THE Bureau of the Mint of the United States Treasury maintains 13 offices for the purchase of gold-bullion, and this paper describes an investigation to establish the reasonable differences in the assay-results at the various institutions which may be commercially allowable in the settlements between them. Beginning with the comparative assay of proof-gold at the Philadelphia mint and the Utrecht mint, which shows 0.00002 as the closest agreement now possible, eight tables of comparative results, taken from the regular work of the service, are given. These tables begin with very fine gold, produced in an electrolytic refinery, showing close agreement. in the assay-results, and follow through decreasing gold fineness and . increasing amounts and complexity of base metals to very impure and complex bars produced at cyanide-mills, some of which give widely-varying results. Next is given a series of results on samples, prepared and sent out to various laboratories in the service, to test the influence of different metals and various combinations upon the' agreement of the assay-results; 11 samples were sent out and each one was assayed from 44 to 71 times, making a total of 623 assays. To these are added 107 assays of identical samples of coin-gold. In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. The South African Mining Charter requires all mines, including diamond mines, to subscribe' to .the following empowerment objectives:

In recent decades, significant advances have improved the modelling techniques for predicting slope failure. Predicting failures is vital in open pit mining due to the significant risk posed to personnel and equipment from unstable pit walls. Failures not only cause harm and damage to people and equipment but also cause delays to production and subsequently increase operational costs. Coupled with improvements in modelling techniques, utilisation of advanced scanning systems, such as high-definition imagery from UAVs has enabled faster and more precise mapping and modelling. However, one key element required for accurate slope stability modelling and monitoring is the ability for mine geotechnical engineers to have an accurate understanding of the mineralogy and moisture content of slopes, in real-time. To address this challenge, research has been undertaken to utilise hyperspectral imaging across a broad spectrum, combined with high-definition imagery, and LiDAR to scan slopes for minerals and moisture content. In addition to accurately mapping mineralogy and moisture, the data must be collected autonomously and remotely to ensure ongoing safety. The results show that there are many direct and indirect benefits from this new technology, including the ability to monitor slopes at a safe distance and in real-time, improved accuracy of modelling, detection of risks, and improving the automation workflow for geotechnical engineers. The paper presents recommendations for the implementation of the technology in open cut mining environments.

A implantação do LIMS (Sistemas de Gerenciamento de Informações de Laboratório) surgiu da necessidade do Laboratório ArcelorMittal Vega se atualizar tecnologicamente afim de melhorar rastreabilidade de informações e sistematizar a execução de atividades dentro do Laboratório. Os colaboradores destinavam muito tempo à manipulação de planilhas utilizadas no armazenamento e controle das análises, deixando o negócio vulnerável aos requisitos da Norma ISO / TS 16949 em todo o Laboratório. Anterior ao sistema, todo o cadastro, controle e gestão dos ensaios eram realizados em planilhas, que são mantidos pela equipe do Laboratório. Os maiores impactos no uso das planilhas são caracterizados pelos erros de transcrição de dados e cálculo manual de resultados nas diversas etapas do processo, potencializando assim a incidência de erros e muito tempo dos colaboradores envolvidos na gestão dos documentos. O trabalho demonstra o processo de implantação do LIMS no Laboratório, sua integração com equipamentos de analise e sistema de Nível 3, além de benefícios alcançados em termos de confiabilidade, redução de tempo para análises e benefícios para sistema de qualidade.

THE PROBLEM: MANUFACTURING PRODUCTIVITYThe 1985 President's Commission [I] on Industrial Competitiveness found compelling evidence of the declining economic position of the United States in world markets. The annual rate of increase in the United States productivity is approximately one-seventh that of our major trading partners over the last decade: profit levels in manufacturing investments are below those of the mid-1960's; an increasingly negative trade balance since 1971; and a sharp decline in the United States share of world trade in manufactured goods for more than two decades. A particularly dramatic example of the shifting economic balance is the fact that Japanese productivity growth has been five times greater than that of this country since 1960. In face, Japan's productivity now exceeds that of the United States in such critical industries as steel, transportation equipment, electronics and electrical machinery.American employees have experienced the competitive consequences of this nation's lagging industrial performance. Between 1980 and 1984 alone, the population of non-farm employees engaged in manufacturing dropped from 22.4% to 20.6%. This reduction in manufacturing must be arrested.Commissions RecommendationsThe comprehensive set of recommendations offered by the President's Commission recognized the nation's ""key competitive advantages"", technology and human resources, and calls for their strengthening. Particular emphasis is placed on manufacturing technology and the fact that this country does not translate research into new technologies rapidly and fully.""Perhaps the most glaring deficiency in America's technological capabilities has been our failure to devote enough attention to manufacturing or 'process' technology. It does us little good to design state-of-the-art products if within a short time our foreign competitors can manufacture them more cheaply. The United States has failed to apply its own technologies to manufacturing. Robotics automation and statistical quality control were all first developed in the United States but in recent years they have been more effectively applied elsewhere""."

