Investigou-se neste estudo, em escala de laboratório, o efeito do tempo de encharque de placas na dissolução de precipitados e nas propriedades mecânicas de aços microligados ao Nb e Ti, produzidos como chapas grossas. Para as temperaturas utilizadas, verificou-se que a aplicação de tempo de encharque de até 50 min, após o reaquecimento com tempo de permanência de 250 min, não exerceu influência significativa nas propriedades mecânicas dos aços investigados. Este resultado foi associado à dissolução total de precipitados finos (< 100 nm) durante a etapa de aquecimento e à desprezível dissolução durante a etapa de encharque de precipitados grosseiros, localizados principalmente no centro da espessura da placa, em regiões de microssegregação.

In order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the influence of major species, calcium and sulfate in process water on sphalerite flotation was investigated through Hallimond tube flotation, zeta potential, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements using sphalerite mineral sample. Assessment of process water species in flotation was done using deionized water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions in experiments. Hallimond flotation shows increased sphalerite float-ability in process water compared to deionized water, but no significant effect on the presence of calcium and sulfate ions in deionized water using isobutyl xanthate as a collector. The presence of calcium ions reduced the sphalerite?s negative zeta potential, while at higher concentrations, a charge reversal occurred, at about pH 11. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface-oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on sphalerite at pH 11.5 in deionized water, process water and water containing calcium and sulfate ions. These surface species do not influence xanthate adsorption.

OF THE methods that have been used for studying the chemical composition of coal, attack by reagents has not, in general, yielded much information. Most of the reagents used have been strong oxidants such as nitric acid or Schulze's solution. The use of a milder oxidizing agent, such as air at low temperatures, enables progressive changes in the character of the coal substance to be studied and thus helps toward an understanding of its constitution. British bituminous coals frequently have a banded structure. These bands (of four types) can be separated one from another and have been found to possess markedly different chemical characteristics, even when taken from contiguous portions of the same lump coal. It has been found convenient to give each of the ingredients of banded coal a distinctive name, more or less descriptive of its appearance, and the study of the chemistry of bituminous "coal" in England has resolved itself into a study of each ingredient separately. . The coal chosen for this work was taken from the Top Hard seam at East Kirkby colliery, Nottinghamshire, a detailed chemical analysis of which has been recorded by Baranov and Francis.1 The banded structure was well marked and the bands could readily be separated. The research was confined to the brilliant vitreous bands (vitrain), the dull hard bands (durain) and the "sooty partings" (fusain); for previous work had shown that the fourth type, to which the name clarain has been given, is intermediate in character, chemically, between vitrain and durain.

A simple mineralogical regression model is described, which was devised in order to help the flotation plant cope with rapidly changing headgrades and feed mineralogy. Minerals in the feed were determined by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction and compared with plant performance parameters and flotation reagent consumption rates, using regression analysis. A mineralogical regression model for predicting recovery served to motivate flotation plant personnel and also set standards whereby flotation performance could be measured. The reagent consumption model indicated in which direction any or all of five flotation consumption rates should be altered. All practically measurable parameters, even those showing poor or no correlation, were included in the model, provision being made for the continuous update of a batch of data of 30 lines. Compared with the method of multiple linear regressions, the r2 is poorer at 0,41 (versus 0,50), but the mean standard error of estimate for both methods is identical at ± 6,6 units. The regression model is simpler than the method of multiple linear regressions, and although the accuracy of prediction is not high (41%), the mineralogical regression model proved to be successful in practice. Flotation efficiency, as measured by the mean ratio of head to tails grade, for the 9 month period after the mineralogical regression model was implemented on an hourly basis, improved from 2,8 to 3,2, which is equivalent to an improvement in average flotation recovery of 5% relative.

