Reverse-flotation technology is often applied in iron ore dressing plant, in order to enhance the quality of iron concentrate from magnetic separation. However, this technology has disadvantages in operating cost, energy consumption, and environmental protection. Developing innovative equipment to process magnetite ore more-effectively is a way to get rid of these disadvantages of reverse flotation and improve the quality of iron concentrate. This paper describes the development of Complex Flashing-Field Magnetic Cleaner, a new kind of equipment based on the principle of combination of separation in magnetic field and separation in gravity field. This innovative equipment possesses a tailor-made magnetic system and has the characteristics of a magnetic field, which can strengthen the formation of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of gangue minerals, improving the quality of separation. The automatic control system developed specifically for this equipment can further increase the accuracy of separation and stabilize the process. Test results showed that this equipment is reliable in operation, economically beneficial, and has large potential of application.

The solvent extraction (SX) processes of the three pressure acid leach (PAL) nickel plants in Western Australia have been reviewed. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three W A nickel plants make these processes complicated and costly in capital and ?operation. The research work carried out by the SX group at the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy I CSIRO Minerals has led to the development of direct solvent extraction (DSX) processes to recover and purify nickel and cobalt from leach solutions. The simplicity of the process flowsheets and the expected savings in capital and operating costs are the major advantages of the new DSX processes over the reviewed processes. By using a new synergistic organic system in semi-continuous tests with a pilot plant leach solution (after iron precipitation) from BHP-BiIliton Stainless Steel Materials, the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were separated from the major impurities (Mn, Mg and Ca, together with Cl) in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted manganese, magnesium and' calcium were easily scrubbed out. After stripping, the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were concentrated, resulting in a much smaller second SX circuit and equipment in the down stream processes. The extraction and stripping kinetics of the metals with the new synergistic organic solution were very fast. The extraction and stripping almost reached steady state within 0.5 minutes. Semi-continuous test work with a synthetic leach solution, a cobalt pilot plant leach solution from Peko Rehabilitation Project Pty Ltd and a synthetic solution to simulate a concentrated laterite leach solution from BHP-Billiton Stainless Steel Materials showed that manganese, calcium, copper and zinc can be effectively and efficiently separated from nickel, cobalt and magnesium by extraction, scrubbing and stripping. This led to the development of another DSX process using D2EHPA to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions.

The incorporation of reduction and reduction/diffusion processes into the process 'scheme is discussed and a detailed description of ,several liquid-liquid extraction schemes are developed. A synopsis of experimental results obtained using this: method to separate rare earth and other metal based materials will be given.

MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

This paper is concerned with the drainage behaviour of gangue mineral in the froth phase. Experiments were carried out in a continuous laboratory flotation cell in which froth depth and bubble size could be changed independently. The fraction of solids returning from the froth to the pulp zone was expressed using a rate constant. A mixture of hydrophilic solids (silica) and floatable particles (glass ballotini) was used as a flotation feed. Samples of glass ballotini of different hydrophobicities were obtained, using controlled silanation. Three samples, with contact angles of 50, 66, 82 degrees, were used. The effect of the initial bubble size (pulp bubble size), concentration of gangue mineral in the froth zone, and froth depth on the drainage of silica, were investigated. The drainage rate of the entrained solids increases with an increase in the degree of hydrophobicity of the floatable particles. Concerning the effect of pulp bubble size on the drainage rate of entrained solids, larger bubbles always give higher drainage rates due to formation of relatively loose froth structures which allow gangue particles to easily move down to the pulp zone. Conversely, smaller bubbles exhibit lower drainage rate constants, in particular at shallow froth depths.

In this paper we present The Ultimate Flotation Cell, a newly developed flotation cell that is proving very popular in the industry. All flotation cells have only one purpose and that is the recovery of the required product, the patented impeller and disperser system of the Ultimate Flotation Cell allows total flexibility in order to achieve the optimal recovery. This ability to tune the cell performance provides the optimization of the ?capture? (collection) stage, all existing models address the need for a wide bubble size distribution (100µm-2 mm) to obtain a better flotation size-by-size, Yoon, 1999,Yoon 2000, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1999. The Ultimate Flotation Cell provides flexible performance optimization. This ability to optimize the flotation regime particular to a specific ore is achieved by the following factors: ? The impeller allows vastly improved air induction rates compared to conventional and sparged cells. This ability to induce and disperse large quantities of air, in a controlled manner, allows the cells to be tuned to give the optimal Sb by varying the rotational speed via a VSD which every cell is fitted with. ? The patented impeller gives a very constant and stable air induction rate, which ensures that the cell?s circulation pattern is constant, giving a very stable surface, allowing optimal froth depth. ? Although conventional dart valve, level control can be offered, great success has been achieved with a simple draft tube/sand relief device. ? The cells have a inlet design similar to the old Denver ?Cell-to-Cell? design, which guarantees the at lease one pass through the mixing zone in each cell. Actual plant performance data will be presented from two plants, one in Zambia and the other in the DRC.