Pre-blast surveys are used to document the condition of a structure prior to the commencement of blasting activities. They provide the best means of determining the pre-existence of visible cracking and deterioration in a structure before blasting is initiated. A small investment in a good pre-blast survey, coupled with good public relations, could mean a large cost savings for a company in the future.

Blast vibrations induce sounds within neighboring residences. A house wide vibration and sound monitoring system was installed in a West Virginia home which was subjected to blasts at varied distances and direction. Eighty-nine blast events were monitored and analyzed for this case study. Fifteen channels of data were collected including three triaxial geophones, one airblast microphone, one uniaxial geophone mounted to the wall of the house (response channel), and four microphones that recorded CD quality sound waves inside the house. Each of these channels was recorded on the same time reference and scale allowing for direct comparison of the waveforms. The response channel signal was easily separated into ground vibration induced and airblast induced movement due to the differences in their times of arrival. This response channel was then compared to the sounds recorded inside the home to determine which component of blast vibration induced the maximum sound response inside the home. Blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast. While for blasts beyond 762 meters (2,500 feet), the maximum sound response inside the home was caused by ground vibration without exception. When airblast was identified as the dominant sound generator in the house, the peak amplitude of the sound was directly related to the amplitude of airblast. When ground vibration was identified as the dominant sound generator in the house, the peak amplitude of sound was not related to the amplitude of ground vibration. In these cases, sound amplitude was driven by the conditions present in the house such as loose items, doors, and windows creating sudden peaks from falling or slamming. In the same respect, sound amplitudes varied depending on where the sound was recorded. Different rooms generated very different sounds based on the contents of the room. Findings from frequency analysis showed that the frequency content of sounds inside the house were not related to frequency content of airblast or ground vibration regardless of source suggesting that residents would have difficulty determining the source of blast induced noise in their homes.

"This study aims to discuss personal and behavioral parameters contributing to heat-related accidents. To study the prevention approaches, it is essential to look at the various factors at the individual, management, and industrial levels. Qualitative risk analysis methods are used based on the public data in the USA to find the impact of the environmental and behavioral parameters on the heat stress and heat strain of mine workers. The effects of individual factors such as worker experience, age, fitness, lifestyle, acclimation, and more are illustrated. The significance of factors such as the roles of the mine management and regulatory agencies are addressed.INTRODUCTIONOccupational hazards in mining industry endanger the health and safety of the workers and productivity loss for mining companies. Among those hazards is the exposure to excessive heat that has adverse effects on the health of mine workers. The intensity of heat load is a significant factor in fatal and non-fatal heat-related accidents. Severe environmental conditions combined with a high level of activity in the mining industry increases the vulnerability of individuals to health and safety hazards (Ngwenya, Oosthuizen, Cross, Frimpong, & Chaibva, 2018). Lack of regulations and legislation addressing the heat issue in the mining industry (i.e., underground and open pit mines, processing plants) also raises widespread concerns.Along the climate change, various sources contribute to the overall heat load at a mine site (Hanna, Kjellstrom, Bennett, & Dear, 2011; Kjellstrom, Lemke, Hyatt, & Otto, 2014). In underground mines, the majority of heat comes from different sources such as geothermal gradient, equipment, auto compression, groundwater, and blasting (Maurya, Karena, Vardhan, Aruna, & Raj, 2015). On the surface, however, the majority of heat load can be sourced to solar energy. The exposure to excessive heat might result in heat-related illnesses, fatigue and fainting, loss of concentration, performance reduction, and production loss (Kocsis & Sunkpal, 2017; Roghanchi, 2017). The severity of the effects depends on duration and level of exposure and the response of an individual to heat stress. The response of an individual is influenced by different factors including age, gender, fitness, lifestyle, experiences, and past medical history."

