"PREFACEA general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed.Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township.The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area."

"The worldwide demand of ores and the depletion of the high-purity deposits make it necessary to recover ores in increasingly finer size fractions in the feed material. The flotation technology of more than 40 years old plants was not able to recover the ultra fine material. Those slurry tailings ponds now have the chance to be re-processed with PNEUFLOT® technology.The bubble sizes of different flotation technologies have a huge influence of the results especially regarding the recovery of the ultra fine particle sizes.PNEUFLOT® technology of HUMBOLDT WEDAG Coal & Minerals Technology GmbH in Germany was applied to ultra fine Phosphate, Copper and Platinum ores. The results will be presented in this paper.Conventional technology like agitator flotation has its limits in the flotation of fines due to turbulences in the cell. The position of the agitator influences the recovery of the fines. A deep impeller generates a higher froth zone. This helps to catch the medium fines. Due to the static head of the slurry inside the cell, compressed air is required for such cell designs.Column flotation is well known for a good selectivity without having in the first cell a good recovery. This leads to invest in several cleaning stages to reach an acceptable recovery. Further more, compressed air is required to generate the air bubbles to the flotation process, which are much bigger than with PNEUFLOT® technology applied.INTRODUCTIONHigh metal prices are actually the basis to invest in poor deposits or deposits with very fine intergrown ores which have to be milled down to ultra fine powders less than 60 micron. The liberation grade has to be determined by a mineralogical analysis. Polish sections have to be prepared and interpreted by using of a microscope. Figure 1 and figure 2 are showing polish sections of a platinum-nickel ore from Petchenga Nickel at Zapolyarni Mine in Russia. The head grades for rich ore are for copper between 0.05 – 0.15%, for nickel between 3 – 7% and for platinum group minerals approx. 0.15 oz/t. With an efficient flotation technology it can be upgraded to 20 oz/t."

"The paper covers the design and implementation of an industrial dense medium cyclone plant for carbonaceous iron ore, the proving of efficiency as well as the development of a predictive model for plant control. The VA Erzberg GmbH mines about 12 Mio.t of carbonaceous rock ore at the “Steirische Erzberg”. Due to increased demand of the Austrian steel plants, the production of ore concentrate was raised by 30 % up to 3.0 Mio t/a during the last 5 years. One of the projects to realize the increase in capacity at improved concentrate quality was the implementation of a dense medium cyclone plant for the fine size fraction – 8 +1 mm replacing the former dry permanent magnetic drum separators. By physical separation the siderite variety “spateisenstein” (42% Fe) of a density of 3,8 g/cm³ is separated from ankerite (10 – 17% Fe), the second iron bearing carbonate with a density of 3,2 g/cm³, dolomite, calcite and silicate bearing schists. The feasibility of the process was proven by the test results obtained from a test rig, that was constructed and operated in close cooperation between the Chair of Mineral Processing, Montanuniversitaet Leoben and VA Erzberg GmbH. The density separation surpassed the efficiency of magnetic separation clearly shown by •- values. The plant performance tests (capacity 120 t/h) verify the cut densities defined by Tromp T50 -values and the assigned efficiency found in the pilot tests at varied settings of media density, pressure drop, cone angle and apex diameter. The test rig as well as the final process will be presented. In order to create a tool to predict the performance of the DMS in the centrifugal field at various settings for varying feed composition the experimental results from size and density testing are analyzed in a modified way to obtain physically justified, smooth approximations for the performance curves. Models developed on coal washing plants are checked for their validity at increased densities."

