El presente texto describe las características estructurales y estratigráficas de los yacimientos epitermales de baja sulfuración en el corredor estructural de San Pablo en Porculla, Cajamarca. En este sentido, el corredor se relaciona a un sistema de fallas regional que tiene rumbo general NW-SW y está segmentado por fallas transformantes de dirección NE-SW, que limitan bloques estructurales. Asimismo, sobre este corredor estructural se ubican en forma alineada una serie de yacimientos epitermales del tipo baja sulfuración. Los yacimientos están controlados por fallas de dirección NW-SE y contienen mineralización en vetas y mantos con relleno de cuarzos, calcita y baritina con importantes valores de oro y oro-plata y las estructuras menores relacionadas a las fallas transformantes. Finalmente, estos yacimientos pueden constituir un nuevo e importante objetivo de exploración por minerales de oro – plata del tipo bonanza.

Since man first mined underground, there has been need for adequate illumination; this need has never been fully supplied. At first, suitable lamps were not available. Gradually they have been developed, but along with that development the need for better and better lamps has continued owing to the following conditions and factors: 1. Increasing hazards from gas and dust ignitions. 2. The speeding of operations with mechanized mining, which necessitates greater visibility. 3. A demand that cleaner coal be loaded, which requires higher levels of illumination. 4. The cost of compensation for injuries that has created a demand for better illumination and safer lamps. Use of better lamps has been retarded by: 1. Prejudice and resistance to change on the part of the workers in some districts. 2. The cost and upkeep of the lamps. 3. The present types of lamps, while a great improvement over the old lamps, do not entirely fulfill the requirements for a safe and efficient light for underground workers.

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. Metallurgical testing at Cobre Las Cruces prior to production at the mill was done with overburden gossan. Some of that test gossan was a very fine material, wet by the water conditions at the bottom of the pit. When processed and stored wet at the fines material 3000 tonne (3307 tons) silo, this material cemented in a very unusual manner.

Thermoelectric properties of depleted uranium selenides and tellurides were investigated from room temperature to 700 C. Several depleted uranium monoselenides and monotellurides were doped with selected cationic and anionic materials to determine the effect of impurity additions on the thermoelectric properties. The undoped uranium selenides and tellurides were semimetallic conductors exhibiting low Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities. Partial or complete degeneracy was in evidence, indicating a charge carrier energy distribution similar to that in a metal. Doping increased the Seebeck coefficients of the uranium monoselenides and monotellurides; however, the corresponding change in the power factor in the figure of merit was small because of the increase in electrical resistivity.

The main operation of obtaining zinc from sulfide raw materials by hydrometallurgical technologies is the oxidation roasting of zinc concentrates in fluidized bed furnaces. The technical-economic parameters are determined by the parameters of the roasting process, which depend on the composition of the initial raw materials, the temperature of the bed and on other factors. The predetermined roasting temperature is maintained due to the change of specific efficiency as well as to the quantity of the heat removed from the bed. The efficiency of caissons depends at a high degree on the composition and the thickness of the accretion formed on the surface of the caissons. Forecasting the roasting results is impossible unless we know the mechanism of the accretion formation. The aim of the present paper is the thermodynamic analyses of the behavior of the charge compositions under roasting and the determination of the potential mechanism of the accretion formation. The thermodynamic analyses show that under conditions of the oxidation roasting the thermodynamic probability of the formation of zinc sulfate is higher than the probability of the oxide formation until a temperature of873 OK is reached. The thermodynamic probability of the formation of the lead sulfate is higher than the probability of oxide formation in the entire temperature range of roasting. The probability of formation of ferrites and silicates of zinc decreases only insignificantly the sulfate stability. The results of the investigation of the accretions composItion formed under roasting of concentrates with particle sizes less than 0.02 J..lm (60%), containing 65% of sphalerite (ZnS), 12% of pyrite and chalcopyrite (FeS2 and CufeSz) each, 3% of galenite (PbS), 7% of silica and other non-ore minerals, have shown that the composition of accretion varies depending on the depth of the accretion layer. The accretions on the caissons and the thermo-siphons consist mostly of zinc sulfate (more than 50%). The accretions of forehamber consist mostly of zinc oxide. They also contain ferrites and silicates. The formation of the sulfate zinc accretion in the cold parts of the fluidized bed furnace (the caissons and thermo-siphons) may be explained by a lower temperature on the surface and probably by a catalytic influence of the present oxides in the formation of S02 and sulfates. The nature of the structure of the accretion in the hotter parts of the furnace may supposedly be explained by the formation of elemental vaporous zinc during roasting.

