"Results of a program of dust research carried out at the Mines Branch Laboratory, Elliot Lake, indicate that dust-concentration estimates vary greatly, depending on the sampling instrument, the assessment technique and the properties of the dust cloud. The wide range of the ratio between the estimates by any pair of instruments shows that the correlation between the health hazard and dust-concentration estimates by most existing sampling instruments must be questionable. Important studies are being carried out to permit the definition of mine environments in more precise technical terms. The influence of size selection, the physical property measured, composition and sampling period on the assessment of the health hazard are discussed."

Haul truck fatal accidents and injuries continue to be a significant concern for the mining industry. However, the availability of high-quality training materials continues to be limited. Near-miss incident accounts, if packaged well, could help fill this gap, because for every fatality, there are hundreds of reportable accidents and thousands of undocumented near misses. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) collected detailed accounts of 21 near-miss incidents in virtual interviews with mineworkers at surface mining operations across the country. From these interviews, researchers created four simulation videos using the Unity game engine. The simulation videos bring these events to life through first-person retelling and various visual perspectives of actual events. Each video exemplifies a critical safety message and a common haul truck hazard. This paper describes the process of taking narratives and turning them into impactful visual stories using graphic simulation. NIOSH plans to co-release these simulation videos with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to the mining industry to raise awareness and ultimately help reduce haul truck-related accidents and fatalities in mining.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

This publication is intended to document recent innovations and technologies that have the best potential for effectively improving the quality of marine foundations while reducing the cost, time and risk of construction. Marine foundations originated in Neolithic times with the Swiss Lake Dwellers who constructed pile-supported houses, safe from invading tribes. The Queen of Babylonia built the first recorded bridge in 1500 BC across the Tigris. The foundations were large flat stones laid on the river bottom. About the same time in India, builders extended their water well techniques to the construction of ?well? foundations in the beds of their rivers. These were really the first open caissons; brick walls were built up in a circular ring while divers excavated sand from the bottom, sometimes at a depth of 100 feet. The Romans extended the clay-filled cribs of the Middle East to shallow cofferdams, which they sealed by underwater concrete made with pozzolanic cement from Mt. Vesuvius.

Expectations for coal in the early to mid-1970's prompted the government and industry to pursue research and development programs to increase underground and surface mining coal productivity and net coal recovery. Several programs concerned advanced surface mining methods for thin seam coal recovery. Three such programs, along with related areas of interest, are presented in this paper, namely: (1) extended depth augering for trench-strip applications; (2) high recovery auger heads for enhanced recovery; and (3) variable wall mining in low cover longwalls. Conceptual development is examined, prototype testing is discussed, and potential operations are considered.

In Si and FeSi production, the main Si source is SiO2, in the form of quartz. Reactions with SiO2 generate SiO-gas that further reacts with SiC to Si. During heating, quartz will transform to other SiO2 modifications with cristobalite as the stable high temperature phase. Transformation to cristobalite has been investigated and shown to be a slow process where the rate varies between the investigated quartz types. The effect of quartz versus cristobalite as SiO2 source has been studied for reaction (1) 2SiO2 + SiC = 3SiO + CO, by heating of pellets with SiO2 + SiC in Ar-gas. The reaction was faster with cristobalite than with quartz. Initial experiments indicates that this is the case only in Ar and not in CO-atmosphere The higher specific surface area of cristobalite is believed to contribute to the higher rate. The industrial consequences of the observed difference between quartz types are discussed.

DOUG HALBE: We're not quite to the end of our session, but we're close. We've had a lot of fun with some of these spill ideas. But these are serious problems, and I think we might be able to benefit by continuing to compile these. Several years ago, the metallurgists at the various operations of Gold Fields Mining Company had a newsletter that came out every two months for several years. This publication consisted of short articles by the staff at the various operations, plus a few others, on problems they'd had and how they solved them. One very useful article, "Things We'd Have Done Differently at Chimney Creek," was written shortly after start-up. John Marsden was the editor and John Mansanti contributed to it, as did Jim Arnold (our distinguished co-chair) and Mike Gleason. I would be interested, with the permission of the audience, in editing that article to make it a little bit less abrasive and putting it into the record here. I think it's a useful SME function to maintain a list of things we've done wrong in plant design, things we don't want to do again. If we have another open session in the future, would others be willing, even anonymously, to contribute, bring slides, and say "Hey, look at the goofs we made?" [laughter, followed by support from the audience] Okay, we'll plan on that. And we'll try to include the Chimney Creek list in the transcript of this session-perhaps edited a bit.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—Although Mr. Bordeaux prefaces his paper with the statement-that it is a general outline of practice in the Republic, many of his statements seem to be made from the view-point of a particular case, which does not always agree with general practice. For the purpose of calling attention to some of these variations, I respectfully offer the following comments: The operation of crushing and grinding is performed by so many different methods and systems that it is useless to select any one as the standard. However, primary crushing in rock-breakers followed by stamps is thus far so general that it might be so classified. Whether or not it is the best way, is open to question. Regrinding may be performed by any of the various types of Chilean mills, Huntington mills, or similar machines, or the material may be taken directly from the stamps and delivered to the tube-mills. Mr. Bordeaux's statement that " the slimes can be treated only by decantation; the new Butters slime-filter, as used in Nevada, does not seem to be successful with silver-ores," is surely an error. All over Mexico many of the purely silver-ores are being successfully handled by the Butters or similar filters, such as the Moore and the Burt filters, and a letter to the manufacturers of these filters will undoubtedly bring a list of the silver-ores now being successfully treated in this way. The statement that crushing silver-ores in solution is impossible is equally erroneous. Most modern mills crush the ore in solution, in some cases containing as much as 0.12 per cent, of KCN. I cannot for the moment recall any modern mill in Mexico which does not follow this practice. There may be some reason for it in particular instances, but, generally speaking, the practice is to crush in solution. Care in installation avoids any mechanical loss of cyanide, and the chemical loss is so small as to be negligible.

