"An ore is a rock regardless of its rarity or value."* The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has some impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

Within the past few months I have had occasion to visit and examine the area of country in Gunnison county locally called the Gold Belt and extending from the Cebolla river on the west to the head of Taylor Park and the Sawatch range on the east. The region including the "belt" may be hided topographically into two parts, a northern and a southern one. The former is characterized by lofty mountains and deep canons, with occasional parks and wide valleys. Most of it is included in the granitic system of the Sawatch range, with local patches of the Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, more or less traversed by great bodies of porphyry and other eruptive rocks. The southern portion, on the other hand, is characterized by comparatively low, rounded hills of schist and sahistose gneisses, underlain by coarse, massive granite, which outcrops locally in small, and sometimes in large, patches. These hills also sometimes form table-lands by reason of overflows of lavas, such as andesitic breccia, rhyolite, trachyte and basalt. The leading geological feature is that of a schistose area of width and extent unusual for Colorado. These schists and gneisses are of pre-Cambrian age; but whether assignable to the Algonkian or to some older system has not been determined. The granite which occasionally outcrops from beneath these schists is, I think, of true eruptive character, since its mode of occurrence indicates a once molten, or at least highly viscous or plastic, condition. Thus, we may observe, included in its mass, numerous fragments of schist, almost like a coarse, volcanic breccia. Again, at its immediate contact with the schists, which often stand vertically upon it, the pediments of the latter are fused into the granite, and granite tongues and veins run up amongst the schists, as only a molten or viscous

The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the use of investigations and reports of all accidents.

"Recent improvements in X-ray computed tomography allow investigation of objects several tens of millimetres in dimension with spatial resolutions in the order of a few microns. These improvements are made possible by coupling the micro-focus technology adopted by some of the latest cone-beam X-ray sources with an increase in the efficiency of the detectors. The micro-focus technology allows the production of clearer images at high magnification by reducing the penumbra (fuzziness) associated with larger focal spot size.Even higher resolutions can be expected in the next few years with the commercialisation of nano-focus X-ray tubes. In practice one can inspect a system of fine composite particles and analyze the different mineralogical phases in each individual particle. Computed tomography allows accurate liberation studies, e.g. providing liberation spectra or washability data in tens of minutes. However, on-line application of micro-focus computed tomography is unlikely in the foreseeable future, despite rapid development.Dual-energy (DE) radiography is another X-ray technique, which allows retrieval of the volumetric content of valuable components in two-phase particles in a fraction of a second. A digital radiograph of a single two-phase particle produces a grey level image, where the luminosity of the pixels is determined by the sum of the attenuation levels of all the structures. Thus morphological and compositional effects concur to produce the radiographic image, which does not allow retrieval of the composition of the particle, as the 3D-structure of the particle is compressed into a 2D-image, with an obvious loss of information. Thus, in principle it is not possible to discriminate between thick, comparatively penetrable, and thin, comparatively impenetrable mineralogical components."

Synvolcanic, layered gabbro-anorthosite sills at Rainy Lake, Northwestern Ontario, reflect a combination of igneous processes including fractional crystallization, wall rock assimilation and possibly liquid immiscibility. Chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite mineralization at the base of the Grassy Portage intrusion accumulated by crystallization of a sulphide liquid during cooling. Upward enrichment of Fe and Ti in this intrusion and also in the Bad Vermilion Lake anorthosite complex culminated with the crystallization of lenses of disseminated to massive magnetite+ apatite+ ilmenite+ rutile. Regional low to medium grade metamorphism and accompanying deformation resulted in recrystallization and local remobilization of ore minerals.

"The Moose Mountain mine is located in a belt of Precambrian volcanic rocks situated 20 miles north of Sudbury, Ontario. It was the first iron mining operation in the Archean iron-formations of the Canadian Shield.The ore is believed to have been formed in an environment of active volcanism, being part of a pyroclastic and volcanic series where only the iron-formation and chert qualify as chemical sediments. The volcanic environment, subsequent regional tectonics and metamorphism produced orebodies which differ from the main sedimentary iron ranges of the world in such features as continuity, grade, structure and metallurgical characteristics. The orebodies occur as relatively small lenses which have been complexly folded, faulted and intruded by acidic and basic dykesAlthough the basic mining and beneficiation methods are simple, detailed geological control in exploration, planning and operation has been necessary to apply detailed selective techniques to the large-scale open-pit methods necessary in profitable iron mining.The milling and pelletizing processes are sensitive to minor variations in ore grade, grain size, fabric and mineralogy. Although detailed correlations of geological information and mill performance are still not entirely satisfactory, general working relationships have been determined with simple testing procedures. These are of in-creasing use in forecasting production and in ore-blending processes.The application of geology to mining and milling operations at Moose Mountain represents a departure from general practice in iron ore operations."

