ONE of the major purposes of the Institute is to "maintain ... a library of books relating to subjects cognate to the sciences and arts of mining and metallurgy." In conformance with this purpose the Institute maintained its own library for a number of years until 1912 when it was merged with the libraries of the other Founder Societies. At that time the A.I.M.E.'s share of operating expenses was wholly covered by the income from a $100,000 gift from James Douglas. But interest on the Douglas Library Fund has declined from 51/2 per cent to 31/4 per cent; the library has grown from some 50,000 volumes in 1913 to more than 170,000 in 1945, with consequently increased costs; and its costs nave otherwise risen. The Institute today contributes to the library annually about 65c per member, of which about 25c is income from the Douglas Fund, or a net charge, from regular income, of 40c per member. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) BELIEVING that the results accomplished in the mill of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev., during the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1914, will be of interest, I am presenting the more prominent facts and figures showing the progress made in treating this ore with especial reference to tonnage, supplies, costs, and extractions. The mill is situated at Wonder, Nev., in the Wonder mining district, 55 miles east from Fallon, Nev., the nearest railroad point. All supplies are hauled this distance by freight teams, this method of transportation having been found more reliable for continuous service than trucks, the price paid for hauling being slightly under one cent per pound. The SCRREEN project gathers more than 50 European initiatives, associations, organisations or independent experts working on Critical Raw Materials (CRM) into a long-lasting network including stakeholders, public authorities, and civil society representatives. SCRREEN contributes to improve the CRM strategy in Europe by (i) mapping primary and secondary resources and substitutes of CRMs, (ii) estimating the expected demand of various CRMs in the future and identifying major trends, (iii) providing policy and technology recommendations for actions improving the production and the potential substitution of CRM, (iv) addressing specific waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and other End-of-Life (EoL) product issues related to their mapping and treatment standardization, and (vi) identifying the knowledge gathered over previous years and making the data accessible to those beyond the project. As a first step, SCRREEN worked at providing stakeholders with a comprehensive analysis of the current use of the CRM, the mapping of potential primary and secondary resources, and identification of the key technologies used in their production. Substitution profiles, analysis of European business and policy issues pertinent to CRMs, and an identification of the standards, policies, and regulatory frameworks concerning these CRM was also completed. In a second step, to be conducted between mid-2018 and mid-2019, SCRREEN will provide guidance for improving the CRM market in Europe by identifying opportunities from research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) that could reduce the supply and/or economic risks around the most relevant CRM for Europe.

"Abstract - The coalbed methane industry has become a prominent source of domestic natural gas, with its technology having evolved over the past 30 years. Whereas most coalbed methane wells are able to produce without major interruption over their economic lives, wells operating in an underground mining area are subject to being mined-through. If mine-through occurs, the productivity of the well is at least compromised, and may even be terminated. The economic consequences of mine-through may be relatively simple if mineral ownership and extraction rights are common for the coal and coalbed methane. However, if ownership is not common and a superior coalbed methane lease exists, the coalbed methane ownership must be compensated for lost production caused by mine-through. This paper presents a relatively straightforward method to calculate the value of the lost production caused by the mine-through. It uses technology from mining and petroleum engineering, as well as simple economics and financial management techniques.Sommaire - L’industrie de la production de méthane houiller est aujourd’hui une source importante de gaz naturel domestique dont la technologie a considérablement évolué au cours des trente dernières années. Bien que la plupart des puits de méthane houiller peuvent être mis en production durant l’entièreté de leur vie utile sans interruption majeure, les puits implantés en périphérie de mines souterraines sont sujets à être recoupés par ces dernières. Un tel recoupement peut compromettre, ou même mettre fin à la production d'un tel puits. Les conséquences économiques du recoupement par une mine souterraine peuvent être relativement simples quand les droits miniers et les droits d’extraction sont détenus en commun pour le charbon et le méthane houiller. Si toutefois ces droits ne sont pas détenus en commun et qu’il y a eu octroi d’une concession de méthane houiller de qualité supérieure, les détenteurs du méthane houiller doivent être compensés pour la perte de production résultant du recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cet article présente une méthode relativement simple pour calculer la valeur des pertes de production suite au recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cette méthode fait appel aux technologies de l’industrie minière et pétrolière ainsi qu’à des techniques simples d’économie et de gestion financière."