Estimating groundwater inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies for estimating steady-state groundwater inflows into deep rock tunnels. The case studies included the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels. In this paper, statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations. A semi-empirical procedure was utilized for estimating groundwater inflows into these deep rock tunnels. It is the most widely used method/procedure in the tunnel industry. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels which exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semi-empirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Packer test data plotted in histograms were observed in all cases to be log-normally distributed for the radial flow condition. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing irregularities in the distribution of the data and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable groundwater inflow estimates. This paper is based on the PhD thesis entitled “Improvements to the Current State of the Practice in Steady-State, Groundwater Inflow Estimates into Rock Tunnels based on the Application of Statistical Analysis Methods of Packer Test Data obtained from Exploratory Borings During Geotechnical Site Investigations.”

In tunneling through water-bearing formations, the expense of controlling the water can have a major impact on overall project cost. The author has seen the cost of an eight-foot, finished sewer tunnel rise from under $500 per foot to over $1,000 when a water problem, anticipated as modest, became severe. There is need for greater professionalism in the approach to groundwater control. The days of the forked stick should be behind us. The basic technology exists. Its application is not yet widespread. This paper discusses predrainage; that is, the lowering of water in advance of tunnel excavation. Both free air and compressed air tunnels are considered. Examples from recent tunnel projects are described. SPECIAL NATURE OF TUNNEL DEWATERING Tunneling is unlike other excavations below the water table in a number of significant ways. The tunnel excavation is always on the critical path; if production slows or stops, there is no other work for the heading crews, no other work to carry the cost of service crews and job overhead. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due to both nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustions. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines.

This paper analyses the energy consumption according to the type of dump scroll track during skip discharging in an inclined shaft hoist for an open pit mine. For the purpose of the project, it was necessary to set up an equation for a geometrical locus of a skip dump scroll track, and from the need for technical engineering and study purposes, to derive equations for two track types by using cam design theory (cosine track and linear accretion track). Skip discharging is analysed using discrete element method software, and dynamic simulation of its run is performed using Visual Nastran software. The energy consumption during skip discharging can be calculated from the rope tension obtained by dynamic simulation, and graphs obtained from the simulated results using discrete element method and Visual Nastran software. From this, the study demonstrates that the energy consumption at the cosine track is always lower than that at the linear accretion track, without regard to the property change of a payload depending on grain size distribution.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical, or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. .'The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness; proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. A paragraph is a sentence or a group of sentences forming an independent unit of the composition; it represents a unit of thought. A multiplicity of paragraphs produces a choppy effect; 'on the other hand, paragraphs of. excessive length are tiresome, because the belaboring of one unit of thought wearies the reader. The approach to Risk Management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate successful delivery of a project. The $NZ4.4B Auckland City Rail Link project is the largest and most complex transportation project yet undertaken in New Zealand. Risk management prior and during procurement was undertaken in accordance the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP) and through the use of an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline report. This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. This included the use of cloud-based delivery of geotechnical data and 3-D geological models, reducing tendering costs and allowing a focus on risk mitigation measures during the tender rather than data management.

This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

At Dillinger Hüttenwerke/Germany steel production of grades for linepipe applications especially for sour service has a long tradition. The BOF process after replacement of the vessels is optimized by a newly developed lime addition model and variations in lance tip geometry. Equipped with three state-of-the-art VOD tank degassers metallurgical requirements of lowest contents of e. g. sulphur, nitrogen and hydrogen can be achieved. Three continuous casting machines of vertical bending type with solid core even improve already high levels of cleanliness. The vertical part corresponds to the metallurgical length of 12 to 15 m and therefore assures a maximum of cleanliness after solidification before bending. Slab thickness up to 400 mm can be produced with model controlled dynamic soft reduction. The accurate alignments of the casters assure minimized segregation and microporosity. Surface and internal cracks can be avoided by special cooling, bending and straightening strategies.

Crushed coal, consisting of a wide range of sizes, was effectively blended by recycling it through a bin equipped with a particle distributor. Vertical blending was accomplished by simply recycling the coal; it was not significantly influenced by the horizontal blending that was achieved by the distributor. The method was effective, even though the coal was wet and possessed poor flowing characteristics. Recirculation appears capable of providing uniform blends of solids that can be more efficiently processed. Recirculation also appears useful, preceding packaging operations, to insure for blending of solids into specification products. Continuous measurement of the bulk density of the coal by a gamma ray meter proved to be an effective monitor of vertical blending effectiveness.
