AMERICAN participation in the World Engineering Congress in Japan will be generous. Nearly seventy papers have been prepared and for- warded for printing and the A. I. M. E. is well represented in the list. At our San Francisco meeting four of these will be briefly reviewed by the authors for the benefit of those who are unable to go on to Tokyo. They constitute a group dealing with the present economic status as seen by engineers of the world's iron, coal, petroleum and non-ferrous metals. Messrs. Leith, Smith and Tryon, Requa, and Probert have written papers that constitute a notable series. Messrs. Jeffries, Sweetser and Kinney, and other Institute members have written papers dealing more closely with technologic progress. The latest list of delegates and members is printed below, names of A. I. M. E. members being set in italics.

One of the safety and health research programs of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center was the evaluation of technology that will provide remote-controlled operation of mechanized equipment in underground room-and-pillar mining. The purpose of this effort was to enable workers to be located away from the hazardous and unhealthful coal extraction area (the face). As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies were developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate, reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After investigating several different types of navigation sensors, researchers selected the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System (INS) as showing the most promise. It was installed on a continuous mining machine at our Mining Equipment Test Facility. Extensive testing at an open pit (OP) site was also performed. This report describes the INS as it was employed on the mining machine in the laboratory, in the field, and OP tests, and provides the accuracy and performance results of the OP and highwalltests.

Recent studies ** at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines have revealed some interesting facts as to the probable behavior of steamed coke in the blast furnace . The literature on the chemistry of the blast furnace was tho roughly reviewed , and with this information in mind , the probable behavior of the coke sulphur in the blast furnace was deduced . Enough small - scale tests were conducted to furnish a check on most of the important deductions , and the conclusions derived therefrom accord with what is already known in regard to the forms of sulphur in coke , and fit in well with the general opinion concerning blast-furnace reactions .

"This paper describes novel methods to enhance the flow dynamics of a mechanical flotation cell that can be applied to an existing installation. There are several reasons to alter the flow dynamics. The most common motivation is to improve the metallurgical performance of the cell, for instance, to improve the flotation recovery in particle size ranges that are normally difficult to recover.The flow dynamics enhancements are associated with the geometry of the rotor-stator area and additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area has been modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or respectively more pumping efficiency with less attrition to the slurry. The tank can be fitted with various geometrical features, aimed to create a desired particle suspension profile. Depending on the targeted particle size range and application, badly selected or designed features can also have a negative effect on the metallurgical results.Besides new flotation equipment, the enhancements can be applied to existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented, concerning both flow variables and metallurgy.The common factor to above-mentioned enhancements is the use of modern computational fluid dynamics tools in the design phase, as well as the validation of the obtained CFD results in laboratory and production scale. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up.The paper demonstrates the effects of various flow geometries on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells. It shows how modern computational fluid dynamics analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before carrying out costly trial-and-error experiments in plant scale."

