"PT Freeport Indonesia is preparing the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine to be the successor of the currently operating Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine. The DMLZ is block cave mine situated 500 m below the DOZ mine and approximately 1600 m depth from surface. Both of the block caving mines require draw point construction in the extraction level to extract the ore from caved area above. Learning from the experience in DOZ, the construction & maintenance of draw points in the production panels is a significant challenge in supporting consistent production.The average DOZ draw point construction duration is approximately 46 shifts per draw point. The time frame for construction is dependent on several variables; availability of the conventional forming system, material availability, and development tolerances. The repair of concrete floors and lintel sets causes production downtime. Reviewing the old DOZ draw point design, there is an opportunity to increase constructability, durability, and reliability of DMLZ draw points. This paper discusses how the DMLZ has improved draw point construction productivity and is on track to significantly reduce costs whilst increasing the quality by using the Six Sigma Improvement Method.Introduction The DMLZ Mine is part of the PT. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) future Expansion to its underground mining complexes. It is the fourth vertical lift in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) deposit (Figure 1).Currently, it is under development phase.The DMLZ mine will be a block cave mine using an advanced undercutting method. The DMLZ extraction level will be approximately 1,600 meters below the surface on the 2570 level with column heights of roughly 500 m. The Undercut is on 2590 level, some 20 meters above the extraction level."

This report reviews the work performed on Task M of Bu-Mines Contract H0220073 to develop an engineering model of a surface and subsurface communications system for normal mine operations and for post disaster rescue operations. The system concept provides for one-way transmission of digital information between a number of identifiable subsurface terminals or subcenters and a single surface station. It also provides 2-way voice communications between the subcenters and the surface station. The basic communications link is electromagnetic signaling through-the-earth, but the system is also capable of using mine phone lines as an alternate link. Engineering models of three subcenters and one surface terminal (see Figure 1-1) have been fabricated in order to demonstrate the system's performance. The system concept, however, permits up to 20 subcenters to be incorporated if desired. Additional subcenters are also feasible for large mines if they can be deployed in the mine to operate on a noninterfering basis.

Minimizing the effects of corrosion improves the long-term performance of the rock anchors and ground control systems in underground mines, which is fundamental for safe operation over the design period. The primary objective of this study is to explain the problems due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), strain-induced corrosion cracking (SICC) and other forms of corrosion, and why the mining industry’s ground control professionals should take this into serious consideration. It is important to clearly determine the kind of SCC mechanisms that causes roof bolt failures in order to suggest the necessary action plan to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of the cause. Pertinent literature and studies around the globe on this complicated subject are reviewed. The secondary objective is to encourage the use of corrosion-resistant ground control products in the underground mining industry in areas of high corrosion potential. Characteristics of SCC on high strength steel are also reviewed. The literature and preliminary studies to date indicate that research work is necessary in United States.

