The simple act of taking a sample implies that someone will use the information contained in the analytical result to make a decision about a course of action. In the mining industry, the decisions may involve huge capital commitments for opening or closing a mine, or marginal tactical costs that involve deciding if a truckload of mineralized rock should be sent to the mill for processing, or the waste dump. Sampling is among the most fundamental activities in a mining operation, and this paper aims to examine some of the technical issues that can assist in ensuring that samples are representative and correct. Insights into the scale of variability require that we disaggregate sampling variance into its component parts and evaluate each one individually. The work of Pierre Gy in understanding the different sampling errors is the first step in establishing an optimal protocol. This must be followed by the appropriate measures to ensure the protocol is implemented such that minimal bias is introduced in the sampling process. Even with these insights the possibility exists for large unseen and hidden costs can accumulate in a mineral development because of sampling errors. These hidden costs arise due to misunderstanding of the principle factors that affect the size of sampling errors, such as the mass of the sample, the effects of splitting a sample to reduce the mass, and the influence of the nominal particle size. The handling of sample material without due regard to the sampling characteristics of the material being sampled is also a major source of sampling errors. The most significant problem is due to the influence of the so-called volume-variance effect. This effect is a consequence of the support effect and the information effect both of which relate to the difference in size at which samples are collected and mining blocks are extracted. The information effect is a function of the availability of data at the time that decisions are made about the destinations of mineralized rock, namely the mill or the waste dump. Implementation of appropriate sampling protocols in the mineral value chain remains a challenge throughout the industry. The growing understanding and deepening appreciation of sampling theory and methods means we stand on the threshold of a new era for implementing and understanding appropriate sampling procedures and protocols. In the interests of optimal development of the national patrimony it is suggested that standardization through the identification of structural problems and continuous improvement of mining processes be instituted at a national level.

The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

"Gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanide leaching have been investigated for over a century. The variation in the severity of the problem from one ore to another has led to a range of different processes being implemented at different mine sites. Most commercial options utilise one or more of the following processes: roasting, carbon pre-flotation, organic blinding, CIL, chlorine passivation, pressure oxidation, biological passivation, elevated temperature CIL, RIL and thiosulfate. This paper provides a background to identify the most appropriate process or combination of processes for a particular ore. It also presents information on how these processes may be implemented, drawing on information in the literature and from current or recent applications at operations such as the following: Stawell, Kumtor, Penjom, Twin Creeks, Macraes Flat, Kittilä, Fosterville, Inata, Carlin, Goldstrike, and Jerritt Canyon. Various process options have been dismissed, or deemed unsuccessful due to limited knowledge available on the strengths and weaknesses of the different options and their implementation. The authors have collectively been involved in flowsheet development and project implementation in four commercial plants that have treated preg-robbing ores.INTRODUCTION Cyanide processing has been the mainstay of gold recovery for well over a century. It is generally a very effective process with over 90% recovery on free milling ores, but complex and refractory ores may only give 0–50% recovery with conventional processing (La Brooy et al., 1994). People have written about gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanidation for over a century e.g. Feldtmann, (1915). The earliest reports related to African operations, but the issue has since been reported in Canada, North and South America, Australia, Russia and China. The phenomenon is usually referred to as ‘preg-robbing’ dating from the times before the use of granular activated carbon for gold recovery, when gold was lost from the pregnant solution before it could be separated from the leach solids and recovered by cementation. Many excellent reviews have been published e.g. Dunn et al. (2013), summarising the options considered and where they have been applied commercially."

The dynamic response of a thin aluminum plate subjected to both shallow and deeper buried blast loading was studied. Using a combination of high speed stereo-vision and three dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC), sequential stereo images acquired every 38.25µs during blast loading were analyzed to determine full-field deformations and plate motions (displacements, velocities and accelerations, effective surface strain and effective surface strain rate). Measurements indicate that the initial sheet deformation was highly localized for both shallow and deeper blast events, with extremely high velocity and acceleration values recorded during the earliest stages of impact loading. Full field strain and strain rate data indicate that well defined strain and strain rate “maxima” are created in the plate, with the potential of affecting the dynamic plate behavior as well as it local failure.

The paper describes the design process, trial testing and contract pile installation of 772 pre­cast concrete piles at a site in Surrey, South East England. Recommendations on how to improve the design, construction trials and main contract piling phases of the project are made. The building layout is shown in Figure 1 and is comprised of a central circulation area with five office wings radiating out from its southern side (only three of these wings were constructed in Phase 1 of the project). Approximately 60% of the circulation area and one office wing were built with a single level basement. The basement was constructed "bottom-up" in open cut with the void between the basement walls and the cut slope being back-filled with compacted site won soil above a perimeter drainage system at basement slab level. The building has up to 3 stories above basement level and is a reinforced concrete structure. The client for the project is Pfizer Ltd. Pfizer Ltd was represented on site by Laing Project Management (Laing). The consulting engineer was Ove Arup and Partners (Arup) while the piling contractor was Roger Bullivant Ltd (RBL).