Pre-cambrian scheelite deposits in Northeastern Brazil are widespread in a high grade metamorphic terrain. Previously these deposits had been interpreted as contact-metasomatic. In this paper, a volcanigenic model is invoked based on the volcanic setting (proximal to distal) and the absence of associated felsic intrusives and spatially associated metasomatic skarns. The tungsten was introduced into sediments by volcanic- exhalative processes and subsequently remobilized and further concentrated by heat and metamorphis fluids associated with high-grade metamorphism and migmitization. An alternative syngenetic - diagenetic model is discussed which requires the transport of tungsten by heteropoly acids and deposition of the tungsten as a function of Eh and Ph conditions and different clastic depositional environments. While such stratabound tungsten deposits are considered rare in North America, the hypotheses developed in this paper may open new areas for exploration.

The iron ores mined by LKAB in the north of Sweden have excellent beneficiation properties. This gives LKAB a favourable position as regards the production of low silica pellets for direct reduction. LKAB have concentrated on developing and marketing grades of pellets for the Midrex-Purofer-HyL process group, i.e. such D.R. processes which are carried out in a shaft furnace or a static bed using reformed natural gas as a reducing agent. The paper deals with properties and quality demands of iron ore pellets for such processes. Matters such as the effect of the residual magnetite in the fired pellets on the degree of metallization, the amount and composition of the slag phase in the pellets, the mechanism of the disintegration during reduction, the state of swelling of the pellets during the conditions prevailing in these processes, the importance of the porosity, the improvement of the reducibility and lowering of the sticking tendency of the pellets by small additions of suitable additives and the influence of the pellet size are discussed. A special test procedure for D.R. pellets has been elaborated by LKAB. Thus, three metallurgical properties are routinely determined separately, namely reducibility, reduction strength and sticking. The test methods are described. Finally the present and future LKAB pellets for direct reduction are presented with respect to chemical analyses and metallurgical properties.

"The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Causeway Project in Kuwait is estimated at approximately $US3.7 billion and consists of constructing a causeway across the Kuwait Bay, connecting the Shuwaikh Port with the northern Subiyah area, where the new “Silk City” will be established. The $US77 billion Silk City will revive the ancient “Silk Road” trade route and will become a major free trade zone linking central Asia with Europe. The new city will be completed in 2030, it will house about 700,000 people and, furthermore, it will include the tallest tower in the world. The Causeway will stretch approximately 23.3 miles and will be composed of a combination of low-level bridges, embankments and transition islands. A bridge of about 16.8 miles in length will span the navigation channel and a free flow interchange at the Shuwaikh Port will connect the causeway to the main road network in Kuwait City. The geo-construction portion of the project involves the execution of 1,200 drilled shafts with diameters of 98 inches and 118 inches embedded to a maximum depth of about 276 feet. Details are provided concerning the subsurface conditions, the geotechnical characteristics and the strength parameters, illustrating, as well, the installation technique implemented for the construction of the drilled shafts. In addition, particular attention is paid to the description of the challenges faced while constructing the drilled shafts at a distance of about 10 miles from the shore, such as the depth of the water above the midline (more than 160 feet), an underwater current and the tidal variation.INTRODUCTIONThis paper presents an overview of the foundation works executed for a 37km causeway across the Bay of Kuwait, connecting Shuwaikh Port with Subiyah New Town Development. The project, in which Trevi is actively engaged, includes a 27 km low-level bridge across the bay, a main bridge with a span of 200 m, an overpass and a 5 km approach road onshore in Subiyah.The main purpose of this report is to provide information about the nature and features of the applied technique of bored piles, including a description of each work phase and other related details, in order to aid in the design of the foundations for the proposed construction.Works for the soil investigation were carried out in accordance with accepted geotechnical standards/guidelines. Brief descriptions of the methodology of the field are also provided in this report."

The tentative schedule of this gathering lists on the program the "President's Address," and I want to assure you that this will not be an address or a lengthy speech. It's said that a good speaker is one who arises to the occasion and then promptly sits clown, so please be at ease for I intend to sit clown very soon. There are other men here who have spent time writing and preparing papers on subjects that are to come up for discussion at this meeting, which will be, I'm sure, more interesting than what I have to say this morning; so again I'll say, we'll get this part of the program under way promptly.