Discussion held at the sessions of the Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-As a result of this discussion, an expression of opinion covering all points of unanimous agreement was adopted and signed by members of the Institute party as individuals. This statement, which was printed in the Bulletin of December, 1910, is reprinted below, as an introduction to ,the detailed report of the discussion. It should be clearly understood that it does not constitute an official declaration by the Institute, the rules of which forbid any such action. At the New Haven meeting of February, 1909, a free discussion of the plan of the canal took place, in which the critics of the present scheme had full opportunity to state their views. That discussion was continued at considerable length in the newspapers ; but the Institute was never committed to either side. In this latter instance, the situation is precisely similar. Certain members and guests of the Institute, having had the advantage of later developments and of personal inspection, have expressed the conclusions at which they have arrived on their own responsibility ; and these conclusions are published by the Institute, subject to further discussion, like any other part of its proceedings. The general statement referred to contained a promise that the full discussion, of which it was a result, would be subsequently printed ; and this promise is fulfilled, so far as practicable, in the subjoined report, concerning which I beg to offer the following explanations: 1. It is made up of the remarks of the members of our party, as subsequently written out and mailed to the Secretary. 2. In editing these contributions, I have condensed the material considerably by cutting out much repetition of opinions and phrases ; and in such excision, I, frankly confess, the authors whose communications were delayed, have been the sufferers. Also data were obtained from U.S. manufacturers and suppliers of equipment which is potentially applicable and available in the U.S. for hydraulic mining. The data have been divided into 24 main categories (see the following page) and have been assembled on two-page data sheets which follow. The emerging problem of electronic waste has promoted the interest in exploring metal recovery from secondary sources under the umbrella of urban mining. This study presents the physical and chemical characterization of various components present in end-of-life laptops to help ascertain the sites of metallic values and develop sustainable and environment-friendly recycling. The recycling potential of a laptop is evaluated by sequential disassembly, separation, and characterization of components such as body (49.8 wt.%), printed circuit board (9.7 wt.%), hard disk drive (4.9 wt.%), and battery (12.4 wt.%). The printed circuit boards comprise metallic values, majorly copper (25 wt.%), tin (5.8 wt.%), and lead (3.1 wt.%). The precious metals (Au, Ag) with an economic advantage are abundantly present in electronic components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, and processors. Critical elements such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are detected in the discarded laptops' batteries and hard disk drives. The recycling potential representing the amount of material that can be recycled in various components, depending on the type, concentration, and purity, is determined in the range of 36–100%. On average, a unit laptop contains~ 386 g of Cu (14.45 wt. %), 49.73 g Co (1.86 wt. %), ~346 mg Ag, ~141.2 mg Au, ~650 mg of rare earth elements (Nd, Dy). This study presents a database for investigating integrated and economical recycling techniques from different components of a laptop, and an overall process flow is also proposed.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated combustion of lignite in domes-tic heating equipment to obtain information on equipment performance and to evaluate testing procedures. Three types of domestic heating equipment were tested, ranging from a hand-tilled, magazine-type space heater to a ram-type overfeed stoker. Lignite was readily burned in each of the three units under various test conditions. Burnoff rates determined by adding weighed charges to the magazine were found to be in error because of shrinkage of the lignite when only a portion of the magazine capacity was consumed during a test. More reliable burnoff rates could be determined by carbon-nitrogen balances. A hand-fired magazine-type space heater (Booker heater) was operated without the furnace attachment at efficiencies to 75 pct. One test series was run with minimum supervision under conditions encountered in actual household operation. No mechanical trouble was encountered.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of nickel from 36 deposits or districts in 16 market-economy countries (MECs), analyzing more than 95 percent of production in those countries. This study indicates the quantity of nickel available on the basis of net production costs and total costs with a 0-pct and a 10-pct discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR). Costs of production are expressed in dollars per pound of recovered nickel. The study also indicates sensitivities of the cost of production to energy, labor, and other factors. The studied deposits and properties contain approximately 33 Mmt of recoverable nickel. About 26 Mmt of nickel is potentially recoverable from laterite deposits, of which 4.5 Mmt can be produced at $2.50/lb or less with a 0-pct DCFROR. Approximately 7 Mmt of nickel is potentially recoverable from sulfide deposits, of which about 6.3 Mint could be produced at $2.50/lb or less at a 0-pct DCFROR. The price of nickel averaged above $6.00/lb in 1988. Sensitivity studies performed for both laterite and sulfide deposits indicate that the total cost of producing nickel from laterites is most sensitive to increases in energy costs and that the total cost of producing nickel from sulfide deposits is most sensitive to increases in labor costs; sulfides are also affected by changes in revenues from byproducts.

Steel mill electric arc furnace dust is a RCRA listed hazardous waste and its treatment and/or disposal are regulated by a complex set of rules. These regulations were originally established to encourage recovery and recycling of valuable components. For EAF dust, the more valuable constituents include zinc, lead, cadmium and iron. In fact, current trends are in the opposite direction, as the regulations have complicated the ability to commercialize new treatment technologies and created substantial roadblocks and liabilities for processors. As a result, almost half of the EAF dust generated in 1997 will be landfilled. The problems are compounded by difficult processing requirements, less than sterling examples of technology development and mechanical and operating problems. This paper explores some options to simplify the processing requirements and thereby easing difficulties in commercializing new technologies and expediting the recycling of recovered metals. Dust processing usually includes a simple step followed by two complicated steps. The simple step is fuming of heavy metals away from iron and other residues. The complex steps are (1) separating and purifying the heavy metals and (2) upgrading the iron residue. The first complex step can be simplified by producing an intermediate product that is amenable to processing by zinc refiners. This route benefits from the currently underutilized (by dust processors) resource offered by refiners, who have experience in and existing processes for separation and purification of zinc-based heavy metals. Various processes and their associated product options are reviewed and compared. Future directions for dust processing developments are suggested.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs for improving mine safety. Of particular interest to the Bureau are new and improved means for minimizing the hazard of fire which can be initiated by prolonged low energy electrical faults on trolley line systems. When a high energy fault occurs on a trolley line, wherein the current exceeds the magnitude normally drawn by legitimate loads, such as locomotives, then the circuit breakers at close-by power rectifier sets trip. Tripping of the breakers not only protects the equipment at the rectifier sets, but also disconnects the energy source from the fault and thereby minimizes the fire risk. However, the fault current is frequently of a level substantially below that required to trip the overload breakers. When the fault is a substantial percentage of the set level of the breakers, the energy dissipated by the fault is frequently sufficient to clear the system by rapidly burning itself clear. Such a fault is often short-lived and does not present as serious a fire risk hazard as a prolonged, much lower energy fault, wherein the energy level is too low to clear the system. The breakdown of a trolley line insulator, in which there was a 20 or 30 ampere leak, would represent such a fault or illegitimate load and a substantial fire risk.