Portland cement is the chief binding ingredient in mine backfill. In the presence of water, the chemical compounds within portland cement hydrate causing hardening and strength gain. During hydration, heat is generated. In certain cases, hydration heat may be produced significantly faster than it can be dissipated, which can create high temperatures in the underground environment. This paper presents the results of a series of investigations aimed at quantifying the heat generated by cemented backfill during hydration. Scaled stope models, instrumented with thermistors, were used in the investigation. Heat transfer to the hanging wall, orebody, footwall and cross-cut and production drifts was assessed during the backfill curing process and relationships between cement content, cure time, and heat generation were developed. The results of this work will assist mine operators in predicting the heat generated by cemented backfill and provide the necessary information to implement effective engineering control of heat in the underground environment.

Brunswick Mine is one of the largest underground zinc/lead mines in Canada, producing 3.4 million tones of ore annually. As mining activities advance to deeper levels, ground pressure also becomes greater. To cope with the highly stressed ground, the mine has taken some strategic measures to ensure the targeted production level. Such measures include the implementation of a pastefill system and transferring the mining method from primary/secondary stoping to pillarless pyramid stoping. With the pillarless mining method, stope sizes become smaller and the number of active stopes is also less than before. In addition, mining sequence and cycle time have to be strictly followed according to production schedule. The blasting project described in this paper tackles one of the steps in the mining cycle aimed at shortening the blasting cycle time in a stope. Furthermore, this project was conducted and managed with the Six Sigma initiative in Noranda which was implemented in the fall of 1999. Like a typical process review, the blasting operation was examined by breaking it down into many steps that can be quantified and measured. Each activity was then correlated with different factors associated with blast design as well as blast operations underground. It was found that the utilisation of voids plays a key role in the blasting cycle time. With improved void utilisation ratio, blasting cycle time has been reduced from an average of 12 shifts to ten shifts per stope. This improvement translates into approximately 180 000 tonnes of ore being blasted without any increase in manpower. This paper presents the technical aspects of the study, as well as some operational issues and improvements made during the project.

INTRODUCTION. CULM is a general term used in the anthracite regions for many years to denote a mixture of coal, bony coal and impurities which is sent to the refuse-banks. Thus, 35 years ago culm contained the pea and buckwheat sizes of anthracite; but to-day, and as mentioned in this paper, culm is used specifically to denote the material which passes through the smallest screen in the anthracite-breaker. The smallest size of commercial anthracite is known as No. 3 buckwheat, barley, or bird's-eye coal, and is ordinarily made through a round-punched plate having openings 3/16 in. in diameter, and over a round-punched plate with opening 3/32 in. or 1/16 in. in diameter. Thus culm will consist of coal, bony coal, slate, gravel, iron pyrite, etc., ranging in size from ? 3/32 in. down to dust. Other local terms for culm are " slush," " silt," and " dirt." The first experiments towards the utilization of anthracite culm by briquetting, and the first briquetting-work done in this country, were in 1872 at Port Richmond Piers, Philadelphia, Pa., by E. F., Loiseau.1 Clay was used as a binder and the finished briquette was water-proofed with shellac, etc. Excessive cost was given as the reason for discontinuing work at this plant. The Delaware k Hudson Co., in 1876, built a plant at Rondout, N. Y., which operated until 1880. Gas-tar was used as a binder, and anthracite screenings were briquetted for engine fuel. Excessive cost, poor results in firing, and the tendency of the fuel to cut the boiler-flues were given as the reasons for discontinuing the manufacture. The next plant was built by E. F. Loiseau about 1878, at Nesquehoning, Pa., near the No. 1 or Nesquehoning colliery

