"Depuis 1906, près de 130 gisements ont été découverts dans la inture archéenne polymétallique (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag) du nord-ouest québécois. Une étude régionale du développement du potentiel inier est présentée puis détaillée pour quatre secteurs: Rouyn-Dranda, Val d'Or-Malartic, Bousquet-Cadillac et Matagami.L' analyse est conduite a l' aide des paramètres suivants: temps, méthodes de découverte, profondeur des gisements et poids métal. Les courbes cumulatives illustrant le nombre de gisements découverts fonction du temps montrent une forme générale en ""S"" dont les i'iations de pentes correspondent aux variations dans les taux de couverte. Initiation, réalisation et stabilisation des cycles de décourté sont ainsi mis en évidence. Deux ""bourns miniers"", de 1922 à 1945 et de 1955 à 1965, rassemblent 72 % des mines identifiées sqú à présent.La plupart des mines sont trouvées en subsurface: 90% ont leur mmet entre 0 et 100 mètres de profondeur dont 70 % entre 0 et 10 êtres. Dans le temps, il y a d' abord récolte par prospection puis par ophysique et enfin, développement progressif du potentiel en proeur avec des méthodes composites. Environ 80% du poids métal extrait de 4 camps miniers, couvrant 8% de Ia surface régionale quelques gros gisements dominent /a production.Ces données permettent de proposer une nouvelle approche pour analyse d' une région minière:La distribution de Ia profondeur des gisements en fonction du temps est indicatrice de la maturité d' un camp minier et peut servir a évaluer son potentiel résiduel.L’analyse des courbes en ""S"" permet d’extrapoler les taux de succès relies aux différentes méthodes et met en relief le rôle crucial de I' innovation dans I' exploration.ABSTRACTSince 1906, some 130 deposits have been discovered in the Archean polymetallic belt of northwestern Quebec. In this paper, the development of the mining potential is analyzed at the regional scale and for the following mining camps: Rouyn-Noranda, Val d'OrMalartic, Bousquet-Cadillac and Matagami.The analysis is based on the following parameters: time, discovery method, depth and weight of metal extracted. Curves showing the cumulative number of deposits discovered as a function of time are ""S"" shaped with slope variations corresponding to changing discovery rates. Initiation, realization and stabilization of discovery cycles are thus well represented. Two ""mining booms"", 1922 to 1945 and 1955 to 1965, account for 72% of the mines identified to date.Most exploitable orebodies have been found near the surface: 90 %have their top between 0 and 100 meters, including 70% between 0 and 10 meters. Early discoveries were made by prospecting, followed by geophysics while the progressive development of the depth potential is being realized by a combination of methods. Approximately 80 %of the metal extracted comes from four mining camps which cover 8% of the area, but most of the production can be allributed to only a few large deposits. Based on these data, a new approach to the analysis of a mining region is proposed:1) The distribution showing deposit depth versus time is indicative of the maturity of a mining camp and can serve to evaluate its remaining potential.2) The ""S"" curve analysis can be used to extrapolate the success rate of a specific exploration method and also stresses the crucial role of innovation in exploration."

Tabular uranium ore in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico, occurs as tabular layers of a urano-organic mixture suspended within host sandstones of the Morrison Formation. The intimate urano-organic association points to the organic material as the main ore control. Petrographic evidence indicates that the organic material was postdepositionally introduced into the host sandstone, probably as humic acids; however, the mechanism by which these acids precipitated from solution remains uncertain. A model, the cation scavenging model, is proposed in this paper to explain humic acid precipitation. The model, supported by evidence from regional alteration studies of the host sandstones, proposes that cations responsible for humic acid precipitation were scavenged from framework grains which altered during passage of the humic-rich fluids through the host sandstone. This process, coupled with the affinity of organic molecules for each other, caused flocculation of humic acids into tabular zones. The precipitated humic substances then continued to concentrate uranium to form the orebodies. The cation scavenging model requires only one solution, the humic-bearing solution, in the precipitation process. All cations necessary for humic acid precipitation originated in the host sandstones. This model contrasts with a previously proposed model--the brine interface or two solution hypothesis--in which it was proposed that a cation-rich brine introduced into the host sandstones provided the cations necessary for humic acid precipitation. The brine hypothesis has several drawbacks, one of which is unrealistic hydrologic reconstructions necessary to accommodate mineralization at various stratigraphic horizons in the Morrison Formation. Moreover, no mineralogic evidence exists to suggest a brine occupied the host sandstones at the time of mineralization. The proposed cation scavenging model for humic acid precipitation not only readily accounts for humic acid precipitation, but also is consistent with geologic observations and regional alteration studies.

