work. In response to concerns from industry, the UK trade association OPERC have, in collaboration with hire companies and tool manufacturers, established a freely accessible online database of tool emission values based on independent tests carried out under simulated work-site conditions. This paper reports some of the data obtained from electrical hammer drills, highlighting the range of emission values that can be obtained for a tool. Data from many other tool types are also included in the database. Methods Tri-axial hand-arm vibration was measured at both handles of each of 19 electrical hammer drills, in accordance with ISO 5349-1 (2001). Each tool was measured with three experienced operators and at least 5 runs were completed for each operator. Tools were tested using a range of appropriate new bits from 4 to 40 mm diameter. The minimum number of bits for a tool was 3; the maximum number was 29. 146 tool / bit combinations are reported here, representing about 2200 individual 6-axis measurements. Operators were required to drill vertically into a concrete block with a compressive strength after 28 days of 40 N/mm². Two drills (1 and 15) were battery powered; others were powered using a 110V transformer supply.

A field test was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Cyprus Plateau Starpoint No. 2 Mine. near Price. UT. to study the support rock interaction mechanics. Twelve instrumented. fully grouted roof holts and eight sagmeters were installed in the roadway of a two-entry gate road to measure load changes and roof movements. Readings were taken during section development and as each longwall panel passed the test area. Loads that resulted from development of the en- tries were higher than would be expected if simple suspension of the roof rock was the sole cause of loading. When the first longwall face passed the test section massive beam behavior was exhibited over the entry and adjacent pillar. However, no significant localized bending was detected at any of the strain gauge locations. After the first panel passed the test section. all the roof bolts had at least one zone where the steel had yielded. Loading continued to increase. and when the face from the second panel was adjacent to the test section. 70 pct of the strain gauges at the 6-. 1%. and 30-in locations had passed the yield point of the steel roof bolt. However, even at these high load levels, the supporting pattern was sufficient to provide adequate reinforcement to the mine roof.

Room-and-pillar mining is a mining method used in the United States to extract coal from underground, and pillar recovery is widely practiced for maximizing coal recovery and mining economics. Under certain conditions, room-and-pillar mining can create high stresses in coal pillars resulting in a coal outburst. These outbursts represent one of the more severe safety hazards in underground coal mines, potentially causing injuries and fatalities. Over the past ten years, coal outbursts have resulted in three fatalities in U.S. room-and-pillar mines. Though coal outbursts generally occur under deep cover, they are more likely to occur during pillar recovery and under multiple-seam mining conditions. Coal outbursts are generally associated with strong roof and floor and heavy loading of coal pillars, but it is difficult to predict whether, where, and when they will occur. In this respect, risk management provides a proactive tool to prevent coal outbursts in room-and-pillar mining by identifying mining areas with high risk of outburst and mitigating the risk accordingly.

Full-scale rupture tests were conducted on 508 mm (20 in) diameter API X-60 5.7 mm wall thickness pipes containing either axial semi-elliptical cracks or simulated corrosion defects with equivalent depths ranging from 20 to 60 percent thickness. In the case of the cracks, the failure pressures were predicted with reasonable accuracy when considering a level 3 failure assessment diagram (FAD) procedure based on API 579, as compared to level 2 FAD, since the mechanical properties were known. In both cases, the accuracy improved for shallower cracks. Considering simulated corrosion defects, the RSTRENG approach provided more reliable results on predicting the collapse pressure. For a similar depth and profile, the cracked pipes failed at a lower pressure than those containing simulated corrosion defects of equivalent depth.

The Newmont Boddington Orebody (NBO) is a large, diffuse Au/Cu orebody in Western Australias South-West corner with approximately 20Moz Au in current Reserves. The current sulphide Resource is reported after calculation with the non-linear estimation technique Uniform Conditioning to account for the mining selectivity being smaller than the average drillhole spacing. Simulation of Au grade is also run over the entire orebody reviewing risk and uncertainty. There are differences in results from the two methods. These have been investigated and the lessons learned of the influencing parameters and effect of technique alone, are helpful for applications to other orebodies.

Phelps Dodge introduced a process improvement model known as Quest for Zero in 2001. In 2004, the focus of Quest for Zero shifted from corporate-led initiatives to projects led by site personnel. The Hydrometallurgical Division at Morenci focused on two (2) significant process improvements: reducing electrolyte bleed and organic losses. In September 2004, Morenci kicked off a bleed reduction project to reduce electrolyte bleed by 45%. By the end 2005, electrolyte bleed was reduced by 55% through understanding and reduction of variance. Significant process changes made during this time period include changes in acid-addition strategy, reduction of uncontrolled bleed, and optimization of bleed placement. In April 2005, the organic reduction project began with the goal of reducing losses by 15%. Operational improvements during this project included improved organic recovery systems, mixer speed optimization, and picket fence installation. By the end 2005, this project reduced organic losses by 35% and current losses are 48% lower than at the start of the project. These projects and smaller Questfor Zero projects have resulted in sustainable annualized savings of $13 million in Morenci hydrometallurgical operations. Through the use of Six Sigma tools, process variances can be controlled and reduced.

This plant is situated in the borough of Pottstown, on the banks of the Schuylkill river, between the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, on a plot of about 125 acres, most of which is reserved for future extensions. About 45 acres are to be used for houses, 40 of which have already been built. The accompanying plan will give a clear idea of the general arrangement of the works. Beginning at the lower or eastern end, the first building is the basic-cinder grinding-plant. At present, it consists of a 2000 mm. Jenisch ball-mill (Kugelfallmühle) similar to those used so extensively for grinding basic cinder in Europe. It was built by Herman LÖhnert, of Bromberg. The mill is very simple in design, and efficient in execution. About 13 horse-power is required to run it, and the average output is 20,000 pounds in 10 hours. The best work we have done is 29,000 pounds in 10 hours, with perfectly dry cinder. From 95 to 98 per cent. of the product will pass through a sieve with 100 meshes to the inch, while from 70 to 75 per cent. will pass through a 150-mesh sieve. The mill has been in service since last March, part of the time on double-turn, and the renewals and repairs have been very slight. The product of the plant is sold as a fertilizer. It runs from 18 to 24 per cent. in phosphoric acid, about 14 of which is reverted. The merits of this fertilizer were explained by Mr. W. H. Morris, at the Baltimore meeting of February, 1892 (Trans., xxi., 232), and by Mr. W. B. Phillips, at the Birmingham meeting of 1888 (Trans., xvii., 84). The results obtained by its use in Europe, where over 600,000 tons were used last year, are well known. Near the cinder-grinding plant will be situated the new machineshop, which is now being erected. The next buildings contain the brick-making plant and ovens.