A case study is presented that details the safety journey at a North American project involving two major contracts: a 1000 m shaft recovery and rehabilitation, and the development of a drainage gallery in a large open pit operation. In the early stages of the contracts, there were a number of incidents that created tension between the owner and contractor, which resulted in the contractor being placed on a final warning with almost imminent potential termination. As a result of this, it was agreed to initiate a focused safety recovery plan as a ‘last chance’.Over a period of two years, the engagement and consequent performance of the contractor was turned around, steadily working to set it up for success such that in one of the contract work areas, a record of ‘one year LTI (lost time injury) free’ was achieved. The journey involved the owner and the contractor teams working cohesively to educate all parties in the safety requirements and, most importantly, providing the context and understanding for certain requirements being put in place. Early on in the process, it was recognised that the owner team unknowingly was an impediment in that they did not fully understand the safety requirements and so was not able to lead the way for the contractor effectively. The journey to rectify the situation was supported and followed up by focused engagement with the project team, which generated a progressive improvement in a very challenging environment.In particular, the contractor turnaround was significant and of enough value for the contractor to ultimately export some of the safety systems from this site to other contract sites. Multidisciplinary investigations were completed to prove the availability of water resources for the proposed San Cristóbal silver-lead-zinc mine in the arid Altiplano of Bolivia. Surface water resources are scarce, of poor quality, and unsuitable for development. Therefore, hydrogeological reconnaissance targeted alluvial aquifers for development. Follow-up resistivity, refraction, and water quality assessments were used to prioritize areas with prolific production potential. Pumping tests and regional water balance analysis indicate an alluvial aquifer can sustain the required approximately 40 000 m3 per day production for the life of the mine and predict no significant negative environmental effects on local groundwater users and the environment.

Close economic cooperation was established among the countries in western Europe during the seventies. As a consequence, among others, a need for harmonized technical specifications for civil engineering works arose. Technical specifications for design and execution of building and civil engineering structures exist in most of the European countries. In some countries such technical specifications are part of the building regulations and in other they are independent codes of practice and standards. The works on the Eurocodes was initiated by the Commission of the European Communities about 1976. The Eurocodes are intended as common unified design codes for different load bearing structures constructed from different materials. They are also intended to cover design of geotechnical structures. They are established with a view to promote the free movement of goods and services within the member states of the European Community - the so called Internal Market - and within the member countries of the European Free Trade Association, EFTA by removing obstacles arising from different rules for calculation and design.

As an alternative to a million dollar, sensor based, computer dispatching system, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has installed a home¬made analog computer. The device is used in conjunction with a standard radio-dispatching system; it is inexpensive and very simple to build and operate. It enables the dispatcher to make near opti¬mum dispatching decisions and to identify all off schedule haulage trucks. Since installation, Cyprus Pima has experienced significant increases in pit productivity.

Aluminum production in the Pacific Northwest has a new potential for expansion and increased stability of operation. This new potential results from greater availability of power; lower freight rates on alumina and aluminum; good market prospects for the metal, including western aluminum market expansion following a decline in defense requirements in the 1950's; and possibility of developing bauxite deposits in the Pacific Basin as well as other mineral resources. INTRODUCTION This is a report of a special study by the Bureau of Mines of the primary aluminum industry of the Pacific Northwest. It outlines developments relative to the United States as a whole.

AKNOWLEDGE of the density of a pulp or suspension is frequently required by the millman, to whom fluctuations in density, which occur in all mill circuits, are of importance and interest. There ,are many w.ays currently in use to determine density and probably the most common method is to take samples of the pulp. The proper sampling of the material is no easy matter, particularly when the pulp contains a sand fraction which settles rapidly. For example, when filling a liter container from the overflow of a classifier, it is al-most impossible to fill the can completely and yet prevent overflow. If there is an overflow, the pulp remaining in the can invariably has an excess of sand and the indicated density will be too high. To surmount such difficulties, and to obtain a continuous indication of the density of a pulp at any desired depth, the simple indicator shown diagrammatically in Figure l was designed by the writer in 1951. "The height of a fractured zone due to high-intensity mining (HIM) plays a vital role in the safety analysis of coal mining under bodies of water. This paper described the characteristics of HIM. The processes of overburden failure transfer (OFT) are analyzed. The state of destruction transfers from a certain stratum to the upper stratum as face advance distance increases, and the processes of OFT are divided into two stages: transmission development stage and transmission termination stage. Through theoretical analysis, the limited suspension-distance and limited overhanging distance of each stratum are proposed to judge the damage of each layer. Based on this, the OFT criteria of fractured zone development are obtained. The mechanical model of strata suspended integrity and overhanging stability are established. Finally, a new method to predict the height of fractured zone due to HIM is put forward based on the processes of OFT, the limited suspension-distance, and the limited overhanging distance. Further, a HIM panel in the Datong coal mine is taken as an example. Theoretical methods are proposed, and engineering analogy is used to predict the height of the fractured zone, which is compared with in-situ measurements reported in the literature. The results show that the in-situ measurements for the height of the fractured zone are in close agreement with the theoretical calculation result. Therefore, the rationality and reliability of the theoretical method proposed to predict the height of fractured zone is verified.INTRODUCTIONThe height of the fractured zone (HFZ) due to the exploitation of coal is a key parameter for the safety analysis of coal mining under a body of water (Wenbing, Youfeng, and Hou, 2012). Accordingly, it is necessary to predict HFZ under the corresponding mining conditions before coal mining."