"The use of load and resistance factor design (LRFD) is well documented since the 1960s for structural applications when it was first adopted into the American Concrete Institute Building Code in 1963 and was established for geotechnical applications by the Danish Geotechnical Institute about the same time under the name of Limit State Design (LSD).The Federal Highway Administration required all federally funded projects to use the LRFD method by 2007. Due to this funding requirement, recent LRFD research for geotechnical applications has focused on common bridge foundations (i.e., driven or drilled shafts), resulting in good documentation for design using these methods. Unfortunately, the practicing geotechnical engineer does not intuitively know how to create resistance factors for deep foundations systems that have design methodologies and installation techniques significantly different from driven or drilled shaft foundation systems.Helical anchors typically use semiempirical methods for preliminary capacity design and a torque correlation methodology during installation to verify required capacity. Here we provide basic information on the LRFD methodology for helical anchor design. Additionally, the First- Order Second Moment (FOSM) method is applied to a previous helical anchor study (Hoyt and Clemence 1989) to determine resistance factors for an ultimate tension capacity strength limit state.MethodologyThe concept of the LRFD method is to establish factors for both the load and resistance that account for uncertainties using probability theory. The factors increase the nominal load and/or decrease the nominal resistance such that the probability of failure is an acceptable value. LRFD also accounts for the effects of load combinations (dead, live, seismic, wind, etc.) by determining the probability of the combined occurrence. Bulk and differential laboratory flotation tests have been carried out using a synthetic mixture of chalcopyrite and molybdenum ore. In addition to boiling and roasting, six different depressants are tested so that the best conditions of separation can be identified. These reagents include sodium cyanide with and without zinc sulfate, potassium ferrocyanide, sodium hydrosulfide, arsenic Noke's reagent, and sodium sulfide. The data indicate that most of these reagents are effective chalcopyrite depressants. However, sodium hydrosul fide can be used preferably if economic, operational, and environmental factors are taken into consideration.

DURING the past 25 years, mining engineers have seen the development of a multitude of specialized engineering curricula in the mineral industry field. Bachelor degrees are now !ranted in the fields of mineral dressing petroleum engineering, geological engineering, fuel technology, and many others. These fields were all, previously considered to be part of a mining enginieer's work and elementary phases of them were included in mining engineering curricula. Their emergence has left some mining engineers with the fear that nothing will he left for a purely mining engineer to teach, or that mining engineering graduates will be unable to complete in any of these fields with the more specialized students and thus will have neatly restricted employment opportunies. A secondary reaction has been that if students who began to say that the pining engineering curriculum taught everything but mining, since so many of :he subjects that had always been udedAuded in the mining engineering curriculum now were fields in their own right.

Regardless of how a mineral deposit in first discovered or by whom, any mining enterprise based upon it must pass through a preliminary stage of exploration. The common understanding of ?exploration? among mining engineers is well-expressed by Jackson and Knaebel:3/ Exploration work ranges from that performed by the individual prospector employing only the simplest tool, and equipment to elaborate campaigns involving the expenditure of largo stuns of money end the use of churn- car diamond-drilling equipment, large test-pitting crews, or sometimes a regular mining organization. In any event, the object is to determine as accurately as possible, with the funds available, the size, shape, and other characteristics of the ore bodies and their average value or grade.

To minimise ore dilution induced by blast movement in surface mines it is necessary to quantify such movement. This will allow more accurate location of the grade boundaries on the surface of a blasted rock pile before excavation. A method has been developed and tested for measuring accurately the direction and magnitude of subsurface blast movement, using a caesium vapour gradiometer and a real-time, differentially corrected global positioning system to locate the pre- and post-blast positions of magnetically enhanced target objects placed in blastholes inside a bench. The procedure does not necessitate disturbance of the blasted rock and the movement information is available sufficiently quickly to allow for modification of the selective mining boundaries for each surveyed blast. It was found that the maximum depth of target detection was 18 m and the overall accuracy was plus or minus 1 m horizontally and 1.2 m vertically

The Bureau of Mines has initiated a program to determine the availability of land for mineral exploration and development in Alaska. Researchers involved in this pro-gram are comparing land availability, based on ownership and government policies and regulations, to the distribution of known mineral deposits and terranes. This report on southeastern Alaska presents the findings of the first of six regional studies that will cover the State. The study consisted largely of data compilation and analysis using various mapping techniques. Summary land availability data are presented on copies of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangles at a scale of 1:500,000. Five categories of land availability were identified: open to mineral exploration and development (approximately 9.4 million acres, or 38% of the 24.8-million-acre study area), open but with possible use restrictions (4.2 million acres, or 17%), selected (0.5 million acres, or 2%), patented (0.74 million acres, or 3%), and formally closed to mineral exploration and development (10 million acres, or 40%). Of the 1,187 known mineral deposits in the study area, approximately 38% are on land in the open category. Mineral terranes comprise approximately 6.7 million acres, or 27% of southeastern Alaska. Approximately 34% of these terranes are on open land.

