Rock bolts are commonly used to reinforce ground in underground mining and civil tunnel environments. Rock bolts serve two main functions: i) they suspend large, loose blocks of ground, and ii) provide a protective pressure arch to restrain the deformation in an excavated void. Automated and precise tracking of rock bolt positions can assist with the operational success of ground support by reducing the amount of labour required in current manual practices. A point cloud is a large list of x, y and z coordinates in three-dimensional space, that when visualised, show a precise 3D representation of a physical environment. Point cloud data can be collected using accurate LiDAR scanners. These scanners can be mounted on a stationary tripod or on a moving vehicle. A key way point cloud data is used is in the bolt detection project being completed in conjunction with UNSW Sydney, which aims to provide an automated location of underground rock bolts from LiDAR scans. The immediate challenge with identifying rock bolts is that they constitute a very small portion of the data set amounting to approximately 0.01 per cent of some of the collected civil tunnel data. The process of detecting rock bolts from point clouds therefore requires a quick elimination of large background data while still preserving the bolt data. A further challenge is that the geometry of underground environments can often be very complex and non-uniform. To overcome these challenges, a two-step coarse to fine deep learning approach is taken. The first step is a coarse background elimination step aimed at removing as much of the background data as possible. The second step is a finer classification method, which uses deep learning to further segment the bolts from the remaining background. Additionally, a computer vision module is being implemented, which is expected to increase the detection rate by adding another dimension to the training data set.

"Mining is an inherently risky business. Over the years, major mine disasters have resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands of miners in the United States. These disasters also resulted in innovations in approaches to mine design, operations and the training of miners and mine rescue teams. The U.S. Congress responded to these disasters with new laws designed to create mandatory safety and health standards as a means to eliminate fatal accidents; to reduce the frequency and severity of nonfatal accidents; to minimize health hazards and to promote improved safety and health conditions in the nation’s mines.Following a mine emergency preparedness and response holistic gap analysis in 2012, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) identified the need for the development of risk and readiness assessment models for MSHA and the mining industry. MSHA’s objective was to evolve existing theoretical concepts for risk and readiness assessment into simplified tools that can be applied by the mining industry for use at operational levels. In 2012, MSHA hired ABS Group, a recognized industry leader in safety risk management and a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Bureau of Shipping, to develop self-assessment models to help meet this objective.In September 2012, MSHA chartered a project to supply the coal mining industry with a pro-active toolset for mine operators to:1. Self-assess the risks associated with underground coal mining operations in order to prevent major mine emergencies.2. Assess the preparedness of mine operators to respond to an emergency.3. Measure the readiness of mine rescue teams and responsible persons to execute emergency plans.MSHA’s objective was to evolve existing theoretical concepts for risk and readiness assessment into simplified tools that can be applied by the coal mining industry for use at operational levels."

A fundamental safety research area for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach is to develop and evaluate new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion protection for mining personnel. The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) cooperated with HeiTech Corp. of Virginia, Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Queensland, Australia, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in three separate research programs to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of numerous innovative seal designs and ventilation control structures for use in underground coal mines. For each phase of the program, various full-scale seals, stoppings, and an overcast design were constructed in PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. The seals and stoppings were built in crosscuts and were subjected to explosions to evaluate their strengths. Four pumpable cementitious seal designs ranging in thickness from 610 to 915 mm (24 to 36 in) were evaluated in the first cost-reimbursable research program with HeiTech Corp. A simple wooden framework with brattice liner was used as a form to contain the cementitious slurry during the curing period. As the seal designs decreased in thickness, higher compressive strength cementitious grout was used. All four seals withstood an explosion pressure pulse of at least 138 kPa (20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage resistance. In the second cost-reimbursable research program with Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Australia, several innovative seal and stopping designs and an overcast design were evaluated. Each of the seal designs and the overcast side and wing walls used one or more air-inflated vinyl bladder assemblies anchored to the mine roof and hitched into the ribs and floor. The air within these bladders was displaced with a high-strength cementitious grout. The overcast deck consisted of a 200-mm ('7.8-in) thick reinforced cementitious slab. This was the first time that an overcast structure had been explosion tested under full-scale conditions. All of the seals, stoppings, and overcast design passed the air leakage tests before being subjected to a series of explosions with static pressure pulses ranging from 14 to 475 kPa (2 tab 69 psi). Instrumentation measured seal and overcast wall displacement as a function of time. The 450-mm (1 7.7-in) thick seal in the 2.8-m(9-ft) high third crosscut withstood an explosion pressure of 170 kPa (25 psi), but failed during a later test, which generated a peak static pressure of 475 kPa (69 psi) at the seal location. A similar 450-mm-thick seal in the 2.1-m (7-ft) high second crosscut withstood three explosion tests, which generated peak static pressures of 195, 205, and 370 kPa (28, 30, and 54 psi) at the seal location. Next, the overcast design withstood four explosions, which generated static overpressures ranging from 16 to 47 kPa (2.3 to 6.8 psi). A third program at the request of MSHA evaluated the effectiveness of using pressurized grout bags (Packsetter bags) along the mine roof and ribs in lieu of floor and rib hitching for a standard-type solid- concrete-block seal. This program was initiated to address an urlusual geological mining condition encountered when building seals in entries where required rib hitching is not a viable option due to soft friable coal. Results showed that the use of these quick-setting grout-filled Packsetter bags pressurized internally to 300 kPa (44 psi) not only provides a seal that can withstand a 138-kPa static pressure explosion, but also provides a sealing option where rib hitching is not possible.