An apparatus and procedure have been developed for testing the anchorage effectiveness of slotted-type bolts. The apparatus consists of: (1) A hydrualic Jack assembly for loading the bolt and (2) a device (extensometer or cathetometer) for measuring displacement of the bolt as it is loaded. This apparatus and procedure permit measurment of anchor slip for loads up to the yield load of the bolt. Two representative makes of slotted-type bolts (a total of 94 bolts) were tested in typical sandstone and shale mine roof. Analysis of the test results showed that (1) anchorage capacities up to the yield load of the bolts can be developed in either rock type; (2) the shape of the slotted end of the bolt affects the ease with which the bolt can be driven; (3) all bolts for which the driving distance was more than 1.25 inches produced satisfactory anchorage in both rock types (thus, driving distance can be used as a criterion for satisfactory anchorage); (4) for the group of bolts that was satisfactorily anchored the anchor slip was unaffected by the type of bolt but was considerably larger in shale than in sandstone; and (5) the bolt expansion, that is, the amount the wedge expands the prongs in excess of the diameter of the hole, can also be employed as a criterion for satisfactory anchorage. Although the bolt-expansion and driving-distance results do not differ appreciably, the latter is recommended because it is easier to determine.

Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. THE study of chemical reactions of liquid steel and basic open-hearth slag involves a complex slag system of at least eight important components, and often a number of others. In initiating an experimental program on the equilibrium relationship of slag and metal, it became evident that but little progress could be expected in the interpretation of the complex slags until an understanding had been gained of the simpler liquid systems composed of a limited number of slag constituents. The simplest system that in any way resembles open-hearth slag must contain lime, silica and iron oxide. Attempts to produce in an induction furnace slags containing only these constituents have met with serious limitations because of the solubility of refractories in the slag. Thus in acid-lined furnaces the slag is always saturated with silica and consequently contains between 48 and 63 per cent of this component. In basic-lined furnaces an undesired additional component, magnesia, is introduced to the extent of some 3 to 15 per cent, depending upon the acidity, sometimes with disastrous results to the furnace. Thus in a magnesia-lined furnace, Fetters and Chipman1 found it impossible to prepare slags in which the ratio (CaO + MgO)/SiO2 was less than that corresponding to the metasilicate (approximately 0.8: I). Between this composition and that of the true acid slags lies a field of composition about which very little is known and which cannot be explored by any ordinary means. This circumstance, as well as the desire to study the more basic slags in the absence of magnesia, calls for the development of a method by which slags may be brought into equilibrium with molten metal without coming in contact with refractory. Such a technic has been provided by the rotating induction furnace developed by Barrett, Holbrook and Wood.2 Three modifications of the rotating furnace were described by these authors. The first was essentially a rotating refractory cylinder containing the magnesia crucible, which was itself heated by a graphite crucible. In the second, only the magnesia crucible rotated, the cylindrical graphite heater being stationary. In the third, the coil and crucible revolved, and the metal was heated directly by induction. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Furnace The furnace used in this investigation differed from previous designs and may be considered a fourth modification of the original rotating furnace. A cyclic leaching process was developed for selectively leaching and recovering cadmium from nickel-cadmium scrap battery waste. The six major steps in the process are the following: (1) washing the plates to remove KOH electrolyte, (2) roasting at 550° to 600° C to oxidize metallic cadmium and decompose cadmium and nickel salts, (3) leaching with an ammonium nitrate solution, (4) precipitation of the leached cadmium from solution as cadmium carbonate using CO2 gas, (5) removal of CO2 from the lixiviator by adjusting to pH 4.5, heating, and evacuating the system, and (6) removal of small amounts of leached nickel from the lixiviator using a solvent extraction technique. The regenerated lixiviator is then recycled to leach additional plates. Cadmium extraction was 94 percent and the cadmium carbonate product contained 0.14 percent nickel and 0.12 percent cobalt impurity. The leached plates were smelted to a high nickel-low iron alloy with no detectable amounts of cadmium.