"Zinc has been used for many years as a galvanic coating for the protection of steel. Electrochemical measurements show that zinc actually overprotects steel. The corrosion rate of DQSK (drawing quality semi-killed) steel in air saturated salt water was determined as a Junction of applied cathodic potential. The resulting data indicate that at a critical cathodic over potential of - O. 725 Vsce an acceptably low corrosion rate of less than 1 mpy occurs. Using the developed criterion, alloys of Zn/X and AL/X were produced and evaluated in galvanic contact with steel in a standard laboratory test. The results indicate that Zn /Mn, Zn /Co, AI/Mg/Si and AI/Mg/Ge alloys offer excellent galvanic protection along with (a) no hydrogen evolution, and (b) improved dissolution life over Zn coatings.IntroductionZinc coated (galvanized) steel has been successfully used in applications where bare (or painted non-galvanized) steel would suffer corrosive attack. In general, galvanic coupling to zinc, as either an anode or a coating, is an effective means for combatting steel corrosion. Because of this, the use of galvanized steel has increased markedly, stimulated primarily by automobile manufacurers seeking to extend the corrosion warranties on automobiles(1).Although effective, zinc coatings are not without a number of drawbacks which warrant efforts to improve them. For example, because of the widely differing electrode potentials between zinc and steel ( - 1.05 Vsce and - 0.60 Vscc, respectively, in air saturated NaCl solutions), the zinc corrodes at a rapid rate to protect the steel. This is reflected in the limited lifetimes of galvanized unpainted siding. The basic electrochemistry controlling the situation is shown in Figure 1, for a system controlled by oxygen reduction. The zinc corrodes sacrificially to protect the steel, while cathodically polarizing the steel to a potential near that of zinc's open circuit anode potential."

Cyclic behaviour of axially loaded piles has been an issue since studies revealed that the capability to transfer skin friction into the ground is highly depending on the level and the number of load cycles the pile is subjected. It has been shown that degradation of skin friction due to axial cyclic loading leads to accumulating displacements and a severe reduction in pile capacity. In Germany the DIN 1054 as well as the Recommendations of the Working Group 2.1 ?Piles? of the German Geotechnical Society (EA-Pfähle) require the consideration of cyclic loading for the assessment of both the displacements and the capacity. Up to now no broadly accepted design method exists, which enables the engineer to give a reliable judgement on the pile capacity under axial cyclic loading and the displacements respectively. Instead numerous design charts make it possible to distinguish between stable and instable loading levels in order to ensure a design on the safe side. A newly developed design approach based on engineering models is presented which delivers a calculation algorithm for the remaining axial pile capacity after a defined number of load cycles to allow for the analysis of stability of the foundation. Furthermore the computation of accumulating displacements is made possible. The results are verified with pile load tests undertaken at Dunkirk, France and showed that the axial capacity after cyclic loading calculated with the newly developed design approach predicts actual capacity with an accuracy of ±20%.

In this study, hydrometallurgical processing of waste ZnO flue dust arising during zinc removal from galvanized low-alloy steel sheets was investigated on a laboratory-scale to obtain electrolytic zinc. The flue dust was separated from flue gases, generated during heating waste galvanized steel sheets in an electric furnace under air atmosphere at temperatures of about 1000oC. The dust, comprising tetragonal ZnO and insignificant amounts of SiO2, was contaminated by Fe, Mn, Pb, Al, Mg, Pb, Cu and Ca. The dust was leached in 0.5 and 1.0M H2SO4 and/or in 20 and 30% NaOH at different temperatures and different liquid-to-solid ratios to determine the optimum conditions leading to the highest possible selectivity of leaching and efficiency of Zn extraction in minimum time. The subsequent electrowinning process was performed with refined zinc sulphate leach liquors and/or with untreated zinc caustic solutions. Zinc sulphate leach liquors were purified using a combination of a hydrolytic pH-controlled precipitation, cementation and carbon refining. Effects of operational variables on Zn electrowinning have been studied for both sulphate and caustic electrolytes. The conventional plate-plate electrowinning cell has been explored in this study. Comparison of results obtained for both zinc electrowinning from acid sulphate and alkaline solutions is presented contribution.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