Beryl is a mineral that may be difficult to distinguish from quartz by casual field inspection. The easily recognized green color and hexagonal crystal form of coarse-grained beryl are by no means universal, even in beryl from pegmatitic deposits. If it occurred as a fine-grained accessory mineral in an igneous rock, it would almost certainly escape detection unless samples were submitted for petrographic or chemical analysis. There may be substantial deposits of some beryllium mineral, other than beryl, that has been overlooked because that mineral also closely resembles the common rock-forming minerals. A reliable and simple method of identifying beryllium minerals and determining the beryllium content of a rock would be helpful in exploration. This article describes preliminary experiments in applying nuclear reaction to the qualitative identification of beryl and to the semiquantitative determination of the beryllium content of rock samples. Gaudin,1,2 the first to apply a nuclear reaction in detecting beryllium minerals, developed a method that irradiates the sample with gamma rays, which react with beryllium nuclei to produce neutrons. The neutrons are then measured with standard equipment. The cross section for this reaction is about 1 millibarn. The cross section is a measure of the probability that a reaction will take place, for example, between a beryllium nucleus and an incident gamma ray or alpha particles.3-5 At 1-millibarn cross section for the reaction, satisfactory performance required a source strength of the order of 1 curie (3.7 x 10"' disintegrations per sec, where each disintegration releases one or more gamma rays). The reactions will not take place if the gamma radiation is below a minimum energy, in this case 1.63 mev. The size of the source and the energy of the radiation made heavy shielding necessary for these experiments, both to reduce the background count of the neutron counter and to safeguard personnel. The original discovery of the neutron by Chad-wick in 1932 resulted from experiments with another nuclear reaction, induced by bombarding beryllium with alpha particles in which the products are carbon-12 and neutrons. The equation for this reaction is as follows:' " ,Be" + ,He'? 6C12 + 8,n' [1] re-particle neutron In the above nuclear equation (Eq. 1), the sub- script number indicates the number of protons in the nucleus (the atomic number) and the superscript the total number of neutrons and protons (approximately the atomic mass). For the alpha-neutron reaction the cross section is about 250 milli-barns, or 250 times that of the gamma-neutron reaction used by Gaudin. The positively charged alpha particle is repelled by the positive charge of the beryllium nucleus; it must, therefore, have a certain minimum energy in order to approach close enough to the beryllium nucleus to react. For reaction with the beryllium nucleus, the lower limit of the alpha-particle energy is 3.7 mev. The alpha-neutron reaction, with polonium-210 as an alpha source, was selected for the present experiments. Alpha particles are emitted by polonium-210 at 5.30 mev, which is adequate for the reaction with beryllium. Furthermore, this isotope of polonium emits alpha particles with negligible associated gamma radiation, thus eliminating the necessity of shielding. The half-life of polonium-210 is 138 days. Inasmuch as alpha particles carry a possible charge and are large compared with most nuclear particles, their energy is rapidly dissipated in passing through matter. Their range in standard air is 3.66 cm,3 and they penetrate only a few tens of microns into a mineral sample. The short range in air can be minimized by preparation of a flat sample surface that can be brought very close to the alpha source during analysis. On the other hand, short range of alpha particles in air lessens the radiological health hazard and makes it possible to use this method without shielding. It must be emphasized, however, that the alpha emitters are potentially very dangerous if they enter the human body. Polonium must be handled with extreme caution. The literature has reported experiments on the yield of neutrons from reaction of alpha particles with beryllium nuclei. Feld" reports that in intimate mixtures of polonium and beryllium, 3 x 106 eutrons per sec are produced per curie of polonium. Elsewhere in the same reference it is stated that a sandwich-type source yields about one third as many neutrons as an intimate mixture. A table of neutron yields for full energy polonium alpha-particles on thick targets as reported by Anderson7 is the basis of Table I. From Table I it can be deduced that the elements most likely to interfere, i.e., those that also produce neutrons when bombarded by alpha particles, are boron and fluorine. These data also show that it will probably not be possible to determine very small quantities of beryllium in rocks because of the masking effects of the major elements, sodium, magnesium, and aluminum. The foundation is an essential component of the wind turbine that ensures continued operation under stable and safe conditions. Both shallow and deep foundations are utilized to support wind turbines including gravity spread foundation, anchor foundation, pier or drilled shaft foundation and pile and pile cap foundations. Conventional methods were typically utilized to design the wind turbine foundations. With the advances in numerical modeling in the geotechnical field, foundation designers may utilize numerical analysis to design wind turbine foundations. Geotechnical numerical packages allow modeling structural components and soil-structure interaction that is usually neglected in conventional methods. Furthermore, the subsoil conditions, geometries, stress-strain behavior, boundary conditions and load staging can be modeled, minimizing the assumptions and generalization. This results in better understanding of the stress strain behavior of the foundation leading to optimized foundation designs. This paper includes a brief review of current foundations used to support wind turbines with an emphasis on post tensioned single pier foundations. The current conventional foundation design methodologies and state-of-the-art foundation design utilizing numerical modeling of the single pier foundation will be discussed. Two case histories where the single pier foundation, designed using numerical modeling, were utilized to support the wind turbines will be presented. INTRODUCTION The foundation is an essential component of every wind turbine that ensures continued operation under stable and safe conditions. Turbine manufacturers provides load specifications for designers to be utilized for wind turbine foundations design. Loads include bending moments, torsional moments, lateral forces and vertical forces in both operational and extreme wind conditions. Essential specifications under seismic conditions might also be provided in seismic prone areas. Turbine manufacturers also include foundation design criteria including minimum rotational stiffness, minimum horizontal stiffness, maximum allowed inclination and maximum allowed lateral movement under both operational and extreme loads. Geotechnical explorations and evaluations are typically performed at early stages of the wind development projects. The field explorations usually include Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings, Cone Penetration Test (CPT) Soundings, geophysical surveys, and laboratory tests to define soils stratification system and soil strength and compressibility characteristics. The most critical soil parameters for turbine foundation design are shear strength parameters (cohesion and friction), shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and unit weight. The depth to the groundwater table is also a crucial parameter in design. Advanced field explorations techniques such as Dilatometer Tests and Pressuremeter Tests may also be utilized. Laboratory tests for foundation design typically include index parameters, consolidation and triaxial tests.