Sibanye-Stillwater recently completed a partial sidewall rebuild on Furnace 1 at its Marikana smelter complex. The project involved matte taphole maintenance, which required the removal and subsequent replacement of 18 composite copper-graphite coolers and a section of the lower refractory sidewall. These composite copper-graphite coolers are a newly developed cooling design by Tenova Pyromet, and this rebuild project provided valuable insight into the performance of the composite coolers. The novel composite cooler design was implemented to serve as a safeguard against localised wear and corrosion in the furnace sidewall, particularly at the slag-concentrate interface, where chloride-accelerated sulphidation has been identified as a dominant degradation mechanism affecting the copper cooling elements. The composite cooler design is unique in that all the exposed sides of the water-cooled copper elements are fully encapsulated in graphite, which protects the copper from corrosive sulphur- and chlorinebearing gases and condensates. This sidewall cooling system was designed to improve corrosion resistance, stabilise freeze lining formation, and extend the campaign life of the furnace sidewall. The partial sidewall rebuild was executed during a planned maintenance shutdown with the main objective of replacing the matte taphole lintel bricks. This paper serves as a case study that compares and evaluates the operational performance of the composite coolers before and after the rebuild. The installation method is discussed to highlight the approach taken to ensure a sound installation while minimising downtime, as well as to present some lessons learned in the process.

THE application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of their bold and silver is no longer a novelty, but, as an example showing modern tendencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richness of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early hays seen unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and supplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that was too low in value to ship, but which it was thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill was not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling, ideas felt in the company's next installation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from ?sliming." The Bureau of Mines conducted a feasibility study and designed an operational system for consolidating waste coal sludge in a 110-acre pond by applying direct current between buried and floating electrodes. Consolidation would reduce the sludge to half its present volume, there-by extending the working life of the pond as well as creating a safe, stable impoundment. The project was conducted by the Bureau under an agreement with the Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), located near Centralia, WA. Part 1 of this report, published as Report of Investigation 8666 in 1982, covers the results of laboratory tests at the Bureau's Spokane Research Center and of a small-scale field test at WIDeO's coal preparation plant. Test results show the process is efficient and cost-effective when power is applied at low current density. Part 2 (this paper) describes a detailed design for an electrokinetic system to dewater WIDCO's 110-acre pond with a 27.4-acre electrode array. Densification of the inactive sludge pond will require 3.6 yr of treatment for a total cost of $1,450,000. The study and design are site specific, but design procedures and analyses are sufficiently detailed to serve as a guide for applying the process to any sludge pond.

