Microwave pretreatment is one of the emerging technologies which have been reported as having potential economic benefits for the processing of amenable ores. The application of microwave pretreatment to the processing of refractory and finely disseminated ores is of great interest as the technology can potentially reduce high comminution costs and improve mineral liberation. Sized ore samples were subjected to microwave irradiation at power levels varying from 1 to 5 kW over exposure times of between 1 and 6minutes in order to determine the influence of heating rate on mineral transformation, ground product size distribution and mineral liberation. The microwave irradiated samples were ground and subsequently floated. A comparison is made with non-microwave treated samples. Flotation grade and recovery show a strong dependence on the microwave absorption characteristics of the mineral components of the ore, in the following decreasing order -sphalerite, galena, and lastly chalcopyrite.

Understanding the effects of the bench on ground motion can improve the design of cast blasts and achieve improved blast efficiency while remaining below vibration requirements. A new dataset recorded in September 2003 from a coal mine in Arizona has allowed us to examine the excitation of short-period Rayleigh-type surface waves from four simultaneously-detonated explosions in and below a topographic bench of a mine. The explosions were recorded on a network of over 150 seismic sensors, providing an extensive understanding of the ground motion radiation patterns from these explosions. We detonated two separate explosions (~3 tons and ~1.5 tons ANFO) in the deepest pit of the mine, thus the explosions were shot to solid rock. Within 25 meters of these two explosions, we detonated two additional explosions of similar explosive yields in a bench, thus these explosions were shot to the free face. Radiation patterns and spectral ratios from the explosions show increased amplitudes (by a factor of 1.5 to 2) at azimuths behind the bench relative to the amplitudes in front of the bench. We compared these findings to seismic observations from two ~1.5 million pound cast blasts at the same mine and found similar radiation patterns. Modeling of these blasts shows that the variations in ground motion are caused by the topographic bench as a result of 1) horizontal spalling of the rock falling into the pit and 2) non- linear scattering near the free- face. We also note that shooting to a buffer (previously blasted rock) causes the azimuthal variations to be significantly reduced.

The major proportion of South African coal is extracted by the bord-and-pillar mining method which requires that the overlying strata be supported by pillars of coal. The stability of the pillars is a major safety concern. One of the factors which affects the strength of coal pillars is the intensity and nature of discontinuities in the coal seams. Current design methods for pillars assume that al the coal seams have equal strength and are equally disturbed by natural discontinuities, resulting in over-designed pillars in some cases and potentially unstable pillars in others. Research was carried out to determine the nature of discontinuities in coal seams and to assess their potential effect on pillar strength. It was found that large variations exist in the intensity of discontinuities in the different coal seams being mined. In addition, numerical model studies showed that the discontinuities could significantly reduce pillar strength if the width-to-height ratio of the pillars is small, but the effect decreases as the width-to-height ratio increases.