"We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko at al. (1970) technique to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates. It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin aqueous film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system.This behavior was explained by the initial strong adsorption of positively charged interfacial complexes from the mixed surfactant system at the air/solution interface followed by adsorption at the silica interface. It was also shown that the chain length compatibility between the anionic and cationic surfactants controls the strength of the interfacial complex, determining an inhibition in the thin film rupture and dewetting of the film. The rupture mechanism was explained by an earlier established heterocoagulation mechanism between the positively charged air/solution interface and the solution/silica interface which remained negatively charged. The formation of the interfacial complex at the air/solution interface was confirmed by using surface tension data."

"In the cyanidation of silver ore, the need of oxygen is well recognized. Various methods have been introduced for supplying the oxygen. In usual practice, air is the source of oxygen and the methods of application are mechanical.This article gives the results of touts made to show the rate of dissolution of silver from each of the common silver minerals in cyanide solution, under conditions similar to those used in the practical recovery of silver from its ores. The effect of oxygen in aiding the dissolution of the silver from each mineral is also shown by a comparison of the methods of supplying the oxygen. Oxidation by preliminary roasting (500°C.) of each mineral sample gives the maximum extraction of the silver by treatment with cyanide.Each silver mineral5 used in these experiments was as pure as could be obtained from the mineral dealer. In their natural occurrence, silver minerals are not usually free from mineral impurities. They are usually closely associated with other minerals often forming, a complex mixture. The form of crystallization, the proportions, and properties of the diluent that incases or has been dispersed with the silver mineral may decidedly affect the dissolution rate of the silver from each mineral. While the following results should aid in the cyanidation of silver ores, each ore should be studied from the basis of the form and condition of the silver that is to be recovered.All the tests reported in this article were made on synthetic samples, prepared by mixing the particular silver mineral with clean sea sand. Each mineral was ground in an agate mortar to pass 100-mesh before mixing with the sand which had previously been ground in a porcelain pebble mill to 100-mesh. Such proportions of each mineral and the sand were used as to give a head assay of approximately 20 ounces of silver per ton to the synthetic sample.Agitation was carried on in stoppered bottles approximately one-third full of pulp, method apparently supplied all the atmospheric oxygen that would be taken up by the solution under usual conditions, because tests conducted in open bottles did not show increased recovery,"

The tolling, or processing for a fixed fee, of aluminum drosses to recover the metal units is a common practice in the Aluminum Industry. The Dross Toller is acting for the owner, and since most dross processes result in material going to landfill, it is important for the owner of the dross to insure that the toiler is processing the material and handling waste disposal in an environmentally responsible manner. The paper discusses the Dross Toiler Audit Program, first from the Reynolds Metals Company perspective. Included are the reasons the company deems it necessary to audit and a description of the items covered during the audit. Finally, there will be a discussion of the audit from the Tollers perspective - what the Toiler can expect when the auditor arrives.