"INTRODUCTION The work of using a system of air locks in unsealing a mine in Ohio following a fire probably was one of the outstanding jobs of its kind in a medium-thick coal bed.The fire in this mine, thought to have been of electrical origin, was discovered at about 1:30 a.m. on December 11, 1941. Forty-four men were working in the affected section at the time; 5 escaped unassisted, and 37, who had barricaded themselves, were rescued. The bodies of two men, who had succumbed after breathing fumes given off by the fire, were brought part way out of the mine before it became necessary to seal the mine.Direct attempts to extinguish the fire with water were abandoned when hazardous amounts of 'carbon monoxide, methane, and other inflammable gases were detected in return air passing through the main haulageway and escape-way of the mine.The mine was completely sealed on the surface at about 8 p.m. on December 12, 1941, with the two bodies remaining in the mine. Sixteen days after the mine had been sealed, the two bodies were recovered. This was accomplished by air-locking through a partitioned-off stairs compartment of a ventilation shaft. This work was done under adverse barometric and atmospheric conditions.A method for collecting representative air samples from the immediate fire area was used successfully by utilizing a vacuum pump on about 10,000 feet of existing water line that had been broken near the fire area.The immediate fire region was sealed, and confined to a relatively small area; the remainder of the mine was recovered, and operations were resumed February 9, 1942, or 59, days from the time of sealing the mine on the surface. This recovery was made by air-locking the main entries inby from the shaft and No. 2 right-face entries.The distance between air locks averaged about 500 feet, and as each new set of seal stoppings and air locks was completed, the old or outby seals were taken out and the area between was ventilated. In ventilating this area, it was often necessary to use line curtains to direct the air into dead-end places."

Corrosion behavior of the stir zone in a friction stir weld of dissimilar A12024/AZ31 alloys was investigated in the immersion test in distilled water (pH=6) for different times. Microstructures and the distribution of chemical elements were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Due to the difference in the corrosion potentials between A12024 and AZ31, the AZ31 alloy constituent in the stir zone was susceptible to the corrosion attack in the distilled water. The corrosion attack was found to occur in the narrow region of the AZ31 alloy adjoining the A12024 region, where there was a low ratio of anode-to-cathode surface area. The corrosion attack became more severe in the AZ31 alloy regions with increasing immersion time. The A12024 alloy region in the stir zone of the weld was protected by cathodic reactivity due to sacrificial anode AZ31 alloy.

This paper describing the mining practice and methods at the United Verde Extension mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series of papers in preparation by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods used in various mining districts of the United States. The United Verde Extension mine is a massive, high-grade deposit of copper sulphide containing some gold and silver and is mined almost exclusively by the conventional square-set method with some local modifications. About 450 men are employed underground and 1200 tons of direct smelting ore is produced per day. Figure 1 is a surface map of the Jerome district.

"Current Activated Tip-based Sintering (CATS) is a new process for the powder-based manufacturing of macro, micro and possibly nano-scale features and shapes. CATS enables the selective sintering of powders by localizing current activation conditions through an electrically conducting small tip (either in the stationary or moving mode). This paper presents preliminary experimental results on the CATS of reactive mixtures of Ni/Al powder to form nickel aluminide intermetallics. Preliminary investigations on the effect of current on the reaction characteristics are discussed.IntroductionSpark Plasma Sintering (SPS) has been the subject of intense research over the past decade [1,2, 3,4,5,6]. The process boasts remarkable advantages which include ultra fast heating rates (hence by-passing low temperature non-densifying sintering mechanisms), considerably lower sintering temperatures and shorter sintering times than achieved in conventional sintering. The process is however limited to the generation of simple geometries on the macro-scale. Recently three of the authors conducted work on a novel process ""Current-activated tip-based sintering (CATS)"" [7], where electric current is passed through a conducting tip that is placed or allowed to travel over a powder bed/compact to locally sinter powders. lD, 2D and 3D micro-scale sintered shapes can be generated with the possibility of 3D rapid prototyping on the macro/micro or nano-scale. Although CA TS of single phase powders has been conducted, the CATS of reactive powders has not yet been investigated.The Ni-Al phase diagram contains five intermetallic compounds, AhNi, AhNh, AlNi, AhNi5 and NhAl. Out of these intermetallics, NiAl and NhAl have received the vast majority of scientific and industrial interest [8]. NhAl can be formed by reaction synthesis, where nickel and aluminum reactant powders are heated to a reaction ignition temperature at which the reactant powders are converted to the intended intermetallic product. The reaction is exothermic which gives rise to considerable compact self heating, thus instantaneously raising the compact temperature by several hundred degrees which facilitates sintering [8]. Applying and electric current locally would not only provide for a rapid local reactive sintering, but would generate a number of intriguing scientific investigations. For example, of interest would be, how would the reaction propagation and microstructural/phase evolution be affected by the temporal and spatial temperature and current distributions."

The single six-in-line furnace of the Polokwane Smelter is the largest installed high-intensity furnace for platinum group metals (PGM) base metals sulphide smelting in the world. The furnace employs state-of-the art technology to deliver a planned throughput of 650 000 t/a dry concentrate at a design 68 MW power input.