A copper-gold project has required a number of trade-off studies underpinned by test work to settle on pragmatic flowsheets and throughputs to support a pre-feasibility study that provides a compelling financial case. The primary trade-off studies were based on the mine schedule, ore type feed-grade recovery relationships, likely concentrate grades and typical marketing terms as well as the estimated capital and operating costs for a range of throughputs and mining strategies. Secondary trade-off studies were conducted for specific circuits and additional processing options. Although the details of these studies are not presented, the technical options and subsequent flowsheets are discussed. While the flowsheets will be optimised during the feasibility study stage, the basis is now fixed for the four ore types that would be mined from the copper-gold orebody. The ore types, resulting from a strong weathering profile, exhibit a wide range of copper mineralisation and gold associations, as well as gangue types. They display a range of characteristics that necessitated a nuanced approach to flowsheet development. The primary separation techniques that have been employed include gravity, classification, flotation and leaching while a range of comminution methods have been selected to suit the properties of the ore types. While technical issues are important factors in terms of maximising the quality of separations, recoveries and revenues, attention to material handling, equipment characteristics, the mine schedule, and capital and operating costs are equally important considerations for settling upon a suitable and robust flowsheet. "Al-Li binary alloys with nominal Li contents of0.15, 1.1and2.8 (in wt%) were aged naturally at room temperature for two months, aged at low temperatures ( 65 and 1 OOEC) for up to 2 months and aged artificially at 190EC for 4 days after water quenching to 25EC following solutionizing at 530EC for 20 minutes. Ageing behavior of these binary alloys were studied by Vicker's Hardness measurements and DSC thermal analysis. Thermal analysis results indicate the formation of GP zones of Al-Li system in Al-2.8wt%Li binary alloy. In the same alloy, rapid quenching from one phase region (a) gives rise to precipitation of small o' particles in a matrix (a) with still high supersaturation. During ageing of this alloy below lOOEC an additional transformation, i.e., GP zone formation occurs proceeding at a very high rate which is described on the basis of the theoretical analysis for the quenched Al-Li system proposed by Khachaturyan et al [6]. Ageing at temperatures below 11 OEC takes place slowly by the formation of small d' particles of lower thermal stability than the quenched-in d precipitates in addition to GP zones resulting in an increase in hardness compared to water quenched samples. During artificial ageing, GP zones transform by dissolution to d' precipitates while d' particles already in the microstructure coarsen during under aged condition at which hardness increases with time till peak aged condition.IntroductionIn binary Al-Li alloys the d' (Al3Li) fully coherent internally ordered inetastable phase of Li2 structure with a=0.4038d [1-5] forms homogeneously between 120 and 190EC before the formation of stable d' (A!Li) phase and cause the superior mechanical properties. This is due to an appreciable age hardening effect resulting because of the d' precipitation during ageing [1]. The response of d' to decomposition and its formation kinetics have been studied previously and it is believed that the decomposition of the a-supersaturated solid solution occurs in a two stage process; i.e., a 6 d' (Al3Li) 6 d(A!Li). Khachturyan et al [6] theoretically investigated precipitation of the d' phase and gave an interpretation of the transformation paths of the quenched Al-Li alloys. They predict that the disordered supersaturated solid solution congruently orders, and then the uniformly ordered solution decomposes into ordered regions that differ in Li-content. Finally, ordered d' phase forms in the disordered matrix."

I. INTRODUCTION Today, there are two conflicting trends facing the designer of the bulk material handling system. The first trend is the necessity to stockpile increasingly larger amounts of bulk material (coal, ore, stone etc.) as economically as possible. Fig. 1 illustrates such a typical large storage pile. The second trend is the increasing awareness of the ecological problems of today manifesting itself in a new concern over possible air pollution from storage pile surface particles. The conflict between these two trends can become dramatic when this bulk storage pile is located near a heavily populated area. Strong winds can easily create a severe local problem by blowing the particles from the pile surface toward residential and commercial areas, igniting a crisis in public relations. (2), (3), (4). To help define our combined subject and ecological culprit more accurately, Fig. 2 shows the commonly accepted size range of dust particles. A descrip¬tion of the present state-of-the-art of dust control for large storage piles is the intent of this paper. II. OPEN STORAGE PILE SYSTEMS - ALTERNATE CHOICES AND RELATIVE COSTS In discussing the open storage dust problem and possible solutions, one obvious question arises - what are the economics of placing large bulk storage under cover? Part or this answer will be found in Fig. 3 - an approximate unit capital cost comparison between several methods of storage. It will be noted that the cost curve(s) for the closed concrete silo storage illustrated in Fig. 4 is cheaper per ton at relatively small tonnage capacities, but as tonnage increases, the open pile storage unit cost (B) becomes more economical. Curve (T) covers the cost of open storage using the plow feeder arrangement shown in Fig. 5. A gravity draw-down pile with feeders at the base as shown in Fig. 6 represents yet another open storage choice.