In April, 1961, a large pillar was removed by blasthole mining methods at Inco's Murray mine. More than half a million pounds of explosives were used to break 2,120,000 tons of ore in a single underground blast. The 5, 10 2-inch boreholes, involving 435,815 feet of drilling, were loaded over a three-week period, using conventional explosives and short-period electric caps. From this blast, more than half a million tons of ore have been removed to date (April, 1962) through slusher trenches situated in the footwall of the ore body. T HE Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates six underground mines and two open pits in the Sudbury district in the north-central part of the Province. This paper describes the removal of a large pillar at the Murray mine (Figure 1), where 2,120,000 tons of ore were broken in a single underground blast by the blasthole mining method. This is the largest underground blast achieved to date (April, 1962) at Inco mines.

Coking coal producers often encounter variations in clean coal quality when mining multiseam deposits containing coals with different washability and coking properties. This paper describes how, for a single coal property, an initial clean coal specification with an ash content of 8.5% on an air-dried basis (ADB) and a free swelling index (FSI) of 5.5 can be improved to a specification with 7.5% ash content ADB and an FSI of 6. This is accomplished by sorting coal seams into two groups for processing and blending. A preliminary economic model demonstrates how this improvement enhances economic returns through a beneficial factor.

The dewatering of steel industry waste sludges prior to discard or recycling often presents significant problems due to the fineness of the sludge particles, which may blind the filter medium and/or produce a cake with limited porosity, Several steel plant wastes, such as sludges from BOF and EAF gas cleaning operations exhibit not only a very fine particle size, but also some degree of magnetic character, A novel process has been developed to utilize the magnetic character of such sludges to enhance dewatering through a multi-force operation involving magnetic, chemical and vacuum forces, The process consists essentially of undertaking vacuum filtration of a flocculated sludge in a magnetic field, This is achieved by installing a permanent magnetic in a fixed position on the axis of a vacuum drum filter, thus effecting filtration of magnetic and non- magnetic particles, bound together in flocs, in a magnetic field, Previous tests using a modified laboratory vacuum drum filter treating artificial (magnetite) and industry waste (BF sludge) feeds have demonstrated that filtration capacity may be enhanced significantly with increases of up to 3000/0, An explanation of the mechanisms associated with the enhanced filtration was not obvious, and this research was undertaken to permit the cake formation in the magnetic field to be monitored to provide an insight into the manner in which particles agglomerate to form the cake. These tests revealed that the magnetic field caused magnetic particles to be aligned perpendicular to the filter surface and to form channels through which filtrate could freely pass thus increasing capacity, The effects of various magnetic fields and field strengths on the filtration process were also investigated. A simple computer model was constructed to demonstrate the proposed theory of multi-force dewatering, The model output graphically illustrated the suggested mechanism and confirmed the enhanced capacity of the novel dewatering process,

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. The aim of this investigation was to determine whether the composition of a shielded-metal arc-welding electrode coating affected the low-temperature impact toughness of austenitic stainless-steel weld metal. It is generally accepted that increases in the δ-ferrite and nitrogen contents result in a decrease in toughness at low temperatures. Weld metal from electrodes with a basic coating also generally exhibit better toughness than those from rutile (acidic) electrodes. An increase in basicity was expected to decrease the number and size of inclusions, which in turn provides a tougher weld metal. Three commonly available potassium–rutile E308L electrodes were used, complying with the E308L-16 and E308L-17 specifications. Analysis of the electrode coatings showed very similar chemistry and basicity. Significant differences in the inclusion contents of the weld metals were observed: the E308L-17 weld metal had a lower inclusion content (1.4% by volume) than the E308L-16 weld metal (3.7%). The former had higher impact toughness at all temperatures, despite a slightly higher nitrogen content. Regression analysis confirmed that the inclusion content had a significant effect on the impact toughness at all temperatures.