In this study, adsorption of copper by chemically modified orange peel was investigated. A conspicuous change occurs in the surface morphology of the biomass due to modification, which is depicted by SEM images. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were obtained and the effects of various factors, including solution pH, contact time, initial metal ions concentration and temperature, were studied by batch experiments. Kinetics was found to be best-fit pseudosecond- order equations. Equilibrium was better described by Langermuir isotherms rather than Freudlich isotherms. At 25?, pH5.30, the maximum adsorption capacity was 70.67mg?g-1 . With increase of temperature, adsorption efficiency decreased. The biosorbent was suitable for repeated use for more than five cycles.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

"With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. La séparation (ou concentration) en milieu dense est un processus pouvant être mené sur des calibres de grains de 250 à 0.50 mm avec un rendement élevé de séparation, en fonction des caractéristiques de libération des constituants des minéraux métallifères. Sont présentées dans cet article des études de cas menées dans des usines pilotes du site de Lakefield de SGS, lesquelles incluent des systèmes de minéraux tels que le spodumène, les minerais aurifères sulfurés et les minerais sulfurés complexes. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

INTRODUCTION Coal is being mined from beneath residential areas, structures, bodies of water and other surface features in the coalfields to the north, south and west of Sydney. The particular problems faced by mine operators in these areas vary considerably due to differences in the overlying strata, the variation in the depths of cover and also depend on the number of seams being mined. Detailed subsidence work first commenced in the Southern Coalfield in 1965 and is now being carried out over areas of extraction at roost collieries. The analysis of the results of the early investigations and of the work which continues in other areas has shown that there is a consistent relationship between subsidence and mine geometry and has led to a reliable empirical method for the prediction of subsidence. In addition, particular aspects of each of the studies in the Southern Coalfield results in a clearer understanding of strata movements and of the resulting subsidence. The features of a subsidence trough apply generally to all areas but the magnitudes of specific features vary according to the stratigraphy of the particular coalfield. The aim of the subsidence work is to quantify the effects of subsidence for a range of mining geometries and mining conditions to enable the maximum safe recovery of coal from beneath surface features. The importance of local subsidence investigations is becoming more evident to mine operators and to authorities or organisations with surface interests. The subsidence work also provides important information on the stabilities of pillars of coal which remain unmined between panels of extracted coal. These pillars are not extracted either because of poor mining or geological conditions, or because pillar extraction is not part of the particular mining operation. Subsidence studies over these coal pillars clearly establish whether the pillars have remained stable or have failed to support the overlying strata. With subsidence studies continuing over several years, it is possible to assess the stabilities of these pillars on a long term basis. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY OF SUBSIDENCE Geographical setting Most of the black coal production in Australia comes from the Sydney Basin. The coal seams extend for approximately 350 km along the coast of New South Wales and inland for distances up to 150 km. The City of Sydney is located near the centre of the coastal extent of the Basin where coal has been mined at a depth of 900 m. The Sydney Basin is part of the Main Coal Province of NSW and is divided into several coal- fields. The Southern Coalfield to the south of Sydney contained 15 operating mines and produced 12.7 million tonnes of raw coal during the 12 months to June 1981. The collieries discussed later are shown in Fig. 1. The prominent topographical feature of the area is the Illawarra Escarpment which rises to 400 m above sea level, or 300 m above the coastal strip along the South Pacific Ocean. The escarpment is mainly sand- stone and the weathering of the cliff line has resulted in a covering of talus material at its base. Several collieries are located near the seams which outcrop along the escarpment. The city of Wollongong is located in a scenically attractive area on the coastal plain. The suburbs of Wollongong extend north along the coastline, south to beyond Lake Illawarra and west to the lower slopes of the escarpment. The Illawarra Escarpment forms the eastern boundary of the Woronora Plateau. On a regional scale the surface dips gently to the west and thus forms a watershed for the rivers, most of which flow in a general north westerly direction, sometimes forming steep gorges in the sandstone. These rivers join the Nepean and Hawkesbury River system and flow into the Pacific Ocean north of Sydney. Seven dam have been constructed over the Southern Coalfield (Fig. 1) and with one large dam further to the west, their stored waters provide the needs of the Cities of Sydney and Wollongong and the surrounding districts. A large part of the area affected by mining is the undeveloped bushland of the associated catchment areas. In general no special precautions have been required with respect to subsidence with the exception of the dam structures and stored waters. With the increase in coal mining activities and the expanding residential development south of the City of Campbelltown in the outer Sydney Metropolitan area, subsidence is becoming an increasingly important area of research. Structures which have been affected or considered are townships and extensive residential areas, buildings of historical importance, major tollways, and a high pressure natural gas pipeline. The subsidence effects of mining beneath natural features within national parks is coming under study as mining approaches these areas. Geological setting The coal seams of the Southern Coalfield lie within the Illawarra Coal Measures. They contain high rank coking coal used in the local steel industry and for export. The Bulli Seam is mined extensively through- out the Southern Coalfield with the lower Wongawilli Seam being second in importance with regard to coal production. The top of the Bulli Seam is taken to be the marker horizon between the Permian Coal Measures