Muscovite was the crystalline material used in the experiments discussed in this paper. It was both wet and dry ground for various periods of time. The effects (physical and chemical changes) produced in grinding are analyzed by use of thermal analysis. That grinding may change a crystalline material both in a physical and in a chemical sense has been shown by a number of authors in recent years. Mackenziel and Bartha2 reported the effects of careful grinding on muscovite, quartz, gypsum, dolomite, etc. Increase in specific surface produced by grinding implies increase in total energy of a system. Newly produced surfaces are chemically more reactive; dislocations may be introduced during grinding and, on the other hand, existing strain may be released by the same process, as shown by Holt, et a1.3 All these changes are easily detected by thermal analysis, but it is not easy to separate the multiplicity of effects registered and to arrive at quantitative interpretations. This paper is an attempt to analyze, by the use of thermal analysis, some effects produced in grinding. In differential thermal analysis (DTA) one measures the sum of all thermal changes occurring in a substance during heating or cooling; e.g., chemical changes, such as decompositions, synthesis, oxidation, reduction, etc., and physical changes such as phase transformations, changes in specific surface and thermal conductivity, strain release, etc. By thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), on the other hand, only chemical changes involving weight loss or gain are recorded. Similarly, gas evolution analysis (GEA) will register only reactions involving gas evolution. By performing two or all three of these methods of thermal analysis simultaneously and on the same specimen, one can separate the different effects registered and, by difference, evaluate their magnitude. The results of TGA are usually plotted as percent weight against furnace temp. When one differentiates weight against furnace temp, a rate of weight-change curve is obtained, and the resulting differential thermogravimetric (DTG) plots are similar in appearance to DTA thermograms for the same reaction. While the integrated area under a DTA peak represents enthalpy and can be expressed in calories per gram the area under the corresponding DTG peak represents the weight change which took place during a reaction. The similarity of DTA and DTG thermograms obtained from one material can be seen in Figs. 1 and 2. EXPERIMENTAL A Fisher mortar grinder and a porcelain mill with burundum balls were used for both dry and wet grinding. Muscovite was first carefully hand-filed and screened on 20 and 100 mesh. The middle fraction was considered essentially unaltered muscovite.

Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

THE 130th Meeting of the Institute was held in Birmingham on Oct. 13 to 15, with visits to other mines and districts before and after. The last visit of the Institute to Birmingham was made in 1888, thirty-six years ago, and vast development has been made in' the district since then. With proverbial southern hospitality compounding over this period of years the welcome given to the Institute was such that .it is difficult to express properly the gratification and appreciation of the visiting members and the officers of the Institute. The Birmingham News in an editorial said: Birmingham is duly appreciative of the presence of these gentlemen, not because they are all distinguished in their great services in the mining and metallurgical world, but for the further reason that our interests are very largely wrapped up in their deliberations. Birmingham is one of the great industrial centers of America. Their discussions are of vital concern to all of us.

Ammonia leaching of copper sulfide concentrates, matte, scrap or other sources of copper yields copper amnine sulfate solutions which are converted to metal in a two-stage process involving precipitation of inter- mediate sulfites and their thermal decomposition to copper powder of high purity. Processing details and results are given. Considerable simplification in circuitry and cost savings are indicated. Energy requirements are reduced by substitution of copper powder precipitation and ammonium sulfate crystallization for solvent extraction, electrowinning and lime boil.

The Deep Exploration Technology project, as part of the Australian Cooperative Research Centre, is developing technologies to drill deep boreholes for mineral exploration purposes. The aim of the initiative is to transfer drilling technologies from oil and gas into mining applications. Several modifications have to be pondered due to this technology exchange: smaller cuttings sizes because of using impregnated diamond bits; narrower annulus space; higher drilling fluid velocity and likelihood of turbulent flow regime in the annulus; and higher pressure loss. In particular the results of our lab experiments have shown that the increase in concentration of small size cuttings can significantly change the rheology of the mud when drilling in hard rocks. This, in return, could have a noticeable increase in the pressure loss encountered along the annulus space. As a continuation of the above study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the cuttings transport behaviour in small size annulus space. Fluid velocity, annulus size, cuttings concentration, cuttings density, and cuttings size were some of the parameters that were varied to see their effects on cuttings transportation and the pressure loss along the annulus space. The results indicate that, due to the differences between oil and gas and mining drilling, conventional oil well planning is not applicable for mineral exploration drilling and numerical simulation would help in this matter.

The sulphide ore occurring in the North Mine at Broken Hill is of a complex nature, consisting of an intimate mixture of argentiferous galena, marmatite (zinc-iron sulphide), and gangue minerals.