Underground mining of copper ore in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper District basin generates a number of seismic events, whose energy often exceeds 108 J (Butra, 2010). The number of tremors and their location shows that the area of rock mass involved in the deformation and failure processes significantly exceeds the area of mining operations. Locations of seismic foci of high energy tremors, as well as the aftershocks that accompany them, extend hundreds of metres, confirming that processes to restore the energy balance of rock mass occur in a short amount of time and over a wide area. Thus, an area of similar size should be considered in predictive analyses of the tremor?s position. It should be emphasized that a large portion of the rock mass still has a level of freedom resulting from the way the rock mass is held together and its geometric continuity. This level of freedom is dependent on the scale and duration of mining, the number and size of natural structures, and rock mass pressure, including gravitational pressure constricting individual fragments of rock mass in the area (Burtan, 2012). It can therefore be assumed that in real conditions, areas where mechanical strength of the layers has been exceeded may be located a considerable distance from each other and do not necessarily need to coincide with the working area location. In this sense, a rock mass influenced by mining exploitation is essentially a rock mass in which numerous fragments with concentrated energy exist simultaneously. Energy will be released within these rock mass areas each time rock mass strengths are exceeded by the induced stress changes related to mining operations. This paper presents a discussion on how to predict the location of seismic activity areas based on a change of position of seismic energy equivalents. This parameter is calculated for a given set of seismic tremors with defined foci coordinates. For a given set of seismic tremors, the location of seismic energy equivalents may be used for predicting the location of high-energy seismic events.

In 1972, a cooperative program to map and estimate the quantity of Tertiary coal resources in southern Saskatchewan was initiated by the federal and Saskatchewan governments. More than 700 exploratory boreholes were drilled over a two-year period, and data were obtained from other organization s on an additional 1500 boreholes in the area. Stratigraphic data and data on each coal seam penetrated in the boreholes, along with technical and location data for each borehole, were stored in a computer data base for convenience of retrieval, modification and manipulation. Programs and program packages were developed or adapted to: (1) select borehole information defined by variable retrieval parameters from the data base; (2) calculate derived information , such as overburden ratios. cumulative net coal thicknesses , mean weighted center of gravity of coal seams in each borehole, etc., from the selected data ; (3) produce posting maps of either selected data or calculated information in various combinations at variable scales on a plotter or CRT display; (4) produce contoured structure, isopach or ratio maps , and perspective diagrams as appropriate , utilizing plotter or CRT display; (5) calculate and categorize quantities of coal in place within user- defined "mineability-economic-reliability" limits. The emphasis in computer utilization was placed on geological credibility of the results and ease of operation by relatively untrained geological personnel, resulting in extensive use of interactive methods. The single most important benefit derived from using computer-assisted procedures is the ability to produce new maps and quantity estimates rapidly and inexpensively as a result of availability of new data or/and changes in external criteria which impose economic or mineability constraints.

Real-time operational excellence is achieved through the seamless integration of various components. Key aspects include precise instrumentation, real-time data collection, data analytics, and an efficient optimization platform. Additionally, to ensure success, the real-time optimization platform must be incorporated into the site’s internal process control system (Nunez, 2022). This paper provides an overview of practical lessons and best practices for autogenous (AG), semi-autogenous (SAG), and ball mill (BM) grinding. It highlights the implementation of advanced instrumentation, specifically vibration sensors on the rotating mill shell. The paper also delves into the application of advanced analytics necessary for generating new measurements that accurately represent real-time grinding activity in the mill. These Advanced Analytics Measurements (AAM) are compared with well-known grinding curves to determine the optimal grinding point. The discussion focuses on key industry opportunities using real-time mill shell vibration results to derive new correlations and optimize the grinding process.

The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future. As regulations on the transport, exposure, disposition and emission of arsenic have become more stringent; it has become increasingly more difficult to derive the values from these resources. This paper will outline the fundamentals of alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy and its successful application to arsenic bearing ores, concentrates and materials.

Hatch Ltd. has recently completed a project to increase refractory gold ore processing capacity at Newmont Mining Corporation’s Twin Creeks facility. The objective of the project was to increase throughput by approximately 10% by adding a third autoclave feed pump to each of the two autoclave circuits. To minimize project capital cost, autoclave feed pumps from Newmont’s decommissioned Lone Tree facility were evaluated and found to be suitable for this new service. The existing pressure oxidation circuit was reviewed in a debottlenecking study to determine other upgrades required to facilitate the increased throughput. Interruption to operations was minimized with a detailed construction plan, supplemented with detailed 3D layout model sequencing studies. The focus of this paper is project development, multi-discipline design considerations, and implementation results.

"The complete and successful closure of a mine in the South African environment remains problematic. Closure remains an elusive mining phase due to unclear roles and responsibilities, inaccurate closure management data, and the inability of stakeholders to conceptualize and integrate closure information into business processes. Currently there are no proven methods available to address the complexities encountered during a closure application, and to date no mine has been granted full closure. Many mines are left abandoned and unrehabilitated, resulting in risk to investors, surrounding communities, and regulators. This investigation aimed to determine, categorize, and rank reasons for unsuccessful mine closures. Focus groups consisting of public and private stakeholders were identified and surveyed through a structured, rank-order questionnaire to determine the relative importance of reasons why achieving formal and final mine closure remains elusive. Various requirements and aspects were identified and listed according to four categories: namely, primary, secondary, process drivers, and information sources. These aspects should be considered in the development of an integrated mine closure model.Background and rationalePrior to 1956, mine closures were not subject to legislative requirements, being merely governed by insufficient environmental regulations under the Mines and Works Act 27 (MWA) (Swart, 2003). In 1981 the Chamber of Mines (COM) published a document titled ‘The rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface coal mining’, which constituted the first notable contribution to environmental protection. This guideline was later referenced in the Minerals Act of 1991, which for the first time laid definite environmental burdens on the Mining Right Holder (MRH). The Minerals Act of 1991 was superseded by the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act Regulations (MPRDAR), which specify a regulatory process for mine closure applications and financial provisions."