The gasification of lump coke with CO2 was studied in a fixed-bed reactor. The effective diffusivity of the gas was evaluated from measurements of the reactivity of the lump coke, produced by BHP Steel in New South Wales, and from kinetic parameters that were determined from the reactivity of fine grains. The grain model of effective diffusion in porous media was adopted to express the gasification rate of the lump coke and was found to fit the experimental data well. The strain hardening associated with the creep of magnesium single crystals at room temperatu.Je was investigated by shear tests in which the direction of stressing was reversed a number of times after creep in a <100> direction. The strain hardening was strongly anisotropic; the largest amount occurring in the direction of flow and the least 180 deg to this. The time law for creep changed from a parabolic type to logarithmic for the first and subsequent reversals of stress. For a given stress the creep strain decreased significantly for the first and second reversals and then only slightly for subsequent reversals. The logarithmic creep constant a changed in a similar manner. A linear relationship was observed between the creep strain for a given reversal and the stress. The slope for the third reversal yielded a strain hardening coefficient 12 to 16 times greater than that observed for unidirectional flow. Al-though no recovery was observed upon resting at room temperature, the hardening resulting from stress reversals could be completely removed by heating to 450" C. PREVIOUS work1.&apos; indicated that the creep rate of magnesium single crystals tested in the temperature range of 78" to 364°K decreased with time. This was attributed to an increase in internal stress resulting from an accumulation of dislocations at internal obstacles. The object of the present investigation was to further evaluate the nature of this hardening by conducting tests in which the direction of stressing is changed after previous creep in shear in a given slip direction. "Considerable research has been conducted on the anodic oxidation of methanol in fuel cells. The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions to form methanol is the same reaction in reverse, i.e. CO2 + 6 H+ + 6 e- ? CH3OH + H2O. The same catalysts and conditions may operate for both reaction directions. This carbon dioxide reduction reaction, however, must be able to compete with the electrochemical reduction of water to form hydrogen gas. Thermodynamically, the reduction of CO2 to form CH3OH is slightly more favorable than the reduction of water. The use of nearly neutral electrolytes rather than acidic electrolytes makes the reduction of CO2 kinetically more favorable. The thermodynamics of various reaction steps are presented. Similarities exist with the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and the green-plant photosynthesis process that converts CO2 to carbohydrates.IntroductionVirtually all of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere is of biological origin having been generated by green-plant photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide [1]. The net reaction can be represented byCO2 + H2O ? O2 + [CH2O] (carbohydrates, etc.) (1)Chlorophyll and enzymes promote this reaction, and the energy required comes from sunlight. The actual photosynthesis process is a complex multistage reaction and requires 469 kJ mol-1 of energy supplied by the sun. Isotope tracer experiments using 18O have shown that both the oxygen atoms in the O2 molecule originate from H2O, whereas oxygen atoms in the carbohydrates come from CO2 [1]. The total amount of water on the earth is split by photosynthesis and reconstituted by respiration and combustion once every 2 million years or so. The photosynthetically generated oxygen gas temporarily enters the atmosphere and is recycled about once every 2000 years [1]. The carbon dioxide is partly recycled in the atmosphere and oceans after an average residence time of 300 years and is partly fixed by precipitation of CaCO3 and other carbonate minerals [1]."

