A CLAY, sand, and gravel deposit known as the "buried valley" of the Susquehanna River is situated in the Northern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania near Wilkes-Barre. The presence of this buried valley and the uncertainty regarding the extent and physical condition of the water-bearing valley-fill deposits have made great care necessary in mining operations to avoid breaking the strata between the mine workings and the valley-fill deposits to the extent that inundation of the mine workings would follow. The principal factor that threatens to cut short the life of the anthracite industry, to curtail production, and to affect the economic structure of the people and business dependent on anthracite for their livelihood is inundation of anthracite mines (6,7).3

"The Rain and SMZ mines from 1987 to 1994 produced a total of22.0 t of gold from a pre-mine reserve of 14.24 Mt of ore grading 2.13 g/t Au.Gold at Rain is hosted within the basal portion of the Mississippian Webb Formation. ·Mineralization is closely tied to the Rain Fault which is interpreted to be the main feeder for the deposit. Multiple collapse and hydrothermal breccia events provided permeability for the mineralizing fluids in the otherwise unreactive siltstones. Major alteration events include: decalcification and dolomitization of the Devils Gate Limestone; and silicification, baritization, argillization and oxidation of the Webb Fm. Six ore types based on XRD and visual rock chip Jogging have been identified: siliceous ore containing >40% quartz and <30% barite; siliceous-baritic ore containing mostly silica but >30% barite; baritic ore containing >40% barite; argillaceous ore containing >40% total clays (including alunite); calcareous ore containing mostly calcite and dolomite; and carbonaceous ore which has significant pyrite and organic carbon. Metallurgical testing of the oxide leach grade ores found that recoveries, on -1.3 cm crushed material, were greater than 70%. Results also found that Rain ore has strong grind dependency due to silica encapsulation.The Rain leach pad was commissioned in 1988, and to date 9.3·Mt at an average grade of0.65 g/t Au have been placed. Life to date recovery, through December 1995, is approximately 51 %, for a total of3.87 t of gold produced. Two major factors have contributed to the low leach recoveries at Rain when compared with the metallurgical testing: 1) More argillaceous ore than expected was placed on the pad especially late in the mine life and 2) approximately 50% of the tons placed were run-of-mine with no agglomeration."

Much has been said and written about uneconomic and evil marketing practices in the oil industry, including such factors as loaning of equipment, price cutting and secret prices, commercial discounts, abuses of credit cards and coupon books, and so forth. It is not my purpose here to add to the discussion of those problems, but rather to attempt a discussion of some of the more basic factors in the general distribution economies of the industry. The economics of distribution in the oil industry cannot be regarded apart from the general economics of the industry as a whole. The attempt to regard them as separate has led many people into the fallacy of believing that the responsibility for the apparent evils in the marketing end of the business lay entirely at the door of the marketing end. Such a view fails to take cognizance of many underlying factors; we can only expect to understand the distribution economics of the industry if we understand its general economics. We must realize also that the oil industry today is essentially the gasoline industry. The oil industry may be said to have begun about 60 years ago. At the outset it was concerned chiefly with the manufacture and sale of kerosene, lubricating oils and greases. Gasoline was then a most obnoxious by-product. The early oil-marketing company was engaged almost exclusively in refining and marketing—it did not concern itself with production but bore the relation to it merely of a purchaser. It may be said that the urge of marketing development in those days, therefore, came from the refining and marketing end of the business. The raw material had not yet begun to exert its enormous pressure, nor had the producer of crude oil acquired a direct interest in the sale of the ultimate finished products. Since then great changes have taken place. With the development of the automobile came a vast new demand for the raw material from which gasoline could be made. No longer could the refining and marketing companies be indifferent to the source of that raw material, particularly in view of the pessimistic outlook then presented as to the probable quantity of oil in existence. This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are made primarily to provide preliminary information to the Department of Interior agencies and to others concerned with planning the proposed Federal power development within the Missouri River Basin . The present report has been designed to permit public distribution of factual data obtained . The field investigations were made during the late fall of 1947 and the summer of 1948. Information on mineral occurrences in several areas in Sweet Grass County also are included in this report because of their close proximity to Park County . Practically all known metallic mineral deposits within Park County were investigated ; some nonmetallic mineral deposits also were investigated. The investigations of the metallic mineral deposits in Park County cannot be considered complete ; some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been missed . Many of the underground openings , especially at the long inactive properties , no longer are accessible ; consequently , much of the information regarding history their and development necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications .

"INTRODUCTIONThe Hemlo area is located in Northern Ontario, some 350 km east of Thunder Bay along highway 17. Hemlo is Canada's largest, recent discovery of gold ore. Three companies, Lac, Noranda, and Teck are currently developing mines and processing facilities in the area. A combined milling capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes per day will ultimately be available in the area. The gold yield will be between 750,000 to 1,000,000 ozs. per year. This will slightly more than double Ontario's gold production but only represents 2.5% of the total world gold production.Lac Minerals Ltd. is substantially committed to the gold mining business. Lac currently operates four (4) gold mines and mills and produces 300,000 ozs. per year. Lac's Hemlo development will put the company in the position of number one gold producer in Canada.The Lac Hemlo ore body has an estimated reserve of 37 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t. The mining will take place at an initial rate of 3,000 t/d commencing in the first quarter of 1986. The mine and plant will be expanded to 6,000 t/d in 1988. At this capacity, Lac will be the largest producer in the Hemlo area.1. GEOLOGYThe orebody is divided into two (2) zones for mining purposes. The 'A' Zone is to the east and dips to the Northeast from surface to 300 m below surface. This zone has a strike length of 250 m to 300 m at an average width of 20 m. The upperpart of the zone will be mined by open pit and the remainder from underground. The 'B' Zone, to the north west of the 'A' Zone, although lined up is not necessarily an extension of 'A' Zone. 'B' Zone has a known strike length of 600 m and is open to depth and along the strike. It is over 70 m wide in the core. This zone holds most of the property's known reserves. 'C' Zone with narrow gold zones is under exploration in the south west portion of the property."

Through 1996 and 1997, CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) conducted a project to study the Phalen Mine’s 7 East longwall ventilation network to help determine methane emission patterns that were having a negative impact on coal production. Increased methane emissions were primarily related to mining depth and were also affected by the influence of a large sandstone body located above the worked seam. The research included the installation of tube bundle systems to monitor waste (gob) methane and pressure differentials. The focus of this paper is on the novel use of tracer gas techniques that helped shed light on the performance of the ventilation system and in determining the methane migration paths in the waste.

The White Pine Copper Company, subsidiary of Copper Range Company, is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The offices, plant, and mine are six miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County. Employing 1700 people, White Pine is the largest single industry in the Upper Peninsula. 970 underground employees produce 16, 700, tons of ore daily. From this tonnage 363,400 pounds of refined Lake Copper are produced in various shapes as specified by the customer. The following paper explains the geology of the ore body and briefly outlines present mining methods. It enumerates the reasons for considering longwall mining of a hardrock* ore body and the preliminary investigations leading to the decision to undertake the initial test panel. Selection of the initial test panel location is covered in detail. Equipment choice and reasons for that choice are described as well as selection and training of personnel.

Fine colloidal gold near Carlin, Nevada is disseminated in leached carbonate strata of the Roberts Mountains Formation in the Lynn "window" of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault. The ore body is generally stratiform and is more or less conformable to altered beds near the top of the formation, underlying Devonian limestones. Two sequences of mineralization are recognized: ( 1) an earlier base metal-barite assemblage related to early Cretaceous intrusives (121 ± 5 m.y.), and (2) a later low temperature Au-As-Hg-Sb assemblage of near surface emplacement. The earlier sequence consisting of sparse galena and sphalerite in barite with anomalous amounts of zinc, lead, nickel and copper, associated with dikes of dacitic composition, is of little economic importance. The later sequence of gold, realgar, cinnabar, and stibnite associated with extensive silicification and argillic alteration of limestone beds, has resulted in important deposits of gold. Argillic alteration of hydrothermally leached carbonate strata has provided the environment in which the most prominent gold deposition took place. Carbonate minerals in the limestone host rock have been replaced by microcrystalline quartz and chalcedony to form stratiform silica masses and recrystallized lenses of euhedral quartz. Zones of porous silicification are light gray to white, elliptical in shape, and more or less follow bedding. Silicification is bordered by argillic alteration and pyritization. Deposition of gold usually lies in a zonal pattern that encircles chimney areas of silicification.

In November 1999 Waihi Gold Mining Company commissioned its new crushing and conveying plant used to transport both ore and waste from the Martha Mine to its ore processing plant and also its tailings dam construction area. To date, a record monthly throughput of 854 000 tonnes throughput has been achieved. This paper outlines the measures taken subsequent to the commissioning of the system to achieve greater than design throughput and to mitigate the environmental and safety issues associated with operating the system in the middle of a town.