Titanium is an alloying element used to refine grain size in steel and improve its physical and mechanical properties. In some stainless steels it is used to increase the resistance to corrosion by the precipitation of titanium carbides or carbonitrides. Its alloying performance is highly variable and depends largely on the stage of the secondary metallurgy process when it is added. Furthermore, the addition method (wire injection or direct addition) has a remarkable influence in secondary refining. This paper describes the tests performed in vacuum degasser (VD), with a highly compacted and encapsulated Ferrotitanium wire (FeTi HC). The yield of titanium in steel increased from 52% to 89%. Moreover, the consumption of the highly compacted Ferrotitanium was optimized.

The Montana Department of Transportation recently awarded a contract to construct a replacement bridge across the Clark Fork River in Heron, MT. Both abutments and both intermediate bridge bents were to be founded on 6-ft and 8-ft diameter, permanently cased drilled shafts with rock sockets, respectively. Two drilled shafts per substructure location were designed for a total of eight drilled shafts. The original design included 6-ft diameter drilled shafts at the abutments but the Contractor elected to submit a Value Engineering proposal that increased them to 8-ft diameter. On the basis of the subsurface exploration program, extremely challenging subsurface conditions were known to exist, including the potential presence of large boulders within the predominantly sand and gravel soil matrix. The successful bidder elected to use an oscillator to install the permanent casing to the top of bedrock, while simultaneously removing the spoils from inside the casing with a clam-grab. On seven of the eight shafts, this approach worked well. Unfortunately, on one of the shafts, the casing met refusal on one or more boulders encountered in the predominantly sand and gravel soil overburden. Following several attempts, and despite several variations of approaches, it was determined that the casing could not be advanced beyond the obstruction without unacceptable risks to the pile-supported temporary work trestle (i.e., loss of soil and reduction in pile capacity for the foundations supporting the work trestle). To mitigate the problematic drilled shaft, a unique solution was designed and successfully constructed. The solution involved the construction of seven 16-in diameter micropiles constructed within the confines of the obstructed casing. The micropiles were drilled to bedrock through the sand, gravel, and boulders and include rock sockets to satisfy axial design requirements. The micropile casing thickness, grade and grout strength were designed to provide adequate flexural strength as well as to satisfy other design requirements. Upon completion of the micropile installation, the upper portion of the drilled shaft above the boulders and within the permanent casing was constructed as usual. This paper discusses the difficult subsurface conditions at the site, the drilled shaft construction difficulties, and the design and construction of the micropile solution.