"A method is described for determining the viability of hard rock orebody extraction by block caving. Using a very limited amount of geotechnical data, the procedure enhances Laubscher’s empirical stability graph method by using the complex structural modelling system (ChaSM) to assess cavability and block cave tonnages.IntroductionIn considering the selection of suitable mining methods, block caving has gained popularity over other extraction systems in recent years (Butcher, 1999). This has been ascribed to the fact that block caving is the lowest cost per ton mining method, with orebodies that were in the past considered unsuitable for caving, now being successfully mined. However, even though all orebodies will cave, a problem exists in the evaluation of economic viability — it is necessary to be able to predict both when the orebody will cave and what will be the sizes of the initial ore fragments (and the associated tonnages) that report to the drawpoints. This problem is compounded by the fact that, during the scoping study phase of a project, only limited geotechnical data may exist on which to base an assessment of whether block caving is viable or not. Empirical and numerical methods of cavability assessment do not account for the full effects of geological discontinuity trace lengths, nor for the stress regime. Those require significant geotechnical data to be available. The result is that uncertainty may exist as to whether block caving is an economic option. This uncertainty is complicated by the fact that limited experience exists with the caving of more competent orebodies.This paper describes a method for assessing cavability, and for predicting the size of initial ore fragments and the tonnages reporting to block cave drawpoints, using only the level of data normally available during a scoping study. Fragment size and tonnages are assessed by identifying potentially unstable blocks and wedges in the undercut back using statistical joint data. The effects of lateral confining stresses are accounted for by comparing the in situ stress orientations with the joint orientations. To evaluate the accuracy of the method, a back analysis exercise was conducted to predict cavability and initial tonnage for a mine in which the actual behaviour is known. The method is then applied to cavability and tonnage predictions for a hard rock orebody."

SEVERAL authors1-6 have shown that, during solidification from the melt, the direction of formation of substructure boundaries depends upon the direction of heat flow and the rate of solidification of the metal. The most prominent of these observations was that a preferred orientation developed during the solidification of the columnar zone of an ingot which for face-centered-cubic metals was the <100> direction. Previous explanations1-&apos; given to account for this preferred orientation and the other boundary phenomena are all based on the premise that the phenomena are characteristics of the pure element. However, recent experiments by Rosenberg and Tiller7 have demonstrated that the preferred orientation in pure lead is the <111> orientation, and that the heretofore observed <100> orientation is due to the effect of solute on the mode of solidification of the metal. Teghtsoonian and Chalmers,4 studying striation boundaries in tin, and Chalmers and Rutter,5 studying corrugation boundaries in tin, showed that these substructure boundaries were aligned parallel to the axis of heat flow for slow rates of growth, and that the alignment varied from this direction as a function of the rate of growth. to approach the den-drite direction at high rates. Chalmers,6 studying the direction of formation of a grain boundary separating two crystals of different orientation, showed that at slow growth rates the boundary is parallel to the axis of heat flow, while at higher speeds it will deviate from this direction, sloping into the crystal whose dendrite orientation departs the most from the axis of heat flow. It is this phenomenon that allows certain crystallites in the chill zone region of an ingot to encroach on their neighbors and ultimately produce the preferred orientation of the columnar zone of the ingot. Since the previous explanations of this preferred orientation are unable to account for the recent observations,&apos; a new mechanism will be considered. This will lead to an explanation of the other substructure boundary phenomena as well. Investigations by Graf,8 Billig,9 Rsenberg,10 and others have demonstrated in a striking fashion that crystal growth takes place by the deposition of individual layers oriented along the close-packed planes of the material considered. Tarner (1),3/ Muskat (2), and Schilthuis (1) have presented methods of calculating oil recovery by the expansion of dissolved gas with and without return of gas to the reservoir. Although electronic computers have eliminated the tedious and time-consuming calculations (4) required by each of these methods, many petroleum engineers do not have access to electronic computers. For these engineers a short method is presented that uses the Tarner method as a base. Moreover, for engineers who have access to computers and have not as yet prepared a program, the short Tamer method requires less computer time than the long iterative methods. In the proposed short method, no plotting of the calculated data is required to determine a point of intersection described in the original Tarner presentation, as only one calculation is needed to determine the value sought, or two calculations if greater accuracy is desired.