The year 1941 in the California oil industry was marked by an increased market demand, drilling activity, and production of crude oil. Although seven new oil fields and two gas fields were discovered during the year, additions to reserves from these discoveries, as well as extensions and revaluations of previous discoveries, were approximately 100 million barrels, as against estimated withdrawals of 230,233,000 barrels. The year was remarkable for the very great increase in domestic demand for all products, which more than compensated for the loss in shipments to Japan, which averaged 60,041 bbl. Per day during 1940. Demand in terms of crude during 1941 was 648,967 bbl. per day as against 632,647 for the same period in 1940. This abnormal increase in demand is due to increased industrial activity, and especially increased railroad activity. Gasoline consumption for 1941 was 241,011 bbl. per day as against 217,744 in 1940. Demand for fuel oil increased from 259,806 bbl. per day in 1940 to 285,896 in 1941, and caused a withdrawal from stocks of more than 7,473,000 barrels. During 1941, total oil storage declined 9,153,000 bbl., but additions to storage of 1,754,000 bbl. of light oil and light oil products were offset by a withdrawal of 10,907,000 bbl. of heavier products. Production during the year is estimated at 230,233,000 bbl. as against 222,784,386 bbl. for 1940. TraNsportation For a short time, California was affected by lack of transportation due to the diversion of tankers. This shortage affected the movement of oil from the Sari Joaquin mated to the refineries, since a large percentage of this production is moved to the coast through pipe lines, and thence by tankers to Los Angeles and San Fran-,iSco, Return of the tanker fleet, which may be temporary, indicates that there is a possibility of ample supplies of petroleum products in the Pacific Northwest. Drilling Activity Contrary to general opinion, drilling activity increased in 1941 over the pre-vious Year, 942 wells being completed in 1941 as against 890 in 1940, an increase Of 6 per cent. This increase was due to the increased demands for fuel oil, and also to the decreased drilling costs, which made many former marginal locations economic. The main activity caused by increased demands for fuel oil was in the Mt. Poso, McKittrick, Midway and Santa Maria Valley oil fields. Dry-hole footage in 1941 was 655,354 ft. as against 583,537 ft. for 1940. "The comprehensive assessment of the environmental impacts of mining rare earth element (REE) deposits depends on a sound knowledge of the mobility of REEs in low-temperature aqueous environments. Temperature, pH and water chemistry are important factors controlling the aqueous mobility of REEs, while REEs are known to readily form complexes with both inorganic and organic ligands, and it has been shown that sorption and colloid formation may play an important part in dictating REE transport in the low temperature weathering environment. Ore and host rock mineralogy is also a key factor controlling the extent to which REEs are leached from mine waste. INTRODUCTIONThe aqueous mobility of rare earth elements (REEs) has commonly been explored in the past due to their potential application as tracers of geochemical processes in aqueous systems. REE mobility in low-temperature solutions has been shown to be dependent on the pH, temperature, ionic strength, and solution chemistry. For example, the aqueous transport of REEs can be modified by complexation with organic and inorganic ligands (Johannesson & Zhou, 1999; Klungness & Byrne, 2000; Luo & Byrne, 2004; Schijf & Byrne, 2004; Tang & Johannesson, 2010; Wood, 1990, 1993), or through sorption to suspended particles and colloids (Bau, 1999; Quinn, Byrne, & Schijf, 2004, 2006a, 2006b, 2007; Sholkovitz, 1995). Here we review the coordination chemistry, sorption behaviour and potential colloid association of REEs with respect to low temperature aquatic settings.RARE EARTH ELEMENT CHEMISTRYREEs include lanthanum to lutetium of Group IIIA in the periodic table. All share very similar chemical and physical properties. Often included in REE studies is another Group IIIA element, yttrium owing to its similar properties, and occasionally scandium, although its considerably smaller ionic radius makes for different properties and will not be discussed further here. The REEs are often subdivided into the light REEs (LREE), La to Sm, and the heavy REEs (HREE), Eu to Lu, which also usually include Y (hence are often referred to as YREE). The REE may be subdivided further into the LREEs, middle REEs (MREEs), and HREEs, in which case each classification includes La-Nd, Pm to Ho, and Er to Lu as well as Y, respectively, although definitions vary throughout the literature."

This paper reports on an experimental study of the effect that bottom shaping might have on the impulse delivered to a light armored vehicle due to a buried mine detonating beneath the center of it. The study was restricted to explosives buried in saturated sand and three parameters were varied within the study: bottom angle (0 degrees to 21 degrees), depth of burial of the explosive (1.02 mm to 12.7 mm), and stand off distance (0 mm to 38.1 mm). Six hundred and thirty six milligrams of explosive was used as the explosive load. It has been shown in previously published work [1,2] that Hopkinson scaling works well for the determination of impulse loading on a semi-rigid target plates. Therefore in terms of a full scale test using 4.54 Kilograms of explosive the parameters investigated would cover a DOB of from 19.56 mm to 243.84 mm and a Stand off distance from 0 to 734.06 millimeters. These values nicely cover those of interest to the Marines with regard to the AAV (amphibious assault vehicle). Four angles were investigated at all DOB’s and Stand off distances – 0 degrees, 7 degrees, 13 degrees, and 20 degrees. The results show that reduction in impulse delivered to the target is achieved with an angled bottom on the target plate with a major reduction occurring before the 13 degree angle is reached. Hence vehicles with quite modest bottom angles could help greatly in load reduction with very little loss in utility.