Circuits with unconventional and potentially more complex designs are predicted to become more common in the future as plant designers and operators look to process ores more efficiently. Ideas have been presented on how circuit design may be changed to utilise todayÆs technology to address tomorrowÆs challenges (Powell and Bye, 2009; Powell, Benzer and Mainza, 2011a). High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) installations in various configurations; application of preconcentration plants eg sorting, magnetic or gravity separation; and preweakening devices eg microwave processing; are all examples of technologies having the potential to deliver a significant reduction in comminution energy for ores amenable to these processes. Not only will future novel circuits contain equipment for which models are not as well developed (if at all), many will likely require the ability to respond to variations in feed, and interact with geometallurgical models requiring process adjustments when the ore characteristics change.In order to confidently simulate more complex circuits and accommodate variations in feed type, a significant advancement in modelling and simulation capability is required. This includes dealing with multiple components in the feed, accommodating different competencies of ore, utilising physical separation opportunities and tracking the grade reporting along the different potential processing routes. Developing the means to simulate complex circuits has been a key priority of a collaborative group of comminution researchers working to solve these challenges.Simulations are presented utilising a new configurable simulation interface called the model developers kit (MDK). The MDK is designed to accommodate multi-components and incorporate new models under development. The Bureau of Mines conducted beneficiation and smelting studies on siliceous offgrade manganese samples to indicate effective methods of manufacturing silicomanganese from materials that cannot be economically beneficiated to meet General Services Administration (GSA) specifications for stockpiling. Laboratory and pilot-plant flotation tests were conducted on 2 samples, 1 from the waste-tailings dump of the Domestic Manganese & Development Co , Butte, Mont., and the other from the Nettie mine in the Butte-Philipsburg area. Smelting tests were made on the combined concentrates from the pilot-plant flotation tests and on part of the tailings sample The flotation scheme found to be adequate in laboratory tests and later in the pilot-plant tests consisted of flotation by a fuel oil-tall oil emulsion in an acid circuit (pH )-1-.8 to 5.0). The oil-emulsion reagent flocculated the manganese minerals and selectively floated them from the siliceous gangue, In the pilot-plant flotation test on Butte-mill tailings 90.1 percent of the manganese was recovered in a concentrate that analyzed 32.6 percent Mn, 4.8 percent Fe and 28.1 percent Si02. In the test on Nettie mine ore 90.8 percent of the manganese was recovered in a concentrate that analyzed 36 6 percent Mn, 5.5 percent Fe, and 26-4 percent Si02.

"Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid which has been shown to exhibit antifibrotic activity against silicosis. Tetrandrine is characterized by its strong binding to alveolar macrophages and inhibition of particle-induced respiratory burst activity in these phagocytes. In contrast, tubocurine and tubocurarine are structurally similar to tetrandrine but exhibit little effect on fibrosis or activation of alveolar macrophages. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of tetrandrine on macrophage production of monokines in response to occupational dusts, and to determine tetrandrine's effect on monokine-medicated cell growth using a mouse thymocyte proliferation assay and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a positive control. Stimulation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica dust resulted in a release of monokines which caused a fourfold increase in thymocyte proliferation. Coal dust, on the other hand, had no effect on macrophage production of this cytokine. Tetrandrine was found to exhibit a dose-dependent inhibition of monokine release from both silica and LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages. In experiments where thymocytes were directly treated with tetrandrine, a dose-dependent inhibition of thymocyte proliferation was noted with both interleukin-1- (IL-1) specific and nonspecific mitogenic (concanavalin A) actions. In contrast to the inhibitory potency of tetrandrine, tubocurarine was found to have no effect on either the production of monokines by LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages or IL-I-mediated thymocyte proliferation. These results provide a correlation between the ant:fibrotic effect of tetrandrine and inhibition of macrophage activation. INTRODUCTIONThe pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation of occupational dusts has been associated with abnormal activation of alveolar macrophages such as the release of various cytokines capable of inducing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. These macrophage-derived cytokines include interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-B (TGF-(B), macrophage derived growth factor (MDGF), and interferon [1, 2].Interleukin-1 is a major macrophage-derived cytokine that has been shown to exhibit multiple biological effects on a variety of target cells. It is known to cause leukocyte [3, 4] and endothelial cell activation [5, 6], and to affect the synthesis and maintenance of the extracellular matrix by stimulation of fibroblast proliferation [7-9], synthesis of collagens [10] and gluco-saminoglycans [11], and prostaglandin E2 production [12]. In addition, IL-1 plays an important role in the initiation of an immune response through its direct activation of lymphocytes and stimulation of the production of other cytokines, such as interferons and hemopoietic colony-stimulating factors, needed for the expression of an immune response [13]. As a major cytokine in the immune-inflammatory sequela, IL-1 is also produced by epidermal, epithelial, lymphoid, and vascular tissues after infection, injury, or antigenic challenge [14]. Agents such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), immune complexes, and particulates are known to activate the synthesis and release of IL-1 by monocytes and macrophages [15]. These substances also trigger intracellular signals leading to altered arachidonic acid metabolism. Although the mechanism is still not clear, prostaglandins have been shown to suppress IL-1 translation via the induction of cyclic adenosine-monophosphate (CAMP), whereas leukotrienes produce a positive signal for IL-1 production [13]."