Under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey, and the United States Bureau of Standards, a study of the stone-quarrying industries of the country was begun in 1914. The results of investigations made have been published from time to time.1 During the World War the Bureau of Mines centered its attention on problems relating to national defense, and detailed studies of stone-quarry problems were not undertaken except for an investigation of labor saving at limestone quarries, reported in Technical Paper 203, which related to a question of military importance. Since the return of peace, the high cost of materials and labor has made more imperative than in prewar times the conduct of investigations for aiding the quarrying industries in every way possible to adopt more economical methods and to utilize the most efficient labor-saving equipment. The publications already issued have had a wide demand, and in the interest of the quarry industries the bureau proposes to issue additions to the series as rapidly as funds are available. In an endeavor to promote economy and the reduction of waste in the slate industry, a study of slate quarrying was begun in 1920 and covered a period of about two years. Sixty-five active quarries were visited, and a detailed study made of all problems bearing on their successful operation. Field study was supplemented by a study of all information available in books or published articles on slate quarrying.

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tons less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines,, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone 'allowed that accidents at class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons. Twenty-four deaths occurred at anthracite mines in November, 1970: the output of coal was 5,207,000 tons, hence the rate was 4.61 per million tons. During the corresponding month a year ago there were 48 deaths and 5,820,000 tons of coal produced, which indicated a death rate of 8.25. In October, 1930, the death rate was o.34; based on 48 deaths and 7,576,000 tons.

"The Mt. Milligan porphyry copper-gold deposits are in central British Columbia, 155 km northwest of Prince George. Mineralized outcrops and float were discovered in the Mount Milligan area by prospecting. The most recent discoveries, which utilized lithogeochemistry, were in 1983. Areas containing the outcrops and float then were investigated by geological mapping, soil and lithogeochemical sampling, ground and airborne geophysical surveys, trenching and diamond drilling. This work led to the discovery of the Mt. Milligan Main deposit in 1987 and the Southern Star deposit in 1989. Extensive diamond drilling continued until 1991 and delineated a measured and indicated resource of 299 million tonnes grading 0.45 g/t Au and 0.22 % Cu from the combined deposits.The Mt. Milligan deposits lie within the Early Mesozoic Quesnel Terrane and are hosted by porphyritic monzonite stocks and adjacent volcanic rocks of the Takla Group. The Mt. Milligan Main deposit is centred around the MBX stock and Rainbow dike, and the Southern Star deposit around the Southern Star stock.Potassic alteration is extensive within the stocks and in volcanic rocks adjacent to the MBX stock and Rainbow dike. Propylitic alteration surrounds the potassic alteration and decreases in intensuy away from the stocks. Mineralization consists mostly of pyrite, chalcopyrite, lesser magnetite, and minor bornite, molybdenite and gold.Mineralogical zoning is well-developed within the deposits. A biotite-rich subzone forms the core of the potassic alteration zone and hosts most of the copper and gold. Numerous polymetallic veins lie within the propylitic alteration zone just beyond the limit of porphyry-style copper-gold mineralization."

The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 PM, Pacific Daylight Time. It measured 7.1 in magnitude and was felt from Los Angeles north to the Oregon state line and east to western Nevada. The epicenter of the earthquake was located along the San Andreas Fault, in the Southern Santa Cruz Mountains just north of the City of Watsonville, California. It was the largest earthquake to occur in the San Francisco Bay area since the 1906 earthquake. A total of 87 aftershocks of Magnitude 3.0 or larger were recorded within 21 days after the seismic event. As a result of this earthquake thirteen State-owned and five locally-owned bridges were closed to traffic. Three of the most publicized State-owned structures closed to traffic were Struve Slough Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and Cypress Street Viaduct. Struve Slough Bridge was twin slab bridges that collapsed and were rebuilt and open to traffic three months after the earthquake. San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge experienced collapse of upper and lower spans at Pier 9 and was reopened to traffic one month after the earthquake. The Cypress Street Viaduct experienced collapse of 48 bents that resulted in the upper roadway falling onto the lower roadway.