The annual budget for the repair and maintenance of equipment at Syncrude Canada Ltd is in excess of 450 million dollars. Of this amount, a significant portion can be attributed to the loss of material on various pieces of equipment throughout the operation. In order to effectively battle the different wear and corrosion mechanisms that lead to material loss, it is important to understand how materials behave in the environments in which they are used. Through the work carried out at Syncrude, and work conducted with various external collaborators, significant improvements in both equipment reliability and productivity have been achieved. This paper will review some recent field trails where materials research has demonstrated the potential for significant improvements in equipment run life and reduced maintenance costs. These field trails will demonstrate the need for understanding the interaction between various damage mechanisms and the materials used in different services. The paper will also discuss current areas of focus along with future directions for further work.

Gold recovery from refractory ores can be very difficult and complicated depending on the causes of the refractoriness. Typically, a fine wind and/or the oxidation of the gold-bearing sulfide minerals are required to liberate gold from the host rock matrix. Mineral separation techniques, particularly surface¬wettability based separation (i.e., flotation) and magnetic separation, can be used to pre-concentrate the gold and sulfide minerals, or to remove mineral species that are harmful either to the oxidation of the gold-bearing sulfides or to the cyanidation following the oxidation. In this paper, several processes are described, including oil-agglomeration flotation recovery of fine-grained gold and sulfide, reverse flotation of carbonate minerals prior to pressure or bio oxidation, reverse flotation of elemental sulfur after pressure or bio oxidation but prior to cyanide leaching, and magnetic concentration of gold-bearing iron oxides. The integration of these techniques with gold hydrometallurgical processes may make the economic recovery of gold from an otherwise uneconomic refractory ore possible.

O fenômeno de colagem é a formação de aglomerados de pelotas, denominados clusters, devido à sinterização do ferro gerado durante o processo de redução. O resultado disto é a elevação da perda de carga nos reatores de redução direta. Tal fenômeno vem sendo estudado por vários pesquisadores, pois as práticas operacionais dos reatores têm priorizado o uso de temperaturas de bustle gas (BG) cada vez maiores, o que potencializa o aparecimento dos clusters. Uma alternativa para controlar a colagem é por meio de utilização de agentes de coating (AC’s). Em relação às matérias primas utilizadas como AC´s, as questões que surgem agora são as seguintes: Como se comportam os AC’s em temperaturas muito elevadas de BG? Qual seria a maior temperatura possível de BG? A fim de começar a entender a melhor maneira de responder a estas questões foram realizados alguns testes de caráter exploratório e não convencionais para avaliar o comportamento de alguns materiais de coating a elevadas temperaturas de redução. Os resultados destes testes mostraram a possibilidade dos AC’s funcionarem a temperaturas maiores que a de inicio do amolecimento da carga e que, nestas temperaturas, a sua granulometria pode ser parâmetro determinante para seu desempenho. O aprimoramento dos ensaios de simulação do processo de redução em reatores de redução direta é fundamental para responder as questões que se apresentam em relação ao tema.

The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60? x 113" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns. This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining.

The roles of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in smog formation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Samples of automobile exhaust with varying HC and NOx levels were irradiated in a smog chamber under conditions that resulted in smog levels similar to those observed in the atmosphere. Results were used to define the patterns that describe the dependence of a number of smog manifestations on HC and on NOx. Using these dependence data and some simplifying assumptions, estimates were made of the ranges within which HC and NOx must lie in order to obtain specified levels of air quality.