As marine research scientists we especially appreciate the uniqueness and complexity of the deep-sea hydrothermal vent fauna and environments, and are particularly interested in preserving vents for their scientific, aesthetic, ecological, and potential economic values. In fact, because of the specialized nature of the equipment required to work at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, such as occupied and unoccupied research submersibles, scientists are the primary group of people who have the opportunity to visit these extraordinary environments. The potential for significant impact of scientific activities on a single vent site or a population of vent animals pales in comparison to the potential for disturbance by volcanic/tectonic events or industrial mining/harvesting activities. Nonetheless, we recognize that some scientific activities could adversely affect individual sites or impact communities more than is necessary, if research activities are not carefully planned and executed. In addition, because only a limited number of sites are currently known and scientists from a wide variety of disciplines frequently work at single locations, we recognize the potential for use conflicts among scientists, at sites where scientific activity is intense.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for a highly mechanized P.T.Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a copper-gold deposit being developed underneath the current Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) mine. One of company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady oreflow of 25,000 tpd by year 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) adopted its Clean Water Plan (CWP) in May 2020, as part of a federal consent decree to comply with the USEPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy. Planned improvements include constructing a new regional storage/conveyance tunnel system, promoting green infrastructure/ source control, and expanding the treatment plant. Preliminary planning for the tunnel system was completed in October 2020. The Ohio River Tunnel (ORT) project is the first of three tunnel projects that make up the regional tunnel system. The ORT project began final design in 2021. This paper discusses the advancements made to the ORT preliminary planning concepts considering property availability, alignment optimization, tunnel boring machine evaluation, contract packaging and delivery schedules.

This report presents overview of the authors' results of thermodynamical investigation of some important metallurgical processes and phenomena. Among them: carbo thermal reduction of silica, and boron oxide, silicon carbide obtaining from different precursors, investigations on copper and manganese ores processing, investigations on pollution from different sources. Special attention is paid-to thermodynamical approach to investigation and estimation of multi component multi element compositions stability, developed by the authors. A comparative study has been made by the Bureau of Mines of several analytical methods for determining carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides in toxic gases produced by the detonation of explosives. Laboratory and field methods and detector-tube devices are described. Analytical results are compared, and reliability of the various methods is discussed. INTRODUCTION In all underground mining there is ever-present danger to persons from possible overexposure to carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides created by explosives or blasting agents. These health hazards, recognized for many years, led to the early establishment by the Bureau of Mines of specific requirements regarding fumes generated by explosives authorized for use in underground coal mines in the United States.3

This paper examines the desired blast fragmentation results associated with mining fleet performance at Sidney Quarry of Pike Industries, A CRH Company by reducing cycle times and hauling less oversize material generated from the blast to the crusher to increase the overall plant throughput. We are constrained with blast patterns due to the poorly sorted and fractured seams in the quarry, which is angled at 35° NE and dipping at 80° and runs parallel to the Interstate-95 highway on the east of the quarry boundary about 600 ft, making it challenging to alter the blast patterns for optimal yield. We evaluated multiple relationships between blast patterns in conjunction with loader diggability. Results analyzed include the digging hours, fleet cycle times, and the fragment size with the optimized blast design through 3GSM software to arrive at the optimal yield to maximize the crusher throughput. Our primary objective is to focus on safety with efficient cycle times and clean floors & clean face generation for better operational efficiencies. Secondly, to optimize the crusher yield which is an integral part of quarry operation. Further, this paper provides the utilization of 3GSM blasting techniques in quarry applications with computer vision fragmentation analysis and VizaLogix, a fleet management software to analyze the cycle times sampling.

The third edition of the Underground Construction Association of SME?s (UCA) Cut-ting Edge series of conferences focused on a challenge every underground construction and tunneling project faces: controlling ground water. The conference, held in New York City in November, is a partnership between the UCA and The North American Tunneling Journal. It featured more than 20 technical presentations by professionals from around the world. Each described specific challenges unique to their projects and the solutions employed. More than 175 professionals attended the two-day conference that included an exhibition featuring 17 companies. In addition to the technical program, the Cutting Edge conference featured a site visit to the $10.4 billion East Side Access Project. Sponsors of the meeting included Soil Freeze, Traylor Bros., Kiewit, Skanska, Moretrench, Aecom and The Robbins Co.

WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

Why are we losing our liberties?