A Technique for the Preparation of Thin Films of Two-Phase Alloys Suitable for Use in Transmission Electron Microscopy In order to obtain foil sufficiently thin to permit transmission electron microscopy of two-phase alloys, particularly alloys in which the second phase is present as a very finely dispersed second phase, a technique has been developed to permit the thinning of these materials without either the large degree of pitting present in the electrochemical or chemical thinning process or the slicing of the second phase particles accompanying the mi-crotoming process. The metal or alloy to be thinned is first ground to initial sheet thickness of approximately 0.002 in. by hand grinding on 4/0 emery paper. This starting sheet of material is then reduced in cross section by an air-abrasion technique using an S. S. White dental abrasive unit. This unit consists of a supply of compressed CO, which provides a stream of high velocity gas impinging on the metal surface. Incorporated in the machine is a hopper-type of device in which fine abrasive particles of alumina are introduced into this high velocity gas stream. The abrasive particles are irregular in shape, approximately 30 across. If any particles are introduced into the sample during thinning, they should be readily observable. Impingement of this gas abrasive mixture on the metal surface causes rapid removal of the metal in a rather uniform manner. The rates of metal removal may be adjusted by both regulating the gas pressure and amount of abrasive material introduced into the gas stream. By moving the gas stream abrasive mixture slowly about the specimen or sheet surface, a large area of the sheet may be uniformly reduced to a thickness which is then suitable for use in transmission electron microscopy. Attendant with this metal removal is a result in cold working of the metal surface due to the impingement of the abrasive particles. The resultant foils, therefore, if made from materials which are desirable to view in the annealed condition, have to be subsequently heat treated. If the alloy from which these foils have been made has been initially heavily worked or deformed during manufacture, then no subsequent heat treatment is, necessary as in the case of the SAP-type alloys. Following this initial abrasive thinning technique, the material is then given a final electropolish which is just sufficient to remove any oxide which has formed on the metal surface during the abrasion technique. Care has to be exercised in this technique to make sure that none of the attendant problems associated with the chemical or electrochemical removal process are encountered. An electrolyte solution which has been found suitable for aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP materials is one containing 78 ml of perchloric acid, 120 ml of distilled water, 700 ml of ethanol, and 100 ml of butylcellosolve. The current density used is 1 amp per sq cm and a polishing time of 3 sec on each side of the foil is used. Extreme care must be used in choosing the current density and time to ensure that just the oxide film on the specimen is removed. Times or current density which are greater than this will lead to perforation of the film due to the removal of the A1,0, particles or a complete loss of the film due to complete solution of the matrix. Once the oxide film is removed the specimens must be kept in alcohol until placed in the microscope to prevent any further oxidation. Fig. 1 shows -an electron micrograph at X28,000 of a thin foil of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy prepared using this technique. The alloy consists of a matrix of commercial purity aluminum containing a very finely dispersed second phase of aluminum oxide flakes. In the electron micrograph, the dark patches are the aluminum oxide particles. The lighter portions of the micrograph are the aluminum matrix. Within the aluminum matrix, the dislocation structure of the alloy is clearly visible. This structure consists of intersecting twin boundaries and single dislocations. No abrasive particles were observed in the samples. In addition, thin films of commercial purity aluminum were prepared using this method and observed in the electron microscope. Here also, there was no evidence of abrasive particles introduced in the samples. The technique presented provides a satisfactory method for the production of thin films of aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloys for use in transmission electron microscopy where none of the usual thinning techniques appears to be satisfactory.

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. The Dominion Coal Board was created by Statute passed on July 17th, 1947, and was brought into effect by proclamation on October 21st, 1947. It is, consequently, a comparatively young body, having been in existence for only eighteen months. Before dealing with the constitution and duties of the Board, it may be well to answer the unspoken question of why it has been considered necessary to single out coal as one specific mineral requiring the continuous attention of a specially created permanent Board. In Canada, coal has been the neglected sister of the more spectacular minerals and it comes as a surprise co many to note that in 1948 the value of the coal produced in Canada was higher than that of any other mineral with the one exception of gold. Coal touches upon our daily lives in many different places of which the public are not generally conscious. As household fuel, it is a necessity of life in this northern climate; as a source of steam, it provides the heat for most of our industries; it is the food of the 'iron horse' chat shuttles our persons and our goods across the land; it is the source of power in many parts of the country; it is the chemical reducing agent chat, in our furnaces, transmutes the metallic oxides to the virgin metal. Coal is, in fact, the indispensable mineral chat forms the corner-stone of our present structure of industrial civilization. Is it, then, such an odd thing that the provision of an adequate supply of coal should be a matter of national interest or that measures should have been taken by government co provide for a constant watch, by a permanent Board, on the supply of co al? ? The Board is the result of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on coal which made a long and detailed study of the Canadian coal problem. It is composed of a permanent Chairman and six part-time members, most of whom have had intimate contact with various phases of the industry.