The miscibility gap in the Au-Ni system has been determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy, with used as a probe. The phase boundaries were determined from the compositional dependence of both the isomer shift and Curie temperature. X-ray diffraction measurements were also used to confirm the Mossbauer results. 1 HE purpose of this research is to demonstrate the application of Mbssbauer spectroscopy to the determination of phase boundaries and to redetermine the miscibility gap by an independent and novel technique. The techniques evolved in this study are readily applicable to other polyphase systems and are generally as quick and accurate as the more conventional methods, e.g., metallography, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and so forth. To be sure, not all polyphase systems will lend themselves favorably to Mijssbauer investigations, but this is a problem met in the use of conventional methods as well. The Mbssbauer spectrum responds to a different set of physical parameters, and consequently provides an entirely independent method of analysis. It is especially useful if the system has either a ferromagnetic or an antiferromagnetic transition. The Au-Ni system was selected because alloys containing more than -60 at. pct Ni become magnetically ordered at low temperatures; also the miscibility gap is quite well established (see Ref. 7 for a compilation of pertinent references, also Fig. 11, and thus provides a reliable test of this novel procedure. As Fe is the most commonly used Mijssbauer isotope, there exists a wealth of information concerning its behavior in iron-containing alloys and compounds. However, as yet there have been relatively few experiments using it as a probe to investigate nonferrous systems. By choosing a nonferrous alloy system, we are able to demonstrate that its use is not restricted to systems containing iron as one of the major constituents. Wertheim and ~ernick' have used the same method to investigate Cu-Ni, and demonstrated that one can obtain a systematic variation in the isomer shift and magnetic hyperfine field. However, we believe this to be the first time these techniques have been used to establish phase boundaries. Two hyperfine interactions were measured and used to determine the phase boundaries, viz., the magnetic hyperfine splitting and the isomer shift which in this alloy system are both strong functions of composition. Calibration curves were established based upon single-phase solid solutions obtained by quenching from temperatures well above the maximum of the miscibility gap, see Fig. 1. Solid solutions containing 25, 50, 65, 75, 85, 92, and 96 pct Ni as well as pure nickel were used in the calibration procedure. Fig. 2 shows the Curie temperature, TC, and the isomer shift, v,, as determined from the Mbssbauer spectra, and variation in lattice parameter as determined by X-ray diffraction, as functions of composition. The compositions of the two-phase systems quenched from temperatures within the miscibility gap are obtained by comparing their respective values of TC and v0 with the calibration data. Silica reacts with cryolite at 1010°C in two stages. The first stage is the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate of composition consistent with the mineral jadeite (Na20.AI20s.4Si02). The formation proceeds by atleast two different reactions. Formation of alumina or an aluminosilicate proceeds to its limiting value in the first 30 min while the formation of jadeite proceeds at a steady rate until quantitative conversion is achieved after 150 min. The net overall reaction can be expressed by the equation 6 Si02+2 Na3AlF6? (Na20.AI20s.4Si02) +2 SiF4 +4NaF.The second stage involves a slow reaction that proceeds with the evolution of a little SiF4, The net result is the formation of sodium aluminosilicates that are soluble in 30 per cent AlCIs-HCI solutions. While this could be explained by disproportionation of jadeite to form albite (Na20.Al203.6Si02) and nepheline (Na20. AI203.2Si02), it is more likely that it is due to further but limited reaction between the oxides and fiuoroaluminates.

THE president of a large smelting and refining company once telegraphed me that they had acquired extensive mining interests in northern Peru and requested me to inspect their properties as it would be necessary to install a system of aerial tramways between their mines and treatment plant. The concentrator was about 50 mi. from the coast, reached by a fairly good motor road. From the concentrator an aerial tramway would he required, about 6 mi. long, to their first property, a gold and silver mine. The lower terminal of the tramway was at an elevation of 4000 ft. and the mine at an elevation of 9500 ft.