ALUMINUM'S war history is the record of a successful race to expand facilities fast enough to meet the multiple increases in military requirements, principally for aircraft. From the beginning of the war program in 1940 through 1942, requirements estimates were repeatedly lifted to new high levels, and plans for increasing capacity had to be constantly revised. In 1943, basic metal supply caught up with and exceeded requirements, and by 1944, the surplus of primary production was large enough to force reduction in output and plant closings. In the past two years, ingot capacity has been ample, though periodic critical shortages have been experienced for a few fabricated shapes as a result of sudden shifts in demand. In the States of Kelantan, Trengganu, Kedah, and Perlis, the rulers are assisted by State Councils and by British advisers appointed by the British Government.3 With respect to Johore, the largest, richest, and most highly organized of the Malay States not in the Federation, the treaty of December 11, 1885, with Great Britain, defined the relations of the State to the British Govern- ment and allowed the Maharaja to assume the title of "Sultan"; an amendment to this treaty (May 12, 1914) provided that the Sultan should be advised by a British officer, the General Adviser. ...... ABSTRACT Concentrator plant design has evolved from large numbers of small grinding mills to small numbers of large mills. Consequently, plant performance often hinges on the productivity of a single large semi-autogenous grinding mill. Industry attempts to address the grinding mills’ critical nature frequently result in specifications that can be made simpler, more economical, and better focused on the project’s goals. This paper surveys current specification writing practices and proposes an improved approach recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are interrelated in a successful project. The lessons learned here can apply to all types of machinery specifications.

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

IN five years mineral wool has grown to a thirty-million-dollar industry from one whose output was valued, in 1933, at $1,700,000. Ten years ago, in 1928, there were only seven producing companies, with an annual output of but 50,000 tons. By 1936 fifty or more companies were producing half a million tons. The industry is still growing vigorously and will profit from the expected activity in building in 1339, for two-thirds of this material is used for building insulation and to assist in fire-retarding, in both new and old homes. It is as useful in the South, to protect against heat, as in the North, to keep out the cold, if one may speak nontechnically. It is a concomitant of air conditioning, that new addition to the American standard of living that began in theatres, department stores, and railroad dining cars, and is rapidly progressing down to small homes. Here, then, is an industry that is only beginning to have a present, and one with an almost certain important future; one that depends upon mining and the by-products of mining for all of its raw materials; one that every progressive mining man should know something about.

"Mining companies routinely invest in improvements to their processing operations, but often these enhancements do not work to full effect.Improvements can be ineffectual because underlying process problems are not identified or prioritised for correction or repair.This is frequently because ‘black box’ solutions deployed to implement process control improvements typically rely on instrumentation to provide data for algorithms to work effectively, and these solutions are often ineffective or disabled at mineral processing sites.There are three key reasons they can fail to deliver: vital instrumentation is not calibrated or functioning as required basic process control and loop tuning was not implemented correctly or is in need of tuning there is an inability to support the ‘black box’ solutions on-site.Many of these problems can be overcome by implementing operational analytics that identify where problems are occurring and prioritise where improvements need to be made.Incorporating operational analytics into process improvement is not a new methodology. It is more a back-to-basics approach to make more efficient use of capital and systems already deployed.Data collection systems, such as the OSIsoft PI System, provide real-time and historical process information for process control experts to analyse and identify areas for improvement. However, most systems are not used effectively. With some simple enabling, data collection systems can provide evidence for prioritising investments in improvements and determining an investment’s effectiveness.MIPAC advocates that the initial step, with analytical evidence, is that clients review the control strategies and implement small influential instrument repairs/calibrations and operator training. This can significantly boost process productivity without the need to spend large sums of money on new capital or employing expensive, difficult to maintain ‘black box’ solutions.A simple Stage-Gate®-style approach ensures that small investments in evidence-based process improvements deliver significant benefits to mining operations.CITATION:Hill, D J, 2014. The Narragansett Bay Commission Phase III CSO Program includes construction of the 11,600-foot long, 30-foot ID, deep rock Pawtucket Tunnel in Rhode Island. This paper provides an overview of the Design Build Project features and highlight some of the important design considerations, features, and innovations, including geologic conditions and related TBM design, and deep shaft and tunnel segment designs. The paper provides the most recent updates on some of the project construction activities including TBM tunnel progress and retrieval schemes, tunnel pump station and deep vertical shaft liner installations, SEM construction, and microtunneling for the longest adit using Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar pipes.