The distribution of lead between phases in the Ag-Sb-Te system was studied using microautoradio -graphy. Two compositions were investigated, both containing an intermediate phase Known as silver antimony telluride as the major phase, and one containing AgzTe and the other SbzTes as the minor phase. For both compositions, two thermal treatments were used: nonequilibrium solidification from the melt and long equilibration anneals of the as-solidified structure. For each composition, lead was segregated in the minor phase of the as-solidified structure, but was distributed in the matrix after anneal. The electrical resistivity and carrier type were insensitive to the distribution of lead in the two-phase structure. ThERE has been considerable interest in the Ag-Sb-Te system because of its thermoelectric properties. The major interest has been in compositions on the vertical section between AgzTe and SbzTes, particularly the 50 mole pct SbzTes composition AgSbTez (compositions are conveniently expressed as mole percent SbzTes along the AgzTe-SbzTes section). One of the major problems in the proper evaluation and utilization of this material is the inability to control the electrical properties through impurity additions: all alloys prepared to date have been p-type, even with the addition of large amounts of impurities. It has been shown Wit all the compositions previously studied contain an intermediate phase of the NaCl st&apos;ructure as a major phase (denoted by b) and a second phase, either AgzTe or SbzTe3, as a minor phase.&apos;-3 One explanation for the unusual electrical behavior of this material is that the impurity additions have a higher solubility in the second phase than in the matrix; the impurity would segregate to the second phase, leaving the bulk matrix essentially free of impurity.4 In order to investigate this mechanism with a specific impurity element, the distribution of lead between the two phases was determined using autoradiography. Lead 210 was chosen because of the suitability of its 0.029 mev 0 particle for autoradiography and also because of the interest in lead as an impurity in this system.5&apos;6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two compositions were taken from the vertical section between AgzTe and SbzTes, 50 mole pet SbzTes (Viz. AgSbTez) and 75 mole pct SbzTes, in which AgzTe and SbzTes appear, respectively, as the minor phase. Lead containing radioactive lead (pb210) was added to the above compositions to provide a concentration of 0.1 wt pct Pb. The material was placed in a graphite crucible in a quartz tube which was then evacuated and sealed. The samples were melted and solidified by cooling at a rate of 8°C per min and then removed and prepared for microa~toradiography. After autoradiographic examination of these samples, they were again encapsulated and annealed in an isothermal bath at 300°C for a number of days and prepared for examination. An alternate method of preparation employed a zone-melting furnace; the molten zone traversed the sample at a rate of 1.2 cm per hr and the solid was maintained at a temperature of 500°C both before and after solidification. This treatment had the same effect as solidification at a slow rate followed by an anneal for several hours at 500°C. In order to obtain the best resolution, thin sections of the alloy were prepared by hand lapping to a thickness of approximately 20 p. Other samples were prepared for examination by lapping a flat surface on the bulk sample. The resolution, although somewhat better in the former procedure, was adequate in both instances and the majority of the samples were treated in the latter fashion. A piece of autoradiographic film (Kodak Experimental SP 764 Autoradiographic Permeable Base Safety Stripping Film) was stripped from its backing, care being taken to avoid fogging due to static-electrical discharge. A small amount of water was placed on the sample, the film applied emulsion side down on the surface of the sample, and the sample and the film dipped into water in order to assure smooth contact. After drying, the film was exposed for 2 to 5 days, the period of time selected to give the best resolution. The film was developed on the specimen and fixed and washed in place. There is a growing demand for rare earth metals for use in high strength permanent magnets, most notably Nd2Fe14B. Rare earth metals are extremely reactive, with reduction potentials around -2.5V SHE, and are conventionally produced by molten salt electrolysis. The current work was done to investigate an earlier report of electrodeposition of a neodymium ferroalloy from aqueous solution, to determine whether this approach could be an environmentally and economically competitive commercial approach for producing feedstock for permanent magnets. Such a process would be analogous thermodynamically to the Castner- Kellner process, in which aqueous sodium chloride brine is electrolyzed in cells with mercury cathodes. Metallic sodium forms an alloy (amalgam) at the cathode, thereby lowering the activity of the metallic sodium significantly below unity and making the reduction potential of sodium significantly less negative than the standard reduction potential. Here we report the effects of Nd/Fe ratio in the electrolyte, current density, temperature and two different complexing agents, glycine and cysteine, on the composition and morphology of the electrodeposits, along with current efficiency. The energy needed to produce neodymium as Nd:Fe alloys by aqueous electrodeposition was compared with values estimated for production by molten salt electrolysis and the thermodynamic energy requirement.

CORROSION tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply f oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case f salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion f the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend .2 He tested the corrosion f mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream f air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number f jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor."