A strain anneal process has been developed for the production of iron tensile test specimens, the gauge length consisting substantially of a single crystal. Since the method has been quite successful and the results of general interest, the process will be described in detail. The essential feature of the method is the continuous, slow increase of furnace temperature during the grain growth annealing treatment. Briefly, the procedure is as follows: I. Heat machined bars to 950°C in vacuum, hold I hr, furnace cool. 2. Strain to 3.5-3.8 pct elongation (axial loading). 3. Anneal, continuously raising furnace temperature from 450 to goo°C at a rate of so0 per day. 4. Hold at 900°C for 100 hr, furnace cool. Tensile test bars with a 1/4- X I-in. gauge section have been machined from 35 in. Armco iron plate and from 3/8 in. rounds of Puron, a high purity laboratory iron. The axes of the test bars were parallel to the rolling direction. During the machining operation the bars were polished in the lathe with No. 600 emery paper, and this polished surface proved satisfactory for subsequent macrographic examination. A micrographic examination of the materials showed that both were high in FeO inclusions, those of the Puron being smaller but much more numerous. An initial vacuum anneal of I hr at 950°C followed by furnace cooling resulted in a ferritic grain size of ASTM No. 3 for Armco and No. I for Puron. Special heat treatments which reversed these initial grain sizes produced no marked improvement in single crystal production after subsequent treatments. The strain for subsequent grain growth was determined by measuring the decrease in diameter of the tensile bar during elongation. The change in diameter could be measured with a micrometer to +0.0001 in., corresponding to an accuracy of 0.08 pct for the elongation. The accuracy of the diameter measurement is also dependent on grain size because of surface roughening during elongation, and for this reason, a No. 3 grain size is preferable. Optimum grain growth was obtained for strains between 3.5 and 3.8 pct elongation. Once this critical range had been cstablished, all tests were held within it, and thus only meager data were obtained on grain growth following strains outside this range. In general, grain size decreased with increasing strain to about 5.5 pct elongation. Grain growth was occasionally ohserved with less than 3.5 pct elongation although this may have been the result of error in measurement. The program control device for the grain growth anneal consisted of a I rpm motor and worm gear drive, operating the dial shaft of a pyrometer controller through a pulley. Dial speeds of 33 and 50°C per day were tried, but the results at the slower speed were not sufficiently better to warrant the increased furnace time. The furnace tube was evacuated at intervals during the run and kept sealed the remainder of the time. When the controller reached 900°C, it was stopped and the temperature held for 100 hr. This eliminated most of the numerous minute crystallites of about 0.5 mm dimension usually visible on the etched surface of the single crystal. The Nutley Quarry Trunk Sewer Project is a good example of a tunnel that went through difficult and complex ground. The 2 m (7ft.) diameter and 840 m (2,750 ft.)long tunnel passed through soft ground, mixed face, and hard sandstone. The soft ground and mixed face tunneling provided several challenges. During excavation of the tunnel, the Contractor encountered a number of unanticipated large boulders. In addition, the length of the mixed face portion of the tunnel increased by 100%. The Contractor tried various construction techniques to overcome the difficult ground conditions and complete the project. The tunneling progress was slower than expected. The Contractor claimed extra costs for differing site conditions. Through discussions and negotiations between the Contractor, Engineer, and Owner, all of the changed condition claims were settled before the construction of the project was completed. This paper addresses the difficult ground conditions, claims evaluation, and how they were resolved by cooperative efforts between the Contractor and the Owner/Engineer.

The Bureau of Mines developed, by core drilling, the property of Nevada Scheelite, Inc., from October 5, 1943, to February 24, 1944. Claims of the corporation are near Rawhide in the northern portion of Mineral County, Nev. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves in the lateral and vertical extensions of a tactite zone which was being mined for scheelite. Production from this zone to January 1, 1944, was said to be 64,500 tons, with a recovery of 50,618 units of tungsten trioxide. The development work was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, mapping the areas, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling, trenching and sampling. Eleven holes were drilled for a total footage of 2,365 feet of holes.

A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. Roy Hill is a large iron ore mining, processing, railing and port operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Since delivering its first shipments to customers in December 2015, Roy Hill has quickly achieved a 60 Mtpa production rate of lump and fines products. The process plant, principally consisting of wet scrubbing, screening and de-sanding unit processes, was expanded from early 2020 to include operation of a Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) Plant. The WHIMS Plant treats tailings to recover approximately 4 Mtpa of ultra-fine (nominally -150 μm) high-grade hematitic concentrate which, after dewatering, is blended into the fines product. Unlike typical hematite concentrates, which consist largely of dense particles with smooth surfaces, the WHIMS concentrate is characterised by very finely microporous hematitic/goethitic particles, reflecting the overall characteristics of the Roy Hill deposit. Detailed test work has been conducted in collaboration with CSIRO to characterise the WHIMS concentrate in terms of its physical and mineralogical properties, and to determine its influence on the granulation and sintering performance of Roy Hill fines – from fundamental/lab-scale and sinterpot perspectives. The results demonstrate that blending of the high-grade hematitic Roy Hill WHIMS concentrate into the fines product can maintain overall sinter quality and positively influence granulation and sinter melt formation, as well as Fe grade.

"Two in vitro systems are being developed to model initial stages in the interaction of respired dusts with the acinar region of the lung. Incubation of quartz and kaolin with dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, suppresses the prompt C)1otoxicity of both dusts as measured by in vitro enzyme release from pulmonary macrophages or assay by erythrocyte hemolysis. Additional data is presented to quantitate the detoxification of quartz and kaolin by dipalmitoyl lecithin. Subsequent incubation of lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase enzymes results in partial to complete restoration of the assayed cytotoxic potentials, dependent on the lipase activity applied, the incubation time, and the mineral. Restored cytotoxic potential is due to removal of the prophylactic lecithin surface coating and/or due to residual lysolecithin which is produced by the partial enzymatic digestion of lecithin. Data is presented on the contribution of each mechanism to the restored toxicity. Again, this is dependent on the mineral used, the lipase activity applied, and digestion time. Additionally, a system is under development to challenge pulmonary macrophages in culture with native and surfactant treated dusts.