Traditionally, the choice amongst different upgrading techniques or in finding the optimum operating conditions for a given upgrading technology depends on whether one is looking at the grade or the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. In fact, the conclusions are not usually the same. This is because the best technique or optimum operating conditions for the highest grade are not the same as the conditions to achieve the maxi-mum recovery. Therefore, a unique measure that takes into consideration both grade and recovery is urgently needed. Finding such a measure is the objective of this paper. A proposed measure provides a selectivity index in the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is no selectivity and 1 is ideal selectivity. The index can be obtained by plotting the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recoveries of the components in products of separation and a running regression applying a one-parameter equation. The measure was applied to assess the selectivity of selective flocculation under different operating conditions when used as a sensitive upgrading technique for ultrafine ground ores. After applying the proposed selectivity measure in the case of the selective flocculation of ultrafine Egyptian iron ore without the addition of cations, it was found that the optimum conditions are pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.4 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.55. With the addition of cations, the optimum conditions were found to be pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 2 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.65. It should be noted that determining these optimum conditions using the traditional grade or recovery measures was highly ambiguous.

Mineral processing plants have complicated control strategies, with different control layers, multiple interacting loops, and feedforward disturbance rejection. The complicated control strategies mean that oscillations can arise and propagate to multiple loops and degrade the control performance. Oscillation detection techniques, such as the spectral envelope method, can be applied to detect oscillations within an observation window. However, the start- and end-points of the oscillations within the observation window cannot be identified with current oscillation detection techniques. The start- and end-points would be useful to label the oscillatory intervals, and then to use these labels to identify process conditions associated with the oscillation. In this paper, a pattern recognition technique, Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN), was used to label oscillation intervals. An oscillation diagnosis workflow combining spectral envelope and DBSCAN was demonstrated on an industrial case study of oscillations in a flotation circuit concentrate sump. The workflow successfully detected the oscillation, labelled the oscillatory intervals, and enabled accurate root cause analysis. The impact of time series features, namely the signal power ratio () and the oscillation frequency, on the performance and optimal parameter selection of DBSCAN was also investigated. Low oscillation frequencies and low s negatively affected the performance of DBSCAN. Additionally, the results indicated that higher oscillation frequency was related to higher optimal values for the lag parameter. A series of experiments examined silver extraction from a high-grade sulfide concentrate employing thiourea solution. Thiourea was initially oxidized with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to form formamidine disulfide (FADS) and used to extract silver from the as-received concentrate and after various pretreatments. Very low recoveries (~30%) were obtained with the as-received concentrate due to competitive cementation reactions by metallic iron and easily oxidizable copper phases. Over 80% Ag recovery was obtained when the concentrate was pretreated to remove this iron and copper. The results suggest that an oxidative acid pretreatment of this concentrates significantly improves silver recovery upon leaching with thiourea.

Adequate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in a feasibility study and in evaluation of design alternatives for mining and mineral processing projects. Inaccurate early cost estimation could lead to the elimination of investment benefits. However, this estimation is complex and time consuming because of data accessibility problems and consequently access to a rapid, up-to-date and accurate tool is desirable for carrying out cost estimations.This paper describes the development of models for estimating capital and operating costs for a jaw crusher, which is used as the primary crusher for a wide variety of mineral beneficiation plants, applying single and multivariate regression analyses, together with the design of experiment approach, based on principal component analysis. Explanatory variables include gape size, length of feed opening and power as numeric (quantitative) variables and toggle type (single or double) and the existence of extra heavy duty construction as categorical (qualitative) variables. The performance of each model has been investigated and comparing the estimated R-squared (R2) of each model, the best was selected and its validity examined. The cost models include the capital and operating costs along with the operating cost components. The results indicate that the suggested best cost model is sufficiently accurate for use in feasibility studies.