"Gas dispersion in flotation defines the efficiency of the process once the chemistry has been established. There are three measurements, superficial gas velocity, gas holdup, and bubble size, which along with the derived quantity bubble surface area flux, are used to define “gas dispersion.” Sensors for measuring gas dispersion in industrial machines have been developed. This communication describes the working principle of the techniques and illustrates their potential to detect problems and to improve the operation of individual cells, banks and circuits. IntroductionFlotation is the most widely used process to separate minerals and is finding increasing application in other chemical and environmental fields. The process exploits natural and induced hydrophobicity to collect selected particles on the surface of a bubble. Once the process chemistry to control hydrophobicity has been established, the efficiency depends on dispersion of air to generate the necessary bubble surface area. Bubble surface area flux, Sb, the interfacial area generated per unit time and unit area of the machine, is emerging as one of the most useful variables to quantify gas dispersion (Gorain et al., 1997, 1998) although not without its critics (Heiskenan et al., 2001).For a bubble population of mean size db at a superficial gas velocity (or rate) Jg, the bubble surface area flux can be derived from geometric considerations (Finch et al., 1999):"

The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

In the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of the addition of zinc, there remains in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 pct zinc. At this stage in the refining operations virtually all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess copper, nickel and cobalt have been removed by the zinc additions. The silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz per ton. It then remains only to remove the zinc and antimony in order to produce refined lead. At the Herculaneum plant of the St. Joseph Lead Co., practice formerly was to complete the refining by means of oxidation in a reverberatory furnace. This process consisted of heating the lead to 1400O to 1500OF and allowing it to come in contact with excess air passing over the surface of the lead and periodically agitating the bath of lead with air. This procedure not only resulted in the loss of zinc but of a considerable quantity of lead converted to the oxide in the form of dross and fume. The fume, collected in the baghouse, together with the dross was returned to the blast furnace, thus adding appreciably to the circulating load on the blast furnace and refinery. In addition, operation and maintenance of the reverberatory furnace were expensive and required the performance of disagreeably hot and somewhat hazardous work. The process of dezincing with high vacuum was developed at this plant as a substitute for the oxidation process and finally led to lower operating costs, the practical elimination of dross and fume and the direct production of metallic zinc, which is very suitable for re-use in the desilverization process. Essentially this process consists of subjecting the lead to high vacuum, in a kettle provided with means for heating, a bell-shaped member open at the lower end so constructed that it can be immersed in the molten lead, and means for evacuating the interior of the bell and for sealing an agitator. Metallic zinc is thus produced and collects on the upper cooled part of the bell member. This metallic zinc is periodically removed and re-used in the desilverization process. The process is quite simple. It is conducted at a low temperature, thus permitting the use of iron equipment, and shows a material saving in refining costs over the old method. Equipment and Its Uses Degincing Machine.—The equipment employed in this process consists of a dezincing machine, a steel kettle of 120 tons capacity, a vacuum system and equipment for handling the dezincing machine (Fig 1). The dezincing machine consists of a compact assembly, suitable for handling with an overhead crane, consisting of a treating chamber and the agitating mechanism. Limestone-based technology for arsenic removal from water is an innovative and promising method. The technology offers the potential for low-cost disposal of a stable waste product after arsenic removal, either in an ordinary landfill or by encapsulation in concrete. Leaching research described in this paper shows that the limestone waste, after encapsulation in concrete, passes the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Leaching was less than 0.05 mg/L, which is 1/100 of the U.S. EPA?s standard for disposal of arsenic in a landfill. Disposal of arsenic-enriched waste is critical for commercial viability of arsenic-removal technologies. Low-cost disposal gives the limestone-based method an advantage that could help communities meet the new maximum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion for arsenic in drinking water. The ability to recycle the waste material in concrete could add a significant economic benefit, further reducing overall costs.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author&apos;s name, with author&apos;s degrees, titles, position. Synopsis, including a brief statement of conclusions. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction. Development of the main substance. Conclusions, in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers&apos; Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King&apos;s English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the &apos;single&apos; type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol %is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d&apos;Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramms metre per second per second (kg m/s&apos;). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. I, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers&apos; errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standardsymbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C shoulrl be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author&apos;s conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. These points should be borne in mind by authors who may submit their work to other organizations as well as to the Institute.

THE object of this study was to compare variations in slag volumes with tap changes while maintaining all other factors constant. This meant: 1. Same type of heat (Spec. SAE 1030). 2. Same charging material (3500 lb foundry, 4000 lb bought scrap). 3. Same amount of sand by weight to fix slag line. 4. Same method of melting with the exception of tap changes. 5. Same method of weighing slag after each test. The equipment of the Dodge Steel Co. consists of a 132-ton Heroult furnace lined with silica brick, using three 8-in. electrodes and a 2000-kva transformer, with four tap changes. In the melting practice we use a Fischer Carbanalyzer and a Herty viscosimeter and try to standardize all heats by making necessary carbon and slag adjustment before boil to keep all heats as uniform as possible.