This paper documents an effort to explain cutterhead torque behavior observed during slurry pressure balance TBM tunneling through soft ground on the Los Angeles Clearwater project. AI machine learning and mechanics model-based learning was used to characterize cutterhead torque behavior including the TBM operating and ground parameters that influence cutterhead torque. Also, key parameters were from the slurry circuit data, including fines content, in-situ density, pore water fraction and solids content were included. The paper details what was learned using these new data-driven approaches as well as limitations with AI machine learning.

The limits of flammability and minimum autoignition temperature of a fuel are important elements in assessing fire and explosion hazards that may exist when using or handling the fuel. The limits of flammability define the range of compositions of the fuel gas or vapor mixed with an oxidant through which a flame, initiated by an outside energy source such as an electrical spark, can propagate. The minimum autoignition temperature (M.A.I.T.) is the lowest temperature at which the fuel vapors ignite spontaneously in a specified medium; in this case the ignition energy is supplied by the heat content of tae environment. This temperature is also referred to as S.I.T. value by some authors. Because the autoignition of a fuel also depends on the time interval during which the fuel is subjected to heat, ignition delays are significant. Ignition delay is defined here as the total time elapsed between the introduction of the liquid fuel into the oxidizing atmosphere and the appearance of a flame. This time interval includes both the physical and chemical processes leading to ignition. The ignition delay is usually maximum at the M.A.I.T, and decreases as the temperature of the system is increased. The flash point and the fire point are also useful in assessing the fire and explosion hazards of a fuel. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which saturated, flammable fuel vapor-air mixtures are formed at atmospheric pressure and, therefore, it is essentially the lower limit of flammability

Grinding media consumption is a major cost variable in industrial mineral comminution circuits. Specifically, industrial SAG media consumption results from a combination of surface abrasion wear, media breakage, surface spalling and rejection size from the mill. Three main consumption rates; weight of media consumed per time, per kWh and per weight of ore ground are defined and compared. Recent industrial data has provided an opportunity to relate consumption in terms of weight of media consumed to weight of ore ground (g/tonne) and weight of media consumed per kWh of energy consumed (g/kWh) with SAG specific grinding energy consumed (kWh/tonne). Using relationships developed from this data it is possible to project SAG media consumption in future mineral comminution circuits.

With the dramatic increase in world demand for basic raw materials, open pit mining is proceeding at an unprecedented rate. A viable demand is the ever tempting Siren's song for increased production or new facilities. When the Siren's lure is viewed against the panorama of today's world economic milieu the concomitant Scylla and Charybdis are seen in the form of high capital cost and high operating cost. If the economic realities of present day open pit mining are to show a proper return on investment, a clear and penetrating eye must be cast upon the area of mine planning. This paper deals with the problem of overburden removal. In almost every open pit mining operation overburden removal is a significant part of the capital cost and operating cost of the total operation. This paper deals with a new and unique method to affect economical overburden removal. Well known to all are the parameters surrounding draglines, shovels, and bucket wheel excavators. All of these machines require a reasonably stable soil to support them and the shovel and bucket wheel excavator require a reasonably stable bank in which to operate. Their reliability, portability and rate of production per dollar of invested capital are good.

Prolonged laboratory and limited pilot plant tests have shown that the Bureau of Mines buffered S02 -H2S process is capable of removing 95 to 99 percent of the S02 from industrial waste gases. Most of the S02 is converted to elemental sulfur; only about I percent converted to sulfate The process comprises (1) washing the flue gas to remove particulates and S03, (2) absorption of the S02 in citric acid or other carboxylate solution, (3) reaction of the loaded solution with H2S in a closed vessel to precipitate the absorbed S02 as elemental sulfur, and (4) separation of the sulfur from the regenerated solution by oil flotation and melting. Two-thirds of the molten sulfur is converted to H2S for use in the sulfur precipitation step by reacting sulfur vapor with natural gas and steam in the presence of an alumina catalyst. The chemistry and mechanism of the process are described, initial laboratory and pilot plant data are summarized, and second-generation laboratory operation and pilot plant design are reviewed. Preliminary cost estimates are presented for recovering sulfur from copper smelter gas, powerplant flue gas, and Claus plant tail gas.