"Although diamond mining is a relative newcomer to the Canadian mining industry, with the first diamond mine coming on stream in 1998, Canada is already a significant producer of high quality diamonds. This paper will review diamond production trends and highlight some of the projects currently under development, which have the potential to enhance Canada’s role as a significant diamond producer.Diamond recovery plants generally incorporate well-established mineral processing and recovery techniques, with issues such as product security, cut-off sizes, and diamond preservation becoming important considerations when developing process flowsheets. A diamond processing plant must achieve three key objectives, namely:• Liberation of the diamonds from the host rock;• Separation of the heavy minerals, which include the diamonds, from the host rock;• Recovery of the diamonds from the heavy mineral concentrates.Processing technologies and equipment commonly utilized in diamond processing plants will be reviewed and some of the significant issues associated with each option briefly discussed.Typical process flowsheets will be presented.Finally, an overview of De Beers’ Victor diamond project, located in northern Ontario, will be provided. This potentially significant diamond producer is currently at a pre-feasibility stage of development.DIAMONDS IN CANADAWorld Diamond ProductionCommercial diamond mining commenced in earnest with the discovery of the Kimberley diamondfields in South Africa in the late 1800s, and this resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of diamonds. As can be seen from figure 1, world diamond production, mainly from South Africa, Angola, Congo, and Namibia, remained relatively constant through the early 1900s until the development of the large Russian kimberlite pipes in the 1950s. Production increased again in the 1960s and 70s with the development of the Botswana mines, but the most significant increase in global production came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which came on stream in 1983 and produced a peak of almost 43 million carats in 1994, representing approximately 40% of the world market. Production from Argyle has since fallen-off as grades have declined and the strip ratio has increased with the deepening of the open pit."

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

The deformation modes of rhenium have been identified as those typical of the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium whose c/a ratios, in common with rhenium, are less than ideal for close packing. Slip is observed on (1010), (1011), and (0001) planes and twinning on (1121), (1122), and (1012) planes. The very high rate of work hardening is believed to be associated with intersecting partial dislocations on two (1010) systems which can combine to form sessile barriers. If the stacking fault energy is low, as postulated by Seeger, these barriers should be strong and not easily bypassed by cross slipping. Such an explanation could also account for the very small temperature dependence of the yield stress which was observed. RHENIUM is interesting scientifically as a member of the group of high melting point hexagonal metals: titanium, beryllium, and zirconium with a c/a ratio less than that for ideal close packing. Unlike them, however, it work hardens at a very high rate. This rate is greater and continues to a much higher degree of deformation than for nickel, normally considered to have a high rate of work hardening. This paper presents experimental observations on the modes of deformation of rhenium and, by comparison with other hexagonal metals, some speculation on the cause of the high work hardening. MATERIALS Johnson, Matthey rhenium powder of both 99.9 pct and 99.5 pct purity, see Table I, was compacted at 10 tons per sq in., part sintered at 1350°C in vacuo, and finally arc melted in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace to produce small buttons. Little difference was observed in the as-cast hardness or working down behavior of the two purities suggesting that either silicon and potassium do not have a significant effect on the working properties of rhenium or they were lost during arc melting. SPECIMEN PREPARATION The cast structure was broken up by cold-rolling with inter-stage annealing at 1600o or 1800°C in a vacuum high-frequency furnace using a tungsten susceptor. Strip for tensile testing was taken from two thicknesses of material 0.011 and 0.064 in. The former with intermediate anneals at 1800°C had a grain size of 900 grains per sq mm, while the latter with inter-stage annealing at 1600°C had a grain size of 3600 grains per sq mm. A coarse grain size was obtained by secondary recrystallization in a half button cold-worked by 30 pct reduction. Annealing times of from half an hour to several hours at 2200° to 2600°C in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace1 resulted in grains of up to 2 mm diam.