"INTRODUCTIONNo. 1 Queens Rd was an existing 10-storey office building founded on large pad footings. This project involved the construction of a 6-level, 15m (50-ft.) deep basement excavated immediately adjacent to the existing building and also beneath the existing footprint of the Southern end of the building. The total perimeter of the new basement was to be approximately 200m (656 ft.) all with a retained height of 15m (50 ft.). It was also proposed to add a further 5 storeys to the building. Approximately 18 of the existing columns supporting the 10-storey building were to have the applied column load diverted from the existing foundations at ground level onto the new piles or basement raft 15m (50 ft.) below.The geotechnical profile consisted of fill for the top 1.5m predominately comprising of clayey sand with a high gravel content from 1.5m to 9m (5 to 30 ft.), a medium dense to dense clayey sand and then below was a sandy clay extending to 15m (50 ft.) ranging from stiff to very stiff. From 15m on completely to extremely weathered siltstone was encountered. The groundwater was measured at 9.5m (31 ft.) below the natural ground surface.DESIGN BRIEFThe existing building columns were founded on large pad foundations up to 4.4m (14.5 ft.) square, founded on the dense clayey sand. These pads would require temporary support to enable the excavation to proceed beneath them. Upon completion of the excavation under the pads new columns were to be constructed joining into the existing columns to transfer the load onto the new raft slab, 15m (50 ft.) below. The existing 10 floors were to be refurbished. It was planned to undertake all the temporary support and transferring of loads while the structure above was only able to provide a dead load. It was decided that any movement of the building would have minimum impact on a skeleton structure. During the temporary support of the columns, movements due to construction activities had to be monitored to understand any potential stresses in the structure above.The original design required beams to be installed under the pads and supported at either end by temporary piles that were to be founded below the level of the proposed excavation. (Refer to sketch 1). Wagstaff Piling considered that this methodology had difficulties in construction at all stages and did not provide facility for transfer of the load without significant movement of the structure above. Wagstaff Piling revised the design to attach beams to the columns above the pads using shear collars. (Refer to sketch 2). These beams supported on the temporary piles could then be jacked upwards to remove loads off the pads. This would enable removal of the pads with minimal movement of the 10-storey building above. "Cyanide is a leaching agent for precious metals commonly used in gold ore processing. Cyanide exists in various forms (including free, complexed as weak or strong complexes, and as ions such as cyanate and thiocyanate), so its detection, speciation and analysis in processing or environmental samples can be complex. This paper will review best practices for cyanide sampling and preservation in the field, interferences and pretreatment methods required prior to sample analysis and analytical methods that are used for cyanide species. Titrimetric, flow injection ligand exchange, spectrophotometric, colorimetric, potentiometric, amperometric, and chromatography techniques will be discussed and their chemistries, detection limits, advantages and limitations will be described.INTRODUCTION Cyanide is well known to be an extremely toxic species. Accurate cyanide measurement in effluent from mines is critical from an environmental perspective. Its measurement is also an important control parameter in the recovery of gold using cyanidation. Cyanide chemistry is diverse and complex, and cyanide analysis can be challenging as a result of and because of limitations in understanding of analytical methods. Various chemical mechanisms can form or destroy cyanide, and the sample matrix or preservation chemicals can also affect analytical results. These interferences make the collection of reliable cyanide measurements challenging and can start as soon as the sample is collected, during laboratory pre-treatment and during analysis. This paper reviews different methods of cyanide measurement. The basic chemistry of cyanide, best practices for sampling and preservation, as well as various methods of analysis will be discussed.CHEMISTRY The complexity of cyanide chemistry is well known (Beck, 1987; Delgado, Botz, Bucknam, Milasovljevic, & Staley, 2008; Botz, Milosavljevic, & Ward, 2013) and is attributed to the ability of cyanide to undergo: •,Volatilization •,Precipitation •,Adsorption •,Complexation with metals •,Oxidation to cyanate, ammonia, or cyanogen chloride •,Reaction with sulfur or sulfide minerals to form thiocyanate •,Redox reactions leading to the formation of cyanogen and cyanate •,Redox reactions (of some cyano complexes) •,Photochemical reactions (of some cyano complexes)"

During the measurement of contact angle, a misty band was observed near the substrate. Hsien-Nan Ho and Shinn-Tyan Wu thought this was because the oxygen atoms on the interface migrate to the droplet surface to form an oxide band near the substrate. But from our experiments misty band appeared before the drop reach to the substrate. Theoretically speaking, the oxygen partial was the same everywhere in the vacuum furnace. So there was no condition to provide enough oxygen forming oxide. This appearance would be explained more reasonably with the optics principle. Most reflected light would be absorbed by the substrate and the light cannot reach the observation area, so the misty band formed.