COBALT is a silvery gray metal which closely resembles nickel in appearance and properties although it is somewhat harder and more brittle. It is rather widely disseminated and is estimated to make up about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust as compared to 0.020 percent for nickel. Cobalt, one of the four ferromagnetic elements, is used for many magnetic applications. It is oxidation resistant, a property which when coupled with its moderately high melting point of 1,495° C., makes it useful in high-temperature applications. Although cobalt had been used by man as a coloring agent for glass and other ceramic products for 4,000 years, it was not isolated as a metal until 1742 and not established as an element until some 40 years later. Early in the 20th century, cobalt began to be used in alloys, and soon these applications displaced ceramics as the major consumer of cobalt. The use of cobalt in alloys gave considerable stimulus to production, and the world output of cobalt increased rapidly, rising from 400 tons in 1920 to 1,400 tons in 1930 and 5,500 tons in 1940. With the advent of the jet plane in the mid 1940's and the consequent increased need for cobalt-bearing high-temperature alloys, cobalt production again increased, reaching 7,900 tons in 1950. The increased demand for cobalt during the Korean war coupled with a large demand for stockpiling caused world production to more than double within the next 10 years, reaching a peak of 17,300 tons in 1959.

"HistoryMining of the Schefferville iron deposits began in 1954 on completion of the 357 mile railway linking the mines and the St-Lawrence river port of Sept-Iles. Apart from crushing, no treatment of these ores was required before smelting. In the late 1950's, testwork began at schefferville to develop a process for upgrading the extensive lower grade deposits containing 51% iron with 15% silica (natural analysis). Engineering for a six million ton per year beneficiation plant using cationic silica flotation and the A-C grate kiln Began in 1970 and the first pellets were produced in mid-1973.Production requirements and operating difficulties have restricted capacity to approximately 85% of design but on going improvements are being made continuously to attain design capacity.GeologyThe sedimentary ore bodies of the labrador trough occur in a belt 5 to 10 miles wide and 60 miles long and contain 51 individual deposits varying in size from 1 and 60 million tons. The ores are classified into three main color groups."

A size-continuous breakage kinetics model is postulated and supported with industrial grinding mill data. It is shown that the kinetics parameters include the effects of possible classification at the mill discharge. The estimated parameters were then used in the kinetics model to simulate the behavior of a grinding mill in open and closed circuit operation. While material transport and kinetics are equally important in open loop operation, heavy recycle in a closed circuit make a detailed material transport model for grinding unnecessary. In effect, the mill can be considered as backmixed. This suggests that more emphasis should be placed on modeling the classifier than the development of detailed material transport models for the grinding mill.

The STATE MINERAL SUMMARIES publication provides estimated data and summaries of mineral activities at the State level for 1991. Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. Individual State summaries are published separately as State Mineral Industry Surveys and copies can be obtained from the appropriate State mineral officer or Bureau field office specified in each State summary.

On December 2013 a MEMU exploded at a blasting site in Norway, after burning for more than two hours. This paper describes the analyses made to determine the actual yield of the explosion, the lessons learned from the event and the actions taken as a consequence. The conclusions of the analysis were the following: - The yield of the explosion was 650-1450 kg TNT. In terms of AN and ANE they correspond to 1300 – 3700 kg AN, or 950 – 2450 kg ANE or ANE/AN blend. These quantities are 8 to 31 % of the explosive precursors in the truck. The burning of the truck and its load for two and a half hours had consumed more than two thirds (perhaps up to 90 %) of the explosive precursor material.

During .the past five decades or so we have passed from a time when it was difficult to point to a mine or an ore body and verify that it had been discovered by geological methods, through the. Twenties when the common saying was, "Who ever heard of a mine found by a geologist?", to recent decades when hundreds of mines and ore bodies are acknowledged geological discoveries and the above query can be ignored. Recently, however, the application of mining geology appears to have been downgraded, or so it seems to me. Basic geology in mining has been cheapened and glossed over in favor of geophysics and outcrop sampling, even though the latter is merely one technique of mining geology and, to some extent anyhow, has been used for a. long time. (Locke, 3, pp 81-87). Geophysics by itself and in conjunction with geology has had success in certain geological provinces, but limited attainment in mountainous terrane except in those few cases where strongly magnetic minerals are associated with ore. Nevertheless, in the Cordillera .many experimental techniques are offered as proved ones. This is not an intent to try to depreciate honest geo- physics. Continued experimentation and use of it is approved by all, but at the same time it is foolhardy to throw mining geology overboard, Generally both approaches should be considered and usually, at first anyhow, geology is the most direct one.