Oil and .gas reservoirs exist under pressure within the pore spaces of rock structures or traps. Wells are drilled to produce these reservoirs. Under primary operation, the natural energy of expanding fluids in and adjacent to the reservoir forces or drives oil and gas to the wells. There are three basic sources of energy: dissolved gas, water, and gas cap. Typical recovery by primary methods is only 10 to 25 per cent of the oil in place for the dissolved gas drive but is generally higher for the others. Secondary recovery involves the injection of water or gas to supplement natural energy, thereby increasing recovery over that obtainable by primary operation alone. In many cases ultimate recovery with secondary methods is 1.2 to 2.0 times the expected primary recovery. The type programme adaptable in a field depends on its 'primary performance and on certain reservoir characteristics. In the United States, application of secondary recovery methods is becoming increasingly important. About 22 per cent of United States oil production now comes from fields in which injection projects are operating. In 1953, nearly 1.4 million barrels of oil daily came from such fields, more than double the amount in the early 40's. Ultimate primary recovery from known pools is estimated at roughly 73 billion barrels. Secondary recovery projects already in operation will increase this to almost 80 billion, an increase of almost 10 per cent. Unitized secondary recovery projects have been very successful. From unitized projects alone, industry reserves of oil in the United States have been increased by 3 1/2 billion barrels. In Canada, secondary recovery has not been so wide spread mainly because D-3 reef reservoirs which have held the major reserves are under water drive. However, appreciable amounts of water are being injected in the Redwater D-3, Leduc D-2 and Joarcum Viking reservoirs, and gas in the Golden Spike D-3. In both countries, possible achievements in increased recovery through secondary recovery methods now in use and by new ones which may be developed through research and field trial are a challenge to the scientist and the industry.

The refractory performance of Peirce-Smith converters is considered to be mainly determined by effects of process control and refractory installation design. BHP Copper has shown that, over the last four years, considerable improvements in tuyere line life can be affected .by maintaining a uniform temperature in the operating converter and by ensuring sufficient and specific placement of expansion allowance in the construction of the refractory brickwork. A combination of optimized crane availability, rapid matte transfer, converter operating practices, new refractory installation techniques and applications has minimized out-of stack time. In addition, larger diameter tuyere pipes and hard piping have increased blowing rates and lowered cycle times, which has resulted in a tuyere line performance in excess of 62,500 tonnes of blister copper before maintenance is required. This paper discusses the refractory installation design changes that were made to increase tuyere line life.

In the Bureau of Mines investigations of respiratory apparatus, a laboratory study of dust respirators has been conducted, and the results will be published in detail as a technical paper. Many industrial dust respirators, and many fabrics and filtering materials were tested. The principal results of these tests, and the conclusions drawn from them, are presented below. Reference to the patent literature discloses numerous types of dust respirators, mostly based on the filter principle. The present study included only representative filter-type respirators, purchased on the market.