"The demand for barite has increased greatly in the last 10 years, especially during World War II. Depletion of oil reserves and subsequent increase in deep drilling created a heavy demand by the oil industry for barite to be used as drilling mud. The great increase in demand for barite gave impetus to the development of a, deposit of impure barite near, Magnet Cove in Hot Spring County, Ark.The critical condition of the national barite supply early in 1944 led the War Production Board to recommend that the Bureau of Mines attempt to prove the existence of a large reserve tonnage of barite in the Magnet Cove area and arch for new deposits. To carry out this program, the Bureau explored on newly reported. Barite deposits in southern Montgomery County, Ark. The Gap Mountain, Fancy Hill, and Sulphur Mountain barite deposits were investigated. Eight diamond core-drill holes and 1,336 linear feet of surface trenching were completed, and barite samples obtained were analyzed, A study of the Montgomery County barnse district indicates that the lenticular bodies of barite replace a favorable host rock near the base of the Stanley shale formation. Barite is exposed along the side of anticlinal mountains where erosion has truncated the beds on the limbs of the associated synclines. An appreciable amount of barite suitable for commercial use has been indicated by trenching and core drilling. The Gap Mountain and Fancy Hill deposits are controlled by the Magnet Cove Barium Corp. and Baroid Sales Division of National Load Co., respectively. The ore is similar to that of the Magnet Cove area and is amenable to concentration by a flotation process. Mining of these deposits had not been begun by the time the Bureau completed its exploration project."

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between different milling procedures, viz. a ball mill and an IsaMill respectively, and the flotation performance of the different mill products. Two ores were used, viz. a base metal sulphide (BMS) and a platinum group mineral (PGM) UG2 ore. Flotation was used as a diagnostic to investigate whether the different milling procedures may have different effects of the floatability of the particles. The present study is part of a research programme investigating this question using a wide range of comminutiondevices and procedures. Similar particle size fractions from the different milling procedures were used in the flotation tests. The particles were characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology (using scanning electron microscopy and image analysis software) and rheology tests. The results have shown that in general when comparing similar feeds to flotation in terms of equivalent particle size distributions as indicated by the d80 value, the ball mill generally yielded better recoveries and grades in the case of the BMS and lower chromite recoveries in the case of the UG2 ore compared to the IsaMill. No significant differences were observed in the morphological or rheological characteristics of the particles subjected to the different milling procedures. Although the results appear to indicate that IsaMilling is less advantageous than ball milling in terms of the flotation performance for the two ores studied it should be emphasized that these results do not take into account the relative advantage which IsaMilling has over ball milling in terms of direct and indirect energy consumption and GHG emissions nor, most importantly, does it consider the platinum group element recoveries in the case of the UG2 which may have increased significantly as a result of the finer grind which the IsaMill produces after 4 passes compared to the ball mill after 64 min. Such results which will be reported is due course may show that the greater liberation expected after IsaMilling of the PGMs outweighs any disadvantages indicated in this study.

"The objective of this investigation was to study the reaction mechanisms during the reduction of iron oxides in the presence of calcium chloride and carbon black as a simplified iron segregation process. The gas phase was analyzed by mass spectroscopy and the solid reaction products were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Mass spectroscopy, combined with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, revealed the presence of several gases at elevated temperatures over time, and the scanning electron microscope in combination with energy dispersive X-ray analysis illustrated the growth of a metallic iron phase on or near the carbon substrate. The results correlated well with similar copper and nickel segregation processes, but also introduced new insights that challenge the simplicity of the current models. The formation and transport of gaseous iron species to the carbon substrate in the presence of steam and hydrogen were evident during the reduction process that was studied; however, there is more happening at a mineralogical level, based on evidence of a liquid phase resulting in substantial growth due to an apparent fluxing effect created by the calcium chloride.These results help to better explain the chemical reactions and, in turn, the thermodynamics and kinetics of iron segregation processes related to the beneficiation of low grade complex iron ores. The results are also applicable to the production of metallic iron and concentrated titanium dioxide from ilmenite ores. The benefit of this process is that it allows ores in which the iron minerals are intimately associated with gangue minerals to be processed in circumstances where conventional mineral processing techniques are unsuitable or incapable of upgrading the material."