"The main objective of this study is to introduce the new Sandvik’s production cost-model within Crushing & Screening (C&S) technology. So far, there have been different ways of determining different production costs in the industry, however, the previously published and presented methods have not been very efficient in calculating the costs per product and metric ton. Accordingly, the current study has been planned and started in collaboration with Lund University to provide an accurate and easy to implement cost estimation program to determine the costs for crushing and screening plants worldwide.The proposed model has been adapted to fit the C&S processes of different rocks/ores fractions. The result is presented as cost per ton of the end product(s).Within this paper the cost estimation results for 3 different crushing and screening plants are presented based on the information obtained from the following sources: a) documents at Sandvik SRP, b) Sandvik’s crushing & screening internal/external machines/plants data and information, c) literature studies, including the use of Sandvik’s internal/external simulation and software programs, d), visiting the crushing and screening plants ,e) interviews, information systems’ data, and, f) testing and observations by ourselves.In order to improve the level of accuracy and the validity of the attained results, simplistic Monte-Carlo simulations have been used, where needed. The achieved results, so far, have proven the reliability of the model. The calculated cost estimations have shown an accuracy over 80% when they compared with real cost data obtained from plant practices.The current cost calculation model, will offer the possibility of:•,Calculating the production costs in proposed and/or existing C&S plant.•,Making detailed cost analyses for the end product(s) in proposed and/or existing C&S plants.•,Determining the profitability of each finished product when it’s required.•,Cost optimization by potentially cutting the cost for part of C&S plant with an existing plant practice"

"The present study is concerned with investigating the effect of chemical treatment on enhancing the HCl absorption capacities of coal burnt ash and slag. It was found that the HCl absorption capacity of coal burnt ash discharged from fluidized bed combustor was improved by hydration with water and 5% polyethylene glycol solution. This phenomenon was based on an increase of the specific surface area of treated coal burnt ash. The HCl absorption capacity of hydrated ash with polyethylene glycol solution was almost equivalent to that of standard CaO and Ca(OH)2. In particular, the specific surface area of hydrated ash with polyethylene glycol solution was found to be 19 m2/g, which was more than over eight times larger than that of raw sample. Hydrated slag treated with lON sodium hydroxide solution also showed high HCl absorption capacity, with highly improved surface area. It was found that the absorption capacity of slag for HCl depended on the treatment time, showing the maximum absorption capacity for 12 hours of hydration treatment.IntroductionA large amount of coal burnt ash, slag and dust are discharged from such industrial processes as coal combustion and metal refinery etc., and it becomes an serious problem to recover and diminish these solid wastes because of the shortage of dump sites and subsequent metal elution to the environment. Figure 1 shows the present situation of reutilization of coal burnt ash and slag in Japan [1,2]. It is shown in this figure that these solid wastes are recycled as materials in the fields of earthwork, agriculture and forestry etc. A part of these solid wastes, however, is still dumped to landfill. To decrease this dumped amount, the development of environmentally friendly reutilization technique for these solid wastes is of great importance."