California had a record year in production and drilling activity, but the results have not been sufficient to keep up with the enormous increase in demand due to war activity. During the year, 164 dry wildcats were drilled, 80 dry wells in proved areas, 31 gas wells, and 1158 successful oil-well completions for a total of 1433 wells, compared with a total of 765 in 1942. With new discoveries of only 20,000,000 and production of 283,000,000 bbl. for the year, total reserves of California oil have decreased more than 250,000,000 bbl. However, revised estimates of the reserves of old fields indicate an increase in the state's reserves of I00,000,000 barrels. The completion of 1158 wells has served only to maintain the maximum efficient daily rate of production at 800,000 barrels. There is evidence in many fields that oil is being withdrawn too rapidly to obtain the maximum recovery, and more rapidly than is conducive to good production practice. Statistics for 1943 as compared with I942 are shown in the table in the next column, Supply and Demand Steadily mounting needs of the military forces and increased industrial consumption raised total demand for all petroleum products on the Pacific Coast to 914,000 bbl. daily in 1943. That all-time record demand was 149,ooo bbl. daily higher than in 1942 and 214,000 bbl. daily above 1941 demand. Despite restrictions due to shortages of critical material, crude-oil production was boosted from 680,000 bbl. daily in 1942 to 779,000 bbl. daily in 1943, the highest level in 15 years. However, the new crude supply plus natural gasoline production and imports from other states totaled only 840,000 bbl. daily, leaving a deficiency between supply and demand of 74,000 bbl. daily. That shortage had to be made up by withdrawals from inventories, which had been steadily depleted during the previous four years. Aboveground reserves, which totaled 159,574,000 bbl. on Jan. I, 1939, were down to ~8.000,000, bbl. at the end of 1943. Significantly enough, the greater part of that decrease occurred during the last six months of I9437 when more than 23,000,000 bbl. was taken from inventories of both crude and products. Although the size of total inventories on Dec. 31, 1943 might appear substantial, about 65 per

The marine mineral resources of the U.S. middle and south Atlantic shelf are little utilized. The largest resource, sand and gravel, is used for beach nourishment and protection and, to a much lesser degree, as construction aggregate. The potential for increased utilization is great. Submarine deposits of shell have been mined for lime and for use in the oyster industry. Although significant quantities of manganese nodules and crusts are present on the Blake Plateau, exploitation in the foreseeable future is unlikely. Similarly, major phosphorite deposits in North Carolina's inner shelf probably will remain unexploited as long as onshore deposits remain available. Placer deposits of heavy-mineral sands, especially the titanium minerals, offer the possibility of exploitation. This possibility might be enhanced by consideration of joint development of sand or aggregate with heavy minerals.

The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

The complex responsible for the poisoning of anion-exchange resins is identified as the anionic cobaltic penta¬cyanide mono aquo species. It is shown that, at high concentration, this species polymerizes in solutions of pH less than 9. A mechanism for poisoning is presented that involves adsorption of anionic cobalt cyanide by a normal ion-exchange process, followed by polymerization within the resin matrix to form complexes that are too large to diffuse readily through the resin pores. The effects of resin structure and functionality on the extent of cobalt poisoning are examined, and the effect of cobalt poisoning on the kinetics and equilibrium loading of uranium is discussed.