This investigation involved a study of the reactions occurring during aging of supersaturated a phase in a CIL-Si alloy. The aging processes at temperatures below 552°C were studied by means of metallography, microhardness, and electrical resistivity measurements. During the initial stage of aging in the temperature range 275o to 525oC an anisotropic phase, which is visible in the form of striations in the micro-structure formed prior to the appearance of the -phase. This transition phase has been designated k' due to its structural similarity to the k phase. The rate of K' formation during aging increased with aging temperature. At 450o and 525°C the reaction appeared to reach completion before significant amounts of precipitation were observed. The overall precipitation reaction in this system involved four stages: formation of formation of at a grain boundaries, growth of particles in 7-egions, and coagulation of into large particles. The relative role of each of these processes is dependent on the temperature of aging. The formation of phase from supersaturated a during aging increases the electrical resistivity and slightly increases the hardness of a 4.9 pct silicon alloy. The formation of during aging decreases the electrical resistivity and increases the hardness until coalescence of particles begins during the final stages of aging. The coalescence of results in a decrease of both electvical resistivity and hardness. THE available literature does not record a detailed analysis of the aging processes in Cu-Si alloys. Such an analysis has been difficult due to both the limited data available and misleading microstructural observations which have been reported. Previous work suggests that a rather complicated series of processes may be involved in the aging of supersaturated a. The present investigation is concerned with an analysis of the sequence of these aging processes in a 4.9 pct Si alloy. The currently accepted version of the Cu-Si equilibrium diagram, Fig. 1, was published by C. S. Smith in 1940.' This diagram shows a eutectoid at 5.2 pct Si with the high temperature phase, having its composition range entirely to the right of this value. By quenching alloys in the composition range 4.6 to 5.2 pct Si from the region, Smith was able to retain the phase. However, this phase exhibited a striated microstructure which was anisotropic to polarized light. These striations were suggested by Smith to be duplex twins. Using an oscillating crystal X-ray method Barrett2 studied alloys containing 4.0 to 5.4 pct Si quenched from the and regions. The striations observed in quenched specimens were attributed by Barrett to quenching stresses. He found that striations could also be formed by deformation after quenching and identified them as stacking faults in alloys containing 4.0 to 5.0 pct Si. Barrett related the striations in alloys containing 5.0 to 5.4 pct Si both to stacking faults and to a metastable phase which he called The striated structure reported by smith' was also obtained by Hoffmann, et al. 3 By deeply etching their specimens the anisotropic phase on the surface was removed, leaving a structure which was microscopically similar to pure copper. By means of X-ray analysis before and after deformation at room temperature it was concluded that the anisotropic phase was metastable This conclusion has been questioned by Barrett who attributes the discrepancy to superposition of k and lines on the powder patterns of Hoffmann, et alm3 The decomposition of supersaturated according to smith' and Anderson,4 is very sluggish. Large-diameter drilled shafts (DS) are a critical part of a seismic-resistant system, and therefore it is important to be able to accurately model lateral resistance. To undertake the lateral load analysis of largediameter DS, a finite-difference p-y analysis program, NVShaft, is being developed at the University of Nevada Reno. Validation of the new program involved numerous p-y analyses using commercially available programs. Subsequent comparisons suggested the program's ability to yield reasonable predictions for typical diameter DS. Based on the I-15/US 95 load test program carried out in Las Vegas, NV, this study presents the evaluation of NVShaft in Nevada’s subsurface condition. Lateral load analyses of a 2 ft and an 8 ft diameter DS were attempted using NVShaft. The location of the applied lateral loads and the presence of cemented soil-layers were incorporated in the modeling. A good agreement between NVShaft prediction and the measured response was found for the 2 ft diameter DS. For the 8 ft diameter DS, a stiffer response was predicted. The inspections of the moment-curvature characteristics at different load levels suggested cracked response of the concrete due to prior axial load testing may be one of the reasons behind the deviation.

THE adiabatic elastic deformation of a body is accompanied by a change in temperature. This phenomenon is known as the thermoelastic effect. Under adiabatic conditions the temperature of a metal bar is decreased by an elastic elongation and is increased by an elastic compression. All materials which elongate on heating behave in this manner. The sign of the thermoelastic temperature change is reversed for the few materials which have a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. The following equation for the thermoelastic effect can be derived from fundamental thermody-namic theorems, as shown in the Appendix: dT8 =-a1/cs T dss [1] Cs In this equation, T is the absolute temperature, S is the entropy, a, is the coefficient of linear thermal expansion, cs' is the heat capacity per unit volume at constant stress and s is the stress (positive in tension). Eq 1 can be applied to small, but finite changes in stress in the following form: ?Ts =- a1/cs T?ss [2] The sign of the temperature change AT is opposite to that of the change in stress s for materials which have a positive coefficient of thermal expansion. Eq 2 has been verified for many different materials and stresses at room temperature. No previous publication appears to have been devoted to an in- vestigation of the thermoelastic effect over a range of temperatures. Review of Literature Lord Kelvin (W. Thomson) presented a general theory of the thermoelastic effect in 1851' and later applied it to a solid, subject to an arbitrary system of stresses'. His analysis was based on a cycle of isothermal and constant-strain transformations and led to Eq 2 above. Even today, one of the clearest expositions of the thermoelastic effect is found in Lord Kelvin's article on elasticity in the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (1878). R.