"This work presents a method for the precipitation of cobalt sulfate by alcohols, specifically ethanol and methanol. The effect of the initial concentration of cobalt, the volumetric ratio of alcohol to cobalt sulfate solution, the addition of sulfuric acid and ammonia, and the effects of common ions on the precipitation percentage were investigated. The performances of ethanol and methanol were compared in terms of the precipitation percentage of cobalt sulfate, and explanations for different performances are offered. In the sulfate-based solution, the alcohol was shown to displace water ligands from the first coordination sphere of the cobalt(II) cations, which led to the precipitation of the cobalt ions as cobalt sulfate heptahydrate. SEM analysis revealed that the particle sizes of the powders produced by this method are smaller than those of commercially available cobalt sulfate. The scientific literature contains no data on the solubility of cobalt sulfate in ethanol. In this study, the solubility product constant (Ksp) for cobalt sulfate was experimentally calculated to be approximately 1.15 x 10-5.IntroductionCobalt sulfate, which is one of the most important compounds of cobalt, is used in the electroplating and electrochemical industries. The addition of cobalt sulfate to nickel-plating baths makes the treated metals brighter, harder, smoother and more ductile (Armstrong et al., 1988). It is also used as a desiccant for lithographic inks, varnishes, paints and linoleum, as well as in storage batteries, e.g., nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries (Kang et al., 2010). Cobalt sulfate is employed as a coloring agent in ceramics, enamels and glazes to prevent discoloration and as a copigment for the decoration of porcelain. In addition, cobalt sulfate has been used in animal feeds as a mineral supplement (Budavari et al., 1996; Kirk and Othmer, 1999).In the past, brewers used cobalt sulfate to prolong the life of beer foam (Kesteloot et al., 1968). Ranchers have dosed livestock with cobalt sulfate or used fertilizer enriched with this mineral to ensure that their animals obtained sufficient amounts of the trace mineral, which is essential to the production of vitamin B12. Cobalt sulfate has also been used in veterinary medication to prevent and treat cobalt deficiency in ruminants, which causes a reduction in feed intake and body weight, accompanied by emaciation, anemia and debility.Cobalt sulfate is a water-soluble bivalent cobalt salt. Cobalt sulfate heptahydrate dehydrates entirely at 420° C, and the dehydrated salt forms red monoclinic crystals."

For most geologists and miners the term "asbestos" refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for? uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The United States Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile. amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as "asbestos" if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions; length -greater than 5 micrometers, maximum diameter -less than 5 micrometers, and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer causing agent) it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment.

"The use of autogenous mills has become widespread, owing to their capacity and favorable capital and operating costs. Optimal operation of these systems is critical, given their high energy consumption and effect on downstream processing. A considerable effort has been spent over the years in the development of advanced control systems to achieve a better performance in this regard. However, despite significant advances, the problem still remains challenging, owing to the nonlinear behaviour of the system with respect to the mill variables, and, the unmeasured ore variability come from the mine.The mill load, in particular, can be seen as a state variable of the mill, which could be important for; modelling and control, and, important insights into the mill behaviour. In this investigation, time series cluster analysis was performed using online mill load measurements in order to identify the different control states of the mill. More specifically, this time series was divided into short non-overlapping segments. A distance matrix was set up for each segment and the information was captured by means of textural features, similar to that used in multivariate image analysis. These wavelet and grey level cooccurrence matrix features could subsequently be used to rapidly identify the normal operating conditions from the feed disturbances in the mill.In principle, the methods and models presented here, once suitably validated and calibrated, could be used in online process monitoring of autogenous mills. Chalcopyrite concentrate was flash-oxidised in a laminar-flow furnace in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres that ranged in composition from N2 to N2 + 50 vol% O2. Gas pre-heating temperatures were 500-1100 degrees C and four particle-size fractions were studied: 28-38, 38-44, 44-62 and 62-74 micrometres. The effect of the residence time of the particles on sulphur removal was studied in the range 0.1-0.35 s. Scanning-electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive analysis and back-scattered electron analysis was used to determine the morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Total desulphurisation was achieved under the most oxidising conditions. Particles were observed to undergo fragmentation during oxidation, the violence of this depending on the iron and sulphur contents and the original particle-size fraction. The melting and/or reaction stages of the particles under different conditions were studied in powder samples. Polished sections were examined to follow the development of porosity and the mineralogy of the particles. A model for the fragmentation process is described

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

Although lifetime estimates for sulfate reduction based on total substrate carbon typically range from 20 to 30 years, field and laboratory experiments showed that rates of sulfate reduction decreased over time as readily available organic material was consumed. When the rate of acid input exceeded the rate of sulfate reduction, alkalinity was removed from the substrate, pH decreased and metals increased. Output pH increased from 4 to over 6 after the system was shut down for several weeks and the rate of acid input was reduced. Successful long term treatment requires a design based on the input pH and the long-term organic decomposition rate.

Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.