Quartz and feldspar cannot be floated with sulfonate at any pH; spodumene floats over a narrow acid pH range, while beryl responds moderately over a broad pH range. After wet-grinding in a steel mill, beryl, quartz, and spodumene float well with sulfonate below about pH 7, whereas the improvement in the response of feldspar is not so marked. A mechanism by which iron can be adsorbed on these minerals is presented. Also, the responses of leached, natural, and wet-ground beryl to amine, sulfonate, and oleate flotation are shown and related to the measured zero-points-of-charge of these materials. Earlier work with leached beryl showed that good flotation could be obtained with alkyl aryl sulfonate over a rather wide pH range using a Fagergren flotation cell.' When a similar response was observed with leached quartz, it was decided that unintentional activation was being obtained from the metallic components of the Fagergren cell. To obviate this difficulty, a microflotation cell was designed, and an experimental technique was devised. These have been described elsewhere. Experiments conducted with the small cell showed that leached quartz could not be floated at any pH with any sulfonate addition,3 which is in agreement with the observations of Kraeber and Boppel.4 Similarly, it was also found that leached beryl responded to sulfonate flotation only over a narrow pH range rather than the broad range reported earlier.1 This early work,1 however, revealed the important effect that wet-grinding in a steel mill has on the flotation response of certain silicates. That is, it was found that quartz and especially beryl floated well over an unusually wide pH range after wet-grinding in a steel mill. Microcline, however, floated poorly below pH 4, even though wet-ground under the same conditions. The work of Eigeles6 on adsorption of oleic acid on leached quartz and iron-contaminated quartz at constant pH is in agreement with these flotation data. Other research has shown that ferric iron, added as a salt to the system, functions as an activator in the narrow pH range in which Fe +++ iron hydrolyzes to its hydroxy complexes.3,5 These phenomena indicate that iron functions differently in flotation systems depending on its method of introduction. The object of this paper is to determine the mechanism by which iron is adsorbed on certain minerals, the mechanism of collector adsorption after iron abstraction, and the role that Fe++ and Fe+++ assume in the selective separation of these minerals. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate, mol wt 450,7 pure potassium oleate, and pure dodecylamine were used as collectors. All other chemicals were reagent grade in quality, i.e., n-amyl alcohol as frother; HC1, H2SO4, and KOH for pH adjustment; and ferric chloride as activator. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in the experimental work. All minerals used in the investigation were hand-picked specimens. Sample Preparation: Each of the minerals was crushed through 8 mesh, and the product was divided into two groups, one to be ground dry and the other wet. Dry grinding was accomplished with an alumina mortar and pestle. The product was dry-screened to 48 x 150 mesh, cleaned magnetically, deslimed in conductivity water, and dried. Preparation of the samples by wet-grinding involved grinding a 200-g charge of the mineral (-8 mesh) at 60% solids with natural water in a mild steel rod mill for four minutes. This charge was then wet-screened immediately with natural water to 48 x 150 mesh, dried, and cleaned magnetically. Some experiments were also conducted with leached beryl and quartz. These products were prepared by leaching the sized sample (48 x 150 mesh) with concentrated HC1 with a percolation technique until no iron could be detected in the leach liquor. Social licence to operate is developed and kept through managing both operational impacts and the relationship between local community and company. However, CSIRO research has demonstrated that in determining how accepting community members are of a mining operation, relational factors, such as procedural fairness and trust, are much more important than operational impacts, such as impacts on employment and the environment (Moffat and Zhang, 2015). Companies seek to develop relational factors through their engagement with local community; such engagement has many aspects, including, initially identifying stakeholders and positioning the company as part of the local community (Lacey et al, in prep; Thomson and Boutlier, 2011). These relational factors involve the social identities of people living in the community. Social identities are a part of people that shape their beliefs, based on their connections with various groups in their lives (Hogg et al, 2004).An engagement process, intentionally or not, inevitably interacts with the social identities of stakeholders (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). For example, traditionally, at the very beginning of engagement processes, community members are assigned to categories using conventional stakeholder mapping and categorisation methods, often based on assumptions about stakeholders’ interests, which equates to assumptions about stakeholders’ social identities (Colvin, Witt and Lacey, 2016; International Council on Mining and Metals, 2012). Yet, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether such categories reflect the social identities of stakeholders and if there is a bearing on relational factors, including, the perceived fairness of consultations and trust in mining companies (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). Also at this time, companies commonly seek to create a presence in communities, for example, joining Chambers of Commerce and participating alongside community members. Again, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether community members and companies identifying with the same overarching group and thus sharing aspects of social identity, influences relational factors (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). In this study, we examined the effects of changing aspects of social identity by changing how stakeholders were identified and companies were positioned, on how stakeholders’ perceived a new mining operation, specifically how they perceived the procedural fairness of the proposed consultation process and trusted the company, two factors that underlie a company’s social licence to operate.CITATION:Carr-Cornish, S and Moffat, K, 2016. "In recent years, the mining industry has been inundated with new technologies and software systems to aid in productivity improvement. Accompanying this increased level of technology and computer systems has been the exponential growth in data sources and sinks for all aspects of a mining operation. This rapid growth in data and technology has evolved through vendor “push” approaches and user “pull” scenarios, the result of which has been that currently, no standards exist defining how data from new technology should be accessed and transferred from surface mining equipment and systems. Consequently, many incremental benefits of the systems have not been realized. This paper will present a discussion of this important issue and introduce a new committee formed to address standards to assist the industry in making effective use of current and future technology. Potential benefits accruing from the development of these standards will be illustrated through the use of a case study at Fording Coal Limited. IntroductionThe mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in the computing-based systems capabilities of mobile production equipment. At the same time, there is a trend toward the introduction of even larger machines, with novel designs or incorporation of new technologies within existing designs. Computing and control technology will be required to operate and acquire knowledge about equipment operation, utilization, and performance. Such knowledge has the potential to lead to enhanced equipment design, more appropriate equipment selection, and optimized equipment performance. The equipment systems will be required to be integrated with mine production monitoring systems, maintenance management software, and a wealth of other information systems to provide a complete understanding of the effects of various factors such as maintenance, equipment design and production on economics (Roman and Daneshmend, 2001). This will lead to a better understanding and implementation of the opportunities to enhance the performance of the mine through interaction of the mine operations."

Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

Poly[(ethylene)-co-(vinylacetate)] (EVA) is a thermoplastic copolymer composed of randomly distributed polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate sequences within the molecular chain. EVA combines toughness with excellent flexibility, impact and puncture resistance. Because of these properties, this material is largely used for foam production as padding in equipment for various sports and as a shock absorber in sport’s shoes. This work aims to study the influence of clay reinforcement on the performance of recycled polymer foams. The blend containing recycled HDPE (high density polyethylene) and recycled EVA (70/30 wt%, respectively) reinforced with 2 wt%of clays were prepared by melt extrusion, using a twin-screw extruder to obtain the composites. The composites and foaming agent were fed into a special single screw extruder for foaming. The samples of HDPE/ EVA/Clay foams were characterized by tensile test, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), density measurement and the correlation between the results was evaluated.

AMONG the newer lead smelting and refining plants of the country is that of the United States Metals Refining Co., at Carteret, N. J. Not only is the technical practice here modern and efficient, but exceptional care is taken to assure healthful operating conditions for the employees. One large building houses the entire department, which includes, as its chief units, one reverberatory smelting furnace, one blast furnace, two softening furnaces, one utility reverberatory furnace, two Faber du Faur retorts, five 120-ton kettles, three 60-ton antimouial lead kettles, and one 5-ton kettle for experimental purposes. There is a 10-ton overhead crane in the kettle aisle, which is also used for shipping lead. Other auxiliary equipment is referred to in the outline of operations. "A major program of pillar recovery at the Sullivan mine has been assisted for the past several years by a concerted series of rock mechanics investigations. The object of these investigations is to measure the parameters of rock behaviour which influence pillar mining. This quantitative information is then used in the design of mining methods appropriate for various conditions.Instrumentation to measure absolute rock stress, changes in rock stress and the gross deformation of rock masses has been developed. Various instruments are described, as are instrument evaluation procedures and typical test results. The data from underground measurement projects have been used to modify pillar extraction sequences along re-treat fronts. Rock mechanics information from individual pillars has been incorporated into the design of mining methods to suit particular circumstances."