Methane is recognized as one of the prime causes of underground mine disasters around the globe. A cost-effective mine ventilation system and methane control is required to ensure a safe and productive environment in an underground mine whilst keeping energy usage and operating cost at minimum. Typically methane enters a mine environment or tunnel from localized distributed sources at high initial concentration. Hence, an understanding of its dispersion from discrete sources is important to design a methane management system via effective ventilation. This study employs computational fluid dynamics to model methane dispersion in an underground tunnel which has a number of discrete sources of methane and effective ways to dilute and or disperse it. Air flow distribution within the tunnel as well as methane dispersion is simulated by solving the governing transport equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions. First, the effectiveness of ventilation duct placement is examined. Several possibilities are explored and investigated. It is found that the common configuration utilized in underground mine performs best as compared to other configurations in maintaining the concentration of methane below permissible levels. Next, a novel intermittent airflow ventilation system is proposed and evaluated via simulation with the goal of reducing the energy cost whilst maintaining methane level in the mining face below the allowable level. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate effects of various factors influencing the effectiveness and performance of this novel intermittent ventilation system. This study will provide some new ideas for designing an efficient and effective underground mine ventilation system by lowering the net average amount of air that needs to be circulated in the tunnel for a safe operation. DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco&apos;s Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today&apos;s crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Nuclear logging was tested for the in situ determination of Fe, Si, and Al in iron ore blastholes with field tests at the BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Mount Waleback Mine. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was used to determine percentages of Fe and Si while natural gamma logging was employed for the determination of Al. The accuracy given by nuclear logging is comparable to the accuracy provided by the laboratory analysis which was determined by taking the average of four samples collected from the cuttings deposited on the surface around the perimeter of a drill hole. The work also indicated that there is a chance of determining Al by PGNAA.

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines project to develop new or improved materials for metallurgical furnace applications, the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Research Center has conducted research to develop a reproducible laboratory test for evaluating the resistance of refractories to molten slags. Tests were conducted with a slag representative of slag used to produce mineral wool. A rotating cylindrical furnace was lined with the brick being tested, and it was operated at temperatures up to 1,660° C for periods ranging from 8 to 32 hours. The effects of such variables as slag temperature, rotational velocity, charge rate, and contact time on refractory erosion were determined. The research demonstrated the reproducibility of the test procedure developed.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines experimental test program which evaluated the effectiveness of using high explosives to enhance orebody permeability. To determine the effect of stress on the fracture network generated by blasting, fifteen single-hole laboratory tests in granite blocks up to .067 m3 (2.4 ft3) in size were blasted using .12 to .20m (4.8 to 8.0 in) of 1.6xl0-3-, 3.2xl0-3-, or 6.5xl0-3-kg (25-, 50-, or 100-grain) detonating cord. In situ stresses were simulated using polyaxial load cells to apply uniform stresses of 1.72xl06 to 1.76xl07 Pa (250 to 2550 psi). All of the blocks were sawed to expose the blast-induced fracture patterns for analysis.

Mintek has been developing Pt-based alloys for high temperature applications in aggressive environments, for example, land-based turbine engines, to replace the currently used nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs). The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert and has a higher melting point, the Pt-based alloys can potentially be used at higher temperatures. The greater chemical inertness of the Pt-based alloys compared to the NBSAs means that coatings can be simpler, or perhaps not even used at all, depending on the environment. TEM work was done at NIMS, Japan, to investigate the changes in the microstructure o f Pt-Al and Pt-Al-Ir alloys at elevated temperatures using in-situheating up to1100°C. Initial casting trials showed that work needs to be done to optimise casting parameters before commercialisation can take place. Room temperature tensile tests were performed and results were variable mainly due to microstructural differences. The alloy hardnesses were in the order of 300-350HV with ultimate tensile strengths of ~800 MPa and elongations of less than 10%. "This paper is based on work carried out to examine the feasibility of increasing the smelting rate of two oil-fired calcine-charged reverberatory furnaces . Various constraints prevented physical enlargement of the furnaces and so allention turned to the use of preheated combustion air or oxygen enrichment to bring about the required increase in production. As a basis for further calculation, a furnace heat balance is determined using the smelting metallurgy and combustion data for the current operation. Various other operational data are tabulated and compared with similar data from other operating copper smelters.New heat balances are derived for various levels of combustion air preheat at the current smelting rate, and the effects of air preheat on oil consumption, combustion air and waste gas volumes are tabulated. These data are used to demonstrate the level of increased throughput which would be obtained before constraints in existing gas handling equipment are encountered.A similar exercise for oxygen enrichment is set out, with oil consumption, combustion air and waste gas volumes at various enrichment levels tabulated for the current smelting rate. Mining is big business in Ontario. The province is Canada?s leading mining region. It consistently ranks among the top 10 jurisdictions worldwide for exploration spending, reaching about C$1 billion in 2011. More than 26 percent of all exploration and appraisal dollars spent in Canada are invested in Ontario. Minerals produced include nickel, copper, platinum group elements (PGE), cobalt, zinc, diamonds, gold and silver. It was reported that there are more than 600 mining exploration projects in the province. And, recent discoveries of chromite in northern Ontario?s Ring of Fire will add to the province?s mineral production in the coming years.