Binary alloys of molybdenum and tungsten were prepared by the Bureau of Mines in laboratory-scale experiments by hydrogen reduction of their vaporized hexafluorides. Near-optimum deposition parameters were determined, and the nature of the deposited alloys was investigated. Dense, homogeneous alloys were codeposited between 650° and 750° C with a reduction efficiency of more than 75 percent. The alloy composition was uniform when the hydrogen ratio in the gas feed mixture did not exceed 3 times the stoichiometric requirement. Regulating the proportions of the metal hexafluorides in the gas feed provided a large degree of control over the composition of the deposit. Hardness of the deposits varied directly with the proportion of excess hydro,,,, in the gas feed and with the weight-percent of tungsten in the alloy. Hardness was not affected by deposition temperature over the range 650° to 750° C for specimens of similar composition. Extreme brittleness and unsuitable physical shapes of the alloys prevented tensile strength measurements.

Mineral resources have been identified at two properties in the Ten takes RARE II area (table 1). Commodities consist of copper and silver. The deposits, in the northwest part of the study area, are hydrothermal and associated with fissure veins that developed along northwest-striking faults within the Precambrian Purcell Lava. In addition to the identified resources, there is high potential for additional copper-silver resources at these properties and moderate potential for copper-silver-lead-zinc-bariun resources at five others (table 2) in the portion of the study area that is underlain by the Purcell. There is no evidence that significant mineralization occurred in strata above or below the Purcell.

The objective of study of climatic conditions in underground mines is to create a working environment suitable for normal development of operations. Disregarding the fact that the development of equipment and technology, especially during the past decade, made the work in underground mines much easier, it is observed, according to the number of professional publications, that increasing attention is devoted to the study of climatic operating conditions in mines of many countries. This indicates that the climatic operating conditions are closely connected with productivity, and in turn with mine production profitability, in addition to the protection of manpower health and working capabilities. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic conditions of operation implies increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow rate, resulting in impeded heat exhange between human organism and working environment. As known, above phenomena are present in deep underground mines where the heat problem exceeds the-problems related to other features of natural conditions of mining. On the contrary, unsuitability of climatic operating conditions in mines with shallower mining depths is manifested by inadequate heat, particularly during the cold winter period. The two stated aspects of unsuitable climatic operating conditions are not solvable only by mine ventilation, so the former case requires cooling and the later one heating of the air used to ventilate the pit, or part there of where the phenomena are manifested. Study of climatic operating conditions in mines is, due to the number of factors involved, a complex and time consuming task, and this was, among others, one of the reasons for inadequate study of these problems in many mines. However, it is evident that further development of mine production imposes the need to make the climatic operating conditions in mines similar to those existing in other activities, where increasing attention is being devoted to the improvement of these conditions. Development of mining industry in Yugoslavia, particularly over the past decades, caused several of our mines to approach mining depths where the heat regime has a major influence on climatic operating conditions. This imposed the need to determine and investigate heat regime parameters, especially those that cause unsuitable operating conditions. The results of such investigations in the case of the deep part of Lead and Zinc Mine "Trepca" - Stari Trg are briefly reported in this paper.

The rich Tiller seam in southwest Virginia averages 10 to 15 ft in thickness. But because it is separated into two benches, mining engineers for years considered it neither physically nor economically feasible to mine. Profitable recovery of this coal has been made possible only by: full-seam mining with automatic machines; and the largest and most highly automated coal preparation plant of its kind-a plant ten stories high which washes, screens, and dries at the rate of 1500 tph, and produces both metallurgical and steam coal products. The Moss No. 3 preparation plant of Clinchfield Coal Co. Div. of Pittston Co. is located at Clinch- field, Va., only a short distance from the 450-tph Moss No. 2 plant, and was designed, built and erected by Link-Belt Co.
